Possible consequences of continuing internal political unrest and the imposition of foreign sanctions raise concerns about the traditional reliability of the Republic of South Africa as a major world supplier of important minerals. A recent Bureau of Mines' technical report (Open File Report 76-86) examined the impacts of temporary peacetime disruption scenarios for six key materials and mitigating options. Because of South Africa's dominant producer position for these minerals (except for cobalt), expansion of primary production capacity outside of South Africa is not a short term mitigative option. However, prospects of a longer term disruption would likely spur investment in capacity expansion in alternative Market Economy Country supply sources. This report identifies the resources, production costs, and burdens that would be placed on alternative MEC producers of chromium, cobalt, gold, manganese, and platinum-group minerals if South Africa's production were subject to a long term; disruption. When long term supplies from South African deposits are discounted, more than a few years reserves were found only for cobalt and manganese. Even for these two minerals, higher sustained prices would be required to increase manganese production capacity and to support means of cobalt transportation not through South Africa.

THIS IS a progress report on a study of the application of statistical practice to mine and mineral sampling undertaken by the Federal Bureau of Mines to provide sound theoretical and practical data for use of the mineral engineering professions. One of the problems in mine sampling is determining the reliability of the results. For certain types of sampling data (random data) the reliability of the results can be stated mathematically. For other types of data there is no known means of quantitatively expressing reliability. In applying measures of reliability to a set of random data, some knowledge or assumption of the characteristics of the particular data is necessary. In many fields these characteristics are well known. However, in mining, where the data are in assays, these characteristics are not well known.

A study(1) on the sulfuric acid extraction of alumina from some Pennsylvania ferruginous clays indicated that the published electrolytic method(2)(3) seems to be more efficient than the known chemical methods (4-9) for removing iron from the leach liquor. The main disadvantages of the chemical methods are the consumption of excessive amounts of reagents and/or the precipitation of prohibitive amounts of aluminum. In the electrolytic method, iron is deposited on the mercury cathode, while aluminum is not and remains in solution. This method, however, had been handicapped by the lack of an effective and economical way to purify the contaminated mercury cathode.(7)(l0). Described herein is a scheme for cleaning the mercury cathode, and for recycling the clean mercury back into the electrolytic cell. Armed with such an apparatus, the effects of applied potential, temperature, and operation time on the electrolytic separation of iron from aluminum sulfate solutions were determined. For the sake of comparing results, a term, removability, was coined to represent the percentage of iron amalgamated per unit height of electrolyte (cm.), per unit surface area of cathode (cm.2), per unit of operation time (second).

The past decade has witnessed a rapid increase in the number and variety of uses found for internal combustion engines in mining operations. Gasoline engines are now widely used for operating core drills, pumps, compressors, small hoists, switching locomotives, tractors, boats, and other equipment. The heavy-oil engine is employed for operating compressors, generators, shovels, ore-milling machinery, and- in the iron, copper, and coal districts- in connection with that' latest newcomer in modern railroading, the oil-electric locomotive. Each of these applications could well form a subject for a lengthy treatise in itself. This paper, however, will be confined to a discussion of some of the features of internal combustion engines as applied to mine compressing plants and mill drive. Perhaps at no time in the history of mining in Canada has the search for new mines been more vigorously carried on, more old properties rejuvenated, or more remote districts exploited than during the past three years. The mine operator of today has a far wider range of equipment and facilities at his disposal than had the pioneers of Rossland, Cobalt, or Porcupine. Each year now witnesses the hinterland driven farther and farther back as improved forms of transportation, machinery, and methods make possible the exploration of properties once considered too inaccessible to warrant serious attention. Howey, Sherritt-Gordon, Callinan-Flin Flon, Jackson-Manion, Picard Gold Mines, and a number of properties in British Columbia, afford excellent examples of work carried out on an extensive scale miles from a railway, or in comparatively inaccessible mountain regions.

