CONSTRUCTION of the long projected Moffat tunnel, on the Denver & Salt Lake R. R., between Tolland and Irving, Colorado, is now actually and actively progressing. This 6.1-mile bore through the Rocky Mountains, at an elevation of about 9200 ft., will eliminate 33 1/3 miles of probably the most tortuous standard-gage track in the world, and at the same time will avoid the necessity for crawling over the snow-bound continental divide at an elevation of 11,660 ft Completion of the tunnel within the stipu-lated four years, is expected to nave an immediate effect on the develop-ment of the known coal fields in north-western Colorado, already penetrated at Craig, the present terminus of the road, while it will also enable the railroad to carry out the original designs of its founder, David H. Moffat, for through traffic from farther west. The intention now is to accomplish the latter object by an extension from McCoy following the canon of the Grand River down to a connection with the Denver & Rio Grande at Dotsero. Legal impediments to the financ-ing of the tunnel having been removed by action of the Colorado legislature in April, 1922, the Moffat Tunnel Improvement District issued bonds to the amount of $6,720,000 which have been widely and quickly distrib-uted through a New York banking house. Responsi-bility for the execution of the project has been vested in the Moffat Tunnel Commission, to which a board of consulting engineers has been appointed for carrying out the details of administration. This board includes D. W. Brunton and L. D. Blauvelt, of Colorado, and J. Vipond Davies and J. Waldo Smith, of New York; R. H. Keays, who has managed large tunnel projects in New York, is chief engineer for the Commission.

The brass-rolling industry has not had a great deal of experience with antimony in its product. There have been some recent excursions with antimony as a corrosion inhibitor in tubes, but in sheet brass it has been regarded with apprehension and generally avoided. This is not to say that contaminations have never occurred, and probably a great many brass mill men have had their own ideas on the effect of such contamination. Our own views were based upon certain experiences some years ago with strip castings that split lengthwise in the early stages of rolling. The nature of this splitting is shown in Fig. I, from a photograph taken in 1922 as a record of 20 bars of 65-35 common brass made with an antimonial brand of copper. These bars were cast 6¾ in. wide by I in. thick by 45 in. long. In the first pass through the rolls, 19 of the 20 split lengthwise throughout their length, while each half curved outward in a wide arc as it emerged from the rolls. In those days, if splitting was not a frequent occurrence, it was not unfamiliar. One can recall periods of short duration when large amounts of common brass would behave in this way. There was nothing imaginary about these spells. The affected metal would split lengthwise in the breakdown rolls, and no maneuvering of mill practice made any difference. The condition would descend like a plague, demoralize the mill for several days, and disappear. It is doubtful if anyone knew the cause—however many explanations may have been current. In recent years many new appliances have been introduced into German steel-works and rolling-mills for the purpose of improving working-methods, and of creating and maintaining increased production, and satisfying the ever-growing demand for metal of closely specified hardness, strength and form. One result of the improvements has been to aid very effectively in demonstrating the real superiority of ingot- over wrought-iron for almost every possible purpose, and in dispelling the last vestiges of prejudice unfavorable to the new metal. If, nevertheless, no marked decrease in the number of puddlingfurnaces has yet been noticed, the cause of their survival must be attributed to the greatly increased consumption of all kinds of ironmanufactures. Several large new works for the production of ingotiron are now, however, in course of erection in the Rhenish-Westphalian district, and upon their completion a rapidly diminishing output of wrought-iron may be anticipated. The present aim of all large works manufacturing ingot-iron is to work the molten blast-furnace pig into a finished product without any further fuel-consumption than is required to furnish steam for the rolling-mill. Though practice has established the feasibility of this principle, no works can yet point to its complete adoption, partly because of the limitations imposed by existing conditions and plant, and partly, also, on account of the highly-diversified character of the finished products. The Bessemer-works were the first to feel the influence of the basic process; but of recent years a similar influence has affected the open-hearth, and the owners of works possessing both a converterand an open-hearth plant are now seeking to arrange them for combined working, in charging as well as in casting. THE Tri-State zinc and lead-mining district is in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, the southeast corner of Kansas and the southwest corner of Missouri. The area throughout which active mining has been conducted is about 45 miles long and about 5 miles wide, extending northeasterly from Commerce, Okla., to Alba, Missouri. Although the lead ores were mined on a very small scale in the vicinity of Joplin, Mo., as early as 1848, nothing of any importance was done in the district until 1870, since when both mining and smelting have been prosecuted with considerable vigor. In the beginning the lead ores only were exploited, but within a few years extensive deposits of zinc ores were found and since that time the production of zinc ore has far exceeded that of lead. Both the surface and mineral rights in Missouri and Kansas were under individual ownership by the time ore was discovered. Although some of these rights were purchased by mining companies, most of the mining has been done under leases covering small areas, usually 40 acres, although in the past many leases were given on much smaller tracts. In Oklahoma most of the mineral land had been alloted by the Government to various Indian tribes and although the title to some of these lands had been acquired by various white men before the discovery of the rich Picher field, the title to most of the land has remained with the Indian tribes and the leasing of the mineral rights has been done by the Federal Government for the benefit of the Indians. The Indian allotments were of 200 acres each and some of the mining leases covered entire allotments, although many leases were granted for only 40 acres or even less. Practically all of the leases granted in the past required the erection of a concentrating plant on each lease, a condition that has had a pronounced effect upon the mining and milling methods of the district, since the apparent ore reserves on each tract were too small to justify large

