CHAIRMAN EMRICK: We have a very interesting program this morning, of a mechanical nature, and I am sure you will all be very much interested in it. At the conclusion of each paper there will be time given for discussion, and we will be glad to have all of you enter into the discussion. Before we start the program, I want to ask the men who have been appointed chairmen of committees to come and get these folios, which contain papers concerning their particular committees. The Nominations Committee, of which David Brown is chairman, has a folio here. It has been customary every year to have a photograph of those in attendance taken, and I presume it is the will of those in attendance this morning to have their pictures taken. We plan to do that about a quarter of twelve, approximately, this morning in the room instead of going outside as we have heretofore. Frank Miller has an interesting an¬nouncement to make. Ash is a material that many people leave to nature to handle. Others sometimes sweep it under the rug to be disposed of by someone else. In our business we cannot do either. In fact the American Electric Power System spends many millions of dollars in plant investment costs to collect the material, and then many more millions to dispose it. In 1965 alone the coal fired steam generating plants in., the AEP System produced approximately 2,400,000 tons of ash, enough to fill 40,000 coal cars which would extend as a single train across the entire states of Ohio and Indiana. Even though our present ash production is large, this is only the beginning when we forecast the future growth of our system. By 1980 it is estimated that our generating capacity will expand to about three times its present size, and with coal as our primary source of fuel our ash production will increase proportionately to about 7 million tons a year.

The Bureau of Mines performed drill calibration tests on two industrial percussive drills of 2-5/8- and 3-1/2-inch piston diameters to determine operating characteristics for their use in conjunction with penetration rate data in developing drillability equations and furthering the knowledge of percussive drills. The use of a linear velocity transducer for measuring piston velocities and application of its instrumentation are described. Data presented include relationships between maximum piston velocity and feed air pressure other results confirm the theory or data of previous investigators, and some comparisons are made with the performance prediction formulas of other investigators.

Technology to enhance safety during mine hoisting has been developed by researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Assessment of current hoisting technology suggests that monitoring conveyance position and load directly from the skip or cage top offers several significant safety advantages. Wireless data transmission schemes and a package consisting of sensors, batteries, and a charger mounted on the wire rope and skip have been developed. A state-of-the-art automated hoisting test facility was constructed to test the concept in a controlled laboratory setting. Field tests in a full-size shaft are underway.

(Canal Zone Meeting, November, 1910.) A DEPOSIT of manganese-ore near Tucson, Ariz., merits notice by reason of the peculiar form in which it occurs, and as a striking. example of ore-deposition by vadose upward capillary flow of metal-bearing solutions with concentration at the surface of the country-rock. This deposit occurs at the northern end of the Coyote mountains, about 40 miles west of Tucson, upon the outcropping beds of porphyritic rock, which appear to be partly-metamorphosed strata of volcanic tufa, probably of late Secondary or of Tertiary age. The strata dip northward at a low angle, and present a series of basset-edges in parallel lines of outcrop, east and west, facing the south and extending over many acres. Successive groups of these outcrops, from 5 to 20 ft. in breadth, are coated with oxides of manganese in lustrous black films and crusts, shining in the sunlight like polished ebony, and covering the whole surface of the rock above the soil. Seen at a little distance, these croppings look like solid ledges of massive and pure ore; but closer inspection and a few blows of the hammer reveal their true nature as a superficial coating allied in origin to the blackened shining surface of rocks exposed in desert-regions, familiarly known as " desert paint" or "desert varnish,"' similar to the phenomena described by me in a former paper, but much thicker and heavier. * By reason of the death of the distinguished author, this communication, probably his last communication to technical literature, is published without revision of the proofs by him. Following the preparation of tantalum oxide and carbide (1) an investigation of the details relating to the production of tantalum metal powder was planned. From the literature (2) it was evident that tantalum could be produced either by reduction of potassium tantalum fluoride with an alkali metal or by electrolysis of a fused salt mixture containing a tantalum compound. The latter method appeared to be the more suitable and, as there was considerable divergence of opinion in the literature as to the nature of the reactions involved, it was decided to study the electrolytic process. The ultimate aim in any case was to produce tantalum pOWder for use in an investigation of the problems relating to the preparation of consolidated tantalum.FACTORS GOVERNING ELECTROLYSISAfter a few preliminary exploratory electrolyses several factors which needed amplification were revealed. These will be mentioned before the details of the electrolysis experiments are given.COMPOSITION OF THE BATHWithout the knowledge gained in the preliminary experiments it would be thought that the best material for the bath would be that one which underwent electrolytic decomposition. Consider what at first appeared the most likely - namely - potassium tantalum fluoride. The melting point of K2TaF7 was determined to be 630°C with volatilization and decomposition taking place at that temperature so that it would not have been very satisfactory.

