The comminution at grain size level for the liberation of valuable minerals usually requires the highest size-specific energy. Therefore, the full understanding of the comminution process at this level is essential. Models based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM) could be a helpful tool for this purpose. In those, the mineral microstructure, which has a dominant influence on the fracture behaviour, can be described in great detail. One major concern, however, is the missing representativeness of simulated models. In this study, a method to overcome this limitation is presented. The authors show how a realistic microstructure can be implemented into a particle bed comminution simulation using a two-dimensional Bonded Particle Model (BPM). The improved algorithm based modelling approach is exemplarily compared to an equivalent real experiment. Thereby, the focus is set on the analysis of the interfacial breakage and the capability of the simulation to reproduce the experimental results. The comparison of the results shows that simulations at grain size level allow a more detailed evaluation of the fracturing behaviour. This is of special interest as the aim of comminution in mineral processing is not only the size reduction of coarse particles, but an efficient liberation of the valuable components. Hence, simulations with automatically generated real mineral microstructures will help to further improve the efficiency of ore processing. Overland belt conveyors often use vertically guided counterweight take-ups or horizontally tensioned carriages to maintain belt tension. In the event of belt or wire rope failure, these systems can release significant stored energy, creating high-impact forces that risk structural damage and personnel injury. This paper reviews current safety arresting technologies and presents a calculation methodology for estimating impact velocity, energy absorption requirements, and stroke limitations. Worked examples illustrate the selection process for appropriate arrestor types under different design constraints. The study emphasizes early integration of safety devices to minimize structural loads, avoid costly retrofits, and enhance operational reliability. Implementing robust arrestor systems improves safety and reduces downtime in bulk material handling environments.

World food production is not matching the exploding increase in world-population. Since arable land is limited, ways are being sought to increase yields by turning_ to fertilizer. Phosphate, an essential fertilizer ingredient, is undergoing a period of growth unparalleled in history. The United States is at once the world's largest producer of food and of phosphate rock. Both food and fertilizer output in the United States are being enlarged to meet the demands posed by the threatening world food crisis. New phosphate deposits are being developed in Florida and North Carolina to assure the United States' continued preeminence in this vital resource. Large fertilizer complexes are also being constructed with an eye to both domestic and foreign markets. The growth of the U. S. phosphate industry has been characterized by developing technology in the processing and distribution of phosphate raw materials. The trend from low analysis to high analysis materials accompanied by a change from a large number of small fertilizer plants oriented toward the marketplace to a fewer number of large plants located at the raw material source is illustrative. These changes in technology and distribution have also been important factors in the development of new mining areas in Florida, the Western States and North Carolina.

Wakrah and Wukair Drainage Tunnel, WWDT is 13 km long with a 4.5 m ID sewer water tunnel about 50 to 60 m below ground surface. Integral to the project are several adits with provisions for future connections as well as four work shafts, four intermediate access shafts, ancillary hydraulic structures, and an Odor Control Facility. The shaft depths range from 50 to 60 m. The project is constructed in aggressive ground with aggressive ground water. The construction activities require years of pumping and disposal of the ground water during tunneling operations as well as construction of permanent structures in shafts. Grouting of the corrosive rock mass in corrosive groundwater for the WWDT has been described in detail.

This manual provides instructions for installing, operating, and maintaining a protective canopy on the Galis Mfg. Co. face drill. The instructions are based upon an actual installation made in the mine on face drill model 460-S. The parts list and engineering drawings for the protective canopy are included at the end of the manual. And a discussion of some alternative design concepts is also included. The manual can also be used for retrofitting other face drills with similar protective canopies. Skilled mechanics can determine if the instructions herein would be applicable to the other face drills and can determine any necessary modifications if they are not.

"The method of determining coal pillar strength equations from databases of stable and failed case histories is more than 50 years old and has been applied in different countries by different researchers in a range of mining situations. While common wisdom sensibly limits the use of the resultant pillar strength equations and methods to design scenarios that are consistent with the founding database, there are a number of examples where failures have occurred as a direct result of applying empirical design methods to coal pillar design problems that are inconsistent with the founding database.This paper explores the reasons why empirically derived coal pillar strength equations tend to be problem-specific and should be considered as providing no more than a pillar strength “index.” These include the non-consideration of overburden horizontal stress within the mine stability problem, an inadequate definition of super-critical overburden behaviour as it applies to standing coal pillars, and the non-consideration of overburden displacement and coal pillar strain limits. All of which combine to potentially complicate and confuse the back-analysis of coal pillar strength from failed cases.A modified coal pillar design representation and model are presented based on coal pillars acting to reinforce a horizontally stressed overburden, rather than suspend an otherwise unstable self-loaded overburden or section, the latter having been at the core of historical empirical studies into coal pillar strength and stability.INTRODUCTIONThe inspiration for this paper is founded in three statements from two eminent persons in the field of coal pillar strength research, Jim Galvin and Essie Esterhuizen, as follows:Both Salamon and Munro and [the University of New South Wales] based the derivation of their pillar strength formulae on a criteria that the diameter of a panel of pillars, W, had to at least equal the depth of mining, H. This was thought to result in full tributary loading. It is now known that there are some mining environments included in both the South African and Australian databases in which mining span must exceed depth by a considerable margin in order to achieve full deadweight loading. Hence, it is logical to conclude that these data points may have contributed to pillar strength being overestimated by Salamon and Munro and UNSW (underline added by authors). Normally, this should be of no consequence because it is reflected in the probability of design success associated with any given safety factor (Galvin, 2006)."

