The Gabbs magnesite-brucite deposit is unique in size and is one of two magnesite deposits being exploited in the United States. It is near the town of Gabbs, which is one hundred miles southeast of Reno, in west-central Nevada. The brucite was discovered in 1927; the magnesite was found while exploring the brucite. During World War II, more than 80,000 tons of magnesium metal was produced from about 900,000 tons of magnesite ore mined from these deposits. An additional 5,000,000 tons of magnesite and 1,000,000 tons of brucite have been produced for use in making magnesia refractories and chemicals. Basic Inc., presently the only producer, mines 1.5 ± 0.25 million tons of ore and waste annually using high-selective open-pit rriethods; the ore is up-graded, calcined, and processed into a variety of products. Known reserves of highgrade (less than 5 per cent CaO) magnesite ore total more than 25,000,000 tons, and there are larger tonnages of lower-grade material; brucite reserves are small. The magnesite and brucite are in generally west-dipping dolomite of the upper member of the late Triassic Luning Formation, in the over-riding plate of the Paradise thrust fault. A great variety of dikes and a stock of Cretaceous granodiorite intrude the Luning Formation in the vicinity of the magnesite-brucite deposit. The magnesite bodies are scattered over an area of about a square mile around a prong of granodiorite which extends north from the stock. The brucite is mainly in two bodies in contact with the prong of granodiorite; at the surface and along deeper cracks the brucite has weathered to hydromagnesite and artinite. In the area of magnesite-brucite mineralization, much of the dark, fine-grained, schistose, regionally-metamorphosed dolomite of the Luning Formation has been marmorized to a lighter-colored, coarser-grained, massive dolomite that is intergrown in varying proportions with the magnesite. The magnesite and marmorized dolomite can not be distinguished visually. In addition to the two varieties of dolomite, the gangue in the magnesite and brucite bodies mainly is the various varieties of dike rock, serpentine and a variety of other "contact" minerals, and "post-ore" dolomite and calcite. The magnesite ( and recrystallized dolomite) is believed to have formed by the hydrothermal replacement of the regionally metamorphosed sedimentary dolomite; alternatively it has been suggested that the magnesite is sedimentarv and formed contemporaneously with the dolomite in an embayment of the Triassic sea. Because all the igneous rocks exposed in the immediate vicinity of the magnesite deposits appear to be younger than the magnesite, the ore-forming solutions are thought to be related to a somewhat older granite which crops out elsewhere in the area. The brucite is the result of contact-metasomatic replacement of magnesite during the emplacement of the granodiorite stock.

"Modem aluminum smelters are facing significant operating cost pressure. Key methods used by smelters to manage this pressure are automation and production-information systems to optimize processes, manage quality, anticipate problems and reduce operating costs. In 2002, Aluminerie Alouette Inc. began its Phase II Expansion project, and retained the joint venture of SNC-Lavalin and Hatch (SLH) as its engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) team. Alouette had the distinction of being one of the most efficient aluminum smelters in the world. Alouette already understood the importance of systems integration in project delivery. For Phase II, key objectives were identified to ensure ""a state of the art"" integrated architecture that would support Alouette's production goals to integrate the existing facilities with the expansion, to form a single efficient facility and meet project schedule and budget targets. Achieving those objectives within the context of a large project often creates major challenges due to the nature of the traditional EPCM delivery model, which relies on several vendors and third-party-systems integrators. In this case, an integrated Alouette-SLH team was made responsible for all aspects of the systems integration, taking over the task from most suppliers. The integrated team was responsible for delivering an automation system and plant-wide-production IT system for the new facilities while accommodating migration for the existing systems. Through the use of rigorous methodology and advanced state of the art technology, the IT and automation strategy led to significant value creation and is recognized today as one of the key factors of the project's success. The primary results were: fast and efficient start-up of facilities, due to quality programming and implementation; a plant able to operate as a single entity; automation and IT systems delivered before time and under budget; standard programming methods implemented throughout the plant; and reduced and simplified maintenance."

