While not well established, there is evidence that the mining industry is encumbered by several work-related fatigue risk factors. Compared to other industries, mine workers are more likely to report inadequate sleep and work longer hours per day. Given these observations, there is a critical need to identify effective ways to intervene, manage, and mitigate mine worker fatigue and sleepiness when present. One barrier to this is confusion around the similarities and differences between fatigue and sleepiness, which can result in these terms being treated as interchangeable regardless of context and make it difficult to assess and mitigate safety risk.

Greece is the only EU country with extensive nickel laterite deposits. Since the 1960s, the Greek laterites are treated for ferronickel production via a pyrometallurgical route, which involves pre-reduction of the ore in rotary kilns and reduction smelting in electric arc furnaces. Due to the rising cost of energy and the decreasing grade of mined laterites, the pyrometallurgical treatment is economically marginal. For this reason, alternative treatment processes are currently under investigation. Potential applicability of hydrometallurgical treatment, using either H2SO4 or HCl, under atmospheric pressure conditions, for Ni and Co extraction from two low grade laterite ores, was examined in the present work. The two samples were selected to represent the different mineralogical composition of the saprolitic and limonitic ore deposits of the Greek laterites. The investigated parameters were temperature (65–90 °C), acid concentration (1–4 N) and solid to liquid ratio (10–30% w/v). The results indicated that HCl was more efficient than H2SO4 for the treatment of the saprolitic ore; Ni and Co extractions were very high for both elements, up to 98% and 96% respectively, while H2SO4 could leach efficiently Ni, up to 100%, but extracted only 34% of Co. Hydrochloric acid was also more efficient for the treatment of the limonitic ore, with Ni and Co extractions up to 98.3% and 87.6% respectively. With H2SO4 the maximum extractions were 71.3% for Ni and 52.1% for Co.

A computer program is presented to calculate the shape factors and volumes of cells from a potentiometric model, using coordinates of the inter-sections of the stream lines and equal potentials and a few additional coordinates. Shape factors are used in flow computations when the geometry is complicated. The program also includes computer instructions to divide the channels into cells of equal volume and to obtain the shape factor for each of these equal volume cells. An illustrated example using the potentiometric model for the waterflood of a seven-spot well-spacing pattern is presented. The information contained in the report is of value not only to those allied to the subject but also to others, because many of the techniques can be conveniently used in formulating other computer programs.

This information circular describes the application of modern methods and equipment in sinking a vertical, 916-foot-deep by 16-foot-diameter, concrete-lined access shaft for the Harold D. Roberts tunnel near Montezuma, Colo. Although the access shaft was merely a construction facility to expedite completion of a 23-mile water-diversion tunnel, a circular shaft of this type would be equally adaptable for mine development or other purposes. Comparable sinking methods and equipment could be used for similar shafts within a wide range of sizes and depths. SUMMARY In addition to excavation and support of the basic access shaft to tunnel grade, the overall sinking project involved initial preparation of a surface site and plant, subsequent construction of a tunnel-level station and loading pocket at the shaft bottom, and ultimate conversion of the basic shaft into a hoisting and access facility for tunnel operations. The sinking period for the basic shaft approximated one year. Actual tunnel operations through the converted shaft began on April 3, 1958, approximately 19 months after the project was initiated.

IN mining, quarrying, and construction, drilling and blasting have an important influence on the operations that follow. If the fragmentation of material being disrupted is inadequate, loading and transportation equipment will not operate at or near full capacity. Any operator faced with this difficulty should not be satisfied until he is convinced by a careful study of his methods of drilling and blasting that no improvement can be made. Rock in a certain quarry in Ohio seemed to defy any grade of explosive or means of detonation that the explosives industry had to offer. The average result of a blast was that a great part of the burden would be pushed out from the face in a number of large sections that would jokingly be referred to as "boxcars." These were no credit to the explosives man and a costly problem for the quarry company. Such blocks retard shovel operation as they have to be uncovered and subjected to secondary drilling and blasting which, if extensive, is an expensive operation. It was an attempt to improve the fragmentation obtained in primary blasts that led to the development of milli-second-delay electric blasting caps. The reasoning that prompted the trial was that even with wide spacing of the drill holes it seemed that the burden was separated too quickly from the face by the cutting action of the explosives from hole to hole. The objective of this program is to identify and evaluate superior, lightweight substitutes for selected coal mine roof support concepts such as crossbars, posts, and crib blocks. Engineering analysis and concept design identified, through tradeoff studies, that some materials are promising, from a technical standpoint, as support substitutes: E-glass reinforced polyester resin, high strength low alloy steel, aluminum, and very high early strength (VHE) cement. An economic analysis indicates that none of the lightweight substitutes are economically competitive with wood on an initial cost basis; however, in terms of life cycle costs based on current dollars, the high strength low alloy steel appears competitive for crossbars, and the VHE cement and E-glass/resin appear competitive for posts.

