"The flotation behavior of O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (IPETC) and pH for chalcopyrite and galena was studied through pure mineral test, adsorption quantity determination, solution chemistry calculation and Materials Studio simulation. The results show that the recovery differential value of chalcopyrite and galena is about 20% when pH of the pulp 9.5 and IPETC is 7×10-4 mol/L, the flotability differences of the two minerals is significant. There is competitive adsorption between OH? and IPETC on mineral surfaces, it lead to galena flotability is lower than chalcopyrite flotability. IPETC can remove the hydration layer on mineral surface and adsorb on active sites for collector adsorption, minerals have a better hydrophobicity.INTRODUCTIONCopper and lead are two of the most widely used metals in industrial and living, their applications include building construction, various metal alloys, heat and electricity, machine manufacturing (Zhang et al., 2014). Chalcopyrite and galena are the major source of copper and lead, normally they associated with each other. With the growing use of these resources, high grade and dissemination large particle sizes minerals are less and less, the use of low grade and complex dissemination minerals have to be paid more attention (Chen, Ye, & Li, 2010; Liu, Sun, Hu, & Wang, 2009). As the special properties and complex composition of copper-lead sulfide ore, flotation separation of chalcopyrite from galena effective is a research emphasis and difficulty point in mineral processing (Bruckard, Sparrow, & Woodcock, 2011).In the separation process of chalcopyrite and galena, it is rather important to choose effective collector (Huang, Wang, & Liu, 2014). Enlarging and using the two mineral flotability will be a good basis and start in flotation (Reyes-Bozo et al., 2014). Qin et al. (2013) made a great deal of research on flotation separation of copper/lead concentrate, collector O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (IPETC), butyl xanthate (BX) and ammonium dibutyl dithiophosphate (ADTP) were investigated, BX and ADTP floated both chalcopyrite and galena well, specific adsorption appeared in the surface of mineral, the problem was the collectors were not selective enough, however IPETC showed better selective."

A flowsheet was developed for upgrading Climax tin concentrate to about 45 percent Sn. Bench-scale test work conducted at AMAX Extractive Research and Development, Inc., was used to design a multiple-stage tin- processing flowsheet which included screening, high-intensity magnetic separation, and high- tension (electric- static) separation. Formal engineering and plant installation was accomplished in-house by Climax mill personnel. The successful start-up operation of the facility was the joint effort of the AMAX R&D and Climax-mill staffs.

"The objective of any mining company is to sustainably maximize the net present value (NPV) throughout the life-of-mine (LOM). The expected NPV over the LOM is calculated based on a mine plan, yet the actual value realized by the mining company depends greatly on the level of intertemporal execution against the mine plan. Consequently, a major key performance indicator (KPI) that is often overlooked in open pit mining, due to a greater focus on temporal KPIs, is the degree of spatial compliance to the mine plan. Such focus sometimes leads to short-term actions being detrimental to long-term plans. In this paper we describe the development and implementation of a spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation approach for an open pit mine. Application to a case study open pit iron ore mine in South Africa indicated a significant improvement in the spatial mine-to-plan compliance, from 69% to 94% over a three-year period from 2014 to 2016. These results indicate that implementation of the proposed spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation approach can contribute positively to improving the level of spatial execution and assists in improving the alignment between short-term, medium-term, and LOM plans.IntroductionThe objective of any mining company is to maximize the net present value (NPV) throughout the life of mine (LOM). The paper about to be presented deals with the relatively straightforward problem of mining two seams of coal separated by an interval. This may seem to be a simple problem but within a twenty-mile radius of Consolidation Coal Company's Burning Star # 4 Mine at least seven (7) different techniques of two-seam mining have either been tried or are now in use. This great variety of techniques should point out that there is no single simple solution; a conclusion often reached when dealing with mining problems. As a background for the techniques presently in use at the Burning Star # 4 Mine, we will briefly outline the other five (5) stripping techniques used in the area: 1. Captain Hine 6360 Range Diagram (Figure 1) 2. Leahy Mine Range Diagram (Figure 2) 3. Burning Star # 3 Mine 5860 Range Diagram (Figure 3) 4. Burning Star # 3 and # 4 Mines Dragline in Pit Range Diagram (Figure 4) 5. Captain Hine 2570/5561 Range Diagram (Figure 5) Each of these techniques was chosen because it provided the best and least expensive alternative for mining the coal under the particular restraints encountered. The Mine Engineers at our Burning Star # 4 Mine, Mr. Dennis Mahan and Mr. William Weaver, will now detail two additional mining techniques, out-lining our experience to date.

