It has always been a challenge to accelerate the underground development progress by increasing the advance rate of each development round. Surveys have shown that most of the development rounds have only been pulled 84 per cent to 94 per cent of the drilled length. Where bare detonators have been used as primers, less advance rate is expected. In order to obtain a good understanding of the influence of priming upon the advance rate in underground development, a series of high energy primer trials has been conducted by Orica Explosives in the goldfields using various types of Orica high energy Anzomex « primers. It has been shown that development face has been pulled an extra 140 mm to 420 mm by priming with Anzomex « K primers compared with conventional primers. From all the trials at different sites, we have seen that the face pulled using K primers was more square than that pulled using conventional primers. Virtually, no butts and toe were left on the face developed using K primers. Computer simulation has been conducted using either a conventional primer, a bare detonator or a K primer as initiator. The study compared the predicted crack patterns developed around the toe of the hole and it was deducted that a detonator-initiated hole would leave a butt some 200 mm longer than that from a conventional primer-initiated hole, and a K primer-initiated blasthole would give rise to stronger initial p-wave, promoting crack development around the toe and increasing the ability to pull close to the full depth.

Pictured on these pages are the seven RMCMI Scholarship Award Winners for the 1992-93 year followed by a brief profile. All winners were present as guests of the Institute at the June convention in Beaver Creek, Colorado to receive recognition at the Institute Awards Luncheon Monday, June 28. 1993. Each state vice president served as the host for the collegiate winner. In addition to receiving a plaque from the Scholarship Chairman, Alan Czarnowsky, each winner receives $750 tuition credit for the coming academic year. As this is a continuing award, the winners from the previous year will receive another $750 for tuition credit in their senior year if they have maintained good academic standing and are recommended by their university. A resident from each of the eight RMCMI member states is selected from among Board approved institutions. Criteria for these awards to be made in the spring annually is (1) That the award be made to a sophomore student and used as tuition during the junior year. (2) That the recipient be both a U.S. citizen and a resident of the member state. (3) That the recipient have good academic standing, be pursing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in Western coal as a possible career path. The scholarship program includes curricula other than those in the mining departments, but in engineering disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy. Contributions to this worthy project are tax deductible to each individual RMCMI member or his firm. Through annual donations of $100 or more, the Patrons of the Institute fund the scholarship pro- gram and the various vice presidents contribute the travel expenses to convention for these outstanding young collegiates. Geotechnical exploration in North America, in particular, exploration for deep foundations analyses, is currently and generally performed following the most basic sampling and insitu testing methods and techniques. Some would surely say that the state-of-practice severely lags the state-of-the-art. Probably more than 90% of all deep foundations, both driven piles and drilled piers, installed in North America are initially analyzed and designed, i. e. geotechnically, on the basis of either the soil penetration resistance obtained by performing the "Standard Penetration Test" (SPT), or from laboratory shear tests performed on samples obtained using 76-mm (3-in.) nominal diameter, thin wall, "Shelby tube" samplers. The use of design data obtained with other exploration methods and devices, such as bore hole pressure meters, flat plate dilatometers, even cone penetrometers, occur on the fringes of practice and often in conjunction with the use of the two simpler methods of analysis. This basic approach probably represents an attempt of the profession to use, as much as possible, common, easily understood and easily communicated procedures in all geologic environments. The characteristics of drill rigs with the required drilling and samplng tools vary somewhat from region to region in North America according to the physiography of the area of use, the types of exploration data required on a day-to-day basis, the philosophy of the engineers and geologists that use the exploration data and the financial resources of the drill rig owner. The physical capability of the exploration drill rig used on a project can have a significant effect on the quality of samples or insitu tests. The physical configuration and the quality of the drill and the drilling, sampling and testing tools not only provide the mechanical capability to obtain data but affect the attitude of the field exploration crew and the quality of work. "Health hazards in the mining industry may be attributed to (1) abnormal