TEe method of R. W. Moore' for determining subsurface interfacial depths by means of integrated curves of apparent resistivity has been analyzed theoretically. It is found that the only unique tangents that can be drawn to such curves are the asymptotes at infinite electrode spacing and the tangents through the origin at vanishing electrode spacing. Explicit expressions have been derived for the relationship between the electrode spacing at the points of intersection of these tangents and the thickness of the surface strata as a function of the conductivity parameters for the two-layer and three-layer earths. It is found that in all cases the electrode spacing at the points of intersection will exceed % of the thickness of the surface layer, and may even become indefinitely large as the resistivity of the deepest layers increases as compared with that of the surface layer. These results do not agree with the empirical findings of Moore that the intersection of the tangent lines fall at an electrode spacing very approxirnately equal to the thickness of the surface layer. Introduction In a recent paper, R. W. Moore1 proposed a new method for the analysis and interpretation of earth-resistivity measurements. This consists essentially in plotting against the electrode separation of a Gish-Rooney system the integral of the apparent resistivity with respect to the electrode spacing, and observing the breaks in the integral curves. Specifically, tangents are drawn to the various segments of the integral curves, which show appreciably different slopes, and the intersections of these tangents are used as indications of the depths of the various underlying strata. By numerous examples Moore has shown that the electrode separation at the first intersection so found agrees very closely with the depth of the bottom of the surface layer. Moreover, in a number of instances the intersections for greater electrode spacings seemed to correspond to the depths of deeper beds. From a strictly empirical point of view, the procedure proposed and demonstrated by Moore appears to be particularly interesting because of its simplicity as well as its apparent accuracy, Moreover, such a simple method would be especially valuable in view of the well-known difliculties heretofore encountered in the quantitative interpretation of resistivity data. It therefore seems appropriate to attempt a mathematical analysis of the problem to see whether the integral method of Moore has a sound basis. Such an analysis is presented here. Even on cursory consideration, it is clear that the remarkable successes observed by Moore in the application of his method are indeed surprising. For it depends upon the determination and choice of the slopes of smooth and continuous curves, which by their nature must show even more gradual- variations than the original apparent-resistivity plots that are already so difficult to interpret quantitatively. The present state of knowledge of three-dimensional rock properties does not provide an adequate basis for evaluating the safety of under- ground structures in situ. Most of the triaxial studies reported in the past have dealt with crushing strength, but have failed to consider the intergranular behavior and triaxial strain state of rocks. Without this information, the structural competence of rocks cannot be accurately assessed. The absolute three-dimensional testing method (ATT) was conceived for the purpose of analyzing the three-dimensional states of stresses and strains in aggregate rocks under conditions commonly encountered in underground structures. In-situ stress-strain states are not simple, even in the simplest possible form of opening, excavated in a homogeneous and isotropic rock medium. In general, there are four basic stress-strain states which are present in underground openings, regardless of the complexity of their geological conditions. They are the yielded, brittle-fractured, stress-relieved, stress-concentrated states, as illustrated in the schematic diagram, Fig. 1. The ATT machine was designed to create and study all these states in the laboratory. A theory describing the aggregate behavior of rocks under these diversified states is essential to evaluate the safety of underground structures. The Griffith theory is limited to tensile failure of ductile materials and therefore does not apply to behavior of aggregate rocks under compression. The Griffith theory also fails to consider the grain boundary characteristics of aggregates, which is the determining factor of rock behavior. TWINNED metal crystals are usually designated as either deformation twins or annealing twins. If twins are to be classified according to the treatment the metal has undergone just prior to the obser vation of the twins, there are two other possible groups: (1) solidification twins,? when observed in the as-solidified or as-cast condition, and (2) transformation twins, ? when observed in a metal which has been cooled from above an allotropic transformation temperature. McKeehan has demonstrated that ferrite does, occasionally at least, contain twinned structures2. The twins, which he studied by optical methods, were obtained during the preparation of iron single crystals by very slow cooling through A3. He proved that the twin relation was actually that which previous investigators had predicted; namely, twinning along three planes of the form {112}. Since McKeehan's discovery, little or no attention has-been given to this transformation twinning of alpha iron, or to the possibility that it might occur at all speeds of cooling from above A3 instead of merely during the prepara-tion of single crystals. McKeehan's twins were evidently regarded as interesting only in proving that a body-centered cubic metal could form twinned