Neste trabalho, foi desenvolvido um modelo de elementos finitos para simular o primeiro passe da laminação de tiras a quente de aços C-Mn, durante a etapa de acabamento, via DEFORMTM3D. As dimensões e condições de processo foram obtidas a partir de dados industriais descritos na literatura. Utilizando-se o modelo termomecânico, foram feitas análises de sensibilidade por meio de alterações no fator de atrito e coeficiente de transferência de calor por condução, uma vez que não há um conhecimento preciso dos valores destes parâmetros para o processo simulado. Com isto, foram analisadas as alterações que a mudança destes parâmetros podem causar na carga e temperatura de laminação, perfil de deformação, fração recristalizada e tamanho de grão. O aumento do atrito provoca um aumento na carga de laminação, na homogeneidade do perfil de deformação e menor tamanho de grão. O aumento no coeficiente de transferência de calor, diminui a temperatura superficial da tira, o tamanho de grão e gera um aumento na carga de laminação. Assim, neste estudo foi mostrado a eficácia do modelo em predizer o comportamento do aço no processo de laminação a quente.

The field of industrial minerals is concerned with both sieve size and distribution of sub-sieve particles. A great deal of work has been reported on the techniques designed to provide information of this work. The term sub-sieve is here considered to include particular material that will pass a 325-mesh testing sieve. Plant men require rapid, precise and simple testing techniques that are, if possible, inexpensive with respect to equipment and manpower. A number of particle-size procedures have been developed, based on the Stokes equation for streamline movement of a particle of diam D, moving at velocity V through a liquid of viscosity n. 1 Particles are considered to be rigid, smooth spheres, completely dispersed at low concentration and moving at low velocity through the suspending medium with no slippage between particle and liquid. In particle size determinations the particle moves either from natural gravitational forces or those provided by centrifugal means. The diagram of Fig. 1 shows a spherical particle of density S and diam D moving downward at velocity L/T (or V) through a liquid of density So and viscosity n. This paper describes the inseparable relation between product design, liberation, and metallurgical recovery in the optimisation of the recycling of passenger vehicles. This is illustrated by the use of an optimisation model that uses among others a material combination matrix based on metallurgical process data, which depicts the consequences of the quality of intermediate recycling products on the metallurgical material recovery and final alloy metal quality. Various simulations will illustrate the effect of changes in product design and hence liberation on the recycling of end-of-life vehicles. Although this paper focuses on cars, the discussion is equally valid for any end-of-life product. Calibration of the model will be discussed with reference to experiments carried out in order to study the optimal recovery of aluminium applications used in passenger vehicles.

On the basic of analysis on the amounts and main elements of municipal solid waste of Changsha City, the sanitation landfill, incineration, composting, reclamation and utilization technology of household waste were compared specifically in this paper. Based on the concrete conditions of Changsha City, the paper has proposed a disposal proposal combined with reclamation and landfill of municipal solid waste of Changsha City, and the environmental benefit, social benefit and economical benefit of the prepared processing routes were also analyzed in the paper.

Pilots of the MH-60S helicopter are exposed to continuous whole body vibration (WBV). Pilot fatigue is a growing operational concern due to the increased frequency of extended durations of missions (6-8+hours) in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Endurance aspects of the currently used rotary wing seating systems were not optimized for the longer missions and wide range of pilot anthropometric measurements, which is now typical of naval aviation. The current seating systems were designed primarily to meet crashworthiness requirements, not for the wide range of pilot anthropometry or to mitigate WBV. Albeit, an issue, pilot fatigue and reduced mission effectiveness are also critical concerns. Current Hazard Reports indicated that pain in pilots’ legs and backs begin two to four hours into the flight and increase with time. Mission readiness also decreases with an increase in flight duration due to the constant distraction of pilots shifting in their seats while trying to get comfortable. Froom, et al [2] reported a dose-response relationship between the length of military helicopter flights and back discomfort. He also concluded that this pain is typically dull, over the lower back, and its prevalence and intensity are dependent on the total flight hours of exposure. Methods This study evaluated WBV produced in the pilot seating systems onboard the MH-60S. The purpose of the study was to test and compare the effectiveness of two different seat cushions, the current seat cushion versus an anti-vibration seat cushion. Both seat cushions were measured for acceleration levels averaged over five-minute intervals using a triaxial seat pad accelerometer. The recordings were completed for a 3-hour straight and level flight. A frequency analysis from 0-80 hertz (Hz) was conducted on all acceleration measurements to determine the dominant axis and frequency of the pilots’ vibration exposure. The results were then compared to the applicable Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) established by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) [1] and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 2631.1 [3] to determine the MH-60S pilots’ permissible exposure time for both seat cushions. Results The results of the study showed that for both seat cushions the vibration levels of the z-axis at 16 Hz had the shortest allowable exposure duration, according to the ACGIH TLVs. In the z-axis at 16 Hz, the MH-60S’s current seat cushion’s acceleration levels indicated an exposure time limit of approximately 6 hours, while the anti-vibration seat cushion’s acceleration levels pierced the 8-hour exposure time limit curve. Belle Ayr Mine was established in 1972 as the first large surface coal mine in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. During the mid-1980s, it was eventually out-distanced in productivity by newer mines, and management recognized that the mine must recapitalize its major mining equipment and enhance its workforce flexibility in order to be competitive in the deteriorating market situation. Therefore, state-of-the-art haulage and loading equipment was placed into service, and a 12-hour rotating shift and a technician-based workforce was implemented. Belle Ayr Mine is located 29 km (18 miles) southeast of Gillette, Wyoming, in Campbell County (Figure 1). The mine is a part of AMAX Coal West, Inc., and with its sister mine, Eagle Butte, located 8 km (5 miles) north of Gillette, is a major contributor to the overall coal production of AMAX Coal Industries, Inc., headquartered in Houston, Texas. This paper addresses mine planning, recapitalization initiatives, and innovative workforce changes which propelled this large, surface coal mine to the forefront of productivity in the ever tightening low sulphur coal market.

