THE history of the froth flotation of coal is relatively short. The flotation process was applied to fine-coal cleaning about the time of the end of World War I. Coal flotation finds more widespread use in Europe than in the United States and is used on a commercial scale in nearly all major coal-producing countries in the world. In Fig. 1 the general arrangement of a froth-flotation plant at a British colliery is shown. GENERAL FEATURES OF THE PROCESS Application The flotation process is applicable to the cleaning of the fine sizes, particularly minus 48-mesh coal, although it may be used on sizes as coarse as % in. Since most cleaning processes usually are not effective on sizes smaller than 48-mesh and certainly not effective on minus 100¬mesh, the froth-flotation process offers a solution to the problem of cleaning these sizes. This process consists of agitating the feed pulp with a small amount of reagents, usually 1.0 to 91/ lb. per ton of feed in the presence of water and air; the reagents help to form small bubbles that collect on the particles having a greater affinity for the bubble surface than for the water surface, in this case the fine coal, and the bubbles buoy these particles to the surface to form the froth or concentrate. Slate and shale particles remain wetted and suspended in the water to be drawn off as tailing. The frothers commonly used in coal flotation are cresylic acid, pine oil, and alcohols. More expensive frothers, used in ore flotation, work satisfactorily but do not compare with these cheaper reagents for over-all cost. Collectors used are low-grade petroleum fractions, such as cheap, partly refined fuel oil, or lubricating oil, sometimes mixed with small amounts of kerosene. A wide variety of borehole gages have been developed for measuring rock stress. They all operate on the principle that stress changes around a borehole result in deformation that can be measured by the gage and interpreted in terms of the stress change either by calculation or calibration. In general terms, gages that comply with the borehole deformations are referred to as “deformation meters” and those that restrain the deformations by reason of their rigidity are referred to as “stress meters.” The main advantages claimed for stress meters are: their “stress” sensitivity is much less dependent on the rock modulus than that of deformation meters, and they are clamped firmly in the borehole. The use of each of the borehole gages developed for stress determinations in rock in the main has been confined to the laboratory responsible for its development. To be generally accepted a gage must meet the following specifications : 1) Gages to be left in place to measure stress changes must be relatively cheap, and if possible recoverable, so that large numbers can be used to obtain an overall picture of the changing conditions. This, of course, is not necessarily the case for recoverable gages designed for absolute rock stress measurements where usually only one or two gages are involved. 2) For use in the adverse environmental conditions encountered underground, it is essential that gages be robust, stable, and unaffected by high humidity, corrosive water, or dust. 3) Highly qualified technicians are rarely employed specifically for rock mechanics studies in mines or on civil engineering sites and there- fore gages designed for measuring stress changes must be easy to set and

The cause of reduced workability and increased ageing of a blast furnace taphole clay was examined. The investigated taphole clay contained 60 mass% alumina, with phenol-formaldehyde resole resin and liquid pitch serving as the binder system. The workability and Marshall extrusion pressure of the as-manufactured clay samples were evaluated to assess the extent of ageing of the clay. The wettability of all the raw materials was investigated to confirm compatibility between the dry raw materials and both the resin and liquid pitch, while the dry raw materials were analysed using XRF, XRD, and SEM-EDS. The characterisation of the resin and liquid pitch, as well as an analysis of their interaction, was performed using viscosity measurements, Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The analyses confirmed a chemical interaction between the resole resin and liquid pitch, where the chemical structure of the resole resin changed when mixed with pitch, preventing the typical curing behaviour of the resin. Upon ageing of the resin-pitch mixtures, the resin underwent premature cross-linking, causing the curing process to initiate at lower temperatures, i.e., earlier onset of curing. This premature cross-linking was likely due to secondary amines present in the liquid pitch, which acted as a catalyst for the curing process of the resin. This reduction in curing temperature after ageing was confirmed by an increase in binder viscosity, which was identified as the primary cause of reduced workability, accelerated ageing, and increased Marshall extrusion pressure of the taphole clay.

