The cheapest method of handling gravel in placer mining operations is by hydraulic mining . In working gravel deposits by hydraulic mining , it is essential that an abundant supply of water under sufficient head can be economically developed and that there is sufficient grade for sluice boxes and for disposal of the tailing . Without dumping facilities , simple hydraulic mining is an impossibility . The cost of hydraulic mining may range from 2 cents a yard under favorable condıtions to 12 or even 20 cents under less favorable conditions and to 35 cents or more a yard in Alaska , according to conditions of operation , and if frozen gravel is encountered . When it is necessary to elevate gravel , the costs may exceed 60 cents a cubic yard . When the natural conditions do not permit of hydraulic pining proper , other methods of elevating the grade are employed , some of which are described below . Bucket dredging has replaced hydraulic mining in importance in California and other states where hydraulic mining was once extensively carried on , and is by far the cheapest method of elevating gravel when mechanical methods are required and the physical conditions are suitable for dredging . Dredging costs vary greatly under the different conditions encountered , and the total amount of gold to be recovered must of course be enough to warrant the cost of a dredge installation . The objective of this research was separation of one highly conductive mineral from a second conductive mineral , a procedure which is impractical in commercial electrostatic separators using metal rolls . Such separators permit separation of nonconductive from conductive minerals . A new technique involved use of carrier electrode rolls specially prepared by anodizing and / or oxidizing at high temperatures to form suitable oxide surfaces . Specific oxides included aluminum , copper , and nickel . The significant result provided by the new surfaces was the extension of the separation range to higher conductivities , an extension in relative mineral conductivity from 10-14 mhos . The results are in accordance with the blocking- layer theory .

"Particle-bed compressive stressing is the main work mechanism of comminution by high pressure grinding rolls(HPGR). An experimental study on comminution and mineral liberation of two copper sulfide ores was carried out using a piston-die compressive stressing rig to simulate the situation of comminution with HPGR as the final-grinding device. The tests carried out include compressive comminution tests on particle-bed with narrow-size feed, and the locked-cycle comminution test on particle-bed with broad-size feed, which was then compared to a corresponding locked-cycle test of ball-mill grinding. The narrow-size feed is made up of particles in the size range 2.36~3.35 mm, whereas the broad-size feed of particles in the size range 0~3.35 mm. The liberation analysis for copper-mineral in the comminution products was accomplished using BPMA system – an automatic mineral liberation analyzer developed by BGRIMM. The influences of the stressing intensity and the method of comminution on the copper mineral liberation are discussed in terms of product size distribution, copper-metal deportation among size fractions, distribution of copper mineral among particle-size and particle-grade classes, degree of mineral liberation in size class as well as degree of mineral liberation overall.INTRODUCTION Traditionally, comminution process commonly applied in mineral processing is a flowsheet consisting of crushing of crude ore with conventional crushers, followed by grinding of the crushed ore in tumbling mills. In last decades, the energy-efficient HPGR (high-pressure grinding rolls) has found its application in mineral processing, mostly as tertiary or quaternary crusher to generate a fine-crushed product either as feed to subsequent grinding or as feed to a pre-beneficiation process before further grinding. Compared with the process of conventional crushing followed by grinding in ball mill, this mode of HPGR-application can achieve energy saving to some extent by reducing particle size of the feed to ball milling, and by reducing amount of the feed to ball milling if a significant portion of tailings in relatively coarse particle-size range can be discarded at the pre-beneficiation stage. In recent years, the approaches of letting HPGR take more comminution work from ball mill by applying it in semi-finish grinding mode or even finish grinding mode have been discussed (Burchardt, 2014). Although HPGR finish-grinding has been successfully applied in the cement industry for grinding of cement clinker and raw materials, this mode of HPGR application has yet rarely been implemented in mineral processing, despite the advantage of more energy-saving and other potential benefits such as preferential breakage, internal damage of particles and enhanced mineral liberation which may lead to a better downstream processing performance. The reasons for the retardation of the progress of this kind of HPGR-application in the mineral industry lies not only in that a finish-grinding with HPGR has to be operated in dry condition whereas most of ore-beneficiation processes like flotation are operated in wet condition, but also in that there are large variety of ore materials with various complexity of processing technology, which need to be addressed on a case-by-case basis with a lot of test work, in order to evaluate the potential advantages or disadvantages of this application."

