The final 26 tables of this chapter, tables 14-39, extend and expand the statistical series on production that was started in the 1963 edition of the "Area Reports: International" volume of the "Minerals Yearbook" and that was subsequently updated and expanded in the 1965 and 1967-88 editions. In this year's edition, for the first time, a column has been added to each of these tables providing a 5 year average for 1985-89, inclusive. This should provide a clearer picture more rapidly of the role of each major producer over the 5-year period. The listing order of major producers, however, continues to be, as in past years, in descending order of rank in the year of review, 1989. With the inclusion of silver and uranium oxide in the 1988 edition of this chapter, this group of tables now includes each of the crude minerals that ranked from 1st to 19th in 1983 in terms of value of their output (as well as four others of lesser rank). These 23 crude mineral commodities accounted for 93% of the estimated value of world crude mineral of world crude mineral production in 1983. In addition, world output of five key down-stream products-aluminum, steel, cement, nitrogen in ammonia, and refined oil are included because of their significance as products.

Although Western Mining Corporation has been producing high grade nickel ore at Kambalda since 1967, it has only recently become a significant gold producer.The main source of Gold ore has been the Victory Gold Mine located 17 kilometres South of Kambalda.This mine produced small tonnages of high grade gold ore from a sediment horizon within a complex sequence of mafic flows, in the 1890's, early 1900's and 1930's.Today, mining is centred around 2 com-pletely different ore bodies named Victory and Defiance, and involves several different mining methods. This paper describes the Operation's history and gives an outline of the proposed stoping methods.

At that time the financial markets were on the verge of collapse and my presentation described the issues. Unfortunately I was correct, and global markets went into a steep nosedive, creating the largest economic downturn since the Great Depression.In hindsight, there were plenty of signs that this was coming. The Supercycle had created massive new wealth. This wealth was largely invested in the United States due to the country’s political stability and credit worthiness. In 2004, the large investment banks convinced the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) to allow them to triple their borrowing leverage ratios. This made the banks more vulnerable to market volatility. The banks then lent money to NINJAS - people with no income, no job and no assets. Even worse was the fact that these unqualified home owners used adjusted-rate mortgages (ARMs) which they, of course, intended to refinance prior to interest rates rising. These mortgages were then bundled up by the banks and sold to investors as “safe” investment products. The money flowed into these products because the rating agencies gave these instruments high marks. These same agencies earned their fees from the very same banks seeking high ratings. (No conflict there). Private debt exploded and peaked out in 2008.These mortgage products were sold in an unregulated shadow banking system and the ARMs came due. Toxic mortgage default rates skyrocketed and the mortgage-backed securities collapsed in value. This house of cards had a negative feedback loop that accelerated the market crash and resulted in more than $1.5 trillion being lost in the securitization sector, a 47 percent decline in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, foreclosure rates skyrocketing and housing prices collapsing. The financial markets were in a nosedive."

With depletion of traditional clean copper reserves and fast expansion of the global copper demand and smelting capacity in the past decade, more and more copper smelters have to treat copper concentrate with increasing content of complex arsenic-bearing minerals. Developing economically viable and environmentally reliable methods and approaches for arsenic control in copper smelting has become more critical for sustainable growth of the copper industry. This paper will report the recent effort of Zijin Mining Group Ltd. in developing processes for improving arsenic control and management in the Zijin Copper Smelter. The arsenic distribution and balance data for matte smelting, converting and refining operations in Zijin Copper Smelter is reviewed for understanding of the current challenges in arsenic control. The processes developed for treating the arsenic bearing waste acid bleed stream from the smelting-converting off-gases wet cleaning circuit and the arsenic sludge produced in the refining electrolyte purification circuit for arsenic disposal are discussed. INTRODUCTION With fast expansion of the global copper smelting capacity to meet the world copper demand and depletion of traditional clean copper reserves, more and more copper smelters have to treat copper concentrate with an increasing content of complex arsenic-bearing minerals. China is the world largest copper consumer and also has the largest copper smelting and refining capacity, but majority of its smelting capacity relies on supply of imported copper concentrate. In order to meet the increasing copper demand and ease the tight supply of clean copper concentrate, the Chinese copper industry has to look at the domestic opportunity of developing non-traditional copper resources, specifically those of lower grades, more complex mineralogy, and increasing level of deleterious elements especially arsenic and also process imported copper concentrate with increased arsenic content. Due to a significant and growing environmental issue associated with arsenic contamination, developing economically viable and environmentally reliable methods and approaches for arsenic management and control in unlocking the maximum value of such arsenic bearing copper resources has become more critical for sustainable growth of the industry.