Una vez determinada la zona, se fija el precio de la venta al público a través de tres elementos: precio de venta en fábrica, costo del transporte y la utilidad del distribuidor. Otros estudios a considerar son los basados en los yacimientos, los cuales complementan mejor la información de la instalación. Entre estos, tenemos a los estudios geológicos, levantamiento topográfico, muestreo sistemático, estudio químico de los minerales y pruebas térmicas y físicas de los productos. La ubicación de la fábrica dependerá si se decide instalar en el sitio de la cantera o en el mismo centro de distribución. Como estudio final, se prevee que la materia prima esté constituída por elementos que químicamente y mineralógicamente sean los más idóneos para así recurrir a materiales de complemento cuya dificultad o facilidad para mezclarlos íntimamente, determine el proceso a utilizarse. En consecuencia, la instalación de dicha manufactura, es el resultado del estudio global de las condiciones provistas en un zona, para así constituirse dentro de un mercado económicamente lucrativo. Laboratory and pilot-plant tests of spodumene-beryl pegmatites of the Kings Mountain, N. C., area resulted in development of a new and improved method by the Bureau of Mines for separating and recovering spodumene, mica, and beryl. The process was successfully applied to other domestic pegmatites and a spodumene flotation-plant tailing containing about 0.5 percent beryl. The method comprised soap flotation of the spodumene, using combinations of sodium fluoride and lignin sulfonate as conditioning agents to recover 80 to 85 percent of the contained lithia in concentrates assaying over 6 percent Li20. About 80 percent or more of the beryl was retarded in the spodumene tailing. The beryl subsequently was activated, floated, and cleaned in a secondary circuit to yield beryl concentrates containing 6 to 7 percent BeO. The tests also demonstrated that a good recovery of high-grade mica could be produced.

THE application of scientific methods to the investigation of natural laws and to the conduct of the useful arts which are founded upon them, is year by year mitigating the asperity and enlarging the outcome of human endeavor. More notably, perhaps, are these the facts in that system of productive and constructive arts of, which engineering is the general name. In metallurgical engineering especially, within the period of our own recollection, how rapid has been the rate and how wide the scope of progress: the scientific discovery and mining of metalliferous veins; the economical separation and reduction of ores of every grade; the production and regulation of high temperatures; the varied improvements in the manufacture of iron, in saved heat and work, in uniformity and range of products ; and, most important of all, the creation and the utilization, to be counted by the million tons a year, of the cheap constructive steels. Wonderful as this range and degree of development may appear to the public eye, the close and thoughtful observer must, nevertheless, conclude that neither the profession nor the craft of engineering may congratulate themselves too complaisantly, but that they should rather acknowledge to each other the embarrassing incompleteness of the union between engineering science and art. There is a small school of philosophers whom we may designate as original investigators, men who come close to nature, who search into first principles, and who follow that scientific and therefore fruitful method by which the relations of matter and force are discovered, classified, and brought within the reach of practice. These wonderful - men do not indeed create the laws of nature, as they sometimes almost seem to, but they go up into the trembling mountain and the thick darkness and bring down the tables upon which they are written. * President's Opening Address. "Banded iron formations are the major iron source for producing high grade concentrate. BIF are generally lower grade and more difficult to extract. In order to know how best to process BIF ore, it require comprehensive knowledge on ore bodies even in the early stages of the mining process. Geometallurgy combines geological and mineral processing information and allows for higher flexibility in response to changes in the plant feed when mining different parts of the ore. This can lead to economic benefits, owing to improved plant operation, yet is time consuming and correspondingly costly. The main focus of this paper work has been to develop a comprehensive geometallurgical testing framework for developing Yogi BIF low grade magnetite deposit located at Western Australia. In order to provide successful geometallurgical mapping, was collected data from several different disciplines (geology, chemistry, mineralogy) and parameters (physical properties, metallurgical response and geotechnical measurements) during drilling activities and test work. The investigation shown magnetic separation behavior of material had high variation and is most important element in the proper design of ore beneficiation plant. This paper provides an improved and efficient magnetic separation test methods used for the investigation of separation behavior and variability of the Yogi Ore deposit and evaluates their applicability and potential in the geometallurgical context. In this paper a small-scale magnetic separation has been developed that allows estimating from single pass separation test using small amounts of sample material. Verification of the evaluation method and validation was done with different mineral systems."

