ON THIS page is a photograph of a machine that has played a key role in the recent history of Kennecott's Ray mine, situated in the Mineral Creek District, Pinal County, Arizona. It is a huge, rugged, Diesel-powered, rubber-tired truck, having a capacity for carrying fifty tons of ore. It has, to a substantial degree, revolutionized the business of moving broken rock by cutting down both maintenance and operating costs. The mechanism of activation of ZnS by metal ions and the subsequent flotation induced by xanthate has been considered as a surface redox reaction. By ultraviolet (UV) irradiation of ZnS suspensions, the normally inert ZnS is caused to react with xanthate in the absence of activator. By similar UV irradiation, the rate of adsorption-exchange of activator ions at the ZnS-H2O interface is also increased. Mechanisms of these reactions are proposed and compared to current electrochemical and semiconducting models of sulfide flotation.

EFFORT to develop fundamental quantitative information and improved technique in the production of petroleum has long been faced with difficulties of a particularly evasive nature, owing to a combination of circumstances. In the first place, petroleum comes from far below the ground, out of sight, so that information derived from indirect observations must be extrapolated to reservoir conditions. If one does not force the analogy too far, the petroleum engineer may be said to be somewhat in the position of the astronomer. The actual phenomena which he wishes to observe in detail appear at a place so deep in the earth?s crust that personal observations and direct experiments are impossible.

In 1961, a research program started at Columbia into the mechanical aspects of flotation,* and certain ends are now in view. The purpose of this note is to explain these tentative conclusions in the hope of stimulating discussion and eliciting new data, especially industrial data, with which to test the views expressed. The variables presently under consideration are impeller rotational speed, N, volumetric air rate, Q, and impeller diameter, D, the latter being the parameter chosen to designate cell size. THE GRADE AND RECOVERY SURFACES With a given ore, chemical treatment, and flotation machine, both grade, G, and recovery, R, are functions of N and Q. THE problem of sheet metal formability is one which has received a vast amount of attention during recent years. In spite of the great amount of study and experimental work which has been devoted to this problem, many of its fundamental aspects are still not well understood. No generally satisfactory test has been developed which is capable of providing a reasonably adequate evaluation of sheet metal formability, particularly in borderline cases. Anomalies persistently arise in which a lot of supposedly satisfactory material exhibits excessive breakage when formed. This lack of suitable technological tests greatly hinders the design of new parts and the substitution of new materials in parts of existing design, frequently necessitating considerable costly trial and error experimentation on an actual production basis. When, at the beginning of World War II, it became apparent that mass production methods of forming would be required in the aircraft industry if the large numbers of military aircraft needed were to be supplied, renewed attention was focussed on the problem of sheet metal formability. It was widely recognized that the formability requirements placed on sheet metals had been steadily increasing in severity through the years, especially as greater and greater emphasis was placed on streamlined designs with the resultant freer application of doubly curved surfaces. The recent advent of several new high strength aluminum alloys of more limited formability than some of the older alloys also served to emphasize the need for new approaches to the problem. It seemed evident that progress in the technology of sheet metal forming would depend to a great extent on the development of more reliable criteria for the evaluation of formability. Although the problem is admittedly very complex, the most logical approach appeared to be through studies of the fundamental material properties of sheet metals, especially under complex stress conditions simulating those prevailing in actual forming operations. Most previous investigations have failed to make full use of existing knowledge of fundamental material properties, and in many instances have attempted correlations with properties which are now recognized as being ambiguous in nature. There is no new outstanding fact to be noted concerning the development of petroleum production and research in France and her possessions during 1935. France.—Pechelbronn remains the only important producing field in France. The total output has reached 538,921 bbl., showing a small decrease on last year's figures. Out of this, 302,737 bbl. was extracted by drilling and 236,184 bbl. (44 per cent) was obtained by means of shafts and galleries. Exploration of deeper formations was still in progress, and resulted in the discovery of a new Middle Triassic (Muschel-Kalk) producing horizon. In the vicinity of Hirtzbach (South Alsace) shallow exploration tests (500 ft.) were drilled by the Société de Pechelbronn, oil indications being found in the Tertiary. Two more important wells are now drilling in deeper horizons. The Chantenay well (Niévre) was finished in August, 1935, at a depth of 3544 ft.1 A test is under progress in Savoie. South of Gabian, at Pezenas, the erection of a rig is nearly completed.

THE method usually employed in accurate determinations of sulhur in pig-iron and steel is to treat a weighed sample of borings in a flask with muriatic acid, and to pass the gaseous products through an alkaline solution of lead or silver, which precipitates all the sulphur of the sulphuretted hydrogen in the form of sulphide of lead or silver. The sulphide thus formed is subsequently oxidized by aqua regia, bromine, or other oxidizing agent, and the sulphuric acid formed precipitated in the usual way by chloride of barium. I have substituted for the alkaline metallic solution, a solution of permanganate of potash in the strength of one gramme of permanganate to 200 cubic centimetres of water, and find that it gives results quite as accurate as those obtained by using an ammoniacal solution of silver. By the employment of the permanganate it will be readily seen that there is considerable saving of time and work. In order to test the accuracy of the method, six samples of pig-iron borings were weighed out (about six grammes each) and treated identically

