Hydraulic mining has been practiced in the United States since 1852 and many mineral commodities, such as gilsonite, phosphates, lead-zinc, silver ores and St. Peter Sandstone can be mined in this manner. In 1958, the U. S. Bureau of Mines initiated research into the mining of coal using these techniques.1-4 These early investigations were conducted in the 5000 psi pressure range. The large nozzle diameters used in this pressure range produced extremely high flow rates which created visibility problems at the coal face, and required removal of large amounts of water from the mining area. Besides, the production rates were not much better than with mechanical methods. This indicated that with higher pressures the water quantities might be reduced using the same or higher horsepowers but enhanced breakage. For this reason intensive investigation in material removal using fine water jets at extremely high pressures (50,000 psi to 100,000 psi) has been undertaken. This was not the entire reason for this contract from the Bureau of Mines, however. The contract objective is outlined later. IIT Research Institute has done pioneering work in high pressure jet development in the United States.5-8 Similar schemes have been investigated abroad. 9-13 Hydraulic mining of coal at relatively low pressures is successfully being done in the Soviet Union, Japan, Canada, and most recently, in Germany.

Processing of various ores and materials in a reducing atmosphere has been done for many years. However, the typical device currently used is a large, often high maintenance, expensive piece of equipment; the rotary kiln. While it is a very reliable and a proven technology, the rotary kiln also has its limitations. It is limited by its ability to process very fine materials without creating a huge dust loss to the air pollution control equipment. This leads us towards the development of an alternate technology; the Gas Suspension System. Gas suspension preheating of various materials has been in commercial use since the early 1950's, but recently has been expanded to include Gas Suspension Reduction. Laboratory experience has proven successful on several materials; Nickel Laterite Fines, Iron Ore Fines, Fluorspar, and Clays. The gas suspension reduction system has many advantages over the conventional reduction kiln when processing fines. They are; lower cost, more fuel efficient, able to process fines, less real estate required, etc.

This study conducts a comparative analysis of construction efficiency. In the first part we compared electronic and non-electric initiation systems, focusing on tunnel contour holes. Field blasting operations were executed across a variety of delays to identify the optimal delay time. This delay for the in-situ rock mass was determined through regression analysis of blasting vibration in contour holes and for overbreak/underbreak. The blasting results with the electronic initiation system using the obtained optimal delay, applied to contour holes, were compared with the results of the non-electric initiation system. The overbreak and underbreak decreased by an average of 2.7 cm and 5.8 cm respectively, by using the electronic initiation system. Moreover, the vibration reduction rate in contour holes region was reduced by 11.9% based on the blasting vibration estimation equation proposed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT). Underground construction projects have become increasing popular as cities grow in both size and density. This growth severely limits the amount of useable space for new project on the surface, resulting in the decision to build them underground. This new policy however brings into focus the challenge of managing and reducing blasting related vibration due to the proximity of these projects to sensitive structures, utilities and foundations often present in urban environments. For this purpose, we have been required to manage the vibration by reducing the quantity of explosives used per round. Inspired by surface blasting techniques, we applied a decking mode to address and work around this challenge. We present in this paper the first attempt to blast a tunnel face using a decking method and reduce the charging per hole from 6 kg to 3 kg per hole and keep the same advance rate for this tunnel. The results are presented in the third part of this paper. In the second part we present the results of the decking mode in shaft. The use of the electronic initiation system in tunnel construction provides the users an effective tool to improve the overbreak/underbreak and keep the vibration at a low level with a large gain on the overall project schedule and budget. This what we want to demonstrate in this paper.

Precise thermal properties of molten materials are essentially required for analyzing the metal production process. These properties are also important as a clue to consider the dynamic structure of liquid materials. However, it is difficult to obtain the precise thermal diffusivity values of molten oxides at high temperature because of the experimental uncertainties arising from the bubble formation or the severe separation of radiative and conductive heat components. Recently a novel laser flash method has also developed for measuring thermal diffusivity of molten oxides at high temperature. In this new technique, the sample is melted in a metal crucible and heated to the desired temperature. A single laser pulse is flashed on the bottom of the metal crucible and the infrared ray irradiated from the same bottom surface is measured for obtaining the temperature decay, from which the thermal diffusivity of the liquid sample can be estimated. The usefulness and validity of this new laser flash technique have been confirmed by obtaining the thermal diffusivity values of silicate melts in the wide temperature range between 773 and 1673 K.