structures-at least under certain conditions. It is generally believed that iron seldom if ever forms annealing twins. Certainly the straight-line banding which is so abundant in annealed face-centered cubic metals is characteristically absent in iron annealed below A3. This paper gives a preliminary summary of results of tests on the resistance to fatigue under reversed stresses of steel subjected to cold-working and of tests to determine the effect of rest on the endurance of steel under reversed stresses. The tests of cold-worked steel were undertaken as part of an investigation by the National Research Council Committee on Fatigue Phenomena of Metals and were made by Mr. Moore; the tests to determine the effect of rest are part of an investigation now being made by Mr. Putnam. Both series of tests were made in the Materials Testing Laboratory of the University of Illinois. The preliminary results of these tests are reported now. because it is believed that test data on fatigue strength should be available at the earliest possible moment; however, it should be clearly kept in mind that this paper gives preliminary results and is intended to encourage discussion rather than to give final conclusions. Before giving the data of the tests, the writers will explain the term "fatigue strength" as used in this paper and will discuss briefly the method used in interpreting the test data of repeated-stress tests. The term fatigue strength, as applied to a material, may be defined as that maximum fiber stress that will cause fracture of the material after the repetition of any given number of cycles of stress, each cycle involving the variation of stress from a minimum to the above maximum. The fatigue strength, then, varies with the number of repetitions occurring in the lifetime of a structural or machine member and with the range of stress for each cycle of stress. The fatigue strength will be lower for a member in which the stress is completely reversed than for one in which the stress varies from zero to a maximum. In interpreting test data from fatigue tests under reversed stress, the stresses and corresponding numbers of repetitions required for failure are plotted on logarithmic cross-section paper. IT is a well-known fact that the solubility of zinc compounds decreases when these compounds are roasted in contact with iron compounds, but descriptions of tests to quantitatively express the fact have not appeared in the literature. Possibly such an expression cannot be uniformly and exactly duplicated by different operators because of the variation in the personal equation. In a general way, however, the reactions between zinc compounds and iron compounds under roasting conditions will show a certain trend with changing conditions and the approximate quantitative expression of this trend appears reasonably well established by experimental work conducted for this purpose. Ferrites and Marmatites The name "ferrite" has been given to the compound of zinc and iron which has the formula Zn0.Fe203. Among the questions pertinent to this subject are those involving inherent or natural ferrite, and also the synthetic or artificial variety. The inherent or natural product is formed when the mineral containing iron and zinc sulfides isomorphously crystallized is subjected to oxidation at roasting temperature. These isomorphously crystallized minerals are known, mineralogically, as marmatites, and contain ZnS and FeS in ratios of 2 to 1 up to 5 to 1 respectively. The zinc and iron sulfides form a definite mineral. They are firmly attached to each other and form common contact planes through which diffusion of the entities occurs during the roasting process. This diffusion of the molecularly intimate entities produces, during roasting, the compound referred to as ferrite, in proportion to the amount of iron originally present in the marmatite. For example, a marmatite from British Columbia containing 9.739 per cent. Fe and 56.87 per cent. Zn corresponds with the mineral having the formula 5ZnS.FeS. The ferrite produced in roasting, which has the formula ZnO.Fe203, contains 27.07 per cent. Zn and 46.40

CORROSION tests should be designed so as to facilitate as far as possible the interpretation of results, consequently factors which may affect the rate of corrosion should be controlled as far as practicable, and very full data should be given regarding the conditions of the test. Among the most important factors affecting the rate of corrosion is often the rate of supply f oxygen to the metal surface. It is essential therefore to understand the mechanism by which oxygen is transferred from the liquid surface to the surface of the metal. The work of Adeney and his coworkers has thrown much light on this mechanism. They have shown1 that the aeration of deaerated water and salt solutions proceeds much more rapidly than can be accounted for by mere diffusion, and have suggested that downward "streaming" takes place from the surface of the water, due mainly to an increase of density brought about by evaporation. The evaporation reduces the temperature of the surface layer, and also increases the concentration in the case f salt solutions. The effect of evaporation in facilitating the transfer of oxygen to a metal and increasing the corrosion f the metal was shown in some experiments due to Friend .2 He tested the corrosion f mild steel plates immersed in water in glass jars, a steady stream f air being drawn over the surface of the water in the jars. The air passing through half the number f jars was saturated with moisture, that passing through the others was dried with calcium chloride. He found that "in every case the water exposed to dry air was approximately twice as corrosive as that exposed to air saturated with water vapor."

