The principle of "bed blending" in the agglomeration of materials is about 56 years old, but de- spite all education via technical papers, operating reports and results from functioning installations, the concepts of blending are still somewhat vague. Confusion exists between "mixing", "blending," and the basic role of each. The terms "blending" and mixing" are often used interchangeably, yet they describe two different processes. As properly understood and applied, a blend is a combination of different varieties of material which produces a desired quality, or the mingling of different elements to form a harmonious whole. In other words, blending is a process of combining granular materials by mechanical means, wherein the final product, or a portion thereof, must contain an exact proportional amount of every one of the several different materials which contributed to the mass and wherein all particles are so thoroughly intermingled with each other as to have lost their individual identities and become a part of the whole so that when a portion of the blend is taken at any time it will be substantially identical, chemically and physically, to any other portion taken throughout.

Up to now we have spoken optimistically of the many potential savings in capital and operating costs to be obtained from the selection of larger diameter and horsepower grinding mills. Such mills may well be the correct choice for one grinding plant but could be absolutely wrong for another plant. It is emphasized here that many significant factors other than the capital cost, labor, grinding media and power savings are involved in the sizing and selection of the optimum grinding circuit. The following discussion covers some of these factors and their relationship to larger mill design. The first consideration is: What is the grinding circuit supposed to do? In most instances it is one or both of the following: 1. Grind the feed material fine enough to liberate the desired minerals but with a minimum of over- grinding. Examples are preparation of ore for flotation, gravity separation, etc. 2. Grind to some pre-specified particle size or particle surface area. Examples of this are cement manufacture or the preparation of feed material for pelletizing; other examples are preparation for chemical reactions or ceramic manufacture.

Beyond the industrial suburbs of Melbourne to the southeast are brown coal deposits just under the fertile soil of the Latrobe Valley. These deposits rank as one of the wonders of the world. The manner in which this resource is put to use is one of the great engineering accomplishments of our time and also a prime example of Australian elan. The brown coal, with over 60% water content, occurs in beds from 200 to 400 ft thick, under 50 ft of cover. Fifty thousand tons of coal per day move in a nearly continuous stream from mining face to boilers. The power plants supply two thirds of the State of Victoria's requirements, about 800 megawatts. Surge capacity between mine and power plant is sufficient for 12 hr steaming time! Victorian brown coals have been known since the middle of the 19th century. However, it took a strike of bituminous coal miners in 1915 to bring brown coal permanently into the picture as a fuel for power generation. In Australia, power generation is a State function. The great development of brown coals has been under the State Electricity Commission of Victoria.

IN treating carnotite ores by carbonate leaching it is often necessary to subject the ore to a prior roast. Among the advantages that may result from roasting are: 1) improvement in settling and filtering characteristics of the ore; 2) destruction of carbonaceous impurities that would otherwise contaminate the leach solution and consume carbonate reagent; and 3) substantial increase in extraction of vanadium, which is usually low when the un- roasted ore is leached. Recovery of vanadium may be an important factor in processing carnotite ores, and the fact that vanadium is usually recovered in good yield by acid leaching has often been an economic advantage over results obtained with carbonate leaching. It has been found that response of an ore to carbonate leaching, following roasting, depends primarily on its composition and on the conditions of the prior roast treatment, particularly with regard to the roasting temperature, the atmosphere maintained above the charge during roasting and cooling, and the presence of certain reagents. These factors, especially the last, virtually determine the extractions of uranium and vanadium attainable by carbonate leaching, as well as the reagent consumption on leaching, whereas adjustment of the leaching conditions has only a limited influence.

In any discussion of steel pouring too often refractories quality assumes a high level of importance. Unfortunately when one considers the many and varied conditions to which pouring refractories are exposed, it is difficult to isolate the true role of refractories quality alone. Some of the more important, yet often overlooked, variable conditions bearing on pouring performance are heat size, tap time and temperature, steel chemistry, ladle additions, ladle height and preheat, mechanical conditions of the pouring mechanism, hot top or non hot topped ingots and, ingot size, which determine total number of shutoffs, direct or tundish pouring, ingot filling rates, metallurgical demands, etc, etc. These considerations apply for either conventional or slide gate pouring of ingots and, to a large extent, even strand casting. In any event probably the most significant factor on pouring performance in any individual shop is what is considered an "OK" pour. We find considerable variance in this qualification, not only between Republic Steel meltshops, but throughout the industry. Therefore, it is a worthless exercise to draw comparisons attributable to refractories quality alone, except for similar conditions in a single shop.

