In 2010, Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s operations commenced the planning and design of a sampling and analysis system for the new 50 Mt/a Cape Lambert Port B (CLB) facility. Current sampling systems at the ports consist of automated robotic, mass-based sampling protocols employed at Dampier, and semi-automated, time-based sampling systems operating at Cape Lambert Port A.The new sampling system at CLB has brought together a fully automated sampling and analysis system utilising time-based sampling, with the capacity to sample ore products of medium quality variation as defined in ISO 3082 (ISO, 2009). The CLB system is required to sample at shiploading rates from 6000 t/h to 13 440 t/h and provide full load-port analysis. The sampling approach is to proportionally extend primary increments (of varying mass relative to shiploading rate) to a standard length using variable speed aero-belt conveyor systems. This enables a fixed number of secondary cuts to be achieved for all primary increment masses and to be delivered to the automated cell. The cell is required to be capable of concurrently processing four individual shipments, each containing multiple cargoes.Achieving the target sampling precision for all export cargo sizes has culminated in the planning, design and construction of the largest automated iron ore port laboratory in the world. The CLB sampling and analysis cell was commissioned in Q3 and Q4 2013. No Lingotamento Contínuo de Planos (placas de aço) o número de corridas realizadas em um único distribuidor é um indicador de performance operacional de enorme relevância para a sustentabilidade do processo. Ligados ao desempenho deste indicador estão os resultados de índices como produtividade, redução de custos, segurança e qualidade. Buscando melhorar este indicador a ArcelorMittal Aços Planos América do Sul – Unidade Tubarão iniciou no final de 2012 um projeto multisetorial subdividido em vários subprojetos satélites para aumentar o número de corridas em um único distribuidor visando obter ganhos nos índices técnicos descritos anteriormente. A proposta de meta oriunda deste projeto visava aumentar em no mínimo 70% os valores médios de corridas em um único distribuidor no Lingotamento Contínuo de Placas, o que representaria ganhos superiores a 1,2 milhões de dólares por ano. Neste trabalho é apresentada a metodologia definida para o projeto com suas respectivas etapas, o resumo de alguns subprojetos de sustentação e os resultados que já foram atingidos.

ZEBALLOS is a relatively new mining camp. It is on the west coast of Vancouver island, approximately 195 nautical miles northwestward from Victoria. Previous to 1934, a small amount of placer gold had been recovered from the Zeballos river and tributary creeks. However, it was not until the winter of 1934-35, when shipments of high-grade gold ore were made from the property of the White Star Gold Mines, Limited, that lode gold mining really began. Since then, several new mines and many promising prospects have been found. Milling in standard sized mills only commenced late in 1938, when the 75-ton mill of Privateer Mines, Limited, and the 50-ton mill of Spud Valley Gold Mines, limited, were first turned over. The most striking feature of the camp is the high-grade quality of the ore as usually mined. At one property, the ore along a drift 650 feet long has ranged from 5.8 ounces per ton to 17.5 ounces, over average vein-widths ranging from 8.3 inches to 14.5 inches in selected blocks along the drift. One . high-grade shipment of 196.6 pounds of ore from the same property contained 142.877 ounces of gold. The present paper deals only with that part of the area in which mining operations are most active, namely the main Zeballos River valley and its tributaries, Spud and Goldvalley creeks. During the summer of 1938, prospecting was carried on beyond this circumscribed area. The geology and early developments in the area have been described in the following reports: (1) CLOTHIER, G. "Higher production demands across all bulk handling segments require increased efficiency at the lowest cost of operation, in the safest and most effective manner possible. As conveyor systems become wider, faster and longer, more energy output and more controlled throughput will be needed. Add an increasingly stringent regulatory environment and cost-conscious plant managers must closely review which new equipment and design options align with their long-term goals for the best return on investment (ROI).There are primarily two separate market segments using conveyor belts. One is in process industries such as food, chemicals, paper and powders. Handled in relatively low volumes, the bulk materials that enter these processes are generally of a consistent size and quality. The other market includes mining, coal handling and cement, where the bulk material’s quality and size vary, and the volumes are typically much greater. While both segments face similar issues with safety and environmental control, the properties of the materials handled and the volumes transferred suggest different approaches, with one thing in common: increased belt speeds requiring modern equipment upgrades.Safety at higher belt speedsWith companies recognizing that safety does indeed pay, safety is likely to become a new source of cost reduction. The percentage of mines and processing facilities with a robust safety culture are likely to increase over the next 30 years to the point where it is the norm, not the exception. In most cases, with only a marginal adjustment to the belt speed, operators quickly discover unanticipated problems in existing equipment and workplace safety. These problems are commonly indicated by the larger volume of spillage, increased dust emissions, belt misalignment and more frequent equipment wear or failures."

