This article uses the case of the Royal Bafokeng Nation to argue that royalties and dividends from mineral resources, if managed well, can provide direct benefits to the surrounding community even while the state collects its share of mining revenues through taxation. The key to this model is the effective management of the resource income flowing into community coffers. Where some of this income may fund urgent interventions in the community, a portion of the income can also be used to establish an intergenerational wealth fund to meet the needs of future generations. As a depleting resource, minerals like gold and platinum are not a sustainable source of income, and must be replaced over time by more regenerative income streams. These strategies and dynamics are manifest in the Royal Bafokeng Nation?s status as both community and quasi-municipality, a labour hosting and a labour sending community, a mine operator and a mine owner. The Royal Bafokeng Nation also owns one of South Africa?s largest community-based investment companies, which channels revenue derived from platinum deposits into a broad investment portfolio that in turn funds an aggressive social development program for 150,000 people living in twenty-nine rural villages.

Bulk sampling programs are typically applied in coarse gold mineralised systems to verify resource/reserve grades. In recent years, there have been controversies surrounding some results of underground bulk sampling exercises compared to the predictions using diamond drill data. Just how realistic is it to predict 100 t lots from drilling that was designed to model blocks of several thousand tonnes? This study looks at the variation of relatively small units within larger planned mining units and compares some of the geostatistical techniques which purport to provide tools for such studies. Relative difficulty of application, computer timings and summaries of results will be used to illustrate the likely variation in bulk sampling units as opposed to mining units and large-scale planning units. A case study based on publicly available data from a gold project in North America is presented. A simplistic and unconditional geostatistical simulation model demonstrated that up to 50 per cent of a relatively high-grade mining block could show as uneconomic low-grade subblocks. A subsequent study will consider a similar demonstration using uniform conditioning. Erroneous impressions of early sampling results can lead to unsupported prejudgements of the final results. Bulk sampling programs require detailed planning based on ore characteristics, where protocols must fit the mineralisation type. Detailed characteristics of gold from Pliocene auriferous quartz gravels from Waimumu (Southland) have been studied using a combination of optical microscopy, energy dispersive microprobe analysis and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The gold at Waimumu is classified as either: 1. detrital gold, or 2. irregular gold. A number of different morphologies a recognisable within each 'gold type'. Evidence is given for an predominently authigenic origin for some of the gold at Waimumu.

Underground stone mines in the United States make use of the room-and-pillar method of mining. A prerequisite for a safe working environment is that the pillars should adequately support the overburden and the pillar ribs and rooms should remain stable during mining. At present pillar dimensions are either based on experience at neighboring mines or on strength equations that were developed for metal or non-metal mines. This paper presents a pillar design methodology that was developed from a study of pillar performance in operating stone mines. Data were collected that describe the rock mass quality, pillar conditions, mining dimensions and intact rock strength. The results showed that current mining practices have resulted in generally stable pillar layouts with no recent cases of extensive pillar collapses. However, a small number of single failed or failing pillars were observed in otherwise stable layouts. Numerical analyses were used to supplement the observations and develop a pillar strength equation that describes the stable and small number of failed pillars observed. The developed strength equation can be used to design stable pillar layouts provided the factor of safety is greater than 1.8 and the width-to-height ratio of the pillars is greater than 0.8. The paper concludes with guidelines for applying the developed equation and selecting appropriate input parameters.

Este artigo apresenta uma ferramenta de simulação computacional desenvolvida com o objetivo de auxiliar a adoção de melhores práticas de controle do forno durante períodos sem produção. O sistema desenvolvido permite simular as temperaturas do revestimento refratário de um forno de tratamento térmico de tubos em função da evolução da temperatura da atmosfera interna em diferentes cenários. O simulador foi desenvolvido baseado em um modelo matemático dinâmico validado, que utiliza um sistema de equações de transferência de calor discretizadas. Realizou-se a validação desta ferramenta computacional com a utilização de dados reais de uma campanha de medição de temperaturas. A comparação dos resultados apresentou pequeno erro entre simulação e valores reais coletados. A utilização desta ferramenta auxiliou a definição de estratégias de controle do forno durante períodos improdutivos, possibilitando redução do consumo de energia e retomada da produção com garantia da qualidade do produto.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines contracted a study to estimate what effects the underground mining of thick coal seams in the western United Slates would have on the surrounding water resources. Potential coal fields in the western United States where this type of mining might occur were identified. The foreign literature was searched for studies of effects on hydrology from thick seam underground coal mining. Based on the limited information obtained from the foreign literature, estimates of the effects of this type of mining on the ground and surface water in the western states were made.

