O desenvolvimento de materiais renováveis e biodegradáveis é uma vertente que almeja a diminuição dos custos e dos impactos ambientais. Nesse âmbito, o presente trabalho visa o desenvolvimento de novos materiais, fabricados com fibras vegetais e que possam substituir outros que são derivados do petróleo. Fibras vegetais foram utilizadas e devidamente modificadas por mercerização e acetilação com o intuito de produzir materiais com compatibilidade química. Foram obtidos, nesse trabalho, compósitos de polietileno reciclado reforçados com fibras de sisal[1]. Utilizamos a ferramenta estatística denominada distribuição de Weibull, para prever as falhas mecânicas dos sistemas estudados. Foi possível observarmos que o compósito resultante teve uma melhora relativa em suas propriedades mecânicas, o que pôde ser comprovado por meio dos ensaios de tração. A distribuição de Weibull foi uma ferramenta que produziu resultados de acordo com os esperados, comprovando a melhoria de propriedades mecânicas do material.

A number of chemical techniques have been applied to manganese ores from three areas of Aroostook County, Maine. Although large tonnages of these ores have been proved, they are low grade, and their exploitation has awaited a suitable beneficiation scheme. As conventional ore-dressing methods had failed to yield satisfactory results, attention was turned to chemical procedures. Leaching with dilute (7-percent) H2S04 extracted over 90 percent of the manganese from ore of the Dudley farm area, consuming 3.8 pounds of acid per pound of manganese extracted. Ores from the Littleton Ridge and Maple Mountain-Hovey Mountain areas were less amenable to this treatment, yielding approximately 80 and 60 percent of their Mn content, respectively. To increase the percentage extraction of manganese in the latter two ores, a number of factors were varied, including (1) acid concentration in the extracting solution, (2) ratio of acid to Mn in the slurry, and (3) preliminary heat treatment of the ore with a reducing agent. Other acids, including HNO3, HC1, and H2SO3, were tried also; however, no significant improvements in the Mn leached from Maple Mountain-Hovey Mountain ore were made. The manganese extraction of Littleton Ridge ore was raised to 90 percent by providing 9 to 11 pounds of HNO3 per pound of Mn in the ore.

A new strain-based criteria is being adopted for rock blasting in New York City (NYC). This criteria is based on several years of research involving vibration measurements of tall structures during blasting within several feet from buildings designated historic and Landmarked. This research has demonstrated that tall, heavy structures show little upper-structure vibratory response during hard-rock, urban blasting carried out in NYC. The Fire Department of New York City (FDNY) permits rock blasting and regulated limits for ground vibrations using the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) safe blasting criteria. However, these regulations are often superseded by a 0.5 in/s (12.7 mm/s) limit imposed by the New York City Department of Buildings for historic and Landmarked buildings that are adjacent to the majority of blasting projects in the City. The Bureau of Mines is investigating the fundamental behavior of electric arcs in electric furnace operations. The electric arc is a poorly understood phenomenon. If the arc in a steelmaking furnace can be more carefully controlled, it should be possible to increase heat transfer to the melt, reducing both electrical and acoustical noise. As a first step toward a better understanding of the are, voltage and current signals from operating furnaces were analyzed. The results of the initial analysis show that instrumentation used in monitoring and controlling furnaces, such as meters and strip-chart recorders, gives incomplete or erroneous information to the operator and therefore leads to less than optimal control. Advanced instrumentation and analysis techniques, such as the waveform analysis used in these investigations, can improve the understanding of operation and the control of electric furnaces. This report describes the instrumentation and the numerical analysis methods used and compares these methods with standard metering and recording techniques.

The pyrometallurgical industry plays a vital role in producing metals for our modern life. With growing demand of metals and declining grade of mineable ore, innovations become critical for many mining companies. It is necessary to conduct a review of recent improvements to the pyrometallurgical industry on analytical measurement techniques, process and equipment improvements, and computer-based modeling/simulations. Many of those innovations tend to be applied to wider metals, and not be restricted by a specific metal. Therefore, we tried to cover the wide applications of many improvements to wider range of metals to reflect this trend. The challenge of a lack of robust measurement techniques under high-temperature conditions within a furnace hinders optimization of a pyrometallurgical process. Some future opportunities in the pyrometallurgical industry on analytical measurement techniques, computer modeling, and processes and equipment have also been outlined and discussed.

