"Platinum-based alloys are being developed with microstructures similar to nickel-based superalloys for potential high-temperature applications in aggressive environments. Since the chemistries of nickel and platinum are similar, Pt-based alloys can be made with gamma prime ~Pt3Al precipitates in a gamma (Pt) matrix. Currently, the Pt-Al-Cr-Ru system is one of the bases for developing Pt-based alloys, where Al allows the formation of thePt3Al precipitate and also gives protection from the alumina scale formed, Cr provides oxidation resistance and stabilization for the L12~Pt3Al phase, and Ru provides solid solution strengthening in the (Pt) matrix. Four Pt-Al-Cr-Ru-V and two Pt-Al-Cr-Ru-V-Nb alloys were made, with compositions based on a quaternary alloy, ~Pt82:Al12:Cr4:Ru2, which hadpreviously been identified as having optimum properties. Four of the as-cast alloys had the targeted two-phase structure of ~Pt3Al and (Pt), and two were single-phase ~Pt3Al. Vanadium partitioned more to (Pt) than to~Pt3Al. There was an improvement in hardness compared to the quaternary alloys. The best addition of V was ~15 at.%; higher additions resulted in brittle intermetallic phases of the Pt-V system. The effect of Nbcould not be ascertained because of its high losses."

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 377 natural gas samples from 19 States and two foreign countries. Of this total, 373 samples were collected during calendar year 1970. The remaining four samples were collected during previous years, but releases granting per-mission to publish the analyses were not received until 1970. All samples were collected as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Twelve previous publications have presented the results of 9,050 gas analyses prior to 1970. "In the mining industry, rock excavation is the first phase of the comminution process. Downstreamoperations such as secondary breaking, crushing and milling terminate the process, reducing the size of the grains down to the desired particle distribution. In such a cascade process, every process upstream heavily influences all the downstream operations. When rock excavation is carried out by drilling and blasting, a very economic source of energy (the explosive) is used at the utmost upstream; a more expensive source of energy (electricity) is employed for all the downstream phases. This means that managing the correct employ of the explosive energy is a form of managing the whole process, controlling the operational costs and therefore the profitability of the whole business. We simulated this cascade behavior, using as a starting point the experimental data obtained from small-scale block blasting, evaluating the influence of blasting on the grindability of the blasted material. This study showed the reduction in visible (particle size) and invisible fracturing (micro-cracking, resulting in a reduction of the Work Index WI). The particle size distribution for full-scale blasts was estimated by means of algorithm simulation, then we simulated the behavior of the comminution plant fed with the material possessing the characteristics previously estimated. All the costs (drilling, blasting, electric energy for the engines of the crushers and mill) were calculated and charted. The results show a clear curve that allows to estimate the minimum operating expenditure (OPEX) for the whole mine+plant framework. Being the WI dependent on the output on the blast, one can manage the performance and the expenditure of the whole comminution process by adjusting drilling and blasting parameters For any given mine, it is possible to perform a simulation and encounter the minimum OPEX scenario for the comminution process and managerial choices can be oriented accordingly. In a cascade productive chain as mining is, responsible strategic choices must be taken looking at the entire production framework. Compartmentalized managerial staff and budgets for separated production areas are not acceptable anymore. Somehow higher costs upstream can lead to effective decrease in costs and increase in efficiency and productivity of the processes downstream."