The main Tintic mining district in central Utah has produced approximately 13,500,000 tons of ore, containing silver, lead, gold, copper, zinc, and other metals, valued at more than $315,000,000. More than 90 per cent of this ore has come from large, irregular ore bodies that have replaced folded and faulted limestone and dolomite strata. Of lesser importance are replacement veins that chiefly cut contact-pyrometasomatized carbonate rocks and fissure veins that cut altered intrμsive bodies and volcanic rocks. The district is in the west-central part of the East Tintic Mountains, a north-trending fault-block range near the eastern margin of the Great Basin. The consolidated sedimentary rocks exposed at the surface and in mine workings are miogeosynclinal deposits more than 10,000 feet thick that range in age from late Precambrian to Late Mississippian. They are folded and strongly faulted and are partly overlain by volcanic tuffs and agglomerates and by extensive flows of porphyritic and vitrophyric quartz latite, latite, and trachyandesite of Eocene age. All of these rocks are locally concealed beneath thick alluvial deposits of Pliocene and Quaternary age. The Eocene and older rocks are cut by dikes, sills, and small stocks of porphyritic quartz monzonite, monzonite, and latite, which are genetically related to the ore deposits. The district is inactive except for the production of halloysite clay and for minor leasing activity and exploration ventures. Several exploration targets remain untested.

Controlling long overland conveyors with multiple drive stations is a complex problem. The methods for controlling these belts in a steady state are well-covered in existing literature, but a discussion of starting and stopping strategies is absent. This paper outlines different control strategies for starting, stopping and running conveyors with multiple drive stations. To illustrate the benefits of applying the methods described in this paper, the authors show how their adoption corrected many of the control system problems at Essroc Cement’s overland conveyor, which features three drive stations separated from each other by long lengths of continuous conveyor belt.

"Nickel and cobalt are the main value metals in nickel laterite ore. Cyanex 272 is an extractant used to separate nickel from cobalt present in leach solutions. Previous studies demonstrated the extraction of cobalt, magnesium and manganese at pH 5 using Cyanex 272 as extractant, while nickel remained in aqueous solution. However, it is difficult to separate cobalt from a solution containing magnesium and manganese. One possibility to change the metals’ behavior during the solvent extraction process is to change the mixture of extractants used. In order to study the solvent extraction of cobalt from a solution containing manganese, magnesium and nickel, a mixture of two extractants was investigated. Cyanex 272 (CY) and Versatic 10 (VC) were selected as extractants in the organic phase. The extractant concentrations used were: 20% CY; 15% CY, 5% VC; 10% CY, 10% VC; 5% CY, 15% VC; and 20% VC. In all cases, kerosene was used as a diluent, at 80 vol%. The synthetic leach solution used in this study was prepared according to the composition of a typical nickel laterite leach solution. The pH value of the solution used was 5, and the aqueous/organic ratio used in solvent extraction testwork was 1/1. The study has shown that the composition of the organic extractant mixture did not increase cobalt separation.INTRODUCTION Sulfide and laterite deposits are the main sources of nickel. However, production from nickel sulfide ores has been decreasing over the years, relatively speaking, increasing the focus on the exploitation of laterite nickel ores (McDonald & Whittington, 2008). Laterite ore deposits are found in tropical and subtropical regions. A characteristic of laterite ores is the presence of a complex and heterogeneous mixture of metals (Crundwell, Moats, Ramachandran, Robinson, & Davenport, 2011; Georgiou & Papangelakis, 1998; Gupta, 2003; Kesler & Simon, 2015; Moskalyk & Alfantazi, 2002; Oliveira, 1990). Nickel concentrations in laterite ores are typically 1–2% (Dalvi, Bacon, & Osborne, 2004)."

