The La Colosa, Colombia porphyry gold deposit is currently in the pre-feasibility stage. This large deposit has many types of gold mineralization: native gold, electrum, and tellurides. These variations in the gold mineralization lead to variability in the gold recovery. The final process flowsheet may include gravity concentration with cyanide leaching. Metallurgical testwork is utilized to identify the zones of ore that may be problematic to recover. To help select the samples that represent the fluctuating variability zones, geometallurgical models are constructed using mineralogy and geology data. These zones are then wireframed and compared to the geological and structural models for spatial correlation. Samples for the variability testwork will be selected from these different zones to identify and analyse the effect the different gold mineralization types have on the recovery. By using geometallurgy to aid in the sample selection for metallurgical testwork, the variability in the ore body can be understood and constrained to aid in process optimization.

Refractory/metal interactions and associated reactions are significant during casting as they can lead to inclusion formation. High-temperature interactions between aluminosilicate refractories and molten steel were studied in the present investigation using the sessile drop method. The changes in the contact angles between molten iron with well-defined oxygen levels and substrates of silica, mullite (3Al2O3?2SiO2) as well as commercial refractories were measured in the dynamic mode. In all cases, the reaction led to slag formation. The experiments were performed under isothermal conditions at 1823 and 1873 K. A known and constant oxygen partial pressure was imposed above the iron drop, through appropriate CO-CO2-Ar mixtures. For all substrates, the contact angles started decreasing due to the lowering of the surface tension of iron, as oxygen was imposed on to the system. When a critical level of oxygen was reached, slag started forming at the drop/substrate interface and at this stage, the contact angle dropped suddenly. Subsequent behaviour of silica and mullite was observed to be different, with SiO2showing a non-wetting behaviour. In the case of SiO2substrate, there were also deep erosions along the periphery of the drops and there was slag accumulation at the sides of the metal drop, probably due to Marangoni flow and/or SiO(g) formation. SEM and EDS analysis of the substrates revealed that the formed slag was fayalite. The thermodynamic criteria for slag formation and possible mechanisms of the reaction are discussed in the light of the experiments. Slags and fluxes used in metallurgical processes are typically made up of oxides (especially silicates), with additions of fluoride and carbonaceous matter. Despite the efforts made towards understanding the role of slags in various processes, little information is available on the structure of these slags. Tools such as X-ray diffraction, spectroscopy, and electron microscopy could be used for this purpose. This paper is based on an ongoing spectroscopic and structural investigation of slags and related materials. Spectroscopic studies of various commercial slags (predominantly ferrous), ores, glass and related materials, covering a wide range of compositions, have been carried out to understand the structure. The infrared spectra were recorded, predominantly, using FTIR spectrometer (Bruker IFS 66U) spanning 4000 to 100 cm-1using the KBr pellet method. The resolution was typically 4 cm-1. The spectral outputs have been compiled in terms of bands present (corresponding to different bonds) and then compared with the typical bands expected for such bonds. Efforts are in progress to identify the trends with respect to the chemical composition?for example, the effects of SiO2, Al2O3, and non-bridging oxygens. Data obtained so far indicate some trends such as (i) a shift in the Si-O band (969 to 1099 cm-1) towards a higher wave number with increasing silica content (almost 2 to 92 weight percentage) and (ii) further strong shifts as a function of the alumina content. "The worldwide demand of iron ore and the depletion of the high-purity deposits make it necessary to recover ores in increasingly fine size fractions or low Fe content in the feed material. Impurities for Iron ore processing plants are mainly Silica, Al2O3 and Sulfides.There is a copper processing plant in Chile, which has a high content of Fe in its tailings. These tailings will be re-processed to recover the Fe and to produce a pellet feed concentrate. This challenging flotation process was developed by the customer in his own laboratory. Different flotation technologies were tested. The best results were achieved with the PNEUFLOT® (PNEUmatic FLOTation). For a feed capacity of approximately 600 t/h, a flow sheet of two flotation lines with a reverse two-stage Amine-Silica flotation followed by a single stage reverse Xanthate Pyrite flotation was developed.Because of the two impurities the process control is very critical. Not even the reagent dosing has to be flexible for changes in the feed material; also the flotation cell has to be adaptable. Continuous development of the PNEUFLOT® cell with their specific advantages and the elimination of dysfunctions in the PNEUFLOT® cell have led to a growing demand of this type of equipment worldwide for the iron ore industry within the past years.INTRODUCTIONThe worldwide increasing demand of iron ore is mainly caused by China. This has a major impact on all economics worldwide as the metal price indicates. However, not even the iron ore and steel price, but all other commodities prices and the precious metals prices are increasing by a high percentage. Figure 1 shows the iron ore (pellets) price increase for Fe and the import of iron ore by China. Figure 2 shows the imports of iron ore to China."