Discussion of the paper of Robert R. Abbott, presented at the New York Meeting, October, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 82, October, 1913, pp. 2389 to 2400. ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass.:-Mr. Abbott has certainly made a strenuous effort to ascertain the influence of the various elements on the absorption of carbon by steel-a subject of great importance to those dealing with the case hardening of that metal. Because of the extensive and careful character of Mr. Abbott's experiments, one is all the more disappointed that his results, as he himself recognizes, are not more satisfactory; for, indeed they leave us just about where we were,-still entertaining uncertain views in regard to the carbon-absorbing power of various alloy steels. It might be asked whether Mr. Abbott's method of estimating the amount of carbon absorbed-namely, by weighing the specimens before and after the carburizing treatment-was the best one to select. Are not serious sources of error. inherent to such procedure because of the difficulty of satisfactorily removing the earburizing material attached to the specimen ? The method of least squares has certainly failed to solve the problem satisfactorily. By manipulating Mr. Abbott's results in a different manner I have obtained the following expression: P = 100 - 50 C - 7 Ni + 20 Cr, in which P represents the carbon-absorbing power; C, the percentage of carbon; Ni, that of nickel; and Cr, that of chromium. It is assumed that the carbon-absorbing power of pure iron, or what might be called its carburizability, is represented by 100. Applying the formula, for instance, to a steel containing 0.15 per cent. C, 3 per cent. nickel, and 0.50 per cent. chromium, its carbon-absorbing power would be 100-50X0.15-7X3+20X0.50=81.50; that is, 81.50 per cent. of the carbon-absorbing power of pure iron.

Cananea is located at an elevation of 5,200 ft in the north-central part of the state of Sonora, Mexico, about 135 miles northeast of Hermosillo, the state capital, and about 30 miles south of the United States border. A graded road runs to Cananea from the border town of Naco, near Bisbee, and a branch road turns east to Cananea at Imuris, a town 36 miles south of the border on the Nogales-Hermosillo highway. Railway service is provided by a spur from the Nogales-Naco branch of the Ferrocarril del Pacífico Railroad. Fuel for the power plant, smelter, and town (population approximately 20,000) is natural gas, supplied through a pipeline from the United States. The Compa[n]ía Minera de Cananea generates electric power for its own installations and also supplies both electricity and water to the town. HISTORY The earliest record of mining in Cananea dates back to 1760, when Jesuit fathers worked the Cobre Grande mine for silver in spite of resistance from hostile Indians. About 1800, several mines were worked on a relatively large scale by the House of Guea of Chihuahua. From then until about 1890 when William C. Greene of Fairbanks, Ariz., acquired control of a large group of properties, mining continued in a rather sporadic manner. The mineralized district is approximately 6 miles wide and 15 miles long, and the orebodies are associated with breccia pipes and granitic intrusive rock. In the early days, many small mines operated within the area on high-grade orebodies. With each year bringing the exploration of deeper and deeper producing horizons in the effort to maintain production, the problem of lifting the oil to the surface is continually becoming more difficult. Flowing and gas-lift wells eventually decline to such a point that pumping is necessary. The increasing loads on sucker rods resulting from deeper pumping operations are approaching the ultimate strength of the rods with consequent reduction in the factor of safety. With this diminishing factor of safety, the vibratory stresses causing fatigue, crystallization, and ultimate fracture become more important. These vibratory stresses are the result of varied pumping conditions which, if properly understood and investigated, may be eliminated to a great extent. To accomplish this purpose, a recording dynameter has been developed which gives an indicator card showing the actual load on the polished rod at each point of the pumping cycle. Recording Dynamometer The instrument consists of a dynamometer head of the piston and cylinder type filled with castor oil, and a recording device, the movable card holder being connected with the dynamometer through a system of levers and the hollow spring gage connected with the fluid chamber of the dynamometer by a high-pressure flexible tube. The dynamometer head is hung from the beam with an ordinary hanger and lugs on the cylinder, while the piston is attached to the polished rod. The movable card holder actuated through levers moves in a vertical direction pro-portionate to the movement of the polished rod. The recording arm of the hollow spring gage inscribes on the card the pressure at all times. Thus by proper scales, the indicator card gives the load on the polished rod at all points in the pumping cycle. Fig. 1 shows the hookup of the recording dynamometer at a pumping well.

