Planning for a project does not start with the announcement of the approval for a project. Planning actually begins when the project is only a prospect and it involves the years of experience of many people because their expertise influences the final decisions. In partial anticipation of the Pinto Valley project, as well as a search for improvement in the Copper Cities operation, two projects were undertaken. The first project was to substitute one 26" cyclone for three 20? cyclones in the single stage grinding circuit. The second project was to replace the Hunt air flotation cells with 300 cubic foot mechanical cells. The 300 cubic foot cells were just being introduced, consequently two types of cells were selected for testing. The results from both projects influenced the decisions on equipment for the Pinto Valley project.

Stibnite is 76 miles east of Cascade, Idaho, which is 78 miles due north of Boise. The altitude at Stibnite is 6,500 feet, and between Cascade and Stibnite the Forest Service road crosses two summits - Big Creek at 6,800 feet and Warm Lake at 7,300 feet. The ownership of most of the Meadow Creek group of 190 claims, which is optioned by the Bradley Mining Co from the United Mercury Mines Co. may be traced back from their consolidation by the United Mercury Co. through ownership by prospectors and small promotional companies to the discovery of the Thunder Mountain district in 1900 by the Caswell brothers.

Toxic fumes generated during shot firing under actual mining conditions were measured. Eight shots with Gelodyn-2X and seven shots with Tovex-100 4VT were monitored. Average CO values for Gelodyn-2X and Tovex-100 4VT were 0.20 ft3/lb and 0.09 ft3/lb, respectively. Average N0x values for Gelodyn-2X and Tovex-100 4VT were 0.049 ft3/lb and 0.026 ft3/lb, respectively. The results obtained with these in-mine tests will be used by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the development of a large chamber method of measuring fumes from shotfiring of explosives.

There are many sources of gas in underground mines including development and production blasting, strata gases, spontaneous combustion, diesel equipment, chemicals used for a wide range of functions, welding activities and fires.It is only in relatively recent times that electronic gas monitors (or detectors) have become both safe and affordable for routine use.In modern mines, gas monitors should be in daily use by the ventilation department as well as blasting re-entry (or clearance) crews, and are often used by drilling crews, shift supervisors, hygienists and mine rescue or fire fighting crews.When first released, electronic gas monitors needed to be sent off-site periodically for calibration at a suitable accredited laboratory. Between calibrations, their accuracy was unknown. More recently, ‘bump testing’ and field calibration has become possible on the mine site, improving both reliability and safety as well as reducing the total number of gas monitors that need to be in use.There has been almost an overwhelming increase in the number and sophistication of gas monitor features in recent years. This paper reports on a case study into the key criteria that ventilation practitioners should be aware of with respect to the specification and selection of the most recent gas monitoring systems, and recommends good practice for site-based operation and calibration.CITATION:Brake, D J, 2015. The Northern Baikal Ni-Cu province is located in Buryatia, south-east Siberia, and geologically is part of the Baikal-Muya volcano-plutonic belt. It is known for numerous PGE-Ni-Cu-bearing mafic-ultramafic intrusions of Neoproterozoic age formed in various geodynamic settings. All these deposits can be regarded as a single Ni-Cu ore cluster located near the Kholodninskoe Pb-Zn deposit, which is ready for mining. In addition, there are less studied, small dyke-like bodies with sulfide mineralisation that formed in a rift setting and may be enriched in Ni, Cu and PGE. Individually, the known bodies are of poor commercial value by their resources, but their close spatial association (<30 km) may make these PGE-Ni-Cu deposits economic in the future. This extended abstract seeks to provide a geological framework of the North Baikal Ni-Cu-PGE province, specifically at the north-eastern Synnyr rift hosting numerous small subvolcanic bodies with Ni-Cu sulfide mineralisation. High-sulphidation (HS) gold, silver and/or copper deposits are generated in both the epithermal and the upper parts of the underlying porphyry environments over vertical intervals of up to 2 km. The HS deposits are generated in advanced argillic lithocaps, which are products of the absorption of acidic magmatic volatiles by voluminous groundwater systems. Mineralisation styles in HS systems reflect depth of formation as well as the interplay between structural, lithological and hydrothermal parameters. The deep parts of HS systems, at depths of >1000 m, are typified by disseminated copper¦gold mineralisation comprising digenite, chalcocite and covellite in pervasive advanced argillic as well as underlying sericitic alteration. In highly telescoped systems, such mineralisation may overprint porphyry stocks and associated quartz-veinlet stockworks. Intermediate levels of HS systems commonly contain fault-controlled copper-gold mineralisation, typically as enargite in bodies of vuggy residual quartz, silicification and/or massive pyritic sulphide. The shallow parts of HS systems, at depths of The exploration focus is on four principal HS mineralisation styles:copper (eg Chuquicamata, Monywa) or copper-gold (Wafi) in the deep porphyry-hosted parts of systems preferably, in the case of the latter, where supergene oxidation is limited and, hence, flotation may be used for metal recovery; copper¦gold-bearing replacement mantos and pipes hosted by carbonate wallrocks in the deep parts of systems (eg Bisbee); high-grade gold in late-stage veins or hydrothermal breccias that overprint the intermediate to shallow levels of systems (eg El Indio, Goldfield); and large, bulk-mineable gold deposits in the shallow parts of systems that were subjected to supergene oxidation, thereby permitting heap-leach treatment (eg Yanacocha, Pierina). To these preferred HS styles may be added the low-sulphidation vein or disseminated gold¦silver mineralisation that is commonplace alongside many HS systems (eg Victoria at Lepanto).

