"Canada developed pioneering rare earth solvent extraction methods to recover the rare earths and thorium as by-products of uranium recovery operations in Elliot Lake, Ontario, and was a major supplier of these key elements from about 1960 until 1990. At one stage, Elliot Lake was supplying perhaps one third of the world’s yttrium as well as much of its thorium. This paper reviews the development of Canada’s early rare earth and thorium production facilities. INTRODUCTIONThe rare earths and thorium were first identified in the early 19th century but were little more than curiosities for the next century. However, in the mid-1960s the invention of rare earth-based phosphors for the cathode ray picture tube used in colour television sets launched a major demand for certain rare earths.The use of thorium as an alloying agent in aircraft and missiles grew rapidly in the late 1950s. In the same period, demand for uranium for both weapons and power production soared. Also in the late 1950s, the Elliot Lake uranium-thorium-rare earth deposits (also known as the Blind River deposits) were discovered. This conjugation of events led to uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp, quickly followed by the co-production of thorium and, later, the rare earths.Uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp continued from 1955 to 1996. Thorium was produced continuously from 1959 to 1969. Rare earths were produced, intermittently, from 1965 to 1990. Complete production records are not readily available but unquestionably Elliot Lake made a significant contribution to world thorium and the rare earth production. This paper, presented earlier in an abbreviated form (Goode, 2012), is intended to present as much of the information that is available."

IN recent years, exploration and development by diamond drilling has become a popular attack on the problem of finding new ore shoots and developing extensions of known shoots. Diamond drilling has been used in recent years in extensive sampling of disseminated copper deposits, in preference to churn drilling. At the Harvard gold mine, near Jamestown, California, Philip R. Bradley, Jr., general superintendent, reports that: "The Harvard work was a singular example of the reliance that can be placed on diamond drilling in evaluating an ore body." Drilling at the Harvard mine will be discussed in a subsequent section of the paper. So popular has diamond drilling become, indeed, that many who have had slight experience with drilling are inclined to regard it as a cheap cure-all. This paper proposes to show some of the limitations on the application of drilling and some of the steps that should be followed in drilling programs to obtain reliable results. COST OF DRILLING Drilling has the advantage, over shaft sinking and drifting, of lower cost and greater speed. As compared with churn drilling, the advantage of bringing up a coherent sample instead of fine cuttings for a sample is obvious. Diamond drilling is generally more expensive, however, and more engineering effort is required in combining the average of core and sludge samples. Exploration of drift walls by hammer drills to a depth of less than 50 ft. is generally cheaper than diamond drilling, but beyond this depth the diamond drill is cheaper and more efficient. The principal factor in determining cost of drilling is the character of the ground drilled. Broken ground with many fissures is most expensive to drill. Hard ground is less of a problem with diamond drills than with ordinary machine drills. Hardness or softness affects only the speed of drilling. Caving, easily washed, sandy or clayey ground requires continual cementing and casing, which is the greatest cost problem. Thus, soft, incompetent ground is more costly to drill than hard, massive ground. Cost of drilling per foot in good to fair ground varies from less than $1 per foot, achieved in some districts in Ontario, the Mother Lode, and Missouri, to $5 per foot in many western states. In bad drilling ground, costs may range from $5 to $15 or more per foot, thus approaching the cost of drifting. Other factors that increase the cost per foot are: I. Short total length of hole drilled, so that the cost of moving in crews and equipment must be spread over a relatively few feet. 2. Cost of drilling per foot increases with depth beyond about 500 ft., as more time is consumed in pulling rods. 3. Cost of preparing drilling stations, getting air underground to stations, etc. 4. Inaccessibility and lack of water on the job make for higher costs.

The performance of the V-Day Mine near Danville, Illinois has been evaluated from data extending over about a 20 year period. The area included in this study involves over 16 acres. Essentially this entire area has progressively subsided. Extensive data has been collected on the geologic and mining conditions, the subsidence movements, as well as on the response of the surface structures to the subsidence. In this paper a detailed summary of the site conditions is given, and the mechanics of progressive failure of the studied room and pillar mine is postulated. These progressive long-term failures of the V-Day are then compared to other similar mine failures in Illinois. Some overall, but tentative, long-term strength evaluations are presented as well.