The computer program described in this user's guide provides for the static, three-dimensional, linear and nonlinear analysis of structural and geological systems by the finite element method. The guide describes the capabilities and general features of the program and shows how input is prepared. A number of recent advances in finite element theory and computer technology are incorporated in the program. Nonlinear material properties are provided for, including isotropic, anisotropic, and time-dependent material properties, gravity loading, simulation of a sequence of excavation or construction, and a slip or joint element. The finite elements include beam, rod, axisymmetric and plane quadrilateral, hexahedron, thick shell, axisymmetric and plane joint, and a three-dimensional joint. The program also has an automatic mesh generator to minimize user input preparation for continuum finite element meshes.

This Bureau of Mines publication reviews the structural characteristics of crystalline phases and phase equilibria data for the system NaC1-KC1-AlC13-NaF-KF-AlF3, which encompasses a large number of molten salt fluxes currently used in aluminum recycling. Its purpose is to provide guidelines for research into the relationships between molten salt compositions and their physical properties, notably vapor pressures, densities, surface tensions, and viscosities, knowledge of which is essential to maximizing fluxing efficiencies and metal recovery and minimizing hazardous emissions and disposal problems. In addition, this report describes experimental determinations of sub-solidus compatibility relationships in the system, which is of the quaternary reciprocal type, containing 12 different stable 4-phase assemblages in the solid state. The compatibility diagram serves to define the important compositional planes across which important changes in properties are likely to occur.

Critical to understanding and controlling phase mixing and separation in metallurgical processes, is the development of reliable experimental techniques to measure interfacial properties of melt systems. A series of experiments has been carried out to determine the effect of oxygen potential on the surface tension of liquid copper. Using an electromagnetic levitation method, a surface tension-oxygen chemical potential adsorption isotherm was produced for the Cu-O system at T 1400 K. The surface tension results show good agreement with the literature values e.g. within 3 per cent for pure copper. The Belton `ideal' adsorption isotherm was applied, and the following equation derived to best fit the experimental data ? =1251-77.5 1n41+ (2.79x105 . pO1/2)](mN.m Using this equation, the surface tension of copper was calculated/predicted as a function of oxygen potential at 1400 K, and showed excellent agreement with the experimental values. This confirmed that the adsorption behaviour of oxygen in liquid copper is ideal. The saturation coverage of oxygen on the surface of liquid copper was determined to be T0 = 6.65 µmoles.m,-2 corresponding to an area per adsorbed oxygen atom of ao ? 25 Å2. These values agree well with those cited in the literature, and our experimental data cover a very wide range of oxygen potential (10-5 to 10-17 atm). The scope of the SA (Situational Awareness) working group is to analyze the effectiveness of information delivery systems in mining equipment and develop a unified display design, to mitigate against the proliferation of screens within equipment cabs. This working group comprises a variety of stakeholders representing a cross-section of relevant mining and mining-related organizations. This stakeholder network will help guide the direction of the working group towards a common, mutually beneficial end. For now, the focus is on shovel displays; however it should be noted that this work is expected to form the foundation for similar work with other equipment in the future.

A CBMM aplicou aços microligados ao nióbio de alta resistência mecânica para a fabricação de containers de caminhões que transportam grãos na região do Triângulo Mineiro e Alto Paranaíba, com o objetivo de reduzir o peso desses equipamentos e possibilitar o aumento da carga útil transportada. O novo projeto reduziu em 10% o peso do container e também aumentou seu volume útil de 27 m3 para 29 m3. O investimento teve retorno com apenas 8 dias de operação com o novo projeto transportando arroz. Também foram obtidos ganhos no transporte de milho e soja com o retorno do investimento em 21 e 56 dias de trabalho respectivamente. O trabalho mostra os aços utilizados e as principais alterações nos projetos desses componentes.

O atual cenário global de crescente conscientização ambiental de consumo de materiais e da busca por utilização de materiais que sejam menos agressivos aos ecossistemas. Fazem com que novos materiais oriundos de fontes naturais, de acordo com tendências e desenvolvimento tecnológico, se tornem alvo de pesquisas. Neste contexto, a utilização de fibras naturais ocupa uma posição destacada. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o comportamento de resistência de compósitos reforçados com 30% em volume de um tecido de fibra de fique e manta de curauá, com matriz de poliéster, por meio de testes de impacto Izod. Foi observado que a adição do tecido fique e da manta de curauá resultou em um aumento significativo na energia absorvida pelos compósitos, quando comparado com o material sem a adição de reforço. A observação macroscópica dos espécimes pós-impacto e a análise de fratura obtidas através de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) revelaram que a ruptura transversal através da interface dos compósitos com a matriz de poliéster é o principal mecanismo para a tenacidade destes compósitos.