One of the most prominent features of our present-day industrial development is the ever-increasing demand put upon materials of construction. Engineering ingenuity, within the past 25 years, has been unusually active, and in some fields at least engineers frankly say that engineering design has progressed as far as the limitations imposed by the properties of the present materials of construction will permit. Consequently, they are today demanding improvement in their working materials and seeking new ones, through the aid of which the present limitations of design may be overcome. The activity of this search is evident in all fields, but it is particularly so in that of structural materials required to be resistant to corrosion. The corrosion resistance of metals and alloys is never absolute and all-inclusive; a particular alloy will withstand some corrosive conditions well and fail utterly under others. Furthermore, other properties, physical and mechanical, required in conjunction with corrosion resistance vary considerably for different commercial applications. One wants a soft, ductile sheet metal resistant to atmospheric corrosion; another, a high-strength alloy resistant to sulfuric acid. The last decade has witnessed active and definite progress in the development of high-strength, corrosion-resisting alloys. In June, 1924, a symposium by the American Society for Testing Materials, on Corrosion-resistant, Heat-resistant and Electrical-resistance Alloys, disclosed no less than 60 commercial alloys the properties of which were described as being suitable for industrial service where corrosion resistance was a feature. Today the number of these alloys has been doubled, at least. In addition, economy in design and construction through decreased weight has given considerable impetus to the improvement of alloys of which the mechanical propprties may be improved by heat-treatment.

IN the pear 1881, I visited San Domingo, in the interest of French capitalists, to examine and report upon certain "concessions" of gold-bearing gravel and quartz veins, on the Isabella and Jaina rivers and their tributaries. This district is periodically reported to he extraordinarily rich, and there is oast around it the glamour of the mysterious shipments of gold, credited, in romance and in more or less romantic history, to Columbus and the Spaniards of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Since considerable sums of money and several valuable lives have been lost in the unsuccessful search for its profitable mines, it seems desirable to place on record Borne of the information collected concerning the value of these famous gold fields, with the hope of facilitating the work of those who may hereafter be called on to investigate these claims, and of preventing the unnecessary waste of capital. It is needless to add that the capitalists for whom my investigations were made abandoned the enterprise they had in view,although no doubt similar schemes will be brought forward many times in the future, as they have been in the past, under the fervent advocacy of too sanguine enthusiasts. Since the time of the Spanish occupation of the Island of San Domingo, in 1497, when Columbus Found the natives wearing ornaments of gold, more or less of the precious metal has been obtained annually by washing the gold-bearing sands of several of its streams. It is said that during the Spanish domination, when the native Indians were held in the most abject servitude, a certain amount of gold was required of each one as the rault of his labor. Uuder this

The actual amount of any metal volatilized from a mixture of metals depends on the magnitude of its partial vapor pressure under the specified conditions of temperature, and on the circumstances attending the heating—in particular, on the duration of heating, the volume of gas coming into actual contact with the surface of the metal, the extent of this surface, and the rate of diffusion of the volatile metal from the body of the melt toward the surface.' If two (or more) metals are volatilizing from the same mixture of metals, the several conditions are identical except for the difference in partial pressure and in rate of diffusion of the volatilizing metals; the second of these two factors is without doubt only of secondary importance as it is probable that the rates of diffusion of the volatilizing metals would be very similar. Hence, in order to gain an estimate of the relative amounts of two metals that may be volatilized from a given mixture, it is necessary to know the vapor pressure, or, more precisely, to ascertain for each metal its partial vapor pressure in equilibrium with the liquid (or solid) alloy under the particular circumstances. The partial pressure of each constituent depends on the effective concentration of that constituent in the alloy2 as well as on the vapor pressure of the constituent when pure, and it can be