THE following notes were accumulated during the years 1905 to 1911, when the writer was employed at Stannary Hills. The writer's duty took him over the underground workings daily. In odd moments the geology of the surrounding country was worked out. As the time for this purpose was limited, many interesting points had to be left, untouched. The faulting system in the mines was of such a puzzling character that it seemed as if the geology of the surrounding district might throw some light on it. Dr Jack, in 1907, reported on these mines for the shareholders, but came to no definite conclusions. Unfortunately, the writer has not had access to this report for many years. At the time of his visit the larger develbpments in the Ivanhoe and, Kitchenen orebodies (see Fig 1, B2) were only being opened up. Mr. H. Herman mentions Stannary Hills on p 320, Proceedings Aust Inst ME, new series, No 14, and on p 326 expresses the opinion that the pipe or joint-veins (as at Irvine bank and Stannary Hills) were more valuable to follow than lodes in the granite in that district.GEOLOGY OF DISTRICTThe main feature of the area mapped is a band of altered sedimentary rocks which carry no fossils. It is a mile wide, and consists of a hard band of greywackes 200 ·t ·300 yds. wide, flanked on both sides by contorted shales which become more micaceous as the granite-area to the east is approached. The strata have a general strike of N. 30° W., with a steep westerly dip. A large area of acid intrusive rocks occurs to the west of this band. The continuously growing demand for rare earth elements (REEs), in combination with the crisis of 2009 and the price spike of 2011, has initiated a treasure hunt for rare earth deposits all over the world in recent years. Since then, commodity prices have declined and are now quite stable, yet the world is still dependent on China’s dominance of the market and its export policies. Exploration is unremitting and numerous resources of potential interest have already been revealed in many countries; however, proceeding to mining operations is not that simple, especially when it comes to the exploitation of rare earth deposits. Evaluating the feasibility of a mining project is always a unique, sensitive and rather complex process that depends on multiple criteria.This paper focuses on clarifying the present and future global situation in the development of respective deposits and on identifying rare earth-specific criteria that influence the overall feasibility assessments of any potential (especially underground) mining projects. Environmental impacts, legislation issues and the presence of radioactive pollutants are some of the notable boundary conditions that govern rare earth mining operations and need to be taken into consideration. Furthermore, the balance problem between the supply and demand of the different REEs can determine decisively whether a deposit of specific REEs is economically exploitable. For this reason, evaluations are made regarding the future strategies to be enacted in order for the rest of the world to detach itself from this situation. Minnovare identified the potential to improve production drilling outcomes in underground long-hole stopes through the adaptation of new technology which was under ongoing development. An approach to Evolution Mining resulted in the companies agreeing to a collaborative agreement to further develop the technology for use on underground long-hole drilling equipment. During a period of six months in FY2018, a series of trials were conducted to compare drilling accuracy using two different methodologies and the subsequent impact this had on ore dilution. Testing was conducted at Cracow underground gold mine in Queensland, Australia. The drill rig’s existing setup/alignment process was compared to the new technology system with the following observations: • Using the existing process only 20% of holes surveyed recorded toe points within the +/ 300mm (11.8in) tolerance blast-hole deviation. • The new technology was proven to limit rig setup/alignment error, reducing average blasthole deviation and increasing the number of holes drilled within tolerance by 160%. The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution by reducing over-break of subgrade ore: • Stopes drilled using the new technology recorded 62.6% less average dilution. • This contributed to an overall reduction in dilution for the full year (FY18) of 5 percentage points compared to FY17 - from 22% to 17% (a net decrease of 22.7%). • With the system implemented as standard practice following results of the FY18 trial and continued success, overall dilution for full year FY19 showed continued reduction to 12% Evolution has continued use of the new technology at Cracow, where the improved accuracy has allowed the extraction of narrower stopes where drilling accuracy is critical. Evolution has also deployed the technology at the Mungari operation and has stipulated that the contractor use the technology at the Mt Carlton operation, which is currently under development. Future implementation of the Development Optimiser system should be verified by commencing additional trials to include a larger data base for validating the initial trial results.