"Following initial discovery in 1991, BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc. opened Canada’s first diamond mine, the EKATI Diamond Mine (EKATI) in the Northwest Territories on October 14, 1998. Four short years later, on November 29, 2002, saw the opening of North America’s first underground diamond mine, the Koala North mine. Nestled between the original Panda open pit and the new Koala pit, which is in the early stages of production, Koala North represents the only underground kimberlite mining venture in Arctic conditions outside the new underground mines being developed by ALROSA in the Yakutsk region of eastern Russia. Extensive underground kimberlite mining has been practiced in the Republic of South Africa for much of the 20th century and continues today.Underground mining represents a key component of the long-term business plan for EKATI. As various open pits reach their economic limit, continued recovery of high-value ore at depth is dependent upon the ability to productively mine the kimberlite pipes by underground methods. As a function of its location, size, and value, the Koala North pipe is ideally positioned to host the first underground mine at EKATI. Koala North is designed and approved as a learning mine, from which to gain valuable experience in preparation for the potential mining of other larger, higher value pipes by underground methods in the development, the Koala North mine is well into its production ramp-up phase and currently producing at around 1,200 t/day from the first two production levels."

1. Introductory Some members may recall that at the Annual Meeting two years ago I read a paper, 'The Future of the Mining Industry in Canada." Discussing this large subject it was possible only to outline the facts and inferences leading to ?the conclusion that Canada is a country endowed with enormous mineral wealth, of which the fringes are yet scarcely touched. In the present paper, I wish to examine in somewhat fuller detail the evidence, both direct and inferential, concerning the mineral wealth of the greatest physical and geological feature of Canada-the Precambrian Shield. Many, if not most, of these facts are already familiar to you. But, since they will form the basis of the reasoning employed, they will be recalled for explicit reference. First, let us review very briefly the position and extent of the Shield. The area of the entire Shield is given in textbooks as 2,000,000 square miles, of which perhaps 10 or 12 per cent. is exposed in the south-easterly part of Canada's Arctic islands. The remainder occupies roughly two-thirds of the North-west Territory; the north-east corner of Alberta; one-third of Saskatchewan ;two-thirds of Manitoba; three-fourths of Ontario; and nearly ninety-five per cent. of Quebec.

The Esmeralda mine is located about three miles west of the town of Parral, in the State of Chihuahua, Northern Mexico, and about 400 miles south of El Paso, Texas. The area is serviced by the Interamerican Highway and a branch line of the National Railways of Mexico. The Parral district is quite typical of the semidesert of Northern Mexico, lying near the western margin of the Chihuahua basin and range province known in Mexico as the ?Mesa Central? In the immediate mine area, low rounded hills and rolling plans slope toward the Parral River. Surface elevation at the mine is 5,800 feet. The Esmeralda vein outcrops strongly, but was too low grade to be of interest to the Spaniards, The first claims were staked in 1897 and limited exploration work to a depth of 550 feet was carried out prior to 1912, at which time work was suspended. The Eagle-Picher Company acquired the property in 1944 and by surface diamond drilling outlined an orebody to a depth of 800 feet, Minas de Iguala, S. A, de C.V., one of Eagle-Picher?s totally owned subsidiary companies in Mexico, then unwatered the old workings, developed the mine, installed a modern differential flotation plant and started production lage in 1948. To the present, more than two and ahalf million tons of ore have been mined and milled producing lead and zinc concentrates.

Volcanic ash, although a little-used Kansas resource, is available in forty counties with estimated, reserves of more than 20 million tons. It was first produced in Kansas in the early 1900?s but not until the early 1920 is did it become an important abrasive material. Total production to date is estimated at 2 million tons, the major use being as an abrasive in scouring compounds and soaps, additional uses include ceramic glazes, an additive in cement, and a filler and stabilizer in hot mix asphalt for paving. Unrecorded tonnages have also been used in construction of black-top (macadam) roads. From 1916 through 1944, Kansas ranked first among the states in volcanic ash production; peak production was about 52, 000 tons in 1923. Since 1945, production has steadily declined, primarily because materials other than volcanic ash are now being used for abrasives; only two producers operated in 1964.

