An active list of permissible explosives was published in December 1936 as part of Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3324, under the title "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Prior to July 31, 1,936." This list included 170 brand names. Changes in the list that have been authorized to June 30, 1937 placed 35 additional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a result of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. Ten permissible explosives were transferred from the active to the inactive list. The present list contains 196 brand names, one explosive having been placed on the list subsequent to June 30, 1937. A study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate natural gas as an automotive fuel and to provide guidelines for optimum engine adjustments for low exhaust emissions. The study was conducted using a single-cylinder engine, a multicylinder engine, and a total of eight vehicles. Results from single-cylinder engine tests showed that the light-load, lean-limit misfire region for natural gas begins at an air-fuel ratio between 150 and 160 pct of stoichiometric. Changes in ignition timing significantly influenced emissions of nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons, but had little effect on carbon monoxide emission. Low emissions can be achieved with current-design engines by adjustment of engine parameters, but only with heavy penalty to engine performance. Emissions from vehicles fueled with natural gas are virtually unaffected by ambient temperature change within the range 20° to 100° F. The organic emissions from engines fueled with natural gas were estimated to be 22 to 25 pct as reactive as the emissions produced using gasoline. Levels of exhaust emissions from vehicles fueled with natural gas were unchanged over 10,000 miles of normal driving.

Two methods of calibrating the parameters K and Alpha for use in Gy’s formula for the fundamental sampling error were investigated. Approximately 480 kg of broken ore from Harmony’s Target gold mine in South Africa was used to compile the replicate samples for two experiments. The duplicate series analysis (DSA) and segregation free analysis (SFA) methods differ in terms of their approach to recovering the sized materials required for the calibration procedure. In this experiment the DSA method split off six more-or-less equal masses of material from a 75 kg lot that was successively crushed to finer and finer fragment sizes. The sublots so formed were split into 32 samples and fire assayed for gold. The SFA method used approximately 250 kg of broken ore crushed to 95 per cent passing 2.50 cm, which was then passed through successively finer screens until a sublot of less than 0.0075 cm was obtained. Each of the 15 sublots obtained in this way were split using a riffle splitter into 32 samples that were fire assayed. A total of 672 fire assays were used in these experiments. The sampling parameters K and Alpha were used for the compilation of a nomogram and to calculate the gold liberation size of the ores. While there are no definitive results in terms of the actual gold grain sizes against which the calculated sizes can be compared, it appears that the DSA method produces more acceptable results.CITATION:Minnitt, R, 2014. "The Lewisburg No. 2 mine of the Sloss-Sheffield Steel & Iron Company is located in Jefferson County, Alabama, about 7 miles due north of Birmingham. At this point the coal from the Mary Lee seam when coked in by-product ovens yields an excellent quality of metallurgical coke suitable for use in the iron blast furnace; it is also an excellent steam coal. In mining, all three benches are worked. Coarse impurities are largely gobbed by the miners underground.In addition to giving the data obtained from screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests of a representative sample of the raw coal, this report presents the results of slotted-screen tests to show the proportions of flaky particles in selected sizes, and the results of tests to show how much coal is liberated from impurities by crushing the coarsest sizes. These data have been obtained in connection with an extensive study of coal-washing now being conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with U. cooperation of the different operators of Alabama. As the work progresses other reports will follow containing furtner data on the washability both of the Mary Lee seam and of other seams in Alabama and giving the results obtained in preparing these coals by various methods.Although a great amount of investigative work on the preparation of the Mary Lee scam was previously carried on by the various coal companies of the district, comparatively little of this information has been published. In governmental publications three references have been found. Forbes5 gives a number of sections with proximate and ultimate analyses of face samples taken in the mines. Gandrud and Britton'' show sections of this seam at Flat Creek and New Castle; they also give the specific gravity and ash contents of the partings of coal and impurities. In their paper Yancey and Fraser7 include washability studies and washing data from the Sayreton mine of the Republic Iron & Steel Co."

Crystallography. - The subject of Crystallography includes the description of the characters of crystals in general; of the various forms of crystals and their division into classes and systems; of the methods of studying crystals, including the determination of the mathematical relations of their faces, and the measurement of the angles between them; finally, a description of compound or twin crystals, of irregularities in crystals, of crystal- line aggregates, and of pseudomorphous crystals. 6. Definition of a Crystal.- A crystal * is the regular polyhedral form, bounded by smooth surfaces, which is assumed by a chemical compound, under the action of its intermolecular forces, when passing, under suitable conditions, from the state of a liquid or gas to that of a solid. As expressed in the foregoing definition, a crystal is characterized, first, by its definite internal molecular structure, and, second, by its external form. A crystal is the normal form of a mineral species, as of all solid chemical com- pounds; but the conditions suitable for the formation of a crystal of ideal perfection in symmetry of form and smoothness of surface are never fully realized. Further, many species usually occur not in distinct crystals, but in massive form, and in some exceptional cases the definite molecular structure is absent. 7. Molecular Structure in General.- By definite molecular structure is meant the special arrangement which the physical units, called molecules, assume under the action of the forces exerted between them during the formation of the solid. Some remarks are given in a later article (p. 22 et seq.) in regard to the kinds of molecular arrangement theoretically possible, and their relation to the symmetry of the different systems and classes of crystals.

