This paper describes the methods of mining and washing brown iron are in 1957 at the Sawyer mine, leased by Wayne County Mining Co., and the Fore mine, leased by Four Mining Co., both in southern Missouri; it is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on mining and milling methods and costs in various districts of the United States. The Sawyer mine is in Wayne County, about 10 miles north-northeast of Williamsville (fig. 1); the Fore mine is in Howell County, about 20 miles southwest of West Plains (fig. 2). Both are open-pit mines from which the crude are was upgraded by washing and hand-sorting to produce are of grade and quality suitable for sale to operators of iron and steel furnaces. The operations described are typical of many others that produce or have produced marketable brown iron are from small sedimentary deposits, several hundred of which outcrop on the crests or hill sides of southern Missouri (fig. 3). The 1957 production of marketable brown iron are by 40 separate operations in the southern part of the State was 281,427 wet long tons, valued at $1,637,243. Production from the Sawyer mine that year was 17,000 dry long tons of washed are, and from the Fore mine, 20,816 dry long tons.

Analysis and example applications have been performed to compare the accuracy and computing speed of alternating-direction explicit and implicit procedures (ADEP and ADIP) in numerical solution of reservoir fluid flow problems. ADIP yields significantly greater accuracy and requires about 60 per cent more computing time than ADEP, not 300 or 500 per cent more as reported elsewhere. l,2 INTRODUCTION Several recent papers 1-3 discuss an alternating-direction explicit difference approximation (ADEP) to the diffusion equation. Example applications of ADEP and ADIP4 were reported to support conclusions that ADEP is comparable in accuracy to ADIP and requires one-fifth to one-third the computing time of ADIP. Applications of ADEP in calculation of two-phase flow in reservoirs was also proposed. 3 This study was performed to compare further the relative merits of ADEP and ADIP in simulation of two-dimensional flow of one and two fluid phases in reservoirs. Since two-phase flow equations are often essentially elliptic rather than parabolic, the efficiency of ADEP in solving the elliptic equation was also examined.