conditions of the air, (2) improper sewage disposal, (3) bad drinking water, (4) bad illumination, and (5) local mechanical irritation.Abnormal conditions of the air may be due either to physical or chemical changes. The physical changes are (1) abnormal temperature, (2) abnormal humidity, (3) air movement, and (4) presence of dusts. Dusts may be either poisonous, as salts of lead, arsenic, zinc, or mercury; or nonpoisonous, as dust from coal, silica or quartz, limestone, gypsum, or silicates. Chemical changes may be due to changes in the normal constituents, as lowered oxygen or increased carbon dioxide; or to the addition of abnormal constituents, as carbon monoxide (white damp), hydrogen sulphide (stink damp), sulphur dioxide, methane (marsh gas, fire damp), hydrogen, and nitrogen.Effects of High Temperatures and Humidities The effects of various temperatures and relative humidities have been studied in mines in many countries. Harrington and myself studied them in the metal mines of this country and, in a report written recently, they have been summarized as follows:A. This paper presents a technique lor predicting the flow of oil, gas and water through a petroleum reservoir. Gravitational, viscous arid capillary lorces are considered, and all fluids are considered to be slightly compressible. Some theoretical work concerning the fluid flow in one-, two- and three-space dimensions is given along with example performance predictions in one- and two-space dimensions. INTRODUCTION Since the introduction of high speed computing equipment, one of the goals of reservoir engineering research has been to develop more accurate methods of describing fluid movement through underground reservoirs. Various mathematical methods have been developed or used by reservoir engineers to predict reservoir performance, 193-5,7,8 The work reported in this paper extends previously published work on three-phase fluid flow (1) by including a rigorous treatment of capillary forces and (2) by showing certain theoretical mathematical results proving that these equations can be approximated by certain numerical techniques and that a unique solution exists. DISCUSSION The method of predicting three-phase compressible fluid flow. in a reservoir can be summarized briefly by the following steps. 1. The reservoir, or a section of a reservoir, is characterized by a series of mesh points with varying rock and fluid properties simulated at each mesh point. 2. Three partial differential equations are written to describe the movement at any point in the reservoir of each of the three compressible fluids. All forces influencing movement are considered in the equations. 3. At each mesh point, the partial differential equations are replaced by a system of analogous difference equations. 4. A numerical technique is used to solve the resulting system of difference equations. Capillary forces have been included in two-phase flow calculations.1,4,8 The literature, however, does not contain examples of prediction techniques for three-phase flow that include capillary forces. Where capillary forces are considered, each of the three partial differential equations previously discussed has a different dependent variable, namely pressure in one of the three fluid phases. Therefore, three difference equations must be solved at each point in the reservoir. Where large systems of equations must be solved simultaneously, an engineer might question whether a unique solution to this system of equations actually exists and, if so, what numerical techniques may be used to obtain a good approximation to the solution. It is shown in the Appendix that a unique solution to the three-phase flow problem, as formulated, always exists. It is also shown that several methods may be used to obtain a good approximation to the solution. The partial differential equations and differenceequations used are shown in the Appendix. Matrix notation has been used in developing the mathematical results. Two sample problems were solved on a CDC 1604. They illustrate the type of problems that can be solved using a three-phase prediction technique. SAMPLE ONE-DIMENSIONAL RESERVOIR PERFORMANCE PREDICTION A hypothetical reservoir was studied to provide an example of a one-dimensional problem that can be solved. Of the several techniques available, the direct method of solution as shown in the Appendix was used. The reservoir section studied was a truncated, wedge-shaped section, 2,400 ft long, with a 6' dip. (A schematic is shown in Fig. 1.) This section was represented by 49 mesh points, uniformly spaced at 50-ft intervals. The upper end of the wedge was 2 ft wide, and the lower end was 6 ft wide. The section

The use of sunflower oil co-products it was studied for production thermoplastic composites. Thermoplastic composites have been processed in polyethylene matrices of virgin linear low density polyethylene (LLDP) or recycled. Samples have been formulated with 10% mass fraction of sunflower bran, seed coat and mixture of bran and seed coat. The material characterization has been achieved by mechanical tensile test and Shore D hardness and by density physical testing. The results have demonstrated better properties to thermoplastic composites with sunflower seed coat.

