Drilled shafts have become an economical foundation choice for bridges in the northeast United States, especially when they can be constructed over water without the use of cofferdams. For the Boscawen-Canterbury Bridge over the Merrimack River in New Hampshire, an unusual design was used to avoid the use of cofferdams and avoid the need for pier caps at the waterline. This design used a pair of integral drilled shaft ? columns to form a bent type of substructure for support. Drilled shafts were 8-foot diameter, about 90 feet deep, with 16-foot long rock sockets. These are integrally constructed with 6-foot diameter reinforced concrete columns extending 37 feet from the waterline to the superstructure. Design load cases focused on lateral loads from ice flows, stream flows, wind and seismic events. Alternative analyses using different methods were made to check the design results. This paper discusses the subsurface conditions, design of the drilled shafts and columns, rebar and joint detailing issues, and construction of the drilled shafts.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers are conducting a cross-sectional survey of equipment noise and worker noise exposures in the mining industry. Surface and underground limestone is one commodity recently surveyed. The sound levels of mining and processing equipment were recorded to identify noise sources. Full-shift worker noise exposures were completed to determine the exposure of various occupations. This paper presents the results of the noise research conducted in both underground and surface limestone mines, detailing the equipment likely to cause worker overexposures, and the occupations experiencing overexposures. Implications for worker noise exposure reduction are also reported.

Different types of lump iron ore-bearing particles were investigated in terms of their raw material properties depending on their behaviour during reduction. To predict the reduction behaviour different types of lump iron ore and pellet brands were characterised by their mineral abundance, texture and pore size. The image processing software VisuMet was developed to semi-automate the evaluation of photomicrographs from polished sections of lumpy iron particles. The results were compared to the standard reducibility test after ISO 4695. The evaluation of lump iron ores is based on the simulation of the transformation of the different iron minerals due to their sequence of reducibility. The progress of the reduction front is simulated and the result is a degradation curve. Pellets were also investigated due to their different pore size distribution. The results indicate that the pore size influences the reducibility in addition to mineral abundance. The evaluation with VisuMet of the lump iron ore and pellet samples correlates with the reducibility provided by the ISO 4695 test. The determination of the mineral abundance by VisuMet is comparable to common point counting with a correlation coefficient of 99.67 per cent.CITATION:Kain-Bückner, B and Mali, H, 2017. Mr Vegter has analysed, in some depth, the approximations made in the treatment of the kinetic data presented in the original by ourselves (ref.1) and has come to the conclusion that ?under the experimental conditions used by Adams and Nicol (1986) the steady-state assumption was inaccurate?. We are acutely aware of the fact that the experimental method adopted does not permit the attainment of a true steady-state in the elution reactor. However, this does not eliminate the attainment of a pseudo steady-state by a suitable choice of the experimental parameters with the accompanying simplification of the analysis of the data with the aim of drawing the reader?s attention to the most important objective of the paper viz. the effect of various operating parameters on the rate of elution of gold.

La unidad de producción polimetálica de Yauliyacu, ubicada en la localidad de Casapalca, Lima, tiene una presa de relaves en el paraje de Chinchan del mismo departamento. Sin embargo, dado que la presa nueva Yauliyacu culminaría su función y que la presa auxiliar Tablachaca no contaba con la suficiente capacidad de almacenaje, Centromin Perú evalúo otras alternativas para la ubicación y construcción de una nueva. De acuerdo al estudio realizado, se encontró que la quebrada de Chinchan era la más adecuada puesto que ofrecía mayor capacidad de producción y se descartó las de Corina y Tablachaca. En este sentido, el presente texto describe las características de la quebrada, el diseño del depósito de Chinchan, su proceso de construcción, la limpieza de fundación, el análisis de la estabilidad física y química, la implementación para mejorar la estabilidad de la presa, la mejora de calidad del aire en la zona del depósito, el programa de inversiones y el plan de cierre del relave.

