In my experience, perhaps the most interesting problems came up during the testing, prospecting, developing and equipping of the Chuquicamata and Braden Copper Mines in Chile, and it is proposed in this article to give as briefly as possible what some of those problems were, their solutions, and the decisions made as to the different methods to be employed. The romance of mining is still a great lure to the young man who is making a choice of a profession to follow. The thought of travel to strange and out-of-the-way places, the glamor of pioneer life, the excitement of discovery, the constructive work of building something, entirely "from the grass roots up," or of reconstructing a played-out property and making a success of it-all of these phases have a strong appeal and often influence the young man in the choice of mining as a profession. Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen: I accepted your Chairman's invitation to speak to a group of experts in this field with the greatest hesitation, because I know little or nothing about it. Certainly I can make no detailed suggestions, or suggest planning along very definite lines. You cannot do that sort of thing in a vacuum, and as I have suggested, my knowledge of the whole oil problem is next to nothing. It is possible that as a student of our public law, constitutional law particularly, for a number of years, I have acquired a perspective that may enable me to offer, for what they are worth, some general thoughts on these problems. I think that nothing in the whole field of law requires more definitely and clearly the functional approach than does the problem of a sound legal solution of the difficulties of the oil and gas industry. The industry is dealing with substances that are peculiar, and one must know how those substances act and what has been the history of the industry, to undertake to make anything like specific suggestions. I certainly am not qualified.

Operators concerned with the destruction of their piping by acid mine waters will be interested in the method by which this problem was solved at the Cardiff mine of the Homer group. Rubber lined, or acid resisting metal pipes were found too expensive. Casting concrete lining in pipe would have required a minimum thickness of one inch, thus excessively reducing the pipe's diameter, as well as taking twenty four hours per length of pipe. The Naylor Pipe Co. of Chicago, having experimented with centrifugal lining of pipe with concrete, provided information which eventually solved the problem. An experimental plant was constructed as shown, and the following procedure developed : (1) Kerosene is used to remove the interior oil coating of new pipe. Closed with blank flanges, the pipe is revolved for eight minutes at varying speeds. Stopping and starting the motor achieves a good washing action. The kerosene is then drained off, and similar washing action with caustic soda removes any excess. Swabbing in done with burlap fastened to a 1/2-in. pipe. The reliability of large diameter, high horsepower ball mills is paramount when large production and minimum downtime is required. The 518 x 1706 mm (17 x 56 ft) double compartment ball mill at St. Lawrence Cement Co. has the fist gearless drive built in North America and has the world's largest hydrodynamic bearings currently built and running. The machine has seen three years operation and has met its specifications. The mill wm designed by Aerofall Mills Ltd. and the gearless drive built and designed by the Canadian General Electric Co. The paper discusses the operation of the machine from the mechanical, electrical and process aspects.

Production control of aluminum content of low carbon aluminum killed open hearth steels is being achieved by using an oxygen probe unit. Based on the free oxygen content of the bath after block, a preliminary chart for aluminum additions has been established. The aluminum aim is .040%. Controlled aluminum contents will result in eliminating coarse grain heats, high aluminum contents, and a reduction in aluminum costs. By reducing the frequency of high aluminum contents both cleaner and better rolling heats will be obtained. The savings in aluminum costs is an added benefit of lesser importance in comparison to the quality improvements gained by controlled aluminum contents. Although the main goal for the oxygen probe at Republic Steel has been to adapt it for production control of aluminum contents, future usage could be extensive. Immediate plans for using the probe are on degassed material, on fully blocked open hearth heats to improve manganese recoveries and ranges, and on machining grades to control oxygen content. Also by controlling the oxygen content of the steel to as close to equilibrium conditions as possible, cleaner steel will result.

Fractions of glass particles in the size range 0.5 to 5.0 were prepared by an elutriator that operates in a centrifugal field. Although mean sizes of commercially graded abrasive powders were ten times greater than those of samples prepared by the elutriator, frequency size plots for elutriator samples compared favorably. Efficiency of separation was low and amounts of material recovered by the elutriator were small, but the method should find use in preparation of small amounts of sized materials for laboratory investigations. THE production of fluorspar is one of the smaller nonmetallic indus-tries in the United States with a capital investment-about $10,000,000. Shipments from United States mines' in 1936 totaled 176,231 short tons valued at $3,111,268, an average price of $17.65 per ton. The United States produces about 40 per cent of the world's fluorspar, of which about 90 per cent comes from the Illinois and Kentucky deposits along the Ohio River.2 Further detailed information on the fluorspar industry in the United States is given by Hatmaker and Davis.28 Fluorspar is marketed according to the following relative quantities and specifications: Consump- Specifications, Per Cent Use Form tion in 1936, Per Cent CaF2 SiO2 Fe2O3 Metallurgical Gravel 79 +85 -5 or lump Ceramic,. The sands of Snake River, Idaho, have long been known to contain gold. They were worked by some of the first prospectors who came to Idaho, and on the banks still stand the ruins of camps abandoned for years. There are almost always prospectors searching for gold during the season of low water, and it is not an infrequent thing to find a miner of the old type actually panning the sand, or the prospect-hole which he has just left. There is more or less mystery about these miners and their methods of finding the spots where they work. They are always subjects of much speculation to the ordinary traveller. The rich discoveries are, for the best of reasons, concealed until the claims can be taken up. It is difficult to find a place where there are no prospects, but the " colors " are so very fine that they do not offer much inducement to enterprise. The California miner usually values a color at from 5 to 10 cents, often the latter; while on Snake River it would take 100 colors, or even more, to make that amount.

