MINE ventilation has for many years been the subject of intensive study by numerous investigators who have presented their findings in forms that are understandable to the average mining man, and all this writer hopes to do is to review those findings in relation to the 'manager's' problem in mine ventilation. It would not, perhaps, be wholly correct to acclaim practical mine ventilation as an exact science, because of the many variables entering into the problem. Each mine has its own particular problem and ventilation characteristics. Fan design, in contra distinction to mine ventilation, is an exact science, but the designer cannot always take into proper consideration the practical variations to which each mine is subject. Fan designers, accordingly, are forced to base their design on such data as the mine manager or engineer is able to supply, and, when it is borne in mind that the mine characteristic is constantly changing, it is not at all surprising that fans do not always show efficiencies hoped for. In many instances, fans work far beyond the de-signer's limitations, and, in consequence, are an economic disability in the colliery cost-sheet, and it is of paramount importance that the colliery manager evaluate all the factors involved in relation to fan performance for the colliery to receive full benefit from its investment.

MOST underground mining operations are dependent on pumping installations to keep the mine unwatered. The reliability of such installations is obviously of paramount importance. The volume of water to be handled is often considerable, and the total head is relatively high. In these cases, both capital cost and operating expense of the pumping installations will become significant factors in overall mining costs. To insure reliability and to keep efficiencies, and hence operating cosl;s, within acceptable limits it goes without saying that mechanical maintenance of a mine pumping installation must receive scrupulous attention at all times. Large mine pumping installations today almost invariably use multistage centrifugal pumps, since positive-displacement units would not be economically competitive except under very unusual conditions of small volume combined with extremely high heads. Centrifugal pump maintenance, under ideal circumstances, would be confined to parts subject to normal running water, i.e., bearing surfaces, stuffing box packing, and shaft sleeves. Under adverse conditions, however, metal may be lost from the wetted surfaces of a pump by erosive or corrosive action of the pumped fluid, and maintenance costs can easily attain enormous proportions. The following definitions are those most generally used for the phenomena encountered. Erosion is a general term meaning mechanical removal of material from a surface. As applied to pumps, it may be the result of simple abrasion, such as that produced by suspended solid matter in the liquid being pumped. In common with other hy-

"The mission of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center (NMIC) is to collect, analyze and disseminate information on the domestic and international supply of and demand for minerals and mineral materials essential to the U.S. economy and national security. Understanding mineral exploration activities and trends assists government policy makers, minerals industry decision makers and research entities in identifying where future sources of mineral supply are likely to be discovered, the amount and type of these resources and factors that may affect exploration and development.This review summarizes significant exploration trends related to active sites and budgets, mineral commodities and regional factors for the years 2001-2015. Data were compiled by specialists in the USGS-NMIC, and reported annually in the USGS-NMIC Minerals Yearbook series and in the May issue of Mining Engineering magazine. External data for these analyses were derived from industry sources, published literature, and SNL Metals & Mining, an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence (New York, NY).The USGS-NMIC compiled exploration site data for more than 80 mineral commodities, focusing on base metals, diamond and precious metals. More than $138 billion constant U.S. dollars were budgeted by the minerals industry from 2001 through 2015 to explore more than 16,000 mineral deposits globally (SNL Metals & Mining, 2016a). Annual analyses identified where mineral exploration took place by principal commodity target, ranked the magnitude of activity in each region, identified the factors that most affected changes in exploration activity and highlighted developments that led to changes in global supply or increased diversity of supply to the United States. Geographic classifications noted in this report were Africa, Australia, Canada, China, Latin America, Pacific, Russia, United States and Rest of the World."