Milling circuits are known to be difficult to control. In order to address these difficulties, it was decided to develop and test a model predictive controller (MPC) for a milling circuit. A milling simulator was written using Microsoft Visual C++ and used to design and test the MPC controller. Due to the large number of tuning parameters in a controller of this type, an optimizing algorithm was written that automatically tunes the controller. Good, robust control was obtained when the controller was tuned using this algorithm. Control was further improved by combining feedback and feed forward control and by using quadratic programming in the MPC algorithm. The movement of the manipulated variables was reduced by using a novel technique that allows the controlled variable to vary within a specified region around the set point. An optimiser controller was also successfully implemented to control the circuit at its maximum throughput.

Modern shaft kilns in Europe are fully mechanized and burn cement of acceptable quality at 700,000 Btu per bbl and lime at 3.2 million Btu per net ton. Rotary kilns for cement have increased in thermal efficiency by using exit gas heat for preheating incoming raw material and by recovering heat from outgoing clinker in air-quench coolers. The dry process Lepol or ACL kiln has the lowest fuel consumption, 580,000 to 630,000 Btu per bbl, and very low dust loss, about 1 pct weight of clinker. The Holdebank-Gygi system reaches 720,000 Btu per bbl. The calcinator kiln for the wet process consumes 1.1 million Btu per bbl. IN every country economic circumstances prescribe the method used to produce a commodity at lowest cost. In Pennsvlvania a man's wages for working 4 hr buys a ton of coal wholesale; in Germany a laborer must work 40 hr, or ten times as long. In western Europe, therefore, conservation of fuel is of primary importance, and recent practices of burning lime and cement differ from those employed in the United States. "The pursuit of concentrator surveying for purposes of metal accounting or process optimization has not yet connected with the well-published realm of geostatistics. The reality of lognormality in time has seldom been discussed. One publication by Krige, 1962, examined such effects for a gold concentrator in South Africa, towards an information system that would provide feedback to the mining and surveying teams on grade control of ore mined.During present studies which are designing and testing a new survey model, called statistical benchmark surveying, it was found that the distributions of feed, concentrate and tailings bear significant residual signs of the parent lognormality in space. The multiple hosting of paymetals in different mineral species complicates the understanding of these distributions. These features have to be recognized and treated in order to perform appropriate quality control on the diagnostic sampling performed in the pursuit of statistical benchmark surveying.It is shown in this paper that the above two features can actually be used to advantage in the diagnosis of continuous periods of operations data ahead of such surveying, including the estimation of recoverable paymetals in flotation tailings from a graphical method.INTRODUCTIONAssessment of Concentrator PerformanceMilling and flotation, sometimes accompanied by gravity separation, are well-established unit processes, which have traditionally been used to treat ore that has been mined. This is because these processes liberate, then separate, the valuable minerals, which contain paymetals, from host gangue. This is often done by a combination of crushing and grinding processes, or autogenous grinding, to liberate the paymetal minerals, followed by gravity separation and/or flotation, to separate these valuable minerals into a concentrate, or several concentrates. These concentrate(s) have a lower bulk than the parent ore from which they are derived. Further, they contain a high percentage of the valuable minerals. Accordingly, they are more economically treated in subsequent beneficiation processes than the ore from which they were produced."