Rock stress measurement is cast in the more general context of the determination of boundary conditions for rock engineering. A study on the effect of elastic anisotropy on underground excavations reveals that this effect is actually controlled by the imposed boundary conditions. Applications to tunneling and to the Underground Research Laboratory (URL), Canada, exemplify a procedure for boundary condition estimation formerly developed by the authors. The procedure displayed fast convergence despite the complex geometry, and the high degree of non-linearity of the models. In the URL application, the 3-D model was able to completely reproduce the complex measured stress pattern, and the 90° rotation of the principal in situ stresses with depth. In order to reliably estimate the boundary conditions reproducing the current in situ state of stress, response measurements of the rock mass to current disturbances are necessary as input data. La mesure des contraintes in situ tombe dans le domaine général de la détermination des conditions aux limites pour les problèmes de mécanique des roches. Une étude sur le rôle de l’anisotropie élastique sur les excavations souterraines montre que ce rôle est contrôlé par les conditions aux limites qui sont imposées. L’application aux tunnels et au Laboratoire Souterrain de Recherche (URL) au Canada, nous permet de présenter une méthode de détermination des conditions aux limites. La méthode converge rapidement bien que le géométrie soit complexe et que le problème soit non-linéaire. Pour le URL, le modèle 3D est capable de reproduire la distribution des contraintes qui ont été mesurées ainsi que la rotation de 90 degrés des contraintes in situ avec la profondeur. Afin de déterminer avec précision les conditions aux limites responsables pour la distribution actuelle des contraintes, la réponse du massif rocheux doit être connue et mesurée. In der Felsentechnik sind die Spannungsmessungen in Gestein an die Bestimmung der Randbedingungen gebunden. Eine Studie legt dar, dass der Effekt elastischer Anisotropie in unterirdischen Aushoehlungen von den Randbedingungen kontrolliert ist. Eine von den Authoren entwickelte Methode zur Bestimmung der Randbedingungen wird an Beispielen im Tunnelbau und im Underground Research Laboratory (URL) in Kanada illustriert. Auch bei komplexer Geometrie und einem hohen Grad an Nicht-Linearitaet zeigt diese Methode ein schnelles Konvergenzverhalten. Ein 3D-Model und dessen 90° Drehung der lokalen Hauptspannungen mit der Tiefe, kann bei einer URL Anwendung vollstaendig reproduziert werden. Um mit dieser Methode die Randbedingungen zuverlaessig abschaetzen zu koennen, werden der gegenwaertige lokale Spannungszustand sowie die Antwort des Gesteins und die resultierenden Stoerungen als Eingabedaten benoetigt.

O presente trabalho mostra o desenvolvimento de um produto, até então não comercializado pela CSN/PR, criado para o aproveitamento da capacidade ociosa de seu laminador reversível a frio. Historicamente, a produção do laminador era direcionada exclusivamente para o abastecimento de uma linha de galvanização contínua, mas trabalhos bem sucedidos para o aumento da produtividade do laminador resultaram em capacidade excedente do equipamento. Diante desse cenário, a comercialização de bobinas Full Hard se tornou uma opção viável para a abertura de mercado e aumento de competitividade, frente a atual pressão imposta por produtos importados. Visitas aos potenciais clientes foram necessárias para o levantamento das características importantes a seus processos produtivos e adequação dos parâmetros utilizados no laminador reversível. Atualmente o produto está homologado e sendo fornecido a clientes externos, e espera-se o aumento da carteira, dependendo apenas da evolução do mercado.

The aim of the present research work is to study the influence of hard chrome covered skin pass cold rolling rolls using 2D/3D surface topography, i.e. roughness characterization. The common stochastic structure Shot Blast Texturing (SBT) does not meet all requirements related to the production line regards to the finished product. The Hard Chrome layer, applied on these SBT rolls, can improve the sheet surface quality and is of fundamental interest mainly for those steel mills that do not have another alternative to new surface structures such as those that may be provided by the EDT, LT, EBT, etc. methods. The function of the generated surfaces, obtained by these different methods is going to influence the tribological properties during the subsequent forming processes. On the other hand, they can increase the product final cost or require large investments to obtain such surfaces. The results here presented are in accordance with other recently published research work, showing that there is a relationship between these parameters, and that further detailed studies are needed.

