This second of a series of reports on the characteristics of commercial aviation gasolines presents inspection test data furni8hed on their products by 15 manufacturers of commercial grades of aviation gasoline and special data obtained in Bureau of Mines laboratories on samples of these gasolines. Data on 18 grade-80, 20 grade-91/98, 20 grade-100/130, and 9 grade-115/145 aviation fuels are presented. These gasolines represent July 1947 production.

Trigger action response plans (TARPs) are inherent to managing multiple hazards such as high gas content with multiple coal seams, high spontaneous combustion propensity, heat and ventilation. TARPs aim to provide assurance and guidance when the situation deviates from the original plan or there is a change in conditions that could be hazardous. Over the years, learnings from various incidents have continuously required coal operations to revisit the TARP trigger values that were based on historical data or guidance values from the industry. In most cases, the background to the basis of TARP statistical data (ie average, maximum, hourly or daily for the monitoring or sampling location) is unknown. The introduction of real-time monitoring devices to monitor gases and airflows has provided greater understanding of the hazard scenarios and their controls. This paper analyses the carbon monoxide data from operating longwall mines and compares these with the historical trigger values to understand the changes and identify improvement opportunities while setting trigger levels in the TARPs. As an example of setting trigger values, those used during the sealing of a panel are explored in terms of setting values based upon the sampling location and the level of risk. It is envisaged that the learnings shared herein will further enhance the understanding and management of multiple hazards in Australian coalmines.CITATION:Belle, B and Cliff, D, 2015. "IntroductionThe Maurice Bay deposit is one of a number of uranium deposits that have been found in recent years in the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan (Tremblay, 1982). This deposit, along with the others, belongs to the unconformity type deposits (Beck, 1977). They are, for the most part, polymetallic, being characterized by a suite of metals which include U, Ni, Co, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn, V, Ag, Au, Pt-group elements, S, As, Bi, Se, Te, and Mo, some of which, besides U, are present in economic concentrations (Amok, 1974; Ruzicka, 1975; Tapaninen, 1976; Hoeve and Sibbald, 1978; Dahlkamp, 1978). The Maurice Bay deposit was known to be a small low grade deposit in which the ore was essentially monomineralic, consisting mainly of pitchblende (Harper, 1978). However, the occurrence of trace amounts of some of the elements common in the larger polymetallic ore bodies (e.g. Key Lake, Cluff Lake D) was anticipated. Thus a lithogeochemical sampling project was undertaken in 1979 across part of the Maurice Bay deposit (Harper, 1979). Major oxides (SiO2, Al2O3, FeO, Fe2O, MgO, CaO, K2O, Na2O, MnO, P2O5, and TiO2) and a group of the most common trace metals (U, Ni, Co, Cu, Pb, As, Au, V, and Se) were analyzed to determine whether any elemental patterns (halos or depletions) could be detected which would reduce the number of pathfinder elements needed for exploration purposes. In addition to the above metals, Th was also checked because some conglomerate strata in the Maurice Bay area are known to be thorium-enriched (Harper, 1978). Only the trace metal distributions will be discussed in detail in this report.General GeologyThe Maurice Bay area is underlain by three major groups of rocks, the White Lake metamorphic complex, an unnamed granodiorite complex, and the Athabasca Group, described previously (Fig. 1; Harper, 1979). Purpose: Marras et al. developed a technique to evaluate sincerity of effort during dynamic trunk motion performance. The validity and reliability of the technique have not been evaluated. Therefore, the objective of this study was to first determine whether or not a sincerity of effort measure correctly identified those giving a sincere effort in a blinded randomized control trial and second to quantify inter-rater and test-retest reliability. Methods: This article reports the findings of a two phase study. In phase one, the blinded evaluation, participants were randomly assigned to either a sincere or insincere performance condition. An examiner tested participants without knowledge of the participant's group membership. In the second phase, two examiners evaluated each participant twice to quantify inter-rater and test-retest reliability. Results: In the blinded phase the specificity was 100% and sensitivity was 90% for identifying sincere and insincere effort, respectively. Phase two results showed no significant difference in probability of sincere effort between raters or between testing sessions. Conclusion: A performance criterion that accurately identifies sincere vs insincere group membership during functional evaluations was identified. There were no significant differences between raters or between testing sessions. These findings indicate that this test is reliable and possesses good predictive validity in assessing sincerity of effort.