Elevation of surface charge density on colloidal particles in the presence of a high potential electrostatic field is demonstrated as a viable technique for preventing the accumulation of solids in solvent extraction circuits. The effect of the technique is manifest by relative turbidity measurements between pregnant leach solution and raffinate, by changes in the character of the sludge accumulations, by alteration of the zeta potential of particulates, and by a general reduction in the mass of solids.

While a sizable amount of data exist as to the activity and distribution of minor elements between matte and metal, there has been no unifying theory presented delineating the form of dissolution of these elements in molten sulfides. In order to alleviate that deficiency the literature concerning the behavior of As, Sb, Bi and Pb in mattes is reviewed. Models present in the literature, regarding the thermochemical behavior of minor elements, are tested, and new models are presented and evaluated using thermodynamic theory. The results of those analyses are used to predict optimum conditions for the volatilization of minor elements. The dearth of data on the behavior of minor elements in nickel mattes requires that this review focus on copper- iron mattes. An effort is made, however, to utilize basic knowledge regarding nickel sulfides and the interaction of nickel with the minor elements to predict the behavior of those elements in nickel-copper and nickel-iron mattes.

Several final pits in the Seneca No. 1 Surface Coal Mine were abandoned in the 1960's without king reclaimed. In addition, a progressive landslide aggravated by the abandoned mine land conditions was threatening a county mad and private property. An AML-funded project to stabilize the landslide and reclaim the final pits was completed in 1986 for the Colorado Division of Mines and Geology (formerly Colorado Mine Land Reclamation Division). The site was visited after ten growing seasons. The land is stable and the vegetation re-establishment is strong. Volunteer native plant species are now invading the reclaimed sites.

The conclusions reached by den Tex after a study of the fabric of some rocks from Broken Hill have been used to support the epigenetic hypothesis for the origin of the ore, first by Edwards (1959, p. 70) and then by Stillwell (1962, p. 131) in his criticism of Segnit's (1961) views. Den Tex claimed that the petrofabric study provided "independent evidence that the ore, at least in its present form, post-dates all events of a diastrophic nature in the area concerned".Repetition of this claim by Edwards and by Stillwell and the lack of any criticism of den Tex's work for more than three years implies its general acceptance by geologists in Australia. Therefore it appears necessary to examine parts of den Tex's paper in detail to show that his, conclusions are unwarranted. The major weaknesses in his study are that1. the petrofabric study was inadequate to warrant any major conclusions, and2. the petrofabric data allow alternative conclusions.Den Tex made a single visit to the field, collected six carefully selected specimens and presented quartz and· biotitepetrofabric diagrams for two specimens, quartz-diagrams alone for three more and included three diagrams of the orientation of c-axes and fractures in one specimen. It is not reasonable to come to firm conclusions about the origin of such a complex area as Broken Hill on such inadequate data, despite den Tex's claim (p. 87, lines 22 and 23) that "a thorough investigation of the quartz-fabric of the wall rock was undertaken".Den Tex's interpretation of each diagram is open to criticism, and alternative (and to my mind, preferable) interpretations may be made. This circular is part 2 of the third subject (entitled "Excavation") of a series summarizing; the technical problems involved in the production and preparation of sand and gravel. Part 1 discussed the use of power shovels, draglines, and excavator cranes. This paper discusses the use of the power scraper, slackline cableway excavator, and hydraulic monitor, and part 3 will discuss the use of various types of dredges. Subsequent papers in the series will discuss the use of haulage equipment, the application of both excavating and haulage equipment to various types of deposits, and operating costs. THE POWER SCRAPER The power scraper is a younger member of the various forms of gravel excavators. It is a mechanized enlargement of the slip scraper and other scrapers which depend upon animals for power and has a greater range of operation from a single set-up than any other excavation unit except the slackline cableway excavator.

A mineral grain finder is described which is easily constructed to fit onto the stage of a standard reflected light ore microscope.The device is most useful in relocating particular grains or mineral associations on 30 mm diameter polished sections. The use of the grain finder in the teaching of ore microscopy is outlined.

