"The years following World War II were nation building years in Australia. Soldiers returned from the European and Asian theatres of war sparking a major infrastructure construction boom. Dams and highways were built to keep up with the growth of towns and cities, which were bursting at the seams, not just from the returning soldiers settling down with their families but also from the many waves of refugees from war torn areas around the globe.The demand for electricity generation and distribution required for the growing population sparked the expansion of the national power grid with new high-voltage transmission towers appearing across the landscape. However, with an original design life of 50 years, those transmission lines constructed in the 1950s are nearing, or are at the end of, their anticipated service life.In recent years, the Australian power distribution network has changed from a period of high construction activity in greenfield high-voltage lines to a period that is now focused on reducing cost and maintaining existing assets. Replacing aboveground structural members and electrical components is relatively simple even under live conditions. However, the replacement or repair of tower foundations, many of which are in remote locations, has been a problem that has caused difficulties for power utilities trying to operate on a budget while also avoiding costly and unpopular power outages. With thousands of miles of aging transmission lines needing life extension work, Piling & Civil Australia (PCA) has developed a patented system of upgrading the foundations with micropiles while under live-line conditions without requiring costly outages. The system is seen as revolutionary by power utilities, allowing the utilities to extend the life of their existing assets until demand increases to warrant the construction of a new line. PCA has been working on a potential solution with Powerlink Queensland for the past 5 years to develop a quick and cost-effective foundation replacement system that can extend the life of its existing asset base anywhere from an additional 5 years to 50 years.With design support from Quanta Subsurface, USA, PCA recently completed the foundation replacement of 26 lattice tower foundations in the Townsville region of North Queensland. Using a steel bracket (patent pending) to connect hollow bar micropiles to the lattice towers, the installation techniques that were developed enabled the micropiles to be installed within a tolerance of less than about 3/8 in (10 mm) through the existing steel grillage foundation while maintaining live line conditions. The project was an Australian first and a trial by Powerlink for wider use within its network, and it was delivered on time and within budget at one tenth of the cost of traditional methods."

GOLD was discovered in Alder Gulch, Virginia. City, Mont., on May 26, 1863. In a short time some 6000 people flocked to the new discovery, and on the banks of Alder Gulch six settlements sprang into existence, the principal one, Virginia City, alone surviving. This town today has a population of 800, and is the county seat of Madison County. It is estimated that between forty and fifty million dollars in gold was produced up to 1904. Virginia City is situated at the mouth of Alder Creek where that stream leaves the narrow canyon that cuts the steep foothills flanking Old Baldy Mountain, elevation 9572 ft., 12 mi. south. Virginia City itself is 5700 ft. above sea level.

The characteristics of top charging coke (coke 1) and stamp charging coke (coke2) were investigated. The weight loss ratios of two kinds of cokes with and without alkalis were measured after reacting with CO under the temperature of 2 900, 1000, 1100 and 1200 °C respectively. The microstructures of original cokes were observed by SEM. The experiment results show that, with no addition of alkali, the weight loss ratios of coke 1 and coke 2 were nearly the same under the temperature of 900 and 1000 °C. While the weight loss ratio of coke 2 was much larger than coke 1 under the temperature of 1200 °C. With alkali-rich, the weight loss ratio of the two cokes was almost the same at 1100–1200 °C.

In alkaline pulp, galena is depressed by sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC), while Cu(II)-activated sphalerite exhibits a high flotability so that satisfied separation can be achieved. In addition to hydrogen bonding, chemical bonding of NaCMC with galena is confirmed by IR; only hydrogen bonding is involved between NaCMC and Cu(II)-activated sphalerite. It is also found that the greater the degree of substitute and polymerization of NaCMC, the stronger the depressive effect of NaCMC and that lower stirring speed favors the depression.