The feasibility of doping silicon to produce device structres by directly implanting impurity atoms has been demonstrated. Both phosphors and boron ions have been successfully implanted in silicon to produce electrical junctions. Junctions as deep as 1.2 p have been produced by phosphorus ions having energies the order of 80 kev. An electromagnetic separator has been used to controllably produce uniform, large-area implantations for evaluation experimentation. Correlations between junclion depths and ion energies huve been obtained. Orientation effects have been observed and it has been found that the (110) direction is the easy direction for implanting. Monitoring of thermal treatments oj implanted substrates by sheet-resistance measurement indicates a very mild thermal anneal removes most of the damage done during the implantation. These indications are further substantiated by reverse-current measurements of j,inctions Produced by implantation. Electrical characteristics of implanted junctions are compared with those of diffused junctions. We have been interi n the interaction of energetic ions in the III-V groups, in particular boron and phosphorus, with single-crystal silicon to produce type conversion for possible device use. A number of investigators, a few of whom are avies, Kornelson,3 and so forth, have reported on penetration of energetic ions into both amorphous and crystalline solids. While most work has been done with ions of the rare gas and alkali metal groups, some work has been reported by ing, erber,' and others6 in which ions of the 111-V groups have been implanted in single-crystal silicon. A large amount of this work has been done with ion energies in the 100-kev to 1.5-Mev range. An excellent review article has been written by caldin. We have concentrated on ion energies which are in the 10 to 80 kev range, with which over 1500 implanted junctions such as the one shown in Fig. 1 have been produced in silicon substrates with both phosphorus and boron ions. Fig. 1 is a 3-deg angle lap in which the n type area produced by 66 kev P is delineated and the junction is 9500A below the surface. EXPERIMENTAL Implantations reported in this paper were made with the ion source adjusted to produce ion currents in the range of 1 to 2 pa with accelerating voltages varied from 10 to 40 kv. When using doubly charged ions this produced 10 to 80 kev ions. This allowed substrate temperatures to remain below 100°C. Sam- ple movement resulted in beam impingement angle variation of 7 deg from the normal to the substrate surface. Substrate resistivities have been varied through the range of 0.001 to 500 ohm-cm and specimens oriented in three directions, (110), (Ill), and (loo), within 12 deg. RESULTS For the purpose of this paper, discussion of results will be limited to phosphorus implantations with mention of results for boron-implanted silicon. I was confronted with a profound dilemma as an undergraduate engineering student at the University of New South Wales in Australia in 1992. I had been taught that our planetary life-support systems were in a state of alarming decline by an institution that operated as if what the faculty was teaching was irrelevant. Lights were left on in empty overcooled classrooms, recycling bins were nonexistent, lawns were maintained using pesticides and herbicides, diesel trucks spewed fumes as they passed on their way to drop off chlorine-bleached virgin paper. This disconnect was very alarming to me. While it was obvious that universities should play a leading role in teaching and researching sustainability issues, I wondered how it could be possible to make widespread institutional changes to meet the demands of environmental sustainability when it was not even being done in the very university sector where these ideas were being promulgated. If universities would not change, then who can and who will, I wondered? To a growing number of people, the idea of teaching sustainability without demonstrating it is highly problematic. It is also widely believed that the ability of the higher education sector to reform its own practices is an important indicator of humankind?s ability to address the global environmental imperative across all sectors of society. These sentiments have helped fuel what is now referred to as the campus sustainability movement, a movement dedicated to transforming our campuses into living laboratories for the demonstration and practice of environmental sustainability.

During mining, the stress in the coal face varies, and, at the same time, the gas flows from the coal body into the excavation, which will cause the gas pressure to change continuously. Assuming the coal gas content of the coal to be constant, and applying the law of energy conservation, the influence of stress concentration on the gas pressure was analysed. It was found that the stress is proportional to the gas pressure. Finally, as a result of analysis and the law of gas flow, the gas pressure dynamic distribution ahead of tunnelling was modelled, and the mechanism by which blasting induces outburst was explained by making use of the model. This paper outlines the results of a relationship developed during the design and construction of the foundations for the Gallery Towers project in Melbourne. Both the builder and the piling contractor were determined to arrive at a satisfactory foundation solution to the problems encountered at the site. The scope of piling work was to provide load-bearing piles under the building columns, some of which were located within a retention system that also required a piling solution. Geological conditions were variable and challenging. The site area was small and located adjacent to the National Arts Centre in the developed Southbank area, a high density office area. This presented logistical problems in limiting construction traffic on site and also demanding minimal noise and vibration emanating from piling activities. The piling contractor, Vibro-Pile, and the builder, Walter Construction Group, faced the challenges presented with a refreshing cooperative attitude that was beneficial to both companies. Commercial issues rising from design and construction problems were first put apart in order to allow the respective technical department of each company to work with minimum constraints to achieve the most cost effective solution. In the process usual adversarial attitudes resulting in loss of time and money was avoided. A number of issues were addressed successfully at minimum cost and time during this contract. Despite the difficulties encountered, the job was completed on time and with negligible claims for extras, resulting in the development of a strong mutual respect between both companies.

