THE local auditorium of a little Alabama mining town was crowded with expectant men, women and children, as the bulletin board had announced the addition of visiting entertainers to supplement the local talent and motion pictures which usually made up the program of the regular monthly safety meeting. In the audience, near the stage, sat a group of bright-faced boys in boy scout uniforms, discussing the picture just completed. As the lights flashed on a crash and scream was heard from the outside, a shrill whistle and word of command from the scoutmaster, and five of the scouts ran out of the hall, while the mine super-intendent stepped on the stage and requested everyone to keep their seats. The scouts returned, three of them carrying a limp figure in their arms, while the other two cleared the doorway and aisle of excited spectators. They marched to the stage and, placing the apparently badly-injured boy on the floor, proceeded to give an expert demonstration of first aid to the injured. The scoutmaster then explained to the audience that the whole affair had been arranged for their benefit, and invited the local first-aid men to come up on the stage to examine and criticize the boys' work. This gave an opening for several talks on the value of first-aid training and accident prevention, which is the main object of the monthly meetings. This demonstration was given by the first-aid team of Troop One, and the entertainment was provided by members of Troop One and Twenty-eight of the Bir-mingham Scout Council, organized by the writer for the purpose of promoting interest in the welfare and safety meetings in the mining villages of the State. During the past year they have visited a number of such meet-ings and presented programs similar to the one men-tioned above. However, in order to assure a good attendance, entertainment features must also be pro-vided, and the serious part of the evening program was interspersed with excellent vocal and instrumental mu-sic, dancing and novelty acrobatic acts furnished by the visiting scouts. In addition to the numerous first-aid teams of the Birmingham Council, there are hundreds of scouts scat-tered throughout the mining district whose knowledge of first aid, safety first, life-saving, personal health and public health are a constant source of protection to their community. All of these subjects are covered by merit badge pamphlets and are required of an eagle scout.

Current operating practice in a plant commissioned some five years ago to treat ferritic zinc plant residue by the "Jarosite" process is described. Major problems overcome include obtaining reliable pH measurements at 100¦C, prevention of scale build up in spent electrolyte heaters, blinding of jarosite filter cloths and the deposition of gypsum in filter presses.

In the treatment of many problems related with the optimization of a given ore dressing process, microscopic studies can provide invaluable assistance. Such studies are generally carried out through mineralogical determinations both qualitatively and quantitatively. Frequently the solution of a specific problem requires the combination of these in adequate proportions. Often the nature? of the problem poses some conditions regarding the way the microscopic determinations are made in order to yield useful information. Most publications applied to mineral beneficiation show results of ore microscopy without mentioning the methodological details involved in the determinative work and therefore it is not possible to judge their reliability and/or their relevance. As methodology must necessarily change from case to case, it is very important for the microscopist to identify first the direct and indirect mineralogical information required to solve the problem. Without such guidelines selection of methods for the qualitative and/or quantitative determinations cannot be made.

The zinc pressure leaching plant at Cominco's Trail Operations is now in its ninth year of production. The plant produces a zinc sulphate and jarosite slurry which is further processed in the calcine leaching circuit. Elemental sulphur, a by-product of the process, is sold in the North American market. During the past eight years, a number of changes have been made to the plant to remove known production bottlenecks and to improve leaching extraction. These changes have raised production rates above the initial design so that the plant currently accounts for approximately 20 percent of Trail s zinc production. These rates are expected to be increased further upon the completion of the alterations currently in progress. The knowledge gained over the operating life of this plant has allowed Cominco to plan for a possible future expansion of the zinc pressure leaching plant. If expanded, zinc pressure leaching would account for approximately 48 percent of cominco?s zinc production.

Spreadsheet software is an effective tool for simulating dynamic stochastic systems such as mineral processing plants. The two-product formula is used to show how to set up a Monte Carlo simulation in a spreadsheet template and how to calculate variances of dependent variables. The key to a reliable and realistic simulation model is to obtain unbiased estimates for all independent variables and variances in the set that defines the stochastic system. Monte Carlo simulation is also a powerful tool for optimizing sampling procedures, for applying sensitivity analysis and for designing and evaluating experiments.

High pressure grinding technology has gained further interest in various industries. So far in the mining industry, machines are in operation in diamond mines and iron ore applications. In gold and copper ore processing, test work has been conducted showing considerable operational and process benefits. Similar benefits can be expected from HPGR applications in the platinum industry due to the preferred ore breakage along grain boundaries, thus liberating the PGE particles. This paper will provide an update on the state of high pressure grinding roll technology. Developments in the design of high pressure grinding rolls, for minimized maintenance requirements and availability just as high as conventional mills, will be presented. Plant flow sheets and concepts will be discussed, which allow for a reduction of capital and operating cost in comparison to existing two-stage milling circuits.