ONE of the major uses of barium in metallic form is as a getter material in vacuum tubes. Because of the high chemical reactivity of the metal, Ba-Al alloys are extensively used. Numerous methods for the preparation of Ba-Al alloys have been published, a few of which1-4 are cited here. Most of these methods were found to be quite elaborate, involving the reduction of BaO, and not too well adapted for the close control of the final composition of small amounts of alloys prepared for laboratory use. A simple laboratory method for the preparation of Ba-A1 alloys in small batches starting from pure metals was devised, so that it was possible to control the desired compositions to within 1 pct. The pertinent features of the alloy system Ba-Al5 are 1) an intermediate compound BaAl, with the melting point of 1050°C, and 2) a eutectic between aluminum and BaAl4 at 98 pct Al. The accompanying sketch shows the experimental arrangement for the preparation of the alloys. Weighed amounts of aluminum and barium were placed in an alumina and a stainless steel crucible, respectively. According to the supplier's specification, the purity of the metals used in the alloys is as follows: a) aluminum rods—99.9 pct Al, and b) barium rods—99.5 pct Ba. The stainless steel crucible, tapered at the bottom and having a 1/16 in. diam hole, rested on top of the alumina crucible. The assembly was placed inside a graphite sleeve which rested on a refractory platform. The platform moved the assembly up and down through the field of a radio frequency coil. A glass bell jar was placed between the crucible assembly and the radio frequency coil to maintain a steady flow of helium around the melt. A small window was cut out on the wall of the alumina crucible to observe the progress of the re- action and to record the temperature with an optical pyrometer. The platform was first raised high enough to move the barium out of the radio frequency coil field in order to allow only the aluminum to melt. The assembly was then lowered so that the barium began to melt and flow out through the small orifice into the molten aluminum. In order to keep the violence of the exothermic reaction under control, the rate of flow of barium was carefully regulated by raising or lowering the crucible assembly. All the samples prepared by this technique were examined by a Norelco X-ray diffractometer using CuKa radiation, The diffraction specimens were prepared by placing the finely powdered samples in flat specimen holders. The Ba-Al alloys prepared with a high barium content were found to consist mainly of BaAl4. The structure of BaAl4 has previously been reported by Alberti and Andress.8 They found that BaAl4 was body-centered-tetragonal with an a0 = b0 = 4.530Å and c0 = 11.14Å. An alloy whose composition was found by chemical analysis to be almost 100 pct BaA1, was used to determine the relative intensities. The d-spacings were obtained from the same alloy to which a small amount of tungsten had been added as a calibrating material. Accurate values for a, and c, were calculated according to the method proposed by Taylor and Floyd.' The calculated values are: a, = b, = 4.566Å and c0 = 11.250Å. The measured d-values for BaAl4 are shown in Table I along with relative peak intensities above background and hkl indices. Acknowledgment The authors are grateful to L. J. "Conservation of slateWaste slate is a problem of outstanding importance in the slate industry, for a very large proportion of all slate quarried is thrown on the waste heap. While many uses for waste slate have been found, the demand calls for merely a fraction of the present supply of unused material. If the slate industry is to increase in prosperity, the producer's energy must be directed toward the development of ways and means of reducing waste to the lowest possible point. The Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior has devoted much study to this problem and a recent bulletin ** contains a detailed discussion of the waste problem.Attention has recently been directed toward an improved method of cutting slate in quarries, a method that promises to reduce greatly the percentage of waste material. The method has been introduced since that bulletin was published, and this supplementary paper covers the details of the process.A reversion in method,In connection with this new mode of operation history is repeating itself in a very interesting way, for the old quarry bar used years ago with steam drills, and later discarded in favor of the channeling machine .and the hammer drill, has been salvaged from the scrap heap, and again put to active use. The occasion for its employment is an attempt to improve quarry methods by the substitution of drilling for channeling or blasting."

