"INTRODUCTION The term ""friability"" as applied to coal may be defined as the physical property of coal which expresses its tendency to become reduced in size during handling as a result of such external forces as impact and attrition. Thus friability is a quantitative concept and property, and hence can only be defined in relative terms or in terms of measurement. Methods of measurement are difficult to formulate and apply because coal is anything but homogeneous in physical structure and chemical constitution. aMoreover, friability itself is a composite property obviously dependent upon a group of other specific characteristics such as cleavage, fracture, tenacity, hardness, and elasticity, which vary from coal to coal with change in rank and even between individual coals of the same rank. These characteristics affect the friability values of different coals to varying degrees, but this fact does not impair the usefulness of and the need for friability measurements.The amount of breakage or degradation in size that a coal suffers in mining, preparation, and subsequent handling depends upon its inherent friability and the severity of the handling treatment which it receives from the time it is taken from the bed until it reaches the consumer. The value of the coal to the producer and jobber depends in large measure upon these same factors--friability and severity of treatment—because the larger sizes still command a premium in the ordinary market. Although much has been accomplished by the coal-producing industry in minimizing the breakage of coal in mining and preparation, it is apparent that additional reductions in breakage must await further improvements in design of coal-handling equipment. Such improvements will result from more intensive investigations of the extent of breakage or degradation in size occasioned by specific mining and handling operations and the development and application of standardized methods of evaluating friability.The work described in this report was undertaken to assist in the development of standard methods for evaluating the friability of coal. Specifically, the work deals with a Comparison of the various methods previously proposed for estimating the friability of coal and coal products. This same objective is now being sought at a number of other institutions, both in the United States and Canada, by a committee of the American Society for Testing Materials. It is believed that by providing additional information concerning a property of coal pertinent to its increased usefulness, the work described will supplement and increase the useful of the data which long have been, and still are being, furnished by the bureau of Mines on the composition of coals of the United States."

"INTR0DUCTIONThis publication is a third of a series devoted to falls of roof and coal in coal mines of the Western States. It gives the results of examinations of the mines of the Rock Springs coal District of Sweetwater County, Wyo., which represent the principal coal beds therein and approximately 75 percent of total production of the State.A study was made of safety conditions at all the producing mines of the district and suggestions were offered the operators regarding methods and practices which would, in the opinion of the writer, provide additional safeguards to prevent accidents from falls of roof and coal.In presenting the subject, consideration must be given to such features as character of the coal beds, depth of cover. methods of mining, timbering practice, roof testing and supervision, and for comparative purposes to certain statistical matter bearing upon relation of accidents to their causes, tonnage produced, men employed, days worked, and lost days due to accidents during the 3—year period covered by this study.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe writer acknowledges the cooperation of the officials of the various coal companies, without whose assistance this work could not have been completed.F0UR REPRESENTATIVE COAL OPERATIONSThis report relates to four representative coal operations in the Rook Springs district of Sweetwater County, Wyo., which are referred to as mines A, B, C, and D. The tests reported in this paper were made in the East Texas field in the summer and fall of 1932 as a part of the Bureau of Mines study of the operation of flowing wells and reservoir performance; and to determine, if possible, the minimum reservoir pressure necessary to produce the wells in this field by natural flow through different sizes of flow strings. The minimum reservoir pressure that would be required to maintain natural flow through 2 1/2-inch tubing was determined experimentally for the existing energy conditions in the East Texas field. With the present available data, however, it 'is impossible to predict accurately or to determine by calculation the necessary energy requirements for maintaining the vertical flow of oil and gas mixtures under all conditions. Although some valuable data were obtained which seem to have application to the solution of problems involving vertical flow, this important research of the petroleum industry is so involved that more study of the complicating factors influencing the flow of oil-gas mixtures through vertical pipes is required. Versluys4 has presented a mathematical analysis of the vertical flow of oil and gas mixtures which covers the fundamental theories of the problem-although, as he points cut, there are factors, particularly friction, slippage, and solubility of the gas in the oil that must be mown or determined experimentally before the equations he has developed can be applied to actual

External trade strongly influences the well being of all nations. In the modern economic mechanism, no country is so well endowed that it has not to import commodities from others and to export its products in turn to make good its deficiencies, to rectify or improve its financial structure. From the standpoint of international commerce, Canada is strategically well placed. On the south she is bounded by the richest country in the world. On the east she faces the Atlantic, on the west the Pacific. On both coasts there are fine harbours to which lead great lines of railway that span the continent. Canada is now fifth among the exporting nations of the world. For disposal abroad, she has enormous quantities of primary commodities and substantial amounts of manufactured goods as well. But she is far from being self-sustaining. She is unusually dependent on foreign trade, not only because of the commodities she has to sell but because of the lack of many essential articles she does not or cannot produce. To Canada, external commerce is vastly more important than internal trade. The wealth of nations is decided by their ability to produce more than they need, to sell more than they buy, and to build up favourable balances resulting from trade or services. With few countries, however, are returns perennially satisfactory. Fruitful periods are followed by leaner years. In times of prosperity foreign credits are increased, monetary systems strengthened, reserves accumulated to withstand recurring days of strain. Today, the foundations of financial systems are being re-examined, "dogmas hitherto accepted as canonical are being questioned" . It is not only in Europe and America that men search for illumination in problems arising from monetary restrictions.