The nonmetallic minerals work of the Bureau of Mines started with the organization of the Mineral Technology Division in 1912. A special experiment station devoted to the mining, preparation, and processing of nonmetallic minerals was established in 1923 at New Brunswick, N. J., and concentration problems on nonmetallic minerals of all kinds also were studied at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station at Rolla, Mo. In July 1936 the Nonmetals Division was organized, and in May 1937 the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station at New Brunswick, N. J., was moved to and made a part of the new Eastern Experiment Station at College Park, Md. At present the Nonmetals Division operates at three points: The Eastern Experiment Station, College Park, Md., which is headquarters for the division chief; the Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and the Northwest Experiment Station, Seattle, Wash., where coal washing and preparation studies are included with those on nonmetallic minerals. Sand, gravel, and aggregate work is carried on by the Mining Division, as sand and gravel preparation are intimately associated with mining methods. The Economics Branch of the Bureau of Mines also prepares occasional papers on nonmetallic technologic subjects in connection with the presentation of statistics on a particular industry and reviews of the mineral industry in foreign countries for use in the monthly publication, "Mineral Trade Notes."

When defining a ?megaproject,? one need only to look at Seattle, WA?s State Route 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement project. This $3.1-billion project is one of the largest of its kind in the world, and includes the use of the world?s largest tunnel boring machine (TBM). However, for as large as the Alaskan Way project is ? especially given the size of the TBM being used ? there are several other megaprojects underway around the world. Each has its own challenges that require innovative design techniques and financing arrangements, as well as variations on established tunneling technologies. So it was that 266 tunneling and underground construction professionals ? owners, contractors and engineers ? convened in Seattle in November for the Cutting Edge Conference on Megaprojects. This was the second joint meeting between the Underground Construction Association of SME and the North American Tunneling Journal. The first joint conference took place in April 2012 in Miami, FL and attracted 238 attendees. A third joint conference, to be held in 2014, is in the planning stage. The key reason Seattle was chosen as the site of the megaprojects conference is the Alaskan Way Viaduct project. Before the conference began, many of the attendees were able to visit the project and get a close look at Bertha, the Hitachi Zosen earth pressure balance TBM that is boring the tunnel. In addition, the conference included an exhibit that attracted 20 industry suppliers, up from 10 the previous year in Miami. The 25 presentations during the two-day conference covered all aspects of the tunneling and underground construction of megaprojects. Topics included the Alaskan Way Viaduct project; considerations for procurement and contracting; political risk, financing and insurance; international megaprojects; risk and risk sharing and project delivery. Each session concluded with panel discussions.

The Huber-Rydalch manganese property is in the Erickson mining district of Tooele County, Utah. The district covers the southern part of Simpson Mountains, a block rising abruptly above the surrounding desert floor (fig. 1). The Ruber-Rydalch deposits and other deposits in the Simpson Mountains manganese area were examined by Bureau of Mines engineers during 1940 and 1942 under the strategic minerals program. J. T. Pardee visited the district briefly in 1918. A. E. Granger and A. F. Shride, of the Federal Geological Survey, mapped the geology of the area in 1942 and 1943. The manganese deposits occur as veinlike masses in brecciated fault zones that traverse Cambrian and pre-Cambrian quartzite, quartzite conglomerate, and phyllite. The deposits now exposed near the surface represent the oxidized portions of primary mineralization originally containing rhodochrosite and rhodonite associated with quartz and calcite and small quantities of pyrite, galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite. The oxide ore is composed of manganite, pyrolusite, psilomelans, and wad in a gangue of quartz, calcite, and brecciated quartzite.

VISIT TO HENDRINA POWER STATION AND OPTIMUM COLLIERY A visit to Hendrina Power Station and the Optimum Colliery, contractually committed to supply the coal for the power station, took place on the 20th September, 1972. INTERNATIONAL IRON AND STEEL CONGRESS This congress will be held in Dlisseldorf from May 23rd to 30th, 1974. The main theme is "Metallurgical Technology of Iron and Steplml1king".