The bleaching of edible oils, industrial oils, and some chemicals may be achieved using natural and acid-activated clays. These materials remove impurities and pigments from the oils. In this work, a bentonite clay from Turkey (Somas bentonite) was activated with different concentration of H2SO4 and HCl at 70~90°C and 5~8 hours. Under these conditions several cations were removed from natural bentonite (Al, Mg, and Fe) and DTA-TGA, FT-IR curves of the solids obtained after acid treatment were examined. Treatment time and acid concentration increased the degree of destruction of the bentonite structure which was determined by ICP. Activated samples were tested in order to verify their capacity to bleach soybean oil and compared to standard commercial bleaching clays. The experimental results indicate that treated samples with H2SO4 have the same efficient in bleaching crude soybean oil with the standards and treated sample with HCl is more efficient in bleaching than the commercial products.

The science of soil mechanics is 100 years old, and rock mechanics is about 80 years old. While methods of analysis and design have been developed and have evolved over time, these are relatively young sciences. The rapid increases in computing power and new technologies have enabled more sophisticated modelling and monitoring. However, there are still many aspects of soil and rock mechanics that are not well understood. Geotechnical failures, which have major consequences, still occur. These consequences may include environmental damage, major production holdups and associated loss of revenue, damage to infrastructure, and loss of life. High-consequence events, which are rare, are more difficult to anticipate and to design for, because by their nature they involve extraordinary circumstances or conditions, often geological in nature. The risks are usually mitigated by conservative designs and monitoring. Detailed geotechnical investigations help us to understand the natural variability of soil and rock masses and identify unusual or unexpected conditions. Investigating and researching major geotechnical failures is essential to enable these unusual circumstances to be anticipated. In the past, severe unanticipated events may have been treated as natural events or ‘acts of God’. However, society now has much greater expectations and it is essential to have policies and procedures in place that enable appropriate management of these rare, high-consequence risks. A good example is the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), which was introduced after the catastrophic dam collapse at Vale’s Corrego de Feijao mine in Brumadinho, Brazil. The address will explain the concepts of uncertainty and variability, and how they should be taken into account in geotechnical design. The challenges facing geotechnical engineers, mine owners, and managers will be discussed. referencing a number of real case studies.

In 1846 a bill was pending in Congress to reduce, or eliminate, the tariff on coal; the debate caused the same writer to visit the mines on the north side of the James River and to write a letter about them to the same paper.' Omitting the political arguments, his account follows: "July 13, 1846. "Early in the morning we rose, washed, combed, and ate a first-rate breakfast, and then went to the Tuckahoe, mined by Messrs. Sneed and Dietrock. Coal was first discovered here sixty years ago, and mined by Colonel Thomas Randolph, the proprietor of the land. They were worked by him for his smith-shops. Since which time they have been worked periodically, up to the war of 1812, when they were abandoned; and recommenced in 1837 under the management of Dr. W. T.- Scott. Subsequently a Company was formed called Tuckahoe Coal Mining Company, which purchased the whole track at a cost of $30,000. They commenced the sinking of a shaft and went as far as 412 feet, and then pitched the fat all into the fire by hauling off altogether in despair. In 1843 Major Sneed went to work at it, and succeeded. I may here remark that Major Sneed has been the pioneer in this business on the North side of the River, and has sunk more shafts than any other man who has pursued this vocation in Eastern Virginia. The difficulties and expense in sinking these shafts are sometimes immense. The coal on the outcrop or surface is not always a guide to where it may be found imbedded many hundred feet under earth and rock. "The Tuckahoe Pits are on the Eastern end of the coal field, within twelve hundred yards of the Canal, and about twelve miles from Richmond. They employ fifty hands and raise some three hundred thousand bushels of coal per year. It is highly bituminous and excellent for the manufacture of iron. The Tredegar and Belle Isle Rolling Mills are supplied with it. It must be good and of the right kind', or they would not use it. These pits are the only. ones on this side troubled-with gas-of course ventillation is necessary. There is not as much water in this Pit as I have found generally in many others, although they have extended their operations to a considerable distance under ground. I have observed in examining the coal mines, that, where they are sunk over four or five hundred feet, they are annoyed by gas, and where there is a less depth they are troubled with water. It is evident, therefore, that water, in the region of these coal fields, does not run through the earth to any extent, even five hundred feet deep, and the farther you go below that the greater the increase of gas. "We next visited William Cottrell's Pits, situated one mile and a half north of this. He employs some thirty hands, and raises from 4 to 500 bushels per day. "T. & R. The Vipond mine is a gold property located at Timmins, Ontario, Canada, and operated by the Vipond Consolidated Mines (Ltd.). For the past fiscal year (ended July 31. 1930) ore was mined and milled at the rate of 310 tons per day, and the value of the bullion produced was $896,397.61.