It has been thought desirable for purposes of analogy to include reference to All the members of the group of elements to which helium belongs, and, incidentally, to embody in the narrative certain other information pertinent to the subject.

During the early stages of the mining industry of the United States an apparently inexhaustible supply of high-quality, easily accessible coal made the product cheap and the attendant mining methods wasteful of recoverable coal. Because coal from advance places could be mined with less effort and a large outwit obtained as the entries advanced, much of the coal left in pillars to support the roof was lost. Squeezes often developed in these mined-over areas, or, if pillars were of sufficient size to-prevent squeeze, the roof would be so weakened by long exposure that any pillar recovery was extremely hazardous. As the value of unmined coal increased, a high recovery of the available coal became necessary. Numerous plans were tried during the period that followed, some of the methods proving successful while others were complete failures or only partly successful. As a better knowledge was pained of the roof strata and its behavior, however, pillar mining became more successful and methods suited to special roof conditions were developed.

GOLD AND SILVER, the monetary metals, have presented in the last year a striking contrast; gold has experienced unusual prosperity, while silver has been depressed more severely than ever before. Gold mining has been hailed as the only basic industry that is able to thrive on depression; the new gold produced is thought by many to be the most important material for the reconstruction of prosperity. Silver production, meanwhile, has been sinking to its level of 40 years ago, and its price to a level never before recorded. These factors have reduced the value of silver produced in 1932 to about the value of the average annual production more than a century ago, that of the decade 1801-1810. No other major commodity in world trade appears to have suffered a greater decline during the present depression.

MINING rock asphalt for use as a paving material is an industry which has grown with the spread of the good roads movement. "Mineral Industry During 1930" reports asphaltic pavements constructed, including maintenance and repair but excluding pavement constructed with road-oil, cut-back or emulsified asphalt, as grown from 23 million square yards in 1911 to a high of 144 million in 1927. In 1930 the same source reports 106 million square yards of such paving laid and, in that year, 664,871 tons of native rock asphalt were so utilized. Many states contain rock asphalt deposits of greater or less importance but in only a few places are the de¬posits being mined commercially. In the year cited Ken¬tucky produced 305,024 tons of bituminous sandstone, Texas 270,138 tons, mostly bituminous limestone, while Alabama, Oklahoma, California and Utah produced 89,709 tons of bituminous rock for road construction. In addition Utah produced 37,906 tons of the purer asphaltic products, gilsonite, wurtzilite and ozokerite, for other uses. Speaking generally, the rock asphalt is a sandstone or limestone naturally impregnated with asphalt to an extent that makes it an ideal road surfacing material without mixing or treatment other than crushing. The asphalt content of the commercial product runs 8 to 12 per cent.

ALTHOUGH the midday lunches of business associations have been re-echoing the phrases that re- search would lead us out of the depression and that the last place to economize is on research, nevertheless most executives apparently concluded that it was their neighbor who ought not to economize in research, and that in their own plants what had been discovered in 1929-30 was sufficient to lead them out of the wilderness. At any rate, I have discovered much less that seems worth noting, and compared with 1931, the report volume of the committee members is off about 40 per cent, and compared with 1929, about 80 per cent. Evidently there is some hookup with the +tee1 industry as to output, and the Report Reading Committee should investigate this and the relative use of commas and periods.

