During operation of tailings impoundments, water is lost through decanting, evaporation and seepage. Techniques have been developed to regulate or control each of these components. Collectively implemented, these techniques form the basis of tailings impoundment management. Regulation of the rate and level of decanting influences the size of a free water pond, and, thereby, the amount of evaporation and seepage, which are both area-dependent. Conversely, the encouragement of seepage and/or evaporation could also be used to reduce decanting requirements. Management of one of the components of a tailings impoundment's water balance is reflected in changes in the other components. The seepage component has the greatest potential impact on the environment, and consequently requires the closest scrutiny. Water percolating through tailings backfill transports heavy metals and other dissolved solids from the impoundment into the local groundwater regime. Depending on the seepage volume and concentration of contaminants, seepage from impoundments could exceed environmentally tolerable limits. Once mobilized, seepage-borne pollution is much more difficult to treat, mainly because of the problems in collecting the diffusive transportation medium. Pollution abatement measures relative to tailings impoundment seepage depend on seepage prevention or reduction. Seepage control measures include constructing barriers to flow, pump-back systems of interception and restricting the supply of water available for seepage.

The current suite of bulk mining explosives has been available to the industry for over 20 years. The flexibility and performance of ammonium nitrate based emulsion blend explosives were accepted by the mining industry in the early 1980s. These water resistant explosives rapidly displaced the water gels and slurries developed during the previous two decades. However, since the 1980s there has been no equivalent step change to the basic formulation or application of bulk explosives, although there has been a continuous process of refinement with respect to stability, handling characteristics and most significantly, cost. In the 1980s explosives supply contracts were awarded based on technical evaluations, usually accompanied by field trials. Technical personnel from both mining companies and explosives suppliers dominated the negotiations and there was a strong focus on explosive energy and blasting requirements. Today, explosives from alternative suppliers are difficult to differentiate on the basis of energy so the focus has shifted to aspects of service and price û bulk mining explosives are now largely treated as a commodity and the negotiations are dominated by commercial personnel. Commercial pressures from large mining companies have seen a substantial reduction in the real price of explosives. However, this has come at a cost. In order to reduce manufacturing costs, emulsion formulations have changed. In general they are not only cheaper, but also less energetic. Powder factors have had to increase to achieve the same blasting results, especially in hard ground. It is debatable whether the mining companies have achieved all of the economies they were seeking. This paper discusses these issues and argues that the mining industry would benefit from taking a more technically driven approach to meeting their blasting requirements. Recent trends towards more open contracts between the mining companies and their suppliers can be extended to explosives. To achieve this, mining companies will need to acquire sufficient technical knowledge to take a more pro-active approach to specify the characteristics of the explosives required to maximise the economic performance of their operations.

Com o avanço do conceito de sustentabilidade e as novas legislações ambientais, percebemos um crescente aumento da responsabilidade ambiental. As empresas cada vez mais investem em coletas seletivas, tratamento dos resíduos, etc., buscando minimizar os impactos ambientais, preservar os recursos naturais e assegurar a sustentabilidade. Tendo como objetivo apresentar uma solução integrada para a reciclagem e reaproveitamento dos resíduos refratários após o uso. Este trabalho propôs a produção de três classes de argamassas secas e úmidas através da utilização de reciclados. Foram realizadas quatro etapas (identificação visual das matérias-primas, cominuição, formulação/produção e acompanhamento durante a estocagem). Procurando avaliar o potencial dos reciclados o acompanhamento será realizado através da variação reológica e da determinação da força ligante após a fabricação e durante a estocagem (período de 12 meses). Os resultados evidenciaram que há potencial de reaproveitamento dos reciclados tanto na produção de argamassas secas e quanto úmidas sem que ocorra perda de suas propriedades reológicas, químicas e termo-mecânicas.

