DuRing the early mine development period, 1929 and the first part of 1930, a 300-ton pilot-plant concentrator was built at Nkana mine of the Rhokana Corporation, Northern Rhodesia. This plant operated from May 26, 1930 until Oct. 26, 1931, treating 101,080 tons of Nkana ores and producing 4372 tons of concentrate. The plant was built, primarily, as a test unit to determine the grinding characteristics, floatability, etc. of the Nkana ores and other ores of the Rhodesian copper belt and to supply sufficient data on which to base the design of a 5000-ton concentrating plant at Nkana mine. The test unit operated wholly on development ores and no attempt was made to grade or select the ores from any section of the mine. The average assays for the 17 months of operation are given in Table 1. The first ground was broken for the 5000-ton concentrator during June, 1930, and the construction of the plant was completed in November, 1931. The plant started on Dec. 10 and has operated continuously since that date: The whole of the concentrating plant is compact and closely connected, yet with sufficient space for expansion of all sections up to 20,000 to 25,000 tons per day capacity. Mining operations are carried on along a length of about four miles on the easterly limb of the Nkana syncline. This length includes the North orebody, from which all production has thus far originated, and the Mindola orebody, now being developed for production. The ore-bearing measures in the North orebody are leached for some 75 ft. below the surface; the oxidized zone varies in vertical extent from 100 to 150 ft. Experimental studies of the axial distribution of particles along dry ball mills are described. The results, for mills ranging in diameter from about 10 cm to 1 meter and operated in both the batch and continuous modes, indicate a consistent pattern of significant migration of particles away from the ends of the mill. In some, but less frequent, cases axial migration of the grinding media is also observed. Analysis of the data suggests that particle migration results from end-effects which extend for a distance of about one mill diameter along its length. End-wall roughness appears to play a significant role in the particle migration phenomenon. Media migration is generally associated with continuous mills operating at relatively high powder flow rates.

A new engine family has been developed by Caterpillar Tractor Co. for application in off-highway trucks. This family, the 3500 Series is available in three configurations, covering a 600-1200 kilowatt range. This engine series incorporates the latest in design technology, stringent functional specifications for servicing ease, fuel economy, reliability, optimum performance and parts interchangeability. "The Antamina project, owned by BHP Billiton Plc, Mitsubishi Corporation, Noranda Inc., and Teck Cominco Ltd., is a $2.3 billion copper/ zinc project, located in the Ancash Department of Peru. The project consists of an open pit mine, a 70 000 ton per day concentrator, a 302 km long concentrate pipeline, port facilities, a new access road, power line, and town site. The project is designed to produce up to 1.5 Mtpy of copper and zinc concentrates over a 23 year project life, and will be the third largest producer of zinc and the seventh largest producer of copper in the world.This mega project is the largest mining investment in the country and, during its construction stage, was the most important construction project worldwide. On May 28, 2001, Antamina commenced testing operations and four months later, it reached commercial production. Antamina was officially inaugurated on November 14, 2001 by Peruvian president Alejandro Toledo.The construction stage of the project generated 8000 direct jobs, with a peak of 10 000 employees, and 30 000 indirect jobs. The permanent workforce consists of approximately 1650 employees, the vast majority of which are Peruvian Nationals, around 30% of whom came from the region where the deposit is located. Approximately 5600 indirect jobs were generated from the project. Independent sources state that Antamina increased the Peruvian mining exports by 30% (mining exports constitute 50% of Peru’s total exports) and Peruvian GDP by 1% in its first year of full operation in 2002.Since winning the privatization bid for the project in 1996, the company has implemented an approach to community development and environmental protection based on sustainable development principals. Throughout the development of the project, a number of initiatives have been undertaken to ensure full involvement of the local populations in community development activities and the company’s environmental program.Due to its size, difficult logistics, cultural considerations and financial aspects, the project has faced a number of unique challenges in the area of environmental protection and management of community interaction. Antamina has been innovative in its approach to these issues and, as a result, has set new standards in Peru for environmental and community management and sustainable development."

The Non-Time Critical Forest service CERCLA Action at Mansfield Canyon, Santa Cruz County, Arizona designated previous locators of unpatented mining claims as owners/operators of the Hazardous Waste Facility, retroactively liable for all reclamation costs including reclamation of mines acquired by the Forest Service. The CERCLA Action is based on non-existent tailings, a non-existent permanent resident, inaccurate and unreliable data and did not review or consider prior USGS and USBM data. The consequences of the Forest Service action include(1) reduced exploration, (2) loss of credibility, (3)public disillusionment and distrust.

