Oil and gas development in Mississippi during the year 1933 was rather active and a number of important wildcat wells were drilled throughout the state. Mississippi showed an increase in drilling operations during 1933. There were 58 completions from 22 counties during this period, compared with 53 completions in 10 counties during 1932. The Jackson gas field in Hinds and Rankin counties continued to be the most active area with 26 completions, resulting in 17 gas wells, 2 oil wells, and 7 dry holes, compared with 38 gas wells, 1 oil well and 5 dry holes during 1932. A further attempt to extend the producing limits of the Amory gas field resulted in a dry hole. Extensive exploration in south Mississippi has proved the existence of ample source beds and presence of an extensive sandbody near the top of Cockfield. Core tests, supplemented by extensive geophysical work, have been carried on in Jackson, George, Harrison, Pearl River and Stone counties. Exploration will be continued in 1934. The most important deep test drilled in 1933, and the deepest well ever drilled in a southeastern state, was the Eastman Gardner et al., Bank of Seminary No. 1, sec. 26-8N.-15W., Covington County. This well went through about 1300 ft. of Selma chalk, and was abandoned in the Eutaw at 8004 ft. Another interesting operation during the past year was the Foster Creek Oil Corporation's Foster Creek Lumber Co. No. 1, sec. 14-2N.-2W., in the "Eastern Conroe Trend." This test is shut down at 3687 ft. in the Catahoula sandstone and has not encountered any important shows of oil or gas. A total of 107 of the 117 gas wells completed in the Jackson gas field since its discovery in 1930 are still producing, and have a combined open flow of approximately 3,724,896,000 cu. ft. It is reasonable to assume that this area will be rather inactive during 1934 as the maximum daily production during 1933 was 3,476,000 cu. ft. The 10 wells that have gone dead were edge wells. Many of the transport phenomena encountered in proton exchange membrane fuel cells occur intrinsically at the microscale level. Physically representative models that fully account for the salient physico-chemical and transport processes in PEM fuel cells are necessary to achieve truly predictive models that can be used with confidence to: (i) gain a better understanding of in-situ processes and couplings, (ii) explore new concepts, and (iii) support design and optimization. The development of more general, rationally based macroscale models requires use of knowledge on the microscale level to provide guidance, and to determine the required parameters and coefficients (model "constants"). In this paper we present a new membrane transport model, the binary friction membrane model (BFM2), recently developed to account for coupled protonic and water transport in polymer membranes. This general model is based on rational and physical consideration, removes several of the limitations of the empirical models used to date, and is formulated for all purfluoro-sulfonic acid membranes. The use of the BFM2 in a fuel cell model is illustrated highlighting significant performance predictions compared to existing empirical model. The second part of the paper addresses the fundamentals of two-phase transport in hydrophobic gad diffusion media. Computational and experimental visualizations resolving the microscale dynamics of water transport between the fibres of a GDL are presented, revealing transport mechanisms that are, contrary to assumptions used to date, dominated by fingering and channeling.