"The Bureau of Mines in Serial No. 2606,4 issued in May, 1924, gave tentative specifications for rock-dusting to prevent coal-dust explosions in mines. Subsequently, a sectional committee of the American Engineering Standards Committee was appointed to formulate recommendations for standard practice in rock-dusting coal mines. The report of this Committee which follows was approved by the American Engineering Standards Committee, December 30, 1925. The Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) Mine is one of the future underground mines of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). Located in the remote highlands of Papua, Indonesia, the GBC mine is scheduled to start production in 2017 reaching its peak production capacity of 160 000 t/d in 2023.In order to reach planned production capacity, the GBC mine will utilise an ore handling system consisting of rail haulage, crushing and conveying. The rail haulage system will utilise over 20 km of track while crushing is accomplished by way of three gyratory crushers each with a capacity of 3300 t/h. Nine conveyors operating in two parallel systems, each system over 3 km in length, will move the ore from the crushers to the stockpiles. These systems require a network of larger tunnels and mass excavations to accommodate the planned production facilities.This paper will describe the ore handling system, tunnel and mass excavation methodology as well as some of the challenges encountered with ground conditions and excavation quality during the execution of the project. A combination of lateral and vertical development methodologies and equipment, including drill jumbos, mechanised raise climbers and specialised ground support equipment, have proven successful in the development of a quality ore handling system.CITATION:Pasek, I, Firdausi, H and Chenier, T, 2016. "Abstract: Diaphragm walls are used to provide a stable and watertight confinement for the construction of tunnels, underground railway stations, deep basements and other structures requiring deep excavations. Water seepage and soil loss through the joints have occurred on several occasions, causing extensive damage. This may have been due to uncontrolled concrete flow between the joints, unexpected geologic conditions or just poor workmanship.Different ways of quality assurance are applied on construction sites. Most of them rely on recording parameters of the construction equipment and conventional concrete quality control. In the frame of the EUREKA/ZIM project DiWaQ we have looked at several ways to perform non-destructive quality control. Some methods are to be applied after excavation before concreting (phase 1); others after the wall is completed (phase 2).For phase 1 we have used two different principles for checking the shape of the excavation, especially the joint to existing panels. A mechanical device which can be adapted to the excavating equipment was developed; field tested and validated on test and construction sites. It is described in detail in another paper in the same volume. A sonar-based device with a 10 mm resolution has shown good performance in the lab, but is still under development.For phase 2 different temperature sensors have been lowered into access holes to monitor the hydration heat developed during concrete curing. The same tubes can also be used to perform electromagnetic and ultrasonic crosshole measurements across or along joints to detect flaws. Especially the ultrasonic method has shown promising results on validation specimen at the BAM test site at Horstwalde, but limitations as well. Success substantially depended on the joint type, flaw size and distance of the sensors to the joint."

"BackgroundThe paper discusses post-mining land use however, the essence of the topic is the emotional motivation behind the decisions related to mining investment and development. Therefore this is not a typical SAIMM technical paper about the science and techniques of post-mining land use. There are already numerous papers written and conferences held on this aspect of post-mine land use; the science is well understood, but the evidence of the practical application of the (environmental, social, and economic) science is sparse. At a recent conference held in November 2017 on the theme of ‘Science, Business, Society Dialogue – linking science, society, business and policy for the sustainable use of abandoned mines in the SADC region’, it was demonstrated through the delivery of several papers on the possible viable options of post-mine land use. The conference was structured in nine sessions, covering the following relevant topics:? Sessions 1 and 2: Nature and magnitude of the problem: raising awareness? Sessions 3 and 4: International experiences in remediation: case studies? Sessions 5, 6 and, 7: Technological solutions: converting liabilities into assets? Session 8: Implementing solutions: social and legal aspects? Session 9: Wrap up, lessons learned: conference resolution.Summaries of the key outcomes of the sessions are available for reference.The aim of this paper, accompanied by the video speech, is to provide a visualization of the possibilities of post-mine land use. Mining contributes approximately 7% to South Africa’s GDP - this is the lowest it has ever been and is attributable to both a diversifying economy and to poor mining and investment policy which has resulted in reduced investment in the sector. The objective of the paper is to highlight the opportunities, for succeeding and diversifying economic activity following mining and mineral extraction which can continue to sustain the livelihoods and wellbeing of communities and societies beyond mining.During mining, very few alternative and local economies develop. Dependence on mining and its value chain prevails until mining ceases. This idea is conveyed in Figures 1a and b."

