The technology of heat treatment for metal frequently includes multiple fast heating and cooling of the products surface. If the product is heavy-weight or long-size, its moving from a zone of cooling to a zone of heating and return require a long time. Other important condition of ensuring qualitative surface at heat treatment is intensification of cooling phase. It is known that turbulization of a flow activates heat exchange and increases efficacy of cooling without increasing volume flow rate of water. Additional difficulty is to ensure the regularity of heating and cooling on length of a product. The technology of cyclic heat treatment of rolling products, at which mobile zone of turbulent heat exchange is formed on the surface of a product, was developed and realized. The submission of water occurs through to face spray systems. Each of the systems has six long-range atomizers, which are located circularly. Two flows of water move towards one another along a surface of a product. When they collide, the right zone of turbulent heat exchange creates heat transfer in this zone of 10-15 time more intensive than on other surface of a product. The effect of moving turbulent zone on length of a product is reached by changing the proportion of volume flow rate of water, which is created by face sprays. The speed of movement for turbulent zone along a surface of a product is chosen so, that the cooling takes place on a small depth only. Then after passing the turbulent zone over a determined site of a surface, its temperature recovers fast owing to hot internal layers. The parameters of process were determined by mathematical simulation of cooling in an installation. The equations for dynamics of movement of collision point of flows, which were received this way, are interesting supplementary products of research. The experiments show that frequency of movement of turbulent zone is an important technological parameter. It defines mechanical properties of a surface and should be chosen depending on a profile of product and metal grade. The results of comparison of mechanical properties of a surface of various rolling products, which were received by developed and conventional technologies, are described in this report. Dependence of regularity of mechanical properties on frequency of movement of turbulent zone is adduced.

DURING the spring of 1910 I visited a number of open-pit brown-coal mines and underground workings in the vicinity of Halle, Halberstadt, Leipsic, Cologne and Bonn. The notes which I took and the observations which I made at the time have been condensed and make up the principal part of this paper. Certain supplementary information has been taken from several sources which are given in the paper. The mining of brown coal is one of the important industries of Germany. The coal varies in color from dark brown to almost black and is soft like loam. Pieces of wood and strips of bark and, even parts of tree trunks are frequently encountered in the excavation although the coal for the most part consists of a pulverulent, more or less matted mass of small particles of vegetal matter. It is a product between peat and lignitic coal. An analysis, taken from Coal Resources of the World shows the approximate composition of the material: Moisture, 53.73 per cent.; ash, 4.98; fixed carbon, 18.08; volatile carbon, 23.31 per cent. The principal characteristic is the amount of moisture. This seldom runs less than 48 per cent. The ash is usually low and ranges from 5 to 10 per cent. The sulphur content is usually less than 0.5 per cent. The heating effect of the fuel ranges from 2,000 to 2,500 calories.