The creep behavior of Nb(Cb), Ta, Mo, and W was determined under conditions of constant atomic dif-fzisivity, constant stress to elastic modulus ratio, and nearly equivalent grain size, and the steady-state creep rates obtained from these tests were correlated with calculated stacking fault energies for the metals. These results, in conjunction with similar data for several fccMetals,13 suggest that stacking fault energy may influence the creep strength ofbcc metals. The interrelationship between steady-state creep rate, subgrain size, and stacking fault energy was examined. It was found that the subgrain size for a given creep stress, increased as stacking fault energy increased, but that this relationship did not cormpletely account for the effect of stacking fault energy on creep rate. The crystallography and energetics of stacking fault formation in bcc metals has been discussed by a num-ber of authors,1-5 and impurity stabilized stacking faults on (112) planes have been observed in Nb,6,7 w,8,9 Fe,] and V" by transmission electron microscopy. However, a crucial question is whether or not stack-ing faults influence the mechanical strength of bcc metals. Potentially, stacking faults could increase strength by reducing the mobility of the partial dis-locations bounding the fault, by acting as barriers to slip dislocations, and by retarding the climb of dislo-cations during high-temperature deformation. The objective of this study was to seek a correlation be-tween creep strength and stacking fault energy for several bcc metals; namely, Nb, Ta, Mo, and W. IMD nificantly affects the creep resistance of fcc metals is stacking fault energy, and creep rate has been shown to vary directly with stacking fault energy to the 3.5 power." In the latter investigation, four fcc metals of widely different stacking fault energies (Ag, Cu, Ni, and Al) were creep tested at a constant stress to modulus ratio of 1.21 x 10-4, at a constant diffusivity of 2.7 x 10-12 sq cm per sec, and at nearly equivalent grain sizes of about 0.7 mm. The creep data were then correlated with stacking fault energies. In the present study, a similar procedure was followed. All materials used in this work were consolidated by powder metallurgy techniques. Impurity contents in the as-received materials are listed in Table I. Chemical analyses showed that no measurable contamination of the test specimens occurred during pretest annealing treatments or creep testing. Specimens with a gage section 0.75 by 0.125 by 0.050 in. were creep tested in tension in a vacuum of less than 10-9 torr. Deformation at temperature was measured by tracking fiducial marks on the gage section of the specimen with an optical comparator. Printed circuit boards (PCBs) of varying compositions have been converted by incineration and following melting into an environmental agreeable slag and a copper-nickel-tin alloy, containing the precious metals. The environmental compatibility of the slag was determined according to the German standard DIN 38414 - Part 4; pollutants&apos; concentration in the lixiviates is smaller than the thresholds of drinking water (CE-Standards). Each experiment the charge were 500g scrap from PCBs and ca. 100g slag forming material. The products were a kind of mullite slag, poor on iron, which was recirculated, and an alloy containing up to 0.3% Gold. With a burner to the retort coal gas, the waste gas was burned without soot, and the produced mixed zinc-lead oxide containing silver was collected in the flue dust.

Las plantas concentradoras de producción de Cu tienen como equipos críticos, en el procesamiento del mineral, a los molinos de bolas. Estos molinos están revestidos con liners metálicos o híbridos para proteger la superficie interior del cuerpo cilíndrico o shell de la abrasión y desgaste, ocasionados por el impacto de los medios de molienda como son las bolas de acero y el mineral. Uno de los problemas en molinos de bolas es la rotura de los pernos que sostienen dichos liners. Al romperse estos pernos, el liner cae impactando en su trayectoria a los demás, ocasionando la rotura masiva de éstos con el riesgo de perforar el shell. Previendo lo anterior, se detiene el molino e ingresa para la reposición de dichos pernos y se elimina el riesgo de caída del liner.

ABSTRACT: When exposed to microwaves, rocks containing sulphides adsorb energy preferentially over barren gangue and quickly become warmer with minimal energy consumption. This effect makes subsequent machine sorting of ore from waste rocks or overburden possible using infrared sensing. This paper reports on the 2450 MHz microwave response of a variety of sulphide minerals by mesh size and spatial distribution, as they might occur in ore rocks. The implications for infrared ore sorting are discussed.

Actualmente estos mecanismos tienen muchas dificultades, principalmente en las comunicaciones, debido a la volatilidad de las labores, costos altos de instalación y daños físicos a los medios de comunicación existentes (fibra óptica, cables coaxiales y leaky feeder), lo que dificulta principalmente la extracción de datos de los equipos móviles livianos y pesados. En este trabajo se presenta un nuevo medio de comunicación que se adapta a la volatilidad de las labores mineras, tiene bajo costo de instalación y está exento de sufrir daños físicos en su trayecto, por lo que garantiza una alta disponibilidad y fiabilidad de la transferencia de información del subterráneo hacia los centros de control existentes, donde la información es procesada, a la vez que facilita la aplicación de los mecanismos de control para la optimización de los procesos productivos.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the interaction of longwall shield supports and adjacent strata at the Meigs No. 31 Mine in southeastern Ohio. Twenty-three legs of twenty shields at midface were instrumented with pressure transducers and monitored for 11 weeks. During the project, leg setting pressures were reduced twice to determine the effect of setting pressure on shield-strata interaction. No correlation was observed between setting pressure and leg loading rates. The shield loading profiles were consistent with a model in which the roof consists of two zones, a thin immediate roof loading the shields well below the typical setting force and a main roof zone essentially supported by the coal and gob and loading shields through its convergence. This model was used to develop an equation for estimating average loading rates at the site. The only variable of the equation is time, and the equation consists of an exponential term to account for the immediate roof loading and a linear term to account for main roof loading. The equation gave good correlation with average loading rates, but the variation in loading from cycle to cycle was too great for the equation to give good predictions of individual cycle loading rates.