The electrochemical performance of a series of carbon materials produced from coconut shells, which are very cheap and readily available in Bangladesh was investigated for their viability as anode materials in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. X-ray diffraction technique was used to measure the interlayer spacing (d002) of the produced carbon materials. A number of half-cells were prepared with the produced carbon materials from coconut shell as working electrode and metallic lithium as counter electrode with 1MLiPF6 electrolyte in a mixture of ethylene carbonate and dimethyl carbonate. The discharge-charge profiles were measured for the different half-cells by using Arbin 24-channel Cyler. The value of interlayer spacing of the coconut-based carbon material was found to be 0.397 nm at 900°C, which is most suitable for lithium-ion insertion into the carbon structure without any expansion. The specific discharge capacity of carbon material from coconut shell heat treated to 900°C was found to be 1015.65 mAh/g. The coconut carbon material heat treated to 900°C delivered 335.22 mAh/g reversible capacity, which is comparable to the commercial carbon/graphite presently used in lithium-ion battery systems. The irreversible capacity loss and coulombic efficiency in 25th cycle of half-cell made with coconut carbon material were found to be 0.16% and 99.83% respectively. The carbon material produced from coconut shell can, therefore, be used as a potential anode for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.

"The major features of the CANMET thermodynamic mine ventilation network program, developed by the Mining and Mineral Process Engineering Department of the University of British Columbia for the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET), are described.The program is designed for use by deep Canadian mines in planning ventilation flows where the effects of auto-compression of air, moisture lift work and natural ventilation are significant. Routines to simulate stalled fans and give an optional cost printout have been included in the program.A supplementary plotting program used to simplify data interpretation is also described.The program is described with a test data example of a deep mine. It is a valuable analytical tool which can assist ventilation engineers to simulate many alternative ventilation strategies at a low cost in a very short time.IntroductionCanadian underground mines are becoming deeper and more extensive. The use of more and larger diesel-powered equipment increases the amount of air required to be circulated in these complex systems. These effects, coupled with the increasing unit cost of the energy required for mine ventilation, require that the air is used with maximum efficiency.Optimum airflow distribution can be obtained by using network computer programs enabling engineers to plan future ventilation systems based on quantitative assessments. The programs used for deep mines must make allowance for the change of air density with depth, as the assumption of incompressible flow leads to serious errors. Natural ventilation effects may vary with depth and from part to part of the mine; this must be catered for by the program. The air moisture content changes throughout the circuit and a significant portion of the fan work may be used in removing moisture from the mine; as this work varies directly with the flow, a suitable relationship must be utilized in the program."