Increasing use of continuous miners, especially the boring type, has focused attention on the inadequacy of face ventilation in coal mines. The bulk of the machine, the rapid advance of working faces, and the increased liberation of methane from the larger expanse of freshly exposed coal surfaces have created ventilation problems that were unknown with conventional mining equipment. Ignition of gas, especially that caused by machine bits striking hard rock or pyritic inclusions, have increased at an alarming rate. As the mines penetrate beds under thicker cover at an ever-increasing rate of face advance, this problem will probably increase unless face ventilation is improved. A previous survey, described in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 5414, Auxiliary Ventilation of Continuous Miner Places, disclosed that auxiliary fans with tubing generally improved circulation of air and removal of gas at the face. The study here reported attempts to examine, face ventilation at various mines and to note any plan or innovation of. air coursing that industry might adopt to reduce the danger of gas ignition. Nearly all of the sulphur produced in the world today is converted to sulphuric acid and 49 % is used in the manufacture of fertilizers. In the last few years we have seen the beginning of another chapter in the volatile history of sulphur as the severe shortage of 1963:-67 has been transformed into present-day surplus. Prospects for further aggravation of this situation in the years ahead seem assured. In 1970, western world production showed a rate of increase of 4 -5%, which 1S somewhat less than that of 8% for the period 1963-1967. The rate of growth of consumption dropped considerably in 1968 when the demands of the fertilizer industry fell. During the same period of time, wide-spread demands have been set in motion for a clean environment which indicates that a fundamental change in sulphur supply, demand, and even sources, is likely to result from this upheaval. The sale of sulphur by Poland to the western world has increased and for 1970 was estimated at over one million metric tons. Does mine-sampling show the commercial value of a coal, and if so, how should it be done ? This question is often asked, but seldom answered. During the past summer, while engaged in securing coal for the Government coal-testing plant at St. Louis, I had an excellent opportunity to obtain information on t,his subject, and the results seem to furniih an answer to the question propounded above. Sampling for the U. 8. Geological Survey Coal- Testing Plant. In organizing the work of the testing-plant, it was decided that coal, in car-load lots only, would be accepted for testing; also that this coal should be loaded under the immediate supervision of a representative of the plant, so as to be certain that the car-load sample would be representative. As an additional check on the work, two mine-samples were to be collected from each mine visited, and these samples, as well as the sample from the car when it was received at the testing-plant, were to be carefully analyzed at the chemical laboratory established in connection with the plant and operated under the direction of Prof. N W. Lord of the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Mine-Samp1ing.—Mine-samples were collected with great care by me and my assistants, Messrs. J. Shober Burrows, John W. Groves and Frank W. De Wolf. The dominant idea in the regulations adopted for mine-sampling mas, that it should be done in such a manner that the sample would have the same composition as the commercial output of the mine.

The electrolytic separation of silver and gold has been practiced by the refineries in the United States for a good many years, and probably because of frequent visiting between officials of plants and the consequent exchange of views, operations in the various silver and gold refineries are very similar. We find, for instance, they practically all use electrolytes of approximately the same composition, which, no doubt, is more the result of experience than of studies of electrolytes. At the new electrolytic parting plant of the U. S. S. Lead Refinery, Inc., East Chicago, Ind., considerable attention has been given to the composition of electrolytes, especially to their conductivity and their effect on the character of the silver deposit. We are not aware that anything has been recently published on this subject and are, therefore, presenting such data as we have with the idea that, although it will not be wholly new, it may stimulate interest in the subject. Effect of Copper Content on Conductivity The first work was to determine the specific conductivity of silver nitrate and copper nitrate solutions. Concentrated solutions of silver nitrate and copper nitrate were prepared by dissolving analyzed chemically-pure salts in distilled water, and determining the silver and copper in each. Definite amounts of the concentrated solutions were taken, mixed and diluted to a definite volume. The silver and the copper were determined in each of these solutions and the conductivity was then determined. The plotted results are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The effect of increasing quantities of silver and copper is readily seen. A comparison of the two sets of curves shows conclusively the benefit of holding the copper content of the electrolyte above 5C g. per liter, as its effect is to increase greatly the conductivity in an approximate propor-