The efficient and profit-maximising daily and long-term management of the Vera Nancy resource depends on decisions based upon assay data. This paper examines the range of sample sources, the methods of sample collection, assay techniques and Quality Assurance used by the mine. The orebody has a relatively low nugget effect for a gold mine (around 25 per cent) and this greatly assists in reducing sampling error and producing reliable assay data for production decision-making. Reconciliation between mine and back-calculated mill grades generally sees the mine under-calling mill grades by around four per cent.

During the pyrometallurgical processes, a substantial quantity of high-temperature ironmaking and steelmaking slags, generated at temperatures ranging from 1400 to 1600°C, is wasted, as the heat contained in these slags is released into the environment during the tapping process without effective utilisation. On the other hand, a significant amount of energy is required to reheat the cold materials for the manufacturing of glass and mineral-wool, often necessitating the addition of high-silica materials to facilitate the production process. In this study, an innovative approach is presented to harness the heat present in molten metallurgical slags to directly produce new raw materials for glass and mineral-wool manufacturing while simultaneously reducing energy consumption and mitigating CO2 emissions. The theoretical amount of waste glass that can be effectively added in the process has been estimated via thermodynamic calculation. Experimental assessments were conducted to examine the impact of high-silica waste materials on the dissolution, melting and fluidity. Potential recipes for glass and mineral-wool manufacturing were suggested and an assessment of the energy savings, and reduction in CO2 emissions with manufacturing of glass and mineral-wool using this innovative approach were included. It was determined that the processes could lead to a reduction of over 26 kg of CO2 emissions per 100 kg of new material used, primarily due to the utilisation of heat from slag and the accelerated smelting process.

THE ORIGINAL HUDSON RIVER TUNNEL. NOT quite forty years ago a man of uncommon character entered New York. He had several hundred thousand dollars earned by railroad building in the Nest. He was not an engineer, but he had ideas of engineering work which he was destined to prove correct.. He introduced new ways of tunneling, but his plans had only one distinguishing feature-they were simply interesting as showing how such work could be done; they added nothing to the science, have never been used since his clay, and never will be used again. Engineers of repute ridiculed his proposition ; he was an Ishmael in the profession. But if engineers looked askance at him, he certainly returned their contempt in the heartiest fashion, and had no hesitancy about expressing his views of them individually and collectively. This worked to. his disadvantage when he afterward tried to raise the means to go on with the work. He found that the opinion of engineers was respected by financiers, and that money would not flow contrary to their advice. While his conception of large constructions was distinguishingly original, much more marked was his method of demonstrating the feasibility of, his schemes. In the present clays of great undertakings it is the custom to make the other man pay for the experiments. But the man from the West had other notions of how the thing ought to be done. Having wonderful confidence in his own ability and in his perception of the task before him, he used up all his own money before seeking outside assistance. America&apos;s industry uses about 44% of the total energy consumed by the nation directly as fuel burned in industrial plants or indirectly as fuel burned by utilities to provide electric power. In addition, industry requires raw materials or feed stocks derived from fuel sources or having fuel value. This represents about 11% of total U. S. energy consumption, bringing industry&apos;s portion to about 55%. Adding that portion of energy consumption required by the transportation sector to move raw materials, intermediates, and finished products, the total energy impact of industry approaches 213 of total U. S. consumption. It is obvious that American industry has the largest share in the task of balancing energy demand and supply. What are we going to do? -- We must increase the supply of energy and increase the beneficial results obtained from each unit expended. Both avenues, unfortunately, are limited in extent and speed. Increases in supply cannot occur without drastic and permanent increases in cost. These increases in cost are un- desirable and inflationary but do provide incentive for the rational businessman to expend the effort and money required to improve the effectiveness of energy in industry.