calculated when both of the above factors are known. The first step, therefore, is to ascertain the vapor pressure of the several pure metals. Vapor Pressure of Pure Metals The experimental data on the vapor pressure of the several pure metals with which we are here concerned are not so accurate as could be wished, nor have the determinations been made in general at temperatures such that the results can be used directly. An elaborate series of experiments has been conducted during the past three years at Irvington, N. J., which has resulted in the perfection of a process for the manufacture of smokeless fuel from high-volatile coals, and for the recovery and refinement of the coal-tar products derived therefrom. These experiments have been financed by Messrs. Blair & Co., of New York, and were conducted under the direction of Charles H. Smith, a member of this Institute, and the inventor of the process. The low-temperature distillation of coal has interested investigators for many years. Sporadic attempts have been made to solve the mechanical problems, but until the Smith process was developed, they were not carried to conclusions of economic value. The present coal shortage and the increasing demand for smokeless fuels make this subject one of timely interest. DescRiption of Plant The following equipment was installed and operated during the experimental period: Four horizontal and two vertical units of commercial size for the low-temperature distillation of the coal; two vertical, two horizontal, and two inclined benches for distillation of the briquets at medium and higher temperatures; presses and auxiliary equipment necessary for making briquets; and a complete byproduct recovery and tar-refining plant. This commercial equipment is provided with gas and electric meters, pyrometers and other apparatus for recording accurately the results of all experiments. There is, in addition to the commercial equipment, a complete chemical laboratory with distillation and recovery apparatus, including facilities far refining and cracking the tar and measuring the yields and calorific value of the gas. This apparatus makes possible a study on a small scale, of the various problems involved in the process. Description of Process Mr. Smith's experiments have resulted in the production on a commercial scale of: 1. A fuel, called Carbocoal, which, for convenience in handling, is prepared in briquet form.

THE State of Nevada, known par excellence as "the Silver State," occupies the major portion of the wide plateau, or so-called Great Basin, lying between the Sierra Nevada range on the west and the Wahsatch range of the Rocky Mountains on the east. It extends from the 114th degree to the 120th degree of longitude, west of Greenwich. It is limited, on the north, by the 42d degree of latitude, and on the extreme south by the 35th degree of latitude. Its general shape is that of an irregular parallelogram, from which the lower or southwestern portion has been cut off by a diagonal southeasterly line; the missing portion forms a part of the State of California on the west. The Great Basin is made up of a succession of low hills, or minor mountain ranges, running very nearly north and south, with long valleys between them. All of these mountains are more or less metalliferous. On the western rim, marking the eastern flank or foothills of the Sierra, we find granites, porphyries, and propylites. Here we note the great Comstock lode, with its free-milling gold and silver ores, and still further south the once prominent and the now reviving gold and silver-bearing districts of Esmeralda County, Nevada, and of Morro County, California. Next, at some distance to the east, we find the mining districts at and near Unionville, in Humboldt County. Still further to the east we find the Battle Mountain copper-silver district, north from the railroad, and southerly therefrom the Austin or Reese River, Belmont, and other districts. POTASH is of prime importance as a plant food and is also widely used in industry. The term "potash was applied to a crude pearlash obtained by evaporating, in iron pots, solutions leached from plant ashes. Later it included caustic potash obtained by treating pot ashes with lime, and now it is applied generally to various compounds of potassium used by agriculture and industry. Herein it applies to the theoretical equivalent in potassium oxide (K20)--a compound never found in nature or manufactured in commerce but generally used as a common denominator for comparison of all potassium compounds. Potash was made from plant ashes at an early date, but potassium in mineral form was not noted until 1797, when it was identified in leucite.3 The importance to plant life of potash in the soil was first recognized by von Liebig3 and his published reference thereto appeared in 1840. In 1843, potash was discovered in the brine of a well drilled for salt near