"Fiber reinforcement has emerged as an alternative to steel bars in precast concrete segments due to advantages such as saving cost and reducing production time while developing a more robust product with improved handling and long-term durability. ACI recently drafted a new report as the first design guideline on FRC tunnel segments to provide specific guidance for this emerging technology. ACI document offers general information on the history of FRC precast segments from tunneling projects throughout the world; a procedure for structural analysis and design based on governing load cases, and a description of the material parameters, tests and analyses required to complete the design. This paper summarizes the design considerations in this ACI guideline prepared by the authors of this paper as the main contributors. Application of this guideline to design of a tunnel with an internal diameter of 5.5 m (18 ft) results in elimination of steel bars.INTRODUCTIONPrecast concrete segments are installed to support the tunnel excavation behind the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) in soft ground and weak rock applications. The TBM advances by thrusting off the completed rings of precast concrete segments that provide both the initial and final ground support as part of a one-pass lining system. These segments are typically designed to resist the permanent loads from the ground and groundwater as well as the temporary loads from production, transportation and construction. Tunnel segments are generally reinforced to resist the tensile stresses at both the Serviceability (SLS) and the Ultimate Limit States (ULS). With traditional rebar, a significant amount of labor is needed to assemble the cages and place the rebar, which results in higher production costs.Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) can be used to enhance the production, handling, and placement of precast concrete segments. This is because of the uniform dispersion of fibers throughout the segment to include the concrete cover, which is very advantageous for resisting the bursting and spalling stresses. These stresses develop as a result of the high loads induced on the segments during the TBM jacking process. The presence of fiber in the concrete matrix helps mitigate against unintentional impact loads during segment handling and tunnel construction operations."

Conventional ferronickel smelting has five main steps: Drying, calcination, prereduction, smelting and refining. In the scope of the current work, smelting experiments were conducted using Sivrihisar laterite ores (1.26% Ni) of Turkey. The ore samples previously subjected to drying, calcination and prereduction stages were smelted in alumina crucibles in a laboratoryscale horizontal tube furnace under argon atmosphere. Smelting experiments were performed at 1500, 1550 and 1600 oC. The amount of excess coal used in prereduction step was another variable. Sivrihisar laterite ore is a limonitic one with low MgO composition. Therefore, MgO was added to the smelting charge as a flux. The effects of experimental variables on metal Ni content and slag composition were investigated.

[On December 2, 1932, the Governor of California called upon the representatives of the mining industry of the State to attend a meeting at Sacramento to discuss ways and means of assisting is relieving some of its perplexing and extremely distressing problems, particularly the mounting cost of accidents which faces the industry with an industrial insurance rate for classification of $11.85 per $100 of pay roll, effective January 1, 1033. The significance of this fact is at once apparent when it is realized that the classification rates per $100 of pay roll for mining have steadily increased for some time, as follows: $3.91 in 1924, $5.54 in 1925 and 1926, $8.04 in 1927, $8.53 in 1928, $9.05 in 1929, $9.42 in 1930, $10.54 in 1931, $10.99 in 1952, and $11.85 in 1133. In other words, the cost rates have acre than doubled, wile statistics indicate that the accident rates nave shown an entirely different trend. At the meeting mentioned, one of the management officials sounded an effective keynote when he declared that a spade should be called: a spade. The perplexing problems of any industry can be approached best and remedies applied if that policy is kept to the front. It is appropriate to mention that high accident rates and a decrease in wages in recent years have unquestionably accounted in part for a unit cost rate, on a pay-roll basis; it also is well to explain that the policy years3 1926 to 1930, inclusive, are the years on which the accident-cost experience for 193: is based. That accident rates :lave not undergone the expected beneficial chance in California's experience is apparent in the words of a Bureau of Mines report:4]