O baixo custo, a biodegradabilidade e a redução do peso especifico torna a utilização desse tipo de compósito bastante atrativa. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o desempenho da fibra de sisal como reforço do policarbonato visando uso utilização militar, especialmente em proteção balística. Antes da confecção dos corpos de prova, foi realizada a redução no tamanho de partícula do policarbonato e da fibra de sisal através de um moinho de facas, posteriormente dos corpos foram submetidos aos ensaios de tração e flexão.

Mill length was the primary variable investigated in an autogenous pilot mill circuit. The 5-1/2' diameter mill had both pebble ports and 1/2" wide slotted grates. The plus 1/2" mill product was crushed in a cone crusher and returned to the mill feed along with the minus 1/2" plus 4 or 6 mesh fraction. Tests were run with a short mill, inside length of 26-3/8", or diameter-to-length ratio of 2.50 to 1. The same mill was then lengthened to 48-3/8", diameter-to-length ratio of 1.36 to 1. The effect of mill length on circuit product characteristics was studied. Results show that (1) circuit throughput or grinding rate is lower per foot of mill length in the longer mill, (2) the long mill product is finer than the short mill product, and (3) KWH per ton of circuit product is slightly higher with the longer mill; however, KWH per ton of minus 200 mesh material (finer fraction) produced is essentially the same in the long mill as the short mill, It is not known whether the relationships found for the pilot mill are valid for commercial size mills.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo, determinar a influência da concentração de sólidos em polpas de rejeitos denominados de “lamas” no desempenho do espessamento e a determinação da concentração de sólidos ótima para atingir o melhor desempenho do espessador.

