"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThe Brewer mine, near Jefferson, Chesterfield County, S.C., was originally operated as a gold mines as late as 1890 this mine was reported to have been one of the large gold producers in the southeast,Occurrence of topaz on the Brewer property was not reported until 1935, when it was discovered by Pardee and Parks. 3/ of the Federal Geological Survey while they were investigating gold deposits in the Piedmont province.During the 1940's the Chemical Engineering Branch of the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Electrotecbnical Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines at Norris, Tenn., investigated topaz from the Brewer mine to determine the possibilities of its use as mullite and for the production of calcium fluoride.From July 1950 through. April 1951 the Bureau of Mines conducted a diamond-drilling project at the Brewer mine to determine the grade and extent of the topaz deposits. Ten diamond-drill holes, totaling 2,344 feet, were completed, and 231 analyses of core samples were made during the course of the project.This report presents factual data relating only to the diamond-drilling project, The placer deposits on the Brewer property were previously investigated by the Federal Geological Survey 4/."

Almost every oil well drilled into limestone formations in Kansas is treated with hydrochloric (muriatic) acid upon completion: to increase potential capacity of well and thereby increase its "daily allowable" production; to shorten time required to produce recoverable oil; and to increase quantity of oil recovered ultimately from reservoir. Acid treating marked a forward step in the producing fields of Kansas; in fact, many old limestone fields that almost had reached their economic producing limit were "rejuvenated" with acid and their capacities to produce increased several times. It also caused a marked increase in the ultimate oil recovery of some old and nearly depleted fields of Kansas. The effect of the acid was due to the cleaning-out action by the acid at the face of the limestone, the enlargement of the small drainage channels, and the apparent penetration of the acid to previously undrained porous and saturated strata. Studies of the effects of acid were made in the Fairport field, three groups of wells in the El Dorado field and the Shutts field. Estimation of increased recoveries resulting from acid in these fields and groups of wells ranged from 1000 to 2400 bbI. per acre. Limestone structures that had been tested by drilling and found noncommercial were later completed as commerical oil-producing formations through the use of acid. The Kansas City formation, Valley Center field of Kansas, is an example. Increased oil production and revenue from the old fields justified the reconditioning of equipment, which in most cases had become in poor mechanical condition. The first treatment with hydrochloric acid of an oil well in Kansas was in October 1932, and by the end of 1937 almost 6000 wells had been treated. Many wells were treated more than once and the total number of treatments exceeded 8000 by the end of 1937. Approximately 12 3/4 million gallons of acid was required for these treatments. A guide to the development and utilization of an interactive mine-power-system fault program (Z-bus by algorithm) is presented. Theoretical foundations, as well as implementation considerations are discussed with respect to the mine-power system. Alternative Kron reduction techniques are presented along with a triangular-storage method for storage conservation. Program capabilities include the analysis of balanced and unbalanced (line-to-line, line-to-ground, and line-to-line-to-ground) fault situations using symmetrical component theory. To account for phase shifting in delta-wye transformers and zero-sequence network constructions, transformer and load configurations are specified by the user. The positive-and zero-sequence connections needed for network conformity are automatically constructed with the required impedances.

Hindered-settling column process has been used for the separation of mineral particles for many years. In this study, a model based on DEM (Discrete Element Method) was used to simulate the movements of particles in a settling column separation process. DEM model is capable of describing the motion of particles and calculating the impact forces between particle and particle, and particle and wall contact under various operating conditions. Drag force, rotation induced Magnus lift force, contact force and the gravitational force acting on individual particles were considered for establishing the mathematic models. The overall motion of the particles in water is satisfactorily simulated by the DEM, and the result shows good agreements with the result of lap-scale experiment.

"The Norita deposit is an Archean volcanogenic-exhalative Fe-Zn- Cu sulphide accumulation of the distal type, consisting of six overlapping stratiform massive sulphide lenses, interbedded with exhalative cherts and thin pillow basalt flows, which formed down-topographic-slope from a mineralized hydrothermal discharge zone in the Norita rhyolite. The sulphide lenses are of two main types: channel-fill deposits such as the Main Zone and Main Zone West, composed of intricately layered pyrite-sphalerite-chert, which formed by the dynamic down-slope transport and re-deposition of sulphide exhaled from the vent zone; and stratiform lenses such as the Cu-rich A-Zone and A-Zone West, which formed even farther down-slope, in basinal depressions flanking the dome. Although rotated into a vertical position by folding, the sulphide lenses are otherwise essentially undeformed and contain a wide range of preserved primary sedimentary structures.Of prime importance in exploration has been the recognition that the formation of the distal sulphide lenses was controlled by submarine paleotopography, and that it is possible to approximate the sea-floor paleotopography using variations in the thickness and strike extent of the interbedded volcanic rocks. This has proved to be a major and successful exploration tool in the search for further sulphide mineralization in the mine, and offers prospects for use elsewhere in the district."