THE different lines leading out from the vocation of a mining engineer are,' perhaps, the most' varied of all the professions. The expedition sent by Charles R. Crane of New York 'as a gift to the Imam Yahia, king of the Yemen, Arabia, was probably unique. Mr. Crane made a visit, in January,1927, to the Imam Yahia at Sanaa, capital of the Yemen. He was received with the utmost cordiality and respect, as his friend- . ship for the ,Arab world is famous; He was 'greatly impressed by the desire of the Imam to develop his country. The Imam stated that he had heard that there were minerals in his country and that he would like to secure engineers to advise him about them and other natural resources.. This seemed such a practical idea, and so greatly appealed to Mr. crane, that he offered to furnish an engineering 'expedition. Naturally the Imam gratefully accepted. This expedition was to study (as far as possible in 'the limited time) the natural resources of the ,Yemen, advise the Imam of what these consisted, and make suggestions regarding the most practical methods for their development. As agriculture is always such a fundamental part of a country's wealth, I first went to Indio, California, to study water-well drilling and the date industry, and eventually arrived at Hodeidah, the principal Yemen seaport, on Oct. 21, 1927.

Nine western states contain significant barite deposits, but most deposits are in Nevada, which has been the principal western producer for more than three decades. Nevada produces about 85% of the total United States production, but about one-half of the barite consumed in the country is imported. Approximately 95% of the barite is used in drilling muds. Sharply decreased oil and gas drilling, starting in early 1982, severely depressed the domestic barite industry. Other problems for western barite include long distances to the areas of major drilling, high railroad-freight rates, and increased barite imports. Bedded deposits, formed by submarine exhalative processes, account for almost all western production, and reserves are large.

The following paper discusses the mining, transportation, and crushing methods, with costs, at the San Andreas plant of the Calaveras Cement Co. It is one of a series, prepared for and published by the U. S. Bureau of Mine describing methods used in cement-rock quarries throughout the country. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total cost. It is recognized that publication of total costs mightin some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a hole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost-tabulations shall ensue.

Since the inception of the oxygen-ion conducting electrolytes like ZrOrCaO·by Kiukkola and Wagner [1], the oxygen concentration cells have been extensively used in laboratories as well as in industries. In metal-production technology, these cells have been used to monitor the oxygen potentials in metallic, slag as well as gas phases and also to control and styr metallurgical processes. The pioneer among the various industrial users of such cells is the copper industry. To-day, high temperature solid electrolyte cells involving oxygen ion conducting electrolytes have become an integral part of copper pyro-refining and continuous casting. In the present paper some of the applications according to the industrial processes are described including the developments that are going on in the European scene."

The energy output of crushed AN/FO, crushed AN/FO mixed with Aluminum (5%, 6.4% and 9.4% A1 by mass) and a commercial emulsion explosive has been measured using a detonation calorimeter. The charges had a diameter of 10 mm and were heavily confined by a 11 mm thick copper shell. In order to achieve stable detonation glass microballoons were used in the explosives so that the density of the AN/FO charges would be around 1.1 g/cc. The charges were detonated in vacuum and the detonation products were analyzed using gas chromatography. It was found that energy values were very close to calculated values obtained by ideal detonation codes.