"This paper outlines a comprehensive, cost-effective testing program for the acid-ferric sulfate heap leaching of oxide, supergene and primary copper ores. It is based on extensive experience in copper heap leaching and uses the many technological advances in the field developed over the past several decades. The approach described requires firstly a detailed resource evaluation, then a hydrodynamic characterization of representative samples and, finally, a focused metallurgical testing program. The principles communicated here can be applied to other acid leachable minerals. The program varies considerably from conventional testing in its disciplined, orderly, step-by-step approach, its application of hydrological and chemical principles to leaching, and its reliance on fewer, more tightly controlled column tests. The purpose of the test program is to optimize the financial, time and other resources devoted to the program, while minimizing the financial risks to the development company or companies and the project funding providers. IntroductionThe major goal of any process development testing program should be the successful implementation of the project. With respect to heap leaching, the metallurgical testing program plays a critical role in the larger objective, as described in Scheffel (2013, 2014). McNulty’s series of papers (1998, 2004, 2014) confirm that the success of any project is directly proportional to the extent and quality of the testing program on which the process is designed.Therefore, a key development objective is to conduct a well-focused metallurgical test program. While the primary focus of this paper is copper, the acid leaching of any substance would benefit from a similar approach.This paper addresses primarily the sulfate system, which is compatible with the bioleaching of sulfide minerals. Nicol et al. (2011) described the advantages of the chloride leaching of copper sulfide minerals. United States patents Nos. US 2009/0173188 A1, US 8,597,933 B2 and US2015/0232963 A1, assigned to BHP Chile Inc. and BHP Billiton S.A. Ltd, describe methods for both the oxidative and nonoxidative leaching of primary and secondary copper sulfides. Reyes (2013) and Ipinza and Flaquer (2014) described commercial applications of chloride-based heap leaching. The testing disciplines discussed in this paper will also apply to the development of an acidic chloride leaching system."

"Significant energy savings are often possible for centrifugal compressors operating in parallel by improved control strategy and improved instrumentation. Blow-off can usually be reduced by improved surge control combined with a better control strategy for loading and unloading the group of machines. More precise and stable pressure control then becomes possible. This improved control strategy will also decrease the frequency of operation near the dangerous limits of surge or overload or overspeed. A sample station of mixed centrifugal and reciprocating compressors is examined and a substantial energy saving with the recommended control strategy is projected from operating data. Present Operating Conditions of the Compressed Air StationThe Compressor StationThe compressor station described here has three centrifugal compressors and three reciprocating. It supplies a mine in New Brunswick.Compressed Air and Power ConsumptionFigure I and Figure 2 provide graphs of air consumption and pressure changes based on the owner's data.During the typical two-shift operating day (Fig . I) in the non-productive shift (midnight to 8:00 a.m.), the consumption stays at a level of 9,000 SCFM. This corresponds to a pressure of 110 PSIG. Then, after 8:00 a.m ., the air consumption starts to increase and th e pressure decreases. Around 10:00 a.m., the consumption reaches its maximum level at 97 PSIG. Around II :30 a.m., the air consumption starts to decrease because of the production drop during the lunch break of the first shift. Pressure increases again up to 109 PSIG. After the break, consumption rises to its maximum level over 16,000 SCFM andpressure drops to 97 PSIG.Around 2:30 p.m., the air consumption drops sharply to 9,000 SCFM because of the production decrease to zero level. This drop results from changing of shifts. The pressure at this time increases again up to 110 PSIG. The second shift (2:30 to II :30 p.m.) is an alogous to the first.During the three-shift operating day, the break around 4:00 . a.m . and the shift change around 6:30 a.m. cause sharp drops in air consumption. The pressure for almost the entire night shift stays near 110 PSIG because the station is working with blowing-off even under the maximum consumption. The analysis of Figures I and 2 shows that the pressure varies with the air consumption changes. During non -productive time (non-production shifts , shift changes and breaks) or during the night shift, the total station capacity is proportional to the discharge pressure. One of the common methods of increasing recovery of oil from partly depleted oil sands is to inject natural gas, air, or air-gas mixtures into the sand, thereby supplying energy to move oil. into the well bore. Where natural gas is not available, air or an air-gas mixture is used as the repressuring medium. Air-gas mixtures are obtained from the casingheads of oil-producing wells in the areas repressured with air or air-gas mixtures and consist usually of varying amounts of the hydrocarbon gases, nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. Laboratory experiments have been conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effect of air on crude oils.4/ In these experiments the crude oils were oxidized by the air, and the degree of oxidation depended not only upon the chemical composition of the crude oil but also upon the duration and method of contact between the oil and air, the temperature of the fluids and the concentration of the oxygen. The purpose of this paper is to review the circumstances which led to the formation of this new research association and to discuss its general objectives. Records show that systematic water flooding was begun as early as 1935 in Greenwood County and in 1937 in Butler County. Water flooding on some earlier projects in Greenwood County were described in a Bureau of Mines Report of Investigation.2/ This report presents a discussion of 4 projects -2 in Butler County, 1 in Greenwood County, and 1 in Butler and Greenwood Counties. The location of these projects is shown in figure 1. The projects have been in operation 6 to 12 years and have recovered about 6.6 million barrels of additional oil from the injection of 84.7 million barrels of water. Three of the projects take advantage of the elevation of the nearby hilly terrain, and water from the treating ponds flows by gravity through the filters into the clear-water tanks. By utilizing gravity flow, fewer pumps and less electrical energy is required, resulting in more economical operation.