The formation of annealing textures during the course of recrystallization in 2 pct Al-Fe crystals rolled in the (111) [112], (112) [111], and (112) [Till orientations has hem studied in detail. When the rolling texture is composed of both (111) [121] and (001)[110] components, the annealing texture consists of mainly (110) [001] and (113) [332] components. As the (001) [110] component diminishes from the surface to the interior of the rolled crystal, the relative concentration of the (113) [332] component in the annealing texture decreases accordingly, whereas that of the (110)[001] component increases with the (111)[112] component in the rolling texture. Such dependence of the annealing texture on the composition of the rolling texture is in accmdance with the oriented growth mechanism. Grain-growth characteristics during recrystallization, hence the annealing texture, can he considerablv different in (112) [111]-type crystals depending sensitively on the initial orientation of the crystal. In a previous publication,' the formation of rolling textures in 2 pct A1-Fe single crystals with initial orientations of approximately (1ll)[112], (112)[111], and (112)[111] was studied in detail. The deformation texture of these crystals consisted of either a single (111)[112] or a combination of (111)[112] and (001)[110] components in various concentrations. For the (lll)[112] crystal, the deformation texture was a single (lll)[112] up to 70 pct rolling reduction, but it became (lll)[112] plus (001)[110] after -90 pct reduction. For the (112)[113.]-type crystals, the relative concentration of the (111)[ 112] and (001)[110] components varied with the depth below the surface of the crystal, as well as with the amount of deformation. These series of specimens, having deformation textures with a range of concentration of the (111)[112] and (001)[110] components, could therefore be used for a thorough investigation of the effect of deformation-texture components on the formation of annealing textures. In a study of rolling and annealing textures in Si-Fe crystals, Dunn and Koh3 noted that the addition of a (001)[110] component to the (111)[112]-type deformation texture had practically no effect on the recrystallization texture.* According to the ori- ented growth mechanism for the formation of annealing textures, nuclei related to the deformation texture by approximately 30-deg rotation around a common [110] axis have the highest rate of growth and the resulting annealing textures generally have such an orientation relationship with respect to the deformation textures.314 It was reasoned by Dunn and Koh3 that if the oriented growth mechanism operated the recrystallization texture developed from a deformation texture containing both (111)[112] and (001)[110] components should be strongly centered around (113)[332], because (113)[332] is approximately midway between the (111)[112] and (001)[110], and is related to both of these two orientations by [110] rotations of 25 to 30 deg. Hence, nuclei of (113)[332] orientation should have a high rate of growth in the deformed matrix. However, their results were not in accord with this prediction. It was felt by the writers that a detailed study was needed to clarify the effect of deformation-texture components on annealing-texture formation. For this reason, the present investigation was conducted. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimens used for the present investigation were taken from the crystals rolled previously for deformation-texture studies.' In order to follow the progress of annealing-texture formation during the course of recrystallization, a single specimen was taken from each rolled crystal and its textural changes examined after successive anneals until recrystallization was complete. The specimen was carefully cut from the rolled strip with a jeweler's saw. Prior to annealing, the sawed edges were etched to remove distorted metal, while both faces of the specimen were protected from the etching solution by acid-proof plastic tape. After annealing, the specimen was etched from the "bottom" face only (the reference or "top" face of the specimen was protected by plastic tape) to one half of its original thickness, so that the texture at the surface and at the central section of the strip could be determined by the reflection technique. This is an attempt to bring together some of the knowledge of the coal-forming conditions obtaining during the Pennsylvanian period in the Western Interior Coal Province, to sketch briefly the present extent and character of the coals produced, and to show the beginning of correlation of beds over wide areas. Coals of later age than the Pennsylvanian are not included and, for reasons that will appear later, little attempt is made to cover the districts of eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas, and northern Texas is omitted entirely. Geological Conditions The conditions that made possible the formation of large coal beds in the United States were most favorable in the Pennsylvanian period, formerly known as the Upper Carboniferous. The geological conditions can be determined from the records, but not the reasons for them. Preceding the Pennsylvanian was the Mississippian, formerly known as the lower Carboniferous and still later as the sub-Carboniferous. During this time, large bodies of limestone were deposited and at the close of the Mississippian they were warped upward and for a long period were eroded. Then there began a period of subsidence, more or less interrupted at times, during which the Pennsylvanian strata were deposited (see table on next page). These consist of sandstones, limestones and shales, with occasional coal beds. At the beginning of the Pennsylvanian there was subsidence, which allowed the