T HE position of each hole of any series of holes was carefully located by the surveyor, plotted in plan and elevation, and numbers assigned to them. The second series was staggered halfway between the first and so on for each succeeding series. Two and a, half to three months was frequently required to grout a series of holes calculated to insure safety for sinking a distance of 10 meters or say 33 ft. Naturally the initial operation called for drilling and grouting two series of holes but thereafter each sinking campaign required only one series of holes as shown in Fig. 8. The pump handling about 75 gal. per minute corresponds to 46 tons of grout or 6 tons cement delivered as a fair over-all average for the 24 hours. Thus 600 to 800 tons of cement was used for a single section of 33 ft. depth of shaft. One campaign used nearly 1100 tons of cement. Some holes were effectually sealed with as low as 30 tons, while many required 60, and some 80 to 90 tons.

The behaviour of cobalt during processing of nickel raw material is analysed within the Ni-Co-Fe-S-O-SiO2 system using the computer model. For this purpose the thermodynamic parameters for "three-suffix" Margules's equations in Co-Fe-S and Co-Fe¬Ni-O-S1O2 systems were computed! Phase and iso-activity diagrams for Co-Fe-S system, and phase diagrams for the systems Co-O, Co-Fe-O, Co-Ni-O, C-oO=SiO2 and Co-Fe-O¬SiO2 are calculated using the developed computer programs and identified parameters. The diagrams are used to analyze cobalt behaviour at smelting and converting.

The oxidation of structural materials at high temperatures in gas-cooled systems can be greatly retarded by the addition of small amounts of hydrogen to the inert coolant. In experimental equipment for gasifying coal with heat transferred by helium, the oxidation of graphite and metals (molybdenum, tungsten, and certain stainless steels) by trace impurities in the coolant helium was virtually eliminated by adding 0.1 to 1.0 percent hydrogen. The reaction of hydrogen with praphite does not preclude its use to retard oxidation; at 2,400° F. only 0.2 pound of graphite per square foot per year is lost for each percent of hydrogen in the helium. The addition of hydrogen appeared to prevent the mass transfer of carbon often associated with oxidation of graphite, without causing noticeable embrittlement of stainless steels and molybdenum or other damaging effects. This method has been tested in precision gas-recycle systems and applied successfully for more than a year in a pilot-scale unit operating at 250 pounds per square inch gage and 2,400° F. It is now used routinely and can be applied to many gas-cooled systems operating at high temperatures.

The effects of coal cleaning, coal combustion and flue gas particulate removal systems on the partitioning of 12 trace elements were investigated. This study was prepared to help document the fate of trace elements in modern coal preparation plants and coal-fired utility boilers. The coal cleaning data were obtained from several coal preparation plant operations. The CONSOL 1. 5 MM Btu/hr pilot combustion and electrostatic precipitator (particulate removal system) test facility was used to develop the combustion systems data. A comparison with the very limited amount of published data from utility boilers is presented.

Optimized Operator Compartment layouts based on previous Bureau of Mines activities in standardization and optimization of controls were designed and installed in three operating vehicles. Two National Mine Service 48A-36 TorKars were modified in production prior to delivery to the Quarto Mining Company. An Elkhorn AR-4 scoop owned by Adanac Coal Company was modified in a local rebuild shop. The modified vehicles were then evaluated underground under normal production conditions for a 60 day period. Vehicle operators and management appear well satisfied with the compartment modifications.

The old mine workings on four barite-fluorite veins of the Lake Ainslie district, Nova Scotia, were opened recently and channel sampled. The samples were then forwarded to the Ore Dressing Laboratories, Bureau of Mines, Ottawa, for chemical analyses. Following the analyses, the sample rejects were combined to form bulk samples, representing ore from each vein, for small-scale batch test work. Tonnage samples from the veins, for pilot mill testing, were submitted when requested by the Bureau. The results of the analyses on the channel samples showed that there are two grades of ore in the di strict, represented, for test purposes, by the Trout River vein and Johnson vein ores. Small-scale and pilot-plant test work was undertaken on both these ores. The Trout River ore is amenable co concentration but, because of the high-barite-co-fluorite-co-calcite ratio, a fluorite concentrate was not obtainable from the Johnson vein ore as received. However, Johnson ore blended in a 1 :1 ratio with Trout River ore gave a mill feed that was readily concentrated. The test work on these ores showed that the following concentrates are obtainable : (a) A barite concentrate, with a recovery of 85 to 95 per cent of the available barite, analysing 93 co 96 per cent BaS04, 4 co 6 per cent CaF,, and 0.5 co 2 per cent CaCO3. (b) A fluorite concentrate, with a recovery of 80 co 85 per cent of the available fluorite, analysing 94 to 97 per cent CaF, , 1 to 3 per cent BaSO., and 1 to 3 per cent CaCO3