Plating iron with copper has received great attention from practical and scientific men, but, aside from the deposit secured by immersion of iron in copper salts, by electro-plating, or by welding together thin sheets of iron and copper, these efforts have met with no success. Failure of these efforts, in the production of copper plating, has been due to the fact that the conditions normally and necessarily present in the plating operation are antagonistic to the production of copper-plated iron. In most, if not quite all of them, a bath of molten copper has been used. The temperature of a molten copper bath is so high that the iron becomes oxidized before it can be immersed in the molten copper, and unless a protective flux for the molten copper is used, the surface of the copper will become oxidized, and, in any event, the plated iron will oxidize immediately on its being withdrawn from the molten bath. I recently had the pleasure of visiting the works of The Metals Plating Co. at Elizabeth, N. J., where I witnessed the plating of iron sheets with copper by a new process.l The plating metal is applied to the sheet in the form of a liquid mixture by means of rolls, such as inking rolls. The sheet, after being coated with the mixture, is automatically carried forward and deposited on a link-belt conveyor, which carries it through a furnace maintained at a temperature well above that of molten copper. The basic principle involved in this method lies in the application of the plating metal to the sheet while the sheet is cold and then melting the metal in place on the sheet under conditions which are favorable to the formation of the plating. Plating Mixture The liquid plating mixture is composed of either copper oxide or finely divided copper, or a mixture of both, ground to the consistency of a light varnish in a crude oil having an asphaltic base, of a specific gravity of from 14" to 16' Be. "Global economic development has drastically increased energy consumption in various fields, and CO2 emissions, which are a prime cause of global warming, have continued to increase. Therefore, measures for reduction of the load on the environment have been taken in various areas. Energy improvements of various types of work vessels used for offshore construction might be expected to greatly reduce consumption of fossil fuel, because many of these vessels are larger than land construction machinery and consume large amounts of fuel, which will lead to effective use of resources and alleviation of the load on the environment. However, such efforts are unusual because renewal or newbuilding of work vessels is rare. We developed a work-vessel hybrid energy system based on fuel-saving technology and use of natural energy to promote reduction of CO2 emissions for a large deep mixing barge in 2010. We developed an Automated Generator Start-Stop System, which automatically controls the number of active generators according to power demand during ground-improving work of the deep mixing barge in 2012, thus further improving the work-vessel hybrid energy system. These systems are introduced here.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, CO2 emission, which is one of the factors of the Global Warming has been increasing. According to the report by National Institute for the Environmental Studies in Japan (2014), CO2 emission in Japan has amounted to 1,276 million tons. The industrial sector in the total emission becomes 500 million tons that is equivalent to 39%. Meanwhile, the offshore Deep Mixing Method requires work vessels mounted with a large power plant (Fig. 1). In sea ground boring, very large load acts on the deep mixing machine, and the large power is required, which results in the increase in CO2 emission. To achieve eco-friendly marine construction, the work-vessel hybrid energy system was developed. Table 1 shows specifications of the deep mixing barge with the work-vessel hybrid energy system."

Some years ago, when I was seeking an illusive fortune and gaining a precarious existence in the primeval forests of Brazil, there penetrated, even to my headquarters in that far-off land, the story of a new-found mining district, where mountain peaks were ribbed with silver, and valleys teemed with virgin gold. Such were the stories that caused hundreds of men to seek their fortune in Sierra Mojada, and to return heaping curses, loud and deep, upon the vivid imaginations that had evolved the glittering fiction. Nevertheless, the rumors had some foundation of truth. The ribs of silver exist, if not the placers of gold; and a flourishing town, of some three thousand people, with two leading mining companies and several smaller ones, in operation, represents what was permanent in the excitement of 1879. Geographical Situation. The town of Sierra Mojada is situated in the State of Coahuila, Republic of Mexico, in latitude 27' 24' N., and longitude 26' 40' W. of Washington, 4' 36' W. of the City of Mexico, and 103' 43' TV. of Greenwich. It lies about 70 miles, in an air-line, N. E. of Escalon station, on the Mexican Central Railroad; but by the present wagon-road, which makes a long detour to turn the mountain range, the distance to the station is about 105 miles. The nearest towns are Huajuquilla, in the State of Chihuahua, about 125 miles due west, and Cuatro Cienegas, in the State of Coahuila, 112 miles to the eastward. Between these points and the town of Sierra Mojada, and to the north of this town, the country is an immense desert, entirely uncultivated, almost uninhabited, and very little known. This