sea to extend over the eroded Mississippian surface to the north and east. It passed over eastern and central Texas, a large part of Oklahoma, with a projection into Arkansas, over Kansas and part of Nebraska, all the northern and western part of Missouri, a large part of Iowa except a strip in the north, most of Illinois, practically all of Kentucky, northern Tennessee, most of Indiana, all of the eastern part of Ohio, practically all of West Virginia, western Maryland, the west end of Virginia, and a large part of Pennsylvania. A PREVIOUS paper1 described experiments on the interaction of dithiophosphate with galena and suggested that the process had characteristics of both chemisorption and surface chemical reaction. In order to add to this knowledge, a study has been made of the competition of a second ion with the dithiophosphate for a galena surface. Use again was made of radiotracer methods. Since radiophosphate was readily available, it was chosen as the competing ion. It is a feature of the tracer method that, in spite of similarity in the chemical behavior of the ions, the measurement of one ion in the presence of another can be made as simply as if only one ion species were present. In order to study the competition effectively, it naturally was necessary to examine the interaction of phosphate with galena alone as well as in the presence of dithiophosphate; consequently, this report consists of two parts. The first is devoted to a study of the rates, the isotherms, the desorption, and the exchange in the phosphate-galena system in the same manner as was done for the dithio-phosphate-galena system. The second portion is concerned with the studies on the competition. Flotation experiments on the three-component sys- tem are also outlined and the relationships involved are discussed briefly. The experimental method was that of the previous paper. The preparation of the galena, the radioactive and the nonradioactive dithiophosphate, and the procedures for radioactive counting, for sorp-tion, and for flotation measurements were identical to those previously employed. The radiophosphate* was used in the form of disodium phosphate solution. In the competition experiments the effect of the phosphate ion in depressing dithiophosphate uptake was followed by holding the initial concentration of nonradioactive phosphate constant while varying the initial concentration of the radioactive dithiophosphate. Counterfashion, the depression of phosphate by dithiophosphate was obtained by keeping the initial nonradioactive dithiophosphate ion concentration constant and altering the initial concentration of the radioactive phosphate ion. All solutions were buffered at a pH of 7.8 a0.1 by 20x10-' mol per cc of sodium carbonate. Measurements with radiocarbonate indicated that little or no carbonate could be sorbed in the presence of

The discovery of eight new oil fields, two of which may be of major importance, was the outstanding record in Michigan this year. These new fields have helped to support the declining production from old areas and place the total of 18,559,000 bbl. in line with the past six or seven years. Thus, it appears that Michigan is doing its part in maintaining the production of the country in the third year of the war. The new fields are in the central basin area where oil was first discovered in Michigan, thus tending to focus attention on the deeper part of the lower peninsula of the state. Through 1944 the state of Michigan has produced a total of 222,-641,580 bbl. of crude oil from 100 pools, many of which arc relatively small. Among the previous1y discovered fields Reed City is still the outstanding producer, with Fork, Headquarters, and Adams following in the order named. The Reed City pool produced a little over 5,000,00 bbl., which was more than one third of the state's total for the year. Almost two thirds of the year's total oil production came from fields discovered in the past five years. Maps A map of the oil and gas fields of Michigan in 1943, published in the A.I.M.E. report for 1944,* shows the main producing areas and should be referred to if information in regard to their location is desired. The producing zones are shown in the columnar section in the same publi- cation." The data in Tables I and 2 have been carefully ' checked and every effort has been made to show as complcte information as possible. New Discoveries and New Developments Eight new producing areas were discovered during 1944 which, in order of importance, are: Deep River Field.—The discovery well in the Deep River field was drilled by Don Rayburn and others, and should be listed as a chance discovery, as, from a geological standpoint, it was not considered favorable until oil was found at a depth of 2838 ft. in a dolomitic layer in the top of the Dundee limestone. The first well was completed in January 1944, with an initial production of 2500 bbl. By the end of the year 15 wells had been completed, proying an area 2 1/2 miles long and 1/2 mile wide. Coldttater Field.-The Coldwater field was discovered in August 1944, by the Sohio Oil Co. Production is from secondary dolomite at the top of the Dundee at a depth of 3703 ft. To the end of 1944 nine wells had been drilled on 40-acre spacing. Essexville Field.—Essexville field was discovered by United Drillers and Producers, Inc. Eight wells had been completed to the Dundee lime by the end of 1944, and prospects were good for further development during 1945. Hilliards Field.—Hilliards field was discovered by Cook and Fortney. Production is from the Traverse lime at an average depth of 1588 feet,