This investigation was performed to develop chlorination methods for extracting tungsten from scheelite and from an ore concentrate containing a mixture of scheelite and wolframite. On a laboratory scale with proper temperature control using elemental chlorine, over 90 percent extraction of tungsten is achieved. Carbon and sulfur dioxide were studied as reducing agents. The effects of salts such as calcium fluoride and sodium chloride were studied as additives to increase extraction and to reduce impurities in the volatile tungsten chloride product. Sodium chloride reacts with ferric chloride to form a nonvolatile double salt; whereas the chlorides and oxychlorides of tungsten are volatile and consequently condense free of iron. Separation of tungsten from molybdenum from an equal molar mixture was successful by fractionally distilling the oxygen-free chlorides and by selectively condensing the oxychlorides. Yields of 60 and 80 percent, respectively, were achieved for separating the less volatile tungsten chlorides containing less than 0.5 percent molybdenum.

Abandoned coal mines have many underground space resources, such as roadways, shafts, and gobs. Among them, abandoned roadways are the best gas storage space for underground compressed air energy storage (CAES). However, CAES caverns have high air pressure and strict sealing requirements. Therefore, the stability and sealing of abandoned roadways under high internal pressure must be analyzed. Afterward, the suitability of abandoned roadways used for CAES caverns should be evaluated. In this study, the numerical simulation software FLAC3D was used to calculate the stress, deformation, plastic zone volume, and pore pressure of surrounding rock in an abandoned roadway under 10 MPa internal pressure. The influence of buried depth, surrounding rock grade, and in situ stress state on roadway stability and the effect of surrounding rock permeability on roadway sealing were analyzed. Results showed that the stress, displacement, and plastic zone volume of surrounding rock were affected by high internal pressure when the buried depth was less than 300 m, but high internal pressure had little effect on them when the buried depth was more than 300 m. The suitable range of buried depth was more than 300 m. The optimal choice of surrounding rock grade was I and II, followed by grades III, IV, and V. The optimal choice of in situ stress state was σH > σh > σv, followed by σH > σv > σh and σv > σH > σh. The sensitivity of the stability evaluation parameters was ranked in descending order as follows: buried depth, surrounding rock grade, and in situ stress state. When the surrounding rock permeability was less than 1 × 10− 14m2, the 24-h air leakage rate of the roadway was less than 1%. The suitable range of surrounding rock permeability was less than 1 × 10− 14m2.

This presentation reports survey findings that aim to modernize the definition and understanding of the term 'mining.' The survey, conducted via LinkedIn in Winter 2024, garnered responses from a diverse group of individuals, including current or former employees of mining or exploration companies, mining consulting firms, service providers, supplier firms, as well as students and retirees with industry experience. The data, ethically approved by the University of Saskatchewan, offers valuable insights into satisfaction levels within the mining sector and suggests an expansion of the identifying characteristics of definitions of mining. This marks the third CIM gaining insights paper by Beneteau, Espley, and Nyabeze, following previous works on 'Career Satisfaction for Women in Mining' (2010) and 'Mentorship Initiatives in the Canadian Mining Industry' (2018*)."