A sulfide ion selective electrode was used to control sulfidiser addition in the flotation testing of a synthetic and a naturally occurring ore containing malachite in order to compare the behaviour of sodium sulfide and calcium polysulfide. Both slug and controlled potential sulfidisation methods of addition were used. Under defined optimum CPS conditions, calcium polysulfide was a more effective sulfidising agent than sodium sulfide on the basis of both capital and operating costs. Surface and solution studies were used to compare the mechanism of each sulfidiser. For calcium polysulfide, XPS showed that polysulfide ions are adsorbed, whereas for sodium sulfide it is the hydrosulfide ions that are adsorbed on the mineral surface. For calcium polysulfide, the CuSx layer was believed to form on the malachite surface, which promoted the flotation of the malachite, by xanthate. Studies of surface morphology of the sulfidised malachite showed that a fairly uniform sulfidised layer is formed with both reagents. The use of sodium sulfide resulted in a thinner initial sulfidised layer compared to polysulfide at equivalent initial sulfur concentration.

Tars paper is intended only to give a preliminary account of experiments made, and conclusions reached, concerning the treatment of certain refractory low-grade gold-ores, the profitable reduction of which may furnish a useful guide to the solution of similar mining and metallurgical problems, not only in the gold-bearing belt of the Southern United States, but perhaps in other regions also. It must be regarded as simply a ?report of progress," preceding a more elaborate and conclusive report of regular practice. The mines of the Hillabee Gold Mining Co. are located upon what is generally known locally as Hog Mountain, on the northern edge of Tallapoosa county, Ala., about 15 miles from Goodwater and 14 miles from Alexander City, stations on the Central of Georgia Railway. Gold has been known since 1839 to exist on this property, where it was discovered in that year by a man named Johnston. The property was worked for placer-gold by the old miners, and there are now the remains of four attempts to operate it by stamp-mill and plate-amalgamation. The present owners purchased it in 1896, and since that time they have experimented at frequent intervals, in order to devise a process that would satisfactorily recover the gold. In 1903 regular operations were begun. Geologically, the mountain consists of an intrusion of what has been pronounced true granite in altered sedimentary slates. The cooling of the granite produced shrinkage-cracks, which have become veins. There is considerable question as to the period of the slate formation; but it is undoubtedly, in my opinion, of Carboniferous age. Erosion corrosion of 12 alloys in phosphoric acid waste water was studied by the Bureau of Mines. Tests were conducted on oblate spheroids or cylindrical specimens in 12-and 60-cm-diam ball mills by grinding phosphate rock in gypsum pond water with a starting pH of 1.6. For comparison, tests were conducted while grinding phosphate rock in plain water. Static corrosion tests in gypsum pond water also were conducted. For all alloys, the wear by erosion-corrosion (milling with gypsum pond water) was greater than the sum of erosion (milling with water) plus static corrosion. Erosion-corrosion wear was about 1,500 to 3,000 mpy for the alloyed white cast irons, 1,000 to 1,400 mpy for commercial steel ball material and type 316 stainless steel, and 600 to 900 mpy for nickel-base alloys and a high-manganese, nitrided stainless steel. Alloy costs per unit of phosphate rock 'processed favor a low-alloy, high-carbon steel or a high-manganese, nitrided stainless steel.

In 1961. American Smelting and Refining Company was conducting exploration for lead in southeastern Missouri using several geophysical methods. Electrical methods were used in almost every hole drilled during this period. These methods met with only limited success, with one exception. This paper deals with that exception: An Electrical Potential Method used at a single hole to indicate direction to better mineralization. This method was notably successful in the program.

