An important activity of the Safety Division of the Bureau of Mines , in its efforts to reduce accidents , is the safety inspection of mines . Inspections are made at the request of the operators and are not connected with the inspections by the various State departments of mines . The operating management is furnished with a confidential report of the results of the Bureau's inspections , with recommendations for elimination of the hazards found . These mine - safety inspections include a study of mining practices , conditions , and equipment and in some cases the sampling and analysis of mine air and coal dust . The Bureau of Mines has no regulatory powers , therefore the recommendations made in these reports are merely suggestions , and operators are not required to adopt them . Mine inspections are a check on safety standards , methods , and practices and are essential to any accident -prevention program . A foreman or superintendent may be sincere in his efforts to operate a mine safely and believe that he has done everything possible to attain this end . However , experience has shown that because of his familiarity with the mine and the consequent " nearness " of its various features many unsafe conditions may be , and in most cases are , overlooked ; an inspector , particularly an outsider who is trained to look for hazards , can point out the unsafe conditions overlooked by the foreman or superintendent . Some companies employ safety engineers who make regular inspections of their mines , report substandard conditions and hazards found , and make recommendations for correcting them . Unless these recommendations are carried out the inspections have little value . In making recommendations , due consideration should be given to the feasibility of carrying them out ; the management may and very often does consider a recommendation impracticable because of the

Oceana Gold (New Zealand) Limited operates the Macraes Gold Mine near Dunedin on the South Island of New Zealand. The orebody is mineralogically complex and comparatively low grade requiring a series of unit processes and resulting in a relatively complex plant. As part of Oceana GoldÆs ongoing Business Improvement program, a concerted effort has been made to focus on operational efficiency. One aspect of this has been the efficient use of energy in the gold recovery process. A benchmarking process has been developed for the Macraes operation that includes comparison with other operating mines and theoretical design. Criteria for determining operational efficiency have been developed. While benchmarking is, in theory, a simple process, this paper looks at putting benchmarking into practice by catering for variability in ore and associate processing methods. The unit processes discussed include the comminution circuit, flotation plant, pressure oxidation plant and gold recovery circuits.

A field method combining solvent extraction and paper partition chromatography permits a simple and rapid semiquantitative estimation of gold in siliceous, argillaceous and sulphide ores. The method will facilitate the eyaluation of prospect samples in which the gold is too fine for separation by panning.Ethyl alcohol-hydrobromic acid mixtures are suitable for chromatographic development of the gold complex, and give clear reproducible definition of the gold zone. Substitution of commercial "methylated spirits" for the ethyl alcohol gives equally good definition, improving the potential of the method for field use.A batch of six samples in the range of 0·5 to 5·0 dwt/ton can be completed in two hours. The range may be extended by simple modification to higher or lower values.INTRODUCTIONIn a chromatographic method described previously (Lever 1958, Nevill and Lever 1959), gold from a standard volume of ore clamped between -plate glass was extracted by aqua regia on to the paper. After cautious drying the chromatogram was developed by an ethyl acetate-nitric acid-water mixture and gold was identified by spraying with stannous chloride solution. Sensitivity of the method in the low range was poor. The brown line obtained in the 1-3 dw/j ton range, caused by movement of gold in the reduced form, was not considered to be a satisfactory confirmation of the presence of gold. It was felt that the method would be improved by using a more elegant extraction and applying developing conditions which would produce a well defined purple line at all gold values. Although during the past 10 years Alabama has attained an enviable position by its coal-mine accident experience and, like most of the other coal-mining States, has made progress in the safer operation of coal mines, there is still room for improvement, which can be realized only by still greater efforts on the part of employees and employers. From 1993, when accidents were first recorded by the Alabama State Mine Inspection Department, to 1934, inclusive, 3,451 men lost their lives in the production of 569,722,676 tons of coal. The primary purpose of this report is to bring to the attention of the mining industry in Alabama end elsewhere statistics of fatal accidents for 1931-34, with the hope that a study of the causes may lead to reduction of similar accidents in the future.