The ?-to-? transformation has been studied in zirconium alloys containing 22 to 70 wt pct U. In this range of compositions the ? phase can be retained by quenching. Transformation to ? occurs by a nucleation-and-growth process. The diffusion of atoms to preferred lattice sites to yield a partially ordered structure apparently controls the rate of reaction. Alpha uranium and a zirconium precipitate from the supersaturated E phase initially formed in alloys outside the equilibrium E phase composition limits. ZIRCONIUM-Uranium alloys have long been of interest for reactor-fuel applications because of the low thermal-neutron cross section of zirconium. Considerable information is available on the various properties and behavior of these alloys1 although there had been a number of areas where information was incomplete. As part of a program to provide more detailed knowledge in these areas, the presently reported investigation was undertaken. The constitutional diagram of the zirconium-uranium system is shown in Fig. 1.' The system is distinguished by a region of complete solid solubility between the body-centered cubic ß-zirconium and ? uranium phases and the existence of an intermediate phase in the vicinity of 50 wt pct U. This intermediate phase, designated as E, is reported3 to have a primitive hexagonal structure with a = 5.03 and c = 3.08A. The structure is partially ordered with zirconium atoms at the 0, 0, 0 position and zirconium and uranium atoms located randomly at the 1/3, 2/3, 1/2, and 2/3, 1/3, 1/2 positions. While the E phase may be nominally designated as of UZr2 stoichio-metry, the random distribution of uranium and zirconium atoms permit a considerable range in composition. Of interest in the research performed were alloys in the range from 20 wt pct (10 at. pct) to 70 wt pct (47 at. pct) U. In this range of compositions the body-centered-cubic ? phase can be retained either completely or partially on quenching. The nature and kinetics of transformation of the ? phase were the subject of study. Proceeding concurrently with the presently reported work was an investigation by Kearns4 which has since been reported. Kearns studied alloys containing 50 to 60 wt pct U prepared from sponge zirconium. While the work reported here is for alloys prepared from crystal-bar zirconium and the techniques of study are to some extent dissimilar to those employed by Kearns, general agreement so far as results and interpretation can be reported. Experimental Techniques—Alloys were prepared and the transformation of the ? phase studied during interrupted-quench and quench-and-temper isothermal heat treatments by means of hardness measurements and X-ray diffraction and metallographic techniques. The isothermal transformation of the ? phase on quenching and tempering was investigated further employing dynamic-modulus measurements. Electrical resistivity and limited Hall coefficient measurements were also obtained as part of the study. Alloy Preparation and Heat Treatment— Alloys containing 15, 20, 22, 30, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, and 70 wt pct U were prepared from as-reduced uranium and crystal-bar zirconium. The alloys were double arc melted by consumable-electrode are-melting techniques. The final ingots were forged and rolled at temperatures between 790" and 840oC to 1/4-in. rod and 1/8-in. sheet. In 1961 it became increasingly more evident that significant technological changes must be made in minerals beneficiation. The status quo in technology in today's competitive markets will not be tolerated. Higher productivity, greater recoveries and newer and better products must be sought and incorporated with lower operating costs. In other words, "when you build a new mill, don't build an old mill." Recommended reading for proof of the vital necessity of new methods and techniques is in the September 1961 issue of MINING ENGINEERING. The article by one of MBD's cherished and true veterans, E. H. Rose, is entitled "Iron Ore: The BIG Picture". Because of new beneficiation methods for iron ores, nearly 47 million tons of plus 60% iron concentrates will be produced and another 40.1 million tons of capacity will be under construction or committed. Thus in a relatively short period, 87 million tons of this high-grade iron concentrate with record low silica will be available. As Mr. Rose also points out, "in gross tons, without allowance for better grade, this is the equivalent of almost exactly two-thirds of all iron ore used for all purposes in the U.S. and Canada in the peak years of 1953 or 1957." Needless to say, improved mineral beneficiation methods have had far more reaching effects than just the production of higher grade iron concentrate.

PROCESSES for the direct production of iron and steel from ores are hardy perennials, and new processes and revivals of old ones are continually being brought to the attention of the investing public if not to the attention of metallurgists. Direct production of iron and steel is so simple that it offers a fertile field for the promoter. Unfortunately in this way direct processes have acquired a bad name, not always deserved, with conservative capitalists and metallurgists. Direct processes cannot, except in special instances, be looked upon as a substitute for any single operation in present iron and steel practice but must be considered, as one link in an entirely new chain of metallurgical process from ore to finished steel. Thus it is, in my opinion, inadvisable to consider the use of sponge-iron processes as a means of treating ore of ordinary blast-furnace grade to produce open-hearth feed. In time I think it will be found equally inadvisable to smelt iron-ore concentrates in the blast furnace.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating a dewatering technique for coal-clay waste that uses a flocculant, polyethylene oxide (PEO). This flocculant forms strong stable flocs that can be dewatered on a static screen. A field test unit (FTU) using this technique was operated at approximately 400 gal/min, using a waste stream from the flotation circuit of a coal preparation plant. Consolidated coal-clay material con-taining 55 to 60 pct solids was produced when the flotation circuit slurries of 2.7 to 8 pct solids were treated with 0.1 to 0.3 Ib PEO per ton of solids. The FTU was also operated at 64.5 and 87.5 gal/min using a portion of the underflow slurry from the preparation plant's thickener. Consolidated coal-clay material containing 55 to 60 pct solids was produced when the thickener underflow slurries of 19 to 24 pct solids were treated with 0.08 to 0.2 Ib PEO per ton of solids. PED-treated materials continued to dewater when placed in a pit.

