The texture of an ore type is fundamental in understanding the metallurgical behaviour of an ore. This study will show examples of how quantified textural attributes (mineral shape, grain size and mineral association) can be obtained from automated and scanning electron microscope (SEM)-based microscopy and utilised using advanced image processing techniques. Examples will be shown of integrating quantified and semi-quantified meso- and macro-scale textural attributes as well as how they relate to texture-based visual logging systems. The implications of texture for processing behaviours such as comminution, liberation and recovery will be discussed. This research is part of a major collaborative geometallurgical project undertaken at the Centre of Excellence in Ore Deposits (CODES, University of Tasmania) and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC, University of Queensland). The possibility of using surfactants as wetting agents for the suppression of sulphide ore dust has been investigated. Numerous surfactants were examined to determine their characteristics and to investigate their ability to improve the wetting of the sulphide ore dust. However, the surfactants selected as suitable dust suppressors proved to have a negative effect on the flotation of the ore contaminated with such reagents. A method was developed to eliminate the detrimental influence of dust-suppressing surfactants. It consisted of surfactants adsorption on activated carbon and separation of loaded carbon prior to flotation. The technique is simple and requires minimal changes in the plant flowsheet.

1. A total of 14,413 mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Nearly half (48.9%) were sand and gravel operations, followed by stone (28.5%), coal (14.7%), nonmetal (5.7%), and metal mines (2.1%). 2. Mine operators reported 240,000 full-time equivalent workers1 (down 3.9% from 1999). Independent contractors reported 42,000 full-time equivalent workers working on mine property (up 8.6% from 1999). Coal operators accounted for 26.8% of reported employee hours, followed by stone operators (25.9%) and sand and gravel operators (12.1%). 3. Eighty-four (84) work-related mine fatalities occurred in 2000 compared to 90 the year before. •The mine fatality rate was 29.8 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers compared to a fatality rate of4.6 per 100,000 employees for all private industry. •Thirty-one percent (31%) of the fatalities occurred in underground work areas, which account for only17% of total employment. •Although the largest number of fatalities (28) occurred among miners who work for coal operators, coal contractor employees had the highest fatality rate (61.1 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers). 4.There were 10,839 nonfatal lost-time injuries reported to MSHA, occurring at a rate of 3.8 injuries per 100full-time equivalent workers, and resulting in a total of 417,918 lost workdays.2 •Among all employees,3 the highest injury rate occurred among coal operator employees (5.6 nonfatal injuries per 100 full-time equivalent workers). •The highest percentage (34.7%) of nonfatal lost-time injuries were due to handling materials (e.g., over-exertion in lifting, pulling, or pushing objects), which also accounted for the greatest percentage of lost workdays (29.3%). •Among the most frequently occurring injuries, the most severe (as measured by the median number of days lost) were associated with accidents involving falls of ground, the use of powered haulage, and slips or falls. •The most frequently reported part of the body injured was the back (22.9% of all injuries). Back injuries accounted for the highest percentage of lost workdays (21.6%). 5.Seven hundred sixty-seven (767) cases of occupational illness were reported to MSHA. •The most frequently reported illness was repetitive trauma, resulting in joint, tendon, or muscle inflammation or irritation (37.3%). •There were 155 (20.2%) illnesses reported as hearing loss. The majority (68.4%) of hearing loss cases occurred among surface workers. •Coal workers' pneumoconiosis accounted for 14.5% of reported illnesses.

Laboratory batch flotation tests were conducted to determine the viability of the Bureau of Mines coal-pyrite flotation process in desulfurizing various coals from the midwestern coalfields. Nine coals obtained from western Kentucky and Illinois were used in the study. In addition to the Bureau's coal-pyrite flotation process, some of the coals were subjected to two-stage rougher-cleaner coal flotation for comparison. The results of this work showed that up to a 70-percent pyritic sulfur reduction could be obtained by flotation and that the Bureau's coal-pyrite flotation was superior to rougher-cleaner coal flotation. Because many of the coals retained far too much sulfur even after second-stage flotation treatment, it was concluded that these midwestern coals are more difficult to desulfurize by flotation than are the Appalachian coals tested in earlier Bureau experiments.