With several “green” applications on the horizon, bismuth has become an even more important minor metal in the smelting and refining of lead. Smelters with a complex sulphide feed invariably deal with bismuth. Its behavior during the smelting of lead in conventional sinter-blast furnace operation is discussed. Because it readily deports to the lead phase during the refining of lead, its separation from refined lead remained unsatisfactory in early lead production. When commercial requirements of bismuth in lead became more stringent early this century, the procedure where by calcium and magnesium is used todebismuthise lead was developed. The present conduct of this 1936 process, the Kroll-Betterton process, is discussed with emphasis on operational improvements.

The Bureau of Mines designed and constructed a series of calibration models for geophysical borehole logging. A nominal hole diameter of 3 inches was selected as representative of typical core holes drilled for mining and engineering purposes, although additional hole diameters of 2, 5, and 8 inches are provided in one of the models for determination of empirical correction factors for variations in hole diameter. The physical properties of the models were determined by laboratory analyses of drill core samples and evaluated statistically for reliability. This report outlines the location of the models, elements of design and construction, and results of the laboratory tests. The models are available at the Denver Federal Center, Denver, Colo., for use by Government agencies and private industry to calibrate logging equipment for measurements of density, sonic velocity, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity.

Ferritas são compostos cerâmicos que apresentam propriedades magnéticas, sendo estas dependentes da sua estrutura cristalina. Dentre as ferritas, a do tipo Ni-Zn é uma das mais promissoras, em virtude da microestrutura e das propriedades magnéticas deste material. Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a microestrutura e propriedades magnéticas da ferrita Ni-Zn dopada com íons (TR) Sm3+. A ferrita Ni-Zn-Sm foi obtida pelo método dos precursores poliméricos, a partir da dissolução do ácido cítrico, nitrato de ferro, nitrato de níquel, nitrato de zinco, nitrato de samário e etilenoglicol. A resina obtida foi pirolisada a 350°C/2h com taxa de aquecimento de 10°C/min. e calcinada a 650°C/3h com taxa de aquecimento de 10°C/min. O material resultante foi caracterizado por difração de raios-X (DRX), microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e magnetometria de amostra vibrante (VSM). Os resultados mostraram a formação de fase única da ferrita Ni-Zn-Sm, com partículas aglomeradas e características magnéticas de material macio "soft", com baixa coercividade (0,189 kOe) e magnetização de saturação (47,699 emu/g).

Indonesia is a fast growing democratic developing country comprising more than 17,000 islands, founding member of ASEAN and a member of the G-20 major economies. It is one of the most highly mineralised countries in the world, the mining sector playing a pivotal role in the country's economy. In 2001, the Decentralization Law No. 22/1999 came into force and caused a transfer of authority and responsibility from central to regional and local administrative governments. The new Mining Law of 2009 substituted its 40 year old predecessor, but lacked detailed regulations for its implementation. These were only issued in 2010, which lead to a period of great uncertainty for investors in the mining industry. The new legislation intends to foster domestic economic development, which may be interpreted as protectionist policy. For the development of a sustainable mineral resources policy, further endeavours will have to be made.

Physicochemical properties of copper electrolytes are a strong fundamental consideration in electrodeposition processes during electro-purification and recovery of copper. Their influence extends to mass transfer as well as energy consumption during the electrodeposition process. In this study, the influence of electrolyte composition on electrolyte physicochemical properties was investigated to review the existing literature data. This review of data is considered necessary as more and more electrowinning models are being developed for process prediction and optimisation and a need of such data is required for accurate prediction of physicochemical properties. The major components of importance to the formation of smooth high-quality and high-purity copper cathodes at optimum current efficiency are considered the species in solution. These include Cu ions, Fe ions (major impurity), H2SO4, and a smoothing agent additive. A 5-factor, 2- and 3-level experimental design was employed to determine the effect of copper (35 and 45 g/l), sulphuric acid (160 and 180 g/l), iron (1, 3, and 6 g/l), polyacrylamide additive (2, 5, and 10 mg/ l), and temperature (45 and 55 °C) on electrolyte density, conductivity, and the diffusion coefficient in synthetic copper electrowinning electrolytes. The major species in a copper electrowinning electrolyte are found to be the most relevant for prediction of physicochemical properties. These results indicate that relatively simple empirical models are sufficient for modelling of the electrolyte domain in electrowinning, without the need for the generation of vast amounts of complex experimental data.

