In 1980, the Bureau of Mines investigated the northern Darby Mountains on the Seward Peninsula, AK, for radioactive mineral deposits. Uranium is concentrated in silicified shear zones in biotite quartz monzonite of the Darby pluton. The shear zones are best exposed in steep, narrow, avalanche gullies; they are characterized by radiometric anomalies and by uranium and thorium geochemical anomalies. Radiometric and geochemical anomalies are also found over altered biotite quartz monzonite where there are no visible shear zones. The radiometric and uranium anomalies are often spatially, but apparently not genetically, associated with alkaline mafic and felsic dikes. Similar geochemical and radiometric anomalies over discolored altered zones and geochemical anomalies in sediments downstream from the altered zones indicate that additional areas may also be favorable targets for uranium deposits. Analyses of panned, heavy mineral concentrates show no significant concentrations of uranium or thorium in resistant heavy minerals. This indicates that radioactive elements in the Darby pluton are concentrated in soluble, nonresistant minerals that may constitute a recoverable uranium resource.

"Recently, in order to extract metals, the industry is trying to process old metallurgical slag. The material requires very fine grinding that results in enhanced slime-formation. This in turn leads to problems in the course of the flotation process and to a loss of metal. In addition, it causes difficulties in the wastewater treatment aimed at water reuse. The aggregation and separation of the fine particles and their further subjecting to mineral processing would result in more efficient use of raw materials. Closing the water cycle also would be facilitated. The paper presents results from studying sixteen flocculation reagents, commercially available for treating municipal wastewater, including products based on nanotechnology, for their ability to rend the production wastewater in suitable for reuse in the flotation. It turned out that, from all studied reagents, the cationic C-587 is suitable for the purpose. Some of reagents were studied for their ability to flocculate selectively, in presence of coke fines, rich in copper fines which are produced at grinding of a slag from lead-zinc metallurgy. Most promising reagents are chosen, based on the chemical analysis of the flocculated materials. Open-cycle rough copper flotation experiments with the flocculated fines and recycled wastewater gave encouraging results."

The response of feldspar flotation to tallow diamine dioleate collector in the presence of sulfuric acid is studied using batch flotation experiments. Application of this non-hydrofluoric acid (non-HF) reagent system in the flotation of mineralogically and chemically different feldspar ores is compared with that of the conventional hydrofluoric acid system. The dependence of flotation recovery and concentrate grade on feed particle size distribution, conditioning time, pulp density, and pH, combined variation of collector and acid addition rates, sodium hydroxide concentration in the collector solution, and initial pulp pH prior to conditioning is studied. The results have been discussed in relation to applicability of the non-HF system to plant trials, and the nature of the collector adsorption in the selective flotation of feldspar.

Neste trabalho foi avaliada a influência do tempo entre passes na interação entre precipitação e recristalização durante o processamento termomecânico do aço ISO 5832-9. A evolução da microestrutura foi investigada por microscopia ótica, eletrônica de transmissão e EBSD. Observou-se que quanto menor o tempo entre passes, maiores foram as tensões necessárias para promover a deformação e menores foram os tamanhos dos grãos e precipitados obtidos. Somente precipitados de TiNbN foram encontrados após o encharque e NbCrN durante o processamento. O material sofre recristalização dinâmica e partículas de 50 nm foram efetivas no ancoramento dos contornos de grãos e discordâncias.

In the spring of 1943, when it was evident that the Tensleep sandstone in the Elk Basin field, Wyoming and Montana, held a large reserve of petroleum, Bureau of Mines engineers obtained samples of oil from the bottom of nine wells and analyzed them for such physical characteristics as the volumes of gas in solution, saturation pressures or bubble points, shrinkage in volume caused by the release of gas from solution, expansion of the oil with decrease in pressure, and other related properties. The composition of the gas in solution in the oil was studied. The pressures and temperatures existing in the reservoir and the productivity characteristics of the oil wells were determined. The data obtained indicate that the oil in the Tensleep reservoir of the Elk Basin field has unusually varying physical characteristics, such as a saturation pressure of 1,250 pounds per square inch absolute and 490 cubic feet of gas in solution in a barrel of oil at the crest of the structure, and a saturation pressure of 530 pounds per square inch absolute and 134 cubic feet of gas in solution in a barrel of oil low on the flanks. The hydrogen sulfide content of the 6a r; in solution in the oil varies from 18 percent for oil on the crest to 5 percent for oil low on the flanks of the structure. Of even greater significance is the fact that these and other variable characteristics of the reservoir oil are related to the position of oil in the structure. Many geologists and petroleum engineers have considered all the oil in a petroleum reservoir to have uniform physical characteristics and that equilibrium conditions prevailed in all underground accumulations of oil and gas. That such is not always so is borne out by the results of the study made by the writers.