A theoretical and experimental laboratory study has shown that the rate of breaking of oversized particles in a ball mill is proportional to 1) the concentration of such particles, and 2) the area of the balls, provided that the balls are larger than a certain size relative to the particles. If all undersized material were removed as formed, the rate of breaking would be almost independent of the quantity in the mill. Rate equations are given which are similar to those for zero, first, and second order reactions. Deviations of small balls from the equation for a second order phenomena are quantified by a factor called "nipping efficiency." Some data are correlated by a dimension-less equation, which is used to estimate nipping efficiencies from data not in the correlation. The investigation described here was undertaken after a literature survey revealed that little was known concerning the mechanism of breaking of particles within a ball mill and the effect of this mechanism upon grinding rates. One paper, by Roberts1 , offered a theory concerning the mechanism of breaking, and a rate equation for the breaking of particles larger than some size to particles smaller than that size. That paper provided the starting point for a theoretical and experimental investigation of grinding under carefully controlled conditions. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS In his paper on the probability theory of ball mill grinding, Roberts theorized that "... a given expenditure of power leads either to a certain number of point to point blows per bp-hr or to a certain distance of line contact per hp-hr ..." He assumed that the balls touch each other during each blow or during moving contact. Then he said that a volume of pulp, dependent upon the size being considered, would be covered per minute within which all oversized particles would be crushed to particles smaller than that size. Naturally, the higher the concentration of oversized particles in the pulp, the higher the rate of which they would be broken. From this reasoning Roberts obtained the differential equation -dC/dt = k hp/ton C (1) where k is a constant for any size of particle, density of particle, and moisture content of pulp. C is the percentage of oversize in the material to be ground, t is the time, and hp/ton is the power input per ton of material in the mill. He then integrated the equation to log Co/Ct = k/2.3 hp/ton t , where Co and Ct are the percentage of oversize at time zero and t respectively. By always using the same quantity of material in a mill and assuming that it required constant power to run the mill, he was able to combine the horsepower per ton factor with the other constants to give an equation for a first order rate.

The performances of the three bituminous coal demonstration methane re¬covery boreholes, located in Greene County, Pennsylvania, are reviewed. Development of these vertical holes was largely underwritten by project funds. Reference is also made to an anthracite coal methane project in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. This involved one vertical hole and was underwritten by a utility company. In addition, an exploratory drilling in the southern anthracite, which provided the project group with coal cores for methane gas analysis, is also cited. The technical and economical data that were gathered from the various methane projects are analyzed. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of methane recovery by vertical boreholes are assessed.

Process Options for Difficult Arid-Region Nickel Laterites In the absence of the discovery of significant nickel sulfide deposits, the future of Australia's nickel industry will increasingly depend on cost effect processes for low-grade nickel laterites. The problems encountered with the West Australian HPAL plants, resulting in three of the four plants being shut down, have caused the industry to revisit atmospheric leaching options, particularly heap leaching. West Australian laterites are characteristically very varied in grade, chemical composition and mineralogy with the result that, thus far, one process does not fit all laterites. In this paper the leaching of an especially refractory ore is compared using column leaching of whole ore and atmospheric leaching and HPAL processing of ground ore. The key characteristic is the resistance of the goethite phase to acid attack with low-to-moderate temperature leaching conditions. The refractory characteristic is attributed to the stabilising influence of chromium and aluminium and possibly manganese substitution in the goethite crystal structure and goethite morphology. A significant three-fold increase in both nickel and cobalt extractions under atmospheric leaching conditions was achieved by the relatively simple modification of bubbling sulfur dioxide into the reaction vessel to create a reducing environment. Recoveries increased from <30 per cent to 90 per cent nickel and 86 per cent cobalt after 10 hours of leaching at 95¦C. An even greater improvement was achieved under ambient conditions by heating the ore to temperatures above 250¦C for 30 minutes. Subsequent leaching at ambient temperature gave an eight-fold increase in both nickel and cobalt recoveries after 14 days bottle rolling. Both methods could be optimised and implemented in such a way as to increase laterite reserves in conjunction with a heap leach operation but may be better suited to vat or closed tank processing.

 The Southern Alps is an active oblique collisional zone which has a characteristic wedge-shaped geometry above a low-angle ductile shear zone. The Main Divide region is a relatively low strain zone above this ductile shear zone, and is _deforming principally along steeply dipping strike-slip faults. Extensional fractures are common at a high angle to the regional structural trend. These steeply dipping structures act as conduits for gold-bearing fluids from depth, and small mesothermal gold deposits have formed at several structural levels including the near-surface region. Gold has also been deposited in a meteoricmetamorphic fluid mixing zone near a conductive thermal anomaly on the western slopes of the mountains. These various gold deposits and their well-constrained structural and tectonic settings can be used as analogues for larger, deeper-eroded mesothermal gold deposits in the Mesozoic Otago Schist belt. High level Miocene veins in NW Otago have formed beneath the main divide of the initiating Southern Alps. Late metamorphic gold-bearing veins formed as fluid escaped from the ductile-deforming crustal root beneath Mesozoic mountains.