This report presents the results of an initial investigation into some problems resulting from the use of assays representing unequal sample interval lengths and the use of the weighted average grade of ore in evaluating bedded mineral deposits . A mathematical proof and examples are given to show that the unweighted and weighted assay averages are equivalent when there is no correlation between assay value and sample interval length but that these averages are different when there is correlation between assay value and sample interval length . The amount of this difference between estimates is a function of the degree of correlation . One set of sample and assay data , based on 11 stratigraphic sections of the Phosphoria formation in Idaho , indicates that the relationship between the amount of difference between estimates and the correlation factor is approximately linear . If this correlation relationship can be established , within acceptable limits of precision , as a consistent attribute of deposits , the estimate of weighted average grade of ore could be predicted directly from the unweighted estimate of grade of ore by using the relationship as a prediction factor . Randomness tests on the sample and assay data from the Phosphoria formation , using the mean - square - successive - difference method , indicate that correlation between assay value and sample interval length ( each sample interval length represents an individual bed or stratum of the formation ) , apparently has little effect on the independence between successive assays , between successive sample interval lengths , and between the products of assays and sample interval lengths . Therefore , these data can be analyzed statistically as long as the original sample sections have been selected at random for sampling .

In 1975 bituminous coal and lignite production in the United States reached an all-time high of 637 million tons, an increase of 6 percent over production in 1974. The output, valued at $11.9 billion f.o.b. mines, was produced at 5,100 mines in 24 states (6). Coal mining is the largest mining industry in Alabama. Production from Alabama's mines in 1975 was over 21 million tons, and present projections forecast a steady increase in production, with tonnages almost doubling by 1985 (5). Of the total quantity of coal produced, about 16 million tons were consumed in electric power generation and the remainder was used for metallurgical coke production, extraction of chemicals and petroleum based products, and power for industry. The fact that 75 percent of Alabama's power is generated by burning coal attests to the importance of this fossil fuel to the State. Approximately 14 million tons of coal were produced by strip-mining methods in Alabama during 1975 and about 7 million tons were produced by underground mining during the same period. Surface mining is expected to continue at about 14 million tons per year, but by 1980 underground coal mining is expected to increase to about 25 million tons (3). About 7 million tons of surface-mined coal in Alabama is subjected to some means of washing or cleaning. The methods used are screening accompanied by heavy media separation, jigging, tabling and flotation. Some of the simpler approaches employ screening and jigging, or tabling. Except where flotation is used, the screen undersize fraction (finer than 0.25 inch) is rejected, with the result that 10 to 15 percent of the coal is lost. Thus, in the State of Alabama an aggregate of about 1 million tons of coal is wasted annually in the fines which are impounded from treatment of surface-mined coal. The use of the Humphreys spiral to concentrate fine coal was practiced as early as 1947. At that time the Hudson Coal Company (1) used Humphreys spirals to concentrate anthracite fines. IN the art of cementation a controversy has been going on for years as to whether solid or gaseous carbon is the active agent in carburizing steel. More recently opinion has crystallized into a compromise to the effect that carburizing is a gaseous cementation of steel in the presence of solid carbon. The importance of this theory has a particular bearing upon the work to be described. In the art of carburizing, use is commonly made of such words as "catalytic," "atomic," "nascent" and "activated;" in an attempt to describe the process. These words are used indiscriminately. For, instance, the gas is said to be "catalytic" and carbon to be "nascent," or vice versa. In using these expressions, investigators are confirming the acceptance in their minds of the active conditions of both gas and carbon in the cementation process.