The majority of individuals involved in the mining industry can appreciate and under-stand that mining is an activity that is necessary to satisfy the very basic needs of society, and to assist in accommodating our ever-changing world. As the expression goes, ?if it can?t be grown, it has to be mined.? And at this point in time, society has granted the mining industry the right to go about the business of mining, with the general anticipation that the work will be carried out without causing undue harm to the environment or populations in and around the mining operation. The term ?sustainable development? is gaining momentum as a popular concept, and indeed it has become something of a catch-all phrase, but it is important that the idea behind the term is not cast aside as a nonsense buzz word, as it simply is an indication that development (e.g. mining) can be satisfactorily carried out with an eye toward stewardship of the environment and society. On Feb. 19, 2010, a round-table discussion (Roundtable 2010) on ?Strides Toward Sustainability in Mining? was hosted by Knight Piésold and Co. (Knight Piésold) at the Red Lion Inn and Casino in Elko, NV. Knight Piésold had local representatives (Bryan Ulrich and Steve Boyce), as well as representatives from other office locations (Cynthia Parnow and Rick Damiani from Denver, CO, and Rick Frechette from Tucson, AZ) to help facilitate the discussion. The meeting played host to 30 attendees from five states. Attendees included personnel from nine mining properties and various corporate offices. The majority of participants were people who are directly involved with environmental work on a day-to-day basis. Others were project managers whose jobs involve some level of environmental focus.

SLon magnetic separators utilise the combined force fields of magnetism, pulsating fluid and gravity to continuously beneficiate fine weakly magnetic minerals. They possess the advantages of high efficiency, low operative cost and high reliability. Until now there were about 600 SLon magnetic separators widely applied in processing oxidised iron ores, ilmenite, manganese ore and many other minerals. In this paper, several typical oxidised iron processing flow sheets with SLon magnetic separators are introduced.

The majority of efforts to improve primary copper sulfide leaching have focused on solution chemistry, temperature, O2 pressure, ultra-fine grinding, the use of catalysts, etc. Historically, very few studies have focused on the solid/solution interface. A new, patent pending approach to catalyzed, copper sulfide leaching has been discovered by FLSmidth that enables manipulation of the 2-D semi-conductor properties of chalcopyrite surfaces to the benefit of higher electrochemical reactivity. Copper dissolution rates are then further accelerated by incorporating a Stirred Media Reactor (SMRt) into the process. By using minute amounts of Cu2+ to "pre-activate" chalcopyrite, leach times have been reduced from >20 hours with incomplete Cu dissolution to <2 hours with 98+% Cu dissolution at 80°C. The pre-activation process takes only minutes to complete at temperatures of 80°C or less. The total atmospheric leaching process, incorporating the pre-activation and Stirred Media Reactor is compatible with existing SX/EW processes. Results of batch leach testing are presented and possible mechanisms are discussed.

Introduction A mechanical spring has been .defined by Wahl ( 1) as &apos;an elastic body whose ?primary function is? to deflect or distort under load, and which recovers its original shape when released after being distorted&apos;. Most material bodies are elastic to some extent ? and will deform under load, but they are seldom regarded as springs since this is not their primary function. The principal applications of springs are the absorption of energy and the mitigation of shock, the support cf moving masses or the isolation of vibration, and the provision or measurement of definite loads or torques. A large number of spring types have been developed to serve these purposes and to meet the different operational requirements; they range from the large semi-elliptic leaf suspension spring to the delicate watch hairspring. The springs of most importance in machine design, however, are the helical round-wire compression or tension types. They are made in a wide variety of sizes and are used in tremendous quantities, mainly because of their low cost, their compactness, and their relatively high efficiency. Their field of application is as broad as that of machine design itself, but the bulk of production is almost certainly for suspension systems of vehicles such as automobiles, freight and passenger cars, and mine cars, and it is with the last of these applications that this paper is primarily concerned.