Maptek, an international development software company, released version 3.2 of its Vulcan three-dimensional mining and geological software package. This latest release is expected to give clients better graphics performance and improved overall solutions. In addition, the company also released the NT version of Vulcan for Unix and personal computers. More than 800 code changes have gone into the 3.2 release, the Lakewood, CO-based company said. Many of these changes were in response to requests from Maptek's customers. Others have been motivated internally by the company to achieve better performance in its Envisage graphics interface. The introduction of hot keys and user-defined menus makes Envisage a more flexible interface and a more productive working environment. A new animation option provides new ways to enhance the organization and display of data. The animated data can include point, string, grid, triangulation and photographic-draped data. The shaft-mapping facility is also included in version 3.2. It enables the cylindrical view of the shaft to be unwrapped and displayed on the screen while the data remains in its true world coordinates. Major upgrades to Vulcan include underground blast design and geotechnical modules. The new blast design module allows the user to develop a ring design in any plane defined by the stope layout. Radial and offset holes can be developed. User-friendly editing tools make adjustments to the initial design a simple task. The user defines the plotting and reporting of rings and plot style templates allow flexibility in reporting. New features in the geotechnical toolbox include options to create daylight windows and pitch lines on the stereo nets. Geotechnical databases can be directly updated from the interpretation of the stereo net. Direct annotation of the symbols on the net is now possible and the stereo net display can be customized. Improvements to the documentation and links within the text have made the on-line help easier to navigate. Maptek also released the NT version of Vulcan soft- ware. The comprehensive design of the software pack- age for Unix and personal computers provides a three-dimensional geological modeling and mine planning system within a natural graphics environment. Users who require the power to manipulate extra- large and complex data sets will still be served by the Unix platform. Users who handle small-to-large datasets can now choose between Unix and personal computer platforms. The NT version will appeal primarily to companies that already have a personal computer network. Response to industry feedback was the basis for developing the NT version. "We want to ensure that our clients receive the optimal product for their needs," said Nicolas Simon, vice president of Maptek in North America. Some advantages of the NT version include: ? Most mining professionals are familiar with the personal computer platform. ? All of the familiar personal computer tools are now available to Vulcan users. ? Resource modeling tools that previously required the powerful Unix workstations have been brought into the personal computer environment. This will help mining companies save money. ESSO PRODUCTION RESEARCH CO., HOUSTON, TEX. A mathematical model that represents the conduction heating of a rock formation of limited permeability is formulated. Heat is introduced by the injection of a hot condensing gas into horizontal fractures through the formation. The fractures are assumed to be equally spaced; the flow of fluid is linear. The model consists of three coupled partial differential equations and two functional relationships. Temperature histories for both fractures and formation are obtained by numerical procedures. Application of the model in predicting in situ heating of oil shale is illustrated with four sample cases. Influences of shale thermal diffusivity, fluid pressure in the fracture and fracture spacing upon heating rate are demonstrated. In all cases considered, several years were required to heat all the formation to 700F with 1,000F steam. Less than 32 per cent of the injected heat was utilized for heating the shale. To facilitate extensive calculations of this type, a set of seven dimension-less quantities are derived. With this dimensionless system, the effect of controllable parameters on economics can be explored. INTRODUCTION Vast deposits of hydrocarbons are contained in oil shale formations in the western United States and in other countries. These hydrocarbons, known as kerogen, are difficult to recover because they are immobile solids and because the rock formations in which they are found have very limited permeability. The kerogen can be converted through pyrolysis to recoverable liquids and gases if the formation temperature is elevated to the range 600 to 800F. To accomplish this heating, the formation might be artificially fractured and a hot fluid injected into the fractures. If the injection and production wells are vertical and the fractures horizontal, interwell communication will be established and the hot fluid will flow from an injection well to a production well. In this process, some of the heat in the fluid will be given up and conducted into the formation. Products of pyrolysis will flow from the heated rock matrix into the fractures and be produced, commingled with the injected fluid. The practicality of such a process is strongly influenced by the rate at which heat can be transferred from the hot fluids to the formation. An analysis of this heat conduction problem is the subject of this paper. Linear flow of a condensing gas through a set of horizontal, equally spaced fractures is considered. Temperature histories for both fractures and formation are obtained from numerical procedures. The analysis also applies to formations containing streaks of natural permeability instead of fractures. Heat flow problems similar to the one treated here have been studied by other workers. Thomas1 has solved a radial problem in which he considers the injection of a noncondensing gas into a single, horizontal fracture and approximates the temperature profile in the fracture by a step function. The solutions to other problems, which are less similar to the present problem than the one treated by Thomas, have been reviewed by Spillette.2 In addition to these mathematical studies, a field test of an in situ shale oil recovery process using hot natural gas as the injected fluid has been reported.3 The first part of this paper is concerned with the mathematical development of the problem. The differential equations, boundary conditions and functional relationships which describe the physical model are formulated and the equations are cast into finite difference form. The method of solution of the difference equations is discussed (Appendix B). The second