INTRODUCTION The solid fossil and nuclear fuels, but especially uranium, are given prominent, indeed leading, roles by energy experts in most long range estimates of world energy futures. Optimistic forecasts are inspired partly by the disproportionately large solid fuels resource base compared to present rates of consumption or to oil and gas resources, and partly by the vision of inexpensive high technology applications. Such a view overlooks the fact that while resource- use disparities and new technologies give allure to the promise of the solid fuels, they do not guarantee cheap solutions to the basic problems of solid fuel uses: viz., their relatively difficult conditions for efficient ignition and control, including the management of environmentally acceptable residuals disposal. Contrary to the varied versions of this optimistic hypothesis, this paper shows that a great many persistent economic and technical problems interfere with such a simple inference. These act as constraints which qualify or dispute much of the national energy policy based on existing modeling of solid fuel requirements and optimistic engineering evaluations. The assumptions and techniques of such exercises are sometimes at fault. As often as not, however, the distortions created in open market fuel com- petition due to misdirected national energy policies themselves are to blame for misdirected efforts. A number of interesting implications result. Among them are the distinct possibility that the low technology applications will dominate, so that more direct coal and less synfuel or nuclear use will occur; that, accordingly, exhaustion rates for uranium will be low, that the most extensive growth of solid fuel through 2000 will be in conventional pulverized coal cumbustors, and that the traded share of the world coal bum will be much larger than predicted. These trends will place much more pressure on oil and gas prices than forecast by most experts. On the way to these findings the paper demonstrates that solid fuel resource adequacy in situ, balanced against the projections of demands as capacity requirements, mean little as conventionally measured by years to exhaustion or potential supply schedules. Indeed, all stock concepts of demand requirements or of fuel re- sources must be tied to the paths of the unit costs and the deliverable prices of all substitute fuels and systems over time. This requires a dynamic analysis of supply and demand, integrated with geological and engineering constraints, to provide insights into the multiple modes of market and product substitution. Market forces rather than technical promise will determine the allocation of the solid fuels. Moreover, the equilibrium paths of individual fuel prices and market shares are not easily simulated by general or network models, and decision makers will continue to rely on the partial, local comparison of alternatives in their choices of fuel systems at any time. 'The economics of the solid fuels differs from that of other energy sources in important ways relating to their form in use, conversion efficiency, (dis)economies and externalities. "INTRODUCTION Recovery of core specimens from subsurface formations and their subsequent analysis are important aids in efficient development and operation of oil and gas fields. Gore specimens first were obtained mainly for the geologic information they revealed; now they are analyzed to determine many of the physical characteristics and conditions of the subsurface formations as well. Cores recovered from the producing formations may be analyzed for porosity, permeability, oil content, ""connate"" water content, and other physical and chemical properties of the formation, all to the end of furnishing enough data for making reliable estimates of the quantity and avail¬ability of oil and as within a reservoir and in devising efficient means for their withdrawal.Examination of bottom-hole samples of oil gives valuable information concerning the amount of gas in solution in the oil within the reservoir and the resultant shrinkage of the oil when the gas is released. Producing characteristics of reservoirs nay be determined by means of subsurface pressure and temperature gages and measurements male at the wellhead; however, unless reliable core analyses are available, these data have only limited use in any quantitative study of reserves. In such a study the quantity of oil, gas, and water contained in a unit volume of the reservoir formation is extremely important. Although reliable methods of analyzing cores have been developed and the data thus obtained are valuable, their applications become more limited or reservoirs at higher temperatures and pressures are discovered. This condition results almost entirely from the fact that in recovering a core from a formation of high pressure and temperature by present methods a large part of the fluid content of the core is lost or contaminated to an unknown extent. For a number of years most petroleum engineers have held that if this loss and contamination of the fluid content of a core were eliminated, the value of core analyses would be increased greatly."

This study is an appraisal of the feasibility of recovery and the possible chemical and physical uses of the limestone from the Greenbrier Formation in western West Virginia. Data on minability, occurrence, quality, and markets were obtained from published and unpublished sources and by a limited mail survey combined with personal contacts. The estimated costs of recovery by deep mining techniques are considerably higher than competitive surface and shallow subsurface operations. Compositional in formation available for this study was limited but indicated the suitability of the limestone for most physical uses and some chemical process uses in appraisal of the uses and demand reveals that immediate markets may be difficult to establish, but for some uses long-term prospects may be encouraging, especially if the quality of limestone would be suitable for lime manufacture or use as metallurgical fluxstone.

No estado do RN o êxodo da população residente na zona rural para a zona urbana ocorre de forma ainda acentuada, tendo como agravante o ciclo de secas periódicas. Outro problema do estado é a desertificação, que vem tomando proporções maiores ao longo dos anos, e em algumas regiões específicas, gera relevante preocupação ambiental, uma vez que as cerâmicas ali presentes utilizam a vegetação local como combustível nos fornos de tecnologia tradicional. Embora se tenha consciência deste problema, pouco se percebe em termos de iniciativa para saná-lo, uma vez que o setor é marcado pela baixa tecnologia empregada. Uma alternativa para a construção de residências para a população de baixo poder aquisitivo é a utilização de tijolos feitos de solo-cimento. O solo-cimento é uma mistura íntima e bem proporcionada de solo com cimento Portland, de tal modo que haja uma estabilização daquele por este, melhorando as propriedades da mistura. O tijolo feito de solo-cimento é caracterizado por um menor custo final que o tradicional e pela baixa agressão ao meio ambiente, uma vez que não é queimado. Neste trabalho foram produzidos tijolos de terra crua misturada com cimento (20% a 30%) e compactados em prensa manual. Foram realizados análises dos materiais empregados e de resistência à compressão dos tijolos produzidos. Verificou-se que o tijolo de solo-cimento possui resistência a compressão dentro das normas e facilidade de fabricação, proporcionado assim uma solução alternativa para o setor.