The extent to which hot metal from the blast furnace affects open-hearth practice and the quality of steel produced has been discussed widely. Open-hearth operators have attributed difficulties experienced in making satisfactory steel to characteristics of the pig iron not disclosed by ordinary analysis. The commonest criticism of the iron has been that it is "physically cold" or "dirty." Often when the blast furnaces are working irregularly the quality of the iron is questioned. A cold hearth, slipping and hanging, the use in the past of unsintered flue dust, and the use of ores difficult to smelt have been associated with the production of iron of poor quality. The difficulty of the situation is that we have no proven yardstick for quality aside from ordinary analysis. Uniformity in analysis is recognized as being important, but the difficulty of changing the open-hearth practice when the iron analysis varies widely may not always be fully appreciated. Although the problem of correlating the characteristics of steel with those of pig iron is admittedly obscure, the effort of producers of quality steel to investigate all factors that may have a bearing on the final product is justified. This report contains data on the oxides in several hundred casts of basic iron produced in a furnace during the course of normal operation on Lake ores. Incidental to the study of the oxides in the iron, it was desirable to follow closely the temperature of the iron. The effect of temperature of the iron upon the silicon and sulphur present is discussed. A general relation between the basicity of the slag and the sulphur in the metal was developed. The amount and composition of oxides in the hot metal and in the steel bath during various intervals between melt-down and tap are discussed. Heats of rimmed steel, killed steel, and semikilled steel were investigated. In the face of dwindling Merensky ore reserves in the early 1990s, Mintek developed the MF2 flotation circuit to economically recover platinum group metals from the shallow upper group-2 chromitite reef. By aligning the primary and secondary grind to the platinum group metal liberation kinetics, excessive fine chromite generation was avoided, and thus one could consistently produce high-grade concentrates (>200 g/t platinum group metals) with low chrome content (<3% Cr2O₃), well within smelter tolerances. This, coupled with upper group- 2's low-cost open-pit mining, made it particularly attractive to investors and mining houses alike. As a result, deeper lying reefs like middle group and lower group with lower platinum group metals grades and complex mineralogy, were primarily mined only for chromite using density-based separation processes (like spirals), of which the waste tailings are best classified as secondary platinum group metals resources. Today, with global platinum group metal demand rising and high grade upper ground-2 reserves rapidly diminishing, the industry must revisit these middle group and lower group tailings. Mineralogical analysis reveals several challenges: Middle group tailings feature platinum group metals locked within silicate matrices, while lower group tailings contain fine chromitite fragments, and are hosted within non-floating laurite grains, each presenting liberation and gangue issues. Smelter constraints still demand concentrates below 3% Cr₂O₃, requiring solutions that consider both platinum group metals recovery and chrome entrainment. To develop a solution, two lower group chrome spiral tailings samples were obtained from a large chrome mine: Sample A (+425 μm – 106 μm) and Sample B (−106 μm). Initial assays showed Sample B contained higher platinum group metal grades but also higher Cr₂O₃. As such, different blends of flotation feeds were evaluated using ratios of 90:10 (C1) and 80:20 (C2) of Sample A to Sample B, targeting the coarse fraction's lower chrome content while recovering valuable platinum group metals from the fines. This work proposes a practical route for mining houses to unlock additional platinum group metal value from lower group ore spiral tailings. By optimising blending ratios and reagent suites, it is possible to meet smelter chrome and platinum group metal grade thresholds, whilst still obtaining economically viable PGM recoveries.

