Hydraulic coal mining is being successfully practiced in China, U.S.S.R., Japan and Canada and in each country, excepting Japan where suitable sites are not available, the system is being expanded to either existing conventional mines or new mines. Productivity levels and economics at these mines are in all cases better than the productivities achieved in conventional mines in the same general localities. In the U.S.S.R. face productivities approaching 50 tons per man shift have been reported while in Canada the latest statistics show average face area productivity levels are in the region of 200 tons per man shift production monitor. In the United States hydraulic mining has not been actively pursued to the same degree and consequently there are no full scale hydraulic coal mines in operation or construction. Because many of the coal measures in the Western U.S.A. are generally somewhat similar to those being successfully hydraulic mined in Western Canada and parts of Siberia it is realistic to believe that successful hydraulic mines can be designed and developed in the Western U.S.A. Particularly if the vast technological base that already exists is used to improve on other people's ideas, systems, methods and equipment.

Of the halogens, the gold iodide complexes are the most stable in aqueous solutions. A series of experiments were performed to investigate the kinetics and mechanism of the leaching reaction between gold and iodide. Using a rotation disk technique, the effects of rotation speed, iodide and iodine concentration, temperature, pH and in the presence of different electrolytes were measured. Oxygen and hydrogen peroxide were also examined as oxidants in the iodide system. The first order reaction rate was found with respect to 13 and half order reaction rate with respect to 1-. The comparison of gold leaching between iodide and cyanide is also presented, in which a rate constant of about 2.6x10-9 mol/cm2? sec for 10-2 M I- and 5x10-3 M I2 was obtained. This value is close to that -for typical cyanidation. Cyclic voltammetry experiments were also performed to examine the electrochemical nature of the reaction which will be presented in part II of this study.

Detailed stratigraphic studies in the Birch-Uchi Lakes area have shown that the volcanic components are arranged in superimposed sequences, or cycles. Each cycle displays a progression from predominantly mafic effusives below to predominantly felsic extrusives above. Sedimentary rocks are preferentially associated with the felsic extrusives. Two volcanic cycles are represented. The average stratigraphic thickness of the volcanic rocks present is 31,000 feet. The original volcanic pile was probably in the order of 40,000 feet thick. The present lithologic composition is estimated to be: mafic volcanic rocks, 60 per cent; felsic volcanic rocks, 27 per cent; sedimentary rocks, 10 per cent; and others, 3 per cent. Gold occurrences are preferentially distributed with respect to the volcanic succession. Of fifty recorded occurrences, thirty-nine are located in the upper felsic division of the lower volcanic cycle; forty are associated with closely interbanded daciterhyolite pyroclastic rocks, andesitic lavas and siliceous sediments. The gold-bearing quartz veins either lie at the contacts of enclosing lithologic units or occupy cross-cutting fractures in one or more adjacent units.

The Express Rail Link (XRL) will provide high-speed rail services from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and a connection to the national high-speed passenger rail network serving major cities throughout Mainland, China. The HK$ 67 B (NZ$ 11.5 Billion) project is of great strategic importance for Hong Kong and is being implemented to a very tight schedule, from early 2010 with completion targeted for 2015.The works include a 15 platform terminus station in West Kowloon, 26 km of twin track tunnels from the terminus to the Hong Kong/Shenzhen boundary at Mai Po, tunnel vent shafts/adits/emergency rescue siding and a stabling siding facility. Trains on the Hong Kong section are intended to operate at speed up to 200 km per hour and up to 350 km per hour on the Mainland section.This presentation will provide an overview of the entire XRL project, with a focus on the challenging geotechnical and spatial constraints on the tunnel works. This is an abstract only. No paper was prepared for this abstract.

