Powerful, easy to manipulate, ventilation modeling software is readily available to most mining engineers. Too often when preparing an initial ventilation model, engineers will go overboard in their design, creating a complex model with hundreds of branches. When, in practice, the creation of a less complicated ?to the point? model, containing a few well-constructed branches, would have delivered the same results. In this paper the author will demonstrate, by using actual feasibility report examples, that when designing a ventilation model, engineers should make more use of the K.I.S.S. (?Keep It Simple, Stupid?) Principle. As mining industry consultants we must continue to improve on, and deliver timely and cost-effective results to our customers.

The investigation of the potential of the Webb/Baynes block of the Buller coalfield for anode carbon manufacture has generated much information on the physical beneficiation characteristics of the Buller coals in general. A further 36 drill holes of the block in question and several other samples have been analysed by sink/float analysis, either at a single density or over a range of densities. In addition, many samples have been beneficiated on a laboratory shaking table or by flotation. The ash content can be reduced by a variable factor. The reduction factor of between two and four by sink/float analysts is understandably less for tabling where separation is not perfect. All Buller coals behave similarly, there being greater ash reduction factors for higher ash coals.

Mine fires pose a serious hazard to the health and safety of mine workers. They occur regularly and their effects can be devastating. Objective Provide mine safety personnel, MSHA, and equipment manufacturers with a comprehensive, up-to-date, and well-documented database of metal and nonmetal mine fire incidents in the United States from 1950 to 1984 and perform a statistical analysis of these incidents. The data-base is designed for use by mine engineering and safety personnel to aid in determining especially hazardous practices or conditions.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a resistência à fadiga de duas ligas de NiTi diferentes sob condições de teste controladas por deformação a 25°C por meio de testes de fadiga por flexão rotativa. Além disso, as propriedades mecânicas, térmicas e estruturais dos fios foram caracterizadas por ensaios de DSC, DRX, MEV/EDS e tração. Os resultados revelaram que ambos os materiais são superelásticos à temperatura ambiente e, portanto apresentaram composição basicamente austenítica de sua matriz. Os resultados de ensaio de tração são condizentes com a caracterização térmica e estrutural, pois os materiais apresentam recuperação total de forma após ciclos de carga e descarga em tração. Ambos os materiais são ricos em titânio, um deles apresenta camada de óxido superficial enquanto o outro apresenta acabamento superficial. Apesar das propriedades similares a amostra 1 apresentou média de 77 ciclos até a falha, enquanto a amostra 2 resistiu a 1827 ciclos..

Despite the fact that the New Austrian Tunneling Method; NATM, has been used in the United States for the past 23 years or so, still considerable misconceptions exist in the industry about the nature of the method and its implementation. In the authors’ view its implications are usually not well understood. The paper provides an overview of the highlights of NATM usage over the past two decades to illustrate the point that NATM is now a well-established tunneling method in the U.S.A. Accordingly the thrust of this paper is on the more pragmatic aspects of the NATM technology usage as it concerns the Owners, Designers and the Contractors. Prior to examining the implications of NATM usage from the viewpoints of various stakeholders, it should be helpful to first briefly provide an overview of the history of the method as it was introduced and implemented on several key tunneling projects in the US, over the last 2 plus decades.

As the new millennium approaches, it is appropriate to assess the progress that has been made in mine health and safety, a matter of concern to management, labor and government. One can hardly look at the major events of the last century — from the birth of the US Bureau of Mines through the enactment of the modern health and safety laws — without realizing that the march has been relentless toward eradication of health and safety threats in mining. The progress is spectacular in mine safety and significant in mine health. In looking at the future, it is safe to assume that societal demands will increase for improved health and safety conditions in the workplace. So will the demands for greater technological leaps. The standards will for measuring success and the expectations of progress in creating a safer and healthier mine environment will grow. The possibilities are enormous of meeting these exacting requirements in the 21st century.

Newmont has installed advanced control and online optimization on the dry grinding circuit and both roasters on its Carlin Trend refractory ore treatment plant. Subsequently, Newmont has developed a master plan for institutionalizing advanced control and optimization on all its processing units. Newmont is committed to a program of applying advanced control and optimization from crushing of ore to pouring of gold. This paper describes Newmont's experience with implementing advanced control and optimization and the benefits received. In addition, identification of advanced control and optimization opportunities and their economic justification is discussed.