The study involved two projects that will produce copper concentrate and may have their operations integrated. Transport by trucks, conveyor belt, and the equipment called RopeCon were evaluated as options for the ore transport between the sites. A rainforest stretch, that Vale S.A. demands to preserve, is situated between the projects. It was suggested to further review RopeCon because it presents minimal interactions with the environment. To design the preliminary system layout, a research was done on the rainforest cover height data, but the information found was scarce and imprecise. For preserving the local forest, the use of this data would conduct to the oversizing of RopeCon towers and, consequently, overestimation of its costs. For the acquisition of reliable information, a method was developed using local data acquired through airborne laser survey. The volume between the digital surface and terrain models was calculated to generate a surface representing the forest cover height. It was revealed, by plotting the points obtained from this surface, that 85% of the vegetation is below 25 m. This height is suggested to review the preliminary project with a more accurate design of the equipment towers, thus reducing its costs estimates. The method permits the precise location of the large trees, making easier to find a pathway, for linear-shaped facilities, that would minimize the creation of vegetation-free zones as a measure to protect equipments against falling trees and forest fires. Conventional methods of drill hole site selection are reviewed briefly. Two approaches using geostatistics are then discussed, both of which have been shown to yield improved results. Finally, a branch and bound algorithm is described which will select the best locations for drilling from a user specified number of possible drill sites. Two options are discussed. First, the user can specify a maximum drilling investment or a maximum number of drill holes and the program will select the locations yielding the minimum estimation variance. This amounts to getting the most for a given investment. Alternatively, a maximum tolerable estimation variance can be specified and the program will select the number and location of the drill holes to obtain the desired information at a minimum cost. Another benefit of the approach is the quantification of the tradeoffs between investment and information obtained.

An ore microscopic and geochemical study of the nickel-cobalt occurrence in the Southeast Missouri Mining District has revealed several significant relationships. Siegenite [(Ni,Co)3S4] is the dominant nickel-cobalt sulfide in the ores, however, several other members of the thiospi¬nel group (AB2S4) occur: carrollite (CuCo2S4), nickelean carrollite [(Co,Ni,Cu)3S4], fletcherite [Cu(Ni,Co)2S4] and polydymite (Ni 3S4). In addition, bravoite [(Ni,Fe)S2], vaesite (NiS2), millerite (NiS) and gersdorffite (NiAsS) are present. Thiospinel composition varies dramatically within the district. Paragenetic studies have shown that the stratigraphically lowest thiospinels are the most cobalt-copper-rich. A detailed ore microscopic study of the AMAX Lead Company Buick mine has also shown significant changes in mineralogical association, texture and grain size of the siegenite along the north-south strike of the major ore bodies. Siegenite commonly replaces and veins chalcopyrite and is subsequently replaced by sphalerite. Less commonly, siegenite and chalcopyrite are observed to form linear replacements along sphalerite grain boundaries. The grain size of the siegenite varies markedly, but in a predictable north-south pattern that is consistent with a genetic model formulated from geo-chemical data. The compositional as well as textural trends displayed by the thiospinel mineralization could be exploited to optimize recovery of any or all thiospinels of economic interest.

THE CHAIRMAN (ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass.).-Any information likely to throw light on the constitution and proper treatment of high-speed steel in order to obtain maximum results, should surely he welcomed. All users of high-speed steel, I believe, will agree with the authors that, in order to obtain satisfactory results, it is not sufficient to heat all brands of high-speed steel to one and the same temperature; apparently very slight differences of chemical composition seem to call for marked differences in temperature. I think that all of us agree that a properly treated piece of high-speed steel should have a fine austenitic or polyhedral structure and that an appreciable quantity of free carbide may be present in the case of very high tungsten steels. What we seem to lack is a satisfactory method, quick and reliable, of ascertaining when the proper structure has been obtained. I think Mr. Bellis' paper is a step in the right direction. To the untrained eye, however, it is not an easy matter to select from some of his photomicrographs the one representing the best structure; for instance, in the case of steel A, we wonder why temperatures of 2,250 and 2,300 do not yield the same results, seeing that both structures are apparently alike, and the same might apply to some of the other samples. I have no doubt, however, that the experienced observer is capable of detecting structural differences that are not made plain here and by which he is able to select the proper quenching temperature. J.-On page 68 the authors say that the use of a barium chloride bath to eliminate this difficulty has the disadvantage that the surface of the tool becomes decarbonized." I would like to ask whether they actually found that the surface was decarbonized, or whether they base this conclusion on softening alone? A. E. BELLIS, Springfield, Mass.-No, we have never demonstrated that it was a decarbonization, it is just the softening of the steel. The addition of ferrocyanide to the ferrochloride bath has been suggested. I think that is not altogether satisfactory, because the ferrocyanide bath changes composition very rapidly at these high temperatures, and it would be just a question of luck whether or not it had too much or too little ferrocyanide in the bath giving equilibrium with the carbon content.