Artisanal mining is a rudimentary activity that today attracts over 30 million people in virtually all developing countries around the world. As the price of gold has steadily increased over the past decade, 15 million people have become involved in extracting this metal in 55 countries. Individuals have switched to mining from primary industrial sectors such as agriculture to increase their income. These workers generally have little capital, low education levels, and no previous experience in mining. Together with a lack of technical support from governments, these factors lead to disorganized and informal mining activities that generate environmental and social chaos. The absence of technical knowledge and capital has caused a proliferation of Gold Ore Processing Centres (GOPCs) around the world established by local entrepreneurs, who provide a way for miners to process their ores using amalgamation for a fee that is relatively low to non-existent. Gold recovery by the independent miners rarely exceeds 30 % and gold-rich tailings are left at GOPC facilities as a form of payment. GOPCs recover around 90 % of the remaining gold using cyanidation, flotation, and amalgamation, without any compensation paid to the miners. In processing these mercury (Hg)-contaminated tailings, Hg cyanide complexes are produced that are dumped into aquatic environments, leading to rapid bioaccumulation of Hg by fish. In the town of Portovelo, Ecuador, the establishment of partnerships between GOPC entrepreneurs and artisanal miners has proven to be successful in forming legal small-mining companies to create more equity and reduce pollution. About 108 GOPCs operate in Portovelo-Zaruma, with 40 % of these still working illegally without proper regulation and permitting. Over 20 % of these GOPCs continue to use grinding, concentrating and amalgamating of the gold, with 58 % performing cyanidation of tailings and/or gravity concentrates, and 15 % combining flotation with cyanidation. About 94 % of the GOPCs concentrate the ore prior to applying amalgamation, which significantly reduces Hg emissions to the environment. Incorporating flotation has given the operators increased skills in mineral recovery, with the side benefit of producing a copper concentrate as added value. Despite these innovations, mineral recovery is still inefficient, and waste management is a major challenge in creating true sustainability in this sector (technical efficiency together with social and environmental responsibilities). Further organization, training and capacity-building are needed. The principles of Lean Manufacturing Methods ("Just in Time" production and "Automation") are suggested as possible techniques to assist small GOPCs to become sustainable. In this concept, a larger mining company can become associated with artisanal miners in a partnership to provide training and investment for exploitation of small deposits that would be infeasible as a single large operation. As well, an International Training Centre for Artisanal Miners (ITCAM) is being established in Portovelo with collaboration of the Government of Ecuador to further enhance and upgrade mining activities in this region. ITCAM will provide artisanal miners with technical, business and environmental training to become responsible small-scale miners. In building this new capacity, ITCAM intends to create an atmosphere of trust to attract private and corporate investors to become partners with artisanal miners.

The flotation of Azara barite tailings was investigated using crude rubber nut oil (RNOc), refined rubber nut oil (RNOR) and oleic acid as fatty acid collectors. Chemical characterization of the rubber nut oils indicated high acidity, high saponification values and high iodine indexes, which are indicative of a high fatty acid compositions. The Azara barite tailings analyzed 64.6% BaSO4 by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Gravity and magnetic separation techniques yielded a BaSO4 concentrate with a grade of 74.8% and a recovery of 92.5%. Barium sulfate grades of 90.0%, 92.8% and 94.8% with recoveries of 80.3%, 85.4% and 86.7% were achieved with collector dosages of 750g/t crude rubber nut oils, refined rubber nut oils and oleic acid, respectively. Hence, rubber nut oils are effective fatty acid collectors for the flotation of barite tailings.

This paper presents the case history of a comprehensive geotechnical investigation for the Crosstown Transport Facility, a 10,880 m long, 3.2 m diameter pressure tunnel proposed for construction in San Francisco, California. The proposed tunnel would be part of the City and County of San Francisco's Clean Water Program, and its purpose would be to convey stormwater and sewage from the east side of the City to the Pacific Ocean. Tunneling conditions were defined by surface geologic mapping, 94 exploratory borings, surface and borehole geophysics, aquifer testing, Goodman Jack testing, pressuremeter testing, and laboratory testing. Through the use of advanced coring techniques and a strictly controlled drilling fluid system, core recovery averaged 90 percent in the sheared and fractured rock of the Franciscan Formation. As a result, over 1,400 linear meters of rock core was recovered and is available for examination.