Shallow-dipping orebodies (45°–60° dip) present significant challenges for underground longhole stoping, particularly due to limited gravity flow, drill misalignment near the footwall, increased potential for dilution from hanging wall overbreak, and deviation from drill string sagging at shallow angles. These geometrical and operational constraints often lead to unblasted ore wedges and excessive overbreak when standard practices are applied. This study develops a structured, data-driven framework to optimize longhole stoping in such conditions by integrating five key focus areas: (1) mining method selection, (2) stope and drift design, (3) drill and blast optimization, (4) equipment selection, and (5) performance evaluation. The suitability of longitudinal longhole stoping was validated for narrow vein geometries using orebody analytics and prior case studies. Geometric modeling was employed to determine optimal stope height (15–20 m) and stope width (1.5–2.5 m), with drift widths adjusted based on orebody dip to maintain drill access and minimize unbroken ore. Drill and blast design emphasized sequential blasting over multi-ring methods to improve void control, reduce wall damage, and enhance fragmentation. Specific burden and spacing guidelines (e.g., 1.8–2.3 m burden; 2.5–3.0 m spacing) were applied based on stope width and dip angle, and patterns were selected based on geometry—dice-5 for narrow stopes, and 3-hole rows for wider stopes. Drill rigs—including top hammer and ITH models from Sandvik, Epiroc, Boart Longyear and CMAC-Thyssen—were evaluated for compatibility with drift dimensions and alignment accuracy. Equipment was matched based on dip, drift width, and the ability to access the footwall at shallow angles. Sensitivity analysis quantified how changes in geometry, drilling accuracy, and blast design affect ore recovery, dilution, and operating cash flow. Results show that tailored drift and stope geometries, combined with proper blasting and rig selection, can boost ore recovery to over 95% and reduce dilution to below 5% in optimal conditions. This methodology offers a practical and economically optimized solution for shallow-dip mining scenarios.

"The Direct Nickel process is a hydrometallurgical technology being developed to treat nickel laterite ores by leaching at atmospheric pressure. The leaching process uses nitric acid in a relatively large excess, is thus non-selective, and much of the soluble iron goes into solution. The first stage of solution purification is iron hydrolysis and the Direct Nickel process utilises the colligative properties of the pregnant leach solution (PLS) to enable the removal nitric acid of varying concentrations via distillation. Once sufficient acid has been removed, the boiling point of the solution is increased allowing high temperatures (up to ~170°C) to be achieved under atmospheric pressure. The higher temperatures initiate the precipitation of the iron primarily as hematite and allow the removal of the acid generated by the hydrolysis reaction. The rejection of the iron is near complete with solution tenors typically falling from 65 g/L Fe, or more, to less than 50 mg/L Fe. The separation of clean nitric acid from the PLS at this stage allows for relatively simple acid recycling. A hematite product with iron content above 60% could also provide an extra revenue stream.INTRODUCTION The Direct Nickel (DNi) Process is a novel hydrometallurgical processing route designed to treat all types of nickel laterite ores in a single flow sheet using nitric acid under atmospheric conditions. A simplified flow sheet is shown in Figure 1.Between 2007 and 2012 the process was developed and refined at Direct Nickel’s laboratory within the CSIRO Minerals’ facilities in Perth, Australia, and in 2013 a series of pilot plant trials were run under continuous operating conditions. The process is designed to treat both limonite and saprolite in the same flow sheet, and after comminution, the blended ore is mixed with nitric acid and leached just below boiling point in agitated atmospheric leach tanks. The acid is added in excess, so typically for a blend of limonite and saprolite the acid addition can be in the order of 1.8-2.0 t acid/t dry ore. After a residence time of between 4-6 hours the majority of the soluble metals have leached into solution and the insoluble leach residue is separated from the pregnant leach solution (PLS) via counter-current decantation."