In constructing the NORAD Combat Operations Center, controlled blasting techniques were employed to achieve smooth walls and to avoid shattering the rock beyond excavation lines. Extraordinary measures were taken to stabilize the rock to permanently preserve the openings. Rock stabilization was accomplished by means of reinforced concrete and gunite linings, rock boltings, installation of chain-link fabric, and epoxy resin and cement grouting. A particular zone of weakness at a vital location was supported by exceptionally thick reinforced concrete lining, rock bolts, and cement grout.

While intensive research continues to promote a more complete understanding of the potential and resistivity measurements that comprise the electric log, it is believed that consideration should also be given to translating these numerous and often widely separated findings into a coordinated and readable body of fundamental facts designed specifically for the petroleum engineer and geologist. Although provision is made through publication for a ready exchange of new theoretical concepts. it is also desirable to provide reviews and appraisals of the more established techniques and methods from the operating standpoint so that an economic and practical application may be realized concurrently with the theoretical progress. With these basic premises as a guide the author reviews the presnt state of electric log interpretation. The paper is directed not so much to the logging or research specialist as to the petroleum engineer and geologist to whom the electric log is only one of the many tools which he employs. Frequently, these persons do not have the time to follow in detail the many specialized contributions that appear and, as a consequence. are not in a position to place these contributions in proper relation to each other, or to the art as a whole. The paper reviews the basic steps in making quantitative determinations from the electric log of the amount of oil or gas present in subsurface formations and also discusses the degree of reliability of these determinations under various conditions. The paper also indicates the trend of future developments in electric logging systems and methods of interpretation. INTRODUCTION The electric log has been used about 20 years as a means for studying the formations penetrated by a well bore. The first half of this period is characterized by the development of suitable logging techniques and equipment. Although progress in this direction is continuing at a satisfactory rate, the last ten years are characterized more by an increasing interest in methods of electric log interpretation. During this period, a large number of fundamental papers have been published, expounding various logging techniques and particular phases of the interpretation problem. Many of these papers represent important contributions, and a few are classic. This paper is an effort to outline as concisely as possible and in simple terms the main course of progress in electric log interpretation. More specifically, it is the purpose of the paper to review the necessary elements and basic steps used in making quantitative determinations of water saturation from the electric log; and to point out the degree of reliability of these determinations under different conditions. It is strongly advised that the operating staffs of the drilling and exploration departments of oil companies cooperate wholeheartedly with both the electric logging service companies and research organizations in the testing and development of new logging systems and interpretation methods. One purpose of the paper is. however, to indicate the degree of caution which must be exercised in placing confidence in new techniques and interpretation methods that have not been thoroughly tested in the field. It is entirely possible to be cooperative in trying new methods and yet reluctant to believe in the results until the methods are firmly established. It is important to define the meaning of quantitative electric log interpretation. In the most general sense, an interpretation of the log has been made when the electrical characteristics of the formations, as portrayed on the log, have been translated into terms describing the formation geometry, rock type, or any other physical characteristics of the formations. The determination that the top of a sand is at a certain depth is an interpretation of the log. Structural determinations made by correlating electric logs from a given area are also interpretations of the logs. The term quantitative interpretation, however, will be used in this paper in the restricted sense to indicate the determination of the water saturation of a formation. This determination defines the fluid content of an oil and gas productive formation only if the porosity is known, and it assumes that the remainder of the pore space contains hydrocarbons. This assumption is believed to be true for most oil and gas productive formations. The quantitative electric log interpretation may he said to be a determination of the fluid content only to the extent which the water saturation, under the conditions given above. defines it. THE BASIC STEPS The fundamental steps in calculating water saturation from the electric log are: 1. Determination of the true resistivity of the formations from the apparent resistivities as recorded on the electric log.