of high specific gravity, resistant minerals that form from mechanical concentration by waves, currents, and winds in marginal-marine environments. These sediments are enriched in critical minerals such as titanium, zirconium, and REE. Cretaceous beach-placer sandstones are found in the Colorado Plateau of northwestern New Mexico. Originally discovered by airborne radiometric surveys for uranium in the 1950s, these beach-placer sandstones are being re-examined with modern methods as potential sources for critical minerals. Selected beach-placer sandstones have been sampled, mapped with ground radiometric surveys, and analyzed with whole-rock and trace element geochemical methods. Mineralogy is being determined with optical methods, XRD, and EMPA. Zircon, rutile, ilmenite, and monazite are the primary heavy minerals of interest found in the studied deposits. Initial results show that the sandstones contain up to 1.4% total REE, 29.4% TiO2, and an estimated 4.9% ZrO2. Chondrite-normalized REE diagrams show distinct light REE and minor heavy REE enrichment, as well as pronounced negative Eu anomalies for each deposit.

This paper concerns the development and application of a high throughput multi-stream photometric sorting machine developed for the South African gold mines. It is now believed that this sorter and its progeny may be found suitable for a large proportion of all possible sorting applications. A laser light source and sensitive photomultiplier are employed in a scanning system to detect light reflected from the surfaces of rocks passing through the sorting zone. Electronic circuitry then analyzes the photomultiplier signal, which represents the varying intensity of the reflected light, and produces control signals to actuate the appropriate valves of an array of air blast rejection devices to remove from the feed certain particles selected by the analyzing process. Typical throughput per machine ranges from 50 tons/hour for a-2 ½? + 1 ¼? feed to 200 tons/hour for -6" +2 ¾ " material.

The Valle Vidal Unit comprises 100,000 acres In Taos and Colfax: Counties, New Mexico. The unit was donated to the American public In 1982 by the Pennzoll Co. and is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service as an addition to the Carson National Forest. During 1990-1991, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral Investigation of the unit as authorized by an Interagency Agreement (1987) Intended to assist the Forest Service to incorporate mineral resource data In forest plans. The Bureau reviewed literature and records concerning mineral resources and mining activity, and performed a field examination of mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences in and near the Valle Vidal Unit. The La Belle mining district encompasses most of the western part of the Valle Vidal Unit. The district was most active between 1893 and 1902, after the land grant was opened to prospecting and gold discoveries were reported. The discoveries were low grade, and eventually were abandoned. The Bureau's appraisal of the district determined that lode gold occurs primarily in fissure veins in volcanic rocks, and placer gold occurs In weakly cemented sedimentary rocks and alluvial sediments; but at a grade that is currently considered subeconomic. If the price of gold increases in the future, prospecting and exploration in the area may be renewed, but the activity would likely be limited due to "acquired land status" restrictions, which require mineral leasing and prohibit claim location in the Valle Vidal Unit.

As otimizações termodinâmicas de sistema ternários ou de maior ordem contendo titânio necessitam que os sistemas binários Ti-X estejam consistentemente definidos e otimizados. O sistema Ti-Si já foi amplamente estudado e otimizado termodinamicamente. Um dos seus compostos intermediários, a fase Ti5Si3, foi inicialmente considerada estequiométrica nas primeiras otimizações termodinâmicas para facilitar os cálculos, embora os resultados experimentais confirmassem a sua não estequiométrica. A otimização mais recente modelou esta fase como sendo não-estequiométrica com 3 sub-redes. A solubilidade foi considerada em duas das três sub-redes, uma na sub-rede do Si e outra na sub-rede do Ti. O problema dessa abordagem é que ela pode aumentar significativamente o número de variáveis a serem otimizadas no cálculo de sistemas ternários Ti-Si-X, dificultando assim a sua convergência durante processamento computacional. O presente trabalho simplifica a otimização do sistema Ti-Si, considerando que o Ti5Si3 é sempre hiper-estequiométrico somente em relação ao Ti. Deste modo, mantêm três sub-redes, mas elimina-se a ocupação do Si na sub-rede do Ti. Os resultados mostram que esta simplificação não afetou significativamente o valor das propriedades termodinâmicas do sistema.