Sulfur pressure measurements above FeS in equilibrium with iron have been carried out by the Knudsen orifice method. A comparison is made of the weight loss of the cell per unit time obtained in the above experiments, that calculated from Richardson and Alcock&apos;s measurements of the S2 pressure above FeS in equilibrium with iron, and the dissociation constant for diatomic sulfur from spectroscopic and thermal data. EXTENSIVE equilibrium measurements have been made to determine the sulfur potentials of a great many systems of metallurgical interest.&apos; In order to confirm their reliability, to supply data which may be of use in further thermodynamic calculations, and to establish the reliability of the Knudsen orifice in obtaining accurate thermodynamic values at high temperatures, the present investigation on the pressure of the gaseous species above FeS in equilibrium with iron has been carried out. The Knudsen orifice method has been used for these pressure measurements. Experimental The apparatus and general technique for this investigation are the same as that reported for the determination of the vapor pressure of silver.&apos; To reduce the residual gas pressure in the evacuated chamber, a titanium getter, maintained at run temperature, was introducbed. Several types of Knudsen cells were used—platinum, zircon, and fused silica. The orifice in the zircon cell was fashioned with a small diamond wheel. The same precautions were used in this investigation as were employed in the work on Mo2S2.3 The FeS-Fe mixture was prepared by heating a sample of pure FeS,, supplied by K. K. Kelley of the Bureau of Mines, with excess iron powder, cp grade, obtained from the Fisher Scientific Co. These two substances were heated in a closed Armco iron crucible at 960°C, held in a vacuum of less than 10" mm Hg for 24 hr. The mass was then removed from the cell and ground in an agate mortar. In this form it was charged to the various Knudsen cells. Heating the Knudsen cell for an additional two days was sufficient to obtain constant rates of weight loss of the cell. The data obtained in this investigation are recorded in Table I. To establish whether or not a sulfide of iron is volatile at these temperatures, 0.7646 g of the FeS-Fe mixture, described above and containing 69.2 pet Fe, was placed in the zircon Knudsen cell. Run Nos. 103 to 109 were performed on it. After the completion of these runs, the total amount of iron left in the cell was obtained by chemical analysis. It contained 0.537 g Fe, compared to 0.529 g in the original charge. Thus, there was an apparent gain in iron of 1.5 pet. This is attributed to unknown experimental error, and the conclusion is that no sulfide of iron is volatile. The vapor pressure of pure iron4 is about one thousandth that of the sulfur pressure&apos; at these temperatures. The vapor pressure of iron inside the Knudsen cell will be almost exactly that of pure iron, since in the iron-rich phase the percentage of sulfur is of the order of 0.025 pet.At this low percentage of sulfur Henry&apos;s law is probably obeyed by the sulfur. Thus, the iron will obey Raoult&apos;s law. In any event, the vapor pressure of iron will be lower than that of pure iron and, since the vapor pressure of pure iron is negligible compared to the pressure of sulfur, the weight loss of the cell due to the vaporization of iron should be negligible. Since neither iron nor FeS is volatile to an appreciable extent, the total weight loss of the cell must be due to the vaporization of sulfur. Ferrograde manganese ore or its equivalent is essential to the manufacture of every ton of steel produced ; although it is well -known that there are large deposits of low - grade ore in the United States , the production of substantial amounts of ferrograde material from domestic sources presents a problem that becomes more and more critical as the stockpiled ore is depleted through inability to obtain adequate supplies from foreign sources . Consequently, a program of laboratory and pilot - plant investigations designed to solve the problem of obtaining a domestic supply of manganese has been undertaken by the Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines . This paper is one of a new series that will include reports of results obtained in the various investigations conducted under the manganese program . The scope of the program and the organization that was set up to direct and supervise the work were discussed in the foreword of the first paper of this series , Report of Investigations 3606 , Manganese Investigations 1. Alaska?s known mineral endowment includes some of the largest and highest grade deposits of various metals, including gold, copper and zinc. Recently, Alaska has also been active in the worldwide search for sources of rare earth elements (REE) to replace exports now being limitedby China. Driven by limited supply of the rare earths, combined with their increasing use in new ?green? energy, lighting, transportation, and many other technological applications, the rare earth metals neodymium, europium and, in particular, the heavy rare earth elements terbium, dysprosium and yttrium are forecast to soon be in critical short supply (U.S. Department of Energy, 2010). The REE, accompanied by other high field strength metals (such as Nb, Zr, Ti, Th, W), are associated with alkaline complexes of the Hogatza Belt in northwest Alaska; peraluminous tin-granites of the Ruby batholith in central Alaska and the Porcupine plateau in the northeast; and peralkaline intrusive complexes in the southwest Alaska Range west of Anchorage, and on Prince of Wales Island in southeastern Alaska. Limited evidence suggests that the heavy REE are associated with deposits that became more highly evolved by late hydrothermal processes.