Recovery of industrially useful metals from various secondary sources is an important issue in Korea whose natural resources are limited and needs in the strategic metals are on the rise. In order to meet such needs, researchers at the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources have launched a number of projects to help the nation to recover various metals from secondary sources. In this study, silver is successfully recovered from spent silver-oxide batteries first by distillation to remove mercury. The distilled residue was next subjected to leaching of silver using nitric acid. The study involves finding optimum conditions to leach silver from the distilled residue and subsequently to recover silver from the leach liquor by chemical precipitation. The chemically precipitated products are then subjected to reduction roasting to recover silver metal.

One of the problems that arises in the early stages of the mine planning before the determination of the mining exploitation method is to predict what will be the recoverable ore reserves in tonnage, grade and metal quantity, if the select ion is based upon block grades. The estimation of these recuperation or recoverable functions can act as an important planning tool in what concerns the appraisal of the consequences of ore-waste discrimination of individual blocks in a selective mining operation. Estimation methods of all these functions are discussed together with cross validation tests using the available information concerning a preliminary drilling campaign accomplished during the exploration stage of an iron orebody located in the North of Portugal (Moncorvo Orebody).

In attempts to correlate mechanical properties with microstructure, it is desirable to determine the effect of ß grain size. Determination of 6 grain size is not a problem where a has precipitated at ß grain boundaries. However, in alloys which have been processed to produce an equiaxed a +ß structure the ß grain size is difficult to determine because ß grain boundaries do not etch. The ß grain size can sometimes be laboriously determined by searching for grains which have some a! outlining the 6 grains. This difficulty of ß grain size determination in equiaxed a + ß alloys can be overcome by heating below the ß transus temperature for a short time and water quenching. Fig. 1 shows the starting equiaxed a + ß structure of the Ti-5.25A1-5.5V-0.9Fe-0.5Cu alloy used in this investigation, and Fig. 2 shows the microstructure of the same sample water-quenched after heating 1 min at 1675"F, which is 25°F below the 0 transus. This paper discusses the author?s work identifying international law norms of consultation with indigenous communities and poses a potentially counterintuitive argument that corporate stakeholders? interactions with indigenous communities may have effects on the content of those norms. The claim is counterintuitive because the international law of pertinence is customary international law, which arises from consistent state practice and opinio juris (a belief by states that they are acting in a way they are legally bound to do so). Customary international law traditionally has no reference to corporate conduct per se. The paper first surveys several sources on developing international law on consultation obligations. Then it references the impact these norms can have on corporate stakeholders in industries like mining. Then, it poses an argument as to an economic ratcheting effect that can occur through various agreements between corporate stakeholders and indigenous communities that then feeds through into international law via several mechanisms. The consequences for mining companies are diverse and include the possibility that conduct by one company can have longer-term implications for the obligations of other companies and, indeed, of states. The effects will differ in the context of different competitive environments and may actually have effects on the economics of different competitive models.

The one free surface blasting of a concrete block was simulated by Discontinuous Deformation Analysis(DDA) method. Comparing the simulated results with the concrete block blasting experiment, the crack growth and the free surface displacement which were simulated by DDA were observed with a high speed camera.

Nuclear power currently produces about 20% of the electricity in the US, with 104 nuclear power plants located in 31 states. The commercial US nuclear industry contributes over $4 billion annually to US workers in salaries and wages. 25,000 new jobs need to be filled in the next 5 years. There are over 30 new power plants under consideration by US utilities. The operating reactors use uranium oxide fuel enriched to about 4% U235 and fission is the process used to generate heat to form steam to drive the turbine generators. Nuclear energy is an important element in the US generation portfolio and represents the largest producer of nearly emission-free electricity. Most, if not all, of the operating plants will secure an extended 20 years of operation or more. The last plant constructed was ordered in 1978. New smaller, modular reactors are under design to provide less expensive, expandable generation options.