part of this paper presents results computed for a typical oil shale formation for which steam at 1,000F is the injected fluid. Recent advances in computer simulation together with field measurements of caving and microseismic activity about longwall panels, has allowed a much better understanding of the caving process and the variability due to geology. The joint research between SCT Operations and CSIRO Division of Exploration and Mining has initiated new methods of computational modelling predicting various caving patterns and strata failure far ahead of the longwall face. This work was validated by field measurements of caving and microseismic activity at the longwall face.The rock fracture distribution and the caving characteristics of a range of strata sections have been simulated by computer methods. Validation studies of the method were addressed together with case studies. The interaction of caving with support convergence and face control is presented. The method allows the simulation of longwall support behaviour under various geological conditions. The system also allows a prediction of the monitoring data, which is best suited to give an early warning of weighting events or signal various key caving characteristics.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines publication is an analysis of underground coal mine fire incidents occurring in the United States during the 15years from 1978 through 1992. The fire data used in this analysis were obtained from U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration mine fire investigation reports. Fires were analyzed by year, State, coalbed thickness, mine size, mining method, ignition source, burning substance, location, equipment involved, detection method, time of day, time of year, number of injuries and fatalities, method of extinguishment, and evacuation measures taken. In all, 164 fires are included in this report, or an average of 10.8 fires per year. The most fires occurred in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, respectively. However, the fire incidence rates for these States, expressed as the number of fires per million tons of coal mined, were the lowest, second lowest, and fourth lowest of all underground coal producing States. The most common ignition source was electricity; the most common burning substance was coal; the most frequent fire location was the belt entry; the most common equipment involved in fires was the conveyor belt; and the most common extinguishing agent was water.

The effects of temperature, grain size, and magnesium content on the strength and ductility of cadmium were studied in the range -269° to 23 °C. A sharp drop in ductility between -140° and -190°C marked a transition in fracture mode from ductile shear to inter gvanular fracture. The addition of up to 15.35 wt pct Mg in solid solution raised the transition temperature, and for two compositions produced basal cleavages. The relatively high ductility of unalloyed cadmium at cryogenic temperatures is attributed to temperature independence of the yield stress and the absence of dislocation locking. ALTHOUGH numerous studies have been made of the mechanical properties of cadmium single crystals,1-5 no comprehensive investigation of deformation and fracture in polycrystalline cadmium has been carried out. This investigation was initiated to determine the mechanisms of deformation and fracture in polycrystalline cadmium, and to attempt to correlate these mechanisms with the behavior of other metals of hexagonal close-packed structure. A second objective of this work was to determine whether the slip systems and mode of fracture of polycrystalline cadmium could be altered by reduction of the axial ratio, which is 1.886, through alloying. Dorn and co-workers' have been able to induce prismatic slip in magnesium through alloying to reduce the axial ratio. Single crystals of cadmium are so highly ductile that glide strains of 400 pct are observed at room temperature, and 80 pct at -269°c.l Failure in every reported case is by necking down and shearing off of the crystal. Cleavage in cadmium single crystals has never been observed. Magnusson and aldwin reported a ductile to brittle transition for polycrystalline cadmium at about —160 C for specimens tested at a strain rate of 0.05 in. per in. per min in tension. However, even at -196° substantial ductility was retained. The transition temperature was strain rate dependent, impact loading at 19,000 in. per in. per min raising the transition temperature to about -85°C while leaving the low temperature ductility unchanged. No information was given on microstructures or fracture mode, nor were stress-strain characteristics reported. In the present investigation, tensile tests were carried out on polycrystalline cadmium and solid solution Cd-Mg alloys to determine flow stresses, work-hardening behavior, fracture strength, and fracture ductility. Variables employed included temperature, alloy content (and c/a ratio), and grain size.Some compression data also have been obtained for comparison purposes. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES A) Polycrystalline Cadmium. Two purities of cadmium were employed in this investigation. Cadmium of 99.95 pct purity was supplied by Belmont Smelting and Refining Co. Cadmium of 99.99+ pct purity was supplied by American Smelting and Refining Co. Threaded cylindrical tensile specimens were machined to give approximately a 1/2 in. long straight gage section with a reduced diameter of about 0.110 in. Specimens were heat treated in evacuated pyrex capsules in the range 140" to 290°C to produce desired grain sizes. All specimens were polished in a solution containing 320 g Cr03 and 20 g NaS04 in 1000 cc of H20. Occasionally this solution caused staining of the specimen, in which case a further polish with a solution of one part HN03 and two parts H202 in two parts ethyl alcohol was employed.' Tensile testing was carried out on a screw-driven Instron machine, at a constant rate of crosshead movement, which for most tests was 0.01 in. per in. per min. Load vs time, and therefore load vs total strain, were recorded. Temperatures from -196" to -40°C were obtained by passing nitrogen gas through a copper coil immersed in liquid nitrogen, and then feeding the gas into a jacket around the specimen. Tests at -269°C were carried out in a helium cryostat, at a crosshead rate of 0.1 in. per in. per min, with specimens of 1 in. gage length. Compression specimens were tested in a jig similar to one designed by ilman. The jig was mounted on the under side of the Instron crosshead. Load was transmitted by means of a rod connected to a movable part of the jig at one end, and the load cell at the other end. A downward movement of the crosshead applied a compressive load to the specimen.