The Kucing Liar skarn deposit is located in the Ertsberg mining district, which also contains other skarn deposits and the Grasberg porphyry copper û gold deposit. The Ertsberg district is located in the province of Irian Jaya, IndonesiaÆs easternmost province. Mining development began in the Ertsberg district in 1972 with the mining of the Ertsberg deposit. Daily production in the district now averages about 230 000 tonnes of ore, with the bulk of the ore coming from the Grasberg open pit and the balance from underground mining of skarn deposits. During 1998, 45 218 additional metres of drilling were conducted to delineate and understand the Kucing Liar orebody. The deposit was first intersected in drill holes in 1994 and then was intersected in underground workings located about 1000 metres from the discovery drill hole in 1995. Initially, the two intersections were thought to be different orebodies but are now realised to be different parts of the same orebody. The Kucing Liar deposit consists of magnetite û copper û gold replacement and skarn mineralisation in favorable Tertiary and Cretaceous units. The deposit is approximately 2000 metres in length and averages about 200 to 250 metres in thickness. The width varies from 400 to 600 metres. Drilling in 1998 was directed towards delineating the deposit on its NW and SE ends and to determine its down dip extension. Reserves for the deposit at the end of 1998 stand at 320 million tonnes at 1.4 per cent copper, 1.4 g/t gold, and 5.3 g/t silver. Many important questions remain to be answered concerning the relationship of the Kucing Liar orebody to the major faults in the district and to the Grasberg intrusive complex which contains the Grasberg orebody. Continued exciting developments are anticipated as work to understand the deposit by drilling and geologic study continues.

Stirred ball mill feed used for ultra-fine grinding application requires fine size separation step in order to avoid over-grinding. This paper presents the selectivity curves obtained for oil shale and complex sulfide are using 460 mesh (30 micron) Derrick vibrating screen. Interestingly, the selectivity curves generated from the experimental data were monotonic increasing selectivity for oil shale but not monotonic increasing for sulfide ore. These non-monotonic increasing selectivity curves were similar to the mechanical air separator fishhook selectivity curves described by Luckie and Austin. A 2 stage classification in series model describing the fishhook selectivity curve has been used in proposing the classification mechanism for fine vibrating screens when heterogeneous multicomponent sulfide are undergoes size separation.

THE major metal mine operations of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company in Utah are in the Bingham area. The Company also owns and operates metal mines in the Ophir district, twelve miles south of Bingham, and in the Tintic district, 28 miles south of Ophir. Operations of the Company in the Park City area have been idle since early in World War II. These mining camps, lying at moderate elevations, serviced by railroads, hard-surfaced highways, in close proximity to mills, smelters, cities and towns, fertile valleys, winter and summer vacation areas, and airports are probably as favorably situated as any mining camps in the world. Flyrock is the second leading cause of all blasting related injuries in surface coal, metal and nonmetal mining operations. It is also a primary cause of property damage, monetary losses and “near misses.” For the period 1978 to 2008 flyrock accounted for 11.6 percent of all blasting-related injuries in surface coal, metal, and nonmetal mines. A large amount of published material has been published on the safety hazard of flyrock, on ways to predict how far rock will travel from a blast, as well as ways to protect mine personnel and neighbors from flyrock. However, flyrock incidents continue to occur resulting in fatalities and “near misses” that could have caused fatalities. It was only good fortune in some instances that no one was in the mine's parking lot or other unprotected area when flyrock rained down or in harm’s way when a large rock punched a hole in the roof of a building or other structure.