This paper attempts to highlight some of the problems encountered in the economic exploitation of the deeper coal seams by opencast mining methods. The major cost elements of three methods of overburden removal are examined in relation to the overall cost of winning coal from deeper-lying coal seams. The three overburden removal methods examined are dragline stripping and two systems combining dragline stripping with shovels and trucks at varying depths of overburden. A dragline is, undoubtedly, the most cost effective system of overburden removal for depths of up to 30 metres but it is suggested that, when dealing with incremental overburden depths in excess of 30 metres, engineers should consider carefully the possibility of using a shovel and truck operation, or other system, to augment the use of a dragline.

"This paper presents a technical description of an experimental procedure developed for the geotechnical characterization of granular soils conditioned for EPB tunneling using a modified direct shear box. As the main concerning parameters of the conditioned soil mass were their undrained properties, in order to preserve its pseudo-fluid characteristics, a watertight direct shear apparatus was constructed. A comparison between the results obtained under dry, saturated and conditioned conditions is presented. INTRODUCTION EPB shield machines have been used for tunneling excavation in many different types of soils thanks to the use of soil conditioning agents. These modify the properties of the soil into that of a plastic paste, thus permitting the homogeneous flow of the excavated soil from the tunnel face through the bulk chamber, the screw conveyor and finally the conveyor belt. Moreover this technique allows controlling the face pressure and its regulation in the bulk chamber, preventing water inflow when tunneling below the water table. Further advantages are a drop of the cutter head and screw conveyor torque and reduction of the friction between metallic parts and the soil, consequently reducing wear phenomena (Merritt & Mair, 2006; Vinai et al., 2007; Borio et al., 2010; Thewes & Budach, 2010; Herrenknecht et al., 2011; Barbero et al., 2012; Peila, 2014). Several studies have investigated the possibility of conditioning and the chemical materials to be used in different types of soils, mainly subdivided into three groups: cohesionless soils (sand and gravel), silts and clays, and rock masses. This various researches have set up several laboratory procedures for these achievements before and after soil conditioning, as stated in Thewes & Budach (2010) and Peila (2014) (for cohesionless soils), in Thewes & Burger (2005), Hollmann & Thewes (2013), Zumsteg et al.(2012) (for clay), in Peila et al. (2013) and Martinelli et al. (2015a) (for rock mass). Such tests should be simple to execute, reliable and easy to interpret at the in-situ excavation step. The reduction of shear strength is necessary in EPB operations, since it allows an effective transmission of the pressure from the material itself to the front. In some cases the slump is not sufficient to return a reliable result on the shear strength reduction, as in some cases some materials are behaving differently. Therefore this research is aimed to study this aspect more in detail, in order to show the effectiveness of the soil conditioning process on the material to be excavated."

THE importance of aluminum-silicon alloys in the light alloy field is now generally recognized. Where silicon was once considered detrimental to the properties of aluminum, useful alloys now contain as much as 13 per cent. Furthermore, silicon is present as an impurity in aluminum of even the purest grades. Iron is another important impurity in aluminum and like silicon is found in small quantities in the purest aluminum available today. The manner of occurrence of iron and silicon in commercially pure aluminum and many of its alloys exerts, a very pronounced influence upon their properties. The effect of large quantities of iron in aluminum-silicon alloys is so detrimental that it has been found necessary to limit the allowable maximum percentage to as low a figure as is consistent with quantity production and satisfactory physical properties. The intimate relation existing between iron and silicon in aluminum and aluminum alloys makes necessary a more complete knowledge of this ternary system. This paper is divided into two principal parts, dealing respectively with aluminum-silicon solubility equilibria and the constitution of aluminum-iron-silicon alloys.

A Retomadora de Minério 342-RE-001 da Anglo American é um equipamento fundamental para a homogeneização do minério, porém este equipamento apresentava problemas de performance operacional desde início da operação da Planta Industrial de Barro Alto. Em agosto de 2015, as equipes de Engenharia e Manutenção realizaram um levantamento de todas as intervenções feitas no equipamento desde o início da operação em 2012, classificando estas intervenções em seis grupos, utilizando as ferramentas da metodologia Lean Six Sigma. Desta forma, foi possível realizar o Retrofit da roda de caçambas, manutenção geral nos rastelos, trucks e na lógica de automação que eram os sistemas que mais impactavam na estabilidade e disponibilidade física do equipamento.