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements on solutions and isolated powders provide direct evidence for the involvement of Cr(V) species in the reduction of Cr(VI) by NAD(P)H. ESR analysis of an isolated Cr(V)NAD( P)H solid yields 6 11 = 1.9831 and 6.i. = 1.9772, indicating that the unpaired electron occupies the d22 orbital of the Cr(V) ion, with square-pyramidal geometry. Addition of hydrogen peroxide (H2 0 2 ) to the N AD(P)HCr( VI) reaction mixtures suppresses the Cr(V) species and generates hydroxyl (""OH) radicals. The ""OH radicals were detected via ESR spin trapping, employing 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide and a-(4-pyridyl-1- oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone as spin traps. The dependence of Cr(V) and ""OH radical formation on the H20 2 and Cr(VI) concentrations indicates that the Cr(V) species react with H20 2 to generate the ""OH radicals. Similar results were obtained by using various diols (arabinose, cellobiose, FAD, fructose, glyceraldehyde, ribose, and tartaric acid), a-hydroxycarboxylic acids, and glutathione. Investigations with superoxide dismutase showed no significant participation of 02 in the generation of OH radicals. These results thus indicate that the Cr(V) complexes, produced in the reduction of Cr(VI) by cellular reductants, react with H20 2 to generate ""OH radicals, which might be the initiators of the primary events in the Cr(VI) cytotoxicity.In this paper we report an electron spin resonance (ESR)3 spectroscopic detection of Cr(V) species in the reduction of potassium dichromate, henceforth called Cr(VI), by NAD(P)H and other diols. Also reported here is the detection of the hydroxyl (""OH) radical in the reaction between hydrogen peroxide (H2O 2) and a variety of Cr(V) complexes. This work was undertaken because while the reduction of Cr(VI) to lower oxidation states has been suggested as a key step m the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity, mutagenicity, and DNA alteration, the details are not yet clear (1-5).Earlier studies on the mechanism of Cr(VI) reduction in cellular systems include those on the reduction of chromate by microsomes (6-8), rat liver DT-diaphorase (9), and aldehyde oxidase (10). All these studies imply that Cr(VI) can be reduced to Cr(Ill) by cellular constituents. Regarding the mechanism of Cr(Vl) carcinogenicity, Jennette postulated that Cr(V) is the ultimate carcinogenic form of chromium compounds (8). This conclusion has led to many further investigations of the formation of Cr(V) in the reduction of Cr(VI) under biologically relevant conditions (11-33). More recently, however, Kawanishi and co-workers (34) have investigated the mechanism of DNA cleavage induced by Cr(VI) in the presence of H20 2 and have argued that it is not Cr(V) itself that is carcinogenic, but it is the reactive oxygenated species (02, 10 2 , ""OH) (produced by the decomposition of the Crv(02) ¾ - ion) that cause the DNA alteration."

Much has been written about the fact that most transformation efforts disappoint. This paper addresses factors that should be taken into consideration in planning and implementing transformation programs to ensure success.In 2009, St Barbara commenced a transformation program to address issues of chronic poor quarterly operational performance; financial pressure caused by the unreliable operational performance; and an inability to develop business plans with integrity and to reliably deliver on the plans. As a result of a number of years of disappointing operational performance, St BarbaraÆs culture was not conducive to business success.This paper uses lessons learnt during St BarbaraÆs transformation program to highlight key characteristics of change programs that can generate significant sustainable benefits. While there were many benefits from the transformation program, the most significant impacts of St BarbaraÆs program have been transformation of the companyÆs culture and capability of people as business leaders; the establishment of a business systems framework to guide the design and development of systems; and developing support functions, for example centralised procurement and supply chain, business improvement and technical services.CITATION:Campbell-Cowan, G, 2012. Scorodite samples were synthesized, in adding or without crystal seed respectively by using Atmospheric Scorodite Process (ASP), Hydrothermal Scorodite Process (HSP), and Improved Atmospheric Scorodite Process (IASP) individually; and their crystal structure, crystallinity, morphology, particle size, specific surface area, Fe/As mole ratio, as well as the leaching stability were characterized, aimed to reveal the relationships among the synthesis methods, the compositional and structural properties, and the leaching stabilities of scorodite. The results show that synthesis methods have significant effects on the compositional and structural properties of scorodite. Scorodite samples of high crystallinity, small specific surface area, and low Fe/As mole ratio, possess high leaching stability. The order in the leaching stability of scorodite samples synthesized in this study is as follow: ASP<HSP<IASP. Scorodite particles in the sample synthesized by IASP without crystal seed are in large sizes and of pyramidal morphology enclosed mainly by crystal planes of {111}; and the sample possesses the crystallinity of 84.5%, the particle size (D50) of 28.2 m, the BET specific surface area of 3.72 m2/g, and the Fe/As mole ratio of 1.05; after leaching this sample by using acetate buffer solution of pH 4.95 for 10 days, the total arsenic concentration in the leaching solution is merely 1.14 mg/L.