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the nine separate parcels that comprise the 4,330-acre South Warner Contiguous Wilderness Study Area in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The nine parcels are along the east side of the South Warner Wilderness. They are, from north to south, the Granger, Milk, Cottonwood, Owl, Hornback, Eagle, Emerson, Barber, and Van Riper parcels. The Wilderness Study Area is underlain by basaltic, andesitic, and rhyolitic volcanic rocks and by sand and gravel deposits. Low-grade metamorphism is widespread in the volcanic rocks, with quartz, zeolites, datolite, chlorite, and calcite locally abundant in veins and amygdules. The rocks have been displaced by the mountain-front Surprise Valley fault and by crosscutting high-angle faults.

Improved process control can be achieved through the accurate and reliable on-line measurement of critical process parameters in real time. Over the past few decades on-line analysis techniques have been developed and applied in the mineral and energy industries for the measurement of process stream composition, mineralogy, particle size and flow rates. This has led to increased throughput and product quality while reducing processing costs and minimising emissions. The support of a sustainable mineral processing industry will require the further development of on-line analysis and control technologies. The application of developments in instrumentation combined with improved control strategies will lead to improvements in process efficiency resulting in large economic benefits to the industry, reduced energy usage and lower process emissions. There is a clear convergence of interests in being able to better measure and control minerals processing in terms of the triple bottom line of economic, social and environmental impacts. Technology is increasingly becoming available enabling measurement across the entire spectrum of minerals processing from mining to hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy. CSIRO is developing a range of these new technologies. A number of these developments are discussed in the present paper, namely: on-line particle size analysis and acoustic emission methods to enhance the control and optimisation of grinding circuits; on-line mineralogy of dry powders and slurries; on-line bulk elemental analysers for application on conveyor belts and in smelters; and the development of new sensing technologies for sorting base metal ores.

The Mineralogical form of Silver in a Ag-rich complex ore was determined. In the complex sulfide ore, acidic thiourea leaching resulted in 35% extraction of silver directly. In the same complex sulfide ore, under the effect of ultrasonic treatment, 65% of silver can be ex¬tracted. After the above ore had been roasted and acidically leached of Zn and Cu, the silver extracted from this Pb-Ag residue was 96.8%. The effets of temperature, thiourea and ferric ion concentrations and partical size were examined. The leaching rate of silver from the Pb-Ag residue was diffusion controlled. The activation energy was calculated to be 10. 49%KJ/mole. The kinetic model for the thiourea leaching of silver from Pb-Ag residue was obtained and is given by, The kinetics of silver cementation by aluminium in thiourea solutions was also investigated. The activation energy was calculated to be 65. 13KJ/mole, which is reasonable fora rate-limiting surface reaction.

O sopro de oxigênio é a principal operação durante o processo de refino de aço em aciarias BOF (Basic Oxygen Furnace). Este sopro é feito por uma lança de injeção de oxigênio através de bocais supersônicos, que devem ser dimensionados para as condições específicas de operação, como por exemplo, vazões e pressões de oxigênio, altura de banho, altura da lança em relação ao banho, etc. O mau dimensionamento destes bocais tem influência direta no tempo e eficiência de processo, além de comumente resultar em desgaste prematuro dos bocais e na retirada do bico de operação. Este tipo de falha tem sido observado em bicos da Vallourec Brasil. No presente trabalho será apresentada a metodologia de estudos e resultados de análise metalográfica em amostras de um bico de lança usado pela da empresa, além de simulações CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) realizadas para se caracterizar o mecanismo de desgaste dos bocais. Estas informações foram utilizadas como base para o redimensionamento dos bocais, objetivando conter os impactos causados pelo desgaste.