The results of development of new collecting reagents selectively interacting with the metals of platinum group (MPG) are presented. A new approach to the concentration of the platinum minerals from the fine grade platinum containing products with the use of cloud point polymers for the first time proposed for this purpose is discussed. An original method for the investigation of complexing reagents with the platinum under flotation conditions developed by authors is described. The influence of the complexing reagents on the xanthate adsorption and on the electrochemical properties of the platinum arsenide surface (sperrylite) as well with the interaction mechanism between the reagent and metallic platinum were investigated by means of the modern physical and physicochemical methods of the solid and fluid phase studies. The results of tests of some complexing reagents with the rich copper-nickel ore in the cycle of nickel-pyrrhotite flotation are given. The data obtained makes it possible to mark the complexing reagent containing phosphine group as the most effective additional collector for MPG. Cloud point polymers containing thioamide, aminosulphide, and phosphine functional groups were examined. It is shown that all the reagents tested increase the platinum and palladium extraction to the nickel-pyrrhotite concentrate without quality loss. Platinum containing particles flocculate selectively.

"During the last decades investigators of many countries shows an increased interest to alloys which are characterized by miscibility gap in a liquid state. It is connected with essential possibilities of control of structurization in such alloys because of the melt at certain temperature parameters is · emulsion with disperse phase inclusions. These ensure essential influence ·on structurizations.The certain inclusions can play a role of lubrication ensuring ""wearless"" process. The sizes of inclusions of this phase can be rather large proportional to sizes of strengthening phase (up to 1000 nm). Other inclusions ensure process of strengthening of a main material. In this case requests to a dispersibility character of distribution and structure of such inclusions are much higher.The multicomponent alloys of system of copper - (Fe - Cr - C)- alloy concern to the number of advanced compositions. The copper alloys with structure of a type of a ""frozen emulsion"" in which strengthening phase· is a chromium pig-iron are characterized by high thermal stability in the extreme operating conditions. The mechanism of inclusions forming is emulsifying of a melt in miscibility gap at temperatures close to temperature of binodal under superimposition of external effects.The main complexity of producing of ware from such alloys is .a providing in their structure of necessary dispersible inclusions uniformly distributed all over the volume. Thanks to a selective action of electromagnetic fields on liquid phases with various electroconductivity relative velocity of phases is created and is regulated the ratio of their ""apparent"" specific gravity is changed. Excitation of pulsing force effects with the certain frequency on interphase surface allow actively to influence on process of a dispersion of a liquid metal medium."

The challenges facing the iron and steel industry on a global scale include depletion of resources, excessive energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The demand for iron products in Zimbabwe is increasing due to massive infrastructural development like the expansion and improvement of mines, transportation systems and water reticulation systems. In Zimbabwe, cast iron is mainly produced from recycling scrap metals. However, there is currently a shortage of scrap, which has resulted in the vandalism of state-owned properties such as bus terminals and railway wagons and lines. Nevertheless, Zimbabwe is rich in limonite ores, which are idle, and it is the aim of this research that this ore be effectively used to produce feed for the blast furnace. The Blast furnace is still the dominant route for producing cast iron where sintering and coking processes are the main routes for preparing the Blast furnace feed. Sintering limonite ore fines produce a product of poor grade because of the high value of loss on ignition that has a negative impact on Blast furnace efficiency. Furthermore, the sinter plant and the coke making plant are a source of huge environmental pollutants. Since low-grade Zimbabwean coal fines are also available in abundance, they were used in the preparation of the composite materials ensuring maximum utilisation of this resource. Results showed that the limonite ore-carbon composite pellets sample with the binary basicity ratio (CaO/SiO2) of about 0.27 and coal addition of 2.5 wt per cent achieved above the minimum physical quality requirements for pellet of drop number of at least 4, a dry compression strength greater than 2.2 kg/pellet and an indurated compression strength greater than 250 kg/pellet. Limestone was used as the binder avoiding the addition of more impurities from bentonite since the limonite ore has a high SiO2 content of about 8.78 wt per cent.

This Bureau of Mines publication reviews characteristics, manufacture, and uses of natural and synthetic iron oxide pigments. Supply and demand trends within the domestic industry and in foreign trade are presented for 1955 through 1976. Iron oxides are expected to continue in demand for traditional uses, and if anything, to be favorably affected by technological developments. Imports have been significant in relation to domestic production, most notably for synthetic oxides from West Germany and Canada.

