Electrostatic separation of non-conductive materials can be accomplished by triboelectric charging. The efficiency of convential separators becomes worse in the size range below about 100 ¦m. These problems are solved by developing a new double-drum-separator. The investigations have shown the possibility of separating very fine mineral mixtures (eg quartz/calcite) in a strong electric field after tribo-charging in a special dust-feeder. The paper reports about the influence of particle size and field intensity on the separation and deals furthermore with the problem of desagglomeration.

Increasing global demand for commodity metals and capital and the greater operating costs of mining and metal production present significant challenges for the metals mining industry. Current conventional technologies may not be feasible for processing deposits of declining grade, challenging mineralogy or those that occur at increasingly greater depths. To overcome these issues, the development of a step-change technology such as in situ recovery (ISR), which reduces mining and avoids milling costs, may be vital in ensuring future economic metal production. ISR has been used extensively to treat porous soft rock deposits such as the water-soluble salts, sylvite and halite. Although ISR has typically been used for mining conventionally uneconomic uranium ores, it has also been used less frequently for the treatment of other restricted permeability hard rock deposits, such as those containing copper and gold. The reason for the limited uptake of the technology for hard rock mineralisations is primarily due to low natural rock porosity and permeability and hence poor response to available lixiviant. However, additional challenges include solution containment, management of groundwater and regulatory, ecological and societal requirements and expectations. CSIRO has focused on understanding the challenges of hard rock ISR and identifying global capabilities that can contribute to developing the essential enabling technical areas required to realise ISR. Specific focus areas include geochemistry and advanced resource characterisation; drilling and controlled rock-breaking technologies; solution chemistry and environmentally benign lixiviant systems; lixiviant delivery systems and ‘subsurface mixing’; subsurface hydrology and reactive transport mechanisms and models; downstream processing options; legal, social and environmental aspects; and techno-economic modelling. This paper will discuss ISR challenges including industry feedback focused on addressing this issue, gaps preventing ISR from being applied in practice, capabilities to overcome these gaps and the development of a collaborative approach to making hard rock ISR a reality.CITATION:Kuhar, L L, Breuer, P, Robinson, D J and McFarlane, A, 2015. "Removal of radium from uranium tailings would substantially lessen their environmental impact because it would eliminate, or greatly reduce, the hazards arising from radon emanation, leaching of radium, dust dispersal and gamma radiation. A process is described to extract radium from tailings by leaching in 3M Nael solution. The radium can be rapidly leached at ambient temperatures by either multi-stage contact in agitated vessels or washing on a tailings filter cake. Extraction efficiencies ranging from 80 to 94% have been measured for tailings derived from a number of Australian ores.Methods for radium recovery from the leach solution by precipitation, ion exchange and adsorption have been examined. Precipitation as barium/radium sulphate appears to be the most suitable approach. A possible flow diagram for the process is proposed which involves recycle of the saline leach liquor.IntroductionDisposal of mill tailings is the most contentious environmental issue facing the uranium mining industry. The conventional approach to managing tailings is to store them in a dam above ground. Attempts have been made to stabilize some tailings piles by physical or chemical methods. In a few cases, the tailings have been covered with earth and revegetated. However, most tailings piles from abandoned mills are in a neglected state and subject to the erosive and dispersive forces of nature. The cost of remedial action is high. The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has estimated that it will cost up to $130 million to rehabilitate abandoned mill sites in the U.S .A..Environmental authorities are now insisting that uranium mining companies improve their methods of tailings disposal. In the United States, the preferred approach is burial, either in mines or in specially excavated pits. Tailings retention systems as operated in Canada are regarded as storage facilities until an acceptable method of disposal is found. In Australia, the Fox Commission recommended that tailings from the Ranger project should be returned to the open-cut mine. Returning tailings to the mine has considerable merit, but it is not always a viable option. In many underground operations, it is not physically possible to fit all the tailings in the worked-out mine. In other cases, the groundwater hydrology of the mine may be unfavourable."

Historically, underground mine rescue teams have received training only in the course of actual emergencies, or in simulated mine environments, usually on the surface, with placards to identify objects and hazards. Also, while U.S. Federal Regulations require all underground miners to walk escapeways and conduct fire drills every 90 days, this does not fully prepare them for the conditions that may be encountered in real escape situations, such as smoke filled entries. This paper describes technology and realistic training simulations that have been identified for the general workforce and mine emergency responders. Of all the technology evaluated by underground personnel, laser lights and lifelines were most beneficial in leading personnel to safety and out of the mine in smoke-filled passageways. These technological advancements can improve the state of readiness for rescue personnel and increase the chances of survival for personnel escaping from underground emergencies.