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Eng (Min. Eng.) degree A study was conducted to investigated and compare the feasibility of two single level extraction layouts for an intact part of theorebody of the De Beers diamond mine, Koffiefontein. Two layouts were chosen and the tonnage profile, development schedule and production ring blast layouts were calculated by applying the information acquired through a literature study. Current principles used on the mine were also applied. The first layout chosen is described as a simple straightforward layout with 6 production tunnels spaced 15 m apart, and is referred to as Layout A. The second layout, named Layout B, is described as a complex chevron layout with 9 production tunnels spaced 15 m apart. This layout has a rim tunnel situated in the kimberlite ground, which is called a chevron and this made the layout more complex than Layout A. By comparing the financial results of the two layouts, it was found that Layout B is a more feasible option than Layout A. Sensitivity analyses show that both layouts are extremely sensitive to the revenue of the projects. Therefore it is recommended that Layout B can prove to be a source of additional tonnage to add to the total tonnage profile of the mine and to extend the life of mine by 20 months, only if certain financial/economic factors improve. There is, however, still some areas of the project that need to be investigated.

BATMINÖ, BATMINEÖ, BATMINDÖ are an abbreviation for Business Analysis Tools for Mining, Mine Evaluation and Mine Design respectively. BATMINP are proprietary tools customised to suit individual client requirements. The first suite of tools provides for analysis and evaluation of open pit mining equipment alternatives and includes fleet selection, fleet sizing and production, productivity and economic outcomes. The models address all mine process activities including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling and auxiliary services. All models are built to provide for simultaneous evaluation of multiple alternatives that are time and condition related. Provision is made for modelling from first principles and/or default or shortcut inputs. Sensitivities to key input parameters are easily performed and consistent logic is applied throughout the process. The models are built to provide key outputs in a format suitable for presentation and documentation. Provision is also made in the models for validation of both inputs and outputs through benchmarking, back analysis and budget comparison. The same models can be used for short interval (12 month) planning and control, medium-term (three to five years) and long-term life-of-mine (LOM) planning. Millions of dollars are spent each year on mining plant and equipment. Decisions that impact on the medium and long-term are made. BATMINP tools have been used to perform studies with good results and in most cases the studies have been validated through back analysis and comparing model outcomes to real data.

In this study, we focused the shock wave propagating in case as confinement factor. Therefore, the objective of this study was to obtain a better understanding of the influence of shock wave propagating in case on the detonation characteristics of explosives in laboratory scale.

"The design/optimization of the pump and cyclones to maximize grinding circuit efficiency first requires a concise understanding of, and clearly defined specifications for, desired grinding circuit performance. Subsequently, the pump and cyclone performances that provide the desired grinding circuit performance can be defined. Once the performance requirements of each process unit are determined, selection of physical equipment parameters that will deliver those performances can be carried out.The Functional Performance Equation shows that there are two distinct efficiencies in closed circuit ball milling. One of these, “Circuit Classification System Efficiency” (CSE), is the fraction of “coarse” material inside the ball mill upon which grinding energy is deliberately expended, versus the remaining fraction of “fines” or finished size material inside the mill, upon which grinding energy is wasted (on over-grinding). The role of the pump and cyclones is to maximize CSE, which is the desired grinding circuit performance. The obtainable target CSE for any given circuit can be estimated, for example, by referring to a plant data base of CSE’s. Design/optimization guidelines then allow us to specify the pump and cyclone performances that will achieve the target CSE.This paper outlines the step-by-step, systematic method of pump and cyclone selection which maximizes CSE. Numerous examples of its successful application are provided.THE FUNCTIONAL PERFORMANCE EQUATIONObservation of the feed and product size distributions going into and discharging from the mill in grinding circuits with low versus high circulating load ratios initially led to the definition of “Circuit Classification System Efficiency” (or CSE, McIvor, 1988a), and subsequently the discovery of the Functional Performance Equation (McIvor, 1988b; McIvor et al, 1992). The CSE is the fraction or percentage of “coarse” (usually in reference to the plus P80) size material inside the mill, versus “fines” or product size material finer than the circuit P80. It can be readily calculated by taking the average of the percentage of said coarse material in the mill feed and mill discharge streams. As this also represents the percentage of the mill energy expended on targeted, coarse size material, it is directly proportional to overall grinding circuit efficiency and production rate. This is all clearly expressed in the Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits, for which the derivation has often been presented (e.g. McIvor, 2006)."