In attempting to study precipitation from a tetragonal lattice, using solid solutione of bismuth in tin, it was found that although a Widmanstätten pattern is observed1,4 only a qualitative analysis of the orientation relationships is possible, because of the unusual structural changes that accompany the precipitation process. Microscopical Studies Alloys were made from Chempur tin (Standard samples 42b and 426, National Bureau of Standards), and bismuth (Kahl-baum C.P.) by melting weighed quantities together under palm oil, stirring well, and castilig in a heated graphite mold. The polishing and etching techniques employed largely govern the visibility of the structural changes. The preliminary surfacing operations were similar to those recommended by Villela and Bergekoff,5 through Behr-Manning 3/0 abrasive papers, lubricated by a solution of paraffin in kerosene. A rough metallographic polish was next given, using a thin cotton cloth charged with relevigated alumina (maximum particle size of about 4µ) and soap solution; repeated etching and polishing served to remove disturbed metal. For high-power examination better preparation was necessary. It was found that on such soft metals the threads of the fabric, rather than the abrasive, cause most of the scratching. Cotton outing flannel, which had been brushed so that the nap lay down, was fairly satisfactory, but a heavy grade of silk velvet (not the noncrushable kind) was found to be better, especially after some use. A better procedure was as follows: The metal lap was warmed slightly, and a 4-in. circle of woolen broadcloth was cemented to its center by a thin film of melted paraffin. The broadcloth was then moistened with water, and a 30 to 40 per cent solution of sodium hydroxide heated to about 50°C. was poured over it, allowed to stand for I to 2 min. and then washed off. It was neither necessary nor desirable to remove all the sodium hydroxide from the cloth, since its etching action aided in the removal of the flowed layer from the sample. The cloth was then charged with a paste of the relevigated alumina in water. Since this lap did not remove deep scratches, it was necessary previously to polish the specimen on some material such as the silk velvet. The sodium hydroxide softens and partly gelatinizes the woolen lap covering, permitting a scratch-free polish, but its action continues, and the cloth deterioratcs after about 24 hr. This is not serious, because a new lap can be prepared in about 5 min., and only small pieces of cloth are used. Etching with a strongly acid solution of ferric chloride was found satisfactory for removing the flowed layer. For the final etching, the most satisfactory reagent was that of Tafls,7 the formula for which is: FeC13.6H2O, 2 grams; HC1, 5 c.c.; H2O, 30 c.c.; C2H5OH (95 per cent), 60 C.C. THE study and use of low-carbon manganese steels have been curiously neglected in the general history of developments in alloy steels. Hadfield1 made an extensive study of manganese-iron-carbon alloys about 1886, which culminated in the wide application and use of Hadfield austenitic manganese steel. His alloys were nearly all high in carbon, as compared with the steels discussed in this paper, and he found a marked tendency towards brittleness in the alloys of medium and low manganese content, that is, below 7 per cent. manganese. As a result, there has been a widespread prejudice against the use of manganese steels containing between 1.0 to 3.5 per cent. manganese with comparatively low carbon. Steels of this composition have never been studied adequately in comparison with other alloy steels, and have had little use in practice. In a very recent paper by Sir Robert Hadfield2 the following statement appears: ?. . . manganese-iron alloys with little or no carbon do not seem to offer any practical employment; they only become valuable in the presence of quite high percentages of carbon, 0.90 to 1.50 per cent." The results of the present investigation are so contrary to the findings of Hadfield that the writers feel fully justified in presenting the preliminary report incorporated in this paper.

Occasionally, in the design of deep foundations for a structure, a single deep foundation element may be used to support a building column. The most common type of element used in such cases is a drilled shaft (also referred to as a drilled pier, caisson, or bored pile). However, as installation capabilities have improved, large diameter augercast piles are increasingly more common. While drilled shafts and augercast piles differ significantly in construction methods, in the eyes of the International Building Code (IBC), both are treated as cast-in-place deep foundations and must comply with many of the same code provisions. Deep foundations are required to be braced such that lateral stability is provided in all directions, however isolated, cast-in-place elements that have a diameter (D) of at least 2-feet and a length (L) not more than 12 times the diameter can be an exception. In response to the concerns raised by some member professionals, the Deep Foundations Institute’s (DFI) Augered Cast-in-Place Pile and Drilled Displacement Pile Committee took a closer look at the code and its applications, the historical development of the code language through the years and performed analytical modeling to evaluate the impact of this ratio on a pile’s stability. The question is whether the limiting ratio included in the IBC 2018 code provisions is justified, or whether different criteria should be used to determine when isolated deep foundation members are allowed.