The Lafitte field, the largest oil reserve in South Louisiana, is in Jefferson Parish, some 25 miles due south of the City of New Orleans. The discovery well, The Texas Company's No. I, Louisiana Land and Exploration Co., in the southeast corner of sec. 19, T. 17 S., R. 24 E., was completed on May 15, 1935. The initial production of this well was 960 bbl. of 34.9º A.P.I, gravity oil per day, through 1/4-in. choke, with a tubing pressure of 1600 lb. per sq. in. Producing depth was 9558 to 9572 ft., the total depth being 9572 feet. The development of the field has been at the rate of three to eight new producing wells per year. Up to Jan. I, 1944, 60 producing wells and three dry holes had been drilled, while two of the original producing wells had been abandoned, Although the field is not unitized, The Texas Company was the sole operator in the field until the Lafitte Oil Co. completed its NO. I Jefferson Parish, near the center of the west line of the NW/4 sec. 20, T. I7 S., R. 24 E., on July 27, 1941. No additional wells have been drilled by the Lafitte Oil Company. Drilling and WeLl-completion Practices All drilling operations have been conducted with the steam-driven rotary equipment mounted on submersible barges. A canal is dug to the well location and the drilling unit is floated into position. The seacocks are then opened and the barge settles to the bottom. After the well is completed, seacocks are closed and water is pumped out of the barge. This procedure permits the barge, with drilling equipment still in place, to be floated and moved off the location. The conventional open-hole and the gun-perforation method of completing wells has been used in this field. Where possible, the initial completion is from the deepest 'sand and recompletions are made progressively up the hole, by plugging back with cement to the upper sand and gun-perforating opposite the new sand. The oil string usually is 7 5/8 in., 26 to 34-lb. casing. Three wells have been completed using 9 5/8-in. 44-lb casing set below 10.000 feet. Fig. I shows the completion and recom-pletion practices on one well in the field. This figure also shows the relative locations of the different producing sands as shown on the electric well log. Structure The structure is an elongated dome, cut by two north-south faults, which divides the field into three segments. The west segment is the highest structurally and contains most of the recoverable oil and gas. The center segment is less important and the east segment is of little value. The CANMET Western Research Centre (CWRC) has developed a hydrocyclone model simulation of dewatering and fine particle separation circuits. The simulation is based on an existing empirical model. Utilizing a cyclone manufacturer’s published data, some modifications have been developed and integrated into the model. Feed stream characteristics, cyclone mechanical dimensions, and operating conditions are used in the CWRC modelling simulation. The computer results are presented in 3D graphs and corresponding 2D maps showing the cyclone mass recovery, percent solids by mass in underflow and overflow, and cut size as functions of the cyclone apex diameter and cyclone throughput (i.e., inlet pressure or pressure drop). Results of the computer simulation have been used in the economic feasibility and design of several dewatering circuits in oil sand plants.

ALTHOUGH the application of light metals in war materiel increased during the year, based on the number of uses, the trend in aluminum and magnesium production in 1944 was characterized by a sharp decline in the production of both metals accompanied by a further accumulation of large Government reserve stocks. Several primary reduction plants were curtailed to prevent building excessive inventories. By the end of the year, however, a lively revival of war production took place when resistance stiffened on the western front in Europe. Production of primary aluminum ingot was reduced from over 90,000 tons per month at the start of the year to 45.000 tons per month by the end of the year.