The discovery of the auriferous cement gravel deposits in and near Deadwood Gulch, Lawrence County, Dakota Territory, in 1876, created a mining excitement, and rush to the Black Hills. Numerous ten and twenty-stamp mills were built on Deadwood Gulch; Central City and the town of Deadwood sprang into existence, and became the centres of the mining industry of the Hills. Gold quartz deposits were subsequently discovered and located on a so-called mineral belt, extending from Whitewood Creek on the south, to Deadwood Gulch on the north. A northerly group of these quartz locations was purchased in December, 1877, by parties in San Francisco, who formed a company, incorporated under the name of the Father de Smet Consolidated Gold Mining Company. This company immediately commenced the work of exploration The deposits were proved to be extensive, and easily mined, but it was found that the ore, on an average, would not yield more than $10.00 per ton* of 2000 pounds. • At this trine the cost of supplies and materials in the Hills was high. Miners' wages were $3.50 per diem, and custom mills charged $6.00 per ton. The successful working of mines on "the belt" necessitated cheap milling. "BACKGROUND Strata mechanics of three underground coal mines in central Utah were recently studied using a specialized finite element technique [1, 2, 3, 4]. The purpose of these studies was to examine relationships between mining and related seismicity. The longwall mining method was predominant, but room and pillar mining and barrier pillar mining were also used in the mines studied. In every case, high correlation between face advance and seismicity was observed. The specialized finite element technique allows for whole mine subsidence estimation at a kilometer scale and for stress concentration at a meter scale near a working face. Comparisons of observed mine subsidence with model subsidence allows for model verification and justifies detailed analysis of the evolution of stress at seam level. Yielding is expected near a longwall panel face and as the face is advanced the extent of yielding is expected to increase. The total number of element failures in a finite element mine model also increases, so a high correlation with associated seismicity, say, event count, is not so surprising. A brief review of recent coal mine studies in Utah is presented in the sequel. The procedures are given in some detail in application to trona mining. COAL MINES The analysis procedure begins with the geologic column and proceeds to specification of strata properties including elastic moduli and strengths. Joints are an integral part of the geologic model and joint set specifications include dip direction, dip, spacing, stiffness and strength. Spatial variability of strata properties in situ may be taken into account during analysis. Topography is important, especially to Utah coal mines that are developed from outcrop in regions of high relief. Mesh generation follows specification of data input. Finite element analysis is next, followed by reporting of results. In this regard, all finite element computations are based on first principles. No model “calibration” is done that involves adjusting computer input to obtain a fit to mine measurements such as subsidence profiles. Figure 1 illustrates the concept of a dual node – dual mesh finite element concept. Dual nodes are roof and floor nodes in mined areas. These nodes replace the seam. The dual mesh is a much refined mesh with displacement boundary conditions obtained from the big mesh and thus replaces the effect of mining in the region outside the dual mesh. The refined dual mesh allows for details of stress, strain and displacement near a working face of interest. Strata Properties Strata properties include elastic moduli and strengths of intact rock between joints and joint stiffness and strength for each joint set present. Both properties sets may be obtained from laboratory test data, although testing joints poses a sampling problem in the field. The statistical variability observed in laboratory test data, say, in unconfined compressive strength tests is often characterized by much variation. In fact, the coefficient of variation, ratio of standard deviation to mean, is often greater than 35 percent. When sample values are mapped back to the mine location, one may observe spatial variability as properties vary from place to place as shown in Figure 2. Spatial variability may be incorporated into a finite element analysis with probabilistic assignment of properties to elements in accordance with measured variability. The result is a more realistic model of rock in situ."

One of the important decisions in the development of new mining concentrator projects is the electric power supply for the project. Key decision factors often include the production of power on site versus purchase of power from the grid, ownership of the power supply infrastructure and the choice of generation technology. In this sense, the paper introduce a methodology that will allow the evaluation of the various alternatives to supply electric power to remote mining and mineral processing sites in a consistent and equitable manner taking into account economic and technical considerations and providing the same degree of availability and reliability. The most employed evaluation method consists of carrying out trade-off studies between the various alternatives but care should be exercised so that the alternatives analyzed offer comparable operational results.

The Bureau of Mines located and examined 292 burning coal refuse banks throughout the Nation's coal-producing regions in 1968. These coal waste fires, extending over 3,200 acres, produce poisonous, acrid gases and particulate matter that pose a threat to health and safety in the surrounding areas, damage vegetation, and cause the deterioration of nearby structures and buildings. Methods of extinguishing coal refuse fires are discussed, and an approach to eliminating future occurrences of these fires is presented.