There is a strong demand for nickel metal due to quick development of stainless steel and new electrical materials, most of which is extracted from sulfide resources, resulting in a serious depletion of sulfide resources. Therefore, more attentions have been paying to extracting nickel from nickel laterite, which accounts for some 50% of total nickel metal production. In this paper prereducing?magnetic separation?reduction smelting process is developed to manufacture ferronickel rom two types of nickel laterite DN and GN, assaying 1.42% 1.83% Ni and 49.09% 26.08%Fetotal, respectively. Mineralogy of two types of nickel laterite was determined and optimization of process parameters was conducted to manufacture ferronickel. Prereduction?magnetic concentration process is used to upgrade low grade nickel laterite firstly, two kinds of Ni-Fe concentrates being prepared of DN assaying 2.26% Ni and 69.45% Fetotal and GN containing 2.76% Ni and 38.00% Fetotal. Finally, two types of ferronickel were produced by reduction smelting of prereduced concentrates DN and GN, DN and GN ferronickel contains 2.97% Ni and 6.58%Ni, 89.25%Fetotal and 89.95%Fetotal, respectively. The total recoveries of Ni and Fe of the two ferronickel are beyond 90% and 80%, respectively. There is significant difference in grade of magnetic concentrates and ferronickel between DN and GN laterite due to their different mineralogy, the former belongs to limonitic laterite and the latter saponite one. There are some advantages for this process to manufacture ferronickel from nickel laterite, including effectively upgrading low grade nickel laterite by prereducing?magnetic separation technique, higher throughput and lower energy available for reduction smelting section due to some 40% gangue being rejected in pre-upgrading section, and much less metallurgical coke consumption by using non-coking coal as reductant for prereducing?magnetic separation?smelting process.

THIS paper describes the results of microscopic examination of a series of brass pipes removed from apartment and office buildings in New York City, adjacent localities on Long Island, and Philadelphia. They were selected as typical of approximately four hundred pipe specimens obtained over a period of five years during an investigation of corrosion in hot-water installations. A part of the investigation is reported in this paper and includes a brief history of the pipes, a description of their inside surface and microstructure, and a study of the effects of corrosion, with particular reference to the structural aspects of local and selective dezincification. Although the bibliography on the corrosion of brass pipes is quite extensive, it refers almost entirely to corrosion in sea water. The authors believe that their examination of this series of pipes, which had been subjected to the corrosive action of fresh water for various lengths of time, may throw some additional light on the problem of corrosion. PIPES EXAMINED The pipes were made by different manufacturers and their sizes range from ¾ in. to 4 in. nominal inside diameter, the majority being within I to 2 in. They can be divided into two groups according to chemical composition: (I) with a copper content of 60 to 62 per cent and (2) with a copper content of 65 to 68 per cent. The first group (pipes made of Muntz metal) comprises 22 pipes and the second (pipes made of high brass) comprises 18 pipes. The pipes had been in service in various locations in the hot-water systems of the buildings involved. Some were taken from horizontal lines in the basement, some from overhead distributors and some from vertical risers. The distance, in terms of feet of pipe, of the specimens from the hot-water generator was no less than 75 ft. and often 100 to 300 ft. In the majority of cases the water-heating equipment was provided with a regulator to limit the temperature of the hot water supply. The normal range of temperature in pipe systems of this kind is 100° to 160°F. WATER SUPPLIES The average chemical composition of the water supplies carried by the pipes is shown in Table I. In evaluating the corrosiveness of a natural water, four factors are considered of prime importance: namely, hardness, alkalinity, pH and silica content. The waters listed in Table I are characterized by relatively low hardness, low alkalinity, low pH and low silica content. The waters of lower pH and higher CO2 content are more corrosive. On many occasions during construction and service life of the structure, it is crucial to know the load in post tensioning tendons and anchors. Although there are many methods to measure the tendon force, most of them are cumbersome, expensive and the accuracy differs depending on the method used Dyna Force sensor uses the Elasto-magnetic technology (EM) and non destructive testing (NDT) to direct measure stress level in prestressed strands or bars installed on ground anchors or post tensioning tendons. Dyna Force sensor can be used to rapidly read the change in load during proof and performance tests and compare with the pressure gauge and during the life on the anchor to monitor existing lock-off load. It can be used also to determine the load along the bonded length of the anchor allowing the contractor to increase or decrease this length. The paper presents Dyna Force operating principle and some applications. In conclusion, the Elasto magnetic technology applied through Dyna Force is a new and easy to use approach to monitor anchor load during proof test and service life of the structure.