En ese sentido, el presente texto describe la aplicación de tecnologías emergentes en la remediación de aguas ácidas de mina, tanto en las instalaciones se encuentran en operación o abandono, mediante el empleo de procesos físicos, químicos y biológicos que modifican las condiciones de Eh y pH de los drenajes de mina, de forma que se favorezca la formación de especies insolubles y la retención de la carga metálica disuelta en las aguas.

Potential applications for boom tunnelling machines requires reliable assessment of in-situ performance. The majority of existing classification schemes concentrate on the prediction of excavation rate, neglecting the important influence of tool consumption rates. A statistical approach is taken to the analysis of the performance data, which was obtained first-hand through in-situ monitoring, and laboratory testing of representative rock samples. A statistical discrimination technique is used to produce a scheme for the prediction of performance groups, each of which covers a limited range of cutting rate and/or tool consumption rate.

This manual provides instructions for installing, operating, and maintaining a protective canopy on the Joy Mfg. Co. loader. These instructions are based upon two actual install .at ions: one made in a mine on loader, model 14BU10-11AH, and one in the factory on model 14BU10- 11AH. The parts list and engineering drawings for the protective canopy are included at the end of the manual. And a discussion of some alternative design concepts is also included. The manual can also be used for retrofitting other loaders with similar protective canopies. Skilled mechanics can determine if the instructions herein would be applicable to the other loaders and can determine any necessary modifications if they are not.

A bewildering number of continuous thickeners and clarifiers are used in mineral industries and other heavy industries. General types are: 1. Conventional Thickeners (Fig. 1). 2. Thickeners with Flocculating Feedwells (Fig. 2). 3. Solids Contactors (Fig. 2). 4. Tray Thickeners (Fig. 3). 5. Lamellas (Fig. 4). 6. Conventional Thickeners with Lamellas 7. High Flow, Fluid Bed Thickeners (Fig. 5). These units must be adapted to varied applications. They must provide operating flexibility to meet process needs. Such factors multiply the decisions which must be made prior to the selection of a thickener. The seven types of thickeners listed above, with their variations, share design concepts which limit their application and which can be used to evaluate their performance. Some of these are listed: 1. Feed velocities must be limited and/or controlled. 2. Natural or reagent flocculation is necessary. 3. Horizontal settling area is the basis for capacity. 4. Overflow velocities must be limited and/or controlled. 5. A controlled underflow is necessary. Applying these needs to the basic process concepts is thickener selection. The basic function of a thickener in the minerals industry is the separation of a thickened sludge containing fine solids from water. Early testwork was carried out to select the plant process design criteria and flowsheet selection. Additional testwork was carried out during the feasibility study to support the optimization of the plant design criteria. The test results showed that the recovery of gold was not very sensitive to grind size in the range of 75 to 105 microns. An additional result was that the presence of lead nitrate did not improve the kinetics of gold leaching. This conclusion was supported by the low content of sulphides in the ore. It was also found that the presence of lead nitrate increased copper dissolution, producing the potential for an increase of copper reporting to electrowinning, which is detrimental to the overall gold recovery process. The use of oxygen in leaching was investigated to increase leach kinetics. The results of leaching tests to compare using oxygen instead of air indicated that, due to the improved leach time, it was possible to reduce the number of leaching tanks from twenty four (24) to twenty (20).