In 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 34,680-acre Lime Canyon Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-231) to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The Wilderness Study Area is in Clark County, NV, about 30 air miles southwest of Mesquite, NV. The area studied contains an estimated 44 million tons of indicated subeconomic resources of gypsum, an inferred subeconimic resource of limestone and dolomite, and occurrences of gold, copper, uranium, and zeolite. The Wilderness Study Area is underlain chiefly by carbonate rocks with lesser amounts of sandstone and shale. Metamorphic, granitic, and volcanic rocks also crop out within the area. Large portions of the area are overlain by alluvium. The Wilderness Study Area is within the Gold Butte mining district. Several gold mines with past production are nearby to the south of the Wilderness Study Area; one mine is reported in operation on a small scale. The feed ore is the concentrate of low intensity magnetic separation of pyrite tailings, containing TFe47.47%, S19.41% and SiOpyrrhotite. The exploratory tests showed that using a process of flotation followed by magnetic separation could respectively obtain a sulphur concentrate of S 31.08% with a recovery of 82.89%, and an iron concentrate of TFe 59.97% and S 9.52%with a recovery of 30.93%. The reason of iron concentrates with high sulphur grade was that the sulphur grade of flotation tailings was 7.03%. So enhanced flotation for pyrrhotite was investigated in this research. Results show that when the natural pH of ore pulp varied from 5.5 to 6.0, a reagent combination of FS, LH, and BJ displayed the optimum flotation performance for pyrrhotite. After comparisons made on different flotation processing, the previous flotation flow of ?one roughing, one cleaning, one scavenging system and middling reprocessing?, was found, among others, to have the best flotation effect, as the grade and recovery of sulphur concentrate were 31.08% and 82.89%, respectively, and sulphur content of the flotation tailings was 7.03%. The above results indicated it was difficult to raise further the effect of flotation desulphurization. The authors therefore suggested that oxidizing roast should be adopted following the magnetic process for the purpose of further desulphurization. Besides, flue gas containing SO2 8.25%. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated a hydrothermal sulfidation (HTS) and chloride leaching procedure to recover lead and silver from plumbojarosite. The plumbojarosite, generated during pressure-oxidative leaching of zinc concentrate in a commercial operation, contained, in percent, 25.4 Pb, 18.8 Fe, 1.4 Zn, 29.5 sulfate (S042.), 3.2 elemental sulfur (SO), 13.4 total S, and 7.4 tr oz/st Ag. The HTS was conducted in an autoclave and converted the plumbojarosite into amorphous iron oxide and liberated the Pb and Ag as sulfides (S2) The best operating conditions were 50 g of plumbojarosite and 7 pct So (2.04 g So added) in 500 mL of 2.0-mol/L NH3 at 150° C for 1 h. The sulfidation product contained, in percent, 37 Pb, 28 Fe, 2 S042., 7 total S, and 11.2 tr oz/st Ag. Flotation of the sulfidation product was conducted at pH 3 with 15-pct pulp density and 2.4lb/st of isopropyl xanthate as collector. The flotation concentrate contained 43 pct Pb, 25 pct Fe, and 13 tr oz/st Ag. FeCl3 leaching of the sulfidation product in a resin kettle extracted 98 pct Pb and 97 pct Ag from the sulfidation product, and HCI-Oz leaching in a shaker glass bottle extracted 99 pct Pb and 98 pct Ag. Both leach residues met the Environmental Protection Agency's Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (EPA-TCLP) standards for nonhazardous wastes. The HTS and chloride leaching procedure is a potentially effective method for detoxification of plumbojarosite-bearing residue from the zinc pressure-leaching circuit.