An AFMAG survey was flown in 1968 over the Upper Nelson River area, Manitoba. The flight direction was northwest-southeast and flight spacing was 2 miles. In the Cross Lake Subprovince, AFMAG showed that an isolated peridotite outcrop was part of a dike that extended over 80 miles. Diabase dikes are not always marked by an anomaly, but isolated cross-overs, when used in conjunction with geological and magnetic data, permit their extrapolation. Anomalies coincide with areas of sulphide mineralization. In the Flin Fion Subprovince, known and unknown northeast-trending faults are detected. The Berry Creek fault was extended south through Tramping lake, then under the Paleozoic cover. Conductors were detected at, or near, the axes of major synclines within Amisk and Snow Group sediments. Granitic terranes have low conductivity and, because they are characterized by smooth AFMAG profiles, they can be delimited. AF.MAG is being recognized as a geophysical method that can aid geological mapping and interpretation. Its most important contribution to the geologist will be in regions where out-crops are sparse.

Excess water can lead to instability and even failure in tailings storage facilities (TSFs). Simply reducing the amount of water in TSFs could be the best way to ensure the safety of nearby communities. In this case study we investigated the effects of reducing the water content in tailings slurry at a copper-cobalt-zinc mine in Mexico. An environmentally friendly polymer was used as a drag reduction agent (DRA) to offset the increase in solids percentage. The potential effects of the increased solids concentration on the tailings transportation system were also assessed. A series of ‘what if’ studies was conducted to assess whether adding the polymer would allow the solids concentration to be increased without changing the pressure loss in the tailings pipeline. The studies entailed conducting pipe loop tests to investigate these changes under various solids/ polymer concentrations and then constructing a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation model using the test results. The validated model was used to determine the optimal polymer percentages needed to maintain the same pressure loss under baseline (30% solids) conditions, and to assess the potential risks (clogging, increased erosion rates) to the pipelines. The potential water savings were found to be significant, varying from about 1.852 Mm3/a at 35% solids to 3.915 Mm3/a at 45% solids.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a comprehensive laboratory study of the thermal ignitability of various carbonaceous dust clouds with particular emphasis on various ranks of coal dust. The tests were conducted using a new 1.2-L furnace. Autoignition temperatures of dust clouds were obtained as a function of coal volatility and particle size. Dust particles and gas samples were collected by a rapid-sampling system in order to study the reactions involved in preignition and postignition processes. The autoignition temperatures measured in the new 1.2-L furnace were significantly lower and therefore more conservative than those measured previously in the Godbert-Greenwald furnace. The combined effects of thermal and electrical ignition of dust clouds were also studied in the 1.2-L furnace using electrical discharges of varying energies at ambient and elevated temperatures. The minimum spark energy necessary to ignite a dust cloud decreased significantly as the temperature of the dust cloud increased.

The particular purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the development of underground conveying as applied to methods of working coal in the mines of Alberta. Historical A retrospective view of coal mining discloses a continuous effort, on the part of those interested, to substitute mechanical contrivances for hand labour. A patent for a coal-cutting machine was granted to Michael Menzies in 1761, at which time much of the transportation of coal underground was accomplished by means of sledges. Early forms of cutting machines attempted to duplicate the action of a miner's pick, and one hundred years lacer than Menzies? patent we still find this class of machine, driven by water power or compressed air, in use to a limited extent. A coal-cutter using the principle of a circular saw and worked by hand was exhibited in London in 1851, and from these crude beginnings the machines of today have been evolved. Transportation of coal underground has similarly been subject to considerable improvement. The above mentioned Michael Menzies took out a patent in 1750 covering the use of a self-acting incline plane, which is probably the earliest record of any system devised to lighten the load of the crammer or car-pusher of those days. In the year 1868 the Gillot & Copley machine was patented, this being a compressed-air-driven disc coal-cutter which proved highly successful. The chain cutters were a natural development from this type, and for a number of reasons they have been even more successful in the majority of cases.

