Hematite floatability from two low grade banded iron ores of India, namely banded hematite quartzite (BHQ) and banded hematite jasper (BHJ) using fatty acids and amine as the collectors is investigated under identical physico-chemical conditions. The results indicated that hematite present in BHQ ore is easy to float using both the collectors, compared to BHJ ore. The difference of flotability between the two banded iron ores is that quartz grains are coarser and well liberated below 100 micron size in case of BHQ compared to BHJ ore. In case of BHJ ore, fine hematite and quartz grains are intimately inter-grown and are dispersed in thick jasper bands leading to liberation problems. Besides that, dusty jasper particles coat over hematite surface in case of BHJ ore during the process of grinding, which hinders specific adsorption of collector on hematite or quartz surfaces. This is substantiated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The flotation studies have indicated that it is possible to achieve ~64% Fe with ~67% recovery from a BHQ ore using both anionic and cationic collectors from a feed containing around 38% Fe. In contrast, the hematite recovery in BHJ ore was poor. Differences in the ore characteristics that affect the flotability of hematite present in both the ores are compared. "Laboratory study of the behaviour• of binary coal blends shows that coke strength is more closely dependent on the distribution of ""reactive"" oxygen in the parent coals than on their proximate, elemental or petrographic compositions, and it also appears possible to qualitatively predict coke strength from information about reactive oxygen. Proceeding from this recognition, experiments were carried out to test the possibility of preparing metallurgical cokes from binary blends in which non-caking hvb coal was substantially freed of reactive oxygen by prior heat t1•eatment under controlled conditions. The results indicate that such blends can yield surprisingly strong cokes and that coke strength may be amenable to further improvements by modifying the size distribution of the pre-heated component and the rate at which it is charred."

A study of drilling data at various stages of development of an orebody show that the semi-variogram, used for calculating the accuracy of block estimates can be ill-defined if too few data are available. The consequencesin this case are to have blocks supposedly more accurately known than is possible at the early drilling stage; such a result being potentially dangerous. However, as the amount of data increases the recalculated, semi-variograms approach the underlying semi-variogram of the deposit and the calculations made using them become more reliable and robust.

The Search Minerals Foxtrot project in Labrador represents a significant Canadian resource of rare earth elements rich in the sought after heavy rare earth elements (19.8% HREE/TREE). A preliminary economic assessment of the project indicated that the project is technically feasible and economically attractive. A variety of metallurgical test programs have been undertaken which have led to significant streamlining and simplification of the process flowsheet. The improved flowsheet should allow Search to reach production earlier and will use conventional processing equipment. The results of these test programs are presented and discussed in this paper.

Bureau of Mines engineers engaged in studying stimulative methods of recovering oil have been making a series of tests on the effectiveness' of methods that may be applied in water flooding oil-bearing sandstones. The report gives the test procedures and results of a study of the rates and pressures used for injecting water into several sandstone formations in the Mid-Continent fields for the purpose of learning more about the mechanics and efficiency of the flooding process and to provide useful information for operators of water floods in this area.

THERE are three active mines in the Chewelah-Colville district, the United Silver Copper near Chewelah, and the Old Dominion and the Chloride Queen near Colville. The Admiral near Valley is also doing development work. The Chewelah district is in the south central part of Stevens County in the Colville Valley. Chewelah, a thriving town of 1600 people, and the scene of operations of the Northwest Magnesite Co., is about the center of the district. It is situated in a farming community on the Spokane-Nelson branch of the Great Northern railway, about 65 miles north of Spokane. Only two or three of the mines in the district have been extensively developed, although many have been prospected. The general elevation of the valley, is about 1600 or 1700 ft., that of the mountain ranges on each side about 3000 to 4000 ft., with gentle slopes and rounded glaciated tops. Prospecting is often difficult because of much glacial debris.

"There are a number of important dates that must be disclosed when a Qualified Person (QP) is preparing a technical report for securities purposes. The dates are discussed in NI43-101 and the Form of the Technical Report, NI43-101F1. •,Effective date of the technical report •,Possible revision date of the report •,Effective date of mineral resources and mineral reserves •,Date of the personal inspection (site visit) •,Signature date of the date report (execution date) •,Date of the certificate of the QP •,Date of the consent of the QP The effective date of the report is basically the cut-off date for the information that is included in the technical report. The effective date should be close to the signature date. If there is too long a period between these dates, the QP runs the risk of new material information becoming available and then the technical report would no longer be current. The effective date is disclosed on the title page of the report and on the signature page. If a technical report needs to be revised to correct problems or disclosure deficiencies identified by the regulators, the QP will normally need to include a revision date on the title page of the report to distinguish the revised version from the original version. In these circumstances, the regulators will request that the original date of the report remain on the title page and the revised date will be below it. When a technical report must be revised, the QP must resign and date the signature page of the report and provide a new certificate and consent."