"The industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)—a concept that combines sensor networks and control systems—has been employed in several industries to improve productivity and safety. NIOSH researchers are investigating IIoT applications to identify challenges of and potential solutions for transferability of IIoT from other industries to the mining industry. Specifically, NIOSH has reviewed existing sensors and communications network systems used in U.S. underground coal mines to determine whether they are capable of supporting IIoT systems. The results show that about 40% of the installed post-accident communication systems as of 2014 require minimal or no modification to support IIoT applications. NIOSH researchers also developed an IIoT monitoring and control prototype system based on low-cost microcontroller Wi-Fi boards, to detect a door opening on a refuge alternative, activate fans located inside the Pittsburgh Experimental Mine, and actuate an alarm beacon on the surface. The results of this feasibility study can be used to explore IIoT applications in underground coal mines based on existing communications and tracking infrastructure. INTRODUCTION The nation’s approach to health and safety in mining has historically been reactive in the sense that health and safety regulations and mandates have traditionally been passed as a result of tragic mining accidents. An example of this is the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006, which was passed as a result of several mining accidents where tracking of and communications with underground personnel were severely limited. While this reactive approach has led to the development and implementation of highly impactful safety interventions and safety practices, there currently exists a technological revolution that can shift the paradigm toward a proactive approach based on preventative methods: Internet of Things (IoT). IoT is the network of physical objects or ""things"" embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and connectivity to enable that network to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator, and/or other connected devices [1, 2]. It should be noted that IoT has been defined from various perspectives, and hence numerous definitions exist in the literature. The apparent ambiguity of the IoT definition might be due to the fact that IoT is syntactically composed of two terms: internet and things. The first one pushes towards a network-oriented vision, while the second tends to put the focus on generic objects. The traditional internet can be viewed as an internet of computers —i.e., “things” connected to the internet are computers only. IoT “extends” the internet by allowing other generic things that are commonly found in our daily life, such as refrigerators and cars, to be interconnected via the internet, and thus creates a bridge between the virtual word and the physical world."

The pockets of high silica blue dust across the entire high grade hematite deposits in the Bailadila sector bothers the excavation activity due their iron content, which is higher than the threshold value specified by the Indian Bureau of Mines and the agony of stacking them separately due to their fragile & powdery nature. The physical nature of blue dust and its negligible alumina content makes these a potential source of hematite, which is a blessing in disguise. As most of the particles are in the form of an independent grain making it appropriately suitable feed for dry magnetic separation and thus the dry beneficiation has turned a bane into boon by enabling to produce concentrate either suitable for using as DSO or amenable for blending. The emphasis on carrying out dry beneficiation studies in the present context serves the purpose of mineral conservation, mitigates the issues of excavation and stacking as well as conservation of water resource. This paper describes the laboratory and pilot scale dry beneficiation studies carried out on blue dust of 48 – 60%Fe and Silica up to 30% at 25 Kg/hour to 400 Kg/hour, resulting in production of concentrate assaying 60 – 65%Fe. INTRODUCTION High silica blue dust (HSBD) is associated with Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ) and is available in abundance in various pockets across the Iron ore body in the Bailadila region of Chhattisgarh state. High Silica Blue dust occurs in the form of free granular particles and also as friable lumps. The chemical quality of this falls under sub-grade category (45 – 55%Fe) and as per the guidelines of Indian Bureau of Mines, these are to be stacked and conserved as future resources of Iron if it can’t be utilized in the present circumstances. Due to its friable nature, stacking of HSBD is a challenge and it is also compounding the problem by polluting the air under high velocity wind conditions. Because of its physical nature and occurrence in pockets pose challenge to systematic mining. The existing processing set up of the operating mines is designed to treat either Direct Shipping ore (DSO) or Run-of-Mine (ROM) have grade >60% Fe. The present practice of beneficiating iron ore fines (<1 mm) comprise combination of two or more processes such as desliming, hydraulic classification, magnetic separation and flotation apart from requirement of grinding depending on liberation characteristics. The HSBD which is predominantly occur as free granular particles, is significantly low in its alumina content. This gives us an opportunity to utilize them by exploring a suitable beneficiation process so that the concentrate produced can be used as a sweetener for alumina rich iron ore/concentrate. Thus, in the present study, an attempt has been made to adopt dry high intensity magnetic separation technique to explore the amenability of the high silica blue dust for beneficiation.