The mining of the Triassic coals of the Richmond basin has been carried on, upon a larger or smaller scale, for more than a hundred years. Notwithstanding the close proximity of the field to a large city and to tide-water, assuring both a good home-market and cheap transportation, and notwithstanding the good quality of the fuel and the great thickness of the principal bed developed and worked, operations in this field have been conducted with but limited success. The basin comprises about 189 square miles, being from 24 to 31½ miles in length by 5½ to 10 miles in width. Not much more than one-tenth of this area has been explored in a practical and efficient way, and not over 1200 acres have been worked near and along the outcrops or edges of the coal. The practical mistakes which have been committed undoubtedly in a number of the mine-operations of the past, do not alone explain the unsatisfactory success and progress of the industry of this field ; nor can it be ascribed to the lack of local enterprise. Other reasons have to be looked for; and, as a principal one, the irregularity and the faulted conditions of the coal deposits must be pointed out. As a second cause, the indifference of the State government, which leaves the development of the field entirely to private enterprise, instead of aiding it by systematical and practical geological investigations, deserves to be mentioned. The slate industry of the United States has shown a marked decline in value of products made annually since the peak year 1925, although there has been moderate improvement over the lean years 1932 to 1934. In 1940, the value of all slate products sold was approximately 5¾ million dollars for a total output of 473,450 short tons. The quantity sold was a little less and the value a great deal lower than the annual averages for the past two decades. Enormous quantities of waste materials result from the quarrying, splitting and milling of slate. Obviously, utilization of such waste material is desirable, not only from the viewpoint of economical operation but also for the purpose of conserving natural resources. One possible use is to produce expanded or puffed lightweight aggregate for use in concretes. Such concretes are strong enough for specific uses, and the advantage of lightness could be obtained in such structures as the walls and roofs of buildings, suspension-bridge roadways and various other applications where weight is a factor. Conceivably, these uses could consume an appreciable annual tonnage. Use of Waste Slates for Making Aggregates The lightweight-aggregate industry has been discussed elsewhere4,5 and need not be covered in detail in this paper. The materials commonly utilized are naturally occurring aggregates such as volcanic cinder, tuff and pumice; by-product materials, such as ordinary cinders and air-cooled slags; and the specially manufactured products, including Haydite, Pottsco, Gravelite, Cel-seal, Superock and Waylite. Slates, however, have not been given the consideration they merit, especially in the United States. In the British Isles, some work has been done3 on certain Welsh slates by the Building Research Station to stimulate the use of these wastes. Requirements for Raw Materials As pointed out by Hughes,4 the lightweight-aggregate industry is segregated in regions adjacent to large cities in order to localize the market and avoid the necessity of long freight haulage. Waste slate from the deposits of eastern Pennsylvania, northern Maryland, and Virginia would meet the basic requirement of ally low-priced structural raw material. One apparent advantage is attained when slate waste, normally discarded, is utilized in the manufacture of a by-product. Mining or quarrying costs usually have been assessed against the main product. Some additional grinding might be desirable, but this operation would be relatively cheap, as most slates grind easily. It is believed that virtually all slates, when properly heated, will expand to some degree. However, types that will expand from 3 to 7 times their original volume are preferred. The production of nickel coated mica composite powder by hydrogen reduction of a nickel ammine sulphate solution, followed by the production of molded plastic samples containing Ni/Mica is described. Sample preparation by injection or compression molding is outlined and the better results in compression molding are explained by the combination of better particle-to-particle contact, less particle breakage during processing, and more random particle distribution in the plastic. Three volume resistivity measurement techniques are described and compared. Two of them (conductive paint and silver-rubber electrodes) are found reliable and are used throughout the work. The influence of nickel content and particle size of Ni/Mica on volume resistivity is evaluated and the optimum product defined. One of the most important assets of Ni/Mica, its ease of injection molding, is demonstrated by the good electrical properties obtained with little optimization of the injection molding process. Surface roughness of molded plastics with and without Ni/Mica is briefly discussed. Shielding effectiveness of Ni/Mica in four plastics (PP, ABS, PBT and PC) is presented and correlated to volume resistivity data for the same materials. The addition of 15 to 50 weight % Ni/Mica (3 to 16 volume %) to plastics and subsequent injection or compression molding produces composite materials having low volume resistivities (0.03 to 1 ohm.cm) and high shielding effectiveness (40 to 70 dB).

SOAPS have been used as collectors for many years, but only in the last eight years have other long-chain paraffin salts been used. It may be anticipated that these newer collectors will be used mainly with nonsulphide minerals, for which the xanthates and similar compounds are of little value. On the other hand, the xanthates are both cheap and effective for sulphide ores and seem likely to retain their present eminence in this field. During 1938 and 1939 two of us (E. E. W. and I. W. W.) commenced a comprehensive investigation of the principles underlying the use of paraffin chain salts as flotation reagents. This research was sponsored jointly by the University of Melbourne and a group of Australian mining companies.[t] A broad, semi quantitative survey was then made of the field covered in the present paper. This was followed in 1940 by further work by one of us (K. L. S.). In 1941 the investigation was taken over by the Division of Industrial Chemistry of the Commonwealth Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Australia. Discovery of some principles upon which are based the flotation of minerals by paraffin chain salts was followed by their application in the development of processes for the recovery of certain strategic minerals from their ores. Promising results in the flotation of cassiterite from various ores will be described in a subsequent paper. THE PARAFFIN CHAIN SALTS The basic requirements for a "collector" in flotation are that it should form a film over the surface of the mineral to be floated, and that this film should be orientated so that hydrocarbon (nonpolar) groups form the effective surface. When modified in this way, the mineral surface possesses some degree of air avidity. All investigators would agree with Taggart, Taylor and Ince23 that such a film can be produced only if the collector compound contains an active (polar) group to attract it to the mineral surface as well as the nonpolar group. One section of this large class of polarnonpolar compounds is the paraffin chain salts: CH3(CH2) „X where X signifies a polar group that ionizes in aqueous solution. Though the compound can ionize, it may be a weak or a strong electrolyte, and the hydrocarbon chain may be in the cation or the anion (Table I). Many compounds of similar constitution are available, but the usual polar groups are: -CO2Na, -SO3Na, -SO4Na, - PO4Na2, or an aminonitrogen group, the