"This paper summarizes research that was done at the Mines Branch, Ottawa, to evaluate samples of phosphogypsum for gypsum products manufacture. The samples were from phosphate fertilizer facilities at: Port Maitland, Ontario ; Valleyfield, Quebec; and Fort Saskatchewan and Redwater, Alberta. All samples were wet-screened, washed, filtered and calcined in a laboratory kettle at atmospheric pressure. Tests were also made at higher pressures in a small autoclave. The gypsum and resulting hemi-hydrate, being acidic, were treated before, during and after calcining with various bases. The hemi-hydrate products were checked for time of set, compressive strength and bond to gypsum wallboard paper. The results of this study indicate that phosphogypsum from each of the sources investigated has potential as a substitute for mined gypsum in gypsum products manufacture. Pilot-scale testing is recommended to confirm that the product would be satisfactory for the manufacture of plaster products on a commercial basis."

Consultants in the mining industry have the opportunity to visit interesting deposits all over the world. Each deposit has its own set of challenges to face when it comes to defining and understanding the deposit geology and the economics to make it viable for extraction. Some of the challenges can include appropriate data capture, sampling techniques, structural characteristics, geochemistry, geophysics, lithology definition, and economic boundaries. It is essential that the practices used at each deposit (eg drilling, sampling, geological modelling, resource estimation etc) are documented and the results obtained are robust and defensible. The Competent Person is not always aware of instances where their resource estimation practices have not been substantiated. ‘You don’t know what you don’t know’ is a phrase frequently used during a mineral resource audit. Technical work to substantiate drilling, sampling, density, assaying, geological modelling and estimation processes is not always completed. Audited Competent Persons often comment: • ‘I was unaware that this was required.’ • ‘I have not had training in this area and do not know how to complete the checks required.’ • ‘This is how we’ve always done it.’ Examples of audits where it was found that geological practices were not substantiated are examined here. A discussion is included on why substantiation of these practices is important, and potential reasons as to why there are instances of unsubstantiated processes and practices are discussed.

Thermodynamic calculations involving the oxides of tungsten and molybdenum have been hampered by lack of accurate entropies and high temperature heat contents. This paper presents work by the Federal Bureau of Mines on new low-temperature heat-capacity data leading to the evaluation of the 298.15° K. entropies of tungsten dioxide and tungsten trioxide, as well as high-temperature heat contents (above 298.15° K.) of molybdenum dioxide, molybdenum tri-oxide, tungsten dioxide, and tungsten trioxide. Included are heats of fusion of the two trioxides. The heats of formation at 298.15° K. of these four oxides are tabulated as measured by Mah4 5/ of this laboratory. Included also are the 298.15° K. entropy of Mo02 measured by Kin 6/ of this laboratory, and that for Mo03 according to Kelley and King.7/ These basic data provide a consistent compilation from which to perform accurate thermodynamic calculations involving these compounds. No previous low-temperature- heat-capacity measurements have been reported for tungsten dioxide. Seltz, Dunkerley, and DeWitt8/ measured the low-temperature heat capacity of tungsten trioxide. The only previously-reported high-temperature heat-content measurements for any of the oxides were conducted by Cosgrove and Snyder,9/ who measured molybdenum trioxide to 1,300° K.

The Nonmetals Division studies problems relating to the use of minerals, many of which are important to national defence for purposes other than the extraction of metals. In fact, virtually all of the work of the division has been diverted to investigations pertaining to better use of the Nation's natural nonmetallic is resources as weapons of defense. The experiment stations of the division are at Norris, Tenn.; Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Seattle, Wash.; and College Park, Md. Studies involving the application of electric power to the nonmetallic minerals are conducted at the Electrotechnical Laboratory at Norris, and investigations on mineral-dressing treatment are conducted mainly at the Southern Experiment Station at Tuscaloosa. The cleaning and preparation of coal are studied at both Tuscaloosa and the Northwest Experiment Station Lit Seattle (other projects relating to utilization of coal are conducted by the Coal Division of the Bureau of Mines). Problems covering the use of minerals and fundamental problems as to their properties are studied at College Park.