In terms of throughput, product size and power draw, grindcurves provide a measure of the response of the mill performance to changes in mill operating parameters ? usually mill filling. Since presenting the principle in 2006, grindcurves have been applied to a wide variety of AG and SAG mills. Mill response has been carefully measured for variations in: mill fillings from 15% to 40%; throughput by a factor of two; power by 50%; feed blends; liner profile; and mill speed from 65% to 80%. The outcomes of this extensive program of work are presented as the measured grindcurves. How they have enhanced our understanding of mill operation and how they may be applied to practical daily mill control is discussed. It is proposed that this technique provides a viable and valuable mill control tool that may find extensive application in the industry.

Resu1ts of experinmental measurernents of heat capacities and thermal conductivities of some typical porous rocks are presented. Measured heat capacities agree closely with va1ues calculated front known chenlical . compositions of the rocks. On the basis of this agreement, heat capacitir.7 of fluid-satttrated rocks were calc~ililted. Therrnal conductivities of the rock samples were measured under varioits conditions of fluid saturation. From these data therrnal dif-fvsivities were calculated. A significant variation of thermal diflusivity with trnlperature is indicated. Knowledge of the thermal characteristics of fluid-bearing porous rocks has become increasingly important with the development of thermal oil-recovery processes. Reliable thermal data for petroleum reservoir rocks are not available and approximate values are generally assumed for reservoir calculations. 'The effects of temperature, pressure and fluid saturation on thermal properties of porous rocks have not been carefully studied. The purpose of the present work was to measure and report the thermal characteristics of some typical porous rocks. A group of eight sedimentary rock samples, including limestone, shale, sandstone and silt-stone, was selected for the study. Properties reported include heat capacities, thermal conductivities and thermal diffusivities. The effect of fluid saturation on these properties was also considered. Determinations of thermal properties require precise measurements which are time consuming and difficult to reduce to a routine basis. Methods have not been developed for measurement of thermal proper-ties under conditions of pressure, temperature, and fluid saturation, which may be encountered in thermal recovery processes. As one approach to these problems, some preliminary work on methods of estimating thermal properties from other more readily measurable characteristics of the rock-fluid system is reported. The samples selected for the studies were oilfield cores from within, or closely associated with oil-productive zones. Descriptions of individual samples are given in Table 1. Clay minerals present in the samples were determined by differential thermal analysis (DTA). Quartz content was estimated from DTA cooling curves. For all but the thermal conductivity tests, a representative 200-gm sample of each core was disaggregated, thoroughly extracted in diox-ane and oven dried at 100°C. The cleaned and dried sample was care- fully split into appropriate portions for the several tests. Chemical analyses of the samples were obtained to permit calculations of heat capacities by methods which are outlined later. Resuits of chenlical analyses are given in Table 2. Heat contents of the test samples were measured by a Runsen-type calorimeter. The heat content of the unknown sample is measured relative to the known heat content of platinum. The apparatus is referred to as a relative error type because of the comparative measurements, and has the advantage of canceling systematic errors. Experimental results are reproducible within 0.5 per cent. A temperature base of 298.16 K is taken for heat content measurements. Measurements were made at five temperatures (260, 440, 620, 800 and 980° F). It was necessary to preheal the sample above the maximum experimental temperature to eliminate volatile constituents. Assuming the weight loss on pre-heat, ing was mostly water, a correction to the observed heat content was made to account for the water originally present in the sample. FRP is a proven material for the solvent extraction processes of copper production. There is a history of successful applications of FRP piping and equipment in hydrometallurgical processing. The performance of FRP equipment has not always been consistent, but at no fault of the material. Its non-metal attributes and behavior vary from those of more typical materials of construction, such as steel and alloys. FRP is a mainstay material in many areas of solvent extraction and electrowinning and yet not well understood by all. We will discuss the critical concerns, which are key to reliable performance of FRP systems. This paper will include discussion of key elements, which are fundamental to reliable FRP piping design and considered best practices. Essential design and construction considerations to maximize reliable service life of FRP equipment, such as thickeners and process vessels, used in copper extraction and processing, will be discussed. Additionally, we will expose potential pitfalls and share lessons learned from previous copper processing plant projects, which can aid and impact other copper processing projects to ensure best system performance and reliability. INTRODUCTION The corrosion resistant attributes of fiberglass reinforced plastics (FRP) make it an attractive and cost effective material of construction in corrosive service applications that are found in copper processing. FRP is used all over the processing plant in seawater, brine and sulfuric acid services where the corrosive nature of these services would challenge most ferrous materials and coatings. FRP is a fully customizable material to meet the specific needs of each service and process. FRP piping and equipment can be found throughout the hydrometallurgical process, in the acid plant, desalination, leaching processes, solvent extraction and electrowinning to name a few. Beyond its superior corrosion resistant characteristics, FRP can be made abrasion resistant by introducing particulate additives into the resin, such as silicon carbide and alumina oxide. Because many of these services have combustible organic elements in the flow streams with accompanying safety concerns, the linings can be made conductive with carbon fibers to dissipate static charges that might collect on the surface of the equipment otherwise. Further, FRP can be made flame retardant as well, where flammability may be of concern.

