I. INTRODUCTION. IN the summer of 1908, R. B. Cochran, Superintendent of the Compania Metalurgica Mexicana at Sierra Mojada, Mexico, presented to the Department of Geology and Mineralogy at Case School of Applied Science an interesting series of silver-, copper-, and lead-ores from the Veta Rica mine. These ores contained several interesting minerals which were associated in a somewhat peculiar manner, so that I was impelled to make a closer study of their occurrence. The investigation has brought out several new facts concerning the geology of the district and the geological occurrence of the ores, and therefore has seemed worthy of record. Two papers have been published previously about the region, one by Chism1 in 1887, and the other by Malcolmson2 in 1902. These articles, however, treat of the district more from the stand-point of the metallurgist and mining engineer, and not much attention is devoted to its mineralogy and economic geology. II. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION OF THE DISTRICT. The Sierra Mojada is situated in the extreme western part of the State of Coahuila, near the Chihuahua boundary. It is reached best via the Mexican Central railroad from El Paso, Tex., to Escalon, Chihuahua, a distance of 494 miles. From this point, a branch line, the Mexican Northern railroad, runs 78 miles in a NE. direction to the mines, which are its northern terminus. Synergies between copper and lead extractive metallurgical processes enable the processing of a broad range of polymetallic materials. However, this complexity also brings some challenges expressed in terms of complex intermediates and final products. For instance, based on the limited solubility of Cu and Ni in crude lead bullion additional phases will appear during the crystallization of the melt. Beyond the need for continuous optimization of metallurgy the control of phase solidification is a further important pillar to achieve a more efficient process by minimizing the amount and cycles of reverts. This paper describes the microscopy study of one of the most relevant intermediate in the Cu and Pb metallurgy, the Cu based alloy and highlights the importance of applying a well-controlled cooling sequence to improve the overall process efficiency. INTRODUCTION One of the key aspects in Aurubis’s 2025 vision is to move towards the implementation of a multi metal recovery strategy. The implementation of this new multi metal vision is supported by the long tradition of the company, founded in 1866 as Norddeutsche Affinerie, and further developed by adopting modern copper smelting and lead smelting technologies for the processing of primary and secondary materials. The combination of these assets have already build the basis for processing of complex materials in the copper and lead circuits implemented in Aurubis’s facilities. The addition of a new smelting facility, will enhance these capabilities. Aurubis current flowsheet combines Cu, Pb and Zn metallurgy. This includes primary smelting of copper concentrate, processing of secondaries (residues, slimes, slags) and recycling materials (scrap, shredder material, e-scrap). These broad range of materials contain not only the mentioned base metals but also a number of minor metals that requires to be properly managed to ensure efficient recoveries and quality of the targeted metals.

"Virtual reality, a 3D computer-generated environment, has become a recognized delivery system for many forms of education. This paper describes the application of virtual reality to mineral processing education. An interactive mineral processing visualization module developed at the University of New South Wales, Australia, provides users with an overview of a base-metal concentrator and details about how the mined ore progresses through stages in processing. The module also involves developing instructional based plant layouts and flowsheets in the virtual environment. These assist the user in understanding the essential components of the base-metal concentrator.RÉSUMÉ La réalité virtuelle (RV), un environnement en 3D généré par ordinateur, est devenue un système de prestation reconnu pour diverses formes d’éducation. Cet article décrit l’application de la réalité virtuelle à l’éducation dans le domaine de la minéralurgie. Un module interactif de visualisation du traitement des minerais développé par l’université de Nouvelle-Galles du Sud, en Australie, offre aux utilisateurs une vision d’ensemble d’un concentrateur de métaux communs ainsi que des détails concernant la progression du minerai extrait à travers les différentes étapes de traitement. The simulated environment is achieved through technologies such as 3D graphics, audio feedback, and special peripheral devices to produce interactive environments.Virtual reality has been used in diverse fields including medicine (Riener & Harder, 2012), entertainment (Hsu, 2011), military (Manojlovich, Prasithsangaree, Hughes, Chen, & Lewis, 2003), manufacturing (Zimmermann, 2008; Jiang, 2011), and chemical processing (Squires, Andersen, Reklaitis, Jayakumar, & Carmichael, 1992; Schofield, Lester, & Wilson, 2005). Virtual reality is also becoming the recognized delivery system for education in many fields, including engineering (Bell & Fogler, 1996, 1998; Shin, 2002). For example, VR laboratories have been designed and developed to teach users fundamental features of heterogeneous catalytic mechanisms and absorption columns (Bell & Fogler, 1995), the multi-phase and multi-component blast furnace iron-making process (Babich & Senk, 2009), and to guide users to identify various safety measures while working in a real laboratory (Bell & Fogler, 1996)."