Este trabalho investigou o efeito do hidrogênio nas propriedades do aço 2,25Cr-1Mo-0,25V. As amostras foram envelhecidas a 600°C por 100h e 600h. Uma parte dos corpos de prova foi deixada somente na condição envelhecida e conduzidas ao ensaio de tração. Outras partes dos corpos de prova foram carregados com hidrogênio, sob tensão elástica e sem tensão aplicada, antes de serem conduzidos ao ensaio de tração. Análises microestrutural e fractografias foram realizadas via microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Os corpos de prova envelhecidos por 600h não apresentaram significante diferença entre as tensões de escoamento e máxima, entre os corpos de prova carreagados com hidrogênio e não carregados (envelhecidos). Os corpos de prova envelhecidos por 100h e carregados com hidrogênio, no entanto, apresentaram uma queda nas tensões de escoamento e máxima quando comparadas com os corpos de prova somente envelhecidos.

A preliminary mineral-dressing study of five samples of East Texas limonitic brown iron ores was conducted as part of the Bureau of Mines program to develop and extend domestic resources of iron ore. The samples were considered to be typical of ore currently being mined and beneficiated by the Lone Star Steel Co. and Sheffield Steel Co. The objective of the research was to investigate those mineral-dressing unit operations that might recover some of the fine iron lost in current industrial wastes or perhaps improve the recoveries when applied to the ores as well. Since current industrial beneficiation practice yields a washed limonite analyzing 41 to 45 percent iron, higher grade concentrates were not sought in this laboratory study. Laboratory investigation included washing and sizing, reduction roasting, and subsequent magnetic separation of the finely ground roasted materials. The results showed that laboratory recoveries of over 80 percent of the iron were possible, for the ores investigated, at concentrate grades comparable to those expected from cur-rent industrial beneficiation practice. There is not a single aspect of our future that will go untouched by the communication and computing revolution that Is now upon us. The change we are about to witness will overshadow the impact of the printed word, industrial revolution and physical transport. The next major wave of information technology (TT) development will focus on the delivery of information and experience on demand, in the right form, at the right time, at the right price, to fixed or mobile terminals anywhere, over networks of optical fibre, radio, satellite and optical wireless. Bandwidth, distance and time will no longer be significant cost elements as service and access become dominant.

"A reliable source of water of an acceptable quality is vital to the success of any mineral processing plant using wet methods. For Cerro Verde, a new 108,000 t/d copper mill in southern Peru, the main source of raw water is the Chili River. The Chili River is heavily contaminated with raw sewage, industrial wastewater and agricultural runoff, and can also receive high sediment loads during the rainy season. The initial water treatment plant could not supply design flows of water due to the exceptionally poor water quality. Problems with treated water quality caused significant difficulties with water consuming equipment, such as the plant cooling systems. This paper details the Cerro Verde water system and changes from design through to start up from a mineral processing perspective.INTRODUCTIONMining, and mineral processing in particular, is a water intensive activity. Improving water system design and practice are key strategic requirements in moving toward a more sustainable mining industry. This case study forms a basis for ongoing research into water use and reuse at mines and mineral process plants, conducted by AJ Gunson, under the supervision of Dr. Bern Klein and Dr. Marcello Veiga at the University of British Columbia. The case study material was gathered through involvement with the design, startup, and redesign of the Cerro Verde water system.Cerro Verde is a low-grade copper porphyry mine, located near the city of Arequipa in southern Peru, at an elevation approaching 2,800 m. In 1972, one of the world’s first copper Solvent Extraction – Electrowinning (SX/EW) facilities was built on the site, processing oxide ore from two main open pits. In 2004, the operator, Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A. (SMCV), approved a 108,000 t/d expansion project to process sulfide ore reserves through a new concentrator plant. The plant was designed under extremely tight schedule and capital constraints, with a mandate to intentionally avoid any overdesign."