Rare metal ores have those features of high industrial value and bad performance in ore separation. Most of rare metals ores are with low grade of valuable components, rareness of useful minerals, complicated combination of associated minerals and high difficulty in separation and enrichment of minerals. For those single (Ta, Nb) or (Ta, Nb, Sn) ore occurred in granite and pegmatite, the ways of gravity separation and magneto electric separation to concentrate (Ta, Nb) minerals are adopted. There are many mines being explored successfully both at home and aboard. While, for complex (Nb-Zr-REE) ores associated with Be and Ti minerals, they are commonly considered as rich rare metals ore but more difficult to process. One of rare metals mine in Inner Mongolia has the features as with large reserves and high grade of columbium and zirconium and accompanies with REE and beryllium, therefore with significant industrial value. After the utilization of research method of process mineralogy, detailed mineralogy research has been made on the rare metals ore. The test results show that there are abroad isomorphism replacements among such elements, such as Ti, Mn, Fe, Nb and Ta, between Be and REE in metallic oxide minerals of that ore, which makes the mineral composition of that ore extremely complicated. This research identifies clearly the mineral composition, and investigate at the technological property and the occurrence of those elements as Nb, Zr, Be and REE in the rare metal ore. The achievements of this research provide important mineralogy basis for ore dressing research of refractory rare metallic ores.

"Under the term ""paleogeomorphology"" are grouped together all geo-morphological phenomena which are recognizable in subsurface geology. Since geomorphology is the science of the earth's relief features, paleogeomorphology is the science of buried relief features. Such features are of importance to the petroleum geologist whenever they lead to the trapping of hydrocarbons. In areas where these features abound -and western Canada certainly is such an area -pale-ogeomorphology ranks in importance with stratigraphy and structural geology as a hydrocarbon-finding tool. Hydrocarbons may be trapped either directly or indirectly due to paleogeomorphological processes. Both types of traps may occur either below the morphological surface or above (against) it. Several examples of types of paleogeomorphological traps are given. A new classification of geomorphological .features is proposed, with a subdivision into two main groups: constructive and destructive geomorphic processes. Of the many geomorphic classifications, some are of greater interest to the petroleum geologist in western -Canada than others. In the present paper the morphology of reefs and of buried erosional land forms are discussed in greater detail. In dealing with the reefs of the Devonian Leduc formation in Alberta, it is found that several groups of reefs can be distinguished and that each group presents a separate set of morphological characteristics. The effects of erosion and weathering are exemplified mostly in the Devonian, Mississippian and Jurassic of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Hydrocarbon traps occur below the highs on the erosional surface as well as in sands laid down in the lows of that surface. The rules which govern the formation of ancient landscape forms are worked out, using an area in southeastern Saskatchewan as an example."

A liga de Níquel 718 é bastante requisitada para aplicações na indústria aeroespacial devido as suas excelentes propriedades. Endurecida por precipitação, a liga apresenta alta resistência mecânica sob condições extremas e ambientes severos, representando um avanço tecnológico significativo na produção de motores aeroespaciais. Os reparos realizados nos motores são feitos por diferentes processos, porém muitas vezes são realizados até que as especificações estruturais deixem de ser atendidas. Após os reparos, a liga é solubilizada em temperatura inferior a temperatura solvus da fase d, o que pode levar a precipitação crescente desta fase, podendo impactar nas propriedades da liga. O intuito do presente trabalho é avaliar o efeito de múltiplos ciclos de tratamentos térmicos de solubilização e envelhecimento na microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas da liga. Foi possível observar que os múltiplos ciclos induzem uma crescente formação de fase d, reduzindo a resistência mecânica da liga.