MINING methods and customs in many districts of England are to this day strangely bound about by the records and traditions of the past. In some mining fields this is more apparent than in others, yet it is everywhere in evidence, for Cornwall with her mines under the sea, Wales with her famous quartzites, and Derbyshire with her remarkable cavern deposits, are all tinctured with quaint customs that have come out of the almost forgotten past. Here, modernism has never replaced tradition, and many of the laws are woven of the woof and warp of ancient custom. Indeed, these things exist because they have come to be part and parcel of the civil laws. And these laws are observed with meticulous care and accorded all the reverence due their venerable age. All activities pertaining to the mining of metals are hedged around by curious and ofttimes clumsy laws, each minute and trivial detail being covered by the civil code, and each petty law enforced by an ofttimes pompous official.

A stick of explosive is a package of stored energy that can be released when needed to blast rocks, coal, and other materials; but, unlike fuels such as coal and gasoline, its potential energy is self-contained, there being enough oxygen within the package to complete the almost instantaneous reaction. When an explosive is ignited or detonated, the solid or liquid materials of which it is composed are converted rapidly into highly heated gases, which, if free to expand, would have a volume many times larger than that of the original explosive. At the instant of explosion these gases occupy only the volume of the shot hole and are therefore produced at a very high pressure, which causes the material that is being blasted to be broken or disrupted. In blasting coal efficiently the proper placement of the shot hole and the confinement of the explosive therein are both of prime importance. When these are not adjusted properly, only a small amount of the energy is expended in bringing down coal, consequently the balance of the energy tends to be expended by the emission of a flame into the working place that may lead to a gas or dust explosion. Permissible Explosives Defined The term "permissible explosive", as applied by the Bureau of Mines to explosives it has approved for use in blasting in coal mines, embraces not only the requirement that the explosive, when used, shall be similar in all respects to the basic sample that passed all the tests necessary for its admission to the published permissible list, but also that the explosive shall be used under certain prescribed requirements.

It seems to the writer that no very important improvements require to be made in order at least to keep up the present production for many years to come. The application of aerial photographs to all phases of geologic mapping is set forth, indicating the advantages to be gained in different types of country and undcr varying climatic conditions. Methods of field and office procedure are given from a geological point of view, as well as suggestions regarding the best methods of aerial mapping for different uses and under varying field conditions, including the study of submarinc geology. Aerial photographs with accompanying geologic maps are shown to illustrate the appearance from the air of different geologic features under varying climatic and topographic conditions. Introduction The following paper is in no sense a contribution to knowledge; it is merely an attempt to indicate some of the benefits that may be expected from the use of aerial photographs in geologic mapping and to mention some inherent limitations. The writer has used aerial photographs in his own work for the past 13 years and has had ample opportunity to observe their use in the hands of others. From this experience certain conclusions have been drawn, which may be helpful to those using aerial photographs for the first time. It must he remembered that a photograph of the earth's surface can delineate only that which the eye can see; therefore the geologist should not expect more from an aerial photograph than he would be able to observe were he in the photographer's airplane looking at the area to be photographed. Theoretically, if the geologist had sufficient artistic ability, he could draw as good a geologic map from his position in the plane as he could from observation of the photograph. Practically this cannot be done because the airplane moves at a high rate of speed, which in itself prohibits detailed observation and, no matter how great the geologist's artistic ability, he could not reproduce the detail that can be recorded by a camera. An aerial photograph is a picture map of an area. The picture may be studied in the office until the geologist is thoroughly familiar with every minute detail of the surface of the ground he is about to geologize. In this study, numerical simulations of yield pillars employing the finite element method with time-dependent Drucker-Prager material model are conducted. The stress control mechanism of yield pillars on weak floor strata is studied. The development of pillar yield zone, the distribution of pillar stress and the development of failure zone in the weak floor strata are investigated. The study indicates that a properly selected yield pillar size may significantly reduce the peak stress induced in the weak floor strata and effectively control the development of failure zone in the floor.