Since human daily demands for fresh water have been increased significantly, the supply of fresh water for the mining industry, especially froth flotation, should be considerably reduced. In addition, stricter environmental standards have been implemented in many countries to reduce the risks due to the disposal of wastewater, many flotation operators have to seek more efficient ways to utilize the limited fresh water sources. Recycling water with high concentrations of impurities is a normal strategy for most of the mineral processing plants; however, water quality should be carefully considered to guarantee a smooth flotation process. Recently, the application of seawater in flotation has attracted much attention due to its availability and abundance rather than fresh water. However, the influencing mechanisms due to the application of seawater in flotation have not been fully understood especially the reactions between mineral particles and bubbles in the presence of high concentrations of cations and anions. This would impede the application of alternatives to fresh water in the flotation. Therefore, this paper reviews the current water sources and the technologies for water recycling in the flotation process. Specifically, the life cycle of water in flotation was proposed. In addition, the strategies including high pulp density flotation as well as the most promising alternatives to fresh water have been discussed in details, with the related mechanisms being demonstrated.

U.S. molybdenum production increased fivefold from 18.2 million pounds in 1946 to 90.5 million pounds in 1966, and constituted 87.3 percent of the total free world supply in the 1946-66 period. Mining development in other free world countries in the next few years may reduce the magnitude of the U.S. position, although similar development planned for the United States may counteract some of the relative gains by those countries. In 1966 two-thirds of the reported molybdenum consumption in the United States by end uses was as an alloying element in steel. Molybdenum also has important use as an alloying element in iron and high-temperature alloys. Consumption of molybdenum metal for making fabricated parts has increased in the past few years, especially in the space and nuclear industries. Molybdenum compounds are used mainly for making pigment, catalysts, and lubricants. Based on producer reports of shipments of primary products to domestic customers, U.S. consumption of molybdenum increased from 16.5 million pounds of molybdenum in 1946 to 65.6 million pounds in 1966. U.S. molybdenum reserves are now estimated to be 5.9 billion pounds of recoverable molybdenum, an increase of 2.1 billion pounds above previous estimates. Molybdenum ores account for 71.4 percent of the reserves, copper ores for 22.3 percent and copper-molybdenum, tungsten, and uranium ores for 6.3 percent. Several methods for predicting future demand are illustrated and estimates of demand using these methods were made for 1975. Based on present capacities and announced company plans for future developments, estimates of annual production were made for 1967 through 1975 for the United States, Canada. Chile, Peru, and the free world. These data indicate that molybdenum production in 1975 for the free world is expected to be 246 million pounds with the United States producing 68.2 percent and Canada, Chile, and Peru 30.3 percent.

Zinc concentrates received in La Oroya zinc refinery are marmatitic in nature, contain about 11% iron and traces of other metal values, Figure 1 shows the zinc circuit. The calcine from the roasted concentrates is leached in spent zinc electrolyte. Major part of the impurities is iron which has been oxidized to its trivalent form, This is the origin of the zinc leach residue for which the ZILERET process was developed and so named. The impure liquor from the leach is sent for purification and thence to electrolysis- zinc deposits on aluminum cathodes from which: it is stripped, melted and cast into slabs Typical assays of zinc calcine and leach residue are given in Table 1. Metal values contained in the leach residue, without counting any value of iron, amount to roughly $130 per short ton.