"PURPOSE OF REPORTThe purpose of this report, which is the third of a. series on the coal mines of the Western States, is to give the findings of a study of the causes and methods of prevention of accidents from falls of root and coal in the mines of Lincoln County, Wyo. The three mines covered in this report, referred to as A. B. and C, account- for 9 per cent of the coal production in the county and nearly 9 per cent of the State's total production. For comparative purposes some statistical data are presented bearing upon the relation of injuries to their causes, to tonnage produced, to men employed, to days worked, and to days lost as the result of injuries.FATALITIES IN WYOMINGTo show the necessity for this study, Table 1 given the fatalities that occurred during 1928 in the bituminous—coal mines of the United States, of the State of Wyoming of Lincoln County, and in Mines A, B, and C, followed by a brief description of the Kemmerer coal dis-trict, its coal beds and immediate roof, thickness of cover, dip of coal beds, methods of mining timbering for roof support, roof testing, and supervision. Beasley, smelter superintendent, whose generosity, sympathy, and assistance made it possible to obtain this information for the mining industry.GENERAL DISCUSSIONWhen the charge has been dropped into the lead blast furnace, it is out of control of the operator to the extent that, whatever the material is, it must practically all be melted and run out of the blast furnace. The necessary uniformity of mixture to produce slags of regular composition and the choice of the slag—forming ingredients and products to be formed can be made only before the charge to dropped.It was found (R.I. 3096) at Kellogg, where the charge is mostly sinter, that the ratio of the slag—forming ingredients taken from each tuyere was nearly constant, in contrast to the irregular composition of slags taken similarly from a furnace whose charge consisted of ingredients differing greatly in chemical and physical nature, including size. If the charge consists almost entirely of sinter, the blast furnace should then operate more uniformly."

The pigments, whose colors are due primarily to iron exides and iron hydroxides, comprise a variety of yellow, brown, red, and sometimes black paint-coloring agents, both natural and artificially prepared. The natural pigments in this group include ocher, umber, sienna, mineral paints, paint rock, and mortar colors. When the natural color or tinting power--either in the raw state or after treatment--is too weak, these pigments may be "forti- fied" or strengthened. Ocher, umber, and sienna, rhile often described as "iron oxide pigments," are also known as "earthy" rigments. Inasmuch as the iron content of these pigments is, in general, somewhat lower than that of other iron oxide pigments, the ochers, umbers, siennes, and other brown earth pigments are not discussed in the present paper. In addition to a discussion of natural or artificial pigments whose color is due to the presence of iron oxide in some form, this paper contains data on mortar colors, which are medium or low grade pigments used for tinting mortar, cement, and concrete. A great variety of materials are used for theso purposes, including "blue billy" (residue left from roast- ing pyrite), ground slate and shale, and even culm from coal washeries. Dur- ing the past three years, there has been a definite trend among the producers of iron oxide pigments to push the sales of the better grades of colors for tinting mortars. Due to the amount of low-grade coloring matter that is re- quired to impart a strong color to concrete (in soro cases as high as 15 per cent of pigment is necessary) the strength of the cement may be materially impaired. The addition of some 2 per cent of the higher grades of iron oxide to the concrete mix imparts a brighter and stronger colcr, does not weaken the material, and in the end is not as expensive as the low-grade pigments formerly used. Iron oxide pigments occur in nature in various shades and colors, but the red pigments are the most important and account for the larger part of the total red pigments used.3/ The nomenclature of these red pigments is involved and the names given to them are descriptive of the shade rather than of origin, method of produc- tion or chemical composition. In most cases the red pigments under this class may occur naturally or may be produced by heating hydrous iron oxide pigments such as yellow ocher to a sufficiently high temperature to drive off the water of composition. They may also be prepared by fortifying naturally-occurring pigments with stronger natural or synthetic oxides or with coal-tar dyes (e.g. alizarine lake), Most of the mineral reds derive their color from the presence of ferric oxide (Fe2O3), the mineral hematite. This may be present in relatively small percentages, as in the red slates and shales, or it may constitute as much as 90 per cent or more of the material, as in Spanish red. The principal iron oxide pigments used in the manufacture of paint are discussed in the following pages.

"INTRODUCTION The mines in the eastern part of the now active region of the Tri-State zinc district of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma have unusually acid water, which during periods of moderate or no rainfall is used in the mills to replace losses from evaporation, seepage, and tailings disposal. Its use has caused difficulties by corrosion of equipment and by interference with flotation.The growing importance of flotation, which requires good water, and the increasing troubles caused by the corrosion of the milling equipment have prompted the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo., to investigate the action of the waters on flotation and to undertake to develop means of obviating their harmful effects.The work was under the immediate direction of W. T. Schrenk, consulting chemist, United States Bureau of Mines, and professor of chemistry, Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, and Will H. Coghill, supervising engineer of the ore dressing section of the United States Bureau of Mines.ORIGIN OF ACID MINE WATERSRain water, carrying oxygen and carbon dioxide in solution, finds its way into the pores and crevices of the earth's crust and percolates downward through the rocks. This water and its dissolved gases exert a solvent action on many minerals, the extent of which depends upon the nature of the associated minerals.The iron sulphides are the chief sources of the 'trouble with sulphates and sulphuric acid because they oxidize so freely and contain more sulphur than is required to satisfy the iron when ferrous sulphate is formed. Galena and sphalerite may oxidize to sulphates without liberating acid. A few of the common reactions occurring in the Tri-State mine waters may be illustrated by the following equations:"