"Methods have been developed to measure the physical properties of molten materials relevant to the fluid flow in high temperature processes. Data for the densities, viscosities and surface tensions of Al-, Ni- and Fe-based alloys are compared with (i) values for the pure metals and (ii) estimated values obtained from models making use of chemical composition of the alloy. Experimental values for metallurgical slags are also given and compared with estimated values.1 IntroductionPhysical property data has proved very useful in improving process control and product quality. For instance, in the continuous casting of steel the viscosity (TJ) of the mould flux is important since it determines (i) the optimum casting conditions, nVc = 2.5±1 dPas (m min-1) where V c is the casting speed and (ii) the level of slag entrapment (which leads to inclusions) in the metal. Thus data for properties like viscosity are exceedingly useful in understanding the process and the problems encountered and the causes of defects and problems.Another interesting development which has helped to increase our knowledge of processes and improve process control and product quality is the development of mathematical models of the fluid and heat flow in the process. These models have been developed to the stage where one of the prime requirements is for good physical property data for the industrial materials involved. Recently, Oxley [1] has shown that the use of reliable, experimental, property values for the commercial alloy in a commercial software package produced a significant improvement in the prediction of casting defects. Thus reliable property data are required for liquid metals but also for (i) liquid slags since many processes involve the use of a slag to refine and protect the metal or to lubricate the mould and (ii) refractories, sand and investment moulds."

Introduction In view of the fact that, during the past year, two Manitoba mines-Flin Fion and Sherritt Gordon-have entered the list of producers and have materially increased that Province's contribution to the metal production of the Dominion, it would seem appropriate at this time to review the progress of the industry in the Province, with particular reference to the out-standing metal-mining developments of the past decade. That these two mines have been able to continue their operations in spite of the low prices of copper and zinc adds a touch of brightness to the industrial life of the Province. Depression in metal prices is not encouraging to the mining industry, but it does stimulate efficiency in methods and costs of production. As two thriving towns have grown around the two mines, the will of the management to carry-on is of great consequence to Manitoba, this year so hard hit by the .agricultural depression. And, much as it is a pleasant feature in the mining situation that these mines have been able to continue operations, nevertheless it must be noted, in reviewing the mining developments of the past few years in Manitoba, that the Province was fortunate enough to profit by good times, in that an industry was established which gives evidence of permanency. In the metallic field, the section of Manitoba that first received attention from prospectors was the boundary district, west of the Lake of the Woods. Several claims were staked here at the time of the gold boom in the neighbouring Ontario area. But the first real interest in metalliferous deposits dates from the discovery of gold in March, 1911, in quartz veins on the shores of Rice lake, some twenty miles east of lake Winnipeg. Systematic and organized prospecting of the pre-Cambrian areas of the Province may be said to have commenced with that discovery. The first gold discovery in northern Manitoba was made at Wekusko (Herb) lake in 1914. This was followed by the discovery of the Flin Flan and Mandy copper ore-bodies in 1915 on Flin Fion and Schist lakes, respectively.

One concern of the Mine Safety and Health Administration is the structural integrity of steel wire ropes used on mine personnel hoists and elevators. Failure of such ropes has resulted in loss of life and property. Although thorough and regular visual examinations are performed, hoist ropes may still fail from undetected internal wear, corrosion, and broken wires. To complement visual examinations, nondestructive rope inspection techniques have been developed to determine deterioration and removal criteria. The techniques use electromagnetic and permanent-magnet test instruments designed by a Canadian firm. This paper describes the operating principles, field and laboratory testing of these nondestructive testing instruments, and discusses the feasibility of using this type of testing as a supplement to visual examination and destructive tests.

To investigate the effects of flow geometry on laminar flames, studies are in progress in this laboratory employing Bunsen-type burners with rectangular cross section. Interpretation of these studies requires a determination of the flow velocity at all points of the rectangular cross section for one dimensional steady laminar flow. In addition, values of the velocity gradient at the boundary for such flows are needed in the interpretation of blow-off and flash-back studies with burners of rectangular cross section. The hydrodynamical problem of steady laminar flow of a viscous fluid in channels of rectangular cross section was solved by Stokes. His results have been quoted by Love21 and by Dryden, Murnaghan, and Bateman,§/ and they have been discussed by Boussines and by Paschoud. It may be noted that the steady laminar flow of a viscous fluid in channels of rectangular cross section constitutes a hydrodynamical analogue for the problem of the torsion of an isotropic prism of rectangular cross section.

The classifiers on the primary grinding circuit at Cyprus Sierrita have been upgraded from 0.66 m (26 in) diameter hydrocyclones to 0.84 m (33 in) diameter hydrocyclones. This has resulted in a 4.3 % (11 t/h) (12 standard tons/hour) increase in mill throughput while producing a flotation feed which contains 4.8% less +300 micron (48 mesh Tyler screen size) material. This reduction in flotation feed particle size has increased copper (CU) recovery by 0.8 %. Various grinding circuit relationships were evaluated. These relationships include circulating load versus throughput, horizontal versus vertical cyclone configuration, and the effect of cyclone components on performance. We conclude that the improvements achieved are due to a shift in the overflow size distribution created by a cyclone diameter more suited to our operation, and by eliminating the cyclone capacity constraint in the grinding circuit.