To assist the taxpayer of the oil and gas industry in correctly and expeditiously preparing his Federal tax returns, the Bureau of Internal Revenue has prepared a "Manual for the Oil and Gas Industry Under the Revenue Act of 1918." Although the endeavor has been made to anticipate all questions that may be asked, it is recognized that such a manual is only general and cannot cover all cases that may exist. The Manual is based largely upon information gathered during the fall of the year 1918 by a corps of geologists, technologists, and engineers. The investigation was undertaken primarily to furnish a basis for arriving at valuations, and depletion and depreciation deductions in connection with oil and gas properties. All fields in the United States were canvassed. Records of production of thousands of properties were collected and tabulated. These were carefully classified and studied by the most competent and experienced men in the country and the average future production curves and tables of valuation data were produced as a result of this study. At the office of the Chief of Engineers, Washington, there is a unique collection of engineering material used and developed in the present war. It. is a most interesting group of war devices, from the special trench shovel that excavates both gas and water, to the standard gage locomotives that were sent to France so complete that they were lifted from the ships by cranes, placed on the-rails on shore, filled with water, fired up, and moved out from underneath the cranes under their own steam. Everything is exhibited either by models, or by photograph where the original samples are too large to admit of demonstration in an ordinary office. The forestry section has an interesting exhibit of the wonderful work clone in France; where, owing to the shortage of coal and the necessity for burning wood, the Forestry Unit of the A. E. F. in one month stacked up 60 mi. of cord wood (80,000 cords); also cut 6.6 mi. of timber, stacked 12 ft. long, and 10 ft. high, containing 50,000,000 hoard feet of sawed timber.

ROGERS*—The conclusions drawn in this paper have important practical significance to the steelmaker and the metallurgist if, in practice, it is demonstrated that metallic copper in the charge will pick up sulphur from the furnace atmosphere and thus increase the sulphur content of the bath. The problem of residual copper arising out of increasing copper in the scrap available to the industry is, in itself, a matter of concern to the steel maker. If, in addition to the often detrimental effects of high residual copper upon the physical properties of some important steel grades, there is to be a complication of the sulphur problem, then we have a set of conditions that bodes no good for the open hearth melter and the open hearth metallurgist. It contains about 70,000 volumes and 90,000 pamphlets, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library, through its Library Service Bureau, can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive especial attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is, desired and not include collateral natter which may not be of interest. The time spent in-searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more, promptly and-in more usable shape.

If it be admitted that the use of the metric system of measurement is desirable, and that it will be well, as urged by one of our engineering societies, to show upon all our plans or drawings a metric scale in addition to a scale of inches, then it becomes important to introduce some ready means of drawing these scales. For many present purposes it is quite sufficient to space off and to draw them with the common dividers and the right-line pen, but if the number of drawings made or copied in an engineer's office, and upon which scales must be shown, is more than two or three daily, then some more mechanical or automatic means should be provided. For a great majority of detail drawings, a simple transcript of the surface of a good two-foot rule would answer every purpose, and probably the best comparative showing of the metric scale would be made by drawing a line of millimeters close by the side of the line of sixteenths. WITH the extensive deposits of potash minerals which have been dis-covered in the southwestern states, and their rapid development, a permanent. American supply of potassium compounds is now assured. The 325-year history of the potash industry in this country has been told by H. I. Smith1, of the U.S. Geological Survey, and the more recent activities of the Survey and of American potash companies were described last year by the same author2. In fact, it may be stated that so great is the productive capacity that two mines in New Mexico and one in California are able to supply more than half a million tons of crude and refined salts over and above that produced for agricultural purposes. The era of scarcity has given way to an era of superabundance. This situation makes it desirable for the potash producer to look for other applications for his product, and it is with this in mind that the writer presents some information pertaining to present and possible future uses for potassium compounds in the ceramic industry.

In the latter part of December a batch of amalgam was retorted and the tin in the retort uncovered while at a low red heat, and allowed to cool slowly to a temperature more suitable for ladling into moulds. It was then ladled and made what appeared to be nice, white, malleable block tin. On February 15th our attention is called to the fact that the tin is brittle, and on examination we find that the molecular condition of the pigs has changed to the extent of one-half its material. The change shows itself by an enlargement appearing on the surface something like crystallization, and comes in spots. The condition of the metal in these spots is very peculiar. It has changed from a malleable metal to a brittle one, with a structure somewhat resembling stibnite, and a color very considerably darker gray than tin. Los Angeles may well be host to one of the most historic gatherings of AIME members Feb. 16 to 19, 1953, when the 175th General Meeting is scheduled to take place. Plans in the formulative stage indicate that the meeting will be one of the largest ever held by AIME. Headquarters will be the Hotel Statler, now nearing completion of construction. The hotel will be one of the most modern hostelries of the century. The first technical session, of which there will be more than 75, will take place Monday, February 16. Mineral Industries Education Div. and the Board of Directors meet Sunday, February 15. Sessions will end with a meeting of the Council of Section Delegates on Thursday. Deadline for papers that may be preprinted for presentation at the meeting is Sept. 15, 1952. However, division program committees may list papers for presentation after that date if they choose. Various committees are engaged in formulating final plans for the meeting. Developments will be announced as progress is made.

As air-pollution regulations become increasingly more stringent, increased significance is being placed on the amount of sulfur present in coals used for steam generation. These regulations are aimed at minimizing the pollution of the atmosphere with noxious gases such as the sulfur oxides that are formed and emitted when coal is burned. Two meet these future requirements, a definite need exists to reduce the sulfur content of some of the coals used for steam generation. Reducing pyritic sulfur involves liberating the pyrite from the coal and then removing it. The specific gravity of pyrite is high (5.0) compared to that of coal (about 1.2, mineral-free), and standard coal-washing devices, such as wet concentrating tables, will efficiently remove pyrite particles larger than about 100 mesh. Particles below this size will be entrained in the table water and will be carried into the clean coal product. Techniques such as froth flotation are of little benefit for pyrite reduction because the flotation characteristics of pyrite are similar to those of coal.