There are several well-known, extensively researched and tested methods of suppressing a coalmine methane and coal dust explosion. The choice of method used is dependent on the legislative requirements of each country, which in turn are influenced by mining conditions in that jurisdiction. For example, seam gas content and the dustiness of the coal will combine to create the hazard, while the physical and chemical properties of the seam might influence the possibility of ignition sources such as frictional ignitions. The mining method and layout will also influence the choice of preventative or proactive suppression devices. The decision as to which method is approved and adopted should be based on currently tested and available technology and the latest research outcomes, and should be subjected to a rigorous risk assessment, since a methane explosion propagating into a coal dust explosion cannot be countenanced.Every new technology must undergo stringent tests and these tests must be certified by accredited research facilities or laboratories. Upon approval, an explosion suppression system or the critical components of such a system should be tested in a more realistic environment. This environment can ideally be found in an operating underground mining section for evaluation purposes. Based on the insight gathered in such an environment, a realistic evaluation of the effectiveness of a potential system can be carried out. The explosion suppression system described in this paper has been tested on numerous occasions at accredited test facilities. The technology described in this paper has been used in various applications in underground coalmines and has been adapted to fulfil and exceed the requirements set out for methods currently in use. "Highmont, a wholly owned subsidiary of Teck Corporation, operates a 25,000 ton/day mine and concentrator located in the Highland Valley of British Columbia. Construction of the plant commenced in the spring of 1979, and production from one grinding line began in late December 1980. The second grinding line began production in March 1980.The ore body consists of two main zones, the east and west pits, containing 134 million tons of ore, averaging 0.26% Cu and 0.27% Mo. Mineralization consists mainly of chalcopyrite (2/3), bornite (1/3), and molybdenite.The concentrator design incorporates an A-B-C grinding circuit (auto mill ball mill - crusher), followed by bulk flotation, copper-moly separation and leaching for moly concentrates. The two grinding and bulk flotation circuits are parallel and independent. Concentrate storage is provided between bulk flotation and copper¬moly separation and also ahead of molybdenite leaching. The plant design has been previously described in some detail. (""THE HIGHMONT CONCENTRATOR"" by C. V. Sibbald, CIMM Bulletin, March 1981).This paper will outline some of the problems associated with the construction, startup and early operation phases of the concentrator. INTRODUCTION The method of heat removal during a casting process strongly influences the crystal morphology of the cast product and hence the metallurgical and mechanical properties of the solidified materials. In this paper, the Ohno Continuous Casting Process (OCC) is described in terms of the casting conditions and the type of structure observed in the cast product. Significant improvements are observed in workability, fatigue strength and corrosion resistance of castings produced by the OCC method, Ohno (1988). Applications of this technique to low melting point nonferrous metals and alloys are discussed. The feasibility of the application of this technology to high melting point materials is outlined. THE OCC PROCESS The OCC process involves delivering liquid metal into a heated mold, the temperature of which is held just above the solidification temperature of the metal to be cast. This is the key point which differentiates the OCC process from the conventional continuous casting method. A schematic illustration of the OCC process is shown in Figure 1. The Formation of a Single Crystal When the mold is heated above the solidification temperature of the metal to be cast, nucleation on the mold surface is prevented and solidification takes place only at the mold exit. The heat is extracted through the product being cast by a cooling device located near the mold outlet. Crystals are formed only at the tip of the dummy bar at the start of casting, and as the dummy bar travels away with a progressively increasing speed from the mold, the position of the solid liquid interface will align with the mold exit, producing a unidirectionally

Historically, linear and lognormal krigings were first created to estimate the in situ mineral resources of blocks. Nonlinear geostatistics and indicator kriging were subsequently developed to evaluate also the portion recovered when applying a cut-off on selective mining units (SMUs) within blocks. In practice these methods are generally based either on the Gaussian model with a transformation generalizing the lognormal case or on the indicators above cut-offs. Very often the indicator approach is simplified by kriging separately each indicator, and when starting from a continuous variable, a practical advantage of the discretization into classes lies in the easy treatment of a zero effect and of the high values. However, a number of so-called isofactorial models have also been developed for a discrete or continuous variable, where the full cokriging of indicators (i.e. disjunctive kriging) simplifies to the separate kriging of factors. Moreover, these models are equipped with a change of support, allowing a consistent estimation of recoverable resources on SMUs. Min-Max Autocorrelation Factors (MAF) analysis of the indicators offers a new approach for indicator modelling. In particular the first factor, the one with the highest spatial continuity, can help in choosing the type of model. For example a monotonic experimental first factor can be used directly as the basis of a discrete diffusion model, unless a continuous diffusion model such as the Gaussian model can be used on the original variable. This approach is illustrated on a uranium deposit mined selectively: estimates of recoverable resources by discrete disjunctive kriging and uniform conditioning in a Gaussian model are compared locally to short-term estimates based on two areas densely drilled.