This paper presents the results of a hypothetical case study that evaluates the potential transition of a large copper mining and extraction operation to 90% renewable energy. The case study considers three phases to accomplish such a transition; phase I considers installation of renewable power generation at the site to meet a portion of the current electric power needs, phase II considers conversion of diesel combustion mining equipment to electric equipment, and phase III considers implementation of renewable energy generation coupled with energy storage systems to provide approximately 90% of the total mine site energy requirements. The paper evaluates the results in the context of a range of purchased electric power unit costs ($0.065, $0.100, and $0.135/kWh) as well as various carbon tax scenarios ($0, $5.00, and $37.30/t CO2). While the case study is hypothetical and considers a range of assumptions, it clearly identifies a pathway to potentially economically viable transitions to a renewable energy platform for mining companies. This represents an approach that mining companies can use to help to meet emissions targets, as well as social responsibility and reporting requirements.

Platinum-group metal (PGM) converter matte from the Stillwater Complex, MT, was subjected to chemical and biological leaching in an effort to upgrade the matte by decreasing the Cu and Ni content. Copper and NL extractions were optimized in a two-stage chemical leach. Atmospheric pressure sulfuric acid leaching removed over 90 pct of the Ni and Fe in the first stage, while 95 to 98 pct of the Cu was removed is the second stage using an acidified cupric chloride leach. This two-stage leach, followed by an elemental sulfur removal step, decreased the weight of the matte by 90 pct. The combined Cu and Ni content was reduced from 65 pct to less than 20 pct, while the PGM content was increased from less than 2 pct to 26 pct. Biological oxidation using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans also proved to be an effective method for removing Cu and Ni. Over 90 pct of the sulfide was oxidized and 99 pct of the Cu and Ni were solubilized, leading to a 60 pct reduction of sample mass during the 17 week bio-oxidation of the Stillwater converter matte. The final residue, after removal of jarosite that accumulated during bio-oxidation, contained less than 3 pct combined Cu and Ni and 6 pct MM.

"Therma1 and chemical treatment of respirable size silica dusts samples is shown to induce marked changes in their hemolytic activity. The cytotoxicity of crystalline a-quartz (Min-U-Sil), and fumed silica (Cab-0- Sil) particles, as measured by a hemolytic activity protocol, is decreased by calcination and can be related to the dehydroxylation of the surface. The hemolytic activity of P-cristobalite particles of respirable dust si7.e was also determined and found to be lower than that of a-quartz. The change in the surface structure resulting from thermal treatment is detectable by photo-acoustic infrared spectroscopy and zeta-potential measurements. The absorption band in the 3200-4000 cm-1 frequency region of both Cab-0-Sil and MinU- Sil disappears upon heat treatment while a sharp band, identified with single silanol groups, at 3750 cm-1 increases in intensity. The zeta potential-pH profile, in the pH range of 4.0-7 .0, of the calcined, siloxane surfaced particles is more negative than that of material with a silanol surface.The cytotoxicity of the crystalline and fumed silica dusts was also found to be strongly dependent on particle size. Fumed silica of large surface area (small particle size) exhibits an initial increase in hemolytic activity upon calcination. This result confirms other experimental observations pointing to a particle size of maximum toxicity. INTRODOCTIONThe toxicity of silica and other mineral particles, as manifested by their role in inducing pneumoconiosis, fibrosis, silicosis and other pulmonary disorders is largely traceable to the characteristics of particle surfaces and to particle morphology. The great wealth of data on the physical and chemical properties of silica is still insufficient for a comprehensive understanding of the specific parameters to be associated with fibrogenic activity and, correspondingly, with the optimum means for characterizing and quantifying the toxicity of dusts, and the design of possible preventive or therapeutic methods.The great diversity of parameters that have been proposed and tested for correlation with cytotoxicity suggest that more than one mechanism may be involved in the fibrotic activity of silica particles. The crystalline structure of the material (more active tridymite versus less active crisobalite and passive stishovite), freshly formed surfaces and free radicals associated therewith, silicic acid adsorbed onto silica surfaces, the concentration of hydroxyl groups at silica surfaces, particle size and morphology, among other properties, have been investigated and found to conelate in tests of cytotoxicity."