Mining of the zinc, lead and silver deposit at the Broken Hill Southern Operations site has been occurring for over 100 years. As a result of this, a significant amount of high-grade ore is now taken from narrow remnant pillars left between old stopes and zones of previously mined ground. Stopes have been filled with either hydraulic fill (also known as ‘sandfill’), cemented hydraulic fill (cemented sandfill), waste rock backfill or a mixture of these fill types.In the last ten years, there has been considerable success mining through narrow pillars where sandfill is exposed in the development face and/or walls using a ‘shell’ support regime, wherein a layer of bolted mesh is sandwiched between two layers of sprayed fibrecrete (25 mm fibrecrete, then mesh and bolt, followed by a final 50 mm layer of fibrecrete). Shell support is also used in very poor, broken, relaxed ground conditions and in areas filled with cemented fill (sandfill with a minimum four per cent cement content).The next stage of innovation has been to develop a technique for mining through old stope voids filled with uncemented sandfill, known locally as ‘contours’ (old cut-and-fill working), an activity where unconsolidated sandfill can run at the face and from the backs. The challenge is to prevent exposed sandfill in the face and the backs from failing before it can be supported.To achieve this, the Southern Operations mine has implemented a technique in which 6 m long spiling bars are used to strengthen and stabilise the sandfill in front of the face. The hollow steel bars are driven in around the heading perimeter in a closely spaced pattern then pumped full of grout. The bars and the grout stabilise the sandfill in front of the face, preventing it from failing into the drive during excavation and prior to further support being installed.A final support system consisting of shotcrete, mesh, bolts and steel girders is installed as excavation progresses. Both the initial and final support systems are essentially passive support systems designed for a low-stress environment (as the stress originates mostly from the mass of unconsolidated sandfill).This process is slow and labour intensive. Fifteen separate cycles of people/machinery are needed to progress one equivalent heading cut (compared to six for a standard fibrecrete- and bolt pattern-supported rock face heading). This slow pace introduces scheduling challenges, but the process opens up parts of the orebody that were previously uneconomical to mine.CITATION:Carroll, D, 2014. Mill drums are essential equipment in various industries for the comminution of materials. To optimize their design and operation for efficient and cost-effective processing, it is necessary to understand the behavior of the mill drum under various operating conditions. This study investigates the behavior of a mill drum using a combination of experimental and numerical methods. The factors that can influence the behavior of the mill drum, such as the size and shape of the mill, grinding media, rotational speed, filling level, and material properties, are discussed. Experimental methods can be limited in obtaining measurements of internal processes, so numerical methods such as the Discrete Element Method (DEM) are also used to simulate the behavior of the mill drum. In this study, the experimental measurements of the motion of the grinding media are obtained using computer vision methods, and the numerical simulations are calibrated using the experimental results. A designed experiment approach is used to evaluate the performance of the mill drum under various operating conditions. The results of this study can be useful for the design and optimization of mill drums to achieve better performance and energy efficiency.

"A new apparatus has been devised for quickly and precisely analyzing natural gas for its helium content. The following outstanding advantages make it far superior to any equipment now available for the purpose.3/4/5/6/1. It enables more rapid determinations to be made.2. It has far greater sensitivity than previous apparatus. 3. It is portable.Fifty or more samples may be analyzed in an 8-hour day with the new apparatus and procedure. A maximum of about 10 samples per day could be analyzed with previous apparatus. In the apparatus described, the volume of pure helium obtained from a sample is determined by measuring the pressures created by that pure helium when it is expanded into a constant calibrated volume. In older methods the pure helium separated from a sample is pumped into a burette and measured at atmospheric pressure. The new apparatus and Procedure used with it reduce the average time for an analysis from about 40 minutes to less than 10 minutes,Samples containing a few thousandths of a percent helium may be analyzed as readily as samples containing 1 percent or more, This was not possible with former apparatus. Duplicate samples containing a few thousandths of a percent helium have been analyzed, results checking to one ten-thousandth of a percent. Attempts to measure a corresponding volume of helium in a burette at atmospheric pressure become futile. The ability to determine very small quantities of helium has become of great importance recently in gas- and oil-field engineering studies such Os the utilization of helium as a tracer gas in following the movement of gases through underground structures.A complete apparatus was recently carried more than a thousand miles in a passenger automobile. It arrived without breakage, was .set up and ready to make an analysis in a few hours. .Former apparatus was not portable. The portability of the present apparatus permits taking the apparatus to the field for more efficient prosecution of field engineering problems. The only services required in the field are electricity, tap water, and a source of liquid air or liquid nitrogen.The principle involved is based upon the fact that large volumes of all the constituents usually found in natural gas, except helium, are adsorbed quantitatively on cocoanut charcoal that has been cooled to the temperatures of liquid air. A volume of sample is measured and transferred to a tube of cocoanut charcoal maintained at the temperature of liquid air.