A clear understanding of iron carburization reaction occurring between molten iron and carbonaceous materials is of great importance in blast furnace, and it is one of the hot spots that ironmaking workers pay close attention to. Although carburization rates between iron and coke have been studied, the factors directly controlling it have not been clearly identified. This study focused on the kinetics analysis of iron carburization reaction. Sulfur content was determined as having positive influence on graphite carburizing reaction rate in the range of 0.02% - 0.06%. The values of apparent activation energy calculated by the experiment are consistent with the existing literature, which in turn proved the reliability of the experimental data.

This study demonstrates the application of HyLogging™ technologies for mineralogical characterisation of different iron ore types throughout the Hamersley Province (Western Australia), including a channel iron deposit (Murchison Metals Ltd) and bedded iron deposits in the Brockman and Marra Mamba Iron Formations (BHP Billiton Ltd).Drill core from these deposits was analysed using CSIRO’s hyperspectral drill core logging systems (HyLogging systems), which are commercially available at the AMDEL and AMMTEC laboratories in Perth (Western Australia), through a leasing agreement. These HyLogging systems provide high resolution photographs at 0.1 mm pixel resolution as well as visible and infrared spectroscopic refl ectance data at 1 cm spatial resolution. The minerals identified include haematite, goethite and its subtypes (ie vitreous and ochreous goethite), AlOH-clays (kaolinite, Al-smectite and white mica), carbonates, gibbsite, chlorite, amphibole and hydrated silica as well as water content. The abundance and composition of these minerals was established from the spectral data and was validated against XRF analyses.The full potential of HyLogging systems in the iron ore industry is only starting to be unveiled, but some major benefits have already been demonstrated:• HyLogging systems can delineate different ore zones by mapping the vitreous and ochreous goethites. This has a potentially large impact in mine planning and operations, as hard, vitreous goethite and soft, powdery, ochreous goethite have different processing characteristics that can affect plant throughput if not carefully managed.• HyLogging mineralogy can also be used to support stratigraphic interpretations of the host, for example in subdividing the Dales Gorge 1 - 4 submembers of the Brockman Iron Formation.• HyLogging can have a potentially signifi cant impact on waste rock characterisation, as many of the waste materials can be identifi ed and quantifi ed with hyperspectral data (eg clay-type,• hydration state).• HyLogging can provide accurate three-dimensional (3D) mineralogy to iron ore companies that will empower them to improve future exploration and resource planning.• Application of high resolution photography to further improve ore deposit domaining is also to be considered.

The energy consumption and recovery of chromium are important economic factors in ferrochrome production. Outokumpu has a lot of experience of the reduction behavior of the sintered pellets in industrial-scale furnaces and also on the grounds of numerous laboratory and pilot-scale investigations. Sintered pellets have shown a superiority over lumpy ore and briquettes made of the same chromite grade. The good performance of the pellets has also resulted in investigations on the reasons for such a performance. In this study, the factors affecting pellet behavior in smelting furnace were investigated. This study is divided into two sections, i.e. the investigations were on the factors affecting solid state reduction and on the factors affecting reduction under melting. These tests were performed by means of thermo gravimetry and by smelting tests. The correlation between the pellet characteristics and reduction behavior was shown and its influence on industrial-scale furnaces was discussed. Factors worth of consideration are for instance, the extent of oxidation during sintering, slag formation and chemistry in respect of molten state reduction, and the grain size of the chromite mineral in the raw material in respect of kinetic reasons (retention time in smelting).