Unexpected equipment failures lead to financial losses due to production disruption. Time-based maintenance, based on checks over regular time periods, has been employed to minimise disruption. However, the improvements it can offer are limited as it may lead to unnecessary service of healthy equipment or missed failures occurring between service intervals. Condition-based maintenance (CBM) provides a further improvement to equipment reliability by detecting faults and predicting remaining useful life (RUL) based on equipment health monitoring. Its application in the mineral processing industry is hindered due to the high cost of health monitoring equipment. In this study, two stochastic process models, the adaptive auto-regressive model and the gamma process, are compared in their ability to forecast the degradation state and to provide RUL prediction. The gamma process model was found to be effective in both tasks. Due to its simplicity and minimum hyperparameters requirements, it is proposed to use the gamma process as a baseline for comparison with other models. "The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006 established the Office of Mine Safety and Health (OMSH) within NIOSH and provided authority for awarding contracts related to the development and implementation of new mine technology and equipment. Subsequently, Congress provided additional funding to NIOSH to initiate and continue the program. OMSHR has fulfilled this Congressional mandate through annual Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) solicitations, directed Requests for Proposals (RFP) and Inter-Agency Agreements (IAA), and has further expanded the program through capacity building BAA contracts with U.S. university mining departments in the areas of mine ventilation and ground control. This paper describes the extramural funding program and broadly examines the results of the 150+ contracts issued to date, grouped into key focus areas. INTRODUCTION The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 20061 established the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (functioning as the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research or OMSHR) within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and provided authority for awarding contracts related to the development and implementation of new mine technology and equipment. The OMSHR external contracts program was formed in accordance with the MINER Act and has since issued over 150 contracts focused on worker health and safety. Initial funding for this program was provided by Congress through two Emergency Supplemental Appropriations (ESA) and was focused on emergency oxygen supply, communications and tracking, and refuge chambers (also referred to as refuge alternatives). Since the MINER Act, Congress has continued to fund the program through the annual NIOSH mining appropriation. The program was supplemented starting in 2009 with an academic capacity building program directed toward developing university tenure-track faculty and facilities and supporting graduate students in the area of mine ventilation; ground control was added as an additional focus area in 2011. A short synopsis of each contract is published on the NIOSH Mining website2 and final reports are available in digital form on request. A summary of the progress OMSHR has made over the 10-year period since the Act was published previously.3"

THE White Knob copper-deposits are situated about three miles south of Mackay, on the Salmon River .branch of the Oregon Short Line Railroad, in Custer county, Idaho. An outline-map of this district is given in Fig. 1. The deposits have been known and spasmodically worked for many years, and a total of over 3.5 miles of tunnels, shafts and other workings has been driven with a view to their development. These extensive excavations have exposed the deposits sufficiently to permit a careful geological examination. The peculiar features which give special interest to this paper are the branching, free-like form of the ore-bodies; the absence of zones of secondary enrichment in the partly oxidized pyritic deposits, and the fact that while the deposits are associated in a general way with the contact of an eruptive rock with limestone, which it penetrates, the garnetization has taken place not in the limestone, as is the usual case, but in the igneous

Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements commenced in 1975. Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioned in June, 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world. The equipment selected is described and compared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise cleanup effort and to ensure stability of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Programmable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

Transportation charges for mineral commodity movements in western Oregon and western Washington were determined mainly by a stratified random sample canvass of producers. Total 1965 mineral production value for this area was $53.3 million; the cost or charge to move this production from the mine to the consumer or to the point of consumption was determined to be an additional $38.7 million. Thirty seven companies were contacted as a sample out of a total population of 349; the statistically expanded sample production value deviated 3.6 percent from that obtained by the Bureau's annual canvass. The agreement between the sample results and the canvass totals demonstrated the effectiveness of the sampling method for obtaining data with a predesigned level of accuracy. For comparison, the north-central Idaho and western Montana area was studied, A random sample experiment was designed, but because of the dominance of a few major companies, a random sample technique would have required more visits to producers than if only the larger firms were contacted. Eighty-four percent of the 1966 mineral value ($198.6 million) was accounted for by interviewing 27 firms out of a total population of 199. Total transportation costs or charges for the area were $26.7 million. The significant difference observed between the relationship of minerals production value and transport charges between the two areas investigated can be attributed to the difference in the minerals produced. The western Oregon and western Washington region is a nonmetals-producing area as opposed to the predominance of metals production in the Idaho-Montana region.