The New Haven Meeting. As already announced in special circular, the XCVIth meeting of the institute for the reading and discussion of papers will be held at New Haven, Conn., beginning Feb. 23, 1909. The Secretary of the Local Committee is Prof. J. D. Irving, Box D, Yale Station, New Haven. The program embraces visits to many interesting works in New Haven, Ansonia, Bridgeport, etc. The leading topics for discussion at the sessions will lie: The Conservation of Natural Resources; A Sea-Level Canal at Panama; and The Technical Education of Mining Engineers. But papers on other subjects also are announced. Lt is probable that a supplementary session of this meeting, will be held in New York City, at some time during March, 1909, as a joint session with other national engineering societies, for the farther discussion of the subject of The Conservation of Natural Resources. A Pacific Coast Meeting. It is now reasonably certain that the XCVIIth meeting will be held oil the Pacific Coast, including a. visit to the Exposition at Seattle, and various other points en. route going or coming, depending upon the route and program finally adopted. It is of upmost importance to keep the size of the program to a minimum for the computer being used. One way is to reduce the size of the data bank by adjusting the large common array A in the main program (page, line 32) and the statement following the assignment of A. The current value of A is 35001 and is optimized for the UNIVAC computer with 5,000 words of useable storage. Another way to reduce the required storage is to overlay the program. That is, to have in the computer only the subroutines which are being used. In large finite element codes, overlays or segmentation of the program is a necessity. The code presented here has three levels of segments and are presented graphically in the tree in Figure D-1.

Abstract-Gahnite, a zinc-bearing spinel, is a resistate mineral that may be used as an indicator mineral of polymetallic deposits in high-grade metamorphic terrain. The Ontario Geological Survey recently completed surficial mapping and sampling programs in the Separation Lake area of northwestern Ontario and Kinniwabi Lake area of northeastern Ontario in which gahnite was recovered from samples of surficial sediments. Ternary plots of the composition (ZnO, MgO, FeO[t]) of gahnite recovered from these surficial studies reveal three distinct groups: Group 1 is characterized by low (< 1 wt%) MgO values; Group 2 by higher (>1 wt%) MgO values; and Group 3 by higher FeO(t) values than Groups 1 and 2. The composition of in situ gahnite recovered from volcanogenic massive sulfide mineralization, Zn-rich Sedex-type mineralization and peraluminous rare-element mineralized granite and pegmatite also was determined. The composition of the gahnite obtained from surficial samples was compared with that of in situ material. Gahnite from the peraluminous rareelement granite and pegmatite overlapped very well with surficial gahnite of Group 1. Gahnite from volcanogenic massive sulfide mineralization and Sedex-type mineralization overlapped well with surficial gahnite of Group 2. These results suggest that determination of gahnite composition in indicator mineral surveys may be useful in exploration programs when assessing the mineral potential of a region.

As pesquisas em transformação de fase ganharam novos horizontes a partir dos recentes estudos de Rios & Villa. Eles desenvolveram inéditos modelos analiticamente exatos a partir da geometria estocástica. Estes modelos são exatos para resoluções de problemas de nucleação e crescimento não homogêneos. O presente trabalho visa o estudo da nucleação em clusters, cuja cinética de transformação de fase sólido-sólido diverge consideravelmente daquela prevista pelo modelo JMAK. Nesse tipo de nucleação, os núcleos não estão homogeneamente dispersos na matriz, mas concentrados em regiões preferenciais chamadas clusters. Um dos principais parâmetros dessa nucleação é o número de clusters na matriz. Nesse trabalho, utilizando um modelo estocástico baseado na teoria do Cone Causal, foram simuladas reações de nucleação e crescimento que ocorrem especificamente em forma de clusters esféricos. Foi possível analisar o efeito que a variação do número de clusters provoca na cinética de transformação de fase e comparar os resultados obtidos com o modelo de Rios & Villa. Por meio dessa comparação, é possível observar que o modelo analítico corroborara com os resultados numéricos. Como conclusões principais tem-se que quanto menor o número de clusters, mais lenta é a reação de transformação de fase e que a microestrutura gerada possui características próprias e os resultados podem ser interpretados de maneira errônea se a presença dos clusters não for propriamente detectada.