"Hard rock mines move large volumes of material, which can cause the conveyors that are essential to this movement to suffer lots of problems, including carryback, spillage, dust and belt wander. Many of these issues are created at the transfer points where the belts are loaded.This article provides an overview of the latest transfer point systems that incorporate safety and serviceability by design as well as a report on recent projects. One project is the Conveyor B Transfer at the Coeur Rochester silver mine near Lovelock, NV. Here, performance was improved with the installation of belt support cradles, engineered chute walls with external wear liner, and a compact dust collector. A second project is the improvement of belt support idlers and skirtboard sealing in a long loading zone of a conveyor under the concentrator at an Arizona copper mine.The importance of transfer pointsConveyors are essential in mine material handling. Their performance will often make the difference in mine productivity and profitability. A key to conveyor performance is the transfer points where the conveyor belt is loaded and discharges. At these transfer points, many of the problems encountered with the conveyor system are created.The problems that arise at the transfer stations include off-center and segregated loading, mistracking, blockages and plugging. And there are a variety of problems originating with fugitive material — cargo released in the form of carryback, spillage or airborne dust — that are created or exacerbated in the transfer points. These fugitive materials turn into other conveyor-related problems, including shortened component life, unplanned outages for conveyor maintenance, unexpectedly high labor costs for maintenance and cleanup, worker health and safety problems and issues with community relations. This study of the tin-tungsten ore of the Shepherd and Murphy Mine, in central northern Tasmania, was originally undertaken at the request of the Moina Tungsten-Tin Mining Co., N.L., as part of the research programme of the Mineragraphic Investigations Section of the C.S.I.R.O. It is based on the examination of a suite of specimens supplied by the management, supplemented by a more extensive collection and observations made by the author during a short visit to the mine in October, 1956.The Shepherd and Murphy Mine is at Moina, 36 miles S.W. of Devonport and 22 miles from Sheffield, the nearest railway station. It was worked almost· continuously from 1893 to 1919, when a fire destroyed the mill; to that date it had produced concentrates to the value of £141,000. After a long period of idleness, the mine was re-opened by the present company, but it has been announced recently that unfavourable market conditions have again forced closure.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe mine is on a deeply dissected plateau, about 2,500 ft. above sea level; it lies between the Iris and the Forth Rivers, whose valleys are deep gorges cut to about 400 to 600 ft. above sea level. From Moina westwards to the Iris River, a limestone regarded as part of the Gordon River Group, of Ordovician age, conformably overlies a sandstone containing tubicolar casts which are circular in cross section, half an inch in diameter and up to two feet long, and which resemble marine worm burrows (Elliston, 1953).

The work of the metallurgical fundamentals section during the past year, representing active experimental investigation or thermodynamic study, may be summarized as the following problem subjects: 1. Low-temperature specific-heat investigations. 2. Development of a method of concentrating gases. 3. Thermodynamic properties of metallic carbides and nitrides, 4. Production of pure chromium from chromium chlorides. 5. Thermodynamic properties of the hydrates of calcium, sulphate. While this list is not identical, with officially designated problems, due to overlapping of subjects and to new developments within specified problems, presentation upon the basis of this subdivision will best serve to review the work of the section.

Problems caused by water discharge from surface mine ventilation shafts can be significant and are usually unforseen. The discharged water is often hyper-saline or acidic and can cause environmental degradation over a wide radius. It can also lead to recurring power pole fires and primary fan breakdowns. A range of solutions to the water discharge problem has been implemented in many Australian mines. In most cases the solutions have been ad hoc, with the overall cost and effectiveness varying tremendously. This paper reviews and contrasts the practicality and effectiveness of the various available remedial options.