The mining industry, both here and internationally, is continually developing increasingly sophisticated software to compute mineral resource estimates, but these processes cannot compensate for a flawed geological interpretation of the geology of the economic commodity(s) concentrations. Quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) is becoming increasingly common in association with the sampling and assaying practices within the industry. However, it is rare in the case of a geological interpretation associated with mineral resource estimation. Why? In the context of this paper, QA/QC relates to the use of statistical and graphical tools to show that the geological economic commodity concentrations have been appropriately domained. Domaining is essential to improve the chance of getting a mineral resource estimate right. Commodity value and acceptable concentration variation within a mineral resource can be ingredients that make mineral resource estimation difficult to get right. But it is possible to get it right a very high proportion of the time. It is more likely to occur when inappropriate data consolidation is minimised. In any case, inappropriate data consolidation is significantly reduced when the geological interpretation is strongly consistent with the data and it is demonstrable. To achieve quality global estimates of geological domain concentrations, it is essential that the geology of the prospect is understood sufficiently that the deposit is appropriately domained. Appropriate domaining occurs when sample populations are separated in such a way that only data in harmony with each other within the population contributes to the domain's concentration estimate. The paper will use four brief case studies to illustrate how QA/QC can be used to display data and validate the underpinning geological interpretation through its associated domaining to get it right when it comes to a mineral resource estimation.

The Bureau of Mines has examined selected deposits of titanium minerals throughout the United States. The titaniferous magnetite deposits in the western San Gabriel Mountains, Los Angeles County, Calif., were among those selected for study, and in 1956-58 field work was conducted to determine the extent and character of the titaniferous magnetite deposits occurring in the area. This report describes this work and summarizes earlier work in the area by the Bureau and others. The titaniferous magnetite occurs disseminated as seams and lenticular pods in an anorthosite belt 4 to 6 miles wide that trends about. N. 80° W., extending from sec. 13, T. 3 N., R. 12 W., to the west boundary of R. 14 W., at which point the titaniferous magnetite-bearing rocks disappear beneath the sediments in the Santa Clara River Valley.

"The Cash is one of the largest porphyry copper-molybdenum Deposits found in Yukon to date. It is 80 km northwest of Carmacks, within the unglaciated portion of the Dawson Range, and is associated with the Big Creek fault, an important tectonic feature. Part of the mineralized zone is blanketed by up to 70 m of alluvial drift . The remainder is covered by a relatively thin residual soil layer. The mineralized zone, however, was not detected by conventional stream-sediment sampling because pathfinder elements, such as Cu and Mo, have not been geochemically dispersed into the main drainage system. The deposit was discovered by a combination of soil analysis and inspection of rock fragments from small pits.Twenty widely spaced, shallow drill holes have outlined an areaover 2700 m long and 550 to over 1000m wide that grades more than 0.1% copper equivalent (% CuE = % Cu + (5 x % MoS2)). Two smaller zones grading over 0.4% copper equivalent occur within the larger area. The limits of the widest end of the deposit have not been delineated.The Cash deposit is fairly typical of high-level, calc-alkaline porphyry copper-molydenum occurrrences in the Canadian Cordillera {cf, CIM Special Volume 15) and is representative of most prospects in the Dawson Range. It is associated genetically with a subvolcanic complex of small, irregular stocks and dykes of feldspar porphyry and related breccias of Late Cretaceous age. Copper and molybdenum sulphides occur along fractures, in quartz veinlets and disseminated in feldspar porphyry and in older metasedimentary and intrusive rocks. Higher-grade zones of copper and molybdenum have associated potassic alteration. Phyllic alteration is, in part, superimposed on potassic alteration. Argillic alteration occurs locally.This paper describes the history of the discovery and the geochemical and geophysical characteristics, together .with the regional geology, and the nature and distribution of the host rocks, hypogene mineralization and hydrothermal alteration."