As in preceding years, the most intensive drilling activity during 1934 took place in the old fields of the western part of the Polish Carpathian petroleum province (district of Jaslo). The number of wells completed to the end of 1934, expressed in percentages, is as follows: Jaslo district, 57 per cent; oil fields outside Boryslaw-Tustanowice-Mraznica, 27; Stanislawow district 8 and Boryslaw fields only 7 per cent. The number of meters drilled (Table 2), expressed in percentages, for the same fields are as follows: Jaslo district, 51 per cent; oil fields outside Boryslaw-Tustanowice-Mraznica, 26; Stanislawow district, 12, and Boryslaw oil fields, 11 per cent. The Arvida Smelter marked its 80th anniversary in 2006. Arvida currently operates 6 potrooms equipped with prebaked side-feeding pots producing 160 000t of aluminum per year, requiring the supply of 300 000t of alumina per year. In the past, to ensure reliable alumina supplies to the pots, especially in winter, a safety stock of alumina was kept inside the plant. The improved reliability of shipping on the Saguenay River has cut the need for such a stock. However, the stoppage of 8 Soderbergtechnology potrooms, starting in the 1980s up to 2003, generated alumina from the cleaning of pot pits, totaling 18000t and leading to the building-up of a significant alumina stock again. Concerns over working conditions, effect on potroom operations, and dust emissions prevented Arvida from tackling effectively this impressive alumina stock. Yet the increasing cost of alumina has created a strong motivation to use the stored alumina. In 2004 Arvida launched a project to recycle the stored alumina. This 4-year project aimed at clearing the alumina stock without affecting the operation of the smelter. It involved changing work organization, improving equipment and controlling the effect of the recycled alumina on the smelting process and working conditions.

"Most of the Paleozoic section of the Williston Basin is a thick accumulation of numerous carbonate to evaporite, shallowing upward, cyclic sequences. These sediments were deposited in broad epeiric seas, and the deposition of the evaporite facies marked the final stage of each cycle. Many of the sequences display a pervasive replacement dolomite in the uppermost portion of the carbonate units. This secondary dolomitization is, at least in part, an early diagenetic event, synchronous with evaporite deposition.The inception of evaporite precipitation resulted in the seepage of a dense, Mg-rich brine into the underlying sediment. The heavy brine moved down the gentle regional dip displacing the more normal marine interstitial pore fluid and dotomitized the primary calcitic sediments en route. The supply of Mg-ions decreased away from the source, and correspondingly, the degree of dolomitization decreased and larger crystals formed because of slower nucleation at fewer sites.The seepage refluxion of dolomitizing brines gave rise to the frequently observed textural variation of cryptocrys talline, impervious dolomite grading into a finely sucrosic, permeable dolomite down-dip. This diagenetic facies change provides the critical up-dip barrier for potential hydrocarbon reservoirs. The lateral pool boundaries are controlled by either structural relief or a similar diagenetic facies change. The reservoirs are capped by the tight evaporites.Hydrocarbon production is attained from diagenetic traps in the Mississippian Oungre Zone and the Ordovician Red River 'C' Zone . Reservoir creation and the pooling mechanism are the result of dolomitization by the seepage refluxion of dense, Mg-rich brines beneath restricted, hypersaline lagoons. When formulating an exploration/ exploitation program for these oil prone horizons, it is essential to understand the complete geological history in order to establish where the reservoirs will be found and to define the areal extent of each accumulation."