"Syncrude has developed a low energy extraction process for the recovery of bitumen from oil sand. This new process operates at a temperature of 25 °C, resulting in substantially lower energy costs and lower capital costs, especially for the thermal energy generation equipment. The process will be used in Syncrude’s Aurora Mine, which is scheduled for startup in mid 2000. The flowsheet for Low Energy Extraction includes hydraulic transport of oil sand slurry, and bitumen separation using collector and frother chemicals and air as process aids. A number of flow sheet innovations and optimizations have been included, resulting in the next generation of extraction technology. Experimental pilot plant results, engineering progress to date and areas of ongoing work will be discussed. SUMMARYThe Low Energy Extraction Process has been successfully developed for commercial implementation at Aurora. The 1996 100 tonne hour Field Pilot demonstrated that the bitumen recovery target could be met with an 11.1% grade oil sand. However, pilot plant bitumen recoveries for a lower grade oil sand were not acceptable. The subsequent flowsheet optimization study led to a new flowsheet for Low Energy Extraction, which includes a primary separation vessel, a flotation circuit for PSV middlings, and the use of middlings displacement in the PSV cone bottom with flotation underflow. A test program conducted in 1997 showed that the new flowsheet could significantly improve the bitumen recoveries for lower grade oil sands. Engineering work on process scale-up led to selection of a 30 meter diameter PSV, with a tangential feedwell. The successful development and commercialization of Low Energy Extraction for the Aurora Mine Project is a major enabling step in the Syncrude 21 program. The low energy requirements of this process allow Syncrude to develop the Aurora leases more cost effectively. The use of this process results in major capital cost savings, predominantly in the thermal energy infrastructure and also provides long term operating cost advantages for Syncrude."

New technology is a significant factor in the present upsurge in world, and Australian, gold extraction and production. The main technologies in current use for gold production are described, referring to overseas developments. Areas where existing techniques have shortcomings or new methods are needed are pinpointed and discussed. Much research work on gold metallurgy is under way round the world, and many new developments have potential. Many of the current research activities round the world are covering unusual and striking areas, with surprising results starting to come through. Some of the "blue sky" techniques reportedly under investigation are identified, together with consideration of when changes in technology are of value. The consequences of new technology for personnel involved in gold plant operations will be raised, including the new education now required.

This paper outlines briefly results of seismic measurements recorded in the vicinity of quarry blasting under practical operating conditions. The data cover field work done from January to the middle of August 1930, during which time records were made of 61 blasts in 19 quarries. Of the tests made, one was in biotite-gneiss, two in dolomite, two in a flintlike volcanic complex, three in gabbrodiorite, five in trap rock, and six in limestone. One quarry was in Alabama, two were in South Carolina, two in New York, four in Kentucky, five in Connecticut, and five in Massachusetts. Explosive charges ranged from 0.30 pound to 41,900 pounds, and the method of shooting varied from mud caps through hammer and wagon drill holes to churn drill holes and coyote tunnel shots.