1. The investigation shows that nine coal beds have been mined in Harlan County, of which the Harlan and Upper Elkhorn No, 3 are the most important from the standpoint of present production. Of less importance are the Hindman, Flag, Haddix, Wax, Fire Clay, Armburgy, and Upper Elkhorn No. 2. The Harlan, Upper Elkhorn No. 3, and Upper Elkhorn No. 2 beds contain the largest remaining known reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 2,138 million short tons as of January I, 1932. Of this total, 1,956 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study, Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

"INTRODUCTION The subject of mine and tunnel ventilation has two broad aspects - (1) what atmospheric conditions to obtain in underground openings and (2) how to maintain the desired conditions efficiently. The first relates primarily to quantity requirements of ventilating systems, whereas the second relates more particularly to pressure requirements. Both, therefore, determine power requirements, which is the deciding factor in any system of mine or tunnel ventilation.Both divisions of the subject have received considerable attention from the Bureau of Mines since its inception in 1910 in the form of research, service, and correlation and dissemination of information. Numerous papers on various Phases of the subject have been published, of which a selected list, numbered and arranged in chronological order by type of publication, will be found at the end of this Paper. One of these, Technical Paper 705 (25) 2/ gives a complete bibliography of Bureau of Mines publications dealing with health and safety. As indicated by the selected list of publications accompanying this paper, the health and safety aspects have received most of the attention devoted to this work, chiefly because these have been dominant factors in Bureau policy, but partly because these aspects lend themselves to laboratory research and small-scale field studies. Although considerable attention has also been devoted to the engineering aspects of mine and tunnel ventilation, there has been, in the opinion of the author, who has been engaged on this phase almost continuously for the last 30 years, only sporadic recognition of the vital effect this phase of the work could have on improving health and safety conditions. As a matter of fact, ventilation activities have constituted but a very minor part of the total work of the Bureau of Mines, as, except for a few years in the nineteen twenties, there have been only a few short intervals when more than two or three men were engaged in field work and a similar number in laboratory research directly related to mine gases or mine air."

Next generation flotation agents of KSK series for the concentration of complex copper-lead ores and the new ferromagnetic nanosized depressor of galena are introduced in this work. The feature of the KSK flotation agents is that they exhibit both frother and collector properties. KSK-6 can successfully substitute the widely used in Kazakhstani industry reagent ?-80 at the reduced consumption of butyl xanthate by 30 %. The new ferromagnetic nanosized depressor of galena, besides a low consumption rate of 100 g/t, also makes possible to exclude sodium sulfite (3-4 kg/t) and ferrous sulfate (5-6 kg/t) from the separation process, and receive high metal grade concentrates. THE conventional method of making water gas involves individual plants for the separate carbonization of coal to coke and the subsequent gasification of coke with steam. The process demands lump coke, preferably made from the best quality of coking coals. The ash in the coke should have a high melting point and the gasification process suffers a loss of efficiency when cokes with low ash-melting points are used. In Britain, these coals are generally the most expensive and they are readily available only in certain localities. The coals not suitable for making lump coke, or yielding only poor quality coke, are much more widely available and are generally cheaper. DEVELOPMENT OF ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES In Germany, processes have been developed and operated commercially for the production of water gas from very low-rank coals such as brown coal and lignites, but much less effort has been spent on processes to use coals of intermediate rank, which are widely available in Britain. The brown-coal processes use coal in the form of either dust or briquettes. The most successful of the dust-gasification methods is the Winkler process, which made a substantial contribution to German oil production during the war. It uses coal in the size range 0 to 8 mm and the fuel bed is blown with a mixture of oxygen and steam at a rate high enough to give it a characteristic boiling motion or, in present-day phraseology, at a rate more than sufficient to fluidize it (Fig. 1). Air cannot be used to provide the heat required for gasification, for vari¬ous reasons. In the first place, to make the process continuous by mixing air and steam would involve the production of a lean gas containing much nitrogen. If a separate blow were used, a large amount of potential heat would be lost because the blow gas in such a process would contain a very high percentage of carbon monoxide. Oxygen is necessary therefore and oxygen remains relatively expensive for use in gasification. In the Winkler generator, formation of clinker caused by local overheating does not occur, because of the mobility and high heat transfer of a fluidized bed. These properties of fluidized dusts have been used most successfully.