I did not make studies about this parameter but I can say that some researchers recommend using low C3A cements to repair masonry mortar in order to reduce a possible combination with sulphate that can be present in old mortars.

During 1916 and 1917, the E. J. Longyear Co. of Minneapolis, Minn., carried out a campaign of exploration for nickel-copper ore in the Sudbury District of Ontario. The work was initiated by W. E. Smith, a resident of Sudbury, who called the attention of W. J. Mead, Chief geologist. The E. J. Longyear Co., to the fact that explorable lands in the Sudbury District were still available. Five diamond drills were employed, and holes were drilled in the townships of Levack, Trill, Denison, Blezard; Garson, Falconbridge and MacLennan. The general map of the District, Fig. 1, shows the distribution of the lands chosen. As a result of this exploration, a large body of nickel and copper ore has been found in the western part of the Township of Falconbridge. This property lies in the eastern part of the Sudbury District, east of the Garson mine.

Grinding and flotation operations deliver better-optimized performance when they are monitored and controlled in terms of the minerals they process rather than as elemental assays that we usually refer to. Mesh of grind (MoG), liberation, floatability, grade and recovery etc. are more directly related with the minerals and their characteristics rather than the elemental assays. Hence, online analyzers only provide the status for the grade and recovery of metals and not the direction for the enhanced performance. Central Research and Development Laboratory (CRDL) and Rampura Agucha Mine (RAM) mill section of Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) jointly undertook various survey campaigns in the grinding and flotation process streams. Grinding circuit surveys involved systematic collection of representative samples from different grinding circuit streams under stabilized conditions for monitoring particle size and process mineralogy details across individual grinding circuit. Flotation survey campaigns included study of fort-nightly / monthly composites of un-ground flotation feed, lead concentrate, lead tailing, zinc concentrate and final tailing samples for size distribution details in the 150 ? 38 micron range, chemical analysis and mineral characterization through optical microscope. This work details the investigations results and their implications on beneficiation performance. Grinding circuit survey campaigns supported the task for modifying the originally installed configuration of hydrocyclones, to limit recovery losses due to excess grinding of soft galena and related silver minerals. Flotation plant surveys helped in adjusting flotation circuit process parameters to reduce loss of liberated and floatable galena and sphalerite grains into their respective tailing streams. The traditional Ti6Al4V alloys were obtained by the smelting reduction of V-Ti bearing beach placer by rotary hearth furnace and aluminothermic reaction in laboratory. First, it gets he lp from combined rotary hearth furnace and grinding magnetic separation process to prepare titanium slag containing vanadium. In this study, a neural network model was used. The comparisons between experiment results and neural network simulation results show that genetic algorithm (GA)-based on back propagation (BP) method can predict the degree of reduction and separation of iron and slag with higher prediction accuracy. Then by aluminothermic reaction process, the optimized process parameters for Ti-V-Al alloys were searched. Al can deoxidize metal V and Ti from the metal oxides of artificial rutile containing vanadium. Finally, traditional Ti6Al4V alloy can be obtained by remelt and adjust the constituents.

Based on the mineralogical characteristics and mineral processing techniques required, gold ores can be classified into 12 types, including gold placers, quartz vein-lode ores, oxidized ores, silver-rich ores, iron oxide copper gold ores, porphyry copper gold ores, iron sulphide ores, arsenic sulphide ores, antimony sulphide ores, bismuth sulphide ores, telluride ores and carbonaceous sulphide ores. The bulk mineralogy and gold deportment of each ore type is different and may have a significant impact on ore processing and metal extraction. This paper summarizes the bulk mineralogy and gold deportment in some major types of gold ores and discusses the potential impact of gold deportment on gold metallurgy.