"The town of Monson in Piscutaquis County, Maine is the, center of an important site industry. Monson slate has a nation-wide reputation, particularly for electrical switch boards, and the deposits have been worked for the manufacture of such products for many years. Open-pit quarrying is the method most commonly employed in obtaining slate. Underground methods have been used in the Peaon Bottom district near Delta, Pennsylvania, but the quarries that were thus operated are now abandoned. Underground methods have been used more extensively in foreign countries, the most famous example being the slate mines at Angers in France, where an over-head stoping method has been employed successfully for many it is only under special conditions that underground methods can be successfully used. If the deposit is wide and relatively thin, or if the material is too unsound to constitute a safe roof, open-pit methods must be used, for slate is too low-priced a commodity to justify the heavy expense of any timbering methods. It is only where the deposit is relatively narrow, of great depth, and sufficiently sound to afford a strong roof that ordinary mining may be employed.The best slate beds in two of the three quarries operated at Monson are no worked by underground methods. The chief bed worked by the Portland Monson Slate Co. is 10 feet thick, stands vertical and strikes N. 63º F. The slaty cleavage is vertical and crosses the strike of the beds at an angle of 5 to 10°. The grain or second direction of splitting is vertical and perpendicular to the cleavage. In addition to the 10-foot bed, to 2-foot beds and one 5-foot bed are available but are not now utilized. In the Monson Maine Slate Co. quarry (the old Pond quarry),a greater number of beds available, but at present quarrying is confined to a single bed about 9 feet thick which dips 30º S.E. and strikes N. 47ºF. The slaty cleavage is vertical and strides N. 45º F., while the grain strikes N. 45-50º W. and is also vertical."