This discussion is concerned with those com-J- paratively infrequent bumps that eject material from the failed mass with enough energy to wreck heavy machinery and seriously injure or kill people. In such cases there is a loud report, and the pressure waves set up in the mine atmosphere wreck ventilation controls several hundred feet from the site of the failure. Vibrations are induced in the earth's crust which may be detected several miles from the point of origin, and explosive gases may be released in large quantities." Usually a dense suspension of dust is produced from the failed mass, together with dust placed in suspension by the resulting air blast. These rock bursts or bumps have also been called mountain shots, bounces, pillar bursts, and crumps. Such occurrences, when extensive, are serious catastrophes, and may force abandonment of the mine.' CAUSES OF ROCK BURSTS Rock bursts in coal mines have occurred in sev-eral places under diverse geological conditions, mining methods, and/or practices. A study of many such occurrences indicates that they depend on the following conditions: 1) cover thickness of 500 ft or more, 2) cover composed of strong members and having a strong member lying close to or on the coal bed, and 3) a floor that does not readily heave. The minimum thickness of cover under which coal mine rock bursts occur is based on observation. Under unusual circumstances involving very strong roof members and/or mining systems, and/or practices especially likely to induce bursts, a burst conceivably could occur under less roof. Under special circumstances rock bursts have occurred in marble quarries almost at the surface.' Furthermore, under very heavy cover it is likely that controlling roof members need not be as strong and as close to the coal bed to cause bumps. Just what constitutes a strong roof or roof member is open to question. Obviously the strength of a roof member is determined by its thickness, the distance between bedding planes across which little or no bond exists, the spacing and development of joints, and the inherent strength of the rock material. Strata sections showing roofs under which rock bursts in coal mines have developed are illustrated in Fig. 2. In several instances the strength of rocks composing the roof of mines developing bumps has been tested. The tests (Table I) show that these rocks develop considerable strength in compression, bending, and shear and that in some cases the strengths are very high. No quantitative data are available concerning joints in roof members over coal beds where rock bursts have occurred, but the author has examined many mines subject to bursts and has received the impression that joints in the shales immediately over the coal beds are always present and well developed. In the main sandstone or conglomerate members themselves, however, where observed, he has yet to see a fracture system indicating well developed joints. Undoubtedly joints are present, but the evidence indicates that they are few, poorly developed, and widely spaced. In a mine subject to bumps, moreover, actual measurements of roof spans up to 225 ft between supports under a cover of about 800 ft have been made before roof failure occurred. Such spans signify strong roof. In coal beds subject to rock bursts, the bottom rock is usually a sandy shale. A few tests (Table I) have been made on the floor rock of coal beds. Observations in mines indicate that they are usually weaker than roof rocks and that under load they show more plastic effects. Observation in ground subject to bursts invariably indicates a relatively strong floor highly resistant to heaving, although some heaving may occur. Other factors listed as favorable to rock bursts are: 1) mountainous surface; 2) steeply dipping beds; 3) proximity of faults, folds, and other similar geologic structures. Many bursts have occurred in mines under mountainous country, although many bursts in mines under a surface with little relief indicate that thickness of cover, not relief, is the essential factor. In steeply dipping beds, many bursts occur in mines that are essentially flat, and rock bursts have been recorded in beds dipping as much as 35o Most rock bursts in the U. S. occur in beds that dip less than 10 pct. It is also true that most U. S. coal is produced from beds dipping less than 10 pct. Geologically, faults are regarded as providing stress relief, but in the vicinity of faults, as well as sharp folds, it would seem that residual stresses could be present. The fact that rock bursts occur in areas remote from faults and sharp folds suggests that their presence is not necessary for this phenomenon to take place. There have been many bursts close to faults and folds, and it may be assumed that occasionally such structures accentuate their occurrence3 The conditions and circumstances under which they occur, coupled with the effects produced, leave In the Crowsnest Pass coalfield, British Columbia, a rock burst is estimated to have released 1.8 million cu ft of methane.

NEARLY all problems in mining engineering involve the transport and distribution of materials from place to place, and in general the most economically managed mines and plants are those in which the transport of materials has been carried out most efficiently. Of all these transport problems, the hoisting of ore out of the mine and the distribution of same to the various treatment works is perhaps one of the most important. It is proposed in the present paper to traverse the conditions,affecting the location, scale of operations, and design of the main shaft and head gear at the Mount Morgan mine; afterwards describing the designs and workings of the shaft house, winding engine, and transport from the shaft house to the treatment works.LOCATIONWhen the copper-gold ore was developed sufficiently to determine approximately the boundaries of the ore-body, it was found that the existing vertical shafts would be wholly inadequate to deal with the increased quantity of ore required to be handled.