The bainitic Fe-C-Si alloys with optimum content of retained austenite serve as ?containers? for storing of hydrogen. Both the vacancies of fcc lattice and the possibility of forming hydrides of silicon and other alloying elements will be used. The idea is based on our scientific hypothesis. There is the silicon threshold (Si=0,50%) in "Fe-Si" system and Fe-C bainitic alloys, above which it causes self-organized phenomena: sudden increase of hydrogen solubility and amount of retained austenite in the alloy after ??ß transformation, formation of two supersaturated solid solutions <a??r>, "rejuvenation? and its reverse process. Rapprochement of iron atoms when Si=0,50%, causes appearance of new covalent forces where uncompensated electrons of 3d-subshell are involved and it provokes synergetic phenomena. They ?free? silicon atoms from the previous bonds. After that silicon itself becomes a getter of hydrogen using vacancies (14) of 3P2(6)d0(10) subshell and it results in sudden increase of hydrogen solubility in metal. Simultaneously sudden decrease of iron activity takes place. That in its turn ?releases? the carbon. Thus, its redistribution, controlling the bainitic transformation, is hastened. It stipulates for creation of ?brittle bainite" B[a(C,H)+?r(C,H)] after ??ß transformation. While weathering of metal, "rejuvenating", hydrogen diffuses in ?islets? of retained austenite and ?relaxed bainite? (B[(C)+?r(C,H+H)]) is obtained. When heating austenite ?(C,H) is obtained, and after cooling ?brittle bainite? is obtained, etc. Presented scientific hypothesis explains the available experimental facts ("rejuvenation? and its reverse process, graphitization, weldability, forming of flakes, reaching high strength, etc.) in a new manner, as well as, gives real opportunity for creating of new trends in many fields, e.g. iron based HAA. Provisional data having been obtained are encouraging.

With some difficulty we framed the picture of the village on the mountain getting in the railroad bridge and tunnel at the base. It was a charming scene of red-tile roofs on a green mountain in the golden autumn sunshine with the black hole of the railroad tunnel looking like something out of the movie, "The Train." We clicked the shutter, advanced the film and started back to our rented Audi. At which point there was a hail from the other side of the railroad bridge. A man in uniform was brandishing an object in the air which looked suspiciously like a rifle. We peered around. We were the only other persons in view. He must be yelling at us. He was now closing the distance at a brisk, determined gait but was still 100 yards away. The car was handy but the road was straight, paralleling the railroad tracks for some distance. We dismissed the idea of running for it. Who knows, he might shoot. When he came up we didn&apos;t have much of a conversation because it had taken us a week to learn three words of Yugoslavian-zhiveli, long life, huhvalla, thank you, and schlivavitza, the national drink (plum brandy). None of these seemed appropriate. We got the Idea that photographs of railroad tunnels and bridges were prohibited. The guard, for such he seemed to be, took the Audi plate number, administered a last scowling reprimand and stalked off. This incident was the only one in a 15-day visit to Yugoslavia which we would have associated with "Iron Curtain restrictions."

An empirical equation is presented for the maximum airblast from unconfined charges. This has been tested at a number of sites and with charges ranging from 0.1kg to 311kg. The equation is developed to predict community response to potential explosive test range sites and the testing has added to our knowledge of the effectiveness of mitigating measures. The first site had 10m to 15m high walls that were intended to ameliorate the airblast. These walls functioned to a limited extent and reduced the airblast levels by 2dB to 5dB. The airblast was affected somewhat by topography. Noise levels at the nearest residences exceeded 130dB for charges larger than 1kg, whereas the vibration levels were very small. Formal complaints were received where the airblast level exceeded 128dB as per conventional expectations. Pedestrians and pets in the suburbs were startled by the blasts, emphasizing that the community response is much more sensitive to noise and airblast than vibration levels. The maximum airblast levels were too high for this site to be used on a regular basis. At another site, the airblast levels were significantly increased downwind by up to 10dB due to a moderate wind. A third site, at a quarry, produced unconfined airblast levels beneath the derived limits, but are much higher than the normal quarry blasting. By involving community forums there were no complaints, possibly due to desensitization by the normal blasting activities. The study has highlighted new areas for research in understanding the effect of noise, air blast and vibration on the low cost and informal housing typical in South Africa