Field density studies carried out at the Phelps Dodge Chino Mine have found that truck-induced compaction is limited to the upper 2.4 meters (8 feet) of an individual lift. Hydraulic properties of material compacted to field densities were determined in a laboratory setting and saturated flow models were then run, simulating the effect of compacted zones within a stockpile. Modeling shows that compaction can effectively prevent solution flow through large portions of the stockpile, implying that great care must be taken to ensure that ripping is carried out to a full depth of at least 2.4 meters (8 feet) across the entire stockpile to achieve uniform solution flow. Uniform solution flow will result in maximum leach recovery.

"Different hydrometallurgical processes have been studied in order to recover manganese(II) from oxidised minerals such as MnO2 (Vegliò and Toro, 1994). An innovative acid reductive leaching carried out in soft experimental conditions was here considered using agro-industrial wastes containing carbohydrates as reducing agents (Vegliò et al., 1998).The leaching process was investigated from a kinetic and equilibrium point of view in order to optimize the experimental conditions and obtain high purity and concentrated MnSO4 solutions.The overall leaching process (not considering the complex network of intermediate oxidation reactions of the carbohydrates in hot sulphuric acid medium (Vegliò and Toro, 1994)) can be described by the following reaction:24 MnO2 + C12H22O11 + 48 H 24 Mn2+ + 12 CO2 + 35 H2O (1)A Shrinking Core Model (SCM) was modified by a variable activation energy term to take into account both the variable reagent concentrations and the reaction rate change with respect to the manganese dioxide conversion. The influence of the particle size in the kinetic model is discussed with the support of SEM analysis and BET surface measurements before and after leaching.Manganese extraction yield was maximised (170-190 g/L) using appropriate carbohydrates and acid excesses, while impurity concentrations were kept low (Fe<10ppm and Ca<300ppm) pre-treating the ores, using hydroalcoholic leaching medium and different combinations of down-stream processes. In particular precipitation, solvent extraction and adsorption onto active carbon were tested to eliminate Fe and Ca from MnSO4 solutions."

Vasos de pressão são equipamentos empregados nas mais variadas indústrias, sendo responsáveis por significativa parcela do orçamento. Os materiais mais utilizados para a construção de vasos de pressão para a indústria de óleo e gás são as ligas de aço carbono e em alguns casos se justifica o emprego de ligas de aços inoxidáveis. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar as características dos vasos de pressão, materiais de fabricação e o custo de aquisição de vasos de pressão por parte da Petrobras. Para o desenvolvimento foram utilizadas duas ferramentas de processamento de dados: a Lei de acesso à informação que permitiu a criação de uma base de dados, e o Planejamento de experimentos que possibilitou avaliar a influência do tipo de material e outras variáveis sobre o preço do vaso de pressão (variável de resposta). Os resultados estatísticos demonstram que, para as faixas analisadas o comprimento entre tangentes (CET) e o Diâmetro (D) possuem uma influência estatística direta sobre a variável de resposta Preço. Finalizando, o estudo conseguiu conciliar aspectos construtivos com os fatores financeiros, sendo de grande valia para os fabricantes de vasos de pressão.