"Less than 20,000 years ago, the last of the glaciers retreated from the Chicago region. They left behind sheets of glacial clay till underlain by dense, over-consolidated till (“hardpan”) below which is the limestone bedrock, found about 100 ft (30.5 m) below street level. The most notable feature in this profile is the unusually soft clay till that has historically been called “Chicago Blue Clay.”But the founding fathers of Chicago really didn’t care about what was under the ground. They recognized the importance of the city’s location as a potential trade and transportation hub. With access to the East through the Great Lakes and access to the West through the Mississippi River system, the viability of the city was evident. Chicago’s population grew rapidly. The city continued to grow through the Civil War years, but was dealt a devastating blow in 1871 by the Great Chicago Fire, leaving the city in ruins. The Birth of the SkyscraperAfter the cleanup of the Great Fire came the first real building boom in Chicago’s history. During this era, buildings were generally founded on shallow footings bearing on sand or clay. Many multistory buildings were constructed between 1880 and 1890 on spread footings. The first tall buildings were constructed with load bearing masonry walls. These early tall buildings suffered significant settlement as the soft clay underwent consolidation.The Home Insurance Building, built in 1885, was 12-stories tall and is generally acknowledged to be the first “skyscraper” in the U.S. It was the first building constructed with an iron skeleton frame instead of load bearing masonry walls. Spread footings were used under the interior columns in an effort to better distribute the loads, but the building still experienced large settlements.Construction began for the Monadnock Building in 1891. The 17-story building was built using load bearing walls 7 ft (2.1 m) thick, supported on rail-grillage footing foundations. When completed in 1893, the Monadnock Building boasted the title “World’s Largest Office Building.” The total building settlement over the past 125 years has been measured at over 20 in (0.51 m). The engineering community in the late 19th century observed settlement, but did not yet understand the process of consolidation of the soft clay beneath the city. During this time, many of the new buildings required structural repairs during and after construction; the problem was especially acute in buildings where highrise towers joined lower podium structures."

This paper describes a series of mechanical flotation cell results run with various chemical reagent schemes designed to economically improve the flotation performance associated with selected industrially available coals. The emphasis is on the identification of practical flotation methods of processing coals containing unusually coarse and/or fine feed sizes, of increasing the recovery of oxidized and/or difficult to float coal, and of increasing the selectivity of coal over pyrite in high sulfur coals.

Os aços inoxidáveis austeníticos apresentam interessante junção de propriedade mecânica com elevada resistência à corrosão. Porém, quando aplicados em temperaturas na faixa de sensitização e submetidos a ambientes agressivos, tornam-se suscetíveis à corrosão intergranular. Para verificação da suscetibilidade desses aços sofrem este fenômeno são realizados ensaios de corrosão. Dentre eles os mais utilizados são os contidos na norma ASTM A262, que possui cinco diferentes procedimentos. Este trabalho consiste na comparação dos procedimentos das Práticas A, C e E, contidos nessa norma, para determinação da tendência à corrosão intergranular do aço AISI 304L. Para isto, amostras do aço foram sensitizadas a 675°C por uma hora e em seguida submetidas aos diferentes ensaios descritos na norma. Após a realização dos três procedimentos, considera-se que a metodologia mais assertiva e confiável seja a Prática E, conhecido como ensaio de Strauss, e que as amostras analisadas não apresentaram corrosão intergranular.