Stassfurt. HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN POTASH INDUSTRY Among the colonists reaching Virginia in 1608 were men from Poland skilled in making potash from wood ashes19 and records show that the production of potash was begun in other colonies also, soon after their establishment. The American product entered the trade in 1635, and at various times since that date the production of potash for industry has been subsidized by the Government or protected by tariffs. The production of potash from wood ashes reached its peak in 1825. Beginning in 1823, a cheaper product, sodium carbonate, made by the Leblanc process, was substituted for much of the potash used in industry. The activation energy for steady state creep above -500°C is observed to be independent of the applied stress although it varies from -67 kcal per mole at 2 at. pct Si to -100 kcal per mole at 11 at. pct Si due to changes in crystallographic order. The magnitude of the activation energy, by comparison with Fe-A1 alloys, indicates FeSi type of order in certain alloys. X-ray results confirmed the presence of FeSi type of order. It is proposed that dislocation climb is the rate controlling mechanism for all the alloys. It has been demonstrated that when a diffusion mechanism is the rate controlling process, the formation of a superlattice in brass,1 Fe3A1,2 Ni3Fe,3-5 and Feco6 1) increases the creep resistance, and 2) increases the activation energy for steady state creep. Furthermore, a study of creep in Fe-15 to 20 at. pct A1 alloys7 has revealed that as the alloy composition approaches the long-range order field, there is an increase in the activation energy for steady state creep which is thought to be due to an increase in short range order. Fe-A1 and Fe-Si alloys are similar in that they both form the DO3 superlattice in which aluminum or silicon atoms have only iron atoms as first and second nearest neighbors. There are, however, two important differences between the alloy systems: 1) The superlattice formation at -350°C commences at -10 at. pct si8 as compared to -20 at. pct Al,9 and 2) Fe-A1 alloys form a FeAl (B2 type) super-lattice where aluminum atoms have all iron first nearest neighbors even at 22 at. pct Al, but so far no similar FeSi superlattice has been observed. With the similarity between Fe-A1 and Fe-Si alloys in mind, alloys of iron with 2 to 11 at. pct Si were examined for variations with composition of the activation energy for steady state creep and of creep strength. The temperature range of greatest interest was above 1/2 TM (TM is the absolute melting temperature) where it is usually observed that diffusion is the rate controlling process. A subsidiary X-ray investigation of the Fe-Si system was undertaken in an attempt to define the position of the order-disorder boundary as a function of cooling rate. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS a) Creep. Specimens whose gage length was 1.5 in. and with a cross-section 0.04 by 0.08 in. were strained in tension by a lever-arm arrangement, and the load was adjusted between each creep test to maintain constant stress. The apparatus and mode of operation have been fully described in a previous publication.7 As each test produced a creep strain of 0.25 pct, the variation in stress during the test was negligible. Creep strain was measured at the end of one of the alloy steel grips by a displacement transducer with the out-of-balance potential being recorded on a variable speed recorder. The full-scale deflection of the recorder could be varied in steps to give limits of sensitivity of between 0.1 and 0.001 pct creep strain. The alloys, Table I, were made available by the Metallurgical Department, National Physical Laboratory (N.P.L.), england,10 and by the Research Department, General Electric Co. (G.E.), Schenectady, N.Y. They were hot worked at -850°C, warm worked at 550° to 650°C, and recrystallized in vacuum at -750°C to give a grain diameter of -0.1 mm. All the alloys had a very low impurity content; those from the N.P.L., for which a complete analysis is available,&apos;&apos; show carbon less than 0.026 pct, manganese less than 0.006 pct, and oxygen plus nitrogen less than 0.0024 pct. b) X-ray Procedure. A General Electric XRD-5 X-ray set with a focussing lithium fluoride mono-chromator in the diffracted beam, and a pulse height analyzer to eliminate harmonic wavelengths of the cobalt radiation, was used to investigate the structure of several very fine grained (grain diameter <.01 mm) Fe-Si alloys after the following heat treatments: 1) Quenched from 700°C, 2) slow cooled from 650°C (-40°C per hr), and 3) very slowly cooled from 400° to 100°C (10°C per hr with a 24 hr anneal every 100°C). The method of obtaining the diffraction pattern over the range of 20 from 15 to 45 deg was to count for at least 100 sec every l/3 deg with a slit subtending 1 deg in 20 at the focus; the probable counting error was less than 2 pct.