Chief among the varied problems facing the mine-manager is that of vein-structure and origin, which is highly important as a guide to successful discovery and development. If metalliferous deposits can be traced to the intrusion of waters along definite lines, then is there something tangible for him to study. But when he is told by a geologist that metalliferous deposits are due to some other cause, like magmatic differentiation, while not perhaps discouraged, he is impressed with a vague sense of new worlds to be conquered. In 1897, while manager of the War Eagle mine at Rossland, B. C., where, previously, the ore-bodies had not been supposed to occur as veins, I suggested to visiting members of the Canadian Geological Survey that, perhaps, the structure of the pyrrhotite-bodies of that mine, which had been proved to occur along well-defined fractures, might throw some light on the similar deposits of Sudbury, then held to be basic aggregations from the original magma. Later investigation has at least provoked discussion of this last deduction, questioning its correctness and suggesting that, perhaps, the deposits are actual veins. The following extract from a paper by J. E. Spurr' is quoted, because it sets forth Mr. Spurr's theory of the quartz-occurrences of the Silver Peak mines, which will be discussed in this article. It also graphically describes the attendant geological features. "The Drinkwater group of mines, which is the most important part of the Blair gold properties, and which has produced practically all of the million dollars' worth of ore, as above stated, may be taken as typical of the gold-veins which, though widespread and numerons, show a wonderful similarity of character. The chemical composition of the asbestos tailings from different mines in the Eastern Townships of Quebec are fairly uniform in composition. The serpentine minerals antigorite and chrysotile form about 85 to 90 per cent of the total. Iron oxides add another 7 to 10 per cent; magnetite represents about 70 per cent of the oxides. Chromite is present in amounts of about 0.5 per cent. The average contents of elemental magnesium, iron and nickel are 23, 6 and 0.25 per cent respectively.

The annual meeting of the Colorado Section was held on the evening of Jan. 24, at the University Club, Denver, Colo.; SO members and guests were in attendance and the meeting was considered one of the most interesting ever held by the local section. After the usual dinner, the officers whose names are given above were elected for the ensuing year. Dr. David T. Day and Dr. G. H. Clevenger, of the Bureau of . Mines, were present and enlightened us with short talks on oil shales and other work of the Bureau. Mr. J. V. N. Dorr was home from a visit to New York and Washington, and told us something of the war work now going on at our National Capitol. Retiring Chairman Loughridge had been insisting for months that this meeting should be given up chiefly to listening to someone who could give his personal experience in going "over the top" in western France; after a long search he succeeded in finding Sargt. F. C. Strickland, M . M., of the Second Canadian Mounted Rifles, who had very recently been discharged from the hospital with permanent disabilities and has accepted recruiting service rather than a discharge. The success of this plan was evidenced by the close attention accorded the speaker for almost two hours, during which he described conditions, hardships, successes and failures of warfare on the western front. Lying to the east of the Rio Grande, in central New Mexico, is a long N. and S. mountain range, broken into separate ridges at several points. These have received separate names; the mountains at the south end, near El Paso, being known as the Franklin mountains, and then, following successively, to the north, the San Andreas range, Sierra Oscura, Manzano and Sandia mountains. At the eastern base of the Sierra Oscura there are several low ridges, remarkable for their red color. All of these red ridges contain reefs of copper-ore. The eastern flanks of the Sierra Oscura are composed of limestone. Some fossils in the limestone were examined by Prof. J. P. Smith of Stanford University, who says they are Fusulina and indicate an Tipper Carboniferous age. The sandstones and shales containing the copper-reefs directly overlie this limestone (Fig. I), and are very likely of Permian age, like the similar beds in Texas, described by Mr. W. F. Cummins.* Overlying the copper-beds are red sandstones and shales in which very little copper has been found. The cupriferous zone and the red sandstones and shales are everywhere associated, and as one stands on a high point, he will see that these rocks form three main belts or lines of hills. These may be referred to as the northern, middle and southern belts. The northern belt was not visited by me, but is known to contain copper-deposits. The middle belt has a trend of N. of W. and S. of E. The copper-reefs have been traced for a distance of more than 2 miles. The southern belt has a trend of about N. 30' W. and S. 30°

The purpose of this investigation is to provide a basis for the semidirect recycling of hard metals. The present investigation focuses on revealing the fundamental chemical kinetic aspects during cemented carbide leaching in hydrochloric acid media. The kinetic relations of cobalt binder leaching from WC-Co cemented carbide are studied using a central composite face-centered design of experiments with temperature, acid concentration, and hydrogen peroxide as variables.

Recently, there has been much debate as to the relevance of reporting financial results using the conventional accounting systems, which is based on historical costs, during a period of rapid inflation. In the following paragraphs , the symptoms, if not the causes, of inflation, its detrimental effect on the financial soundness of business in general and the financial reporting changes being advocated to overcome perceived weaknesses in the present financial reporting system in accounting for the effects of inflation will be reviewed. Finally, a course of action as a sound approach to the financial reporting problem will be recommended.