"In 2016, the estimated value of total nonfuel mineral production in the United States was $74.6 billion, a slight increase from the revised total of $73.4 billion in 2015 (Table 1). Increased construction activity spurred increased production of industrial minerals, especially those used in infrastructure and residential construction. Although starting the year relatively low, prices for several metals, especially for some of the precious metals, began to trend upward. Decreased production of most metals produced in the United States, however, contributed to an overall decline in the value of metal production.Several U.S. metal mines and processing facilities were idled or closed permanently in 2016, including iron ore mines in Michigan and Minnesota; three primary aluminum smelters in Indiana, Missouri and Washington; one secondary zinc smelter in North Carolina; a titanium sponge facility in Utah and titanium mineral operations in Virginia. In addition, in May, the weekly average rig count for oil and gas drilling reached its lowest level since the 1940s when that measurement was first recorded. The reduced drilling activity resulted in decreased production of some industrial mineral products used in the drilling sector. Trends in mineral-related sectors of the domestic economy declined or held steady, except in the manufacturing of nonmetallic mineral products and nonferrous metals excluding aluminum, which increased. Overall, mining trended downward as the result of significant declines in coal mining, oil and gas extraction and metal mining (Table 2). Discussion of mine production is frequently segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. "In this work, the kinetics of ferric-ferrous redox reaction on a passivated sphalerite electrode is studied by the application of chronoamperometry method in 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution. The electrochemical behaviour of ferric and ferrous couple was investigated on two sphalerite minerals acquired from two different geological regions (Iran and Canada). The carbon paste electrode (CPE) of sphalerite was initially prepared and passivated in 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution and after reaching the steady-state condition, ferric and ferrous sulfate solution was added. The registered current density differences between the current density of the passivated electrode and that of the electrode in the iron salts added solution were interpreted for kinetics of ferric-ferrous reduction-oxidation reaction. The equilibrium potential for ferric-ferrous couple on sphalerites surface was about 500 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. The exchange current density (i0) for ferric-ferrous redox reactions on the sphalerite samples had the same magnitude of 10–6 A cm–2. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements at 550 mV vs. Ag/AgCl illustrated that sphalerite oxidation was controlled by two charge transfer process in both of Fe-free and Fe-containing solutions. The charge transfer resistance remarkably decreased when Fe salts added to the 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution, owing to the ferric-ferrous redox reactions being the predominant reactions on sphalerite surface.INTRODUCTION Direct atmospheric leaching processes for sphalerite concentrates are performed by reduction of an oxidant (e.g. ferric ion and oxygen) and oxidation of sphalerite to zinc ions. Heavy media separation (HMS) is one of the most widely used gravity methods in the mineral industry. The feed is separated, according to the specific gravities, into two products; float (light) and sink (heavy) particles. The universal acceptance of the process is due to simplicity, efficiency and robustness for ease of control. However, if optimum separation is desired during the operation of heavy media plants, a delicate balance of a number of variables is essential. Among the variables, the two which are generally the most frequently checked and controlled are specific gravity and consistency of the medium. The latter is a function of the settling rate of the media. The medium is generally made up of finely ground ferrosilicon, magnetite, galena, shale, quartz sand, clay contaminants and water. The frequently present clay in the medium acts as a stabilizing agent, since the coarse heavy medium solids (called media) would quickly settle if they were mixed only in water. Clay concentration of the medium varies between 3-7% by height (1,2). Although clay is essential for reasonable media stability, clay concentration greater than 7-8% imparts too high a viscosity to the medium, and the feed cannot accurately stratify and therefore separate into the required products. To be on the safe side, plant operators clean the medium from most of the clays, and would rather work at a lower stability than have a very viscous medium on their hands. The most recent advance in the area of consistency control rlas made by the introduction of atomized (spherical) ferrosilicon (3). This extended the upper limit of the use of ground ferrosilicon from 3.3 to approximately 3.6, broadening the range of the optimum operating conditions. A viscosity control method was also worked out by the use of low cost additives which lower viscosity while retaining a favorable low setting rate (4). "INTRODUCTION The BeVan quartz crystal prospect in the Indian Creek mining district of Lemhi County, west-central Idaho, was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines 3/ on July 9, 1943. As quartz crystals possessing peizoelectric properties were on the critical list of strategic war minerals, further exploration of the deposit was recommended. The Bureau of Mines exploration began in December 1943 and continued through January 1944. Additional trenching was completed during May and June 1944. This report presents the data obtained by this exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. In this research, in order to predict the peak particle velocity (PPV)(as vibration indicator) caused by blasting projects in the excavations of the Karoun III power plant and dam, three techniques including statistical, empirical, and neural network were used and their results were interpreted and compared. First, multivariate regression analysis (MVRA) was used as statistical approach. Next, PPV was predicted using some widely used empirical models. Lastly, an artificial neural network was used. In the ANN model, maximum charge per delay, total charge per round, distance from blast site, direction of firing, blasthole length, number of blastholes, total delay in milliseconds, number of delay intervals, and average specific charge were taken into consideration as input parameters and consequently the PPV as output parameter. The results of the techniques were interpreted from two points of view. Firstly, the correlation between the observed data and predicted ones, secondly the total error between observed data and predicted ones. The MVRA had a satisfactory correlation but its error of estimation was comparatively very high. The empirical model had reliable correlation and a small error of estimation; in total the results of empirical method were more reliable than those of MVRA. Generally, the ANN approach showed very high correlation and a very small error. The results of this research indicated that the ANN model is the best predicting model for PPV in comparison with other approaches.

Currently, deep foundation designs for the service limit state are deterministic in nature. The settlements and lateral deflections of deep foundations are calculated by means of numerical techniques whereby the foundation-soil interactions are characterized by discrete load transfer curves such as t-z or p-y curves. The noted deficiency of the deterministic approach is that the uncertainties arising from various sources, such as soil properties and model errors are not considered. To address this deficiency, a performance-based reliability design methodology is developed using Monte Carlo statistical methods. The performance based design criteria are defined in terms of the specified allowable displacement. The input to the numerical solution techniques, including the soil strength parameters, unit weight of the soil are relevant to the generation of the load transfer curves are treated as random field. The well established random field generator algorithm, local averaging subdivision, is used to generate random samples of input, where the mean values, variances, the probability distribution, and correlation structures are required statistical parameters for these random variables. The objective of the performance based reliability design is to determine the optimized foundation dimensions so that the probability of failure is less than the target probability of failure. The probability of failure by the Monte Carlo approach is simply the ratio of the number of unsatisfactory performance to the sample size. A numerical example for laterally loaded drilled shaft is given to illustrate the application of the methodology. The incorporation of the correlation length is shown to be critical for properly accounting for the site soil spatial variability.