A major challenge in managing coal seam gas (CSG) water is predicting how much water will be produced as the industry develops. Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd (KCB) was commissioned by the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM) to develop a tool to forecast where, when and how much CSG water will be produced in the Surat and Southern Bowen Basins under various industry expansion scenarios.The water production tool (WPT) uses the Theis equation, a non-equilibrium groundwater flow equation that accounts for the effect of pumping time on well yield in confined aquifers, to predict water production volumes. Where multiple pumping wells are in close proximity, the required pumping rates for coal seam depressurisation are reduced. Therefore, pumping effects are projected spatially to assess interference effects between wells. Water production is then upscaled to the projected scale of the CSG industry within the Surat and Southern Bowen Basins.Two modifications were made to address the dual phase nature of CSG extraction (a transmissivity reduction factor) and the impact of weathering at the eastern margin of the Surat Basin (a ænear edge effectÆ factor). These factors modify relevant hydrogeological parameters in a consistent and defensible manner to more closely match observed water production.The WPT was verified by comparing results to equivalent Theis equation calculations and to type curves provided by CSG proponents. Calibration was achieved by varying the spatial distribution and intensity of the near edge effect factor in conjunction with a chi-squared analysis of residuals.The tool, which is now being maintained and further developed by the Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry (CWiMI), was built to balance numerical complexity against relative flexibility and simulation speed. The result is a tool that can produce statistically relevant results of prescribed scenarios to plan water handling and treatment requirements in discrete zones of operation.CITATION:Strand, R, Reading, L and Keir, G, 2013. The Shagou deposit is located along NE-trending faults within the high-grade metamorphic basement of the Xiong’er Terrane in the Qinling orogenic belt. It is a large Ag-Pb-Zn deposit hosted in the Taihua Supergroup and has proven reserves of 1.54 Mt of ore with grades of 767 g/t Ag, 13.24 per cent Pb and 4.31 per cent Zn. The hydrothermal ore-forming process can be divided into early quartz-pyrite, middle quartz-polymetallic sulfides and late quartz-carbonate stages. Four types of fluid inclusions (ie pure carbonic, carbonic, pure aqueous and aqueous) can be distinguished in quartz. Fluid inclusion, hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur isotope systematics indicate that the ore-forming fluids are initially deeply sourced metamorphic water with meteoric water gradually mixed in the later stages. Sulfur isotope data show that the ore-forming fluids originated from both the Taihua Supergroup and the sedimentary successions of the Guandaokou and Luanchuan Groups (CSC) located to the south of the Machaoying Fault. A genetic model of the Shagou deposit is proposed as follows: CSC subducted northward along the Machaoying Fault beneath the Xiong’er Terrane during the Mesozoic collision between the North China Craton and South China Block. Subsequent dehydration resulted in the devolatilisation of fluids rich in CO2. These fluids migrated upwards, reacted with the Taihua Supergroup and formed the Shagou deposit.CITATION:Han, J-S, Yao, J-M and Chen, H, 2015. A Simulation Study on Two-Stage Grinding with High-Pressure Roller Mills By the application of high-pressure roller mill (HPRM) in the field of mineral processing, computer simulation can be used to predict overall performance of a grinding circuit based on data obtained from HPRM comminution test in pilot scale or industrial scale. Using the model developed by Klymowsky and Liu for HPRM comminution and an extended Plitt's model for classification, steady-state of a closed circuit grinding can be calculated by means of a virtual locked-cycle-test conducted on computer. This paper presents the result of a simulation study on two-stage grinding with HPRM as the comminution device. The emphasis is put on the influences of circuit-configuration and way of recirculating classifier's coarse-product on the overall circuit performance. The results show that two-stage grinding with HPRM has its merit and flexibility in meeting demands of various grinding tasks in mineral processing.

A computer simulation of the automatic control of continuous mining machines has been prepared, similar to previous simulations of longwall mining systems and coal thickness sensors. The simulation allows for programmed variation of the horizon detection method, the azimuthal guidance system, the type and configuration of the miner, varying hardness in the unmined face material (leading to varying error in the machine heading), and the miner's cutting cycle. It simulates control of the miner in three axes. Use of the simulator makes it possible to anticipate problems arising from the complex character of underground mining, which include unpredictable multi-pass coupling and unpredictable variation in geological conditions.

Jute fiber reinforced polymer composites are among the most investigated and applied natural composites. In this past decade the mechanical properties of these composites has been assessed for various types of test conditions. However, the reported results correspond mainly to short-cut jute fiber composites, which do not present the highest mechanical strength as compared to continuous fibers of the same kind. In order to complement these results, the present work evaluated the mechanical behavior, by means of flexural tests, of polyester matrix composites reinforced with continuous jute fibers. Bend tests were conducted in standard specimens with up to 40% of jute. Fracture analysis by SEM displayed the rupture mechanisms. The results showed an improvement in some flexural properties with incorporation of jute fiber. However, a low fiber/matrix interfacial stress was responsible for limitation in the values attained by some properties.