Viscosity has been measured for various molten binary alloys of nickel with iron, cobalt and chromium in order to clarify the behavior of viscous flow of molten nickel alloys. The entire concentration range for iron and cobalt and 0-67at% of chromium content were studied. The measurement method was an oscillating cup viscometry using an alumina crucible that was precisely machined. The temperature was up to about I 880K for all the measurements. The results represented good Arrhenian relationship although some measurements included overcooled temperatures. The isothermal viscosities increased monotonously with an addition of iron and chromium into nickel. The addition of cobalt increased after stationariness. The isothermal viscosities showed concave curves. Activation energies increased monotonously by adding all the elements into nickel. These phenomena were considered to be related to the thermodynamic properties 'such as the heat of mixing and the structures of mixture melts.

"The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act Public Law 109-236) was passed by Congress in response to three major underground coal mine accidents in the United States that claimed the lives of 19 miners. The Act resulted in substantial changes in the underground coal industry relative to the use of technology for mine escape, rescue, disaster response and other areas where the lack of these technologies contributed to the fatalities caused by these tragedies. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the MINER Act, which makes it an opportune time to reflect on the events that led to its passage, the changes that have been made since then, and the work that remains to be done.As discussed below, the last decade has demonstrated tremendous cooperative efforts among mining operators, technology innovators, labor, The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and state regulators, resulting in substantial improvement of the technologies used for escape and rescue and noteworthy progress toward meeting many of the goals of the MINER Act. While the MINER Act and this article pertain primarily to coal mining, many of the technologies are equally applicable to any underground mining and have already found some acceptance outside of coal.Technology gaps targeted by the MINER ActThe MINER Act addressed several technology challenges:• Problems with donning and switching between self-contained, self-rescuers (SCSRs).• Poor visibility in smoke.• No wayfinding assistance for escape from the mine.• Limited breathable air supply.• Inability to locate trapped miners.• Inability to communicate with trapped miners.• Failure of mine seals."

Este trabalho foi realizado a partir da identificação do problema da alta geração de resíduos cafeeiros e de emissão de gases poluentes pelas indústrias siderúrgicas. Ao analisar as emissões nacionais de sistemas de energia, observou-se que o segmento da indústria de aço tem uma importante participação devido ao alto consumo de carvão metalúrgico e coque no balanço energético. O projeto teve como objetivo utilizar duas biomassas, a casca de café e o carvão vegetal, como uma fonte de energia no processo de redução do minério de ferro, através da injeção de finos pulverizados pelas ventaneiras de altos-fornos. O cafeeiro e a planta de eucalipto são fontes renováveis, ao contrário do carvão mineral, e através da fotossíntese capturam o gás CO2 da atmosfera, reduzindo parte da poluição causada pelos altos-fornos à coque. Para simular a possibilidade de injetar as biomassas estudadas, um simulador de injeção de materiais pulverizados foi utilizado. Foram utilizadas, também, técnicas para caracterizar os materiais, como classificação granulométrica, combustão, calorimetria, análise de gás, superfície específica, microscópica e química. Através do estudo, esta pesquisa mostra que a casca de café pode ser injetada em altos-fornos substituindo parcialmente a moinha de carvão vegetal.

This report is the second of a series of three that will evaluate, in order, the metallothermic, carbothermic, and electrolytic methods of magnesium production. The historical development of the carbothermic process is outlined. Production costs varying from 38.9 to 21.8 cents per pound of magnesium are estimated for different versions of the process. Additional suggested process modifications are listed. The technical and economic potential of the different versions are compared. Areas deemed most promising for future research on the process are delineated.