The use of Alyavdin's equation Y(x,t) = 1-e(-bt) for describing the effect of grinding time on size distribution is discussed. The equation transforms into linear form by expressing it as log-log reciprocal (1 - Y) versus log t. For plotting, specially divided grids are available; Rosin-Rammler or Weibull charts may be used. The data of Herbst and Fuerstenau are especially useful for illustrating the Alyavdin-Weibull chart in two applications: (1) presenting data (which are relatively unaffected by experimental scatter) and comparing them with theoretical predictions, and (2) as a test for the zero-order kinetics production hypothesis. The chart based on the Alyavdin-Weibull equation is suggested as a useful aid in the analysis of kinetic data (/ versus f), though not as a procedure in its own right. Proposed applications are (1) displaying data with excellent clarity, since it avoids the kind of congestion inherent in some other plotting methods, and (2) as a test for assumed kinetic relationships. Sometimes, equation 1 describes the data quite closely, and in these cases the parameter values appear to be related to certain operating conditions.

"More than a dozen AEM systems are currently being used in the routine exploration for massive sulphides. The systems differ from one another in minor respects, but fall into four main categories: rigid-coupled in-phase/quadrature systems; towed-bird, single-component systems; differential systems; and passive systems.Although field tests are important in demonstrating the performance characteristics of the AEM/airframe assembly (noise-levels, coupling effects, etc.), more meaningful evaluations can be made through physical or computer modelling. The latter approach has been used to compare the response of twelve AEM systems to both vertical and horizontal sheets, simulating a large orebody and a con-ductive overburden respectively. The effects of height changes are also studied.The results demonstrate that each AEM system has its own particular advantages and disadvantages. The relative importance of these is a matter for the geophysicist to judge, on the basis of specific geological and environ-mental information. Data currently available on AEM systems are adequate to permit an objective evaluation of the systems for a particular exploration program."

"Caterpillar has developed the Cat GH800B longwall plow system, designed for mining very low coal seams at high rates. Building on the attributes of the proven GH1600 plow system, the Caterpillar longwall team in Lünen, Germany, worked with the German Ibbenbüren Mine to design and construct a system for mining an anthracite seam averaging only 0.85 m (33.5 in.) thick. The result is the GH800B plow and associated longwall system, which is now operating in the Ibbenbüren Mine - where the seam does not exceed 1 m (39 in.) in height.The Cat GH800 plow, with an installed power of 2 x 400 kW, has been the plow of choice for seam heights from 0.9 to 2 m (35 to 78 in.), regardless of seam inclination or coal hardness. But the lower the coal seam, the more difficult the extraction process. Flexibility, reliability, efficiency and serviceability of the whole system had to be refined for maximum productivity in such a minimal height, but several key modifications led to success.The armored face conveyor (AFC) modifications for the GH800B plow system include PF4 plow line pans with a replaceable top trough and a new plow guide made of a one-piece casting to provide extra strength and durability while being lower in height than the previous welded version. External dogbone connectors between the line pans and a strong and flexible relay bar between the AFC and the roof supports (shields) further adapt the conveyor for very low seam operation. To increase coal throughput, the engineering team widened the conveyor crosssection with extended side plates."