An important activity of the Bureau of Mines is the continual search for new sources of minerals. As a part of the investigation of strategic mineral deposits in the United States, samples of mercury ores were submitted to the Ore Dressing sections of the Salt Lake City and Albany stations for metallurgical testing. This paper gives data summarizing the results obtained from laboratory beneficiation studies of mercury ore samples submitted during the period 1941 to 1947. Ores tested included three from Jackson County, Oreg., one from Valley County, Idaho, one from Storey County, Nev., and one from Sonoma County, Calif. In general, the ores from Oregon were not amenable to concentration by flotation because of intimate association of cinnabar with other minerals or because of extremely low grade. One Oregon ore was amenable to direct distillation provided lime was added to reduce corrosion of the retort.

ON superficial consideration a technical library might be considered a luxury to the business institution that possesses one. After all, public libraries and research institutions probably contain all the data that would be found in a private technical library, and able consultants are available both within and without a company. In all probability the technical men of a company have in their combined personal libraries sufficient information to answer most inquiries. Nevertheless, possession of such a department is of real economic benefit because of the time it saves its users, because it prevents expensive duplication of technical literature in a company, and lastly, but most important, be- cause it makes readily available a central storehouse of technical facts classified and indexed to meet the demands of the industry or industries concerned.

Ghana currently exports its bauxite raw without any value addition. Gradual depletion of high grade bauxite (with high alumina content) and the emergence of low grade bauxite (with high iron oxide content) calls for novel and inexpensive ways to recover alumina from these low grade ores. Bauxite users have indicated their willingness to pay 10% to 50% higher for a corresponding reduction in impurities by a similar amount. This project therefore investigates the carbothermal upgrading of the Ghana Awaso bauxite using waste polypropylene as reductant in a locally designed gas-fired furnace. Composite pellets of low grade bauxite sample (assaying 45% Al2O3) containing pulverised waste polypropylene were formed, oven dried, placed in fireclay crucible and fired for 30 minutes. The magnetic fraction after reduction was separated by a Low Intensity Magnet and weighed. It was observed that up to 97% of the iron oxides (occurring as hematite and goethite) could be separated into the magnetic fraction as magnetite leaving a nonmagnetic fraction with over 98% Al2O3 as opposed to the 45% Al2O3 in the as-received bauxite sample. This research direction provides yet another simple but effective way for simultaneously upgrading low grade bauxite and recycling waste polypropylene, whilst at the same time decreasing the amount of waste material generated as red mud after the Bayer process.

"Among other components, ore body „T“ was discovered in the Bor pit copper mine at a depth of app. 500m. The ore body is relatively small: 60-65m long, 40-45m wide and up to 50m high, but with an extremely high content of copper and accompanying metals. The rock mass containing the ore body is composed of altered andesite of relatively poor physical-mechanical characteristics. The exploitation of this ore body by way of conventional mining methods was associated with high risk, cost, and potential losses of the rich ore. Due to everything specified hereinbefore, the adopted solution involved ore exploitation with complete ensuring of excavation stability, thus forming an extremely large underground opening. The excavation and supporting were performed according to the NATM principles along with applying shotcrete, 9-25 m long cables, and horizontal and vertical lattice girders. The excavation of the ore body was completed in app. 2.5 years, all the while ensuring complete stability and security of people and equipment; construction works were constantly monitored. The proposed solution for ore excavation enabled more than 95% exploitation of ore as requested by the Investor, while depletion due to waste-rock excavation was less than the allowed 5%. INTRODUCTIONThe Bor copper deposit is located in Eastern Serbia. Copper exploitation in Bor commenced as far back as 1902. A total of 26 ore bodies varying in size and valuable mineral content have been excavated so far. One of the most recent excavated ore bodies is ore body „T“, which is one of the smallest bodies by volume, but also a body with one of the largest content of copper and accompanying metals. An important fact regarding its exploitation is that it is located at a depth of app. 500 m; that its shape is irregular: 60-65 m long; 40-45 m wide and app. 50 m high; and that it lays within a rock mass of relatively poor physical-mechanical characteristics. In addition, above it, in its immediate vicinity, ore body „F“ was previously excavated and its room was refilled with backfill and water. Excavation methods common in mining practice (excavation with caving, excavation with backfilling, excavation with protective pillars) were inadequate in this case for various reasons:• The immediate vicinity of the previous ore body „F“ room could cause expansion of the caving zone also to that room, along with penetration of groundwater and flotation sludge;• Possibility of deformation expansion caused by caving as far up as the surface of the terrain, including the urban area;• Difficulties in maintaining the stability of excavation sidewalls having steep slopes and great height;• Significant loss of ore mass with a relatively high content of metals etc."