The Lac des Iles Mine (LDI) is located approximately 100 km northwest of Thunder Bay, ON. The mine has been in operation since 1993. The initial mine production was 2,300 mtpd and increased to 15,000 mtpd following a mine expansion project that was completed in 2001. Effective Oct. 29, 2008, LDI was shut-down under care and maintenance due to low metal prices. Prior to shutting down, LDI was the only primary PGM deposit in operation in Canada and of the few found globally. The complex geology and physical properties of the deposit causes several challenges for the concentrator. This paper will discuss the solutions to the main challenges of attaining nameplate tonnage and achieve satisfactory Pd recovery and concentrate grades.

Adaptations and redesign of the existing already very successful and proven road milling machine concept and technical innovations such as an optimized, specifically for mining application developed cutting drum, cutting housing design and cutting tools, high manoeuvrability achieved via a tight turning radius, a three disk clutch system and a cutting drum drive that allows for the acceptance of higher loads, a complete reinforcement of the chassis to withstand higher vibrations and torque, the installation of increased engine power via a modern drive unit, a specifically for mining/construction applications developed operator’s platform and finally a redesigned air intake system and the adaptation of the levelling system resulted in far more cost effective and advantageous capabilities of Wirtgen Surface Miner in soft to medium hard mining and construction applications. As the achieved results show for the first time in modern surface mining history mechanized cutting is capable to compete successfully against traditional drill, blast/ripping and other conventional mining methods.

The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) was developed 10 years ago to fill the gap between geologic characterization and engineering design. It combines many years of geologic studies in underground coal mines with world-wide experience with rock mass classification systems. Like other classification systems, the CMRR begins with the premise that the structural competence of mine roof rock is determined mainly by the discontinuities that weaken the rock fabric. However, the CMRR is specifically designed for bedded coal measure rock. Since its introduction, the CMRR has been incorporated into many aspects of mine planning, including longwall pillar design, roof support selection, feasibility studies, extended-cut evaluation, and others. It has also become truly inter-national, with involvement in mine designs and funded research projects in South Africa, Canada, and Australia. This paper discusses the sources used in developing the CMRR, describes the CMRR data collection and calculation procedures, and briefly presents a number of practical mining applications in which the CMRR has played a prominent role.

Complexation of a metal ion to a ligand often results in structural changes that introduce steric strain within the ligand. A design criterior:1 for ligands that will complex metal ions more strongly is to choose Iigar:1d architecture, that minimizes this strain. This paper describes how molecular mechanics models can be used to define the degree of ligand binding site organization in terms of' ,strain energies associated with conformational reorganization and distortion of the binding conformer. This approach yields a method to predict how modifications to ligand structure will affect metal binding affinity.

