"In 2012 the International Seabed Authority (ISA) established nine “Areas of Particular Environmental Interest” (APEIs) for consideration as future Marine Protected Areas to help preserve the biodiversity of life on the seabed within the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) between Baja California, Mexico, and the Hawaiian Islands. The CCZ is believed to have a high potential for future seabed mining operations. Areas under active exploration contracts in the CCZ, plus the areas currently reserved by the ISA for exploration by developing nations, comprise about 1.9 million km2 of seabed area. The currently designated APEIs consist of more than 1.4 million km2 of seabed. Each APEI includes a central primary conservation area of 200 X 200 km, surrounded by 100-km buffer areas on all sides. The 100-km buffers are intended as a very conservative spacing between the primary conservation area and potential mining activities in adjacent seabed. The selection of these nine 400 X 400 km APEIs, has been criticized as possibly not including sufficient representative habitat similar enough to the potential mining areas (identified currently as the exploration contract and reserved areas administered by the ISA within the region) to ensure protection of the biodiversity that might be impacted by mining.An area to the east of the existing exploration contracts and reserved areas is known to have substantial mineral deposits; it is very similar to the adjacent exploration contract areas in its geology, environmental setting, polymetallic nodule abundance and nodule metal content. Because it is located in the northeastern extreme of the CCZ, this area is also likely to have relatively high densities of benthic life, compared with benthic communities further westward within the CCZ. Many options for the designation of this APEI are possible, but the area designation must accommodate the boundaries of the Exclusive Economic Zones of Mexico and France.This paper discusses why the selected region in the eastern extreme of the CCZ is a good candidate for designation as a new APEI.Keywords: polymetallic nodules, Marine Protected Areas, Clarion-Clipperton Zone, Areas of Particular Environmental Interest"

"Conventional belt conveyors offer an economical method for transporting materials at inclines approaching 18 degrees. Sandwich belt conveyors may be used to transport materials at high angles, to 90 degrees, while maintaining the most positive features of conventional conveyors, that is, (1) proven conventional conveyor components. (2) high-speed operation, (3) high-single lifts, (4) continuous cleaning of the smooth surf aced belts, and (5) easy, quick repair by hot or cold vulcanizing. The present discussion deals with the evolution and development of sandwich belt conveyors to satisfy the operational requirements of the open-pit mining and materials-handling industries.A look at the limitation s of conventional shallow angle conveyors reveals the conveying angle at which a cover belt is needed. The relationship between conveying angle and hugging pressure by the cover belt is developed mathematically. A study of past and current developments reveals that the Loop Belt and Beltavator are significant advances in the state-of -the- art. The vertical radius of curvature constraints are discussed in detail and the constraint equations are developed. Criteria for future development is established as a basis for evolutionary developments in sandwich belt high-angle conveyors. The use of intermediate drives in sandwich belt high-angle conveyors is investigated.IntroductionIn connection with U.S. Bureau of Mines funded–study relating to continuous haulage from deep open-pit mines, the authors had occasion to study extensively, the use of high-angle conveyors as a means of hauling mine products continuously from the pit while maintaining optimum mine slopes to minimize total excavation. The many possible high-angle conveying methods investigated included skip hoists, bucket ladders, pocket belts, fin belts, cleated belts, sandwich belts, pipe belts, screw conveyors, slurry pipe lines, and others. The sandwich belt high-angle conveyor appeared to be the most operationally-appropriate and economical solution for the mining industry. The present paper presents the theory, historical development, state-of-the-art, and evolutionary developments in sandwich belt high-angle conveyors."