A study of the Chapman zone in the Richfield field, Orange County, California, indicates that the quantity of oil recovered by present methods will be only a small portion of the oil originally in place. Since the volume of residual oil is believed to be of large magnitude, an experimental water-flooding operation has been initiated in order to determine whether water-flooding offers promise as an economical method of recovering some of this residual oil. A single injection well was drilled between old producing wells, and a water-treating plant using alum flocculation and chlorination was designed and built. Water has been injected into the input well for six months at rates in excess of 100 bbl. per day. Production from one of the neighboring wells has increased materially, the oil production having risen from 7 to 30 bbl. and the water From I to 40 bbl. per day. While definite conclusions regarding the economic success of water-flooding in the Chapman zone are not justified at this time, it has been demonstrated that water can be injected into the zone on a sustained basis and that this water will displace appreciable quantities of oil from the sand. Introduction As a result of an investigation of subsurface conditions in the Chapman zone of the Richfield field, it was concluded that ultimate oil recovery from this zone would probably be low and that natural water encroachment was so localized as to be of little importance from a recovery stand- point. Furthermore, it was found that in many portions of the zone the wells were approaching an unprofitable level of production. When these data were presented to the management of the Union Oil Co.; their reaction was that an attempt should be made to develop methods of recovering at least a portion of the large quantity of oil remaining in this zone. After some investigation, it was decided that wafer-flooding offered the most likely means of accomplishing this end, but reservoir conditions in the Chapman zone differ so widely from those encountered in any of the flooding projects described in the literature that it was difficult to evaluate the probability of success. Despite encouraging results from laboratory tests, it was not even certain that water would displace an appreciable volume of oil from the Chapman sand under reservoir conditions. Therefore, it was decided to initiate a small-scale project, for two purposes: first, to determine whether water would displace oil from the Chapmall sand and, second, to obtain information and experience for future operations if water-flooding appeared to be a promising method of secondary recovery. Reservoir Data The Chapman zone is the upper of the two producing zones in the Richfield field, being found at depths from 3000 to 3700 fi.. The productive portion of the zolle consists of a large irregularly shaped sand body, which is more than 400 ft. thick at the top of the structure. Potential differences between strata of shale and sandstone have been recognized for about 15 years, and they form the basis of the electrical logging of oil wells. Hitherto these potentials have been ascribed solely to electro-¦ chemical reactions caused by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole through which they are generally measured. Observations by the author in wells empty of water and in a mine shaft suggest that potential differences between sandstones and shales are natural and specific properties of the rocks, although they are moditied in measurement by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole. The cause of these potentials probably is to be sought in the relative polar adsorptive capacities of quartz and clay particles. Introduction The existence of potential differences in the surface of the earth has been known for some time, and their measurement has facilitated the discovery of geological discontinuities such as ore bodies. The technique of measurement has been well established.1-3 In measurements in oil wells, it has been found that the potential of shales with respect to some arbitrary reference is very nearly constant in any one well, at least below the zone to which meteoric water has gained access. Sandstones and some other types of sedimentary rocks have a difference of potential with respect to shale that is negative arid may attain a value of 200 millivolts or more. The difference of potential, as usually measured commercially with water in the hole, is distributed over about one foot vertically at the top and bottom contacts of the sandstones. The sharpness of the curve at the formation contacts can be improved by using a short electrode that is close to the wall of the hole' These potentials generally have been ascribed to the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole. Potentials have been found, however, in wells in which no water was present. In the course of experiments in electrical logging in pennsylvania, carried out by the pennsylvania Geological Survey, observations were made of several phenomena that hitherto have not been described, to the author's knowledge, ill the published literature. The potential differences across the contacts of sandstone and shale are called ill this paper "natural potentials," as distinguished from the potentials caused by electroendosmosis (electrofiltration) and concentration differences, which will be discussed subsequently. Potentials in Cored WeLl In the spring of 1942, the author measured the potentials in an exploratory well (Day 13, near Grand Valley, Pa.) which had been cored With diamond tools. An investigation of the Cr-Mo-Ni ternary system and attendant binaries has been completed. Some changes in the binary diagrams are shown to be necessary. The 1250°C section of the ternary and the liquidus surface have been delineated. A system of invariant reactions existing above 1250°C has been suggested. BECAUSE chromium, molybdenum, and nickel are important not only as bases for alloying systems but also as major alloying