In 1989, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral resource investigation of the 52,350-acre Jersey Jack study area, located in the Clearwater Mountains of north-central Idaho. Twenty-eight mines and prospects were examined, and 483 rock, placer, and petrographic samples were collected during the field study. Two properties contain gold resources; mining company data show the Robinson Dike mine contains an estimated 940,000 tons of "drill proven and probable reserves" averaging 0.041 oz/ton gold, and the Bureau of Mines investigation showed the Blacksand placer mine contains an estimated 64,000 cubic yards of identified placer resources averaging $8.13 in gold per cubic yard. Sample analyses from other properties indicate that gold resources are likely to exist; however the low tonnage, narrow, fissure-vein type deposits would require mining by relatively high-cost underground methods and would be subeconomic at a gold price of $400/oz.

A 16.5-kt/d underground molybdenum mine is being developed at Questa in northern New Mexico by Molycorp Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Union Oil Company of California. The new $200-million underground project will revitalize mining and milling activity at Questa, where small scale underground mining first began in 1920. Large scale open-pit mining was initiated in 1965 but now, because of the high stripping ratio, surface mining is being phased out. Construction of the underground mine began in 1979, and first produc¬tion is scheduled for early 1983. The company expects full capacity-9 Gg of molybdenum per year-to be reached in 1984.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines research was to investigate the theoretical and practical aspects of using ionizing radiation to promote chemical reactions that are of interest to metallurgists, and to carry out a radiation study of a suitable reaction. The effect of 44,000 roentgens per hour of 120,000-volt X-rays on the chlorination of highly pure mixtures of rutile, carbon, and various catalysts at temperatures up to 540° C. is described. At these low temperatures, recoveries were very low; however, in the eight different systems studied, an increase in yield due to X-rays was statistically significant in two instances and was of borderline significance in a third instance. In the other five systems, the differences in yield were not significant. Impurities and added catalysts caused relatively large variations in the yield of TiC14 from the reaction. Although the catalysts employed were reported in the literature as positive catalysts for the reaction, most of them were negative catalysts for the highly pure system studied. With only one exception, each increase in the purity of the charge resulted in a decreased yield of TiCl4. The experimental results indicate that many substances catalyze the reaction studied and suggest that the differences in reactivity of the charge stocks may be due to their various contents of positive and negative catalysts.

To accommodate larger double-stack rail cars through a tunnel, the existing active tracks were to be lowered. The tunnel is an elliptical, horseshoe-shape with concrete base support, removal of which would jeopardize the tunnel integrity, particularly since the soils beneath part of the tunnel floor included soft, saturated silt overlying rock. Grouted bar anchors combined with a SuperJet soilcrete strut replaced the existing support in situ prior to floor lowering. Close cooperation and detailed timely engineering support provided a quality project. Project design and construction, ground improvement methods, and the performance of the work are described.

In the processing of molten metals, it is extremely important to monitor continuously the concentration levels of various minor elements, In the production of common metals like copper, iron and aluminium electrochemical sensors involving solid, as well as liquid electrolytes are being increasingly used to measure the concentrations of minor elements The present paper deals with the electrochemical principles underlying these measurements and the possible errors involved. One of the major difficulties in the case of the solid electrolytes is to correct for the consequences oldie electronic contribution to the conduction of the electrolyte. The application of the electrochemical sensors for molten metals processing involves designing of these probes to withstand the industrial operating conditions. In this respect, significant achievements have been made with respect to the design of oxygen probes for liquid metals in general and liquid copper in particular. Some of the salient design features are discussed in the paper, The application of auxiliary electrodes for impurities in molten metals like phosphorus in copper and silicon in iron are taken up. The development of oxygen sensors for slags is given special attention. Recent developments&apos; in the field of sensor technology, as applied to metals processing are highlighted.