Resident Instruction: The character of an institution, the varying demands made upon it, its geographical location, its own internal organization, all are factors that predispose against rigid standards, curriculum-making, research programs, and extension services. Mineral industries educators must keep in mind that the under- graduate is the core of the college, a philosophy that implies a set of inviolable principles.1 They will want to turn out graduates with overwhelming talent in their field, together with incorruptible ethics, prepared to deal with people, as well as with theories and things. Curriculum-making is a popular educational pastime. No course makes or breaks a curriculum. The particular qualifications and interests of individual students must find expression. However, selection must be made under guidance so that the student's individual needs are realized. In this way, specialization can be introduced into curricula previously conceived to be of general science or engineering nature only. In its essence, formal education is society's endeavor to put old heads on young shoulders, to implant the experience of centuries in the youthful generation. THE engineer and the conservationist agree that effective water drive is the desirable reservoir production mechanism. Water drive may result either from the expansion of edge water, the reservoir water bordering an oil pool, or from the artesian flow of edge water from the outcrop. Thus, the extent of the reservoir has an important bearing upon both the rate and the ultimate quantity of water influx to an oil pool. Lens-type reservoirs are generally recognizable, but the complete structure of the more important domal types, having possible limitations from crestal and synclinal faulting, is not well understood. The delineation from cores, electrical logs and exploitation phenomena of the crestal portions of reservoirs is increasingly exact. This paper suggests that inference from these factual pictures, combined with the scattered well and geophysical data of the synclines and with consideration of the dynamics of structural formation, may be applied to solving the complete geologic structure. Since faulting on the domes and in the synclines may effectively seal and thus limit the size of a reservoir and bar additional water influx, consideration of geologic structure and its possible effects is essential to complete analysis and prediction of reservoir performance.

THE American Institute of Mining Engineers was organized in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania by men who were primarily interested in anthracite. Its first meeting, at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., in the Northern Anthracite field, on May 16, 1871, resulted from a call sent out by three outstanding men of the anthracite .industry: Eckley B. Coxe, R. P. Rothwell, and Martin Coryell. The best known of these was Eckley B. Coxe, who was the manager of large hold¬ings operated by him and his family,. and who is remembered as the inventor of a special grate for burning very fine anthracite, known as the Coxe traveling grate, which is still very widely used. R. P. Rothwell was a well-known consulting engineer of the region, as was Martin Coryell, who was associated with another well-known anthracite family, the Pardees. There is no record of the discussions that resulted in this initial meeting, but it is safe to assume that the formation of the Institute was largely influenced, through appreciation by the founders, of the necessity for a free exchange of information covering the whole of the mining industry. THE question indicated in this title was put by letter to a number of my friends working in various industries, who have charge of young metallurgical graduates. The replies were almost unanimous in stating that the college training should cover in the most .thorough manner possible those sciences which are the fundamentals - of engineering. Mathematics, physics, mechanics, electricity, chemistry, physical chemistry, and their applications to actual problems of life were mentioned in most of the letters I received. Some writers added also business law, economics,. and finance. One reply expressed it: "These subjects, well founded, mixed with good judgment, well applied, should enable the .young man to carry on the art of life successfully." One answer stated frankly what is really wanted: "As much as possible.' ' This writer mentioned .the sciences as being very important, but he wishes men ' to be trained in metallurgy also, and he concedes the omission of some advanced chemistry and physic's to secure the metallurgy. He emphasized particularly. the a we. desirability of work in college to development' He concludes his letter with a repetition of his slogan that what is wanted is as much as is possible.

ROCK-DRILL steel has an important bearing on costs in many mining operations, both directly and indirectly. Direct factors include such items as shop expense, steel consumed per ton of ore produced, cost of distribution and the dust hazard. The latter, although no specific amount may be assigned to it, is an ever-present problem, and is receiving increased attention as the science of mining progresses. Indirectly drill-steel performance affects consumption of compressed air, maintenance of drills and drilling speed. The latter, in turn, increases or retards the tempo of mining and development. These factors, while not all inclusive, are preponderant in their importance. Thus it is evident that in an extensive operation drill-steel expense may run to many thousands of dollars and that thoughtful research leading toward more efficient practice is warranted. At the Gateway Coal Co.'s mine, about 70 miles above Pittsburgh's Point on the Monongahela River, a battery of television cameras stands guard over what is billed as the longest conveyor belt system ever installed in a coal mine. In all, this system consists of 9% miles of 42- in. and 48-in. wide belting, and is capable of transporting 500 tph at a speed of 625 fpm from working face to the tipple located outside the mine. Gateway Coal, located near Waynesburg, Pa., is owned jointly by Jones & Laughlin. Steel Corp. (64% %), Pittsburgh Steel Co. (22lh%), and Shenango Inc. (13%). Managed by J & L, the mine is under a long-term lease from the Hillman Coal and Coke Co., which formerly operated it as the Emerald mine. Hillman produced 700,000 tons per year of metallurgical-grade coal from this mine, but since J & L et al. took over in 1962, annual output has increased to 1.7 million tons. Mine capacity will reach its peak early in 1964 when total production hits an annual rate of 3.1 million tons.