There are still a number of copper smelters in the world using the roasting and smelting process flow diagram for treating sulphide raw materials. The technical, economic and environmental performance indicators of such operations are inferior to the respective indicators of advanced processes. First of all with respect to copper and sulphur recovery: 95% and 75% as compared with 98% and over 90%, respectively. Based on the studies of the single-stage smelting process to produce white metal and blister copper conducted during recent years an analysis of the feasibility of roastingsmelting technology improvement was carried out in the Gintsvetmet Institute to substantially increase the copper and sulphur recoveries. On the basis of this analysis, it was proposed to modernize the technology and equipment within the framework of the existing process flow-sheet. The proposed modernization implies an increase in the roasting temperature; higher desulphurization degree in the process of roasting; a number of modifications in the roaster design depending on the particular conditions of a given operation; addition of lime flux to the feed charge to roasting; and transition to combined calcium-silicate smelting slags. The metallurgical and energy computations made have indicated that the proposed modifications of the technology will improve the copper and sulphur recovery up to 98% and 90%, respectively. The required capital investments have been estimated using as an example a particular copper smelter, the payback period determined taking into consideration additional output, fuel saving and a reduction in fines for sulphur emissions. For comparison, the capital cost of a smelter modernization is given for change-over to basically new autogenous Ausmelt, Outokumpu and V anyukov smelting technologies.

Those who have had an occasion to apply geostatistics to the estimation of ore reserves are familiar with the conventional approaches of estimating average grade of quality values for arrays of regular grid squares or blocks. Further, the technology to perform geostatistical analysis and prediction for irregular two-dimensional areas has been available in a practical, readily useable form for some time. However, the generalization of this technology into three dimensions has been hampered by lack of a suitable geometrical characterization for realistic, three dimensional shapes and volumes. The extension of these estimation techniques into three dimensions has now been made possible by a successful integration of the volume modelling capabilities of 3D Component Modelling with proven 3D Geostatistical Techniques. The result is a powerful new technique for mineral ore reserves estimation in a practical, useable form. The technique allows direct geostatistical estimation of grade and quality values for precisely defined, irregular, realistic, geological, and mining shapes or volumes. This paper describes the two technologies, their integration and their application in practice to the estimation of mineral ore reserves. The paper closes with a discussion of the benefits provided by the new approach, in terms of accuracy, efficiency and practicality.

A reliability based analysis method for a drilled shaft stabilized slope system is presented in this paper. In the past effort, a deterministic method using the limiting equilibrium method of slices for determining the global factor of safety of a slope reinforced by a row of drilled shafts was developed using the soil arching concept. The drilled shaft stabilization mechanisms for the slope were treated as the drilled shaft induced soil arching, which reduces the driving forces on the down slope side of the drilled shaft. The effect of drilled shafts induced soil arching on the reduction of the driving stresses in the limiting equilibrium slope stability analysis was quantified by the load transfer factor through extensive finite element simulation studies. A semi-empirical equation was also developed for expressing the load transfer factor as a function of the soil properties, including strength parameters and unit weight as well as the slope geometry and soil profile, the location and spacing of the drilled shaft, and the dimension of the drilled shaft. However, due to the inherent uncertainties of the soil properties and the model error of the semi-empirical load transfer equation, a modification of the deterministic method into a probabilistic method is developed in this paper. The Monte Carlo statistical method is used to generate random variables for the soil strength parameters based on the prescribed probability characteristics, including mean, COV, and the probability distribution function. In addition, the modeling error of the load transfer factor is also treated as a random variable in the Monte Carlo simulation method, in which the mean, COV, and probability distribution function for the bias of the semi-empirical equation are used. The developed theories were coded into a computer program for analyzing complex slope geometry and slope profile conditions. Two examples are shown in the paper to illustrate the analysis results of the developed probability approach for determining the reliability of a drilled shaft stabilized slope system.