THE data of Chaudron,1 Tonosaki,2 and Collins³ on the thermodynamic properties of MOO, disagree widely. These authors, by using essentially similar methods, studied the following reaction: 1/2MoO2(s) + H2(g) == i/2Mo(s) + Ph,o H2O(g),K = —----- [1] Ph2 Tonosaki used a vacuum system consisting of a furnace containing MOO, and a water saturator whose temperature was kept at 25 °C with a thermostat. After repeated evacuation, hydrogen was admitted slowly into the system. The experiments were based upon the fact that at a constant furnace temperature and constant partial pressure of water, the total pressure of gas mixture over MOO? + Mo is constant. Any attempt to vary the pressure by external forces would vary only the amounts of MoO2, and Mo, after which the pressure should return to the equilibrium value in accordance with the equilibrium constant of reaction 1. The actual value of K was determined from the total equilibrium pressure (sum of Ph2o + Ph2) at each temperature. The total pressure of gas was varied within the range of 80.2 to 125.4 mm Hg, within a temperature range of 645" to 823 °C. The results were summarized as log K = 0.9413 — 1444.6/T for reaction 1. The ratio of H2O/H2 was considered to be uniform in spite of the presence of a thermal gradient across the static gas phase. It was shown by Rosenqvist and Cox,' however, that in somewhat similar circumstances the error resulting from thermal diffusion may be large. Collins³ improved Tonosaki's method by attempting to avoid thermal diffusion errors. His equilibrium data were obtained at 700°, 800°, and 900° C, and the result for reaction 1 was expressed as log K = 1.258 — 1822/T. The purpose of this investigation was to study reaction 1, avoiding the thermal diffusion errors, and to obtain equilibrium data in a considerably wide temperature range for the reliable extrapolation of the resulting thermodynamic functions. Experimental Procedure The diagram of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Tank hydrogen was passed through a tube containing platinized asbestos at 425 °C in order to convert a trace of oxygen into water vapor. The flow rate was carefully controlled with a capillary-type flow-meter B and a bubbling column D. The gas was then presaturated sufficiently at P and led into a condenser system immersed in a thermostat, controlled to within ±0.002C. The temperature of the thermostat was measured with a thermometer calibrated against a certified standard. The temperature of P was adjusted to avoid the condensation of unduly large amounts of water as judged from the rate of flow out of the capillary tube M. Argon was purified by passing it through magnesium chips kept at 630°C. After passing through the flowmeter B', it was mixed with moist hydrogen emerging from the thermostat. The resulting gas mixture was then led into the hot zone of the furnace through the heated glass tubing and the silica tube S, thus insuring the same ratio of PII2o/Ph2 from the condenser to the reaction chamber, thus avoiding thermal diffusion. The entire gas system was of all-glass construction, except at the magnesium train. The furnace comprised a glazed alumina tube over which a 15-in. platinum coil was wound. The lower end of the alumina tube was tightly closed with a brass bottom and a silicone rubber gasket, and the upper end with two glass disks, each with a hole of 1/16 in. in diameter, through which the gas mixture escaped into the atmosphere. A back-up coil of kanthal wire facilitated the temperature control of the furnace. A coil of annealed molybdenum strip of 99.99 pct purity, 0.005 in. thick and 0.050 in. wide, and weighing 17 g was hung in the furnace with a 0.010-in. platinum wire attached to one end of a sensitive analytical balance. The temperature of the furnace was measured with a Pt-Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple checked against a standard. The experimental procedure consisted of heating the gas purification trains, adjusting the gas flow rates, attaining a constant thermostatic temperature, flushing the entire system for 2 hr while heating the furnace to well above the expected equilibrium temperature and then cooling it at a rate of 0.3°C per min during which time the change in the weight of molybdenum was observed on the balance. For a given thermostatic temperature, i.e., a constant Prr,o/Px,, molybdenum oxidized upon cooling slightly below the equilibrium temperature. The procedure was then repeated by heating the furnace and thus reaching a temperature slightly above the equilibrium value. The average of the two temperatures, differing by 2" to 3"C, was considered to be the true equilibrium temperature. RECENTLY completed experimental work, carried out in the department of geology at the University of Wisconsin, aiming at a prevention of silicosis in industry has been reported in the American Mineralogist. A vast amount of work on silicosis has been reported in the literature, the clinical aspects having been especially well covered. A host of critical observations have been made on the variations in the nature of the silicosis problem in different environments, and a great deal of valuable experimental work has helped to clarify these observations. At present a greater amount of information of a critical sort is available than ever before, which affords a more sound basis for interpretive thought. It has been observed in industry that essentially pure silica dust gives rise to silicosis. Jones would modify this conclusion to place the responsibility on sericite, a silicate mineral present in the siliceous dust. Material such as granite dust, which carries a high free silica (quartz) content, is also a silicosis hazard. But sericite, too, is usually present in granite. In general it is widely believed that silicosis is caused by the presence in the lung of silicic acid regardless of the source. This view is adopted here.