In selecting the subject, "Acceleration of the Rate of Corrosion by High Constant Stresses,&apos;&apos; for the 1940 Institute of Metals Division Lecture, I have been influenced by its highly theoretical and speculative nature as well as by the great practical importance of the correct interpretation and appraisal of the engineering significance of the phenomenon. I lay no claim to originality in talking on this topic, since it has been the subject of discussion for over a quarter of a century. However, as our technical thinking advances, old phenomena take on new and more significant aspects. In our studies at the Aluminum Research Laboratories, we have encountered many perplexing and seemingly contradictory results and have been fascinated by the problem of dovetailing all of the many pieces of information to make a complete picture. I hope that in the brief period of this lecture I may share with you some of the enjoyment we have had in attempting to meet this challenge to metallurgical science. The emphasis generally has been placed on the spontaneous failure by cracking of a metal under the combined action of high stress and corrosion, hence the present-day use of the terms "stress corrosion" or "stress corrosion cracking." The older term "season cracking," applied more specifically to copper-base alloys, includes, by inference, the element of time. For the purpose of the discussion today I will use "stress corrosion" to cover broadly the effect of stress in accelerating the rate of corrosion of metals. To stay within the limits of allotted time the disrussiorl will cover the effect of high static stresses rather than repeated or dynamic stresses, which would take us into the related field of corrosion-fatigue. The subject is particularly appropriate for an Institute of Metals Division Lecture because much the same phenomenon has been observed in almost all metal systems. Thus, in addition to the season cracking of brass may also be mentioned the "caustic embrittlement" of steel boiler

Discussion of the paper of Ernest Stütz, presented at the New York Meeting, October, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 79, July, 1913, pp. 1257 to 1265. H. 0. HOFMAN, Boston, Mass.:-I have hunted in vain for a figure which gives a dehydration temperature of cement. I was wondering if Mr. Stütz had a figure of that kind. E. STÜTZ :-No, I am afraid I have not. H. 0. HOFMAN :-I believe some figures have been published that cement disintegrates at 400° or 500° C. It seems tome a very low temperature. Mr. Stütz just made the statement that the disintegration of this briquette begins at the temperature at which the briquette begins to sinter. E. STÜTZ :-Above the sintering point. H. 0. HOFMAN :-The sintering point would be about 1,200° C. E. STÜTZ :-Yes, roughly speaking. I am afraid I have no information about the exact degree of dehydration. H. O. HOFMAN :-I have looked a great deal for such a figure and I have not been able to obtain it. Professor Howe says I might have tried myself. But my interests were directed in another line; although-that is, perhaps, a good suggestion. CHAIRMAN RICHARDS:-Is not Portland cement sometimes used for the test in a cupellation furnace and a drying-out furnace ? H. O. HOFMAN :-Yes, it is used, but that is a higher temperature, of course. But I have been trying to get a figure as to where it loses all its water. I understand it begins to lose water at 500° C. But there are different silicates or hydrosilicates in the cement, so that one would have four or five or sit figures to show the different stages at which the cement loses its water. CHAIRMAN RICHARDS :-I would ask whether the use of this material in blast furnaces has shown increased capacity of furnace or decreased consumption of fuel.

The term "modern automatic baghouses" as used in the title of this paper is intended to designate a general type of mechanical fume filter, introduced some 20 years ago and gradually improved since that time. It is characterized by its small filtering bags, enclosed in groups of 15 to 30 in steel compartments, and by its frequency of shaking, as compared to the old type of baghouse, which uses much larger bags, shaken at much longer intervals. Automatic baghouses are produced by a number of well-known manufacturers. Some recently constructed baghouses of the old type have embodied some of the principles of the automatic type, in that they are divided into several compartments, with separate fans for the different compartments, and flue headers arranged so that when the fan to any one compartment is shut down preparatory to shaking the bags in that compartment, the bags are put under suction by the draft from the other fans, thus making possible more efficient cleaning of the bags. These baghouses have motor-driven shaking mechanisms, and generally are operated under higher pressure and shaken at more frequent intervals than was the practice with the old style baghouse, and consequently have greater filtering capacity per unit of bag area. It is possible to interconnect the fan motors and the motors driving the bag-shaking mechanism, with suitable relays and timing devices, so that the operation of this type of baghouse also becomes to a considerable extent automatic. These baghouses are intermediate between the old style of baghouses, strictly speaking, and the completely automatic baghouses. They may he considered just as modern as the latter, and their proponents can no doubt cite many advantages for them. The authors are less familiar with them than with other types, and the following discussion will be limited to a comparison of the automatic baghouses and old style baghouses, with particular reference to the experience of The Eagle-Picher Lead Co. and The Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Company.