Although nickel was in use in alloys long before the Christian era, the metal was not discovered until 1751, when Cronstedt recognized it in niccolite from Sweden. The Chinese apparently used a nickel alloy, known as "pahfong" thousands of years ago and Persian coins dating farther back than 200 B.C. consist of a copper-nickel alloy similar to some of those now in use in coins. The pure metal was first prepared about 1775 and the metal was refined for commercial purposes some years later. The nickel industry did not attain much prominence until the ores in New Caledonia were discovered. Exports of ore from that country began in 1875 and since that date there has been an ever-increasing world output of nickel and a great expansion in the uses of the metal except during short periods of commercial and industrial depression. Previous to 1875, for a number of years, Norway was the chief producer, although the metal was mined also in Sweden, Finland, Italy, Germany, Austria, France, China, the United States and other countries. With the discovery of nickel deposits in the Sudbury district, Ontario, a new factor was introduced into the nickel industry and Sudbury has since become the overwhelmingly dominant feature in the world's nickel markets. Although nickel was first discovered in Canada as early as 1848 near the north shore of Lake Huron and nickel-copper sulfides were found in 1856 by surveyors working close to the present location of the important rnine at Creighton, in the Sudbury field, it was not until 1883 that any importance was attached to this field. In that year copper sulfide attracted attention where the main line of the Canadian Pacific railroad was being projected across Canada to the Pacific coast. Mining began near this discovery in 1889 but in the meantime operations had begun in 1886 in other parts of the field and by 1890 about 100,000 tons of ore had been raised. In the Sudbury field, as in Norway and at the old Lancaster Gap mine in Pennsylvania, the ore was first mined for its copper content and difficully in the refining of the copper led to the discovery of the important proportions of nickel in the ore. History The birth of the mining industry of Canada took place about 1670. According to Salone (Salone E., La Colonisation de la Nouvelle France, page 205) the first discovery of ore in the country was made by an iron-master, Monsieur de la Potardiere, near Trois Rivieres, Quebec. Under French rule some prospecting was done; but at this time no one seemed to consider the working of mines practicable. It was not until the time that Begon became Intendant, when the Marquis of Vaudreuil was Governor, that mining was attempted. Begon was a patron of industrial arts and did his best to promote home manufactures. The mining industry was developed under his regime and discoveries of copper and lead ores were made in 1730. About this time the St. Maurice Forges were erected to treat bog-iron ore, and they were in operation for many years. Prior to 1747, iron pans to the value of £21,000 were manufactured, together with bar-iron and plough-shares. About 1769, that is, ten years after the conquest by Wolfe, stoves and other articles, and, later, potash kettles, appeared. What is still more interesting to us-or was, at least, to General Wolfe-is that cannon balls made at the St. Maurice Forges delayed his operations. A map dated 1744, a copy of which appears in the report of the Ontario Bureau of Mines for 1913 (Vol. XIX), indicates the extensiveness of the wanderings of the French and also shows the location of the lead mine on the east shore of Lake Timiskaming. Bog-iron ore was turned into metal, with charcoal for fuel, at Norman-dale, Norfolk county, Ontario, in 1813, and at Clementsport, Nova Scotia, in 1825. In a volume published in 1672, reference is made to the occurrence of coal on the Atlantic seaboard, and in 1677 Monsieur Duchesneau, the Intendant, levied a royalty of twenty sous per ton on all coal taken from Cape Breton.

In the manufacture of steel by any process the refining period involves the partial elimination of the metalloids carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and silicon, by virtue of their reactions with ferrous oxide. At the end of this refining stage the metal consists chiefly of iron in which small amounts of these materials are dissolved. Unless some deoxidizer is added to the steel at this time, the reaction between carbon and ferrous oxide will continue with such force that it is impossible to form sound steal in the ingot molds. Instead, the product will exhibit a marked porosity due to the formation and trapping of carbon monoxide-the product of the reaction mentioned. However, if deoxidizers are added, steel may be obtained which is dense and free from gas bubbles. At the same time the deoxidation products will remain in the steal as impurities. For example, silicon additions form Si02 or combinations of Si02 and FeO. Additions of manganese form deoxidation products consisting of various proportions of MnO and FeO. It is also quite obvious that simultaneous additions of manganese and silicon will form oxide combinations either in the binary system MnO-SiO2 or in the ternary system FeO-MnO-SiO2. Work at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the Metallurgical Advisory Board, involved the study of such deoxidizing reactions and their products. In this connection considerable information is necessary concerning FeO, MeO, Si02, and Al 203, and their various combinations. Some of the most needed data are the melting points of all of these materials. At the outset of this work ordinary methods of melting point determinations were found to be inadequate for various reasons, and the procedure finally selected involved the use of the micropyrometer with occasional corroboration by quenching methods, The reasons for this selection, together with a description of the apparatus, are given in the following pages.