The potential for the wide-spread commercialization of superconductivity, the disappearance of all resistance to a direct current (D.C.) electric flow, began in 1986-87 with the development by Bednorz and Muller at IBM&apos;s Zurich Laboratory of an yttrium -barium -copper oxide conductor which attained zero resistance at 90t:. Although the status of superconductivity is still pre-bench scale, it is useful to forecast its probable effects on the copper industry. I t should not be forgotten that at their inception, the impacts of transistors, semi-conductors, thin films and fiber optics on the electric/electronics sector of this industry, were largely underestimated. Superconductors are not metals, but a class of ceramics. They represent an efficiency increase of one or more orders of magnitude. If their development is to be a boon to the copper industry, rather than a reduction of metal demand through miniaturization or material substitution, vastly expanded copper containing electrical uses must be in prospect. In this paper the projected uses of high temperature superconductivity are examined, followed by the remaining problems to be overcome. Assuming success, a time horizon for maturation is estimated. The penalties for the non-recognition of new markets and material substitution are shown on the basis of past forecasts. Finally, the application of successful superconductivity to the copper industry over the forecast period is estimated.

A financial-economic model incorporating physical, market, and policy variables is developed for mining investment in Bolivia. Additional risk criteria emanating from political instability. new mining legislation, recent environmental regulations, and a new minerals taxation system are accounted for and are integrated into the investment decision model. Results of the model indicate that geologic and market variables have the dominant effect on the investment-worth function. Among policy variables, exchange rate and taxation policies have the most significant influence. Depreciation allowance for infrastructure development has negligible weight in the investment-worth function. The business structure of the firm considering investing in the Bolivian Polymetallic Project is found to be an instrumental factor in the investment-worth outcome. Specifically, undiversified mining companies whose operations exclude zinc production as the primary source of revenue would benefit most from adoption of this project.