A complete mining cycle involves digging, loading, hauling and dumping of the materials. Moving the ore from the pit to the crusher or to the waste dump requires access routes, which are termed haul roads. These roads have to be designed, constructed and maintained. A review of the literature indicates a common consensus among researchers that there should be a balance between haul road economics and safety of the road users. However, there is no universally accepted theory on the design of haul road geometry and, in particular, road dimensions. The current industry practice is based on empirical data and rules of thumb developed by engineers. Therefore, this paper will use the overlooked and less valued branch of mathematics, arithmetic progression, to derive a road width equation. It is beyond the scope of this paper to discuss all road design components. The focus will be on the geometric aspects, which more often have a direct impact on road safety. In this paper, the current design practices and techniques for haul road geometrics design will be explored, using arithmetic progression to formulate road width equations, case examples to apply the equation and then validating the results with conventional techniques that have confirmed the reliability of road width equations, thus eliminating use of tables during design.

Rock mass discontinuities play a significant role in evaluating the stability of rock slopes. It is necessary to collect and analyze these discontinuities to fully understand the mechanical and deformational behaviors of rock masses. Based on the digital images of some slope faces, this paper proposes a framework based on machine learning for detecting and extracting discontinuities. First, digital images and photo poses are combined, the original scene is reconstructed, and 3D point cloud data are obtained. All captured point clouds can be mapped with each image by the direct linear transformation algorithm. Next, the detection machine learning algorithm is used to segment rock mass discontinuities on 2D digital images. Finally, based on the mapping relationship, the 2D digital images that were segmented are transformed into 3D point cloud data. The geometric parameters of the corresponding discontinuities can be extracted by the DBSCAN and the Skmeans algorithm and the characterization of specific rules. The proposed framework was evaluated utilizing a quantity of slope digital images in the Yebatan hydropower under construction, located in Sichuan Province, China, as a case study. The results illustrate that most deviations are less than 10° for the dip direction and dip angle, which verifies the reliability of the proposed framework and maintains acceptable measurement accuracy.

In July 1997, Kvaerner Environmental signed a unique contract with Echo Bay Alaska called the Transfer Risk and Accelerate Closure (TRAC). The contract called for Kvaerner to assume the responsibilities and obligations associated with closeout of the Alaska-Juneau (A-J) Mine. Kvaerner is an international engineering and construction company with global interdisciplinary experience in the mining industry and environmental remediation. Echo Bay’s requirements called for Kvaerner to: •Provide a fixed price for closure with no change orders. •Negotiate, prepare and implement a final closeout plan as outlined by Echo Bay. •Complete a closure program that exceeded current regulatory requirements. •Improve, expand and maintain a proactive public and community relations program. •Hire Echo Bay employees where possible. •Provide adequate performance guarantees and judicial relief of environmental claims.

Advanced technology, including automation and computerized information systems, is being adopted in mining at an ever-increasing rate to improve safety and productivity and to decrease overall costs. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report focuses on the human factors issues related to advanced technology. Among the significant facts discovered were the following: Experts studying tile design adoption, and implementation of new technology have stated repeatedly that human factors specialists should be involved from the early planning stages, through design and fabrication, and up to and during production, since human factors has been consistently identified as the biggest obstacle to the efficient utilization of new technology. Also, middle management is generally the greatest obstacle to the adoption of advanced technology, this technology can give rise to worker alienation, boredom, stress, job insecurity, and a sense of isolation; training most of the present work force is more cost effective than hiring new workers; workers are willing to accept new technology if they are given a voice in its implementation; the social and the technical systems should be jointly optimized; and with the intro¬duction of advanced technology, the cognitive or mental, rather than the physical, aspects of human-machine interaction must be emphasized.