additions for other refractory metals, a study of the phase diagrams is of great interest and importance. In addition there are interesting features of theoretical value, a number of which are of prime consideration in this work. The major aim was to determine the ternary phase diagram of these metals at and above 1250°C, with sufficient attention given to lower temperatures to permit an understanding of the conditions existing at 1250°C and above. To understand ternary systems it is essential that accurate information concerning the binary systems be available, which in turn presupposes thorough knowledge of the constituent elements. On the basis of this investigation not only were significant inaccuracies indicated in the binary systems but much consideration had to be given to one of the elements, that is, chromium. The observation has been made that chromium undergoes a crystal transformation at a temperature near its melting point. Much of the experimental data leading to the detection of this transformation and the effects of this hypothesis on the form of the Cr-Ni phase diagram have already been reported' . and will not be repeated here. The experimental methods employed in the investigation have also been covered.'-" he purity of the molybdenum utilized in this work showed by qualitative spectrographic analysis that chromium, copper, iron, silicon, and tungsten were present in quantities of 0.1 to 0.001 wt pct. During the course of the investigation more than 100 melts were made, weighing from 150 to 200 grams each. Each of these melts was sectioned for chemical analysis and for specimens for examination in the as-cast and various heat-treated conditions by X-ray and metallographic means. All X-ray diffraction patterns reproduced here were made using chromium Ka radiation although iron and copper targets were used on occasions during the investigation. Experimental Results Mo-Ni-System: The most recent comprehensive investigation of the Mo-Ni system was made by Ellinger' in 1942; the diagram as shown in the American Society for Metals Handbook is based on his work. The work done on the system in this investigation substantiated the general form of the diagram although some differences were observed. These are indicated by a comparison of Ellinger's diagram and Fig. 1, the latter showing the results of pertinent thermal analyses made in this research. Potential differences between strata of shale and sandstone have been recognized for about 15 years, and they form the basis of the electrical logging of oil wells. Hitherto these potentials have been ascribed solely to electro-¦ chemical reactions caused by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole through which they are generally measured. Observations by the author in wells empty of water and in a mine shaft suggest that potential differences between sandstones and shales are natural and specific properties of the rocks, although they are moditied in measurement by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole. The cause of these potentials probably is to be sought in the relative polar adsorptive capacities of quartz and clay particles. Introduction The existence of potential differences in the surface of the earth has been known for some time, and their measurement has facilitated the discovery of geological discontinuities such as ore bodies. The technique of measurement has been well established.1-3 In measurements in oil wells, it has been found that the potential of shales with respect to some arbitrary reference is very nearly constant in any one well, at least below the zone to which meteoric water has gained access. Sandstones and some other types of sedimentary rocks have a difference of potential with respect to shale that is negative arid may attain a value of 200 millivolts or more. The difference of potential, as usually measured commercially with water in the hole, is distributed over about one foot vertically at the top and bottom contacts of the sandstones. The sharpness of the curve at the formation contacts can be improved by using a short electrode that is close to the wall of the hole' These potentials generally have been ascribed to the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole. Potentials have been found, however, in wells in which no water was present. In the course of experiments in electrical logging in pennsylvania, carried out by the pennsylvania Geological Survey, observations were made of several phenomena that hitherto have not been described, to the author's knowledge, ill the published literature. The potential differences across the contacts of sandstone and shale are called ill this paper "natural potentials," as distinguished from the potentials caused by electroendosmosis (electrofiltration) and concentration differences, which will be discussed subsequently. THE Smackover oil and gas field lies in Ouachita and Union Counties, Ark., in the south-central part of the state, in T.15 and 16S., R.15, 16, and 17W. It is 10 miles north of El Dorado, the principal business and railroad center in the south-central part of the state, and extends from the town of Smackover in all directions. Productive territory having an aggregate area of nearly 55 sq. mi. has been developed. It extends 6 miles from north to south and 12 miles from east to west. The field may be divided into two parts: the east district, which includes the area east of the town of Smackover, and the west district, which includes the area west of the town of Smackover. In relation to the neighboring productive fields of Arkansas, the Smackover field is 9 miles north of .the El Dorado oil and gas field, 8 miles slightly west of north of the East El Dorado oil and gas field, and 16 miles east of the Stephens oil field. Smackover was discovered in May, 1922, when the Oil Operators Trust drilled well No. 1 on the J. T. Murphy farm, in the southeast quarter of sec. 8, T. 16S., R.15W. This well is located almost, on the top of the Norphlet dome and was drilled to the Nacatoch sand. It had an initial open flow volume of 30,000,000 cu. ft. of dry gas per day, and a rock pressure of 950 lb. per sq. in. In July, 1922, the V. K. F. Co. completed the first oil well in sec. 29, T.15S., R.15W., on the north side of the Norphlet dome, and 3 miles north of the first gas well. This well started the active development of the north and northwest sides of the dome.1