In a benchmarking paper published in the SAIMM Journal, Potvin and Hadjigeorgiou (2008) reviewed ground control strategies to manage large deformations in underground hard rock mines. Significant differences were identified in the design and acceptable tolerance between civil and mining engineering practice for squeezing ground conditions. Variations were also noted in ground support strategies between Australian and Canadian mines. In this paper we review progress in design methodology and ground support practice since 2008, including the availability of more effective deformation monitoring, new design tools, greater access to yielding ground support elements, and better installation practices. An improved understanding of technical and practical issues associated with squeezing conditions has led to the development of ground support guidelines for a range of squeezing ground conditions in hard rock mines.

In ,1993, the WMC Resources Ltd.-owned Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter, underwent a capacity upgrade. This capacity increase was offset by .air quality control restrictions limiting the smelter's availability to 80%. As the direct. result of this limitation, WMC Resources Ltd commissioned a double absorption contact ,acid ,plant for the desulphurisation of furnace waste gas in August 1996. The history and the impact of the acid plant on S02 emissions and air quality is reviewed. General descriptions of the other aspects of the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter's Environmental Project are also included in the paper. Information on 'the design features? and operating practices that relate to or contrast with practices at operations visited by KNS personnel prior to acid plant commissioning provide the paper's focus. Smelter operation has changed markedly from unstable operation prior to 1997 to continuous" operation with little down time due to mechanical or process failures resulting in increased smelter availability to more than 90%

As a part of a Bureau of Mines program on the conversion of coal to liquid and gaseous fuels, the kinetics of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis on iron catalysts was investigated. Nitrided catalysts were studied at 21.4 atmospheres using feed gases ranging from 2H2+1CO to 0.25H2+1CO, and at 7.8 to 21.4 atmospheres using 1H2+1CO gas. The overall apparent activation energy increased with increasing carbon monoxide content of the feed gas from 19.5 kcal/mole for 2H2+1CO to 23.7 for 0.7H2+1CO. The rate of synthesis with 1H2+1CO feed increased linearly with operating pressure from 7.8 to 21.4 atmospheres. A semifundamental rate equation of the form [r=a'PH2 0.6pco 0.4- ?r0.5PH200.5] was shown to fit the data satisfactorily. The relative usage of hydrogen to carbon monoxide decreased with increasing conversion, passed a minimum, and then increased. Apparently water is the principal primary product and carbon dioxide is produced by subsequent water-gas shift reaction. In another group of experiments water, carbon dioxide, argon, and methane were added to 1H2+1CO feed to a nitrided iron catalyst. Argon and methane were only diluents. Carbon dioxide was a slight inhibitor and water vapor was a strong inhibitor to the rate of synthesis. Water accelerated the water-gas shift and usually increased methane production. Important factors of catalyst geometry in determining rate were found to be particle size and extent of reduction. Apparently the active portion of the catalyst is confined to a layer of 0.01 to 0.02 cm from the external surface of particles. A special solution was made of differential equations relating re¬action at the catalyst surface to diffusion in pores of the catalyst for spherical particles with an active layer surrounding an inert core. The equation derived expressed the experimental data reasonably well. Diffusivities determined by this equation varied from 3 to 24X10-6 cm2/sec; these values are of the same magnitude as observed for the diffusion of gases in liquid. The appendix presents a group of synthesis experiments at pressures of 21.4 to 103 atmospheres. In this range the rate of synthesis on nitrided iron catalysts increased with pressure to the 0.74 to 0.84 power.

This paper outlines the development of the Falcon enhanced gravity separator. Design objectives included continuous operation with sharp separations, mechanical simplicity, minimization of process water demand, the ability to apply a centrifugal field up to 300G's, unit capacity in excess of 100 t/h within a footprint of 10 square meters, a capital cost below $US 4,000 per t/h capacity, and total operating costs of less than $US 0.40 per tonne. A parallel development has been inexpensive, effective, semi-continuous equipment for recovery of precious metals in the free metallic state. These objectives have been largely met. There are significant opportunities for the technology in many mineral processing applications.