FLUORSPAR, a little known non-metallic mineral, referred to technically as fluorite, chemically as calcium fluoride, is a compound of calcium and fluorine in the ratio of one molecule of calcium to two of fluorine. By weight it is composed of 51.3 per cent of calcium and 48.7 per cent of fluorine. Its specific gravity is 3.2. It is brittle, has a hardness of four and can be easily scratched with a knife. It weighs about 200 Ib. per cubic foot and has a melting point of 1650" F. The color of fluorspar ranges from pure white and opaque white, according to its purity, to various hues of yellow, green, pink, lavender, blue and brown, to bluish black. Although the lumps have color, when ground the fluorspar becomes pure white. The reason for this is because the mineral usually carries no fixed pigment, the color being produced by the re- fraction of light rays within the crystal structure and small quantities of organic matter which readily oxidizes. It crystallizes in the isometric system with perfect octahedral cleavages.

"IntroductionThe Chairman, in his speech to this body last year in Montreal, stated that the Dominion Coal Board looked to and depended upon the Bureau of Statistics for statistical material, and the Bureau does collect and publish monthly and annual data on coal. It may therefore be asked why an officer of the Dominion Coal Board should prepare and give a talk on statistics.I would explain that it has been our experience in the Board that, since the supply and consumption of coal in Canada is subject to a seasonal ebb and flow, it can be more profitably studied on the basis of a twelve-month period ending on March 31st than of a calendar year, since the end of March does represent a fairly stable end point in this ebb and flow. The figures are not prepared or published by the Bureau on that basis and it has therefore been thought that a presentation on this fiscal-year period would be of interest. The Bureau of Statistics has agreed that this may be valuable and all the data here presented are based on the reports secured from various sources by the Mining, Metallurgical and Chemical Division, Dominion Bureau of Statistics. The only contribution by either myself or the staff of the Dominion Coal Board has been the tabulation in a different twelve month period, and the comments upon the picture presented.It should be noted that the data for the month of March, 1950, are not available in all cases and consequently the figures for that year contain an estimate for this month."

"The Navan zinc-lead ore deposit (70 million tonnes) is hosted principally (97%) by the Meath Formation (Lower Carboniferous, Courceyan, Navan Group), comprising a lower, mainly carbonate mudstone unit, the Stackallan Member, and an upper grainstone-dominated unit. TheStackallan Member, about 60 m thick, comprises about 35 peritidal cycles including an oolitic grain-stone interval. Grainstones forming the upper part of the formation, about 150 m thick, comprise at least six shallowing-upward ramp cycles. Emergence horizons are indicated by subaerial dissolution surfaces, in situ breccias, and a single palaeosol.Most dolomitization at Navan is con?ned to the Meath Formation. The linear dolomite body,trending NE-SW, has a ?attened, laterally limited, tabular geometry in cross-section, suggesting that dolomitizing ?uids initially rose vertically, cross-cutting stratigraphic and sedimentological bound-aries, although ?uid ?ow was subsequently controlled by these features.Three stages of dolomitization are indicated by textural relationships, cathodoluminescence (CL),oxygen isotopes, and ?uid inclusion data. Stage 1 crystals, with generally dully luminescing cores and up to six overlying subsidiary zones, are the main replacive phase. Crystal surfaces are commonly corroded and overlain by bright stage 2 rhombs (which also form new nuclei lining molds and fractures). Three subsets of zones are present in stage 2 crystals: bright, non-luminescent, and dull; these are locally separated by additional corrosion surfaces. Stage 3 comprises relatively large baroque crystals, generally dully luminescent but with up to seven sub-zones. Isotopic and ?uid inclusion data suggest growth of successive stages from waters which became progressively hotter(60°–160°C).The distribution of the ores follows the dolomite trend. Ores were precipitated between Stages1 and 2 of dolomite growth, following Stage 2, and also during the nucleation and growth of Stage3 crystals. Dolomitization and mineralization appear to have been temporally and genetically related. The cyclic sedimentation of the host rocks, which accentuates lithological and petrographical contrasts between depositional units, controlled dolomitization. The relationship between dolomitization and mineralization, which is closely associated with faults, provides powerful exploration criteria. The recognition of these features in limestones elsewhere in the Irish ore ?eld may point toward unrecognized zinc-lead prospects."