A Bureau of Mines surface resistivity method has been used to determine the joint strike and coefficient of anisotropy of jointed , nearsurface formations at five study areas . The field studies demonstrate the use of rotated , or azimuthal , Wenner-Lee arrays for determining the strike of predominant joint sets . The results of the field studies include the following : in a formation having a predominant , vertical joint set , the maximum value of the apparent resistivity ( pa ) occurs in the same direction ( azimuth ) as the joint strike ; the polar coordinate graph of pa for such a formation is approximately elliptical ; the coefficient of anisotropy ( ^ ) can be calculated from the field data , and values of λ for jointed formations are in the same range of values reported for layered formations ; values of λ are higher at mined sites than at unmined sites . The azimuthal resistivity method and horizontal profiling were used at a site in Pennsylvania to delineate a zone of intensely jointed and fractured bedrock that provided a flow path from a surface stream to a mine . Analysis of the data has been based on a simple model of a jointed formation having a single joint set ; the success achieved to date indicates the need for a more complex model and additional field data .

COAL MINING, with its some 15,000 employees, is directly responsible for the livelihood of one-fifth of the population of the Province of Nova Scotia and indirectly so for that of possibly another fifth. Deposits of coal are known and worked in four counties of the Province, from which is being produced yearly tonnages as noted below: Cumberland County 750,000 tons Piccou County 400,000 tons Inverness County 100,000 tons Cape Breton County 5,250,000 tons TOTAL FOR NOVA SCOTIA 6,500,000 tons Production in Cape Breton county is entirely from the one source, the Sydney coalfield, and not only is this field the most important in respect to output, as is disclosed above, but it is also the largest presently known deposit in the Province and holds the greatest tonnage yet in reserve for future mining. In the light of the above more or less generally known facts, it is trite to remark on the importance of the Sydney coalfield in the internal economy of the Province. On the other hand, not nearly as well-known nor as frankly recognized is its significance in the national life of Canada, for from this field is produced not only 80 per cent of the Nova Scotia coal but over 40 per cent of all coal mined in the Dominion. Another noteworthy comparison can be made from the fact that the Sydney field contributes 22 per cent of all the bituminous coal consumed in Canada, the remainder being made up of 7 per cent mined elsewhere in Nova Scotia, 27 per cent from other parts of Canada (British Columbia and Alberta, principally), while the remaining 44 per cent is imported, practically wholly, from the United States of America.

The studies carried out by the Russian researchers and those carried out jointly within some contracts with scientific organizations and companies of other countries, show that the electric pulse disintegration of materials (ED), proposed and investigated in detail in Russia (Kalyatsky, et al, 1980; Usov et al, 1987; Semkin et al, 1995; Usov and Tsukerman, 2000; Kurets et al, 2002) has been widely recognized and developed abroad (Andres, 1995; Inoue et al, 2000; Biela et al, 2008). The Russian and international journals and the proceedings of the conferences dealing with the electric pulse disintegration pay great attention to the principal principals of selective disintegration of materials. There is no, however, any information concerning both the technical means developed to implement the technique and the assessment of their performance, which would be necessary in objective assessment of the industrial use of the technology. The results of long-term studies of the technique and technologies of electric pulse disaggregation by research institutes such as Research Institute of High Voltages (Tomsk), Kola Science Centre of RAS (Apatity), Institute "Mekhanobr"(S.Pertersburg) described. Exploratory stands and technological installations are developed to carry out pilot tests and operations under production conditions. Basic circuits and classification of technical means electric pulse disintegration of the materials are proposed, the analysis of transportation schemes and classification of the material in the disintegration apparatus are given, construction of chambers for continuous stadial disintegration of ores and materials are presented. The features and technological efficiency of electric pulse disintegration of various types of ores, and the spheres of effective use of the method have been determined. Stone coal containing vanadium is an important vanadium resource in China. Roasting and oxidation of vanadium is the foundation for extracting vanadium from stone coal. This article takes stone coal vanadium ore in Tongshan of Hubei Province as research target to conduct oxidation roasting test on it by using a self-developed low-sodium compound additive and a new optimized technology. Firstly, use potentiometric titration, X diffraction, energy spectrum and electron probe to study valence change, occurrence and phase transition of vanadium during oxidation roasting process. On this basis, primary work is done on oxidation kinetics of vanadium by exploring the steps that control reaction rate during vanadium oxidation process and determining the related dynamic parameter ? apparent activation energy. The study shows that occurrence of vanadium in stone coal of Tongshan is mainly in illite, and that the result of phase transition in roasting process is disappearance of illite containing vanadium, formation of soluble vanadate and potassium feldspar, albite. It further demonstrates that oxidation process of vanadium is step by step (V(?)? V(?)? V(?)), and its oxidation reaction is controlled by diffusion kinetics whose dynamic apparent activation energy is E1=81.19kJ.mol-1.