THE increased use of heat-resistant alloys (26 per cent Cr, 12 per cent Ni; 16 per cent Cr, 35 per cent Ni; 12 per cent Cr, 60 per cent Ni; etc.) in recent years has been accompanied by continued demands by the consumer for improvement in properties. The manufacturers of these materials, of necessity, have resorted to more critical studies of the basic causes of variations in fundamental properties. To keep pace with the need for augmented information, previous techniques of investigation have been refined and new test methods and instruments created. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the apparatus, experimental technique and precision of measurement that were employed in the exploration of properties of heat-resistant alloy presented in a companion paper.? The detailed precautions in experimental procedure essential for attainment of accurate and comparable data at elevated temperatures cannot be too highly emphasized. THE CREEP TEST Since the fundamental concepts of creep testing have been recognized for the past 20 years, present interest is restricted to refinements in equipment and experimental procedure. The creep-test laboratory constructed for the American Brake Shoe and Foundry Co. is designed to permit 1000-hr. tests in the temperature range of 1200° to 2200°F. with a choice of applied stress extending from 50 to 50,000 lb. per sq. in. in increments of 50 lb. per sq. in. To simplify the calculation of weight combinations, the loading beams (Fig. I) are provided with counterweights to eliminate the tare. The precision of the knife-edges (10.1 ratio) is such that a 10-gram weight placed on the upper specimen grip will be exactly balanced by a 1-gram weight attached to the loading shackle. Check of the loading weights proved the maximum error to be 0.06 per cent. Axial alignment is provided by crossed knife-edges in the grip seats. The furnaces are similar in design to those of Crane and Company, Battelle Memorial Institute, and the U.S. Steel Corporation. An 80 per cent Pt, 20 per cent Rh No. 19 B. and S. gauge wire is used as the heating element. The details of construction are shown in the radiograph reproduced in Fig. 2. The windings are held in place on an alundum tube with alundum cement; the distribution of turns is adjusted to give a maximum temperature gradient of ± 1°F. over a 4-in. gauge length (Fig. 3). Variety among deserts is nearly as great as among other climatic environments. Common to most deserts, and to areas downwind from them, is the dominance of aeolian transport of surface material, at least during some seasons of the year. The result is dilution of local surface materials with varying proportions of chemically uniform fine sand and silt, often imported by the wind from remote areas. Fortunately, desert pavement,.even though separated from bedrock by a meter or more of nearly pure loess, is simply a diluted reflection of nearby bedrock. Infiltration of loess through the surface debris and the rudimentary soil-forming processes in the desert usually preserve the integrity of the pavement. This pavement, or its "downstream" derivatives, provides a suitable sample for exploration geochemistry if proper care is taken to circumvent the aeolian dilution. The simplest and most commonly used method of circumventing the dilution is to use a coarse fraction of soils or stream sediments, discarding or retaining the finer fraction depending upon the magnitude of the dilution. Where the coarse surface debris is composed of rock chips representative of the bedrock sources, the method is successful. Under most circumstances the coarse fraction of the surface material will give a fair representation of gross lithology and will occasionally give an indication of mineral- ization. The major drawback to this approach is that selective weathering and erosion in the vicinity of mineral deposits often lead to the loss of ore minerals into the finer fraction, leaving a coarse residue enriched in feldspar and particularly in quartz; thus, the geochemical signature from a mineral deposit is effectively reduced or completely masked. The second most commonly used method to overcome aeolian dilution, and probably the most effective at present, is to use a heavy- mineral concentrate.
