In the production of SmCo permanent magnets with excellent temperature stability, corrosion resistance, and oxidation resistance, samarium (Sm), one of the rare earth elements (REEs), and cobalt (Co) are employed. Cobalt (Co) is a crucial component in tool materials, nickel-based alloys, tablet and smartphone batteries, and electric car batteries. REEs and Co have been listed as critical raw materials by the European Union Commission for many years. Due to the ever-growing demand for Co and REEs in technological applications, the recovery of these elements from secondary sources has garnered significant interest. There are two types of SmCo magnets, one of which contains a high amount of iron, approximately 15.2%. This paper focuses on the recycling of Fe-bearing SmCo. In this study, an oxidative leaching process with nitric acid was developed to eliminate iron through in situ hydrolysis and to dissolve REEs and Co. The influence of experimental conditions on the formation of an amorphous iron compound through the hydrolysis of Fe3+ in a nitric acid environment was thoroughly examined based on a Taguchi orthogonal array. The optimal parameters for oxidative leaching were determined to be an acid concentration of 3 mol/L, a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1/10, and a process temperature of 60 °C.

"Introduction The Luscar company, Forestburg Collieries Ltd., operates the Diplomat Mine located 14 km south of Forestburg, Alberta. Production is now at a declining rate from the 1 million tonnes achieved in 1978 as the reserves are being depleted. Three pits are operated at this prairie strip mine utilizing draglines and stripping shovels to uncover the coal. The coal is hauled to a tipple on site for shipment by rail or highway vehicles or is hauled directly to the adjacent Battle River Generating Station. Geology The mine is currently extracting the Battle River seam on the north side of the Battle River. This is the lower-most seam in the Horseshoe Canyon Formation and is the only one present in the area, the upper seams having been eroded by glaciation. The seam lies generally flat and varies from 2.0 to 5.0 metres thick. It lies under glacial till overburden varying in depth from 5.0 to 12.0 metres. The mineable coal extends from the side of the Battle River valley where it outcrops, to approximately 2.5 kilometres to the north. The mine is spread out over a distance of 8.0 kilometres in an east-west direction. Reserves and Coal Quality After over 30 years of mining at Diplomat, there are now less than 1 million tonnes of mineable reserves remaining on the property. With the commencement of coal production from the Paintearth Mine in 1981, supply to the Battle River Generating Station, formerly Diplomat's biggest customer, is being transferred to Paintearth. This Code for the Valuation of Mineral Properties (the “CIMVAL Code”) is the result of a review more than a decade after the release in 2003 of the “Standards and Guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties” (the "2003 Standards"). The purpose of the review is to update the 2003 Standards to reflect domestic valuation, international valuation, and regulatory developments. The CIMVAL Code was adopted by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy & Petroleum (the "CIM") Council on November 29, 2019. The CIMVAL Code supersedes the 2003 Standards. The 2003 Standards were dated February 2003 and were adopted by the CIM Council on March 9, 2003 as the first comprehensive set of standards for Valuation of Mineral Properties in the Canadian mining industry. The 2003 Standards followed recommendations of the Mining Standards Task Force of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission, where in its Final Report (January 1999), the CIM was specifically asked to form a committee of valuation practitioners to review and advise on standards for the Valuation of Mineral Properties. The Special Committee on Valuation of Mineral Properties ("CIMVAL") was created on May 5, 1999 with the mandate to recommend standards and guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties to be used by the mining industry in general. The CIMVAL Code is limited to the Valuation of Mineral Properties (including any interests therein) and does not cover valuation of corporations or other entities that hold Mineral Properties as assets. The CIMVAL Code does not cover petroleum and related assets. CIMVAL recommends that the CIMVAL Code be followed for all Valuations of Mineral Properties, including those required by securities administrators and stock exchanges. However, when a Valuation is required under the applicable rules of securities administrators or stock exchanges, such rules prevail to the extent of any inconsistency.

"Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) occurs in many countries around the world, and provides a source of livelihood to many impoverished local people in areas where it occurs. This paper reports the role of female participants and reasons why they engage in ASM. Field visits were made to 12 ASM sites located in the Tarkwa Mining District of Ghana to conduct interviews with male diggers and female participants. It was observed that over 100 women between the ages of 18 and 50 participate in ASM for survival. They engage in ASM largely because they have no alternative employable skills and income sources. These female participants depend on ASM to sustain the lives of their dependents. INTRODUCTION Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) conventionally involves use of rudimentary tools (such as picks, shovels, chisels and hammers) to exploit precious minerals and metals from the ground. It has been a major source of livelihood to many impoverished local people for more than a century. In many instances, it is the only source of income to indigenous people who have no alternative employable skills. The World Bank estimated that more than 100 million people around the world benefit from ASM which largely occurs in developing countries in Asia, Africa, Oceania, and South and Central America (World Bank, 2013). Cobalt, which is used in lithium-ion batteries to power cellphones, laptop computers, and electric vehicles, is largely produced by artisanal miners in Congo (The Washington Post, 2016). In Sudan, ASM is a significant contributor to the national economy, accounting for about 85% of total gold extracted yearly from 2010 to 2015 (Ibrahim, 2015). Also, according to the Embassy of Sierra Leone in Washington DC, USA, 90% of mineral export in Sierra Leone can be attributed to thriving artisanal diamond mining in the country (Sierra Leone Embassy, 2016). In Ghana, the ASM sector was recognized by government as a multimillion industrial activity, and through a series of initiatives, it was legalized by promulgating the Small Scale Gold Mining Law of 1989 (PNDCL 218). Presently, artisanal mining is widely practiced in two forms: licensed (registered), sometimes referred to as formal ASM, and unregistered (informal or illegal) operations, popularly called “galamsey”, a name believed to have been derived from “gather and sell” by ancient miners who could not communicate in the English language with European/British miners. The ASM sector in Ghana, like other countries, has seen a rise in female participation over the years. A report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) indicated that women account for about 15% of total workforce in ASM in Ghana, and up to 50% in Africa (ILO, 1999). Other researchers have also estimated women participants in ASM to be between 30 and 70% in Africa (Hinton et al., 2003a; Hinton et al. 2003b; Hilson, 2002). Presently, there is no reliable data from Ghanaian authorities on number of females engaged in ASM. However, data obtained from 15 ASM sites suggest that at least 40% of the employees are women. It is expected that a similar trend exists across ASM operations in Ghana."

The bureau of Mines analyzed data from 47 coal mine roof-fall resupport accidents that occurred from 1966 through 1974 to identify critical hazards .and problems. These accidents resulted in 62 injuries or fatalities. It was concluded that the majority of the accidents might have been prevented by observance of recommended practices and use of available technology such as setting temporary supports, adequate roof testing, etc. Additional work is needed in the following problem areas where present technology is inadequate: (1) warning of impending roof falls shortly before they occur, (2) better methods of detecting unsafe roof and ribs, (3) providing access to and temporary support of high roofs for testing and bolting, (4) reducing the noise level of stopers, (7) developing temporary roof support; that have greater stability and can be remotely installed, and (6) reducing the number of roof falls through better permanent support.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the potential availability of molybdenum resources from 88 mines and deposits that account for more than 90 pct of the demonstrated resource base in market economy countries (MEC's). For each property, tonnage-cost relationships were developed that indicate the molybdenum potentially available at different average production costs, including a 15-pct rate of return on invested capital. From the 23 MEC primary deposits, 2.5 billion 1b Mo was determined to be potentially available at a price of $411b, rising to 4.7 billion 1b Mo at $8/lb. Copper price-molybdenum tonnage relationships were developed for those mines and deposits from which molybdenum can be recovered as a byproduct of copper production. This analysis showed that another 3.4 billion lb Mo is potentially available based on a copper price of $0.7511b, rising to 4.3 billion lb Mo at $l.00/lb. The United States has been the world's largest molybdenum supplier since 1924. Its remaining resources are sufficient to meet the domestic demand of 57 million lb/yr Mo (averaged for a 10-yr period) through the end of the century. Production from primary domestic mines was suspended during most of 1983 because of oversupply of materials. A major concern is the cheap molybdenum byproducts from foreign copper operations in which employment and the need for hard currency override economics in meeting production goals.

A busca por metais para atender demandas crescentes vem em contracorrente à diminuição dos teores nas reservas. Desta forma, a busca por novas rotas de extração de metais aliada ao desenvolvimento sustentável se faz cada vez mais necessário. O presente trabalho teve por objetivo a recuperação de cobre do lixiviado proveniente de rejeito de níquel laterítico, que contém os seguintes metais: alumínio, cobalto, cromo, cobre, ferro, magnésio, manganês, níquel e zinco. Para isto, utilizou-se o processo de troca-iônica com a resina quelante Lewatit TP 207, uma resina catiônica com grupo funcional iminodiacetato. Estudou-se o tempo de reação e a influência de pH. O tempo de reação foi variado entre 0 e 24 horas e o pH de 0.5 a 2. Não foi estudado maiores valores de pH, pois haveria precipitação do ferro. A reação de adsorção pela resina entrou em equilíbrio em 180min. Em pH 2 teve maior recuperação de cobre, pois havia menor competição entre H+ e os cátions metálicos do licor, onde foi possível recuperar 50% do cobre. Os ensaios ocorreram em batelada com agitação de 200rpm, e as análises foram feitas usando a técnica de fluorescência de raios X por energia dispersiva (EDX).