Le drainage minier acide (DMA) provenant de la circulation des eaux à travers les rejets miniers sulfureux est sans doute le principal problème environnemental auquel est confrontée l?industrie minière. Afin de prévenir les problèmes environnementaux reliés au DMA, on doit restreindre la présence de l?une et/ou de l?autre des principales composantes menant à la production d?acide, soit l?eau, l?air et les sulfures. Pour ce faire, différentes techniques ont été proposées au cours des dernières années, dont la désulfuration environnementale et les couvertures avec effets de barrière capillaire (CEBC). Dans ce papier, on propose d?utiliser ces deux techniques en combinaison. Ainsi, on produirait un rejet désulfuré à l?usine de traitement qui pourrait, par la suite, être utilisé comme matériau pour la couche de rétention d?eau de la CEBC. Dans un premier temps, on présente les résultats d?une étude de laboratoire qui montre qu?il est possible de désulfurer les rejets de concentrateur à l?aide de la flottation non sélective jusqu?à l?obtention d?un résidu non générateur d?acide. Par la suite, des essais en colonne ont permis de démontrer qu?il est possible de limiter la production de DMA d?un résidu sulfureux à l?aide d?une CEBC dont la couche fine est constituée de résidus désulfurés. Des prédictions théoriques estiment même que la présence de sulfures résiduels dans la fraction désulfurée utilisée comme matériau pour la rétention d?eau peut avoir un effet bénéfique en réduisant la migration d?oxygène. En effet, les sulfures contenus dans la couche de rétention d?eau peuvent consommer l?oxygène qui tente de migrer vers le bas et, ainsi, réduire les flux d?oxygène qui atteignent les rejets réactifs.

In the past ten years, the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) has arguably become the key document for tunnel construction. This report not only allocates much of the risk involved with the work, it serves as the basis for bid preparation and is used extensively in resolving disputes during construction. This paper discusses some important issues related to the GBR and presents suggestions for improving these vital reports.

To improve the level of hearing protection by providing workers with an inexpensive, easy-to-use device to check earplug fit. Background Approximately 30 million workers are exposed to hazardous noise on the job, placing them at risk of permanent hearing loss, tinnitus, and other disorders. Although the preferred solution is to eliminate noise through engineering controls or to reduce noise exposure through administrative controls, hearing protectors are critical when noise is unavoidable. Studies of hearing protector users have shown that average protection values in the real world are much lower than the labeled noise reduction ratings determined in laboratories with trained and motivated subjects. Even worse, many hearing pro­tector users get virtually no protection at all because of poor fit. The studies also show that users have a harder time achieving adequate protection levels with earplugs than with earmuffs. It?s difficult for users to tell if earplugs are working well just by looking at them. A more accurate approach is to check how much they block or ?attenuate? noise. Earplugs vary in their attenuation characteristics, with most providing a maximum of 20?35 decibels of noise reduction when worn correctly. Any earplug that?s suitable for use in noisy settings will attenuate noise by at least 15 decibels. Personal fit testing is an effective way to help hearing protector users improve the fit and protection levels of the devices. However, existing fit-testing systems are expensive and unsuitable for use at many industrial worksites.

Radon progeny have been a health and safety concern for miners since the mining of radioactive minerals began. Through the ?nuclear age?, it has become better understood and the regulations have become more robust. Ventilation and control practices have improved, thus reducing miners? exposures. This paper provides an overview of radon in mining, the progress of the regulations, and discusses some of the uranium miner studies that contributed to the knowledge of the pathology of radon.

The leaching behavior of silver and silver oxides in ammonical solutions has been studied. The current study is concerned with an effective recovery of silver from secondary sources such as spent silver batteries. Silver associated with these batteries appears in various forms including metallic silver, argentous oxide, Ag2O and argentic oxide, AgO. The leaching behavior of metallic silver in ammoniacal solution has been studied using an electrochemical mehtod. Oxidants used in this study include hyperchlorite, hydrogen peroxide, bromine and iodine. Results on cyclic polarization and Tafel plots on the silver anode in ammoniacal solutions are presented and the results are discussed. The dissolution rate of metallic silver in ammoniacal solutions is also compared with those of silver oxides.

A one-dimensional wave equation based algorithm for estimation of shaft and toe resistance of driven piles using High Strain Testing (HST) data is presented. The pile is represented by a uniform elastic bar, while the soil around the pile is assumed as a homogenized isotropic medium, and Smith model is adopted to represent soil-pile interaction in the wave equation analysis. In most cases, the displacement of pile particles along pile shaft is greater than recoverable soil deformation (i.e., soil quake in Smith model). Therefore, static shaft resistance could be reasonably assumed to be totally mobilized during pile driving. Smith damping factor is used to account for combined dynamic and rate effect. Force and velocity time histories measured at the pile head are used as input boundary conditions in an analytical solution of the one-dimensional wave equation. As a result, two unknown parameters, static shaft resistance and Smith damping factor, can be incorporated into the one-dimensional wave equation and determined analytically for the time duration prior to the first downward wave reaching the pile toe. Then, soil resistance and Smith damping factor at pile toe can be further determined. The advantage of the proposed analysis technique is that the Smith damping factor and the static soil resistance can be directly determined based on the closed-form solution of the one-dimensional wave equation, which is computationally efficient. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the use of the proposed method to determine the pertinent Smith model constants and the static resistances.