Fluorspar is the commercial name for fluorite, which is the mineral having the composition CaF2, calcium fluoride. Its valuable properties are due to its content of fluorine, and it is the only important commercial source of that element. The name is derived from the Latin fluere, to flow, because the mineral melts easily and is a good flux. History The mineral has been known since Greek and Roman times, when it was used for drinking cups and ornamental slabs. Various peoples including the Chinese and the American Indians have carved ornaments from large crystals. Its usefulness as a flux was known to Agricola, who wrote about it in 1546.1 Mining began in England about 1775 15 and at various places in the United States during the period 1820 to 1840.28 Substantial production was achieved first in the period 1888 to 1900 in consequence of the development and widespread adoption of the basic open hearth method of making steel, in which fluorspar is used as a flux. After that, production and usage was stimulated by growth in the steel, aluminum, chemical, and ceramic industries and accelerated by World Wars I and II. The organic fluorides called "Freons" entered the picture in 1931, and the use of anhydrous HF as a catalyst in the manufacture of alkylate for high octane fuel blends began in 1942. The development of the froth flotation process in the late 1920&apos;s, a differential flotation scheme for separating fluorspar from galena, sphalerite, and other minerals in the 1930&apos;s, and the application of heavy-media concentrating methods to the treatment of low-grade ores in the 1940&apos;s were outstanding technological contributions that enabled increased production of fluorspar concentrates. Composition and Properties Fluorite in its purest form contains 51.1 pct calcium and 48.9 pct fluorine. Substitution of small percentages of cerium and yttrium for calcium have been noted.4 Mechanical inclusions of gases and fluids such as petroleum and water, and of other solid minerals such as pyrite, marcasite, and chalcopyrite are common. The fluorspar of commerce contains attached and admixed mineral impurities, chiefly calcite, quartz, barite, celestite, and various sulfides. It is interesting that the purest commercial form in which the mineral is sold, acid grade concentrate, contains a minimum of 97 pct CaF2, and as such is of comparable purity to many reagents used in chemical laboratories. Fluorite has a marked tendency to occur in large, well-formed crystals sometimes six to ten inches on a side. It crystallizes in the isometric system, frequently forming cubic and octahedral crystals or combinations thereof. The mineral also occurs in massive and in earthy forms, and in crusts or globular aggregates with radial fibrous texture. Crystalline fluorspar exhibits a great array of colors, from colorless and water clear to yellow, blue, purple, green, rose, red, bluish and purplish black, and brown. The colors are often arranged in alternating bands parallel to cube faces. They may be altered by exposure to X-rays, heat, ultraviolet light, and pressure, and are caused by a variety of factors including the presence of trace impurities and displaced ions in the lattice. Sometimes the changes induced by X-rays can be reversed by ultraviolet radiation. The mineral has a hardness of 4, and is the model of that hardness on the Mobs scale.