A MARKED peculiarity of most of the smelting-works of the Far West is the looseness with which accounts of the operations are kept. Indeed, probably over half of the works do not keep any detailed accounts at all, the yearly gross statement of profit or loss being considered sufficient for all purposes. The reasons for this must apparently be sought in the as yet unsettled state of all business relations, and in the deplorable fact that only in isolated cases educated metallurgists are in charge of the smelting-works. Continual and regular assays of the ores, by-products, and slags, are almost unknown, so that it is impracticable to ascertain, even approximately, the losses in the smelting processes. Of cases where regular accounts are kept of the quantities of ore smelted, of the composition of charges, and of the fuel consumed, I know only two or three. Under these circumstances it is extremely difficult to collect figures which cover the operations for a considerable length of time, and which are so valuable for the metallurgist, who wishes to get an insight into the economy of smelting operations, as shown by practice. Figures obtained by personal observation, which can of course cover only the brief space of the visit of the travelling metallurgist, must, therefore, be made to replace the more valuable data. The writer has had occasion, during the last and the preceding summer, to visit the larger number of the Western lead-smelting works, and offers, in the following pages, such data relating to the economy of lead-smelting in the blast furnace at various works, as he has been able to obtain. The only object in doing so is to place these figures on record, so that they may be from time to time supplemented with other data, which are now wanting. I. "While various methods are available to estimate a mining project's value, value is only established through a transaction. Comparable methods allow the value estimated for a mining project to be benchmarked against mining project values established in the market. Comparable methods thus are a key tool for ensuring value estimates are congruent with what the market would actually pay. For example, if the value estimated for a mining project using discounted cash flow analysis differs significantly from the value implied using comparable market methods, the valuator may be using metal price or discount rate assumptions that differ significantly from those the market is currently willing to pay for.The paper provides an overview of market comparable valuation approaches, and discusses some of the difficulties and limitations that arise in using these approaches. The types of market values that are typically utilised are discussed, including asset sale prices, share prices (market capitalisations), and values established in corporate mergers and acquisitions. Topics discussed include methods used in estimating a mining project's value based on the market value of the company that holds the asset, and limitations that arise because of unique features of mining projects and of companies that hold them.It is concluded that market comparable and fundamental (e.g. NPV) approaches to project valuation should not be viewed as alternative approaches to estimating project value, but rather can and should be integrated to derive a single value estimate based on both market andfandamental data. A method for integrating these approaches is discussed, and illustrated by example."

Drilling through unconsolidated material I need to drill blastholes through a mix of consolidated and unconsolidated material. This material is hung up in an underground ore pass. The total length of the holes would be approximately 200 feet. We have attempted to drill through the material with conventional ITH drilling, but were unsuccessful. Does anyone have a suggestion? I am more than willing to bring in a contractor to do the job, if they have solid experience with this type of problem.

During recent studies concerning the effects that various surface treatments, surface imperfections, locked-in residual stresses and metallurgical and geometrical notches have upon the mechanical behaviour of metals and, in particular, upon their tension-bending characteristics under impact loads, it became apparent that specially developed methods and samples would be of great assistance in determining the desired data. This paper describes and discusses a number of different types of double-notched tension-bending impact samples which have been considered and examined for this purpose. The types most suitable for exploratory investigations are proposed for application in the study of the _behaviour of metals, their welds, and, in particular, their surfaces, when subjected to various notch-severities, surface imperfections, strain rates, temperatures, and constrained states of stress (i.e. the relations of the three principal stresses). It is expected that the proposed double-notched tension-bending samples and the proposed test methods will also contribute toward further understanding of the cold brittle behaviour and the notch-sensitivities of metals. Neste trabalho foi realizada a caracterização microestrutural de um tubo extrudado de parede grossa da liga AA 6351. Foram utilizadas várias técnicas complementares de caracterização microestrutural, tais como microscopia óptica de luz polarizada, microscopia eletrônica de varredura eletrônica (MEV), espectroscopia de raios X por dispersão de energia (EDS), difração de elétrons retroespalhados (EBSD), medidas de dureza e de condutividade elétrica. Foram analisadas as principais características dos grãos e precipitados presentes. Foi detectada e analisada uma zona periférica de grãos grosseiros nas proximidades das superfícies externa e interna do tubo.