Many challenges are faced by workers in lower-seam (42 inches or less) mines. The lower-seam heights confine mine workers to their knees as they perform their daily tasks such as installing roof bolts, delivering supplies, repairing belt, or cutting coal. Miners working in these lower seams often consider kneepads to be their only line of defense against knee injuries. However, healthy knees do not start and stop with kneepads. Other interventions such as changing postures, proper hygiene, and work station design may also be used to reduce mine workers? risks for developing knee injuries. Incorporating these and many other interventions into a mine worker?s ?way of life? is an important step to ensuring a long, healthy career and retirement. Keeping knees healthy is also a key aspect to reducing costs in low-seam mines as the industry battles rising health care costs, and training/recruitment of replacement workers is time-consuming and costly. Educating the workforce about the possible interventions to reduce knee injury risk is a primary objective for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). Therefore, NIOSH researchers, along with industry and academia, developed a training package to educate the mining com­munity about some possible interventions beyond kneepads that may be used to help decrease knee injury rates. Increased awareness and simple changes are the first steps to reducing knee injuries.

A SEARCH of the records indicates that evidences of accumulations of petroleum and natural gas within the boundaries of British Columbia were discovered at approximately the same time as were those of Alberta. They probably would have been developed as soon bad it not been for the fact that they are in such uninhabited parts of the Province. Even today, the seeps of the Flathead area, and the later discovered extensive seeps of the Peace River area, have been seen by very few people. From the geological evidence, there is reason for believing that British Columbia soon will be a petroleum producing Province. Fifty-eight operators, both companies and individuals, are now backing the money and the effort which they have invested with us, for the most part within the last three years, in a belief that this is so. The promulgation of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Act in 1947 marked the beginning of a new phase with regard to the exploration and the development of our petroleum and natural gas resources. Since August 15th, 1947, the date on which the Act came into force, the area under exploration bas increased from a few thousand acres, held by lease under the Goal and Petroleum Act, 1986, to 10,460,115 acres, including all active permits, licences, and leases. In addition there are 192,720 acres under application, bringing the total under issue and application to 10,652,835 acres. The total area is comprised of 105 permits, 20 licences, and 26 leases under the 1986 Act. The permits and licences, which ?represent active exploration and development, are held by a total of 82 companies and 26 individuals.

"Double oxide films (bifilms) are significant defects in light alloy castings that occur when, during melt handling, the oxidized surface of the melt is folded over onto itself and then entrained into the liquid metal, encapsulating a portion of the local atmosphere. These defects create crevices in the final castings and have been shown to decrease tensile and fatigue properties, and also to increase their scatter, making casting properties unreproducible and unreliable. This paper reports on two different experiments performed to study the behaviour of such defects in Al alloys. In the first experiment and as a proxy for a bifilm, air bubbles were held in an Al-5Mg alloy melt for varying periods of time before the melt was allowed to solidify. The composition of the gas content of the bubbles was subsequently analysed using mass spectrometry to ascertain how it changed with time. In the other experiment the influence of the age of bifilms on the mechanical properties of Al-5Mg castings was assessed by holding castings in the liquid state for different times before solidification, followed by mechanical property testing and SEM and EDX studies of the fracture surfaces of tensile test bars. This research could provide a better understanding of the behaviour of double oxide film defects, and may lead to the development of new techniques by which these defects could be eliminated, or at least deactivated, in light alloy castings. Introduction One of the major structural defects affecting the reproducibility of mechanical properties of aluminium castings is the double oxide film defect (El-Sayed and Essa, 2017; El-Sayed and Ghazy, 2017). This type of defect is usually created as a result of poor filling system design. Owing to the very high reactivity of liquid Al-Mg alloy with oxygen in the air, the surface of the liquid metal can be considered to be permanently coated with an oxide film (Weigel and Fromm, 1990). As a consequence of surface turbulence, the oxidized metal surface can become folded over onto itself, but not fused, and then submerged into the bulk liquid, with a portion of the mould atmosphere being entrapped within it (Campbell, 2003; Al- Sayed, 2016; El-Sayed, Hassanin, and Essa, 2016)."