The topography of the Jamestown fluorspar area is rough and ranges from 6,400 to 8,000 feet in altitude. Some fluorspar was mined as early as 1870, but mining really did not begin in earnest until 1940, and up to July 1947 it is estimated that 272,500 tons of fluorite was mined and milled. In 1947 the General Chemical Co. was mining fluorite and milling it in a 200-ton-a-day mill at Valmont, 7 miles east of Boulder, and the Ozark-Mahoning Co. was milling ore in a 100-ton-a-day mill at Jamestown, using ore mined, by H. M. Williamson & Son. These fluorite deposits comprise veins in a granite country rock. The Bureau of Mines drilled eight holes, aggregating 2,579.1 feet, on the Blue Jay vein; four holes, aggregating 1,434 feet, on the Chancellor; and one 350-foot hole on the Nations Treasure. Fluorite of a minable grade and width was found in 10 of the holes drilled. In this report the location and accessibility, physical, features and climate are described and a brief history of the district is given. The deposits and character of the ore and sampling and analyses are described, mine workings are outlined, and work performed by the Bureau of Mines is summarized. Diamond drill logs are shown in appendix I, and 'Sample analyses are tabulated in appendix II.

This paper presents the preliminary test results obtained using a 0.38-kg/s (3,000-lb/hr) beta prototype MagMill. In processing Upper Freeport coal, the beta prototype recovered 82 % of the weight of the feed and 91 % of the heat content while reducing the potential emissions of sulfur by 61%. Pyritic sulfur in the MagMill product was reduced by 78% compared with that in the feed. For all runs, the mill product particle size was controlled to between 70% and 80% -741m (200 mesh). Recoveries of mercury, arsenic and selenium ranged from 35% to 45% of the amounts found in the feed. Power draw was reduced by 26%, and mill throughput was increased by 9% compared to the pulverizer operating with no magnetic separator attached.

Misfires caused by unreliable shock tube constructions can have significant cost implications and place field workers at serious risk during remediation. Ionomer materials, used as a subtube in shock tube constructions, provide superior hot tack strength, oil resistance, impact resistance at cold temperatures and excellent thermoformability properties. These are important features for resisting blast-throughs and ensuring blasting reliability in demanding environments, such as open pit mining in harsh environments. Superior hot tack strength, strain hardening, and excellent thermoformability properties of the ionomer materials ensure uniform powder distribution along the shock tube during construction and avoid undesired powder accumulation due to deformation or vibration during use. Oil or chemical resistance is another feature of Ionomers. This allows improved property retention in contact with oils and hence longer sleep times of the shock tube. Another feature of these highly engineered ionomers is superior impact strength at low temperatures. This plays an important role considering the resistance to fly rock impact in open pit mining operations in particular in cold climates.

The influence of SiO2 on the reducibility of the CaO–Fe2O3–SiO2 system was fully examined in this study. The isothermal reduction kinetics of CF and CF8S (CaO/Fe2O3 = 1:1, wt% (SiO2) = 8) were investigated through thermogravimetric analysis at 1123, 1173, and 1223 K with 30% CO and 70% N2 gas mixtures. The reduction of the samples with 8% SiO2 was not only highly accelerated but also proceeded easily. Rate analysis revealed that CF and CF8S reduction occurs in two stages, the Fe3O4-to-FeO stage overlaps with the previous Fe2O3-to-Fe3O4 stage and tends to approach the following FeO-to-Fe stage with the addition of SiO2. The apparent activation energy values of CF and CF8S reduction are 46.89 and 8.71 kJ mol−1. Sharp analysis indicated that CF and CF8S reduction was expressed by the Avrami–Erofeev equation presenting a 2D shrinking layer reaction.

Growth characteristics of Co-rich crusts from the Western Pacific have been approached. The thick crust shows 3 structural layers: compact upper layer, porous middle layer, and compact lower layer. The middle and lower layers have obviously different microscopic structure, color, and luster. Preliminary study of Calcareous nanofossils in one crust shows that the crust began to grow since Paleogene. The porous middle layer was formed from late Miocene to late Pliocene (Ca. 0.5 ~ 11.9Ma) and the compact lower layer was formed from late Paleocene to late Oligocene (Ca. 56.3 ~ 23.2Ma). The sedimentary hiatus of a 14.26Ma was observed between the middle and lower layers. The boundary between them to be Oligocene/Miocene (O/M) shows an important message on growth age.