To sustain the circular economy, defence applications, and other renewable technologies, recycling rare earth elements (REEs) and other critical elements from their secondary resources is important. This cause has resulted in rigorous research and development for viable extraction and separation of REEs. Previously, Sm-Co recycling has been done with technologies, which fall under the categories of pyrometallurgy, physical separation, and hydrometallurgy. All these methods have limitations associated with energy, cost, and environment. Reportedly, the chemical leaching technology has successfully recovered and separated Sm-Co. Still, it has limitations associated with slow mass transfer and leaching kinetics, and there is a need to intensify the process to make it time efficient. This approach has also adversely impacted the environment by an extensive use of toxic, corrosive, non-selective, and expensive reagents. In this research study, chemical leaching of Sm-Co was performed using this new class of solvents, Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs), which fall under the category of ion metallurgy. Four different DESs were used, proven to be green, non-toxic, biodegradable, cheap, and selective for cobalt over samarium by 82% leaching conversion. To improve the slow mass transfer and leaching time, this new technology of resonant vibratory mixing (RVM) was also tested. RVM intensifies mixing by establishing near instantaneous, low energy mixing conditions through resonance. It has been shown to improve the adsorption kinetics and was tested for the leaching kinetics. Four combinations of DESs were prepared, which are made up of two quaternary salts: Choline Chloride and Tetra Butyl Ammonium Chloride, and three organic compounds: Oxalic Acid, Urea, and Ethylene Glycol. These combinations were used for chemical leaching of Sm-Co with leaching factors of time, temperature, and type of DESs. After leaching, the samples were tested with and without resonant vibratory mixing with conditions of time, intensity (%), and type of DESs. Samples were analysed with Induced Coupled Plasma - Optical Spectroscopy (ICP - OES). Future work will involve a life-cycle assessment to assess the RVM technology with other conventional mixers, and an extensive study of DES properties to improve selective leaching.

Os métodos convencionais e os mais recentes de proteção contra a corrosão (revestimentos metálicos aplicados por eletrodeposição, deposição química (electroless), deposição química em fase vapor, deposição física de vapor e aplicação de tintas) empregados paras as ligas de aço-carbono também são empregados para as ligas à base de TR-Fe-B. Essa proteção torna-se necessária, uma vez que essas ligas possuem microestrutura muito mais complexa que as dos aços-carbono e apresentam em sua composição metais de terras raras os quais são intrinsicamente susceptíveis à corrosão. Os revestimentos utilizados são, no geral, constituídos de metais mais nobres do que as ligas, sendo por isso de extrema importância que sejam mantidos íntegros durante o manuseio individual dos ímãs e durante a sua montagem, ou, o posicionamento nos diversos dispositivos em que eles são empregados atualmente. O rompimento do revestimento implicará a diminuição da vida útil dos dispositivos.

Greater mining productivity requires a more efficient cutting process. The cutting force available from today?s mining machines has been optimized with respect to machine size and weight. Researchers have shown that when employing water-jet-assisted cutting, bit forces and drum torques can be reduced significantly, which may allow mining machines to become lighter and more efficient. The Bureau of Mines has initiated a program to develop a water- jet-assisted rotary cutting system using the conventional bit assisted by a directed water jet operating at moderate pressures (3,000 to 10,000 psi). This water-jet-assisted cutting system has the potential to improve cutting efficiency without increasing machine horsepower or water usage (beyond what is presently used for dust control) or requiring fundamental changes in mining practice. IR addition to improvements in productivity, other anticipated benefits of water-jet cutting include reduced generation of respirable dust, elimination of frictional ignitions, increased bit life, reduced fines, and fewer machine vibrations. The papers presented at this open industry meeting discuss the development of water-jet-assisted cutting technology and future application of this technology to a variety of mining techniques including roof drilling and longwall mining.