"Reverse cationic flotation is a very efficient method of beneficiation of oxidized iron ores when you need to separate hematite and quartz. This method can be also applied to reduce silica content in the magnetite concentrates obtained by wet low-intensity magnetic separation. However, cationic flotation in this case is less effective due to the presence of Fe-Mg-Al-bearing silicates as amphiboles in magnetite ores. These silicates are concentrated in magnetic products and determine the difficulties of their separation from iron oxides when amines and starches are used as collectors and depressants, respectively. The recalculation of the results of the electron microprobe analysis of three calcic Fe-Mg-Al-bearing amphiboles used to characterize cation distributions in structural units and to obtain structural formulas in accord with stoichiometric limits was conducted. The Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to examine the validity of the empirical estimation of cation distributions in amphiboles. The studied samples are metamorphic pargasite and ferrotschermakite and volcanic magnesiohornblende. The crystallographic analyses of the amphibole samples exhibited their heterogeneous surfaces explaining worse floatability of amphiboles with dodecylamine at pH 10. The electrokinetic measurements showed that the position of the isoelectric point of amphiboles is related to a substitution of Al3+ for Si4+ in tetrahedral sites and to an amount of Mg2+ cations in octahedral sites. Thus, the dodecylamine adsorption onto amphiboles through electrostatic interactions is mainly affected by a distribution of these cations in tetrahedral and octahedral sites of amphiboles. In addition, the effect of starch on the depression of Fe-Mg-Al-bearing amphiboles during flotation can be attributed to the presence of metal ions on the amphibole surface, which are capable of forming strong chemical complexes with starch molecules."

Low temperature and high-temperature calorimetric measurements were made by the Federal Bureau of Mines on high-purity samples of Re02(s) and Re03(s) to determine heat capacities and enthalpies. The temperature range of heat capacity measurements was 5 to 310 K for Re02 and 8 to 309 K for Re03. High-temperature enthalpy measurements alone were determined for pure Re207(s,1). The derived standard entropies are S°298 = 11.43±0.01 cal/deg mole for Re02(s) and S298 = 16.55±0.02 cal/deg mole for Re03(s). High-temperature enthalpy equations expressed in calories per mole are as follows: Re02 (s) , H-H298.15 = 16.002T + 1.600 X 10-3T2 + 3.522 X 105T-1 - 6,095 (298 to 1,400 K); Re03 (s) , H-H298.15 = 20.293T + 3.238 X 10-3T2 + 3.950 X 105 T-1 - 7,664 (298 to 1,000 K); Re207 (s) , H-H298.15 = 38.437T + 10.309 X 10-3T2 + 4.315 X 105 T-1 - 13,824 (298 to 413 K); Re207 (s) , H-H298.15 = 30.181 + 17.713 X 10-3T2 - 10,612 (413 to 600 K) ; Re207 (1) , H-H298.19 = 66.101T - 10,092 (600 to 700 K). Gibbs energy of formation (?Gf°) data and related functions over the temperature ranges investigated are tabulated for the three oxides.

THE QUARTETTE Mine near Searchlight, NV, a mine that first operated in the 1890s, could begin processing ore again by September. Jetco Enterprises Inc. plans to work through the tailings and ore close to the surface followed by plans for an openpit mine. It is one of at least three new mining efforts in the region, the Associated Press reported. Another is north of Searchlight, with yet another across the Colorado River in Arizona, east of Bullhead City. Gold mining is rare in southern Nevada. The area generally lacks the rock type that contains gold deposits. Restrictions on federal wilderness areas and protections for the desert tortoise also play a role. Gold veins in the region are generally small and erratic in length and height, Bill Durbin, a geologist and chief of southern Nevada operations for the Nevada Division of Minerals told the Associated Press. L.R. Tad Tinnell, president of Jetco Enterprises, has long eyed the mine. From 1993 to 1995, he explored and drilled on the property, which was still owned by Searchlight Mercantile.