FURTHER study of data used in determinations of 1—rates of diffusion of boron in austenite and 2—solubilities of boron in the a and phases of iron and steel' has provided an equation for the diffusion of boron in a iron. In brief, the previously published data were accumulated from the results of deboron-izing (and decarburizing) experiments carried out in the range of 700° to 1300°C. Diffusion coefficients (D?) for boron in austenite were calculated using the Grube solution of Fick's law. However, only solubility values were estimated from the discontinuous concentration-penetration curves, Fig. 1, which are characteristic of diffusion in two phases. Dr. Carl Wagner' has recently provided a solution for calculating D values from penetration curves of this type as follows: Cl1.1 —C8/C8- C11.1 = vp ? e ? erf (?) and D = ?/4?2 t where C11,12, C8, C11, and E have the values shown in Fig. 1. D is the diffusion coefficient, sq cm per sec; t is time of deboronizing anneal, see; and ? is a di-mensionless parameter. For a given diffusion experiment, the value of ? can be readily obtained by graphical solution from a plot of y vs the right-hand part of Eq. 1. D may then be evaluated from Eq. 2. The avplication of this solution to previously re-ported results, of which excerpts are given in Table I, permits the calculation of diffusion coefficients for boron in a iron. On the basis of these meager data, it is tentatively concluded that the diffusion of boron in a may be represented by the equation Da = 1011 e-92,900/RT where R is the gas constant, cal X 0C-1 X mol-1; and T is the absolute temperature, OK. Although the frequency factor, 106 sq cm per sec, is admittedly several orders of magnitude higher than expected, the value of Q, 62,000 cal per mol, appears reasonable and is, in fact, very similar to that for the self-diffusion of iron. It is pertinent to mention at this point that the value of Q obtained for the diffusion of boron in austenite by means of the Wagner solution is 19,000 cal per mol and is in excellent agreement with the value previously reported1 in the equation DT = 2xl0-3 e-21,000/RT [4] which was determined by the application of the Grube solution to other data. The fact that determined constants A and Q in the equation D? = A e-Q/RT were practically the same, independent of whether the Wagner or Grube solutions were used in determinations of D values, strengthened the authors' belief that the computed values of D (Table I) using the Wagner solution are reliable. The relative values in Eqs. 3 and 4 for the diffusion of boron in the a and ? phases, respectively, suggest that boron forms a substitutional solid solution in a iron and an interstitial solid solution in ? iron. The same tentative conclusion has been reached by McBride et al.3 on the basis of relative solubilities, atom diameter, and the size of the interstitial hole in a and ? iron. In connection with the data for test 14 listed in Table I, it is of interest to calculate the solubility of boron in a iron using the D value given by Eq. 3. As might be anticipated from the small movement of the interface in test 14, proper substitutions in Eqs. 2 and 1 give a low value, approximately 0.0004 pct B, at 850°C. Apparently at 835°C (test 13) it is possible to obtain 0.0018 pct B, and at 850°C only 0.0004 pct B into solution in the a phase before a second phase appears. These observations are consistent with the Fe-B constitution diagram proposed by McBride, Spretnak, and Speiser.3 References P. E. Busby, M. E. Warga, and C. This paper describes results from small scale tests conducted to determine the distribution of impulse on target plates when subjected to loading due to the detonation of a buried mine. The tests were conducted with saturated sand, dry sand, and water as the loading media. Tests were conducted for flat plates and for plates with angled bottoms. Previous testing has shown that angled bottoms can reduce the total vertical impulse delivered to the vehicle significantly. Different stand off distances were investigated as well as loading of the targets both on center and off center. It is very important to know not only the total impulse delivered by a detonating charge but also how this impulse is distributed over the bottom of the vehicle. A complete understanding of specific impulse will permit those parts of the vehicle, taking the greatest amount of loading, to be sized properly. Experimental results were compared to analytical expressions provided by Westine and Tremblay.

The density, porosity, and strength of rocks are fundamental in the design of geo-engineering projects. Determining these properties requires the preparation of smooth core samples, which is usually impossible for soft rocks. Besides, only fragmented samples may be available in some projects. A method for predicting rock properties from rock particles such as drilling debris would therefore be useful. This study was undertaken to develop prediction equations for compressive strength (UCS), tensile strength (BTS), density, and porosity values from the crushability index (CI) obtained from rock fragments. The results showed that UCS, BTS, density, and porosity were strongly correlated with the CI. The physical characteristics and strength of rocks may be predicted with the help of the derived equations. The CI test is a valuable tool for estimating rock properties in drilling projects and in situations where core specimens are not available.