Modern furnace designs often incorporate extensive use of cooled elements to achieve long campaign lives at high operating intensities. However, contact between water and high temperature fluids can result in powerful Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosions (BLEVEs). Therefore cooling such elements with water carries inherent risks when used under slag and particularly below molten metal or matte. Alternative cooling media exist that can reduce or eliminate the risk of BLEVEs. These media are analysed and discussed in the context of deeply cooled furnace elements. Important factors in selecting alternative coolants are explored including: critical heat flux, thermal limits, toxicity, flammability, unit cost, etc. Key cooling system design criteria are reviewed in the context of both traditional and alternative coolants. Results of Computational Fluid Dynamics are presented for an example tap-block cooler design using a number of selected coolants. Research needs to advance the safe use of alternative coolants are presented.

T HIS has been a most momentous year in the annals of the Institute. We have been in the midst of a situation which, were it not for the convulsions of social unrest with which life is surrounded on every side, would have attracted the attention of the world at large. I do not refer to the desperate campaign for new members. That has gone on much as usual except that, this being leap year, the annual proposal to the M. & M. Society has been omitted. Nor do I refer to the desperate situation which we found in other directions, the spread of Bolshevism, the burning of the Engineers' Club, the fact that the selling of copper appears to have become one of the lost arts. No, I speak of the great question which has to be. settled once and for all, as to whether this great Institute should adopt simplified spelling. The whole trouble started in the ranks of the California Hysterical Society. It appears, while most of the San Francisco members can read and write, several of them cannot spell. It also appears that the Secretary, in editing the Transactions, has perhaps made just a little bit too much of a point of employing the correct Stoughton idiom. At any rate, the rebels filed an amendment to the constitution, and the stage was set for civil war, with perhaps more stress on war than on civil.

The distribution of tin and iron between slag and metal phases at about 1150°C was studied in pot scale experiments. The distribution coefficient k = (Sn/Fe) In metal X (Fe/Sn) in slag was found to vary from about 300 for metal corresponding to nearly pure tin, to about 100 for metal of about miscibility gap composition (17' 4 per cent Fe). Results conformed reasonably well to a straight line relationship between log k and (l-2NFe), as expected on theoretical grounds, and are consistent with thermodynamic data for the Fe-Sn phase diagram and the reaction Fe + SnO = FeO + Sn.Calculations are presented indicating the feasibility of smelting low-grade tin concentrates in a two-stage counter-current reduction process.

Industrial minerals are critical to most aspects of modern society. They are pervasive in both industry and in everyone's lives (McVey, 1989; Barsotti, 1993). They are also the dominant class of minerals produced in the United States but this fact is little known outside the industry. For example, in 1993 (U.S. Bureau of Mines, 1995, table 1) industrial mineral dollar value was double that of metals ($20.86 billion vs. $10.88 billion) and employment levels were nearly so (74,000 vs. 40,000). A further difference is that transportation tends to dominate production costs (FOB end user) whereas they are much less significant in other mining ventures or other industries. Finally, metal mines are more concentrated west of the Mississippi; industrial mineral operations are more prevalent to the east (U.S. Bureau of Mines, 1995, p. 16-17). The significance of transport cost is discussed in Part 2, which is essentially Barker and Austin, 1995. Part 1 will update and expand portions of Barker and Austin (1995) and provide a more detailed discussion of import/export relationships using a China/United States reference point because of China's dramatic influence on some industrial mineral markets since the mid-1980s (barite, etc.).

Today the BOF filter dusts and sludges are mainly dumped due to their zinc contents. By typically ranging from 2 to 5 % they prevent the filter dusts and sludges from beeing recycled via the blast furnace route. Based on the different discharge kinetics of Iron and zinc during the main blowing period In a bottom stirred BOF a simple and efficient system for recovery allow zinc fractions has been developed. The obtained material Is suitable for recycling without nsc of shell formation In the blast furnace. Different subsequent development steps have been performed. By starling with a very simple lime dependent model the sludge from the BOF off gas cleaning system was collected in two different sludge channel systems. This model based an the fact that most of the scrap based zinc Is discharged from the melt within the first eight to ten minutes of the BOF process. To Improve the system a spectroscope zinc sensor was Installed at the hot section of the off gas cleaning system to get more reliable informations on the actual zinc concentation of the BOF dust. By use of the system up to 50 % of the BOF sludge can be recycled.