"The No. 6 orebody is located 6 miles from the main op.eration of Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited and includes open-pit and primary gyratory crushing facilities. Ore is transferred by truck to the secondary crushing facility at the main plant. About 3,500 tons of ore per day are crushed to minus % in. and ground to 68 per cent minus 400 mesh in rod and ball mills for flotation feed. Conditioning and aeration precede rougher flotation, and four stages of cleaning bring concentrates to a grade of 42 per cent Pb + Zn + Cu. Middling products are reground and refloated in a secondary flotation circuit, producing a cleaner feed and a final tails product. Primary bulk concentrate is treated with sulphur dioxide and steam-heated to l 70°F and the majority of the gangue is floated off, leaving a product that assays 57 per cent combined Pb + Zn + Cu and is suitable for marketing. This material is thickened, filtered, dried and loaded into railway cars for shipment to the smelter. Reagent use on flotation is conventional, with many compromises in dosage required to maintain the recovery of lead and zinc in the most advantageous proportions. Many refinements in the flowsheet have been made since start-up in 1966, and more may be made as laboratory and plant testwork indicate possible improvements."

Chalk and marble are two extremes among a wide variety of carbonate rocks including limestones, marls, travertine and other calcareous materials. (Glen Summit Meeting, June, 1911,) DURING April, May, and June, 1910, I was in charge of an examination of the greater part of the Moa iron-ore area in Oriente Province, Cuba, on the north coast, near the east end of the island. My instructions, on arrival at the properties, were to check former estimates of tonnages and grades, and to re-examine the ore comprised in claims covering 44,727 acres. This work included .the running of lines dividing the properties into co-ordinate planes, the boring of many thousand feet of holes spaced at the intersections of these co-ordinates, the taking of samples of the ore penetrated, the analysis of these samples for their various constituent minerals, and the determination of the results as to tonnages, depths, and grades, both for individual properties and for the entire group. Each section of every one of the thousand holes drilled was to be compensated for depth and grade with every other, a series of simple arithmetical calculations of no slight magnitude, the mere mechanical labor of which consumed much time, but finally resulted in giving a complete average of all the essential facts for the entire area of 18,000 hectares. Had it not been for the more than willing, active, and able co-operation of the officers of the Spanish-American Iron Co., from Charles F. Rand, President, and Jennings S. Cox, General Manager, down to the most humble water-carrier, the work would have consumed far more time than it did. Papers prepared by others, and to which my present paper may be considered an addendum, elucidate, more fully than I could hope to do, the origin and geological character of these ores. I will confine myself to the situation, method and expense of exploration, and to probable courses of development and mining, with some attention to the cost of the ore delivered in the United States.

"A quantitative mineralogical study using ore microscopy, electron microscopy, proton-microprobe, image analysis, and material balances was done on samples from the circuit of a concentrator in Quebec, with particular emphasis on the Cu concentrate. The ore contains many different minerals, of which the principal ones, in decreasing order of abundance, are pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, bornite, galena, tennantite, and pyrrhotite. Minor to trace amounts of covellite, chalcocite, stannoidite, mawsonite, colusite, wittichenite, miharaite, hessite, petzite, electrum, and an unidentified Cu-Pb-Bi-sulfide also occur.Liberation of pyrite is very high in all size fractions for all samples (ranging from 80-91 %). Liberation of chalcopyrite, bomite, sphalerite, and tennantite is relatively high, on average, in the head .sample and Cu concentrate (55-78% and 66-88%, respectively). Most of the chalcopyrite in the flotation tails is not liberated, whereas about one half of the tennantite and sphalerite are liberated in both the flotation and :final tails. Recoveries calculated for the Cu concentrate (on the basis of assays, mineralogy, and image analysis) are chalcopyrite 72. 5%, bornite 73. 7%, sphalerite 41.0%, tennantite 70.9 %, and galena (together with some trace minerals) 34.2%. It was also calculated that the Cu concentrate contains 10.0 % of the pyrrhotite and i.4 % of the pyrite.Materials balance calculations were done on the five major sulfide minerals to determine the mineralogical distribution of 13 major, minor, and trace elements (as determined by protonmicroprobe analyses). It was determined that tennantite is the principal carrier of Bi (67%), As (90%), and Te (86%) in the Cu concentrate. Therefore, removal oftennantite, which is mostly liberated in the Cu concentrate would significantly reduce these three contaminant elements, but at a loss of9% of the Cu, 2.0% of the Zn, and 0.7% of the Ag. The precious metals (Au, Ag) occur as discrete minerals (electrum, petzite, hessite). Some of the Ag also occurs in solid solution in bornite (23.1% of Ag in Cu concentrate), tennantite, and sphalerite. Four of the major sulfides (chalcopyrite, bomite, sphalerite, tennantite) in the ore also contain measurable concentrations of the following trace elements: Se, Cd, In, Sn, and Sb, occurring mostly as solid solutions. Some of these elements are also concentrated (up to about 18%) in minor and trace minerals such as colusite, stannoidite, and mawsonite."