"Résumé - Les seules productions de columbo-tantalite en Côte d&apos;Ivoire sont effectuées dans les éluvions, colluvions et alluvions d&apos;Issia, au Centre-Ouest de la Côte d&apos;Ivoire. Même si un lien direct avec les roches granitiques est suspecté, aucune attention particulière n&apos;a été accordée à l&apos;étude de la minéralisation primaire en relation avec l&apos;évolution de ces granites et des pegmatites associées. Ces granites, qui sont en intrusion dans les roches sédimentaires du Protérozoïque inférieur, comprennent: le granite orienté à deux micas (type Lobo), le granite orienté à muscovite dominante (type Bitapia) et le granite porphyroïde non orienté à muscovite dominante (type Issia). Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les pegmatites à Nb-Ta-Be-Li sont liées au granite de type Issia. Les observations de terrain et les analyses sur roche totale montrent que: (1) les trois principaux granites de la région sont de type-S et peralumineux dans leur composition, (2) ils ont été formés pendant la période tardi- à post-Éburnéenne, (3) le granite de type Issia fut le dernier à se former.Les pegmatites liées au granite de type Issia ont été classées en quatre types : A- pegmatites stériles; B- pegmatites à Be; C- pegmatites zonées à Nb-Ta-Be; et D- pegmatites zonées à Be-Nb-Ta-Li. Les pegmatites zonées comprennent les zones suivantes: I- zone à aplite; II- zone graphique; III- zone à albite, microcline, béryl et columbo-tantalite; IV- zone à microcline massive; V- zone à quartztourmaline. Ces pegmatites présentent une zone d&apos;altération métasomatique externe.La minéralisation de Ta, Nb, et Be est liée à la zone III des pegmatites de types C et D, la minéralisation de Li est associée aux greisens qui peuvent être observés n&apos;importe où dans les pegmatites de type D. Les données de terrain et de laboratoire indiquent que le granite de type Issia est la roche parentale des pegmatites à éléments rares de la région. Les pegmatites minéralisées sont distribuées seulement autour du granite de type Issia et les patrons des terres rares des granites et ceux des pegmatites à éléments rares sont très similaires. Les analyses de la composition totale montrent un lien génétique entre le granite de type Issia et les pegmatites à éléments rares. Il est suggéré que les pegmatites ont été formées durant le transport et la cristallisation fractionnée du magma. "Over the past 40 years, Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) has executed its mission “to bring together multi-disciplined individuals and organizations to find common ground and create a shared vision and consensus voice for continual advancement in the deep foundations industry”. Like DFI, micropile technology began a significant growth path in the mid-1980s. This paper highlights how DFI’s mission was executed in the deployment and expansion of micropile technology.INTRODUCTIONMicropiles are small diameter foundation elements constructed using specialty drilling and grouting methods. Micropiles have evolved since their introduction into the North American market in the 1970s from being lightly loaded (less than 30 kips) elements used primarily for remedial applications, to today’s high-capacity, often hybridized foundation systems, for both remedial and new-build projects. Micropiles now occupy a substantial market segment in North America.For 40 years, DFI has aimed to be the forum for discussion of all issues related to deep foundations design and construction. DFI now supports 21 technical committees and working groups on all deep foundations technologies and has expanded to include regional chapters in Europe, India and the Middle East.Several key steps are required for the successful execution of DFI’s mission, including identifying a need, engaging dedicated and knowledgeable people, developing effective vehicles and resources for information sharing, cultivating stakeholder contributions and advancements, stimulating influence/impact on deep foundations market, and expanding approaches to continue progress. Pile drivers in New York City (the original organizers of DFI) positively affected their market using these same steps: they recognized a specific need, gathered the people who could affect change, convened a discussion forum (which is common today, but was innovative at the time), defined tasks to address the issues, and influenced their market by improving means, methods and owner perception of their services. These forward thinking, proactive members created a mechanism for communication among all related parties that would advance the profession by improving safety, quality and value of pile driving construction.Micropile technology has evolved in the United States and around the world for the past four decades. The accumulated efforts of DFI and other, similar organizations such as The International Association of Foundation Drilling (ADSC) have contributed to this evolution. The advancement of the micropile industry – and consequently the micropile market – has been intimately tied to the execution of the mission of DFI."

"This paper examines the impact of several key variables on the performance of flotation cells. The study makes use of a simulator for the froth phase of the flotation vessel, as the main purpose of this study is to separate the impact of different variables from one another. In experiments it is very difficult to separate the effect of variables from one another as a change in a singe input parameter, such as air rate, invariably also affects many of the other key variables, such as bubble size and bubble bursting rates.In order to achieve this a base case simulation that is typical of many of the rougher cells found in sulphide flotation circuits was carried out. Four key variables, air rate, incoming bubble size, surface bubble size and the fraction of the bubbles flowing out of the cell unburst, were varied in order to obtain the system.s response.The most significant results were obtained when the bubble size was varied. An increase in the incoming bubble size has the effect of reducing the pulp zone recovery, but increases the froth zone recovery. If it were possible to vary the incoming bubble size without influencing the overflowing bubble size, the impact of the change would be unclear because of these two competing effects. The effect of a change in the overflowing bubble size has an opposite effect on the froth recovery, with larger bubbles resulting in lower froth recoveries.A final interesting result is that all the effects examined affect the process to a similar degree, which implies that none of these variables can be disregarded, either in industry or in further research."