The past decade has seen a tremendous revival of the base metal industry in Africa, coupled with an unprecedented increase in the prices of base metal commodities in the last couple of years. The theme of the 4th Southern African Base Metal Conference, is therefore, ?Africa?s base metals resurgence?. This conference will explore the contributions made by the mining and metallurgical disciplines to the base metals industry in Africa. It will also investigate how the base metals industry in Africa can capture the maximum potential from the increase in base metal prices through research, innovative thinking, new ways of operating and project implementation. The conference will also consider the influence of Europe?s REACH programme on the base metal industry in Southern Africa. The conference will include a technical visit to Rössing Mine (Uranium) and will be followed by technical visits to Ongopolo (copper), Skorpion Mine (zinc) and Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation(zinc and lead). This paper describing the mining practices at the Ray mines at Ray, Arizona, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, method and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. At the present time (1929) all mineral Production of the Ray district comes from the Ray Mines of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. The ore body is being worked from two shafts, designated as No. 1 and No. 2. An undercut block-caving method of mining is used, variations of which are employed to fit different conditions. The present method has been developed by making improvements as experience was gained or when conditions changed. Refinements in practice are continually being made. The Ray mine was the first in the Southwest to use a caving system of mining on a large scale.

This report presents low-temperature tar data from studies by the Bureau of Mines of tars produced in an externally heated (entrained state) pilot-plant-scale retort. Analytical data covering 20 low-temperature tars, derived from the. carbonization of various ranks of foreign and domestic coals, are tabulated. The character of the tar is discussed in relationship to carbonizing conditions and the rank of coal. It is seen that in carbonization techniques that employ entrainment or fluidization of the coal particle, carbonization conditions are secondary to coal rank with respect to tar-oil yields and composition. The influence of distillation conditions on recoverable yields of tar products is presented. The probable yield of commercially important chemical products, based on a ton of pure (moisture- and ash-free) coal, are predicted. INTRODUCTION Low-temperature tars produced by entrainment or fluidized carbonization techniques that employ internally heated reactors represent the most nearly primary tart produced by industrial processes. In brief, such a process involves the application of a heat gradient to the coal particle "boiling" or suspended in a turbulent state in the reactor chamber. Conditions are observed so that the coal particle remains suspended within the reaction zone by a gas stream for a time interval commensurate with maximum tar-oil yield. The heat necessary for the carbonization reaction may be obtained entirely from the hot (preheated) gas stream, or it may be derived partly from the combustion of the volatile products and char by the transport gases, usually air. The volatile material moves out of the carbonizing zone at a rate that approaches the velocity of the transport gas. Carbonizing conditions are ideal when a minimum particle residence time is obtained within the reactor at a given temperature and a maximum yield of condensable volatile matter is released. In industrial practice this objective is a compromise.

A RECONNAISSANCE Of the manganese-and chrome-ore deposits of Cuba was made by the writer, as a representative of the U. S. Geological Survey, in company with Mr. Albert Burch of the Bureau of Mines under instructions of the Secretary of the. Interior, in the Spring of 1918. The object of the study was to obtain authentic information for the use of the United States Government as to the location, character, quantity, and availability of the manganese and chrome-ore deposits in Cuba. Accordingly, the work comprised the examination of such deposits as seemed to be of promise, without regard to stage of development, with a view to determination of the quantity and quality of ore likely to become available for shipment during 1918 and 1919, and of the tonnage of ore in reserve. While it was possible to visit most of the deposits that seemed to be of promise, there was not sufficient time to visit all that were brought to our attention, some of which may have merit. Manganese ore is found in Cuba in Oriente, Santa Clara, and Pinar del Rio Provinces, but in Oriente Province only does it occur in large commercial quantities. There, the deposits are in three areas: one north of Santiago de Cuba, one south of Bayamo and Baire, and one on the Caribbean coast between Torquino Peak and Portillo. In Santa Clara Province, a little ore has been found near the Caribbean coast west of Trinidad; and in Pinar del Rio Province, manganiferous material occurs north of the city of Pinar del Rio and farther west near Mendoza. The manganese ores of Cuba occur, principally, in sedimentary rocks, such as limestone, sandstone, and shale, that are in places metamorphosed, and. in beds that originally may have been water-laid tuff