"The Granisle and Bell Copper mines were officially put into production in 1966 and 1972, respectively. The Granisle Mine was purchased in late 1979by Noranda and the two operations were amalgamated as one division. Both mines were closed in 1982after sustaining heavy financial losses during a period of low copper prices beginning in 1981.This paper describes the resumption of operations at the Bell Mine in 1985 after its shutdown period of three years and the dramatic and sustained improvements in productivity and efficiency realized as a result of a commitment by employees and management to the application of Participative Management and Employee Involvement principles. After a general description of the effects of such a philosophy on the operation as a whole, and a comparison to the operation's last full year as a producer, it deals with the practice of this philosophy in the maintenance department at the Bell Mine and the superb results realized.IntroductionThe Bell Copper deposit was discovered in 1963 and came onstream as a 10000 ton s per day open pit mine in the fall of 1972. Identified reserves at that time were 46 million tons of ore containing 0.50% copper. The mine shared facilities of the townsite of Granisle with the nearby Zapata-Granby mine which had established the community six years earlier.Because of easy grinding ore and improvements to milling circuits, Bell's throughput rate was increased to 17 000 tons per day by the late 1970s. In the open pit, improvements resulted in mining of additional reserves with higher stripping ratios. At startup, a half ton o f waste was mined for every ton of ore processed.By the end of 1982, with 48.2 million tons already mined, the Bell Mine had identified additional mineable reserves of 39.4 million tons containing 0.52% Cu.In November 1979 the Granisle Mine was purchased from Zapata-Granby. The two mines, with a total of 700 employees, were operated under common management as the Babine Division until 1982 when low copper price s forced the closure of both for an indefinite period.The outlook for copper prices remained bleak and only 50 people were retained on the payroll to maintain the two plants, most of them working on a part-time schedule.The population of the Village of Granisle dwindled from over 1500 inhabitants to under 500, as people moved away to seek other employment.Prior to the shutdown, the Bell Mine employed 370 people and pit extraction averaged nearly 50000 tons per day of which 16000 tons was mill feed, and the remainder waste. Total cost to produce a pound of copper was C$1.36 in 1982."

THE MINERAL INDUSTRIES had a near-record year in 1950, as rising industrial activity in general, greatly accentuated by the outbreak of hostilities in Korea in midyear, called forth increasing supplies of mineral fuels and raw materials. The aggregate value of mineral production was second only to that in 1948, and the aggregate physical volume was exceeded only in 1948 and 1947. Lower coal production accounted for the failure to surpass these earlier years. Growth of production was fairly constant throughout the year, especially for crude petroleum; its physical output for the year as a whole exceeded that of 1949 by 7 percent. According to Federal Reserve Board indexes, other relative gains were 16 percent for coal, 9 percent for fuels in general, and 17 percent for metals. The increase for mining in general was of the order of 10 percent. This was not quite as large as the general increase in industrial production but clearly reflected the total-industrial trend (see fig. 1).

Aid mine operators as well as mine inspectors in making quick but sufficiently accurate measurements of the rock dust content of coal/rock dust mixtures. The Problem Past research has shown that accumulations of volatile coal dust in underground coal mines can be rendered non-explosive by dilution with chemically inert rock dust (usually limestone). Consequently, rock dusting is required by law in U.S. underground coal mines. However, mine officials and inspectors have no quick and reliable means to determine whether enough rock dust has been applied to achieve a mixture that is in compliance with the law. Even the compliance tests used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are slow and involved. MSHA assures that a mine has been rock dusted adequately by collecting samples from rock dusted areas of the mine and sending the samples to a laboratory for analyses of the inert-dust content. The analyses may not be completed for more than two weeks, during which time the mine in question might be inadequately protected against coal dust explosions. To solve this problem, the Bureau of Mines devised a quick, simple and reliable device that can immediately determine the rock-dust content of a mixture of coal and rock dust.

"With stricter limits globally being imposed on cyanide discharge levels in plant tailings, having a reliable and well designed cyanide detoxification circuit is critical for any operation. The INCO SO2/Air method is most commonly used for cyanide detoxification where sulfur dioxide and oxygen combine to oxidize cyanide to the much less toxic cyanate. This paper discusses the steps involved with the development, from laboratory through to design, of a robust cyanide detoxification circuit. The goal is to produce a cyanide detox circuit that reliably meets discharge target with the lowest operating and capital cost.Design begins in the laboratory where continuous tests simulate full scale operation of a detoxification circuit. Detailed design relies on several design parameters, based on theory and experience, to ensure the reactor can satisfy requirements of the cyanide destruction reaction. Selection of the correct reagents and their supply to the reactor is important to an operable process with minimal operator workload. The operability of the system relies on correct process control strategies to maintain optimal reagent addition and chemical conditions in the reactor. These design factors are critical to providing a robust plant that will consistently meet cyanide discharge levels, ensuring uninterrupted production and plant profitability."