This report discusses the configuration and system deployment for the postdisaster surface seismic system for detecting and locating trapped miners. It analyzes the results of 15 field tests to define a signal model, background noise levels, and subarray performance. A waveform modeling procedure is described and compared with observed waveforms. The resulting similarity indicates that the major factors affecting the signal amplitude, waveform, and spectral character are understood. A model is presented which gives the sig-nal amplitude as a function of source type, source depth, and horizontal off-set between source and receiver. Using this model a curve is presented which gives the range at which a signal will be detected for different signal and noise levels. Finally, and most important relative to the mission of the system, the ability of the system to detect signals on one or more subarrays is put into a probabilistic framework. For a strong source it is almost certain that a subarray directly over the source will detect the signal. After signal processing, it is highly likely that signals will be detected on sufficient subarrays to locate the trapped miner. Location errors have been found to be less than 100 ft in the majority of cases. Techniques have been used that can reduce the location errors to this level even when soil layer variation between subarrays is severe.

The purpose of this study was to assess the adequacy of the cab design and to determine the percentage of musculoskeletal symptoms among workers. A questionnaire was designed to assess demographics, work information, job history, and musculoskeletal symptoms in operators of heavy construction equipment. Information concerning equipment included design of the seat/chair, levers, pedals, bothersome vibration, quality of egress from the equipment, proper preventative maintenance and repairs, and age of the equipment. The body regions that were evaluated included the neck, middle/upper back, low-back, shoulder/upper-arm, elbow/forearm, wrist/hand, hip, knee, and ankle/foot. One hundred and eighty nine operators completed the questionnaire. The results indicate that these workers are at risk for developing musculoskeletal disorders, the need to perform a larger survey to further substantiate the outcome, and the need to quantify risk factors (i.e., whole-body vibration and static sitting postures).

"Introducing cutting-edge development work, which aims to simplify mineral processing flow-sheets, reduce costs and address environmental issues. Over the past four years Innovative Mineral Processing Technologies Pty. Ltd (IMPTEC) Australia have developed a Super-fine Crusher and a Planar Magnetic Separator which offer low cost, wet or dry alternatives to conventional grinding and conventional magnetic separation. Each of these machines has been successfully trialed at pilot scale and are now in the process of transitioning to commercial scale. This paper reports on the progress made in each of these fields. The potential scope for application of super-fine crushing technology as an alternative to grinding is potentially expansive and could include beneficiation of metalliferous ores, precious metal ore processing, hydrometallurgical processing, industrial minerals and coal processing, plastic fillers and ceramics processing as well as processing of cementitious slags and fly-ash. IMPTEC have recently achieved outstanding results at pilot scale with a dry combination of super-fine crushing and planar magnetic separation, which offers an alternative to the wet processing of magnetic iron ores. The dry combination has set new laboratory performance benchmarks when compared with the industry standard wet Davis Tube Tester. The test results have also established a strong evidence base showing that super-fine crushing achieves liberation of value minerals at coarser sizes when compared with grinding. The dry combination of super-fine crushing and planar magnetic separation also addresses environmental issues and completely eliminates grinding. An IMPTEC super-fine crusher is currently undergoing commercial trials, generating ultra-fine products from granulated lead blast furnace slag for use as cement substitutes. The performance of the super-fine crusher on this extreme duty highlights the potential benefits of super-fine crushing over the wide range of industries and applications where conventional grinding is employed.INTRODUCTION Present day mineral processing practices can become anchored in convention, where, inefficient methodologies are recognized and accepted as “best practice” or “industry standard”. Motivated by this challenge, IMPTEC has undertaken the development of radically different and improved methodologies in the fields of fine comminution and magnetic separation. Whilst, crushing is much less energy intensive and generally less capital and maintenance intensive than grinding, the technology has stalled due to the lack of crushing devices, which have the capacity to adapt to fine and ultra-fine duties. Grinding practice advances have been achieved through major increases in machine size and power. However, these advances are also accompanied by major escalations in capital, operating and maintenance costs. The economics of this strategy has become increasingly questionable. A typical example is the viability of low-grade magnetite beneficiation, which can hinge largely on the cost of grinding to fine and ultra-fine liberation sizes."

The particle dynamics of a mixture of coal and zircon system wasstudied in a scaled-down cold model of an industrial kiln. Thefactors investigated in the study were rotational speed (N),zircon-to-coal feed ratio (B), coal particle size (dpc) and the angle of inclination (*) of the kiln. The technique used is the residence time distribution (RTD) method. It was found that rotational speed and angle of inclination are important parameters that affect the residence time of particles in the kiln. A mathematical model for predicting the mean residence time of particles in the rotary kiln was developed. Comparisons with reported models for such systems are discussed.