FROM the engineer's standpoint, labor organizations are of interest in so far as they 'affect efficiency, maximum production and unit cost, and in this respect the earlier labor organizations' which existed in the age of the Guilds were ideal, inasmuch as they stood ' for competency of the apprentice and close cooperation ' between employers and employees. In later years the tendencies of the labor organizations have gone in the opposite direction and, instead of cooperating 'with the engineer, they usually oppose him on the mistaken theory, that labor-saving devices reduce forces, and costs; in this respect, the united Mine Workers of America have been particularly active and, to a very great extent, successful.

ABSTRACT When exposed to microwaves, rocks containing sulphides adsorb energy preferentially over barren gangue and quickly become warmer with minimal energy consumption. This effect makes subsequent machine sorting of ore from waste rocks or overburden possible using infrared sensing. This paper reports on the 2450 MHz microwave response of a variety of sulphide minerals by mesh size and spatial distribution, as they might occur in ore rocks. The implications for infrared ore sorting are discussed.

Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) prevention remains a priority focus within high-risk industries sector. A major mining operation sought to strengthen their approach to the management of high-risk activities through an in-depth review of all historical incidents that had serious injury or fatality potential (SIFp) events (sometimes known as hi-potential events). The analysis found that the organisation invested a disproportionate level of resources, time and effort on low consequence incidents with a high proportion of SIFp incidents going under the radar. It was found that 76 per cent of SIFp incidents were rated in moderate or lower risk categories and conversely, almost half of those incidents with a ‘serious risk’ rating had little or no potential for a serious outcome. As a result of this project, the operation engaged in a renewed focus on critical risk management and enhanced its operating cadence in critical risk for the workforce. This included bow tie analysis, an update to critical risk standards and increased workforce engagement in the use of critical control verifications in the field. Data analytics with lead and lag indicators continue to provide senior leadership team and risk owners with an understanding of exposure for SIFp and control effectiveness. The audience will take away learnings from a real-world case study that provides data-driven insights of the human, local and organisational factors contributing to incidents with SIF potential. In addition, participants will understand the steps taken to categorise and analyse this incident data and the initiatives currently being implemented by the organisation as a result.

The only technical session on Thursday was a continuation of the Symposium on Pyrometry. The members not attending the symposium -made the trip to La Salle. They were welcomed by the Mayor, to whose speech Major Arthur S. Dwight briefly responded. After luncheon the party divided and was taken by automobile to the various chosen points of interest, such as the cement works, the various zinc smelters, the coal mines, and underground cement-rock mines, where underground steam shovels were operating, etc. A special scenic trip was arranged for the ladies. The party returned by special train to Chicago, arriving at 7:30. Those desiring to visit the coal mines at Franklin and Macoupin Coun-ties left by train that evening on a special car for Benton, and were piloted through the field by Mr. Putnam, superintendent of the Old Ben Coal Corpn., Mr. Carroll, assistant general superintendent of the Chicago, Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co., and Carl Scholz, general manager of the Vallier Coal Co. Through the courtesy of the various railroads the visitors were furnished a special coach which took them to the various mines with the least delay and enabled them to see more than would be otherwise possible. Mines 8 and 9 of the Old Ben Coal Corpn., at West Frankfort, were first visited; thence the party proceeded to Orient mine of the Chicago; Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co., where luncheon was served, and then proceeded to Vallier, where both the top and the under-ground workings were inspected. The party returned to. Benton and from there proceeded in automobiles to inspect the washery plant of the United States Fuel Co. at that point; and boarded the train reaching Chicago Saturday morning. Several left Benton for their homes without returning to Chicago.

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the reserves of columbium (niobium) minerals in Arkansas and to develop metallurgical methods for concentrating the minerals and extracting the metal. The columbium resources of central Arkansas were explored by drilling and trenching, and a number of samples were taken. On the basis of this exploration the known reserves of the metal were estimated to be over 78,000,000 pounds. The reserves could possibly be extended by additional exploration to 150,000,000 pounds.