"One of the key drivers of geometallurgy is to define the ore characteristics and their variability to build a geometallurgical model. The inclusion of waste rock properties and their variability is just as important, given that the generation of acid rock drainage (ARD) poses one of the most significant environmental challenges facing the mining industry. Formed through the oxidation of sulfide minerals in the presence of oxygen and water, ARD generation is exacerbated through the regeneration of lixiviates by naturally occurring iron- and sulfur-oxidising micro-organisms. In order to manage the potential risk of ARD pollution, timely, accurate, reliable and robust characterisation and prediction of the ARD potential of waste material is critical from an early stage in the mining process.This study demonstrates the use of the biokinetic-accelerated weathering test developed at the University of Cape Town to characterise the ARD potentials of gold waste rock samples under microbial conditions. These tests are performed in conjunction with standard characterisation tests to provide an indication of the potential for ARD generation under both chemical and biological conditions. Results provided information regarding the relative rates of acid neutralisation and acid generation, with the contribution of specific minerals to the observed behaviour considered through use of a detailed mineralogical assessment. "Measurement of natural radioactivity has been used in both a qualitative and a quantitative way in mineral exploration, particularly in the search for uranium. In the last ?ve years, the Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut (KVI) and British Geological Survey (BGS) have designed, built and tested a new detector system that greatly improves quantitative applications in mineral exploration, especially on the sea?oor and in the nearshore zone. The new system is an enhancement of an earlier BGS design. The major improvements comprise the use of a highly sensitive ?-ray detector, together with new data processing, from which concentrations of natural radio nuclides may be deduced in real time. After laboratory analysis of samples, these concentrations can be converted into mineral percentages. Once the mineralogy of an area has been characterized, this conversion can also be done in real time.Thus far the system has mainly been used to map heavy-mineral concentrations in coastal subtidal and intertidal sediments. For such work the multi-sensor detector probe is towed on the sea?oor and various parameters are recorded continuously. The probe contains, in addition to the gamma-ray detector, a water-pressure sensor (giving water depth) and an acoustic device to measure bottom roughness. The system, when used together with high-precision positioning systems such as D-GPS,enables the production of detailed maps of bathymetry, bottom roughness, and sea?oor radioactivity or mineral distribution. These maps allow mineral concentrations to be readily correlated with sea-bed topography and sediment type. In the same way, ?-ray detectors could be used advantageously during dredging operations to provide on-line assessment of the mineral content of the dredged sediment as well as to guide the direction of dredging. Additionally, the same technique could be used to monitor the subsequent fate of a dredge spoil after dumping on the sea?oor.Natural radioactivity arising from potassium and the thorium and uranium decay series has potential use for the fast and reliable assessment of siliciclastic and phosphatic impurities in limestones. Detection of such impurities may preclude the use of the limestone for chemical or cement production.Apart from its use in exploration, the technique has signi?cant potential in mineral processing, particularly of heavy minerals. It can be applied as on-line quality control in dry and wet separation processes and for process control, by using decisions based on the results to control valves and other instrumentation. In addition, it can also be used in environmental monitoring of waste arising from mineral extraction and processing. Hawai'i is surrounded by a series of potentially valuable marine mineral deposits. These include manganese nodules between Hawai'i and Mexico, cobalt-rich manganese crusts and phosphorites in the Exclusive Economic Zone around the Hawaiian Island Archipelago, Johnston Island and the neigh- boring island states and sand and gravel deposits off the main Hawaiian Islands largely in State waters. Hawai'i has an economy that is very narrowly based on the tourist industry. In an effort to avoid the difficulties coming from such a vulnerable economy, significant efforts have been made toward economic diversification. The State has set up a range of programs looking to find new industries. New ocean industries figure prominently among these efforts as Hawai'i is surrounded by ocean. Naturally, among new ocean industries the potential for new marine mineral industries is significant given that Honolulu is the only full service port in the Central Pacific and Hawai'i is in the middle of the mineral belt. The port of Honolulu is now being actively used by mineral exploration vessels of several countries and with the current number of ship visits varying from 10-15 per year, this puts several million dollars a year into the State economy. It helps to fulfill the State's goal of dynamic growth in the ocean sector of the economy. Nonetheless, a major marine minerals industry, particularly one which would involve processing of minerals in Hawai'i, is controversial in a State whose main source of revenue is tourist expenditures based on the image of a pristine environment. In addition to the perceived threat to the hotel and fishing industry, is the whole highly emotional debate concerning preservation and development. To complicate the issue further, the major interest in developing a marine minerals is currently largely from Korea and China rather than from domestic U.S. industry. On the other side of the debate is the fact that the State's economy is hampered by many low paying jobs and a lack of technical jobs. This is further exacerbated by the fact that lower paying jobs are held disproportionately by people of Hawaiian and Pacific Island ancestry. Naturally, this leads over time to a certain amount of resentment. The higher paying technical lobs associated with a minerals processing industry could help to alleviate this problem.

Of the fossil fuels used for power generation coal is by far the most variable and complex in its properties. A thorough review of the characteristics of the coal to be fired is essential before boiler design can begin. Major parameters such as heating value, moisture content and ash properties will determine not only the boiler size and configuration, but also the performance of the unit with respect to the thermal efficiency, particulate and gaseous emissions, and unit availability and reliability. An example of a review completed on a large low-rank coal deposit for a power plant will be described.