Selecting sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) as grinding aid, the effect of grinding aid on the grinding efficiency of bauxite taken from Shanxi province was studied and its mechanisms were analyzed by measuring the variation of adsorption characteristic, pulp viscosity, surface electric potential of the bauxite and the surface appearance of particles. The results showed that, compared with no grinding aids added the content of -0.074mm in the ground product was increased by 5.45 percentage points under the optimal grinding conditions adding PAAS as grinding aid when the amount of PAAS was 0.7%wt of bauxite. Because the physical adsorption and chemical adsorption were occurred on the bauxite surface, which could reduce the pulp viscosity, change the surface electric potential of the bauxite, enhance the surface appearance of particles and lower the surface hardness of the bauxite, the grinding efficiency of bauxite was increased by PAAS. "The mining industry is constantly seeking methods for optimising the exploitation of mineral resources, such as iron ore, in a sustainable and eco-efficient manner for economic and social benefit. When faced with resources that have mineralogical or textural complexity, poorer grades or geological variability, it is particularly important to apply a comprehensive geometallurgical approach to the development of the mining operation, from resource definition through to processed product. Integral to this approach is the quantitative characterisation of representative samples across the whole orebody.A key factor that associates the geological characteristics of iron ores to their processing response is ore texture. While the classification of samples on the basis of chemical or physical properties alone is often not sufficient to predict their processing behaviour, classification and quantification of texture types can be effectively correlated to metallurgical performance in processes such as blending, beneficiation, pellet making, sintering and ironmaking. Kumba Iron Ore Ltd is currently commissioning the Sishen Expansion Project (SEP) û a brownfields project on the Sishen Iron Ore Mine located in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa. SEP is designed to produce 13 Mtpa of product from 21.7 Mtpa of ROM feed. The beneficiation section of SEP employs jigs to process narrow size fractions in the 25 x 0.8 mm size range. The -0.8 mm fraction is screened out ahead of the jig plant and rejected as waste without any prior beneficiation. The processing of this fraction was not included in the early stages of SEP development because no suitable beneficiation or dewatering technologies could be identified within the time-frame required to implement SEP. This paper presents the SEP 1B project, ie the metallurgical and process engineering study that was done to evaluate the techno-economic viability of processing the -0.8 mm material of SEP. To support this evaluation, metallurgical bench scale testwork was done on selected samples characterising the material types used in the SEP for gravity concentration beneficiation. Subsequently, pilot testwork on a 300-ton bulk sample demonstrated that an integrated teeter-bed/spiral circuit could be used to successfully beneficiate the -0.8 mm fraction. The study has established the viability of the proposed process and has concluded that approximately 390 000 tpa could be produced and added to the SEP fine ore product without violating the applicable product specifications. The proposed process has been designed to be implemented in modular units in order to facilitate implementation and ensure future expandability. Based on the recommendations of the study, approval has been granted for the detail design feasibility study. Production is scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2010.

Notches are preferential sites for fatigue and for environmentally assisted cracking (EAC) initiation. Semi-empirical notch sensitivity factors have been used for a long time to quantify notch effects on fatigue design. Recently, this concept has been mechanically modeled using techniques which properly consider the notch tip stress gradient influence on the fatigue behavior of mechanically short cracks. This model properly calculates such values from the basic fatigue resistances of the material, its fatigue limit and crack growth threshold, considering the characteristics of the notch geometry and of the loading, without the need for any adjustable parameter. Such criteria to estimate notch sensitivity and tolerable short cracks on fatigue have been extended to EAC conditions and verified by proper tests. In its simplest version, the criterion for the maximum tolerable stress under EAC conditions uses the resistances to crack initiation and to large crack propagation and the characteristic short crack size under EAC, considering the crack size and stress intensity factor. Moreover, the tolerance to short cracks under fatigue and under EAC conditions can be unified in an extended Kitagawa-Takahashi diagram, a new and potentially very useful tool for material selection tasks.

"Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations. New Mexico leads U.S. domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica and decorative stone. New Mexico also has the potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REEs), niobium and zircon, and other REE deposits are being explored. REE-thoriumuranium veins have been found in the Gallinas, Capitan and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Exploration for beryllium has occurred in the Ojo Caliente No. 2, Cuchillo Negro and Victorio mining districts. Companies also are examining high-calcium limestone and high-magnesium dolomite for potential development, while aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. IntroductionIndustrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life. They are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics to refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate nearly every aspect of daily life, their presence and their roles are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the nonmetallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a byproduct of cleaning natural gas, one of the world’s major energy fuels.Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 41 percent of the more than $3.1 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2014 (Table 1). Since the beginning of BOF process, slag formation has been subjected to extensive development. During the initial stages of the blow, fast slag formation is primordial for the process performance. This is mainly to allow oxidizing reactions, and also to protect the refractory. A modeling of BOF process for the purpose of process optimization requires precise knowledge concerning the dissolution of CaO and MgO based materials. Using this knowledge, the optimal process conditions can be ensured by a controlling of the slag formation during the converter steelmaking process. Taking into account an application of large amount of different raw materials, as well as location-specific process conditions, the characterization of the dissolution behavior of different additives is an important key to improve the technological process. Thereby, in the frames of this project, an appropriate model for slag formation is established and compared to operational results for a 330t BOF, operating at ThyssenKrupp CSA, Santa Cruz, Brazil.

Diesel-powered equipment operating in a gassy underground mine could conceivably ingest a methane-air mixture from the mine atmosphere that could cause the diesel engine to overspeed, or exceed its rated speed. Engine overspeed, particularly if extreme (engine runaway), could result in personal injury, a possible mine explosion, and/or catastrophic engine failure. In this report, the Bureau of Mines reviews the literature on the potential hazards of methane-induced diesel engine overspeed. Also included are the Bureau&apos;s findings from consultations with representatives of the diesel engine industry to determine the specific engine behavior that could he expected under the overspeed condition. The report summarizes data on mine accidents involving methane, discusses results of tests on the compression ignition of methane in diesel engines, and examines fuel governors and intake-air-cutoff devices, two kinds of devices used to prevent overspeed. Analysis of the information gathered suggests that the conditions necessary to cause a diesel engine to overspeed uncontrollably are not likely to occur, particularly if the engine is equipped with flame-proofing devices. The available literature and lack of actual overspeed case histories suggest that the safety devices currently in use are sufficient to prevent diesel engine overspeed.

The primary focus of management today is safety, or preventing negative, generally irreversible, events of acute duration. The outcomes of safety-related events are usually visible and can evoke strong emotions if the results are severe. Experts now see that occupational illness and disease also result in significant emotional and financial toll to workers, their families and communities, and to their employers. Effective health and safety management must include acknowledging the importance of occupational health hazards and the proportionate application of resources to address those issues. Improvement in workplace conditions and decrease or elimination of illness and disability are due to actions within the workplace and result from the implementation of risk prevention and control measures. However, success may only be visible months or years later and may require interventions that have to be maintained over prolonged periods. This demands continuous, co-ordinated effort to ensure sustainability of diverse occupational health programmes and the relevant management systems. Too often occupational health is not seen as being part of the general management of business, but rather the function of a medical practitioner somewhere off site in a clinic. Integration of occupational health management systems with other management systems within an organization is essential for its success.

O Steel Frame é um sistema construtivo eficiente e sustentável. Sua estrutura é em perfis de aço e pode suportar até 4 pavimentos, e sua fundação é em radie. Por isso, os perfis da base são revestidos de manta asfáltica para serem protegidos de agentes degradantes. Após algum tempo, a manta perde sua eficácia, expondo o perfil ao meio. O objetivo dessa pesquisa é explicar a corrosão do perfil, através da investigação por MEV, EDS e teste de tração, mostrando a influência do concreto no mesmo, mediante a determinação de suas características mecânicas após o contato. Os resultados mostram difusão dos elementos do concreto no aço, afetando suas propriedades mecânicas através do aumento de limite de resistencia a tração e redução do módulo de elasticidade. Houve também redução na superfície de zinco, mostrando principio de corrosão.