The flow of gases, particularly radon and methane, into the mine atmosphere is a problem traditionally controlled by ventilation-dilution techniques. More recently, a preventative approach has been to seal underground surfaces with a polymeric coating to act as a barrier against the influx of dangerous gases. H However, a study by the Israel Government Research Station indicates that unless the rock surface is perfectly sealed, much of the labor to reduce interstitial gas flow is lost to the effects of barometric "breathing" from the rock pores. Previous research has reported the increased frequency of coal mine explosions during periods of barometric pressure minima,1 and the phenomena has been explained through correlation of the observed increase in mine gas concentrations during periods of low barometric pressure with the connective flow of interstitial gases from rock pores into the arsine atmosphere when pressure was actually falling.234 While changes ill barometric pressure arc rapidly transmitted to the mine atmosphere, response in the rock interstices is sluggish, momentarily creating a pressure differential between the mine atmosphere and the interstitial gases. Responding to the pressure gradient, this interstitial gas flows until pressures are equalized.

TRACKLESS equipment is being used by the Coplay Cement Manufacturing Co. to develop a folded limestone deposit economically and safely with inexperienced men. Cost and quality of development stone results in a saving when it is used in- stead of outside sources of limestone. This favorable cost has been attained by following a methods development and training program described in this paper. It is expected that further savings in favor of the mined stone will be made when stopes now being prepared are in production. The present equipment will be used for loading from stope draw points. The limestone is blended with quarried cement rock to serve as raw material for Portland cement, first produced in this country by Coplay Cement Manufacturing Co. from a process developed by its president, David 0. Saylor, in 1873. For many years the cement rock alone or with a small amount of added limestone was used for raw materials. Later as specifications were raised and the richer portions of quarries were depleted, limestone from outside sources was required in increasing amounts. In 1925 D. J. Uhle, the general manager, began to prospect company property for limestone.

When the subject of plant computers is brought up most people visualize the computer's con- trolling the entire plant with very little operator intervention. Actually, this picture is true today in only a limited number of cases and will certainly not be true in the minerals industries for many years to come. There are several ways in which a plant computer can significantly contribute to improving plant operation and closed loop control is only one of these. First of all, for good plant control, two basic requirements must be met. First, the operator must get good information feedback from the process and then he must know what action to take in response to this information. Control information can be obtained through instruments, laboratory analyses, or through simple visual observation. If it is timely and accurate and the operator knows how to use it, then we have the makings of a good plant control system. The computer can be of help in both these areas by getting good data back to the operator and in helping to develop a good control scheme for the plant.

Most of US, in this hurrying age, take little pains to preserve such records of our doings as will make the work of' our biographers easy. Now and then there is an exception, and Dr. Trippel was one. Methodical in all his habits, he kept diaries and journals comprising his own personal experiences, the details and results of his numerous scientific investigations, and his impressions concerning men and events; and also copies of all his technical essays, published by various societies or periodicals. It is a striking instance of " the irony of fate," that these carefully-preserved materials, which would now have a real historical, as well as biographical value, were totally destroyed by an accidental fire a few years ago. In addition to my own recollections of an acquaintance covering more than thirty years, I am indebted, for the fads upon which this sketch is based, chiefly to Mr. Engene J. Trippel, a son of the deceased, and now Register of the United States Land Office at Tucson, Arizona. Mr. Trippel, however, frankly confesses that his own knowledge of his father's work is, in the absence of written records, imperfect.

Asbestos fiber, before it can be used commercially, is separated from the rock in which it is naturally found. Johns-Manville Corp. is currently constructing a 12-story fiber mill, of which the first half is completed and in operation. The mill will be the largest in the world, producing about 30 pct of the world's fiber. It was engineered and constructed by a cooperative effort of the engineers of the Canadian Johns-Manville Fibre Div. and the general plant engineering dept. Detailed design work on all phases of the job was done by Surveyer, Ninniger & Chenevert of Montreal. A series of crushing, screening, air aspirating and air separating processes will separate the fiber from 10 tons of rock per min. But to process this amount of ore about 90 tons of air per min will be handled in the aspirating and dust-collecting systems. To express this in more common units, 2.5 million cfm of air will be required. All this air will pass through a bag-type continuous automatic filter and will be expelled to atmosphere in summer or returned to the mill for heating during the winter months.

During the past two years, Hecla Mining Co. has used shotcrete for ground support purposes with substantial cost savings. Hecla's experience indicates that shotcrete is an extremely effective ground support material which can be successfully employed in problem areas where various conventional systems would fail. To date, Hecla's use of shotcrete has been limited to openings where long-term high-quality support was required, to specific areas where exceptionally difficult ground conditions were encountered [ ] and, occasionally, to stope support. It is anticipated that when the necessary engineering and procurement of the components of an efficient materials handling system have been accomplished, shotcrete will be used on a routine basis in stoping and development situations. The real future of shotcrete is based, however, on the fact that this form of support offers greater opportunity for mechanization than rock bolt, timber or steel. Unlike all other support operations, which are cyclic, shotcrete is a continuous process, and therein lies its potential for incorporation into an efficient rapid excavation system. Hecla has obtained and operated both wet- and dry-process shotcrete application equipment. The operational characteristics of the two processes are presented and discussed below.