PAPER FOR PRESENTATION The President: "This paper is entitled 'The Design, Erection and Operation of a Purlex Plant at Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company Limited'. It is presented to the Institute by Mr B. G. Meyburgh, a visitor to our Institute. He is a graduate of the University of the Orange Free State and is the Uranium Plant Superintendent at Buffelsfontein and he, therefore, is in a very strong position to describe this very excellent job which is being done as he has been associated with this plant from the inception." After the presentation of the paper the President said: "Gentlemen, the paper you've heard from Mr Meyburgh is a very concise and interesting account of an important piece of work, and I think the title is so completely descriptive of the subject, which is admirably set out in the paper which you have heard. You probably haven't all had the opportunity of reading it, but you very soon will. I found it interesting to note that the results predicted were surpassed in the operation of the plant to date. The actual results obtained are significantly good, I think. Any process which, in this country, increases production and decreases costs, is to be welcomed, particularly when it is so necessary for South Africa almost to bend over backwards to utilise every avenue available in order to increase the scope of the production for overseas' markets, of her metallurgical and mineral potential. In lighter vein-and there is no reason why we should always be so serious-I am glad to see that, in a scientific journal like this, such words as the American word 'crud' which I have been picked out about so often, because my grandchildren use it, is now given an aura of respectability. Thank you very much, Mr Meyburgh, for an interesting paper. We have a long list of contributors, and I am not going to waste any more time. Current machine learning models used for roof fall hazard prediction are mounted on expensive sensors, computationally expensive, or lack the robustness for accurate prediction in the underground mining environment. This research aims to provide a design methodology for a robust, low-cost, deep learning-based algorithm for underground mine roof fall hazard prediction. A data sampling plan is developed to ensure the replicability and robustness of the developed model. In addition, feature engineering and transformation methods are described to identify relevant features for hazard identification. The methodology described here will be used in model development, tested, and implemented as a real-time mobile device application. The new tool will be expected to detect roof fall hazards in real-time and contribute to a crowdsourcing approach for underground hazard detection.

The real gross national product (GNP) advanced at a annual rate of 3.1 % during the second quarter, following a revised 3.4% increase in the first quarter (see table 1). Export growth continues to play an important role in the rising output. Combined with the decline in imports, it resulted in a noticeably improved trade position. Imports of consumer goods, including automobiles and food, fell while exports rose. Imported cars have been losing ground to domestic cars. The foreign car share of the U.S. market fell from 36% in October 1987, to 29% in May 1988. Business spending for new plant and equipment contributed strongly to the GNP increase. Equipment purchases, particularly of computers, rose at a 14.8% annual rate, following a large first-quarter gain. Purchases of structures rose 11.8%. The other key component of business spending, change in business inventories, declined from the first quarter. Inventory buildup in late 1987 had been considered excessive.

Work related pulmonary diseases are in the top TEN causes of occupational disability and death in the United States. Likewise, it also ranks high inmost of the other industrial countries. It is difficult to know the true occurrence of occupational lung disease because of poor documentation. This is especially true when one examines workers’ compensation claims. Most frequently, silica and asbestos are paramount in our discussion of work related pulmonary disease. Little consideration is given to other “dust-related” diseases, irritant reactions, reactive airway responses, and hypersensitivity reactions. The major classification of occupational lung diseases will be discussed. This includes both acute and chronic disease that arises in the work place, especially, the mining industry. It’s more important to make an accurate evaluation and diagnosis for the prevention of disease among other workers.

Investigations were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to develop flowsheets for the recovery of tungsten and gold from four Alaskan scheelite-bearing ores. Basic gravity concentration and cyanide leach tests were performed on all samples. About 46 pct of the tungsten and 30 pct of the gold from one sample were recovered in a gravity concentrate containing 24 pet W03 (tungstic oxide) and 119 troy ounces per short ton (tr oz/st) Au. Froth flotation of the gravity concentrate resulted in separate tungsten and gold products with grades of 38 pct W03 and 2,720 tr oz/st Au and recoveries of 60 and 97 pet, respectively. Additional gold was recovered from the gravity and flotation tailings by cyanidation. Overall recoveries of tungsten and gold from this sample were 28 and 94 pet, respeetively. A flowsheet with mill design parameters was developed that consisted of (1) free gold and scheelite recovery by gravity methods and froth flotation and (2) fme-grained gold recovery by cyanide leaching of reground gravity and flotation tailings, followed by a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuit. Data were developed from the Bond mill work index, gold and tungsten flotation, conventional and high-rate thickening, cyanide leaching, and CIP adsorption tests.