Educational campaigns conducted by the manufacturers of explosives, the Bureau of Mines, mining companies, and safety organizations have contributed greatly in reducing accidents caused by explosives arid blasting. Despite these campaigns and the dissemination of information, accidents from explosives and blasting continue to be the direct cause of scores of fatalities and hundreds of nonfatal accidents annually, not only in the mineral industry but essentially wherever explosives are used. The experience of many mining companies and other users of explosives has proved that accidents from explosives can be prevented or averted by the proper training of employees in the handling and using of explosives and by the enforcement of definite rules and instructions for their use. Unfortunately, throughout the years numerous false impressions and ideas have grown up and around the use of explosives. Many of these can be traced back to the manner in which the users of explosives were originally taught, if instructed at all; and as with many types of misinformation in nearly all walks of life, those false ideas are decidedly persistent and being so cause much damage. Many if not most of the users of explosives gained their knowledge of explosives and blasting by watching others and more or less "absorbing" the procedures and thrones of the other fellow, who acted unconsciously as teacher or instructor. A study of explosives accidents reveals the results of such "teachings" when the causes of the accidents are determined, and as might be expected the results very often are far from good. Neste trabalho avaliou-se o efeito de diferentes ciclos térmicos na microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas de um aço Dual Phase revestido por imersão a quente, da classe de resistência de 800 MPa, a partir de simulações em escala piloto no equipamento HDPS (Hot Dip Process Simulator), ensaios dilatométricos, tração à temperatura ambiente e flangeamento. Nas simulações de recozimento contínuo foram experimentadas duas temperaturas de encharque no recozimento intercrítico (740°C e 780°C) e três temperaturas de patamar isotérmico no resfriamento rápido (610°C, 560°C e 510°C). A caracterização microestrutural evidenciou que a temperatura de encharque de 740°C não foi suficiente para dissolução completa dos carbonetos formados na laminação a quente, resultando em frações reduzidas de segundo constituinte. Com isso, o limite de resistência mínimo de 800 MPa não foi alcançado. Além disso, os resultados de ductilidade e flangeamento se mostraram aquém dos obtidos nas simulações com encharque a 780°C. Nas simulações com temperatura de encharque a 780°C e isotérmicas de 510°C e 560°C no resfriamento rápido foi atendido o limite de resistência mínimo, com capacidade de expansão de furo ligeiramente superior à obtida nas simulações com encharque a 740°C.

NEED for some simple method of determining tonnages in mill circuits has always been felt by operators and consultants alike. To meet this demand the following method was evolved and has been found accurate and practical after considerable testing on various mill flows. The essence of the method is to add a chemical at a uniform rate to a mill flow, such as a launder conveying pulp, and then determine the concentration of the added chemical in a sample of the pulp. From this procedure the tonnage can be calculated. Common table salt has proved the most satisfactory chemical for ordinary conditions. Devido à complexidade dos minérios itabiríticos, sua caracterização é necessária, com ênfase em microestrutura. Muito usado é o microscópio eletrônico de varredura (MEV), com microanalisador químico por dispersão de energia (EDS). Métodos computadorizados/automatizados de análise mineralógica e microestrutural, incluindo a liberação dos minerais, têm sido propostos, usando MEV-EDS. Um desses sistemas analíticos é o MLA (Mineral Liberation Analyser), que usa análise de imagens de elétrons retroespalhados (BSE) e espectros de raios-X (EDS) na identificação dos minerais, em secções polidas de partículas de minérios. Assim, geram-se mapas de composição microestrutural, com informações importantíssimas como liberação, associações minerais e análises modais. Há grande significado estatístico, pois vários milhares de partículas podem ser analisadas. Estudaram-se 4 amostras de minérios de ferro do Quadrilátero Ferrífero, MG, com graus diferentes de complexidade microestrutural. As faixas granulométricas (-0,500+0,300 mm e -0,300+0,212 mm) foram estudadas por difração de raios-X, espectrometria Mössbauer e MLA. Pelos métodos instrumentais, os minerais abundantes foram quartzo e hematita, obviamente; também foram identificados goethita, gibbsita e magnetita, minoritários; em geral, os dados do MLA foram consistentes com esses. O quartzo se encontra liberado em 3 amostras, acima de 90%; a exceção é a amostra APV4 com liberação de 60%, onde o quartzo está associado a hematita (principalmente) e goethita.

This paper presents the results from the investigation of the application of thermal fragmentation in Australian hard rock underground narrow-vein mining. Two geologically similar samples from an underground narrow-vein hard rock gold mine were collected to obtain a measure of the technology’s ability to recover ore by the creation of large thermal openings to assess the applicability of the thermal method. Particle size distribution showed a higher generation of fine product, − 2 mm, by thermal fragmentation compared with selective blasting by 31%. The Bond work index for thermal ore (12.62 kWh/t) is half to that of the blasted ore value (25.32 kWh/t). The average grindability obtained for the thermal ore sample was greater than the blasted sample by a factor of 2.44, a higher value indicating a decrease in the energy required to grind. The thermal fragmentation method generates product with higher dissolution of gold in cyanide, by 14% for the − 9.5 + 2 mm size fraction samples. Additionally, the thermal fragmentation results in higher production of − 9.5 + 2 mm material by 15 % compared with selective blasting.