"SUMMARYA chronological list of accidents at metal and nonmetal mines and quarries (excluding coal mines) in the United States in which five or more lives were lost has been compiled. Many accidents were described in more detail because of their unusual features. Tables have been included to indicate the number of major disasters and fatalities by the principal product mined, by State, and by 10-year intervals prior to 1945. The number of men employed to indicate man-hours exposed is unavailable; therefore, a true picture of disaster data by principal product mined, by State, and by 10-year intervals is not possible. However, the data are presented to indicate the causes of major accidents and bring to the attention of those affiliated with metal and nonmetal mines and quarries the hazards involved and lessons that can be practiced to keep such accidents at a minimum.INTRODUCTIONThe Bureau of Mines was requested to compile a chronological list of accidents at metal and nonmetal mines and quarries (excluding coal mines) in the United States in which five or more lives were lost. Data have been assembled on accidents from all causes in these mines and quarries from the earliest available information (describ¬ing an underground mine fire in Nevada in 1869) to the last reported major accident (a fire at a company-owned bunkhouse in Arizona in 1945).The accounts of the accidents were taken from articles in the technical press and from published and unpublished reports of the Bureau of Mines. Many of the accidents have been selected for more detailed descriptions because of the unique circumstances and to show the variety of dangers involved.Tables are included to indicate the number of major accidents, with resultant fatalities, by the principal metal and nonmetal producing groups, by State, and by 10-year intervals previous to 1945. Since the turn of this century, there has been increasing interest in the application of flotation processes to the beneficiation of finely divided minerals of various types, This is reflected by the large numbers of papers dealing with various aspects of this problem published annually both in this country and abroad. For the most part, such papers fall into one of three categories: 1. Those concerned with achieving, by various chemical and/or physical means, a set of conditions under which certain particles become potentially floatable while others do not. 2. Descriptive studies of plants and pilot plants effecting separations between such particles. 3. Studies of the effects of certain design and operating variables on the rates and efficiencies with which such separations can be effected.

"INTRODUCTION The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) Far Site Conventional Facilities are proposed to be sited at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) located within the former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota. The project involves excavation and support of three large caverns which will house four 10 kT fiducial volume liquid argon (LAr) neutrino detectors and cryogenic equipment, as well as numerous ancillary connecting drifts and chambers. This paper describes the geological setting of the project, the geotechnical investigation undertaken nearly a mile underground and the challenges associated with collection of reliable data in a high stress and geologically complex environment. The layout for the new facility will be presented, along with a description of some of the constraints that will impact construction, including shaft access and working within an operating research facility. THE LBNF PROJECT The global neutrino physics community is coming together to develop a leading-edge, dual-site experiment for neutrino science and proton decay studies, the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The facility required for this experiment, the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF), will be an internationally designed, coordinated and funded program, comprising the world's highest-intensity neutrino beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, IL and the infrastructure necessary to support massive deep underground cryogenic detectors 800 miles (1,300 km) downstream at the LBNF Far Site at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), in Lead, South Dakota. The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment is expected to achieve transformative discoveries, making definitive determinations of neutrino properties, the dynamics of the supernovae that produced the heavy elements necessary for life, and the possibility of proton decay. Neutrinos created by the LBNF beamline will travel on the 1,300 km (800 mi) path shown in Figure 1 leading straight through the earth's crust to intercept DUNE's massive, cutting-edge neutrino detector at the Sanford Lab. No tunnel is needed as neutrinos pass easily through soil and rock rarely interacting with the matter. The DUNE far detector will consist of four modules, each of which will be housed in a cryostat containing 17,000 metric tons of liquid argon target material, providing a 10kT fiducial volume. The LBNF Far Site Conventional Facilities project will excavate and fit out a set of four caverns 4850 ft underground in which to place them."