THE appearance of the Wilfley table in 1897 marked an epoch in the art of concentration of ores. The table has merited and received an almost unprecedented measure of public approval, lasting through its whole patent life. It has been very little improved in itself, or improved upon by competitors. The new machines bidding for popular favor have been of the Wilfley family, but without ability to do markedly better work than the parent m:-chine, or to (to more work except by the use of superimposed decks, the latter having obvious disadvantages. During the past three years there has been developed at Morenci a new type or arrangement of riffles applicable to the Wilfley type of concentrating table which corrects many of the objectionable features or limitations of the older system and obviates most of the difficulties encountered with it, particularly when handling ores having a low ratio of concentration. The new type is known as the Butchart1 riffle system, and its general arrangement is shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

O chamote é um resíduo proveniente da indústria cerâmica, classificado como material não-plástico. Tal rejeito pode ser retornado ao processo de produção de cerâmicas, substituindo parte da matéria-prima convencional. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a incorporação de chamote nas propriedades físicas e mecânicas de peças cerâmicas sob três temperaturas de queima distintas: 850°C, 950°C e 1050°C. As matérias-primas utilizadas na pesquisa foram caracterizadas quanto à granulometria, limites de consistência e composição química por meio de EDX. Foram propostas três misturas, contendo 0%, 13,33% e 40% do resíduo. Corpos de prova prismáticos foram produzidos por prensagem e, após, realizou-se os ensaios de determinação da retração na queima, índice de absorção de água e resistência à flexão. Os resultados revelam que, quanto maior a temperatura, maior a retração linear na queima e a resistência à flexão em todas as misturas. Em relação à absorção, foram observados menores valores a 1050°C, devido ao processo de vitrificação. Verificou-se que a adição de chamote reduz a retração; no entanto, reduz também a resistência mecânica. Dentre as misturas com resíduo, a composição com 13,33% apresentou melhores resultados, sobretudo sob a temperatura de 1050°C.

When a gas is displaced by mother in a porous medium, and there is a relative immobile liquid present. there is a transition zone in which the gas composition varies from essentially that of the original gas to that of the injected gas. The change in extent of this zone with time may be governed by a mixing process in the direction of flow and by the rate of establishment of gas-liquid equilibrium, if the gases are appreciably soluble in the liquid. The relative importance of these two factors in deterri~ining the growth of the transition zone is discussed, with appropriate equations and experimental data. INTRODUCTION The various solution methods of oil recovery involve a transfer of the components of a mixture, whether within a single phase or between a liquid and gas. The similarity of a natural porous medium to systems used in separation and chromatographic processes makes it seem reasonable that certain concepts used by chemical engineers in "mass transfer" might be applicable to petroleum reservoirs. One approach, the HETP (height equivalent to a theoretical plate), involves a distance or length of time over which equilibrium might be con. sidered as established. Another approach involves direct use of a rate of mixing or rate of establishment of equilibrium. The latter approach has been preferred in relation to production problems. DISCUSSION AND PROCEDURE When a gas or liquid in a porous medium is displaced by one of different composition but miscible with it there will be set up a transition zone in which the composition varies from cssentially that of the original fluid to essentially that of the injected fluid. This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rim. Also included are tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

A nuclear method was developed for continuously and automatically deter-mining the moisture content of coal flowing through a bin. Fast neutrons from a 1 curie americium-beryllium source penetrate the coal, are thermalized (slowed down) by hydrogen in the moisture, and are counted by a thermal neutron detector. The difference between the number of these thermal neutrons and those thermalized by dry coal (in a reference drum) is a measure of the moisture content of the coal. A materials handling system was developed and in tests at a commercial coal preparation plant, moisture in coal was monitored continuously within 0.2 percent of values determined by conventional means. The meter responded rapidly to change in moisture content, making it adaptable to automatic process control, and was operated for 1 year without malfunction or recalibration. Shielding of the source by the coal kept the neutron flux level at the bin wall less than 1 milliroentgen per hour, a safe level for personnel.