The land-pebble district of Florida, wnich in 1928 supplied 96.7 per cent of the phosphate production of that State and 82 per cent of the domestic requirements of the United States, is centered in Polk and Hillsboro Counties about 30 miles east of Tampa The deposits are unconsolidated sediments occurring as beds of phosphate matrix overlain by a mantle of barren sands and clays. The matrix consists of a mixture of sand (quartz grains), clay, and phosphate rock in which the coarsest sand is much finer than the coarsest phosphate; that is, the sand is segregated in the fine material. Before the introduction of classifiers the concentration consisted of log washing, and screening at about 20-mesh, which was usually the finest size that could be taken to maintain commercial grade, 66 per cent B. P. L. (bone phosphate of lime) or more. When classifiers were introduced some of the fines that had escaped at the head of the washery and some of the minus 20-mesh material isolated during the washing and formerly lost supplied the feed. During October, 1927, the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy began to investigate the amenability of phosphatic sands to gravity methods of concentration. The work was under the immediate supervision of B. W. Gandrud, acting supervising engineer of the Southern Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Will H. Coghill, supervising engineer of the ore dressing section of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. More comprehensive testing followed and in the early part of 1930 some of the companies cooperated with the bureau and the above-mentioned institutions in conducting a series of tests on hydraulic classification and tabling. The results indicated that marketable concentrates could be obtained with a recovery of 25 to 45 per cent of the phosphate formerly lost. As a result two companies have introduced hydraulic classification to treat the current tailings, and one of them has substituted classifiers for the 20-mesh screens which had been unsatisfactory. Because the phosphate grains and quartz grains have nearly the same specific gravity, the use of concentrating tables by the customary methods is not applicable. The washeries included in the following report are designated as Nos. 1, 2, and 3.

"A survey of 281 mineral exploration agreements examines the ratios among three ways that may be used to purchase an interest in a mineral property, viz: pay cash, pay shares and make future expenditures on the property.The dollar value of the future expenditures exceeds that of cash or shares by about nine times in most of the 110 agreements that contain cash-expenditure or share-expenditure components. Results suggest that cash and shares are treated about the same in terms of value.Buyers and sellers have opposing priorities for the way that they prefer to purchase a mineral property. These opposing priorities should give rise to a perceived 50:50 balance between cash/share payment and future expenditures to satisfy the idealized situation described by most definitions of fair market value (FMV). This balance between cash/share payments and future expenditures appears to be rationalized in negotiations to a FMV when expenditures are nine times greater than cash and/or payments.On this basis, it is proposed that the FMV of a property may be determined by aggregating the dollar amount of the cash/share payments plus one-ninth the dollar value of future expenditures, as set forth in the respective purchase agreement, and proportionately applying such aggregate to full property value."