Models of ground surface elevation, slope, aspect, curvature, roughness, deformation, as well as other features are gathered together in the term Digital Terrain Model (DTM). DTMs can be generated from a wide range of technologies such as ground surveying, aerial and satellite imagery, including both active and passive sensors. Some elevation derived parameters, such as roughness and slope, can be measured directly using innovative active sensor technology and smart processing, rather than via traditional processing of elevation information. Such models are used as part of a visual interpretation process, and increasingly for computer-assisted analysis using visualisation technology. There is an ever-increasing demand for DTM information to be used in the mineral exploration and mining industry, and consistent pressure from industry to develop models of higher spatial resolution, higher accuracy, and better overall reliability, regardless of the world-wide location of interest. This presentation will survey the range of techniques available for DTM generation, including active (LIDAR, SAR interferometry and differential interferometry) and passive (optical or SAR stereo) methods, as well as interpolation methods (contour or structure interpolation), and the economic placement of these various techniques in the local and regional context. The research issue oftrue-ground elevation models and slopes is also addressed, using LIDAR and SAR polarimetry as signpost technologies. Particular emphasis will be given to the strengths and limitations of new data sources that will, over the next few years, make the acquisition of elevation models of remote regions of the world inexpensive and relatively accurate.

Longwall mining has existed in Utah for more than half a century. Much of this mining occurred at depths of cover that significantly exceed those encountered by most other U.S. longwall operations. Deep cover causes high ground stress, which can combine with geology to create a coal burst hazard. Nearly every longwall mine operating within the Utah’s Book Cliffs coalfield has been affected by coal bursts.

Mineral ownership determination is not always straight forward as in many cases the relevant details are not recorded on the latest Land Transfer title held in the local Land Registry Office. To determine mineral ownership can be difficult, time consuming and expensive especially in a confused sector. Non statute minerals can be owned by the Crown, Land Owner or other persons. Statute minerals (Gold, Silver, Petroleum, Uranium) are always owned by the Crown and thus present no problems. In simple terms the only accurate and reliable method of determining the mineral ownership under subject land is to historically search back to the first registration when the land and minerals were definitely intact. Then carefully ascertain from the evidence gathered along the way to the present day whether any legislation or private agreement altered or affected the status quo.

This bulletin deals with a topic that is exceedingly wide, and will doubtl~ be under consideration and discussion so long as there are enough known deposits of oil and gas remaining in the earth to make their revelopment profitable. The Bureau of Mines has repeatedly called attention to the importance of protecting oil or gas sands from the encroachment of water, and the purpose of this paper is to summarize existing knowledge of methods and devices. Water may gain access to an oil-bearing formation from several sources-from water sands above or below those. containing the oil, or by encroaching through the oil sands as the oil is withdrawn. In short, it may enter a well from the "top, bottom, or side." Such ingress of water is a most serious detriment to the recovery of oil from the ground. As the art of drilling and developing oil properties has progressed, increasing thought, labor, and money have been expended on various methods, devices, and equipment for arresting the migration of water from its normal subsurface position into the porous strata containing valuable oil or gas accumulations. At an early stage in the oil-field development of California, it became evident that considerable modification of accepted drilling practices was necessary in order to meet the conditions imposed by the poorly consolidated shale, clay, sand, and bowlder beds penetrated, as well as the hard layers of sandstone and calcareous shale, which vary greatly in thickness, hardness, and frequency. These hard streaks are commonly called " shell," and are so reported in the well logs. As deeper and deeper territory was prospected, drillers from the older fields of the Ea,st, as well as from Texas and Louisiana fields, took part in the operations. Xhe practice evolved was thus based on the wide experience of a most cosmopolitan group of men who, considered as a group, were not hampered by being limited to the knowledge of the practice at any one locality.