There are several ways in which to classify refractories. The most suitable one is based on their general composition or raw material content. The categories are: 1. Aluminosilicate brick which include the fire clays and alumina and high alumina raw materials. 2. Basic brick which includes magnesia and chrome ore alone and in various combinations. 3. Silica brick which uses gannister or high purity gravels and sands. 4. Insulating brick are generally of the aluminosilicate type but may be most all refractory raw materials. 5. Special refractories are made from raw materials of zircon, zirconia, ultra high alumina, silicon carbide, fusion cast products, chromic oxide, carbon and graphite. The raw materials that make up these different categories are what we are briefly going to consider. Emphasis is placed more on the most important raw materials.

It has been reported in the literature that there is a substantial economic incentive for removing sulfur from coal. Therefore, U. s. Steel initiated an investigation to determine the feasibility of lowering the sulfur content of its Pittsburgh-seam coal. Preliminary crushing and washability studies on a representa-tive sample indicated that substantial sulfur reductions could be attained. Figure 1 shows the effect of the top size of a given coal sample on the sulfur content of the float-l.45 specific-gravity fraction of coal. At a top size of 3 inches, the raw-coal sulfur content of 2.32 percent was reduced to 1.64 percent. Crushing to a top size of 20 mesh reduced the raw-coal sulfur to 1.25 percent. Below a top size of one inch, the sulfur content decreased rapidly as top size was decreased. Figure 2 shows the effect of specific gravity of separation on pyritic sulfur. Normally this coal has an organic-sulfur content of approximately 1 percent. As expected, pyritic sulfur was reduced as the separating gravity was lowered for all the various size fractions shown. The rate of decrease in pyritic sulfur was gradual above 1.45 specific gravity, but great below 1.45. Greater sulfur reductions were attained on the coarser sizes with decreasing

A roasting-leaching process has been developed for concentrating platinum group metals (PGM) from a PGM-containing ferroalloy. The optimized roasting conditions used a NaOH-to-ferroalloy mass ratio of 1.2 at 600 °C for 2 h. The roasted product mainly comprised Na4SiO4, NaFeO2 and Fe2O3. The iron oxide and sodium silicate associated with the roasted product were leached in water and dilute sulfuric acid solution, while the PGM was concentrated in the acid-leached residue. A PGM concentration of 23.4% was obtained with assaying, and the concentration factor of PGM from the ferroalloy to PGM concentration was greater than 9.

"As the amount of ferrous scrap increases every year, it becomes more and more urgent to deal with this iron-bearing resource properly. This paper puts forward a method on resource-oriented utilization of ferrous scrap (cold-bonded pelletizing), and these cold-bonded pellets can be used as coolant in a converter. The influence on the pellets qualities by using different kinds of chloride as rust agents is studied, and results show that the strength of cold-bonded pellets increases significantly by using a combination of the three kinds of chloride -NaCl,MgClz,FeCh, their best dosages are 1.2%, 0.2%, 0.1% respectively. Other iron-bearing materials also have an effect upon the pellets strength, by adding 5% iron powder and maintaining for 48h, the compressive strength of the clumps surpass 2500N/A, dropping strength surpass 4 times/ A, and 10% iron slag or 20% steel slag can replace 5% iron powder while obtaining the comparative quality. The influence of different ratios of three ferrous scrap (converter mud, iron scale and dust) is further studied, and results show that when the ratio is 30% : 30% : 40%, the pellet strength reaches the maximum. After maintaining for 24~48h, the clumps can meet the mechanical as well as the physical-chemical requirements as BOF steelmaking refrigerant.IntroductionGreat amounts of converter mud, dust and iron scale are produced in steel production process. These materials are of great values, and their accumulation not only leads to environmental pollution, but also wastes the precious resources, which restricts the sustainable development of the steel industry [1,2] The main approach at present to dealing with the ferrous scrap is to add them into sintering. But in this way, the utilization factor of sintering and the quality of sinter decline while the energy consumption increases [3].Therefore, more advanced and efficient technology is needed to make the best of these iron resources. Cold consolidation of ferrous scrap is a simple process that has many advantages such as less investment, quicker effect, lower energy and lower cost [4-5] But the conventional maintaining period is too long, usually up to four-six weeks, and the pellet strength is low. Therefore, the key points of the cold-bonded pelletizing are to develop a new adhesive [4,5] to shorten the natural maintenance cycle and to improve the strength of the pellets. A method on resource-oriented utilization of ferrous scrap (cold-bonded pelletizing) is brought forward, and these cold-bonded pellets can be used as coolant in converter. After maintaining for 48h, these cold-bonded pellets can satisfy the mechanical requirements to replace the converter coolant [6]."

Today, with the popularity of joint ventures, custom milling contracts and process audits by specialists, not knowing is a formula for trouble! Good Sampling Systems are no longer considered a luxury' Not too long ago the practice of grab sampling was considered acceptable and became the norm. Today, it is rare to hear metallurgists say, "All I need is a trend not a good representative sample. so I'll just grab a sample every few hours." Buyers and sellers of quality products have found that grab sampling leads to poor partnerships'