"During the previous decade, the role of spray-on liners within the mining industry was limited to providing a corrosion resistant coating to screen and bolts; however, increasingly, liners are being used as ground support products. Expanding use and testing of liners have demonstrated their ground support function, yet the definitive support mechanism is still under debate. The most promising theory is the retain/hold/reinforcement concept (Kaiser et al.,1992). This conceptual theory has been the basis for the recent underground trials at INCO where, specifically, shotcrete and MIROC Mineguard were tested in two trials to further define limitations and applications of each liner.In a cursory overview, shotcrete is becoming accepted as a support product, while Mineguard is only slowly gaining acceptance.This discrepancy is the result of the corresponding life-spans within the industry, whereby shotcrete has had wide-spread use for decades, yet Mineguard has only recently been introduced. Currently at INCO, shotcrete is primarily used: to provide support in poor ground conditions, to add stability when developing through backfill, and to provide damage control in seismically active mines. It is also used to protect production headings and secondary-blasting chambers from fly-rock damage during blasting. Despite an obvious support function of the liner, shotcrete has always been used in addition to bolts and screen. Comparatively, Mineguard is still in the testing stage, where the greatest potential is increased productivity for applications in multi-tasking development headings. In this scenario, Mineguard provides instant support to replace screen, and bolts temporarily. When the heading has advanced, the drill and support crews work in tandem, drilling off the next round and installing bolts for long-term radial support, respectively. Other potential applications of Mineguard are within production headings to replace screen in the back, and screen and bolts in walls. The potential for both liners to replace conventional support is clearly war-ranted, such that defining the support role was the primary goal of the two underground trials."

BY the term making an "electrical log" the authors designate an operation conceived for the purpose of determining electrically the characters of formations traversed in drilling, the determination being carried out by means of measuring the electrical resistivities of the rocks along the uncased portions of drill-holes. As in the case of an ordinary core record, this process connotes a geological studs of the strata, and for that reason it is given a similar designation. The paper is divided into three parts, of which the first deals with the resistivities of rocks in general, since it is through this electrical parameter that they are to be characterized. The second deals with the technique, and the third with the description of practical applications of the electrical logs.

Grinding and classification circuits at Climax Molybdenum Co. are described. Since the installation of a direct digital control computer in 1974, a number of control strategies were developed and evaluated. This paper deals in particular with the practical experience and results obtained in direct digital control of a wet grinding circuit consisting of a ball mill, constant speed sump pump, and hydrocyclones. For this circuit throughput is maximized, while maintaining a desired product size. Product size is inferred from measurement of operating variables.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report identifies the types of serious accidents that occur most frequently at small underground coal mines and describes the strategies that could help prevent these accidents. A wide variety of methods for improving safety are suggested, including improvements in the design of equipment, work procedures, work schedules, safety programs, and emergency response plans, as well as techniques for diagnosing the potential hazards associated with new technologies and work procedures. Some of the papers in this volume focus on preventing specific types of mining accidents--ones associated with materials handling (primarily back injuries), equipment maintenance, improper machine guarding, and ground failure during retreat mining. Although the recommendations in this volume are heavily influenced by research performed at underground coal mines in the Appalachian coalfields, most of the papers contain advice that is equally pertinent to almost any type of mine.