The project to rebuild the smelting furnaces at the Anglo American - Barro Alto ferronickel smelter, located in Goias, Brasil, was initiated in September 2013. To optimize the capital cost, while maximizing furnace integrity and robustness, a design basis giving flexibility to ore composition variation was developed in order to ensure sustained nameplate production. The resulting capital efficient, fasttracked project execution was accomplished through the creation of an integrated project team of Anglo American and Hatch through FEL 3 and FEL 4 phases of the project. The integrated team addressed the project challenges through a cooperative and versatile approach, created by access to knowledge, experience and systems in both Anglo American and Hatch. The team could operate at an optimized speed of execution, as demonstrated in the FEL 3 and FEL 4 completion durations, as well as efficiently mitigating any risks of increasing cost or delaying schedule by utilizing lessons learned and team knowledge from Anglo American on the original green-field project and Platinum smelters and Hatch on similar reference ferronickel furnace rebuilds. Other critical drivers of project cost minimization and revenue loss/generation (considering production revenue of each furnace) are scheduled durations for construction, commissioning and ramp-up. The integrated team commenced construction, commission and ramp-up planning almost one year in advance of the shutdown and this paper will discuss the strategies developed to reduce risks and optimize the construction schedule to mitigate revenue loss and optimize ramp-up time to sustained operation at nameplate capacity.

Recent updates to Australian industry guidelines emphasise the importance of the assessment of liquefaction potential of tailings. This includes assessment of the cyclic liquefaction potential, and the post-seismic strength of tailings expected to undergo strength loss from seismic loading. Despite this increase in focus, a relatively small number of Australian tailings appear to have been characterised through cyclic and post-cyclic testing. This paper presents the cyclic characterisation of four Australian tailings, consisting of iron ore, lateritic nickel, vanadium and bauxite residue. Material was obtained either from surficial tube sampling or through remoulding samples in the laboratory from slurries. Testing consisted of monotonic, cyclic and post-cyclic tests for each material. For three of the materials, laboratory-scale shear vane testing was also performed to provide a comparison to post-cyclic strengths from direct simple shear.The results indicated cyclic resistances consistent with the results of other tailings presented in the literature. The lateritic nickel tailings provided the greatest cyclic resistance of the four materials tested, followed by the vanadium tailings. This was somewhat consistent with expectations for material behaviour based on index properties. Post-cyclic strengths were seen to decrease as cyclic strains increased, consistent with typical observations in the literature. Following significant cyclic straining, in some instances the post-cyclic strengths approached those obtained through residual shear vane testing. This provides further insight into the strain-dependent nature of post-cyclic strengths for some materials. Para produzir os aços bifásicos galvanizados com revestimento de Zn-Fe as tecnologias de galvanização foram adaptadas visando à produção de aços com alta resistência, resistentes à corrosão e boa conformabilidade. Desta forma, e considerando as deformações obtidas na estampagem tornou importante a caracterização em laboratório da influência do nível e do caminho de deformação na geração de trincas do revestimento com Zn-Fe aplicado a um aço bifásico. O presente trabalho avaliou o efeito dos caminhos de Deformação Uniaxial, Deformação Plana e Estiramento Biaxial Simétrico na evolução das trincas do revestimento Zinco-Ferro (Galvannealed-GA) e sua conectividade considerando o aço base Dual Phase 600. Foi observado que aumento da área composta por trincas ocorre com o aumento do nível de deformação para todos os caminhos avaliados. O Estiramento Biaxial Simétrico foi o caminho de deformação que mais influenciou no aumento da área com trincas na superfície do revestimento e na conexão destas trincas com o aço base. Isso ocorreu em função do estado de tensão (tração-tração) imposta à superfície e à seção dos revestimentos. Mesmo sendo observada a conectividade das trincas com o aço base não foi verificado visualmente defeitos de desplacamento do revestimento tais como Powdering e Flaking.

En este sentido, el texto señala el uso de SDT(software) como aplicación informática decuada para el cálculo de sostenimiento en túneles y galerías mineras que suministra una respuesta a las necesidades de proyectistas e ingenieros mineros. Dicho software se basa en cerchas metálicas con capacidad de deslizamiento (perfiles THN), cerchas de perfil HEB, pernos de anclaje y hormigón proyectado en túneles y galerías mineras que utiliza el método “Convergencia – Confinamiento”, procedimiento de referencia en el cálculo y diseño de sostenimiento en excavaciones subterráneas, con las premisas de sección circular, presión sobre el sostenimiento uniforme y el campo de presiones hidrostático.

Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas, accounting for 15 percent of all global greenhouse gas emissions in 2005. Since methane has a much shorter atmospheric lifetime than carbon dioxide (CO2), reducing methane emissions can achieve considerable climate benefits over the next 25 years. Coal seams often contain significant quantities of methane and CH4 released to the atmosphere from gassy mines during coal extraction is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Methane (CH4) emissions from coal mining activities constitute approximately 6% of total global human-related methane emissions. Coal mines around the world have recognized that methane is a clean energy resource that can be captured and used productively. Coal mine methane (CMM) is currently utilized for power generation, natural gas pipeline injection, vehicle fuel, industrial process feed stocks, on-site mine boilers, mine heating, and home heating distribution systems. Upgrading mine degasification systems can often improve gas quality and create favorable project economics. The United States has been a leader in coal mine methane (CMM) recovery and use since the 1990?s. There are now 15 projects at active underground mines in the U.S., as well as 26 abandoned mine methane projects. Recovery and use projects at active underground U.S. mines reduced methane emissions by approximately 49 Billion cubic feet in 2010. In an exciting new development, a ventilation air methane (VAM) mitigation project at the CONSOL McElroy mine in West Virginia was installed by Verdeo. Operational since September 2012, this is the first commercial-scale VAM project in the U.S. and the project will reduce methane emissions by an estimated 920 MMCF/yr. As part of the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program, actual data on methane emissions from underground coal mines was collected for the first time in 2011 and reported to U.S. EPA in September 2012. The data collected will help inform stakeholders, particularly the underground coal mining industry, of CMM emission sources on public and private lands. The detailed data will also shed light on the specific sources of methane from active underground coal mines and highlight project opportunities for the U.S. coal industry. The paper will cover U.S. coal mine methane emissions, U.S. CMM utilization and destruction projects, Federal policies and State incentives for CMM capture and utilization. 2011 CMM data from the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program Subpart FF will be analyzed and compared with previous U.S. Greenhouse Gas Inventory estimates. Other developments, including the voluntary carbon market, will be discussed.

"Sulfur is one of the most harmful elements in stainless steel (SIS) products and the specification of sulfur content is getting more severe for high grade SIS. In order to accurately control the desulfurization reaction in high chromium containing SIS melts, it is important to know the thermodynamic interaction between chromium and sulfur in Fe-Cr melts over a wide range of chromium content. In this study, the equilibrium sulfur distribution, Ls, between a Ca0-Alz03 slag and Fe-Cr-C,.,-S melts were measured under CO atmosphere in the temperature range of 1823-1923 K. The specific effect of chromium on the activity coefficient of sulfur in the melts was determined with the consideration of carbon effect on sulfur. A separate experiment was carried to determine. Ls between a slag and FeCr- S melts (Cr: 0-30 mass%) at 1873K to check the validity of the thermodynamic parameter determined in the present study.IntroductionFerritic stainless steels containing chromium (Cr) up to 30 mass% have been developed for a good corrosion resistance and a high formability to replace austenitic SIS. Especially, Sulfur (S) causes a reduction of high-temperature strength and the hydrogen induced cracking (HlC) in stainless steel for line pipes. [l]Many studies on the desulfurization of hot metal and liquid steel have been carried out for several decades and they used HzS-H2 gas equilibrium technique for measuring the effects of many alloying elements on the activity coefficient of S in liquid iron. However, the study on desulfurization of Fe-Cr melts was very scarce.[2] In order to accurately control the desulfurization reaction of high Cr stainless steel, it is essential to know the thermodynamic relation between Cr and S in Fe-Cr melt over a wide range of Cr content and temperature.In the present study, the thermodynamic interaction between Cr and S in liquid iron was determined by measuring the equilibrium distribution ratios of S between Fe-Cr-C,.1-S melts containing a wide range of Cr up to 30 mass% and a 55 mass%Ca0-45 mass%Alz03 slag of which the sulfide capacity was pre-determined using Fe-C,a1-S melts in the temperature range of 1823-1923 K. The validity of thermodynamic parameter determined in the present study was checked by measuring the S distribution between a Ca0-Alz03-Mg0 slag of known sulfide capacity and liquid Fe-Cr-S alloy at 1873 K. Using Wagner's formalism, the results of experiment were thermodynamically considered to determine the effect of a specific concentration of Cr on the activity coefficient of S in liquid iron."

A prototype Fire Safety Evaluation System has been developed and is ready to be evaluated by a Peer Consulting Panel and for performing field tests. The system can be used to determine combinations of widely accepted fire safety equipment and under-ground coal mine features that provide a level of safety equivalent to those required by the Code of Federal Regulations-Title 30 for underground coal mines. In this evaluation, equivalent safety performance is gauged in terms of overall level of safety provided rather than by a component by component comparison.