GENERALThe lode, for purposes of description, may be said to be divided into two portions which are usually referred to as the Southern and Northern Orebodies.The southern ore-body is the larger and in places attains a width of 200 feet. The northern ore-body is, generally speaking, comparatively narrow. These ore-bodies have a northerly pitch of approximately 45' and a westerly dip of 60. In the southern ore-body a grid of ore chutes is provided at 31 ft. 8 in. (5 square set) intervals and this necessitates an elaborate arrangement of cross-cuts, portion of which have to be driven through the foot-wall. Crushed country rock adjacent to the foot-wall makes it necessary for drives to be placed at least 60 feet from the lode.In the northern ore-body the ore chutes are arranged along a longitudinal drive, thus making a much simpler layout. These layouts were described in detail by A. R. West (Proceedings A.I.M.M. No. 117). In opening up a new level from the shaft plat, a heading is extended in a westerly direction until a point approximately 60 feet from the footwall of the lode is reached.At this point the direction of the cross-cut is altered to a bearing approximately 90 to the general strike of the ore-body, and the cross-cut continued until the hanging-wall is intersected. From the information obtained together with that from diamond drilling, the outline of the ore-body is plotted as closely as possible, and this serves as a basis for the layout of the level. Drives south and north from the main cross-cut are made in order to determine the southern and northern extremity of the southern ore-body. O presente trabalho descreve a síntese de um vidro de constituição inovadora, elaborado com adição de escória de distribuidor em sua composição. Suas propriedades ópticas foram determinadas através da realização da caracterização elipsométrica. Em virtude da vasta gama de composições vítreas possíveis e visando o reaproveitamento de um coproduto siderúrgico, propõe-se a utilização de escória de distribuidor para a composição de um novo vidro. Efetuou-se a análise superficial via microscopia confocal. Posteriormente ao preparo da superfície, as propriedades ópticas foram obtidas através da medida dos parâmetros elipsométricos tan(?), cos(?) e por conseguinte a obtenção preliminar do índice de refração e do coeficiente de extinção.

The objectives of this study were the evaluation of the technical and economical feasibility of utilizing color and color infrared aerial photography to satisfy some informational needs for pre-mine planning, mine progress monitoring, and reclamation monitoring. Seven aerial data collection missions were conducted within a two year period over strip mine sites in Pennsylvania. Scales of 1:6,000; 1:12,000; 1:24,000; and 1:48,000 were flown on the first aerial mission. The 1:12,000 was chosen as the optimal scale for the remaining six flights. An extensive literature and legislative review and discussions with strip mine operators identified the informational parameters that could possibly be obtained from aerial photography. Interpretability accuracies were evaluated for parameters in the broad categories of land use, soils, water, vegetation, and geology. Seasonal interpretation characteristics were noted for infrared photography. Man hours for photointerpretation and costs of aerial data collection were monitored closely and incorporated into a cost benefit analysis. Those parameters that could be mapped, identified, or measured with accuracies =75 percent were incorporated into a photointerpretation training manual. An additional analysis was performed to determine the applicability of the interpretation methodologies and results developed for Eastern sites to Western surface coal mining sites. In addition, a separate aerial photographic interpretation manual was produced during this contract. It is intended to be utilized by eastern and midwestern surface mine operators and regulatory personnel.

A fase sigma () é conhecida por afetar negativamente as propriedades mecânicas e a resistência à corrosão dos aços inoxidáveis duplex (AIDs). Dessa forma, a exposição da liga a temperaturas elevadas durante os processos de produção, soldagem ou tratamentos térmicos devem ser realizadas de maneira cautelosa a fim de se evitar a precipitação da mesma. Assim sendo, modelos adequados para predizer a precipitação da fase são ferramentas muito úteis. Entre os numerosos modelos, a relação de Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov (JMAK) é um dos modelos mais comumente utilizadas para descrever a cinética das transformações isotérmicas de fases em muitos sistemas regidos pelos mecanismos de nucleação e crescimento. Diante disso, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo realizar um estudo cinético baseado na aplicação do modelo JMAK, da precipitação da fase em um AID UNS S31803 envelhecido isotermicamente nas temperaturas de 750ºC, 800ºC e 850ºC. Concluiu-se que a cinética de precipitação da fase na liga obedeceu ao modelo JMAK, pois foi obtida uma boa correlação entre dados experimentais e os simulados. Observou-se que o aumento da temperatura de envelhecimento de 750ºC para 850°C acelerou a cinética de precipitação de A energia de ativação determinada (182,4 kJ/mol) para precipitação da fase neste sistema, sugere que a difusão do Cr na ferrita seja o principal mecanismo envolvido na formação dessa fase.