The major heavy industrial consumers of limestone are the cement, lime'and steel ind- ustries. Each of these requires large quantities of cheap raw material. Other ind- ustries such as glass and chemical manufactur- ing are significant consumers and agricultur- al and constructional activities provide additional demand which is usually more local in its occurrence. Limestone is widely dis- tributed throughout Australia but location in relation to major markets, and transport con- siderations render most deposits of no economic value. Among deposits which are sufficiently close to the major metropolitan markets many must be rejected as being unsuitable on grounds of quality, inadequate size for major.develop- ment, or other reasons such as environmental considerations. The major producing locations are sit- uated in a variety of geological environments. Most have limited reserves and require partic- ular attention to quality control. Planned extraction programmes based on detailed geo- logical investigations enable not only satis- factory grade control but also permit, by the adoption of appropriate quarry procedures, the use of sub-grade material, thus optimis- ing utilisation of the available reserves.

Recycling of solid wastes, a common practice nowadays, requires the separation of the different materials in order to increase the products added value. The separation of one plastic from mixtures of different types of plastics is not easy due to their similar physical properties, but different techniques are available, from automatic sorting systems based on optical sensors to techniques adapted from mineral processing, namely gravity, froth flotation and electrostatic processes. In the last decade, many researchers have addressed the separation?s problem of different polymers, like Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), two polymers commonly used in packaging which have similar density. One proposed technique is the classical froth flotation performed in agitated cells. Froth flotation is a versatile and relatively cheap process widely used in mineral separation. It is based on the different behaviour of particles in the presence of an inter-phase air-water, which depends on the materials surfaces properties. Froth flotation can be affected by some variables such as impeller speed and air flow rate. Agitated cells, when used with low density materials, like plastics, can produce overstated turbulence that prevents the adhesion and collection of particles in the froths. In this case, separation is favoured by column flotation smoother hydrodynamics. This paper proposes the separation of PET from PVC by column flotation. The experimental work was carried out in a column of 9cm diameter and 1m high. The effects of some operating conditions, such as depressor and frother concentration, air flow rate and feed grain size on products grade and recovery were evaluated and the best flotation conditions for the separation of these plastics were established.