We optimize continuous quench process parameters to produce functionally graded aluminum alloy extrudates. To perform this task, an optimization problem is defined and solved using a standard nonlinear programming algorithm. Ingredients of this algorithm include 1) the process parameters to be optimized, 2) a cost function: the weighted average of the precipitate number density distribution, 3) constraint functions to limit the temperature gradient (and hence distortion and residual stress) and exit temperature, and 4) their sensitivities with respect to the process parameters. The cost and constraint functions are dependent on the temperature and precipitate size which are obtained by balancing energy to determine the temperature distribution and by using a reaction-rate theory to determine the precipitate particle sizes and their distributions. Both the temperature and the precipitate models are solved via the discontinuous Galerkin finite element method. The energy balance incorporates nonlinear boundary conditions and material properties. The temperature field is then used in the reaction rate model which has as many as 105 degrees of- freedom per finite element node. After computing the temperature and precipitate size distributions we must compute their sensitivities. This seemingly intractable computational task is resolved thanks to the discontinuous Galerkin finite element formulation and the direct differentiation sensitivity method. A three-dimension example is provided to demonstrate the algorithm.

The pervasiveness of poor sampling practices in and around mineral processing plants could seem intriguing in view of the various documented evidences both for causes and consequences. To this extent, this paper revisits the well-documented but lesser-known fact that failure to care sufficiently about how samples are selected and managed is the mother source of almost all sampling biases. The authors believe that the potentially huge leverage between causes and consequences as well as the diversity of people involved in sampling call for a globally integrated solution rather than for a point solution. Such a globally integrated solution has already been put forward by the AMIRA P754 Metal accounting – code of practice and guidelines (AMIRA, 2007) that inherently requires accuracy to be targeted, measured, reported and managed. Furthermore, always in order to avoid a point solution, several layers of protection against biases must be put in place with each one involving a different ownership whenever possible. This is exactly the role intended by the supervisory bias detection method described in this publication. It is based on the continuous monitoring of the expected value of reduced residuals obtained from statistical data reconciliation conducted in a metal accounting context. This supervisory bias detection method is developed in full details after which Monte Carlo simulations are done on a mineral processing plant example for showing how it can be successfully applied for detecting hidden biases.CITATION:Lachance, L, Leroux, D, Gariépy, S and Flament, F, 2014. In order to obtain the solubility of carbon in vanadium-bearing hot metal, graphite powder is used for the carburization experiments. The other kinds of carburizers, namely low nitrogen carburizer, anthracite and coke are used for carburization of vanadium-bearing hot metal weighing 500 g at temperature of 1450, 1500 and 1550 °C respectively. Carbon increments of low nitrogen carburizer, anthracite and coke fall in descending order. It was found by comprehensive analysis that anthracite is the most cost-effective carburizer among three carburizers. Magnitude of apparent rate constant of carburization reactions is 10−4s−1. It is found that the carburization rate increase with temperature.

A tectonically disturbed sequence of Mississippian age evaporites expressing a 5 milligal negative gravity anomaly near Sussex in southeastern New Brunswick, Canada, was investigated by a program of drilling, geologic and geophysical work over the past 27 months. Seventeen of twenty-one drill holes have penetrated 10 to 140 feet of potash mineralization in a salt sequence underlying 2 000 to 3 000 feet of arenaceous, conformable red beds, also of Mississippian age. Bromine and borate studies, lithological characteristics and geophysics, have facilitated improved understanding of the salt structure. The salt sequence has been affected by f1owage which has resulted in both major and minor folding. In the more disturbed areas, the potash interval was extensively subterraneally eroded at the upper anhydrite-salt contact.

Los operadores de las chancadoras y productoras de piezas fundidas de las fundiciones buscan el desarrollo de nuevos materiales y diseños para los mantos y revestimientos de cóncavo y así mejorar el desempeño de las chancadoras. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe la innovación en el diseño de dichos mantos -en tanto el desgaste de la parte superior de este es menor debido a las condiciones de impacto. Por ello, el diseño del manto se realiza en tres niveles: superior, media e inferior, de forma que la parte superior dura más que la parte media y la parte inferior es menos duradera, dada las condiciones de abrasión. Asímismo, le otorga al operador mayor libertad para reemplazar las piezas por separado de acuerdo con el desgaste que representen.