A method has been developed in the laboratory for successfully treating titaniferous magnetite ore from the deposit at Iron Mountain, Wyo. The ore is roasted with 15 percent sodium carbonate to convert the vanadium to a water-soluble form and fix the soda for the subsequent electric-smelting step. Approximately 90 percent of the vanadium is recoverable in a product assaying 80 percent V2O5. The leached calcine is briquetted and smelted in a graphite-lined electric-arc furnace. Substantially all of the titanium is recovered in a soda slag, assaying 60 percent TiO2 and 2 percent Fe, which can be upgraded to 75 to 80 percent TiO2 by leaching with dilute sulfuric acid. The upgraded slag could be utilized for the production of titanium dioxide pigments or titanium tetrachloride. About 90 percent of the iron is recovered as pig iron, containing only minor amounts of vanadium, titanium, and sulfur. The high TiO2 slag compares favorably with slag containing about 70 percent TiO2 being produced by the Quebec Iron & Titanium Corp. at Sorel, Quebec. The data obtained from this investigation indicate that a feasible process has been developed for treating Iron Mountain ore, and larger-scale testing is warranted to develop engineering data for the ultimate utilization of this deposit as a source of titanium, iron, and vanadium. There are adequate supplies of basic raw materials, electric power, water, sodium carbonate, coal, and petroleum products within fairly short distances of Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyo., the nearest cities and probable plant- and labor-supply points.

"AbstractThe Monitoring & Instrumentation Committee (MIC) of DFI Europe has the objective to support DFI members in concern of risk management of geotechnical matters, where monitoring and instrumentation have added value.Work of the CommitteeA study by the committee showed that there are already several existing (national) guidelines. They all have their strengths and limitations and their focus may vary a little per country due to local regulations and typical local building activities, but the main question remains what added value another new guideline would have. More likely it would add to the confusion instead of providing overview.Companies with larger experience in geotechnical monitoring (often larger consultancy firm, contractors or clients) are already quite familiar with its benefits do not really need a new guideline in how to design and effectively apply sophisticated geotechnical monitoring systems for special projects.Therefore the aim of the MIC is to focus a little more towards smaller organizations - that are less familiar with monitoring and instrumentation - and the more ‘regular’ type of project that they are mainly involved in. The MIC wants to create a tool which helps them to create risk awareness, to understand the benefits of geotechnical monitoring and to provide them information about how and where to find the right partners and equipment to setup and apply appropriate monitoring systems for their projects.Monitoring and instrumentation benefits are for example:• Risk control during construction stage;• Costs reduction in design and construction (taken limitation of geotechnical aspects into account).• Prevent of unnecessary delays in construction work• Increasing general awareness of geotechnical risks and possibilities of monitoring.The cost of monitoring compared to the cost of failure and/or the savings that can be achieved play a role in the work of the committee. A sulfur concrete technology has been developed by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, in which chemically modified sulfur is utilized with suitable mineral aggregates to produce construction materials which are resistant to corrosion by acids and salts. This report presents a summary of the basic technology and results of testing the materials under actual operating conditions in 50 corrosive environments in 40 commercial plants. After 4 years of testing, there was essentially no evidence of material degradation or loss of strength. Regular concrete materials were attacked and in some cases completely destroyed under the same conditions. Testing is continuing to establish ultimate longevity and durability of the sulfur concretes. The materials are finding widespread applications in metallurgical, chemical, and fertilizer processing plants.

This paper relates the story of 100 years of mining in the Harbour Seam at the Princess Colliery, Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia. Several interesting anecdotes are included along with the discussion of the evolution of coal mining methods in the area. Finally, some of the recently introduced equipment at Princess Colliery is described, and prospects for the future of the industry are outlined.