"Process modeling and equipment sizing procedures for SAG circuits has advanced significantly over the past two decades. However, no matter how exact the hardness tests, models and scale-up calculations, if the ore samples being used for design do not accurately represent the orebody then major design errors can be encountered. This paper will describe a hardness testing method for identiQing the power requirement profile of an orebody, to an extent that design errors due to poor sampling can be greatly reduced or avoided altogether. It will provide some insight into the magnitude of hardness variability that can be encountered in an orebody. Finally, the paper will preview how detailed hardness distribution data can be incorporated into mine block models, to optimize SAG circuit design for an orebody, both fi-om a capital investment and throughput point of view.INTRODUCTIONIt has long been known that many SAG/AG' circuits experience wide swings in throughput. These throughput variations are almost always of a magnitude not anticipated in the plant design; consequently, they are detrimental to the expected return on investment for the mining companies. It is clear that the throughput swings are mainly caused by changes in ore hardness. In 1993, in an attempt to address this problem, MinnovEX began investigating the possibility of using a small scale SAG test (2 kg charge) to predict SAG power requirements from drill core samples. The objectives of the small scale test were to enable mining companies to do many more SAG hardness tests than currently undertaken for a particular orebody. To make this possible, the SAG tests had to use a minimal amount of sample, be cost effective, and give acceptable accuracy in the prediction of SAG power. If this small scale SAG test proved accurate, then the high sampling frequency would yield results that approach the true hardness distribution of an orebody. This hardness distribution could then be used to derive the distribution and variability of specific energy required throughout the complete orebody. This specific energy (kWh/t) can be thought of as the power required to grind one tonne of ore per hour (kW/tph) to a specified size. Once the true distribution of power requirement throughout the whole orebody is understood, the grinding circuit design team can make an informed decision regarding the hardness value that is most appropriate for sizing the SAG equipment. Throughput losses due to hardness variation could be deliberately planned for or avoided altogether (a capital cost decision)."

The regional structure of shear and deformation zones in the belt, which is recognisable in plan view on Landsat TM images, is interpreted in terms of a conjugate-shear model. Gold mineralisation is related to this framework at a variety of scales. The principal recurrent structural geometries hosting deposits at mines such as Motapa, Durban, Charliesona, Cecil, Sunace, Turk group, Queens district, How, Peter Pat, Matabele Sheba, Goodenough, Old Nic and Bushtick are associated with shear zones and folds and include conjugate systems (shears, shear intersections, kink sets), side-step systems (en echelon segmentation, duplexes, monoclinal inflections, antiform-synform couplets) and interactions of the two. Linear sections of shear zones are generally poorly mineralised. The same geometries are identifiable on all scales from local to regional, so sections of regional structural lineaments or areas within mines should be prioritised for further investigation or development on the basis of the gold-bearing geometries observed to be dominant locally

Em Conformação sob Fluência com Envelhecimento, do inglês Creep Age Forming (CAF), o material previamente solubilizado e temperado é carregado elasticamente (normalmente por flexão) e subsequentemente aquecido à temperatura de tratamento térmico de envelhecimento. Basicamente, a conformação se dá por meio de deformações provocadas simultaneamente pela tensão aplicada ao longo do tempo (fluência) e endurecimento por precipitação (envelhecimento). Sendo assim, pretende-se avaliar os efeitos dos parâmetros mencionados no retorno elástico, como tempo, temperatura, retorno elástico e propriedades mecânicas. Portanto foi avaliado, a variação do retorno elástico (springback) em função do tempo para a liga de alumínio AA7475 submetida a um carregamento de flexão durante o envelhecimento realizado em duas temperaturas diferentes (120°C e 150°C). Foi possível observar que quanto menor o tempo e a temperatura de envelhecimento, maior o retorno elástico. Portanto, quanto maior o retorno elástico da peça, mais próxima ela estará do seu formato original antes da conformação [1]. Em relação à dureza, foi observado que quando o material é submetido a uma temperatura de 120°C obtém-se um aumento significativo de dureza Vickers com o passar do tempo (atribuída a precipitação refinada) e a 150°C não ocorre esse aumento significativo dessa propriedade mecânica (atribuído a precipitação mais grosseira).