"The advent of digital revolution has now enabled us with numerous tools that could be leveraged to transform our operational data into actionable insights. Key opportunities with digitization include better visualization, transparency, integrated planning and execution for value-chain optimization, that results in smarter production, intelligent response to changes in ore, process and equipment conditions, reduce energy and waste along with prevention of asset breakdown, safety and environmental issues. A gold recovery improvement strategy based on optimal Gaudin size distribution, leaching performance monitoring and guidance via feed grade maps is discussed. Simultaneous identification of process and equipment constraints enable finding the best overall conditions for Gold recovery. This paper discusses the methodology, findings, and challenges in the ongoing journey of implementing a Metallurgy Analytics platform that evolves from being retrospectively descriptive to anticipatively prescriptive.INTRODUCTION The last few decades have seen some remarkable advancement in information technology, but recently various digital technologies have resulted in several synergies to deliver innovation in diverse applications. The mining industry has been relatively slow in adopting these technologies compared to the other industries, but this scenario is changing fast. Mining companies globally are going through a series of challenges such as declining ore grades with complex metallurgy, increasing depth of ore bodies, high capital and operating costs, lower productivity, shortage of technical resources, significant pressure from stakeholders to deliver, along with growing environmental and corporate social responsibility issues. Improvement in profitability would need significant improvements in operational performance."

The Cow Run sand was cored and electrical and radioactivity surveys were made in C. E. Vandevender well 35 in the Burning Springs pool of the Burning Springs oilfield , Wirt County , W. Va . Laboratory tests , reservoir - fluid analysis , well - log interpretation , and available field data indicate that a substantial quantity of oil may be recovered from this pressure - depleted reservoir by waterflooding . Two formations erroneously believed to be the First and Second Cow Run sands were similarly evaluated in A. E. Mackintosh well 8 , Anns Run Pool , Wirt County , W. Va . , but were found unsuitable for secondary - recovery operations .

Introduction A comprehensive study of the economics of processes for smelting iron ores has been made by the Ontario Research Foundation on behalf of the Ontario Research Commission. This survey has included investigations of all processes in commercial use, and proposed processes which are still in the experimental stage. The two main objects of this work were to discover (l) whether any known processes would be particularly suited to present and future Canadian conditions, and (2) whether any new process would be of assistance in solving the present scrap shortage in Canada. The future prospects of the Canadian iron smelting industry have changed radically in the past ten years. For nearly twenty years before 1939 no iron ore was mined in Canada. The ore used was imported, mainly from the United States and Newfoundland. The economics of iron blast-furnace smelting always force the location of blast furnaces near the source of coal for making high-grade metallurgical coke, and near the market for iron and steel, rather than near the iron ore. Blast-furnace installations in Canada are confined to the north shores of the Great Lakes with ready access to United States coal and ore and the major Canadian markets, and to Nova Scotia near the coalfields of that Province. This distribution of primary smelting capacity naturally results in relatively high prices for iron and steel in the West, the North, and in Quebec.

Indoor physical security, as a perpetual and multi-layered phenomenon, is a timeintensive and labor-consuming task. Various technologies have been leveraged to develop automatic access control, intrusion detection, or video monitoring systems. Video surveillance has been significantly enhanced by the advent of Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras and advanced video processing, which together enable effective monitoring and recording. The development of ubiquitous object identification and tracking technologies provide the opportunity to accomplish automatic access control and tracking. Intrusion detection has also become possible through deploying networks of motion sensors for alerting about abnormal behaviors. However, each of the above-mentioned technologies has its own limitations. This paper presents a fully automated indoor security solution that leverages an Ultra-wideband (UWB) Real-Time Locating System (RTLS), PTZ surveillance cameras and a Building Information Model (BIM) as three sources of environmental data. Providing authorized persons with UWB tags, unauthorized intruders are distinguished as the mismatch observed between the detected tag owners and the persons detected in the video, and intrusion alert is generated. PTZ cameras allow for wide-area monitoring and motion-based recording. Furthermore, the BIM is used for space modeling and mapping the locations of intruders in the building. Fusing UWB tracking, video and spatial data can automate the entire security procedure from access control to intrusion alerting and behavior monitoring. Other benefits of the proposed method include higher accuracy and robustness, more complex query processing, and interoperability with other BIM-based solutions. A prototype system is implemented that demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed method.