In the case of a reservoir where the oil underlies a large gas cap and overlies bottom water, production can be inzproved considerably if wells are perforated below the water-oil contact rather than opposite the oil-bearing section. The theoretical arguments for this improvement, which in some cases may be tenfold, are supported by experimental evidence. INTRODUCTION Reservoirs frequently consist of one sand body containing an oil layer underlying a thick, gas-bearing section and overlying bottom water (Fig. 1). Wells in such reservoirs are customarily opened up opposite the oil-bearing interval or, rather, opposite the lower part of this interval (Fig. 2). More often than not, it is inefficient or prohibited to blow off large quantities of gas with the oil. This im-psses a severe limitation on the drawdown, which results in low oil-production rates. Because of the small difference in specific gravity between oil and water, the latter will easily cone upwards, so that the production of water together with the oil is not prevented by this completion method. In such a situation wells should be opened deeper, in the originally water-bearing zone. The gas can be shut off by not perforating over the upper part of the interval (Fig. 3) or by a tubing hung close to the bottom of the interval (Fig. 4). Initially much water will be produced, but when steady-state conditions have been established (as depicted in Figs. 3 and 4) larger drawdowns are permissible than in a conventionally completed well, and correspondingly higher oil-production rates will result. Water cuts are only slightly higher because of the small effect of gravity on the water-oil flow distribution. CALCULATIONS The ratio of improvement has been estimated by means of approximate calculations. The completion depicted in Fig. 4 is the most convenient basis for these calculations. By postulating that vertical flow gradients can be disregarded, the Appendix shows that the well-known Dupuit formula can be obtained except for some complication due to the presence of two fluids rather than one. The Appendix makes the reasonable assumption that, for suitable boundary conditions, the oil layer occupies a constant fraction of the total fluid height throughout the reservoir. The oil- and water-production rates can thus be related to the liquid levels in the borehole as follows:

"Over the past decade or so, our efforts have focused on developing the rationale and concepts for new technology in reagent development and optimization in the processing of base and precious metals. A major outcome of these efforts have been the development of a novel family of collectors, principally driven by the MAXGOLD® and Aero XD-5002® chemistries, for precious metals recovery from primary Au ores and Cu-Au ores. These chemistries was developed to be robust to address the complex mineralogy and gold deportment in these ores. Plant trial data for a variety of ores have confirmed that the both Aero® XD-5002 and MAXGOLD® chemistry are indeed versatile in recovering gold values occurring as gold alloys and/or associated with many types of sulfides, and in altering the deportment of certain sulfides (such as those bearing As, Bi etc). An overview will be given in this paper using plant data to highlight the application of these reagents.INTRODUCTIONThe subject matter of this paper is the flotation of Au containing minerals from their ores. The motivation from this manuscript comes from the several challenges faced with the processing of Au ores, as was articulated in detail by Nagaraj (2008). The biggest challenge is the complex mineralogy; most easy-to-treat free-milling ores bodies are largely depleted. The Au values are distributed in multiple host minerals such as pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite and Cu minerals such as chalcopyrite. Au values also happen to be finely disseminated within the various minerals and are sometimes invisible in optical microscopy. Additionally, on any given day, some mines treat multiple ore types, and the mineralogy is different for each ore type.Xanthates continue to be the collectors of choice at most Au and PGM operations around the world. Most primary Au operations tend to consume very large amounts of collectors; the dosage ranges anywhere between 40-400 g/t and this has been attributed to both mineralogical and non-mineralogical factors (non-mineralogical factors include the low cost of xanthates and the mindset that “more is always better”, which is not necessarily the case). In addition, several studies now show that xanthates alone are never sufficient where multiple value minerals are present, and that supplementary collectors are required. The large doses present a substantial cost to the minerals industry, and many mining companies have expressed the need for more efficient reagents that can improve metallurgical performance at low dosages."

One of the manifestations of the dynamically induced failures in deep coal mines is the violent ejection of coal from the ribs. A possible protection against such failures is the use of a specifically designed dynamic support system with reinforcement units having the sufficient capacity to absorb the kinetic energy of the dynamic failure and a skin support that can adequately contain the disintegrated coal. With this method of mitigation in mind, a recently introduced yielding rock bolt, trade name Roofex, has been identified (Harvey and Ozbay, 2009) as a possible energy absorbing component of a dynamic support system. According to the manufacturer?s specification, the Roofex bolts can yield 300 mm (or more) displacement while holding 80 kN pull load. In order to assess the performance of this support unit in coal ribs, a series of in situ pull tests performed in two coal mines in Colorado. The results show that, under conventional pull test loading conditions, Roofex yielding bolts perform very close to their claimed specifications, thus showing a potential for their use as the main energy absorbing component of a dynamic support system. Further studies are required to confirm the in situ performance of these bolts under dynamic loading conditions and also to develop a containment component for a dynamic support system for the mitigation of dynamic coal rib failures.