As globalization continues, sustainability and social responsibility has become essential in foreign mining investment. However this global trend and the increasing acceptability toward the globalization process, viability and sustainability are not always achieved. Viability and sustainability of mineral projects is dependant on the social and political environment of the region where the mining venture is located and is based on the interaction between the mining entrepreneurs, national-local government representatives, communities, grass-roots groups and independent civil organizations. These are the organizations, which play the acting roles on the viability of mining projects and are the main source of socio-political risks for the project. Throughout the decision-making process to invest in a mineral project, socio-political risks are quantified using a set of measurable variables. Nevertheless, these risk measures should be dependent on specific industries. Two mineral projects, even in the same mining district, may have significantly different political risk profiles based on their own socio-political variables. This paper describes a methodology that takes into account local social and political variables in defining a project-specific’s political risk profile. This contrasts with more typical political risk measures that focus on the country’s overall risk profile. Mining operations must operate on a local scale necessitating the development measure that considers more local variables.

This report presents a summary of the work reported by Sanders and Kelley (1981). A task analytic approach was used to define information requirements and visual features which served as sources of information. Information requirements were prioritized and the location of visual features determined. From this analysis, visual attention locations, containing one or more important visual features, were indentified. The visual attention locations are contained in this report. A procedure was developed for assessing whether operators in existing machines could be expected to see the visual attention locations. The procedure makes use of a Human Eye Reference Measurement Instrument (HERMI) designed for this project and an outside-in photographic procedure for documenting compliance with the recommendations. A sample of continuous miners, shuttle cars & scoops were used to test the procedure. Illustrative results are presented in the report.

Since the return of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division of the Bureau of Mines to normal peacetime functions following World War II, a coordinated program of oil and gas development and production research has been in prog- ress, and the importance of the problems has been evaluated so that the Bureau can render greater service to the oil and gas industry. Among the problems associated with development and production research, those concerned with efficient utilization of the Nation's reserves of hydro- carbons contained in gas-condensate type reservoirs continue to receive major emphasis. For a number of years an important part of the Bureau's work has been the study of two pressing problems associated with production from such reservoirs; first; an investigation of fluid properties, and the second, finding a means of controlling corrosion. Studies of the characteristics of gas-condensate fluids have resulted in the publication of a number of reports, which cover a broad field. In general they deal with subjects such as the properties of a fluid from a well; development of research equipment, means of combatting corrosion, and the many aspects of gas-condensate engineering. To provide experimental data on relative liquid and gas volumes and critical pressures and temperatures, a windowed cell was constructed that permits ob- servation of the fluid phase while making the tests. Experimentation in the field on the use of inhibitors to control corro- sion of equipment in gas-condensate wells has disclosed that solutions of chromate are effective retardants of corrosion. Engineering field studies of the Carthage and New Hope gas-condensate fields are in progress, and reports on the Sheridan and Lake Creek fields have been completed. "Historically, performance at Vale’s Clarabelle Mill was measured by Mill throughput and Mill recovery. After the economic collapse in 2008, a series of reviews were performed to drive improvements in business efficiency. These identified that product quality (e.g., concentrate grade, variability in concentrate grade) had a profound impact on downstream processes and suggested that improved control of these parameters would generate the greatest value for the customer (the Copper Cliff Smelter) and the company (Vale). Consequently, a movement was initiated to transform the Mill operating philosophy to consider customer needs as paramount. Systems and strategies used to drive the transformation are described. In 2011, an unexpected furnace failure resulted in decreased capacity at the Copper Cliff Smelter. In response, a two-stage change in production strategy was developed at Clarabelle. The first stage was to modify the ore blend feeding Clarabelle so that the concentrate grade could be significantly increased with minimal impact on recovery. The second stage was a circuit modification to ensure the elevated concentrate grade could be sustained. Execution of the first stage was complete five days after the failure and the second stage was complete within 10 weeks. Steps involved in each stage are outlined and the overall benefits are presented.INTRODUCTION Clarabelle Mill is located in Copper Cliff, Ontario, Canada (approximately 350 km north of Toronto). The Mill treats copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) sulphide ores. The primary diluents are pyrrhotite (Po) and non sulphide gangue rock (Rk). The process description of the circuits at Clarabelle is documented in the paper by Taylor, Doucet, Blanchette, Barrette & Lawson (2012) in this Proceedings and will not be repeated. The Mill treats ore containing Cu, Ni and platinum group elements (PGE’s) and produces two concentrates; a Cu concentrate and a bulk Cu/ Ni Concentrate (referred to as nickel concentrate). The Cu concentrate is sold to market while the Ni concentrate is thickened at the Mill and pumped to Vale’s smelter complex in Copper Cliff Ontario for further processing. Since commissioning in 1971, Clarabelle Mill has undergone many circuit changes to suit the changing needs and wants of our customers, both internal and external. The Mill processes ores of varying quality, based on mineralogy and size and until 2009 the Mill daily performance was primarily based on throughput. The second key performance indicator (KPI) of “good” or “bad” performance was quality of the concentrate and third; Mill metal recoveries. There were other plant level KPIs such as flotation feed grind size, slurry densities and mass flows to the separation circuit, but for the most part each day was good or bad depending on how many tons were processed through the Mill."