Este trabalho visa apresentar os resultados de um estudo de correlação envolvendo concentração magnética nas escalas bancada-piloto e piloto-industrial. Os testes que sustentam este estudo foram realizados no CPT (Centro de Pesquisas Tecnológicas da Vale). A correlação entre as escalas piloto-industrial tende a ser direta, uma vez que, concentradores magnéticos piloto possuem os mesmos mecanismos de atuação de um industrial. Por outro lado, entende-se que a correlação entre as escalas bancada-piloto não seja tão direta assim, necessitando de um entendimento/conhecimento maior para descrevê-la. Aproveitou-se este trabalho também para estudar uma forma de melhorar o modelo atual utilizado pelo CPT em interpretações mineralógicas voltadas para concentração magnética. A metodologia deste trabalho foi dividida em seis etapas distintas: escolha das amostras, amostragem industrial, caracterização das amostras, interpretação mineralógica, testes piloto, testes de bancada e análise de correlação. Em relação aos resultados, este trabalho confirma a interpretação mineralógica como uma boa ferramenta para estimar recuperação mássica e qualidade de concentrado em processos de concentração magnética, e que modelo utilizado atualmente pelo CPT apresenta melhores resultados em relação à modificação proposta neste trabalho. Os testes piloto apresentam resultados praticamente idênticos aos resultados da industrial, confirmando que a correlação entre as escalas piloto-industrial é direta. Por fim, este trabalho confirma que é possível correlacionar os resultados de bancada com os resultados da piloto. Os gráficos de correlação apresentam R2 superior a 0.77, podendo se basear na utilização de equações de regressão para estimar resultados piloto, a partir dos resultados de bancada. Entretanto, entende-se que é necessário realizar teste complementares, uma vez que, o espaço amostral (número de amostras estudadas) foi pequeno.

California’s San Diego County Water Authority provides a safe and reliable water supply to more than 3.3 million residents through twenty-four member agencies. The 2nd Aqueduct pipelines, a critical infrastructure consisting of three large-diameter pipelines, are susceptible to natural threats including streambed erosion, channel migration, and seismic hazards within the 3,840-foot-long Moosa Canyon segment of the alignment. A state-of-good repair, hazard mitigation, and resiliency project is progressing to ensure uninterrupted water supply. For each pipeline, a segment will be replaced by tunneling. A high-level project development approach is presented, focusing on alternative selection, environmental and geotechnical considerations, and operations and maintenance constraints.

Crushing plant managers need to assess, manage, and communicate the environmental impact induced by their crushing plant operations as a step towards the sustainable development of the company. However, performing reliable environmental impact calculations of crushing plants can be challenging when the availability of operational and emission data is low, and when the company’s environmental expertise is not adapted and connected to plant operations (or does not currently exist). To address these challenges, this paper proposes a practical approach where the lifecycle assessment methodology (LCA) is combined with process simulations in a web-based tool. To describe what functionality such a tool should have to be incorporated into a company’s workflow, the system that surrounds a crushing plant is analysed. Further, a case study with a three-stage crushing plant is introduced to showcase how the simulated power draw results produced with the beta version of the tool can be compared to measured sensor data from the crushing plant for one operational day. The results indicate that the simulation tool can provide an adequate estimation of the specific energy for the different material fractions and give an overview of the environmental impact of the process caused by electricity and explosives consumption. Plant managers and operators can use this tool to calculate the environmental impacts of their plant and simulate how different operational strategies influence them. Bureau of Mines engineers end others have endeavored to deter-nine a fundamental method for gauging the capacity of gas wells to deliver gas under different pressure conditions. Their studies show that for accurate gauging two factors must be determined: (1) The actual pressures at the face of the sand in the well (usually referred to as "at the sand"), acid (2) the relation between such pressures and the rates. of flow of c as through the sand. This paper, the first of a series, describes a method of attacking the problem of determining the actual pressures at the sand by means of observations of pressures and volumes at the well head.