The paper examines three types of polar zoning of ore-forming and associated elements that can be detected from geochemical data. Polar zoning is mapped in the form of geochemical ore systems of various ranks. Various types of polar zoning can be found in some systems, which present a general geochemical model of the ore object. The genetic basis of zoning is examined from the perspective of the conception of geoelectrochemical redistribution of matter, including ore-forming elements. The volume of the geochemical ore system may be used in the prognosis of resources for every rank.

Measurement while drilling (MWD) is a subsurface exploration technique associated with real-time and continuous monitoring and recording of drilling data during the drilling process. This technique can be used for underground investigations to differentiate ground strata, detect the presence of fractures and voids, and evaluate geological features and mechanical properties of geomaterial. When MWD is used for geotechnical investigations, it can improve site characterization, identify variable conditions, improve design and construction, lead to shorter project delivery times, reduce the cost and risks associated with limited subsurface data and geotechnical uncertainties, and maximum return-on-investment. Given these benefits, MWD is gaining attention among transportation agencies and the geotechnical industry. Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA’s) innovation deployment program “Every Day Counts (EDC-5)” includes the implementation of Advanced Geotechnical Methods in Exploration (A-GaME), which aims to implement effective, underutilized subsurface exploration methods, including MWD, in U.S. practice. This paper provides an overview of the MWD technology for geotechnical site investigations and presents a case history where MWD was employed to design deep foundation for the construction of a building in Massachusetts. The advantages of this technology for risk reduction and project cost and time saving are also discussed.

The separation of liquids from granular materials has been widely studied by a number of: investigators over a period of years in an effort to more fully understand the physical phenomenon which occurs. Liquid may be removed from solids, or partially removed, by gravity separation, mechanical separation' or heat drying. Mechanical separation is advantageous when compared to heat drying principally from a cost saving standpoint and also on certain materials which are heat sensitive. It is realized however that mechanical separation of liquids has certain practical limitations. In order to evaluate the efficiency of mechanical separation and predict the extent of, liquid removal, it is first necessary to study the forces which hold the liquid to the solids. From a very practical observation using gravity drainage, it is soon obvious that a pile of coarse solids will drain faster and retain less liquid than a pile of finely divided solids of the same material. For commercial operations it is important to estimate the residual liquid which will remain after a mechanical separation. Batel (1) explored the various quantities of liquid present in the interstices of the bulk granular material. From his work and other authors which he has correlated in one of his recent papers, various formulas are now available which permit an empirical relationship to be developed showing residual moisture versus mechanical separating forces.

FEATURES of the second fall meeting of the Petroleum Division for 1941, held at the Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles, Oct. 29-30, were the forum on the Paloma Plan on Thursday after- noon, the large attendance from east of the Rockies, and the dinner on Wednesday evening sponsored by the Southern California Section and at which President Suman spoke on the strategic minerals and metals situation. The attendance was large and the technical fare uniformly good ; the presiding officers had the proceedings well in hand at all times and kept things humming. Some- times it was necessary to taper off the discussion because of pressure on time. All this was due to careful groundwork before the respective sessions. These presiding officers deserve citation: L. W. Huebel, Howard Pyle, E. K. Parks, Carlton Beal, E. G. Trostel. R. W. French, Jr., John Dodge, and H. N. Marsh. The Los Angeles local commit- tees and the Southern California Section deserve much credit for the arrangements, which were recognized by suitable resolutions at the end of the meeting.

Though the Peirce Smith (P-S) converter is a traditional type of furnace, continuous improvement in its mechanical and electrical design is still Kumera's approach. Efforts are made particularly on the following aspects: converter head shape for easy fabrication and structural strengthening, oxidation air swivel joint for low pressure drop and low noise level, wind box for even air distribution to tuyeres, drive unit and its control for reliable and handy operation. These improvements have successfully been applied in recent P-S converter deliveries.