Two Rivers Platinum Mine (TRP) is a 55:45 joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Impala Platinum, respectively. TRP is situated on the farm Dwarsrivier 372KT, in the southern sector of the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex. Dwarsrivier is underlain by rock formations of the Critical Zone (Winterveld norite-anorthosite) and the Main Zone (Winnarshoek norite- anorthosite). Two economically significant PGE-bearing layers namely the Merensky Reef and the UG2 chromitite are found within the upper Critical Zone. These are approximately 140 m vertically apart, separated by a series of barren norites and anorthosites. At Two Rivers Platinum, only the UG2 chromitite layer is currently being mined for PGEs. The UG2 sub-outcrops north/south along the Klein Dwarsrivier river valley with a very gentle dip to the west of 7º?10º. At Two Rivers the UG2 averages about 120 cm in thickness, overlain by a waste pyroxenite parting about 20 cm thick, above which is a leader seam about 20 cm in thickness. The mineable cut consists of the leader seam, the waste pyroxenite parting, the UG2 chromitite layer including 25 cm of pegmatoidal pyroxenite footwall, below the UG2 reef to a minimum of 185 cm trackless mining cut. The mining method is a mechanized bord and pillar layout, which will yield a total of 185 000 tons at full run of mine production from the underground UG2 mine.

Le minage en profondeur sous contrainte modérée à élevée présente de nombreux défis aux opérateurs et aux ingénieurs de mine notamment au niveau du contrôle de terrain et de l?environnement minier souterrain, pour assurer la sécurité des travailleurs sous terre et la continuité du cycle d?opération. Des conditions de contrainte élevée signifient une pression accrue au front de taille et sur les structures minières tels les piliers de mine et les fins de zone, un risque de rupture violente ou de coup de toit plus élevé, des zones de rupture plus grandes au pourtour des excavations, des charges accrues sur le support de terrain, etc. Le présent article fournit un aperçu du travail fait à l?intérieur du Programme de Contrôle de terrain de CANMET au cours des sept (7) dernières années, entre 1995 et 2001, pour comprendre et suivre l?évolution des niveaux de contrainte à l?intérieur des structures minières. Les propriétés déterminées en laboratoire sur des échantillons rocheux et les prévisions effectuées au moment de la conception sont comparées avec les observations effectuées en chantier à la paroi des excavations et à l?intérieur de la masse rocheuse. La plupart des cas discutés ici montrent une corrélation satisfaisante entre les observations effectuées en chantier d?une part, et les résultats d?essai obtenus en laboratoire et les calculs réalisés lors de la conception d?autre part. Ces observations peuvent donc être considérées comme des moyens relativement sûrs pour vérifier et suivre l?évolution des niveaux de contrainte présents à l?intérieur des structures minières.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo principal sintetizar e caracterizar nanopartículas de ferro de valência zero (nFVZ) para degradação de substâncias recalcitrantes, através de Processos Oxidativos Avançados. A primeira etapa consiste na sintetização nFVZ, através da reação utilizando reagentes ferrosos, com o agente redutor borohidreto de sódio, em condições controladas (pH, temperatura e velocidade de agitação do sistema). Agentes complexantes e dispersantes, como o ácido cítrico e o etilenoglicol, respectivamente, foram utilizados durante a sinterização para avaliar a variação da formação do tamanho das partículas obtidas. A caracterização foi realizada através dos ensaios de distribuição de tamanho de partículas, microscopia óptica interfacial e microscopia eletrônica de transmissão (MET). Foi observado que a concentração de ácido cítrico de 0,009 mols e o volume de 100 mL de etilenoglicol, mostraram-se como os melhores valores obtidos. Todavia o ácido se tornou um interferente na reação ao ser utilizado com o SDS. Os resultados da microscopia eletrônica de transmissão comprovam que as partículas obtidas estão na escala nanométrica.

Interest in the potential use of high-density, thickened tailings has recently increased significantly. Reasons for considering this new technology vary across projects, but commonly include the need to conserve water, perceived lower risk of catastrophic failure, potential easier closure, or even reduced overall costs. As with any new technology, there has been some tendency to overstate its potential benefits. This paper reflects on whether or not the potential benefits that have been attributed to paste and thickened tailings have been realized. Using a grading system, thirteen benefits that were ascribed to the new technology some years ago are evaluated. Data is taken from case studies, and it is suggested that the key proven benefits appear to be reduced operating costs in some cases, reduced wall-building costs, and reductions in water consumption. One key potential benefit that has not been universally achieved is a reduction in the footprint of the tailings facility. Reports in the literature highlight the sometimes confusing nature of trade-off studies. Unless full life-of-mine costs are considered, these studies can be misleading and incorrect. The need to establish a consistent basis for comparative studies is discussed.