The effect of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), as a preceding stage to a conventional ball mill circuit at PT Freeport Indonesia?s C1/C2 concentrators, has been studied in terms of downstream grinding efficiency and circuit performance. When milling the product from the HPGR, mill capacity increased by 21% for the same product grind size, when compared to processing similar ore from a conventional crushing circuit. This achievement is a result of several reasons, among them: reduction in feed size (F80), fines generation beyond the proportional reduction in F80, reduction in ore hardness induced by HPGR comminution mechanism, optimization of the recycle system of the HPGR and ball string optimization in the ball mill circuit given the new feed to the mill.

Traditional loading systems have relied for many years on wheel and track loaders, power shovels, conveyor belts, and more recently, hydraulic front shovels. Each has certain advantages and disadvantages, depending largely on job conditions. Hydraulic backhoes were introduced several years ago as still another truck loading option. At first, buckets were small and backhoe use was limited to small earthmoving projects. Now, as backhoes are equipped with shorter sticks and bigger buckets to move larger quantities of earth. The "mass excavation" concept offers an excellent truck loading option in many situations. System Development and Advantages Mass excavation was first used successfully by contractors in site development and highway construction, loading both on-highway and off-highway trucks. Operators were able to take advantage of the excavator's ability to work in poor underfoot conditions and dig in tough materials. The technique was first applied to mining in the kaolin mines of central Georgia. Kaolin, one of the world's most abundant minerals, is used to make paper, paint, ceramics, rubber, plastics, and many other products. Since kaolin clay is slippery when wet, load-out with wheel loaders is very inefficient. Also, kaolin is found in very spotty deposits due to the weathering process involved in its formation. Consequently, draglines are also impractical for kaolin mining since they don't have the mobility to move between clay deposits. In response to these mining conditions and kaolin characteristics, mines began using excavators in mass excavation as early as 1976. They have developed a system that takes advantage of the excavator's •high penetration and breakout force in tight materials; •fast-cycling hydraulics; •ability to work in poor underfoot conditions; and •mobility in comparison to draglines. This loading method has been successful in Georgia's kaolin mines and now can be applied to other mining operations as well. In the course of a study of the formation of external deposits on tubes in water-tube boilers it became desirable to determine the sulfur dioxide (SO2) and sulfur trioxide (SO3) in the Due gases. Determinations made by the A.S.M.E. method for SO2 and SO3 in gaseous products of combustion did not give accurate results. It was found that minute quantities of copper, present in the flue gases from the coal in use, caused oxidation of sulfite in the absorption bottle and that the carbon dioxide (CO2) in the flue gases caused high values for SO2. The A.S.M.E. test procedure was revised to prevent oxidation of sulfite in the absorption bottle and to allow for the effect of CO2; subsequent analyses of flue gases produced reliable results. The revised procedure is described.

Reefs, exposed rocks, and fast currents made the Hell Gate section of New York's East River a treacherous passage ever since man attempted to sail through the area. As the harbor's importance grew, attempts to improve the channel were made, starting in 1851. This paper discusses the first major organized effort to clear the area, which began in 1869 and culminated in a single large blast in September 1876.

"The revamp of critical process assets that require a significant plant outage (shutdown) presents a unique and demanding set of challenges for plant operators. They are executed in a more complex Brownfield environment, typically with limited working space and often involve unknown conditions or scope. For plant operators, such a project is often a high cost event both in terms of opportunity cost of lost production and the resource cost of labor and materials. It can also be a high risk event in terms safety, environment, and future plant reliability/availability. This impacts current and future performance or Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). In our experience, the sequential nature of the EPCM approach does not provide the proper framework to facilitate the level of coordination, stakeholder cooperation and detailed planning required to adequately address the construction and shutdown complexity of a critical asset revamp projects. This paper proposes a more integrated approach to handling shutdown revamps of critical assets. Its main thesis is to involve the key performing stakeholder groups early in the project lifecycle (engineering team, procurement team, construction team and plant operations) to form an integrated shutdown management team that is focused on ensuring delivered results are aligned with project objectives. In this model, the construction team executing the shutdown/construction is preparing the detailed shutdown/construction planning concurrently with detailed engineering and procurement planning. This allows construction/shutdown requirements to influence engineering and procurement, with the desire to optimize safety, speed, quality and cost. The paper also discusses how to overcome the procurement hurdle in applying such an approach. The outcome of this integrated approach is better planning, coordination, communication and alignment between the project stakeholders, a shutdown/construction driven planning approach that more fully addresses the challenges of these projects and delivered results that are aligned with project objectives."