The problem of corrosion of reinforcement in concrete structures is internationally recognized and represents the single biggest expenditure in the preservation of steel reinforced concrete structures. While the corrosion protection of the reinforcing steel is no substitute for design and the placement of good quality concrete, it does provide for a viable and economical extension of structural integrity and service life in the day-to-day and practical environment in which concrete structures are constructed. The mechanism of corrosion attack and consequent deterioration of reinforced concrete structures is well understood and documented. New structures can be designed and built to withstand corrosion. However, due to short-term economic restraints, many new reinforced concrete structures continue to suffer as a result of corrosion damage, which results from the corrosion of the steel reinforcing. This paper explores the economic and practical benefits offered by the application of hot dip galvanizing as a viable means of protecting reinforcing steel concrete structures. The paper also discusses technical misconceptions that exist about application and performance provided by the use of hot dip galvanized reinforcing steel.

"Ore sorting has been quite successful in providing a separation means in the rock size range of 1 to 6 inches; a range where mineral dressers do not have many options. The industrial minerals and recycling worlds have embraced this technology. However, ore sorting has not found wide application in the base or precious metals mining industry. One reason for this is thought to be the reliance of most sensors on rock surface characteristics, not very useful in case of sulphides, non-existing in case of gold. Microwave heating, however, is specific for sulphides and graphite (or carbonaceous matter) embedded in the rocks; washing or even drying does not appear necessary. Separation can be done afterwards by already existing ore sorting technology using infrared sensors. Test results on six Nevada gold ore samples are presented in detail. Some simple test procedures are also presented for those wishing to explore the microwave potential of sulphide sorting in their own operations.INTRODUCTIONMineral processing in the base metals industry most often involves upgrading of the ore, concentrating the valuable mineral fraction by classic methods, such as flotation. Since the liberation of minerals in the ore occurs mostly at or below the 100 micron level, the industry has been living with fault lines, so to speak, between blast hole spacing (10,000 mm), run-of-mine ore size (100 mm) and beneficiation size (0.1 – 0.01 mm). The acceptance of ore sorting will inevitably lead to the revisiting of the following questions: “Exactly how much below ore grade rock ends up in the mill because the geologists or the miners cannot define the resource boundaries more precisely? How can the economics of dilution be improved? How many ore grade rocks are lost with the overburden?”"

Rehabilitation challenges were met nearly two months ahead of contract schedule for the Design-Build, Fast Track Scituate Aqueduct & Tunnel project in Cranston, Rhode Island. The aqueduct and tunnel were built in the 1920s and consisted of three sections—a 2.3 m diameter reinforced concrete section that extends approximately305 m before it transitions to a horseshoe-shaped 2.3 m wide by 2.1 m high cast-in-place concrete tunnel that continues for approximately 5.3 km until it transitions back to a 2.3 m circular section that extends approximately 1.9 km to the end of this project. Major repairs were required to assure sustained operation of this water supply tunnel.

In addition, the stakeholder expectations are growing along with challenges associated with highly complex mine permitting processes and changing demographics of mining jurisdictions. The dynamic metals market adds to these challenges impacting the long term development and sustainability of mining projects.These challenges are compelling mining companies to look at various innovations with an integrated approach focusing on meeting the needs of various stakeholders. Mining companies are slowly tapping into some successful concepts that have transformed other industries such as manufacturing, chemical, pharmaceuticals along with oil and gas.This paper provides an overview of various innovations and technology developments in mineral processing that have shaped the current mining industry. A glimpse of the present and future challenges in mining is also presented. An integrated approach to problem solving involving various stakeholders is gaining momentum and this has been reflected in this paper. Various developments that are being pursed in mineral processing focusing on a change in the existing mining paradigm are also presented in this paper.INTRODUCTIONAs mining is evolving, so are the challenges associated with mining.