This is a tutorial paper on industrially successful approaches for nonlinear process monitoring. Online process monitoring is essential to continuous operation of plants at high efficiency. The problem of process monitoring is one where an impending but undesirable process condition has to be identified and used to alert process engineers. This problem has traditionally been solved by practicing engineers using statistical techniques that detect a change in the underlying correlation structure of process variables. For linear correlation structures, algorithms such as principal components analysis, independent component analysis and partial least squares have been proposed. However, many industrial processes exhibit nonlinear correlation structure between the process variables. In this tutorial we describe various nonlinear monitoring techniques and elaborate on two recently developed methods, namely Support Vector Machine and Local Linear Embedding. The two methods are evaluated by application on two experimental case studies, a SAG mill and a polymer extruder.

The management and operation of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are often neglected until the process plant has to shut down as a result of this negligence or as a result of a catastrophic failure as was the case during the recent TSF failure in North America.TSFs are often regarded as non-assets and do not receive the attention they deserve in terms of technical expertise and financial provision. A TSF is not a simple structure but a complex and dynamic structure that changes throughout its operational life. The operational life of a TSF is the period in which there is the greatest opportunity for risks to occur. The failure of a TSF is normally not as a result of a single event but as a result of a consequence of events. These events are often not recognised in time due to a number of factors.Process plants and slurry pumping systems are operated at suboptimal conditions in order to maintain throughput. At the same time, the tailings properties are compromised in terms of slurry density and particle size distribution amongst other things. Tailings deposition cycles and drying cycles are not well understood and the tailings management strategy is not well tuned in terms of maximising consolidation and improving in situ densities. Pond control is also neglected. These are aspects that form the keystone to the effective utilisation of available deposition area as well as the frequency and cost of future embankment raises.Apart from operational issues, forward planning in terms of budget requirements, increases in tailings throughput, embankment raises, pipe replacements, etc are normally put on the back burner. Available deposition space at the time seems to render this planning obsolete.The bottom line is that responsible tailings management and proper forward planning can limit liability and reduce the bottom line in terms of cents per ton if correctly implemented by suitably qualified tailings managers and engineers.The aspects that need to be considered as part of responsible tailings management are highlighted in this paper.CITATION:Boshoff, J, 2015. Coleman Quartz Inc. has a long history as the sole U.S. producer of lascas for the cultured quartz growing industry based on its unique deposits in Arkansas. Since 1989 the company has also been producing metallurgical grade silica for the ferrosilicon industry from a deposit of unusually pure Arkansas novaculite. This paper chronicles Coleman's trans-formation of an abandoned railroad ballast quarry into a generator of $1.5 million in annual sales to a nontraditional novaculite market. Potential additional applications for this high quality silica rock will also be mentioned.

Manganese (Mn) ferroalloys are chiefly consumed in the steelmaking process as a deoxidizing agent or as an alloying element to produce high-quality steels. These alloys are typically produced in a submerged arc furnace using coke, fluxes and manganese ores of a specific manganese/Fe (Mn/Fe) ratio. Preferred-grade manganese ores should have Mn content greater than 46 percent and Mn/Fe content greater than 5 to produce commercial-grade, high-carbon ferromanganese [1]. Selective mining of high-grade Mn resources has created a scarcity of these resources, which is emerging as a major challenge for the manganese and steel industry. Manganese ore resources are mainly distributed in South Africa, with about 32 percent; Ukraine, with about 17 percent; Australia, with about 17 percent; and Brazil, India, China, Gabon and Mexico, with lesser amounts.

Newmont?s Phoenix mine started production in March of 2006. Due to the extreme hardness of the ore, the mill has struggled to meet throughput projections. Grinding studies showed that optimizing the existing circuit would not achieve budgeted throughput. These studies also showed that the pebble crusher was being underutilized due to the inability of the SAG mill to break the rock. The concept was developed to supplement the feed to the existing pebble crusher with a secondary crusher. Models of this process looked favorable so a portable crusher was installed to test the process. The temporary crusher was successful at increasing the throughput by 7% and based on the operating data, plans are currently being developed to install a permanent secondary crushing system in front of the SAG mill. This paper will review the results from the test crusher and the flow sheet for the permanent secondary crusher.