The technical and safety press have devoted much space in support of or in opposition to the use of booster and auxiliary fans in coal mines. The Mine Safety Board of the U. S. Bureau of Mines has given the matter consideration, and the Mine Ventilation Committee of the A. I. M. E. is now seeking a discussion of the merits and demerits of such fans to guide it in formulating recommendations. In this paper I will set up some principles on which I believe most engineers will agree and from which we may work toward a decision, though as to what that decision shall be there may be a difference in opinion. THE technique of concentrating valuable minerals from lean ores by flotation depends upon the creation of a finite contact angle at the three-phase contact, mineral-water-air. If the mineral is completely wetted by the water phase, contact angle zero, there is no tendency for air bubbles to attach themselves to the mineral. However, when the contact angle is finite, the surface free energy of the system, water-air bubble-mineral particle, can be diminished by contact between the bubble and the particle, and if not too heavy the mineral will be levitated in the froth. With a few exceptions, all clean minerals are completely wetted by pure water. Thus the art of flotation consists in adding substances to the water to make a finite contact angle with the mineral to be floated, but to leave the other minerals with a zero contact angle. The contact angle concept and experimental measurements of contact angles have played important roles in flotation research for several decades.1-3 Nevertheless, there remain unanswered some basic questions as to the scientific significance of the contact angle and the nature of the processes by which flotation reagents affect contact angles.

IT just so happens that we do our best thinking while painting wood- work and last Saturday while finishing up the screens (the bugs come late where we live) the paint very nearly ran out. By adding turpentine, it just stretched. It was pretty thin for the job though, which made us think that that is just about what the situation is going to be in the mining industry if something isn't done to increase the number of enrollments in engineering curricula. Engineers are going to be spread too thin for the job at hand.

This is the date at which the manuscript must be in the hands of the Secretary, and is not the mailing date upon which it leaves the author's hands. In case manuscripts are sent to members of Technical Committees, they must be in the hands of the Technical Committee a sufficient time in advance of Nov. 23 so that they may be in the hands of the Secretary on the date indicated.

As predicted a year ago, owing to the discovery in 1936 of crude oil on the west flank of the south end of Tuner Valley in the eastern foothills of Alberta, 50 miles southwest of Calgary, and the drilling activity that resulted, the production of crude oil in Canada during 1937 showed a very substantial increase over the previous year. The production from other parts of Canada is relatively small and shows slight variations only from year to year. The production of crude oil in Canada and the production in Alberta, the main producing Province, is shown in Tables 1 and 2.

INTRODUCTION More than five years have elapsed since the first shortwall panel was installed in a US mine in 1972. By the latest count, 11 mines have tried the shortwall method on 34 panels. Potentially, the shortwall method (see Figure 1) offers the combined advantages of longwall and continuous mlning. But just like any other mining method, shortwall is not a panacea. It is only applicable under a set of stringent conditions. Coal operators at eight of the eleven mines are satisfied with shortwall mining, though there are only five mines presently producing coal from shortwall panels.

VRD started producing pellets in 1969 with one 2-million-t straight grate plant. In the beginning of April 1973, the second unit came on stream with an additional capacity of 3 million t/a of pellets. In January 1977, the third unit started, bringing the annual capacity to 8 million t/a. In the coming year (1978-79), three more units, 3 million t each, are expected to begin production. CVRD's experience with different binders and additives is described. Over the years several kinds of pellets have been produced to satisfy market requirements. A procedure whereby the completeness of search is calculated by using the area of influence of exploratory drill holes or samples is extended to allow for errors of recognition. The size, shape, and orientation of potential targets are mapped in a probabilistic sense on the array of drill holes or samples. The method can be used either to determine how well explored are the subregions within a previously drilled or sampled area, or to test proposed alternative search strategies. Examples of the use of the method demonstrate the complexity of sequential search when the areas of influence of drill holes or samples overlap.

The tensile strength of agglomerate models due to capillary forces has been determined by computation of the exact surface profiles. Graphs showing tensile strength as a function of moisture content and contact angle me given for spheres in cubic arrangement. Another model of cones attached to cube faces, in cubic packing, provides a better representation of angular particle agglomerates. An algebraic formula approximating tensile strength as dependent on surface tension, particle size, moisture content, contact and cone angles was developed. The phenomenon of "capillary evaporation" due to high negative capillary pressures is explained and its influence on tensile strength of agglomerates is evaluated.

Filtration and dewatering results of -500 µm (-32 mesh) Pittsburgh seam coal are discussed with reference to the microscopic structure parameters, i.e., particle segregation in the cake and particle and pore size distributions at different layers. At low solid concentration of 0.33 kg coal/kg water, a non-uniform cake structure is observed where particle and pore sizes increase from the top to bottom layers in the filter cake. An increase in the solid concentration in slurry produces more uniform cake structure and higher filtration and dewatering rates. Air bubble entrapment in the coal filter cakes is also discussed.