This report describes Bureau of Mines research that led to the design, prototype fabrication, and successful proof-of-concept testing of an improved stench fire-warning system for underground noncoal mines. Stench systems are the most widely used means of warning driers in underground noncoal mines of fires or other emergencies. A stench system alerts miners that an emergency condition exists by injecting an odorant into the mine air. Although stench warning systems have been used successfully for over 60 yr, present systems suffer several serious shortcomings, including odorant toxicity, unreliability of warnings, widely varying stench concentrations, and others. In 1980, the Bureau began a research program to upgrade the stench warning system. The resultant system overcomes the deficiencies of existing systems by substituting tetrahydrothiophene for the commonly used ethyl mercaptan stench odorant, and through the use of a specially designed stench injector. The improved injector reliably meters stench fluid into either ventilation-air or compressed-air streams at a precisely controlled rate. Prototype hardware has been fabricated and proof-of-concept tested under bath laboratory and in-mine conditions.

China is the largest coal producing country in the world. Coal is widely distributed in China and thus the mining conditions are complex and diverse. This paper summarizes the important achievements in the last 20 years in various mining methods including the extra thick seam with large mining height top coal caving, the thick seam with large mining height and top coal caving mining, the steep seam with top coal caving and fully-mechanized mining, the thin seam automated mining, and the backfill mining. At the same time, the rapid advance in the development of mining machinery and manufacturing has also contributed to the advancement of coal mining technology and the great improvement of coal mine safety. The future direction of China?s coal mining is to further improve mine safety as to improve the coal recovery rate, promote the pillar less mining technology, develop high-efficiency backfilling technology, develop steep seam high-efficiency mining technology for seams less than 10m thick, and high recovery mining techniques for extra thick seams, improve the reliability of mining equipment, and strengthen the protection and restoration of surface environments and water resources.

Falls of ground (FOG) still account for around 35 per cent of all fatalities in underground southern African mines. To help reduce FOG, appropriate support technology needs to be implemented, and a mindset and cultural change are required to make a significant change. Discipline plays a major role and needs attention, whilst appropriate first-world support technology is available to assist in the reduction of injuries and the improvement of productivity. Section 54 mine stoppages due to FOG are costly. Appropriate support should reduce these unnecessary stoppages. Coal mining has adapted leading support technologies over the years. Platinum and chrome mines have shown significant moves towards adopting leading and appropriate support technologies, seeing noteworthy changes in injury statistics for the better. In typical conventional underground mining operations, the use of temporary support components offers some protection to workers while the permanent and generally more elaborate support systems are installed or constructed. Nonetheless, FOG continue and still result in injuries to people. The author wishes to explore the options and practicality of making use of new-generation support products and technology to provide not only safer support operations, but to also enhance productivity at the working faces. This paper will examine the use of appropriate support technology as a means to making the working stope or development end a safer and more productive workplace.

"The theoretical basis of ideal smelting reduction using coal as reductant in a process employing closed loop forced-circulation of hot metal is outlined. In the proposed process, an extensive area of relatively slag-free hot metal is available as a heat sink for absorbing the large amount of heat produced by complete combustion of CO within the furnace. Any slag that is formed within the oxidizing arm of the furnace loop is quickly swept away as a thin floating layer by the bulk movement of hot metal which is induced positively by forced melt circulation and sustained by causing the hot metal and the thin slag layer to overflow into a lower level hearth in which coal is carbonised and dissolved directly into the circulating melt.The proposed process is shown to offer very substantial cost savings over all other direct smelting technology. This is mainly because of its inherently low capital cost and its high energy efficiency. Furthermore, the favourable economics are not reliant on fuel gas credits as all the process gas is combusted within the reactor itself.IntroductionMetallurgical processes in the year 2000 will be compromise solutions to the metallurgical problems that already exist today. It is common knowledge that the mineralogical complexity of certain polymetallic sulphides, for example, precludes high degrees of separation and recovery by conventional mineral beneficiation. steps are therefore being taken towards the development of a truly polymetallic smelting process which will produce simultaneously zinc lead and copper as, metals from complex ores without prior beneficiation(l). In the ferrous extraction industry, the shortcomings of the highly efficient modern blast' furnace are well known and world-wide there is considerable effort being directed towards coal-based ironmaking without the requirement of metallurgical coke as a process intermediate. Lightweight aggregates have become increasingly important to the construction industry. From 1953 to 1960, the quantity of the aggregates used in concrete block, precast and prestressed concrete, and monolithic structures increased about 92 percent. The present study was conducted in Bureau of Mines Area IV which encompasses the South-Central States of Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. This is an administrative area and does not delimit a market area or imply an economic unit. Because of the increasing importance of metropolitan areas in evaluating economic growth, significant data showing relationships between growth of the metropolitan areas and the lightweight aggregate industry are included.