METRICATION In order to bring South Africa into line with metric countries the world over and in view of the indisputable advantages of using the comma as a decimal sign, the Metrication Advisory Board has decided to recommend that the comma be used consistently as decimal sign as from April 1, 1971. Numbers consisting of more than three figures are separated by spaces into groups of three to the left and right of the comma, and not by commas, e.g... 2 734 671,512 73 A quantity such as 12,41 kg is read as "twelve comma four one kilograms" and 31,34 km as "thirty-one comma three four kilometres." A motor-car previously described as a 3.8 litre model now becomes a 3,8 litre model. THE BRITISH COUNCIL AWARDS 1972-1973 The British Council invites applications from permanent residents of all races in the Republic of South Africa and South West Africa, for the following awards:- SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships are available to such residents who hold University degrees or comparable professional qualifications. The scholarships are tenable for post-graduate study at Universities and other educational establishments in Britain for the academic year of approximately ten months beginning 1st October 1972. All arrangements will be made by the British Council and the scholarships will include tuition fees, a maintenance allowance, approved travel in Britain, return fares to Britain, a books grant and a clothing grant. The closing date for applications is 31st July, 1971. BURSARIES Bursaries are available to such permanent residents who hold University degrees or who, being already established in their professions or trades, hold other qualifications. The bursaries are tenable at British educational in-institutions or other suitable establishments in Britain for a course of training, study or research lasting not less than two months or more than six. The British Council will arrange full programmes and professional contacts, and the bursaries will include a maintenance grant, a books grant, authorised course fees and certain other expenses. Future climate variability and change will impact on mining operations and their attendant communities. To minimise this impact, early and informed risk management is warranted. However, research into the risks posed by climate to the Australian mining industry has so far been limited. We are conducting a systematic study of the mining life-cycle to identify the main areas of vulnerability and adaptive capacity of operations and communities. This project aims to assess what adaptation activities are currently being undertaken within the mining industry and its communities across Australia and to develop a risk management approach that will aid the adaptation of practices in and around the industry, better assuring the security of people, jobs, revenue and the environment under changed or extreme climate conditions. The Canadian mining industry was recently assessed through a similar study, which found that many mining companies perceive a real risk to mining from climate change in the future, despite few companies being actively involved in managing such risk. At a workshop held by CSIRO involving mining specialists, the most vulnerable stage in the mining process in the Australian context was assessed to be production. In particular, impacts on water and energy supplies and also transport and infrastructure were of high concern. Additionally, heat stress on workers and equipment, changes in groundwater flow and increases in geohazards were also identified as important factors in the short and long term if problematic climate events become more extreme or more frequent. Risks in the planning and post-mine stages were also identified. Based on literature reviews and preliminary discussions with mining experts, here we present an initial assessment of the climate adaptation issues relating to mining and its associated communities and describe our future work plans in this area.

Energy Incorporated has prepared this final report presenting the results obtained from the program for extracting alumina from anthracite culm along with the recovery of energy. This work has been accomplished under the auspices of the U.S. Bureau of Mines with technical coordination through the bureau's Reno, Nevada facility. The objective of this program was to develop a process to recover alumina and energy from Northeastern Pennsylvania anthracite mining waste. The program included Identification of sufficient resources to support a commercial facility, identification of the operating parameters which maximize alumina and energy recovery, the development of a conceptual process design, preparation of material and energy balance(s), and the performance of a system economical analysis. The program was conducted in three major phases. In the first phase the program concentrated on selecting several anthracite culm banks capable of supporting a commercial alumina producing facility. The chosen banks were then sampled and analyzed leading to the selection of two banks which were chosen far testing. The Harry E. and Eckley culm banks were the ones selected. Material from these banks was tested in Energy Incorporated?s Idaho Falls, Idaho testing facility. Parametric testing was accomplished in an eight-inch-diameter fluidized bed test facility. The test program consisted of twelve separate tests. After critical operating parameters were determined, the second phase started: process development in EI's 18-inch fluidized bed test facility. Three material and energy balance tests were completed in this facility. Following these tests a 72-hour demonstration test was performed. The data acquired from these tests were used in the last phase: the process conceptual design and economic analysis. The design basis was a commercial scale facility capable of producing 500,000 tons of alumina per year for 15 years. Based on the test program, It is technically feasible to build and operate such a plant today. The facility would produce, along with the alumina, 81.5 MWe of electricity for outside consumption. A preliminary rate of return indicates that the plant is not feasible with today's economic conditions. An increase in the market price of either the alumina or the electricity is required to provide an attractive rate of return for the facility.

As longwall shields are lowered in preparation for advance, dust from the canopy falls directly into the air stream with the potential of becoming entrained. Historical dust sampling data from the early 1980s shows that shield advance contributed an average of 12 percent to the airborne respirable dust levels found on longwalls in the United States. Data from the 1990s indicates that shield dust liberation had increased to an average of 23 percent. Increased longwall production levels over this time resulted in the need to move a larger number of shields during each shift, while an increase in air velocities on the face was also occurring. These factors combine to suggest that greater quantities of shield dust are being entrained into the face air. A series of controlled laboratory tests were conducted in a test stand simulating shield dust entrainment to evaluate changes in airborne respirable dust levels at different air velocities. Significant differences in respirable dust entrainment were observed. The test facility, test methodology, and dust sampling results will be reviewed and discussed