Growing demand for valuable battery materials and environmental issues from battery disposal make the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) essential. Specifically, the green approaches using organic reagents have garnered many attentions for battery recycling. In this study, a synergetic organic leaching system using methanesulfonic acid (MSA) of strong organic acid and citric acid (CA) with good chelating ability was investigated to extract valuable metals from LiCoO2. Hydrogen peroxide was used as a reducing agent to enhance leaching kinetics. Cobalt extraction of 98% and lithium extraction of 97 % were achieved in the optimized condition; 2.4M MSA, 1.6M CA, 1.0 vol% H2O2, S/L ratio 80 g/L, 85 °C, and 1 h. The optimal leaching condition of the MSA-CA mixed leaching system exhibited good applicability to various cathode scraps, such as LiCoO2, LiNixMnyCo1- x-yO2, and LiNixCoyO2. The dissolved Co and Li ions in the MSA-CA leachate were selectively recovered with high recovery efficiencies of 99 % and 97 % as Co3O4 and Li3PO4, respectively. The recovered Co3O4 and Li3PO4 were utilized to regenerate cathode materials. LiCoO2 and LiFePO4 were also synthesized through a solid-state reaction and hydrothermal method. The recycling process based on the MSA-CA-H2O2 synergetic leaching system was proposed, and it might be applied as a green and economical organic leaching system for the recycling of various types of spent LIBs.

The use of Diesel fuel as a source of power is continuing to increase in the United States. The latest available figures indicate that refineries are delivering in excess of 10,000,000 barrels of this type of fuel per month. Factors contributing to this increased consumption are conversions by a number of railroads from steam to Diesel locomotives and the growing use of Diesel engines in buses, trucks, tractors, earth-moving machinery, water craft, and stationary power plants. The increasing importance of Diesel fuel has led to a need for more information on its characteristics, particularly on the grades and qualities currently being marketed. To supply this information the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, under a cooperative agreement, are conducting annual surveys of Diesel fuels produced in refineries in this country. Samples of Diesel fuel were analyzed by the manufacturers in accordance with instructions from the Motor-Fuels Survey Panel of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute. Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines where the data were studied am compiled as shown in the tables of this report. The first survey was made in 1950 and was published as a Bureau of Mines report. The present report shows the results of a similar survey made during 1951.

THE "miracle of production." which was such an essential element in winning the European war, was nowhere more in evidence than in our Western States. In shipbuilding alone the Pacific Coast States -et a mark never before equaled, and in production of war goods of many kinds, both Rocky Mountain and Coast States accomplished more than their proportionate share if measured by population standards. This was only possible because of the building of immense new plants of many types, largely financed with Government money. Their operation has built up payrolls in the West and brought a measure of prosperity which Westerners are naturally anxious to have made permanent. A widespread doubt obtains, however, throughout the nation and even in the Western States themselves, as to whether, and if so to what extent, this may prove possible. The question has been raised as to whether the national treasury has not been raided to stock the Western ranges with a voracious breed of white elephant .

The present work reports a study of production of thorium concentrate from Egyptian monazite by decomposition of ammonium carbonate solutions containing ammonium thorium and uranyl carbonate complexes. These solutions were obtained from the processing of monazite by alkaline leaching in ball-mill autoclaves, followed by selective separation of thorium and uranium from lanthanides by autoclave leaching of the hydroxide cake obtained with ammonium carbonate - bicarbonate solutions. The separation of thorium and uranium in the form of thorium concentrate from their carbonate complexes was achieved by different methods, including neutralization of solutions at pH = 6.7 by acid, addition of alkali at pH = 11.5, heating of solution at 100°C and processing of carbonate solution with steam under pressure in steel autoclaves. Processing of solutions of thorium and uranyl carbonate complexes in an autoclave with steam causes their decomposition. Complete recovery of thorium 99.8% and 98.4% uranium recovery in thorium concentrate was attained at 120°C and steam pressure 2 atm, within 10 min. Meanwhile, the recovery of lanthanides was low and did not exceed 1.1%. The thorium concentrate produced contains 67.82% Th, 4.6% U and 3.14% REE. All methods achieve complete separation of thorium and uranium from their carbonate solutions, but the first two methods are unfavourable for the industry due to the high cost of reagents and their inability to regenerate the ammonium carbonate. The decomposition of ammonium thorium and uranyl carbonate complexes with steam under pressure is recommended for industrial application for its simplicity and the ability to regenerate the ammonium carbonate.