Chrysotile asbestos is a valuable resource. Used as a reinforcement in asbestos cement, products are obtained which are cheap, are not attacked by vermin, do not rot or support growth of fungi and are unaffected by water or humid conditions. Such products are of great value in the developing countries where inexpensive and durable building materials and pressure pipe are very important to development, housing and water supplies. Concern over the adverse effects of inhaling asbestos has led to the introduction of increasingly stringent controls world wide on the quantities of airborne asbestos per- missible in the occupational situation. Wet processing has the potential for virtually eliminating the environmental concerns with asbestos dust both in fibre production and in the materials handling section of the manufac- ture of asbestos cement products. In addition, high efficiencies associated with wet process- ing mean that better yields are obtained and that the tailings which are dumped have a lower residual asbestos content. Since early 1977, ICI Australia and Woodsreef Mines have been engaged in a programme of research to develop and evaluate a wet mill- ingprocess to produce, from ore and existing tailings, high grade fibre suitable for use in asbestos cement products. The process has been developed through microscopic studies, labora- tory bench scale experiments, work in a small scale semi-continuous plant and product evalua- tion on experimental size Hatschek asbestos cement machines. A prototype mill with a normal feed rate of 1z tonnes per hour and capable of producing pipe grade asbestos from Woodsreef ore has been constructed and was operational from January, 1982 to July, 1983. A range of asbestos cement products have been made successfully on full scale Hatschek machines using fibre from ore and tailings milled in the prototype mill. Economic evaluations indicate that a wet process mill would be cheaper to build, operate and maintain than an equivalent dry process plant. A commercial plant has been designed 1. Based on a review of historical domestic and international chromium metal production capacity, production, consumption, trade, and trade literature, world annual chromium metal production capacity in 1995 was estimated to have been 38,300 metric tons, a drop from 43,500 tons in 1994. World chromium metal production and consumption were estimated, on average from 1984 through 1992, to have been 21,000 tons per year. U.S. consumption was estimated, on average over the same time period, to have been 6,200 tons per year. The major world chromium metal producers between 1984 and 1995 were China, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, United Kingdom, and United States. From 1984 through 1992, world trade averaged 8,400 tons per year. Germany and the United States accounted for over 75 percent of imports on average during the same time period. U.S. chromium metal import value rose from under $1 per kg before 1964 to over $6 per kg in 1993. Over the same time period, prices rose from about $4 per kg to about $10 per kg. Chemical specifications have become more stringent. Detailed chromium metal trade, prices, value, chromium metal chemical specification, and production capacity by country are reported. A shift in trade patterns was anticipated as Japan exits production and displaces Germany as the second largest importer and as Russia increases its role in world trade.

"This project constitutes the results of a geophysical field investigation undertaken in the mining areas in the vicinity of Marion, Crittenden County, Kentucky.Results were obtained at well-known mines being worked for fluorspar. Of special interest was the determination of mineral trends at such mines, particularly in relation to the fault patterns, because of ore in them.This work also constitutes a comparison between the field information that can be obtained by purely geological means and the additional information obtained by applying geophysical surveys to the same areas.As the mineralization in this area is controlled almost surely by the faults therein, the great importance of locating faults cannot be over emphasized. Accordingly, there has been incorporated herein the analyses as well as the application of electrical resistivity methods for fault determinations.In the western part of Kentucky, particularly in that area designated as the Cave-In-Rock quadrangle by the United States Geological Survey, is located the center of the fluorspar mining district of Kentucky. From the mining as well as commercial viewpoint, this area is of considerable interest and importance. It has been described by Currier4/ as a large structural dome that collapsed, through faulting, into a mosaic composed of a main fault pattern that has a strike to the northeast in sedimentary formations. Accompanying this main fault pattern are a large number of irregular faults. This fault complex is also traversed by a dike pattern that has a regional strike for this region focusing a northwesterly direction. The faulting occurred before the dike intrusions, the latter being composed largely of peridotite rocks. According to Reed,5/ most of the metallic mineralization, composed chiefly of galena and sphalerite, occurs at or near the Intersection of the dikes with the faults, indicating a possible igneous origin of the ore deposits. Reed adds that the fluorspar generally does not follow this rule but may also be found in other portions of the faulted zone not directly related to dike intrusions. The area may be considered of equal interest in the occurrence of lead and zinc and in the occurrence of fluorspar controlled by the faults. Hatmaker and Davis6/ give detailed information concerning the form of the ore bodies and economic factors that control ore production in this area; they also suggest the application of geophysical methods in this territory. Ulrich and Smith7/ also discuss geological details in this area. This area is therefore of interest, whether examined from a large structural point of view or from a very detailed angle. The former will assist in determining the origin of the mineralization and its economic possibilities, whereas the latter will give details concerning fault locations and their geologically and geophysically controlling features. This work was undertaken as a pilot investigation relating to the study of the location of fault occurrences, in which it was attempted to determine the location of faults as well as the fault patterns in certain isolated areas. No effort was made to identify the mineralization from the gouge material in the faulted zones; this problem was left for subsequent investigations."