At the first meeting, to consider the "Influence of Geophysics upon Geology Curricula," this Committee was joined by the Geophysics and Mining Geology Committees of the A.I.M.E., the Society of Economic Geologists, representatives of the American Geophysical Union, and delegates from the Committees on College Curricula and on Applications of Geology of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Quentin D. Singewald and Sherwin F. Kelly presided. At the ensuing session, especially emphasizing the integration of geology, physics and chemistry for the solution of earth problems, the joint participants with the Geophysics Education Committee were the Geophysics Committee, and representatives of the American Geophysical Union and of the Committee on College Curricula of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. In the following summary of the discussion at the two meetings, written discussion submitted subsequently is not differentiated from that offered orally at the session. A provisional report of the Geophysics Education Committee was presented at the second session, and some of the following discussion refers to it. Dr. W. P. Haynes presented some notes prepared by Dr. F. H. Lahee, Chairman of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists&apos; Committee on College Curricula. This Com- mittee&apos;s inquiries reveal the general opinion that a four-year academic preparation is inadequate, five or six being advisable. The fundamentals, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and English composition, should be stressed in the first three years, with specialization in the last two or three years. Some companies provide an apprenticeship period, and themselves give additional training. During academic years more attention needs to be given to engineering training, to field mapping, and in geology to stratigraphy and sedimentation. The amount of mere memory work should be cut, and men trained to observe and reason. Dr. Lahee emphasized the need of more adequate preparation in English composition, because of the inability of many graduates to compose acceptable reports. Sherwin F. Kelly pointed out that much time in university training, which ought to be devoted to technical subjects, was taken .up with English courses. He emphasized that it is the part of the universities to demand of the high schools that the students they send to the university be properly trained to speak and write English. Prof. W. T. Thom protested against the crowding of high-school material into already overcrowded college curricula. C. E. Dobbin, chairman of the Committee on Applications of Geology of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, described briefly the work of his committee in publicizing geology, and said that it found a widespread popular interest in the subject but a lack of appreciation of its importance. He recommended that attempts to coordinate the works of geologists and geophysicists be expanded somewhat toward the further developing and encouraging of a "species of geopolitician" capable of assisting the progress of geology and geophysics by more vigorous advertising of

Valuations in the mineral industry differ from those of other enterprises because mines and oil wells have a definite life so cannot be considered a perpetuity. This requires that in any mineral-property evaluation the recovery of invested capital is necessary during the life of the property. Capital write-offs for nonextractive industries are assumed to be continuously plowed back to sustain the operation and produce yields on the capital invested. The extractive or mineral industry, however, generally attempts to return to the investor both interest and principal during the life of a property. Normally this is done currently and the dividend includes both items. Where the mineral property possesses large reserves and the life factor approximates a perpetuity, the return on investment is generally comparable to that of industrial stocks. The valuation of a mineral property, at best, is based on educated estimates and judgment factors. This is particularly true as it relates to estimating selling prices over a long term or assessing the quality of management. Also, it is possible to make various assumptions as to rapidity of working out the deposit, varying time for start-up of operations, varying earning rates, so as to obtain different results with the same basic facts. Thus it is not surprising that two engineers, irrespective of their abilities, may not agree exactly even when given the same facts, but their results should be close enough to be used in establishing a fair value for trading purposes. The valuation is no better than the source of basic data and the soundness of judgment factors. Fundamentally the basic principles of mineral valuation are similar for base metals, sulfur, oil, or any other mineral. Each mineral, however, requires an engineer to have a knowledge of such factors as its occurrence, distribution, mining and processing methods, and marketing problems in order to gather and analyze all the facts and data that have a bearing on the earning potential of the property. Present Value of a Mineral Property In essence the present value of a mineral property is a sum of money in today&apos;s dollars that future income from the property are worth. It differs from the total anticipated earnings by the amount of the interest that the unrecouped investment could be expected to earn during the period of recoupment. Thus, if one could accurately estimate what a mineral property will earn during its life, after deducting all operating, administrative, capital, interest, and tax charges, the determination of present value would be a relatively simple mathematical calculation. Normally, where the expected life of the mineral property extends beyond 20 or 25 years, the discounted value of earnings beyond this period is relatively small. A biooxidation-heap pretreatment process was field tested to evaluate enhancing gold recovery from a preg-robbing sulfidic carbonaceous ore. Newmont Gold Company&apos;s Gold Quarry sulfidic carbonaceous ore was inoculated with an iron-grown culture of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans to form a 495 ton test heap. Biooxidation was conducted for a period of 100 days. The most active period of biooxidation occurred during the first 40 days of pretreatment? About 35 to 40% of the sulfide was oxidized. The extent of biooxidation was considered good as the ore particle size was relatively large 58% >1?9 cm (&apos;/< inch). The larger particle size ore limited the extent of bacterial activity. The field test demonstrated the ability to conduct biooxidation in a small pilot test heap. Thiourea was evaluated for extraction of gold from the biooxidized preg-robbing ore.