Cordilleran metamorphic core complexes in the southwestern United States are areas where middle to late Tertiary low-angle normal faulting has uncovered rocks that were at temperatures sufficient for mylonitization during the early part of Tertiary extensional faulting. Large-displacement low-angle normal faults that separate upper-and lower-plate rocks in metamorphic core complexes are termed detachment faults. The significance of Tertiary detachment faulting in the Basin and Range Province has only become apparent in the past 6-8 years, and the association of mineral deposits with detachment faults has only been recognized in the past few years as well. Crystalline rocks below detachment faults have typically undergone chloritic alteration and brecciation over a distance of a few to a few hundred meters below the fault surface (Fig. 1). Chloritic alteration and brecciation overprinted mylonitic fabrics formed during earlier ductile shearing along the down-dip projection of detachment faults. Rocks that underwent pre-Tertiary ductile deformation and prograde metamorphism were subjected, in rapid succession, to middle to late Tertiary mylonitization, brecciation and chloritic alteration, microbrecciation immediately adjacent to the fault, and subaerial exposure. Lower-plate rocks thus experienced rapid decompression and cooling as a result of tectonic denudation and isostatic uplift (Wernicke, 1981; Davis, 1983; Davis et al., 1986).

For the purpose of procuring data that could be used in estimating the value of the briquetting process as applied to American fuels, the United States Geological Survey, in cooperation with other interests, began in 1904, at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, certain experiments involving the production and use of bituminous-coal briquets. It installed at St. Louis, and later at Norfolk, machines for the manufacture of such briquets, and the output of these machines has been tested in locomotive service on several different railroads in comparison with natural fuels. An elaborate and carefully executed series of tests involving the use of natural coals and of briquets made from the same coal, previously crushed, was carried out on a locomotive mounted at the testing plant of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company at Altoona, Pa.; and some preliminary experiments involving the use of briquets in marine service were made in connection with one of the Government's torpedo boats. A description of these tests is presented herewith. The results sustain the following general conelusions: 1. The briquets made on the Government's machines have well withstood exposure to the weather. and have suffered but little deterioration from handling. 2. In all classes of service involved by the experiments, the use of briquets in the place of natural coal appears to have increased the evaporative efficiency of the boilers tested. 3. The smoke produced has in no test been more dense with the briquets than with coal; on the contrary, in most tests the smoke density is said to have been less when briquets were used. 4. The use of briquets increases the facility with which an even fire over the whole area of the grate may be maintained.

A literature search and survey were prepared on the technology of surface hydraulic mining, with particular reference to its possible use in the United States forstripping overburden from surface coal mines. Extensive use was made of Russian references which were translated into English. The advantages and disadvantages of hydraulic mining and hydrotransport are identified as well as criteria for selecting potential applications. At present, the major U.S. application is in the phosphate industry of Florida and North Carolina. Potential locations for hydraulic stripping of overburden from coal seams are identified in the states of Alaska, Illinois, Montana, Washington and Wyoming. Other potential applications include the hydraulic mining of peat in Minnesota, and the stripping of overburden from lignite in Texas, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. Further research is recommended, particularly on the subject of dewatering of fine clay slimes to avoid water pollution and to permit rapid reclamation of mined areas.