"Coal, as the main energy in ferrous metallurgy, is consumed on a large scale and great amount of CO2 is emitted likewise. In this paper, a model, based on carbon balance, was developed for CO2 emission analysis, with data obtained from a typical integrated steelworks in China. The result shows that, CO2 emissions increase almost constantly with the growth of steel production. However, coals of different classes and product variety in the steelworks exerted an influence on CO2 emissions. Furthermore, three scenarios, including natural gas instead of coal for power generation, EAF process partly replacing integrated steelmaking, and feasible techniques applied to achieve lowest process energy consumption (FLPEC), were assumed to seek possible ways of carbon emission reduction. The result proves that the second scenario is most effective. If 40% of the steel product could be from EAF process, CO2 emissions would be reduced by 45.07%.IntroductionGlobal warming has become a global environmental problem, which is generally caused by excessive emission of greenhouse gases, such as CO2, generated from human activities and industrial processes. It is estimated that about 7% of global CO2 emissions was from iron and steel industry. Further, if the ore and coal’s mining and transportation are included, the CO2 emissions would reach 10%[1]. In general, the relationship between energy saving and CO2 emission reduction is positive correlation. However, in iron and steel enterprises, due to different types of energy resources like coal, heavy oil, natural gas, the consumption of which will generate different amount of CO2, are used, different energy consumption structure in iron and steel enterprises will lead to difference of CO2 emissions.In order to assess the CO2 emission reduction potential of China’s steel industry, Ke Wang etc.[2] developed a model using LEAP software to generate 3 different CO2 emission scenarios for the industry from 2000 to 2030. DAVE BARTLEY and Edwin F. Gray, miners, late of Shasta County, California, young, healthy, and "dead broke," arrived at Ely, Nevada, one evening in the summer of 1900. Before rustling jobs and going to work, they decided to look around the camp, and in pursuance of this plan they visited a number of claims owned by D. C. McDonald, Justice of the Peace and pioneer of the district. Among the claims he showed them were the Ruth (named after his daughter) and the Kearsarge. Both were regarded as possible gold or silver properties. For no very definite reason the two miners changed their plan and took a lease and option to buy the two claims for $3500. After the transaction was closed and the partners were alone, Gray asked Bartley what he thought of the ground. "If she&apos;s good for anything, it&apos;s copper" was the reply; and, so far as the records disclose, that was the first time that anyone ever thought of Ely or the Robinson mining district, as it was called, as a possible copper area. There were some slight surface indications of copper, but it is probable that the fact that Bartley had just come from a copper district had something to do with his predilection for a metal that was much despised around Ely. In any event, his hunch was good, and he spoke with the wisdom of an oracle. For thirty years prospectors had sought gold and silver around the camp. Several stamp mills and cyanide plants had been put up and a hundred shafts had been sunk, but fate had been indifferent in its rewards to the optimistic owners. Copper ore would have to be hauled by wagon, 150 miles down Steptoe Valley to the Southern Pacific Railroad, and there was scant hope of finding ore that would bear this cost. W. B. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has collected pillar and span data at 34 stone mines in 10 states to develop pillar and roof span design guidelines for underground stone mines. Pillar, floor and roof conditions each contribute significantly to the overall mine stability. The roof may be stable for a century, or it may appear to be stable but fail with little warning. Clearly, an assessment of the mine roof is critical to the safety of these operations. However, up until now, the assessment of the mine roof came primarily from exposures in roof falls or portal areas. This provides only limited information, and a more proactive approach is needed to assess changing mine conditions. A separate effort was undertaken to examine the roof structure with the use of a borescope. Numerous physical and geologic roof structures were observed with a stratascope/borehole video camera. The objective of this work was to develop a technique of assigning numerical values to features seen within the mine roof and apply those values to formulate a roof stability evaluation. Such features as changes in color, grain size, and general lithologies are readily observed. Minor structures in the rock, fossils and fractures are also readily identified. Each feature may have a variable and site-specific impact on roof quality. A number of mines were visited and a series of holes were borescoped in each mine. The features identified in the roof were classified and potential for roof damage related to each feature was assessed. A process is presented that relates the structures and their locations to provide a numerical value, or roof quality index that can be used to assess roof stability.

Edward Payson Mathewson EDWARD PAYSON MATHEWSON, President of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgi-cal Engineers, was born in Montreal, Canada, Oct. 16, 1864, of Scotch-Irish ancestors. After preparation in private and public schools, he graduated from McGill University with the degree of Bachelor of Applied Science, in 1885, having specialized in mining engineer-ing and metallurgy. He spent the succeeding summer as a surveyor with the Canadian Geological Survey, being employed in the lake region of Ontario. The following spring he left Canada for Colorado, where he immediately obtained a position as assayer with the Pueblo Smelting & Refining Co. Within three years he became superintendent of the plant, and his success in this position brought him to the attention of the Guggenheim family, whose employ he entered in 1897. He was first in charge of their Pueblo plant, but was soon transferred to their refinery at Perth Amboy, N. J. During the succeeding five years he was in charge of important smelting operations conducted by the firm in Mexico and South America. In June, 1902, Mr. Mathewson accepted a position at the Washoe reduction works at Anaconda, soon thereafter becoming manager of the property. It is unnecessary to recount the improvements and enlarge-ments instituted at that plant under his management, until it became the Mecca of all metallurgists visiting the United States. The esteem in which Mr. Mathew-son was held, not only by the men directly under him, but by all his fellow citizens, was expressed in a send-off such as probably no other plant manager has ever received, when he left Anaconda in October, 1916, to accept the general managership of the British America Nickel Corporation, at Nickelton, Ont., Canada. Soon thereafter Mr. Mathewson accepted an appoint-ment as director of the American Smelting and Refining Co., acting as consulting metallurgist for the company and its subsidiaries. In November, 1919, he resigned this position and opened an office in New York City as a consulting metallurgist.