"Colorado School of MinesResearchers at Colorado School of Mines (CSM) have developed computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models to study gas distributions and explosion and fire hazards in longwall gobs. In underground coal mines, methane continuously emitted from surrounding strata mixes with air from active mine workings and may form explosive gas zones (EGZs). Some western United States coal mines are also prone to spontaneous combustion (spon com). Insight into oxygen concentrations within the gob is crucial for assessing spon com hazards and mitigation strategies. Nitrogen injection used in conjunction with progressive gob sealing can reduce EGZs and spon com hazards by forming a dynamic seal that separates the methane in the gob from the air that ingresses from the face. This paper describes CFD modeling simulations studying the formation of such dynamic seals by optimizing the nitrogen injection locations. The impact of nitrogen on oxygen ingress and formation of EGZs is discussed. Optimum nitrogen injection quantities and injection locations were determined. Dynamic seal formation is most effective if the headgate nitrogen injection locations are split between the first crosscut inby the face and a second location about 300 m (1,000 ft) further inby. INTRODUCTION Underground longwall coal mine ventilation systems are designed to dilute hazardous gases and to provide breathable air to miners working in the area. Methane gas is liberated as the mining process extracts the coal and disturbs the surrounding strata. Methane mixes with the ventilation air and often produces explosive gas zones (EGZs) within longwall gobs (Brune 2013). Past CFD modeling research of underground coal mine ventilation systems has shown the effects of face air quantity on EGZs (Worrall 2012) and nitrogen injection to control spon com (Balusu et al. 2005; Ren et al. 2012; Ren et al. 2011; Smith and Yuan, 2008; Yuan and Smith, 2014). Other modeling approaches include network ventilation models of oxygen ingress (Dziurzynski and Wasilewski, 2012), and coupled Linear Network CFD algorithms (Wedding 2014). In a project sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), CSM researchers are using Fluent®, a CFD software package by ANSYS, Inc., to model gas compositions and flows in underground longwall gobs. Figure 1 shows a progressively sealed gob with a U-type ventilation system in a three entry development. As the longwall advances, seals are constructed along the headgate in the crosscuts between the center entry and the gob. Additional gob isolation seals are built to block off the headgate entries inby the face. Nitrogen is injected through the seals in the first two crosscuts on the headgate side and at the first crosscut inby the face on the tailgate side, as shown in Figure 1."

About 74% of global seismic energy release occurs in the Circum-Pacific zone. Worldwide, about 71% of seismic energy release is in the form of shallow earthquakes, 27% as intermediate, and 2% as deep earthquakes. Seismic energy release is variable in time and has been shown to correlate with the amplitude of the Chandler wobble. It was high during the period 1949 to 1967, and is now at a rather low level, with the latest earthquake over M = 8.0 having taken place in Indonesia in 1971. The average worldwide recurrence rate for the expected largest magnitude earthquake (M "9.5) has been estimated as several tens of years, in marked contrast to the several tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of years separating the largest volcanic eruptions. Geological studies are needed to establish reliable mean intervals between large earthquakes, and to detect the e;:istence of long-term fluctuations in the ste of occurrence. Seismic gaps have proved seful in static forecasting of large earthquakes, by identifying places where closer study of the variation with time of seismicity, deformation, and other parameters, may lead to the dynamic p_ediction of time, place and magnitude of earthquakes. The model of stress concentration at asperities explains the main features of seismicity in the Circum-Pacific. Slow earthquakes have been detected instrumentally, notably an event immediately preceding the 22 May 1960 Chile earthquake, the largest this century. It seems likely that this type of deformation may explain both instrumentally detected and macroscopically observed pre-seismic deformation, as well as unusual animal behaviour reported before some earthquakes. Seismic and volcanic events are interdependent, with large earthquakes commonly triggering eruptions. Melting of rock and intrusion of magma is likely to accompany many earthquakes.

This paper describes a lightning warning system (LWS) in operation at the U.S. Bureau of Mines' (USBM) Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC) from December, 1989 to April, 1991. An electric field mill measured the DC atmospheric electrostatic field. Also, an economical on-line weather data service provided lightning location maps and other weather information. A system such as this can significantly improve the safety of explosive handling. The use of these two methods addresses the detection of thunderclouds building overhead and the prediction and tracking of developed storms. Warning reliability of the system was very good when data from both sources were considered. Experience showed, however, that use of either system alone would not provide adequate reliability in most situations. Some problems occurred with the field mill and there is some question whether the instrument is compatible with harsh mining environments or could be made portable. Another method ' of measuring electric field based on fiber optics is discussed. This technology may be able to overcome the problems with field mills.

Su mineralización está relacionada con el intrusivo del mismo nombre, encontrándose el centro más efectivo de la mineralización en el stock San Francisco, mientras que la paragénesis observada en las estructuras estudiadas es compatible con el zoneamiento existente; ya que las primeras capas depositadas son de cuarzo y pirita, siguiendo la esfalerita, enargita, calcopirita, tetrahedrita, esfalerita y galena; rellenando las cavidades se encuentran los carbonatos.