"Microscopic studies of peat moss indicate a highly porous material. In view of using this natural product as an adsorbing agent for the treatment of polluted water, studies of its adsorbing power for beef extract and alkyl benzene sulphonate solution were determined. The effects of time of contact, particle size, concentration of adsorbent and concentration of pollutant were studied. In the case of beef extract, there is a COD reduction of around 27 per cent; in the case of the alkyl benzene sulphonate, the percentage reduction varied from 72 to 95 per cent. A water treatment plant based on the adsorbing power of peat moss with simultaneous recuperation of the pollutant is proposed."

Pressure filters were found to be necessary to produce Elura silver/lead and zinc concentrates at sufficiently low moisture contents for bulk cargo shipment by sea to smelters.The difficulty in obtaining low moistures was due to the fine primary grind, 80% passing 45 microns, and resultant fine concentrates, 97% passing 45 microns.The filtration system was designed to filter up to 90,000 tonnes/year silver/lead concentrates and up to 130,000 tonnes/year zinc concentrates.This paper details the preliminary test work to select Larox automatic pressure filters, and the commissioning and operation of these filters to achieve design criteria for both concentrates. The design criteria for both concentrates have been bettered due to the concentrates being coarser than the design sizing.

This is the second in a series of Bureau of Mines reports which de-scribe experiments designed to devise an efficient, economic mechanical fragmentation technique for hard rock. The previous study described the development of the ripper cutting technique to successfully cut hard rock with 3-to 6-in-wide drag cutters. This study was conducted to test the ripper cutting technique at full scale using 9-in-wide drag cutters. The experiments were conducted with a special test device that cut shallow, 6-by 6-ft openings in 9,200-lbf/in2 compressive-strength concrete blocks. The tests showed that ripper cutting can excavate large-scale openings of the type required by the mining industry at a production rate that outperforms the conventional drill-blast technique. Moreover, the system can produce openings of various sizes and shapes, is simple to oper-ate and maintain, and produces very little dust or noise during operation. The system appears to meet all of the criteria for a successful hard-rock mining machine.

"Control of fugitive dust in high latitude open-pit mines is challenging due to unique atmospheric phenomenon resulting in complicated flow regimes, and atmospheric inversion due to lack of adequate solar insolation during prolonged winter seasons. In this study, two idealized (One conical and one trapezoidal) three-dimensional open-pit mine geometries are simulated for differing seasonal conditions using the CRADLE-CFD package. The airflow is modeled using Standard Kappa-Epsilon Turbulence Model solved by RANS equations. The concept of particle tracking is used to predict the flow pattern of dust particles. For various climatic conditions, and two different pit geometries, fugitive dust particles varying in size (PM0.1 to PM10) and concentration are generated at various locations of a mine and dispersed by the airflow pattern inside the open-pit mine. The amount and location of dust particles inside the pit is reported at various time intervals. The development of atmospheric inversion during the winter season significantly affected the amount of dust retention inside the open-pit domain. While during the summer, airborne dust particles were transported outside the open-pit domain in a short time. INTRODUCTIONComputational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of open-pit mines is challenging. In a recent paper, Bhowmick et. al. [1] presented different constraints and challenges in developing a 3-Dimensional CFD model. In order to obtain realistic results from a simulation, however, appropriate values of various inputs are required. Simulation results of a 3D non-hydrostatic model by Shi et al. [2] showed that both the mechanical and thermal forcing are important mechanisms, controlling the development of the atmosphere inside an open-pit. Alvarez et al [3] used a CFD model for predicting dust dispersions in a medium sized limestone quarry, and presented several iso-surfaces of varying dust concentrations using ANSYS CFX. A similar study by Torno et al [4] introduced a more sophisticated parameterization of the dust sources. Flores et al. [5] used an OpenFOAM CFD simulation package to simulate and predict pollutant dispersion in an idealized and an actual open-pit mine in Chile with an intense insolation condition. The model was simulated for three different conditions: (i) air advection (10 m/s) driven mechanical turbulence; (ii) surface heat flux (240 W/m2) driven thermal buoyancy; and (iii) both air advection and surface heat flux driven conditions. The results of the simulations showed that the buoyant currents contribute to the removal of a large percentage of the dust particles. The buoyant currents modify the purely mechanical-turbulence induced flow pattern and reduce the particle residence time, commonly observed in a purely mechanical turbulent flow (non-buoyant case)"