Contract H0242013 was originally to evaluate through underground tests, water spray systems for controlling respirable dust at the face of a longwall plow. A number of difficulties were encountered which made such an evaluation impractical. The contract was modified to evaluate, in the BCR dust tunnel facility, the live factors believed to affect respirable dust levels. A 60-foot long; plow face mock-up was constructed in the dust tunnel, a facility with controlled airflow and dust concentration. Six types of nozzles were tested with the following parameters: two nozzle orientations, two levels of water pressure, two levels of airflow, and with and without simulated airflow through the gob. Of these factors, the most significant in reducing respirable dust levels was nozzle orientation, where the nozzle directed 45 degrees downstream resulted in 27 percent lower dust levels than those directed 45 degrees upstream (against the airflow). Following in order of effectiveness were the higher water pressure and the lower airflow. All nozzles tested resulted in similar dust reduction, i.e., the type of nozzle was the least significant factor.

With the burgeoning opportunities for new gold mines to be developed the opportunity now exists for a reassessment of the optimal processing path for these gold ores. Projects have traditionally followed the path of whole ore cyanidation with either Carbon In Pulp (CIP), Carbon In Leach (CIL) or Merrill Crowe. The challenge ahead is whether these traditional processing methods are the best option for stakeholders, or to go beyond CIP and use a combination of currently available technologies that can be used to provide gold recovery at a significantly reduced capital cost and minimal deleterious impact on the environment. Either stand alone or combinations of gravity concentration and flotation, can produce a gold bearing concentrate that can then be fed directly to a batch or continuous intensive cyanidation unit. Treatment of a gravity/flotation concentrate by intensive cyanidation may be processed by the InLine Leach Reactor (ILR) developed by Gekko Systems of Australia. The advantages of the technology combining gravity/flotation followed by intensive cyanidation are significantly reduced capital costs; improved safety due to reduced cyanide inventories; the majority of tailings un-contaminated by cyanide; less energy required due to an opportunity for an increase in grind size û reducing green house gas emissions; detoxification of concentrate tailings can minimise tailings disposal and containment requirements.

This list of organizations that conduct research and development programs on coal has been compiled by the Bureau of Mines with the thought that such a directory may provide a useful guide to worldwide research efforts in the areas designated and may facilitate communication between organizations with similar interests. This list includes government, university, private, and commercial organizations. Many of these groups are conducting comparatively modest but often particularly interesting or specialized investigations. The areas of investigation have been defined in a broad manner--these include analysis and constitution, mining and geology, preparation, combustion, briquetting, high- and low-temperature carbonization, gasification, hydrogenation, Fischer-Tropsch, and health and safety. In some instances such information is not available, but the names of the organizations themselves often indicate immediate arias of interest. Special publications issued by and describing the work of each organization have been cited, when known; almost all of the organizations also publish results of their investigations in the technical press. Several foreign technical and trade publications that include such information and are not published directly by any of the organizations listed are cited in the pages following the list of organizations in each country. This list is not complete. Information that would improve coverage and/or accuracy will be welcomed by the Bureau of Mines.

Severe roof control problems have plagued a West Virginia underground mine since its initial development in the late 1970's. Adverse roof conditions in the Eastern portion of the reserve result from a combination of mining: - perpendicular to the major principal horizontal stress direction, - near lineament intersections, - in areas where the ratio of horizontal stress to vertical stress exceeds 2.00 to 4.00, and - where laminated strata are present in the immediate roof. The focus of this study is to identify the engineering (mine orientation, roof safety factor) and geological parameters (lineament and horizontal stress orientation, horizontal to vertical stress ratio, and immediate roof lithology) causing poor roof conditions and to quantify their influence on projected mining conditions in the Western portion of the reserve Rose diagrams were used to illustrate the correlation between the orientation of eight hundred thirty-six (836) roof falls with that of forty-four (44) lineaments and the principal horizontal stress Similarly a composite map was used to demonstrate the relationship between roof falls and the ratio of horizontal stress to vertical stress The immediate roof strata across the property were categorized as either laminated or non-laminated based upon a thorough examination of one hundred sixty-two core logs. The presence or absence of fireclay, a rider coal, and carbonaceous shale was also noted because of the historic correlation with poor roof conditions. Rock strength and physical property tests were conducted on selected immediate roof strata recovered from coreholes drilled along the mains projected to the Western portion of the reserve Potential roof control problems in the Western reserve were quantified based upon the correlations developed by analyzing engineering and geological data The main conclusion is that laminated roof strata, the rider seam, and its associated fireclay will have the greatest influence on mining conditions. Roof problems attributable to horizontal stresses will not be as severe in the West due to an increase in overburden depth and corresponding decrease in the stress ratio. Recommendations are provided for mining orientation, the layout of mains and submains, panel location, and roof support based on intended service life.