Thermal Treatment Technology Division Albany Research Center, U.S. Dept. of Energy Oregon. This evaluation included a characterization study and direct smelting tests conducted in a bench-scale electric arc furnace (EAF). In contrast to other thermal treatment technologies considered for these wastes (i.e., fluidized bed combustion), direct smelting in the EAF can process 100% of the wastes without prior beneficiation, and utilizes solid oxidant additions (in this case iron ore) rather than air to oxidize the carbon. This solid oxidant addition is advantageous because it results in the production of several value-added furnace products. These products include cast iron resulting from the reduction of the iron oxides, baghouse dust containing virtually all of the zinc from the residues, and a clean (nonhazardous) slag product suitable for recycle as concrete aggregate or construction fill. Offgas from the smelting furnace also holds potential as fuel gas for cogeneration. The direct smelting tests conducted thus far were successful at producing the desired furnace products, exhibiting the potential for complete recycle of the waste pile. A cast iron product of comparable quality to conventional cast irons was produced, at nearly 80% iron recovery to the metal. The slag product was determined to be nonhazardous, based on the EPA TCLP. Lead and zinc partitioning to the dust product was greater than 99%. The material balance over the furnace indicates that for every ton of feed processed, 540 lb. of cast iron, 600 lb. of slag, and 150 lb. of dust would be produced. Energy consumption was roughly 1.10 kWxh/lb of feed material. Prior experience suggests that these figures measured in the bench-scale furnace would translate to 0040 to 0.50 kWxh/lb at the industrial-scale.

Redesigns of the operator compartments on a continuous miner and on a face haulage vehicle are described. The objective was to optimize the compartments within limitations of existing equipment and functional configurations. Both safety and production should be improved through more comfort for the operator and more natural placement of controls. Design guidelines supplied by the Bureau from a previous contract were used along with human factors analyses to determine requirements. Mock-ups were fabricated from layouts and used to refine design details. The new compartments were implemented and the machines evaluated underground. Comments and reactions to both machines were favorable.

Estimation techniques such as polygonal, triangular prism, trapezoid, isopach maps, and inverse distance methods are often used in ore or industrial minerals deposit evaluation. These techniques do not express the variability of the deposit and do not allow a determination of the reliability of the estimates. However, geostatistical methods can express a measure of the error associated with the estimates, by finding weighting coefficients for a given mining block, and can also help with data configuration that minimizes the error. This work addresses an application study on the quality and reserve characteristics of the cement raw materials of the Adana Cement Factory in Adana, Turkey, based on the spatial distribution and variability of the chemical components (Si02, CaO, A1203, Fe203). The study has been carried out using a geostatistical procedure that is useful for site assessment, characterization, and monitoring situations where data are collected spatially. Directional and omnidirectional experimental variograms of the cement raw material variables showed that neither strong geometric nor severe zonal anisotropy exists in the data. The most evident spatial dependence structure expressing the continuity for omnidirectional experimental variograms were characterized by exponential and spherical variogram models. These models have been used in cross¬-validation analysis, which proved that these models, their parameters, and kriging parameters are applicable for the study area. Quality contour maps of the deposits at given levels underground were estimated using a kriging interpolation technique. Anomalies such as bullseyes and drift were not observed in the maps that were generated. Kriged maps showed the spatial distribution of quality continuity and variability of the deposits. Grade-tonnage curves and total tonnage estimates in the particular grade were determined using ordinary kriging in order to improve the mining operation and planning. Consequently, local uncertainty and the probability of extreme values occurring are tools of prime importance for the mine planning, the optimum mix of raw materials coming from different quarry stopes.

Mining operations are generally reluctant to install high-cost sampling systems at operations that have been functioning for many years. The principal objection to installing appropriate equipment to extract correct and representative samples in process flows is the time and costs involved. The Theory of Sampling (TOS) provides a structured framework for identifying and quantifying the errors and bias associated with any sampling event, but this may be insufficient to initiate substantial investment in correctly designed sampling equipment. Financial losses arising from substandard sampling installations are usually disregarded because the value-add from a good quality sampling solution is invisible, but the cost is quite obvious. Depending on the needs, a less-than-perfect or fit-for-purpose sampling solution may be acceptable, provided the magnitude of sampling errors is understood and the assay results are interpreted accordingly. Categorical levels of acceptable accuracy and precision can be established depending on the sampling position in the mining value chain and the nature of the decisions to be made. The objective benefits of proposed fit-for-purpose sampling solutions should be presented to relevant decision-makers in such a way that adverse subjective decisions are countered so that appropriate solutions are implemented. Practical examples of the benefits from motivating the implementation of fit for purpose sampling solutions at sampling facilities around the world are provided.