Extensive progress has been made in the metallurgy of alloys for die castings. Enthusiastic proponents of some alloys are inclined to make extravagant claims for their materials, which may be justified by physical tests on test bars made from the respective alloys but are seldom justified by the results obtained with commercial die castings made from those alloys. Chemical analysis of the test bars and castings fails to determine the cause of these variations, since they are due to other physical factors entering into the commercial production of die castings. In this paper, an attempt will be made to outline some of the factors in commercial die-casting practice to which these variable results may be attributed, in the hope that the manufacturer of die castings, recognizing the importance of these factors, will devote more attention to them in the design and construction of dies and equipment. In 1914,l the author defined die castings as "metal castings made by forcing molten metal, under pressure, into metallic molds or dies." This definition was given in order to differentiate die castings from other molded metal products such as "permanent-mold" castings, L'slush" castings and similar products that are sometimes erroneously termed die castings. The term "die casting" could be interpreted to include all castings made in metal molds or dies; but since this term, like most of our technical nomenclature, has been developed by commercial practice we must look to this practice for its proper definition. The Germans, with their usual devotion to desecriptive names, have adopted the name of sprilzguss (squirt cast) for die castings. Undoubtedly this name is more descriptive of the die-casting process, where the metal is literally squirted into the die and serves to differentiate this process from other metal mold processes, where the metal is poured into the die. In the earlier paper mentioned, the author also emphasized the fact that the definition given for die castings indicated clearly that the satisfactory operation of the process must comprise three factors, all of which must be considered of vital importance to the successful operation of the die-casting process:

For perhaps one hundred years scientists have been engaged in attempts at devising a satisfactory method of classification of coal. During this time many charts, tables and graphs have been proposed, some of which have had considerable merit, but no one system has been found to be applicable to all ranks of coal, nor has any one system received general acceptance. In many of the proposals, water eliminated between room temperature and 105" C. has been regarded as extraneous matter and calculations have been made to the air-dry or water-free basis. Such methods of calculation do not lend themselves to satisfactory grouping of the high-moisture coals.1, 2 A consideration not only of the properties of the high-moisture coals and their behavior on drying but of the generally accepted ideas of the coalification process and the role of water in this process indicates that water is an essential constituent of all coals and therefore should not be neglected. For example, in such low-rank coals as the lignites of the Northern Great Plains' deposits the inherent moisture of the lignite as mined plays a very important part in the physical properties thereof. Freshly mined lignite contains upwards of 30 per cent water and is extremely tough and resistant to shock. Upon exposure to the atmosphere, the lump loses part of its moisture and checks and splits, leaving a friable and broken up residue. So far as we have been able to determine, water is the only thing lost in this process and we are forced to the conclusion that moisture plays an extremely important part in the structural properties of the original lignite. With reference to the coalification process, Mack and Hulett3 pointed out in 1917 the important part that water played therein. They observed that water cannot be removed from peat or coal by pressure alone, but only as the result of chemical reaction, and suggested that peat in its early stages may be largely a hydrosol. Slow chemical changes occur over a long period of time until finally the mass becomes more largely a hydrogel. These views are substantiated to some extent by the experi-