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Xiong’ershan district in the southern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) contains more than 20 gold deposits hosted in the late Neoarchean to early Palaeoproterozoic amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks or late Palaeoproterozoic unmetamorphosed volcanic rocks. Gold mineralisation consists mainly of auriferous quartz veins and disseminated ores in hydrothermally altered zones, with additional gold mineralised breccia pipes. Gold orebodies are strictly controlled by secondary- or higher-order brittle/ductile-brittle faults. Isotopic dating reveals two separate episodes of gold mineralisation: the Shanggong and Dianfang deposits formed in the range of 236 ± 1.4 to 202 ± 18 Ma, whereas the Gongyu, Qianhe and Qiyugou deposits formed between 135.0 ± 0.5 Ma and 124.0 ± 1.0 Ma. Stable isotope and noble gas geochemistry studies indicate that the Triassic gold deposits were precipitated from deeply-sourced, low-salinity fluids at 250–350°C, but whether the fluids were mainly derived from metamorphic devolatilisation or magmatic degassing remains unresolved. In contrast, the Early Cretaceous deposits most likely precipitated from a dominantly magmatic fluid, although metamorphic and meteoric components cannot be ruled out. Results from this study, when combined with regional geological and geochemical data, suggest that the Triassic gold mineralisation was generated by the deformation associated with the collision between the North China and Yangtze cratons, forming the Qinling-Dabie orogen. In contrast, the Early Cretaceous gold veining was a result of lithospheric destruction of the NCC, a process initiated by plate subduction from both the south and north since late Palaeozoic but ultimately triggered by the westward subduction of the palaeo-Pacific plate in the late Mesozoic. This study helps to reconcile the long-term debate on the timing, genesis and geodynamic setting of gold mineralisation in the Xiong’ershan and other districts along the southern margin of the NCC.CITATION:Li, J-W and Tang, K F, 2015. This Bureau of Mines research study found gas emission rates from an advancing face, and flows and pressure of gas from an exploration drill hole were dependent upon the geology of salt encountered in a domal salt mine. Normal production-grade "pure" salt adjacent to an anomalous' zone was found to have a methane emission rate of less than 5 ft3/ ton (0.1 m3/t) of mined salt from a room advanced by a continuous miner. Extremely low gas flows [less the 4 ft3/h (0.1 m3/h)] and lack of pressure buildup were also observed from this normal salt in a 154-ft (47-m) exploration drill hole. These data indicate that methane emissions should not be a problem when mining in this type of salt. In the adjacent anomalous zone, methane emission rates ranged from 15 to 70 ft3/ton (0.4 to 1.8 m3/t) of mined salt from an advancing face. Gas flows of approximately 42 ft3/h (1.2 m3/h), and pressures in excess of 900 psig (6,200 kPa) were observed in an exploration drill hole when the anomalous zone was encountered. This information suggests a greater methane emission hazard from the anomalous zone than from the associated normal salt. If this trend of increasing emissions problems associated with anomalous zones of salt is common with similar anomalous zones encountered or observed in other domal salt mines, then special control strategies should be employed to minimize this potential mining hazard.

Investments in new technology are often intended to improve the production or cost performance of existing operations. The economics used to justify these projects can be flawed, however, if they do not adequately consider the potential benefits of the alterative: the fully optimized use of the facility's present equipment and personnel. While new technology can be effective, dramatic improvements in production performance can also be achieved through the rigorous application of standard industrial engineering and operations management practices. An intermediate approach may also be effective: many basic improvements In the mine or plant necessary to support new technology will be equally effective when implemented for the facility's present operators. Firms who optimize their present operations are able to save the capital and avoid the risk associated with new technology. These firms will also be able to capitalize more quickly on new technology when it is implemented.