A physical model based on similarity principles was constructed for simulating the RH degasser of CST (Companhia Siderurgica Tubarao, Vitoria, ES, Brazil) to evaluate the circulation rate of the metal which essentially defines the degree of exposure of the metal to vacuum in the chamber and thus of the refining rate, The circulation rate on the other hand will influence the decarburization rate and removal of dissolved gases like nitrogen and hence it is essential to optimise this parameter to get maximum refining efficiency with minimum refining times, thus improving the productivity of the secondary refining process. Mixing characteristics in the ladle is evaluated by pulse tracer addition using conductivity-meters located at the down leg as well as at several locations in the ladle. The influence of gas injection through nozzles in the upleg with simultaneous bottom injection of gas as well as nozzle blockage on the circulation rates were investigated. Also simulation experiments of kinetics of decarburization were carried out using CO2 adsorption-desorption process in sodium hydroxide solution as circulating fluid and the effect of, bottom gas flow rate in this case was also evaluated. The results were carried over to prototype and to optimize the process.

The building of reverberatory furnaces (Fortschaufelungsofen) where ordinary brick, fire-brick and iron are comparatively cheap, is quite a different matter from the building of such furnaces in isolated camps, where proper material is only to be obtained at high cost and with long delays. Time is always a large factor in metallurgical operations, and the metallurgist may find himself in a position where it becomes necessary to erect apparatus and have it running in less time than it would take to obtain material from outside. It is here that he must make use of makeshifts. In Mexico, one of the most important of these is the alluseful adobe. Employed from prehistoric times, it still has its sphere of application in a surprisingly large number of instances requiring an article that can be quickly and cheaply produced. It is quite possible to erect serviceable reverberatory furnaces with no other materials than adobes, stone and wood. The old Mexican smelting shaft-furnace was an example of what can be done with adobes, and the large number of ruins of this class of furnace scattered through the mining districts of Mexico are silent testimony to the genius of a people who demonstrated their capability of adapting material at hand to their needs. The present paper will describe briefly the construction of an adobe reverberatory furnace which is giving good results, can be quickly erected at a low cost, and, if properly built and handled, will last a long time. The material being simply sun-dried, it naturally follows that the construction must be quite heavy. The adobes should be evenly made, with just sufficient straw to hold them together, and not too large in size (9 in. wide, 18 in. long and 4 in. thick

A report has been published5/ describing apparatus and tests made on anthracite to determine the amount and composition of the a oxidation products when normal dry air was passed through it at temperatures varrying from 100° to 350° C. These tests showed that the amount of evolved gases and their relative proportions varied with the temperature. From these results, graphs were prepared by which the temperature at which the coal was oxidized could be estimated thus giving a possible means of detecting incipient heating.]

Economics and environmental considerations along with the increasing demand of hydrogen encourage development of novel technologies such as plasma processing of hydrocarbons and thermal cracking of natural gas. Plasma discharges, either in thermal or non-thermal regimes are expected to allow low temperature and fuel flexible on-site hydrogen generation. The main drawback of thermal plasma reformers is the high-energy consumption resulting from high-temperature operation. On the other hand, non-thermal plasma, generated by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), is able to simulate the chemical reactions employing much lower energies than those required by thermal treatment processes. The non-thermal plasma process allows for instance, a direct conversion of methane into hydrogen and carbon black with no CO2 release. The focus of this research was on the GHG-free method of H2 generation in compact non-thermal plasma reactors using low, medium and high permittivity dielectric ceramics. A stable, non-thermal plasma was generated by placing a dielectric ceramic between two electrodes with a 25 thou gap and applying an alternating current of 1-5kHz and voltages of 4-8kV. In order to ensure energetic efficient plasmas, experiments were conducted to analyze the behaviour of different permittivity ceramics. It was found that the dielectric properties of a ceramic, when used in a DBD reactor, have a strong influence on the discharge characteristics, which in turn influence the power consumption. Higher dielectric constant resulted in higher conversion rates of methane (higher yield of hydrogen and carbon). At the same time, the mechanical properties of the dielectric material, which are closely associated with its processability, influenced its resistance to electron bombardment, as well as thermal and mechanical damage. Therefore a reliable ceramic should have good dielectric properties, in addition to good thermo-mechanical stability.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has investigated instrumentation and methods for measuring exposure to radon daughters in underground mine atmospheres. Both personal and area monitors have been studied through in-house and contract research. A field study in uranium mines identified some reliability problems that required additional work for the personal dosimeter systems. Improved versions of continuous working level detectors have been developed and tested for use as area monitors in underground mines. Test results for the personal and area monitors were satisfactory for underground mine applications.

Matthews matriculated at Roosevelt High School and joined the No. 1 Parachute Battalion in 1968. He worked in Zimbabwe for 31 years in geological prospecting, civil engineering, and open-pit mining.