ONLY the acute phase of the smelter fume problem is new. The problem itself is older than the Christian era. While both lead and copper were mined and crudely smelted ; on: 3,000 years ago, it was not until the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula and the British Isles, which occurred but shortly before the beginning of the Christian era, that there was any evidence of smelting operations on a scale sufficiently large to permit a fume problem. Around Huelva, Spain, are found more than 30 million tons of slag from lead smelting conducted there by the Romans. Pliny tells us that more than 20,000 slaves were employed in the Iberian mines. Extensive mining and smelting by the Romans in England and Wales were coincident with the Iberian proceedings. These metallurgical operations were upon a sufficiently large scale to produce marked results both upon the surrounding country and the smelter workers, but, as they were those of a conqueror upon conquered soil, conducted by slaves, imperial Rome failed to recognize that such a thing as a smoke problem did or could arise, and whatever fume question there may have been at that .time remained a question only to those who had no chance to answer any phase of it. The smelting operations of the Romans extended over about 400 years, and little is "recorded of lead and copper smelting from that time until the 16th century. From the revival beginning at this period up to the present century, the growth of smelting has been comparatively gradual. In Great Britain, smelting was conducted almost wholly in localities where metallurgical operations were of paramount importance, and the communities that grew up in smelter localities were due to and dependent upon the mines and smelters. This fact had much to do with the comparative freedom of British smelting from burdensome fume litigation and legislation. To a lesser degree these conditions applied to the German operations which, when coupled with the further fact that most of the early German operations were to a greater or less degree fiscal workings of Prussia, Saxony and Brunswick-Hanover; accounts for

' I HE fabrication of many materials from powders involves a sintering process. A mass of powder will sinter because of the excess free energy over the same mass in the densified state caused by the higher total surface area of the powder. An understanding of the kinetics and mechanism of sintering should assist in improving the properties of such materials. The present investigation conducted at the NACA Lewis laboratory deals with the sintering of chromium carbide. Dry sintering (sintering at a temperature below the melting point) was divided into two stages by Shaler:' the first stage, during which the particles preserve much of their original shape and the voids are interconnected, and the second stage, during which densification occurs and the pores are isolated. The mechanism of forming interfaces between particles, or welding together of particles, has been investigated by Kuczynski2 and may be described by any one or a combination of the following mechanisms: viscous flow, evaporation and condensation, volume diffusion, or surface diffusion. The mechanism by which pores are closed or eliminated (densification) during sintering, is of interest. Grain growth observed during sintering may be attributed to the variation in the surface energies of individual grains, causing some grains to grow at the expense of others. Grain boundary migration occurs presumably by a diffusion process, therefore the rate of grain growth would be expected to increase exponentially with increasing time and temperature. Thus, for practical sintering times of less than 1 hr, a certain minimum temperature may exist at which major structural and property changes will occur. Densification and kinetics of grain growth during sintering under pressure of chromium carbide were investigated to provide additional information which will aid in describing more accurately the sintering process and the mechanisms involved. This material was selected for this study because of the current interest in high strength, oxidation resistant refractory materials, such as carbides, which are sintered to produce solid, dense materials from powders. Sintering under pressure is a process where the heat and pressure are applied to the compact simultaneously, specimens for this work were prepared by sintering under pressure at different temperatures and for various time periods. Experimental Procedure Preparation of Specimens: Chemical analysis of the commercial chromium carbide used in this investigation was as follows: Cr 86.19 pct, C 12.14 pct, and Fe 0.2 pct. X-ray diffraction powder patterns gave characteristic diffraction lines of Cr3C2 crystal structure. Powder particle size was determined microscopically and the average initial particle size was 6 microns with 85 pct between 2 and 10 microns. Specimens sintered under pressure were formed in graphite dies3 heated by induction. Sintering temperatures were measured with an optical pyrometer by sighting into a 3/8-in. hole drilled 1 in. deep at the midsection of the graphite die. A load of approximately 1 ton per sq in. was applied to the powder. The die assembly was heated in 20 min to the highest temperature (2500°F') at which no increase in grain size could be observed, and less than 2.5 min were required to heat from this temperature to the maximum temperature (3000°F). Sintering temperatures and times for the specimens of this investigation are indicated in Table I. Analysis of Specimens: Specimens polished with diamond abrasives were etched to reveal the grain boundaries with a 1:1 mixture of 20 pct potassium hydroxide and 20 pct potassium ferricyanide heated to 160°F. Representative areas of each sample were photographed at 1000 diameters. The largest diameters of all well-defined grains were measured, but only the measurements of 15 of the largest grains were averaged in order to determine an index of grain size on the assumption that they were among the first to begin growth. Densities were determined from differential weighing of the samples in air and water. The reported density values are considered correct within ±0.01 g per milliliter. Results and Discussion Metal compacts have exhibited grain growth when sintered at temperatures about two-thirds of the absolute temperature of their melting point.' Grain growth also occurs during the sintering of chromium carbide and is illustrated by the micrographs shown in Fig. 1. These micrographs were prepared from specimens sintered for 90 min at temperatures ranging from 1371°C (2500°F) to 1648°C (3000°F).