FUEL-OIL was first substituted for coal at these works in September, 1888. It was first applied in the converting-department to the battery of boilers, consisting of 14 tubular boilers, 16 feet in length by 5 feet in diameter. To operate these boilers with coal for 24 hours required 14 strikers, 3 ash-wheelers, 6 men unloading coal, and 2 water-tenders, making a total of 25 men. With fuel-oil the same boilers require for the same period 2 water-tenders and 4 men to attend to the burners, making a total of 6 men. This gives a saving of 19 men, which, at an average of $2 per day each, amounts to $38 per day. Comparing the consumption of oil with that of coal, we find that for the week ending January 5, 1889, with an ingot output of 6403 tons, 2731 barrels of fuel-oil were used as against a necessary consumption of coal for the same work of 848 tons, showing 3.22 barrels of fuel-oil to be equivalent to one ton of Indiana block-coal. Figuring oil at 60 cents per barrel, and coal at $2.15 per ton, we have as the cost of oil $1.93, as against $2.15 for its equivalent in coal. In December, 1888, the rail-mill battery of 26 boilers, of the same dimensions as those in the converting-department, was equipped for fuel-oil. For the week ending January 5, 1889, with a rail out-put of 5208 tons, 5987 barrels of oil were consumed, as against a necessary consumption of coal, to do the same work, of 1805 tons, showing 3.31 barrels of fuel-oil to be equivalent to one ton of Indiana block-coal, which at the costs named above would show $1.98 worth of fuel-oil to he equal to $2.15 worth of coal. The labor required to operate the rail-mill boilers for 24 hours, with coal as fuel,is: 26 stokers, 4 water-tenders, 6 ash-wheelers, 12 men unloading coal; total, 48 men. With oil as fuel, the same work requires 4 water-tenders and 6 men to attend to the burners; total, 10 men; a saving over coal of 38 men in 24 hours, which, at an average price of $2 per day, would be $76 per day. This paper discusses elementary laws pertaining to seismic reflection methods and presents a general and simple criterion for determining the direction of dipping of a reflection horizon from observational data of distance and time. The important development of practical geophysics and the successful results obtained in America, Germany, and other countries, caused introduction of geophysical methods of prospecting in Poland. Of all methods, seismic prospecting has proved most successful in the area of the Carpathian foreland, where new oil reserves are to be expected. Because of the great depth of the sedimentary column in that area, ranging sometimes over 2000 meters, it was obvious that only the seismic reflection method could give reliable information regarding the structural features of these strata at such a depth. During the experimental surveys it appeared that the complicated geological conditions of that area do not always allow prediction of the depth and the angle of dipping of reflecting horizons, and for that reason information about the inclination of a given horizon has great importance in the determination of subsurface structure. Therefore the problem arises of obtaining from seismic reflection data reliable information as to the direction of dipping of reflecting strata, without any previous knowledge of the average velocity and depth of geologic horizons under consideration. Reflection Seismograms The earth, being a nonhomogeneous medium, is composed of a series of layers, which differ from each other in their physical properties, particularly in their elastic coefficients. These variations in elasticity are the cause of refraction and reflection of a seismic wave. Synthesis of high - Btu gas , using the Fischer - Tropsch reaction was investigated in a tube - wall reactor of 2 - inch steel . The catalyst was carbonexpanded iron ( CEI ) , formed on the walls of a steel reactor by exposing the reactor to 1H₂ + 100 synthesis gas under certain conditions . Advantages to be gained from successful development of the CEI - coated tube- wall reactor are elimination of catalyst plant and catalyst handling and charging operations , high- temperature operation , and a relatively low- cost , reactor -heat recovery system . In one test ( TW- 8 ) in which the reactor was filled with CEI , the reactor was operated for 1,910 hours before the test was stopped because of excessive pressure drop caused by carbon deposition . The pressure drop was satisfactory for 1,000 hours of operation at an hourly space velocity of 300 , but it increased rapidly at space velocities of 600 and 1,000 . When operated at a space velocity of 300 , with a ratio of 1 to 1 recycle at 534 ° C , a conversion of 72 percent of the 3H + 100 synthesis gas was achieved . The product gas had a heating value of about 610 Btu per cubic foot and could be suitably upgraded to 900 - Btu gas by subsequent use of a nickel catalyst . CEI did not operate effectively as a film catalyst under conditions of generation tried in this study . Generally , operation of the 2 - inch reactor with CEI catalyst was unsatisfactory because of poor reproducibility of the activation step and poor temperature control resulting in high- operating temperatures and eventual plugging of the reactor . Tests using CEI in fixed , packed beds suggest that the most likely application for CEI in producing high - Btu gas would be a moving - bed reactor , where sufficient bed movement and heat removal are provided to prevent plugging .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, through an Interagency Agreement with the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Command (TACOM), has successfully developed a steel expendable pattern casting process (EPC) for the manufacture of armorplate. The new armor is lighter and more ballistically effective than conventional rolled homogeneous armor (RHA), and costs less. An applique armor spinoff from the program was field-tested during the Gulf War. The applique armor withstood direct impacts from enemy munitions without failure.