Hillgrove Resources (HGO) commenced open pit mining in 2011 and from 2011 to 2016 the geology team experienced a consistent negative reconciliation between grade control estimated copper (Cu) grade and the mill received grade. For the first four years, despite trialling various grade control strategies, the monthly variance between geology and mill copper grades fluctuated between -5 per cent to -17 per cent Cu metal depending on the style of mineralisation.In 2015, HGO embarked on various measures which resulted in changes to grade control practices under the advice of consultants. These changes to grade control sampling, estimation and block out practices resulted in six to seven months of consistently poor Mine to Mill reconciliations from -25 per cent to -28 per cent Cu.In an effort to mitigate these poor reconciliations the geology team reintroduced the preconsultant block out and geology driven grade control methods. Blockout reconciliations from this point emulated those seen originally from -8 per cent to -12 per cent (Cu per cent). Early in 2016 the geology team introduced conditional simulation for grade control as opposed to ordinary kriging to better characterise the grade distribution, introduced separate estimation parameters appropriate for every zone of mineralisation, implemented a maximum profit function to optimise the selection of ore and waste, and retained the geology driven block out processes. Since March 2016 the mine has experienced consecutive months of positive Mine to Mill reconciliations, the first seen in six years. Year to date the expected copper metal is within 1 per cent of mill reconciled copper metal.This paper will compare the various sampling methods, estimation algorithms and block out procedures from the past six years to arrive at a robust open pit operating procedure applicable for mineralisation with high short scale variability.CITATION:Reid, M and Arbon, H, 2017. The geologist is often called upon to give judgment on the possibilities of reviving a former mining field presumably worked out as far as the evidence then available indicated. From time to time, scarcity and consequent high prices of metals has led to there-examination of many old fields. The possibility of resuming investigation on them where the practical miner ceased work, even where he had the aid of the trained geologist, has long since disappeared.Means of access to mines have been removed and water fills the workings. Hence an indirect mode of attack becomes essential.This method depends mainly on past history, and may be described as a reaching out by faith supported by shrewd guessing from the known to the unknown. Apart from whatever general intelligent observations may be made in situ of the evidence of former mining activity, the method depends largely on the examination of the past history of the field as revealed in the official records, company reports, plans of underground workings, local newspaper accounts, and the testimony of practical miners formerly employedon the field, the' reliability of which has to be carefully sifted. The matter derived from the examination of these sources must next be rigorously collated and correlated where possible. When the review of all individu!1l features and aspects has been completed, tentative and speculative conclusions may be drawn which, though not verifiable before the event, will usually prove to be more serviceable guides in exploratory operations than mere "blind stabbing."As an actual illustration of what is involved in the mode of procedure outlined above, the following is the description of an investigation in which the writer took part.In 1937, during the course of the Commonwealth Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia, a detailed geological investigation was undertaken of the Croydon gold field, situated near the south-eastern. extremity of the Gulf of Carpentaria in North Queensland.The history of the field briefly is as follows: It was discovered in 1885, reached its peak of production 1896, declining thereafter till 1906, when operations ceased. The total production was about 1,000,000 ounces of gold bullion, containing approximately 40 per cent. of silver. The gold bullion was won from flat-dipping quartz reefs, which yielded an average of 2.oz. to the ton, and the maximum depth to which production occurred was 500 feet. Subsequent prospecting below this depth failed to locate further ore.In consequence of the inaccessibility of the mines and the almost total masking of the' surface by alluvium, the investigation of future possibilities became largely an. office ,study, which was conducted under the following headings:-1. THE USE of higher grade charges in blast furnaces in the form of sintered or pelletized concentrates has been increasing rapidly. The question of beneficiation of iron ores for this purpose is therefore receiving much attention as more deposits are developed. Many iron ores may respond well to magnetic roasting procedures followed by magnetic concentration, however, in most cases other more standard ore dressing methods are competitive and cheaper. For magnetic roasting as applied to iron ore beneficiation, the present question is "Can it be economically justified in situations where it appears to produce good results?"