Researchers at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) work to reduce respirable dust exposures in mining operations. One focus of this research is silica dust control for surface and underground operations in the metal/nonmetal mining industry. PRL researchers analyze dust sampling results from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to identify high-risk occupations to guide research efforts. Research is then conducted in an effort to improve existing technologies and/or develop new controls for reducing worker exposure to airborne silica dust. During the last few years, PRL researchers have conducted research related to the following goals: improving protection provided by enclosed cabs on mobile surface mining equipment, reducing dust generation from surface drills, reducing dust levels in iron ore operations, and developing a new method to clean dust from workers? soiled clothes. A description of each of these controls and subsequent dust reductions quantified through site surveys will be provided.

"INTRODUCTIONMultiple-seam mining is an ever growing concern for engineers and mine management in every portion of the mining industry and is especially true for coal mining operations. The goal of this report is to identify the location and severity of multiple-seam interactions, provide AMSS calculations performed on the worst of these locations, and follow up with a visual examination of the underground physical effects on the roof and ribs in the locations identified for analysis. Multiple-seam mining is increasingly being studied because:1. Multiple-seam mining can create a multitude of problems such as roof falls, pillar crushing, pillar failing, rib spalling, floor heave, and inundation of water, gas, or oxygen-deficient air that can disrupt mining operations and threaten the safety of the miners.2. Multiple-seam mining is becoming more prevalent due to the depletion of virgin coal reserves.Currently, coal mining in the United States has progressed to the point that a growing number of mining companies are operating in coal seams located above, below, and/or adjacent to previously mined out coal seams. As a result, the state and federal governments are enacting higher safety standards on mining operations. For example, in years past, pillars may have been properly designed to handle single seam interactions for a particular mine or mines; however, today, where mining is now being considered above or below a previously mined area, these loading conditions may not be adequate to handle the removal of additional seams above or below the previously mined reserve. Studies from 1981 estimated that two-thirds of the mineable coal reserves in the United States would be impacted by multiple-seam implications. Today, over three decades later, it is obvious that most of the remaining mineable coal reserve will be influenced by previously extracted seams. Thus, thefocus on multiple-seam mining interactions on current and future mining operations. In 2012, underground mining in the United States produced 342,287 thousand short tons of coal. Northern Appalachia accounted for over 30% (103,301 thousand short tons) of this total (U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2013). Rosebud Mining Company and Western Allegheny Energy (RMC and WAE) have a combined total of 23 actively producing underground mining operations and at least four new mines under or ready for development. All of these mines are located in coal seams (Upper and Lower Freeport; Upper, Middle, and Lower Kittanning) of northern Appalachia (Pennsylvania and Ohio). Currently, more than half of the RMC and WAE mines are dealing with multiple-seam interactions. Seven mines are undermining previously mined out coal seams, and five mines are overmining previously mined out coal seams. Also, between these companies, five mines have inner-seam sloping possibilities (2 completed, 3 planned), most of which will result in mining over or under previously mined areas."

Os materiais compósitos tornaram-se ao longo dos últimos anos, essenciais ao surgimento de novas tecnologias. Para tanto, é imprescindível que alguns cuidados sejam considerados ao desenvolver estes materiais, como o uso do processo de fabricação adequado e a aderência fibra/matriz, sendo este último um fator preponderante na resistência mecânica final do produto. Também se torna cada vez mais necessário o desenvolvimento de materiais com capacidade de utilização ecologicamente correta. Diante disso, foi fabricado um compósito parcialmente ecológico, utilizando como reforço um tecido de sisal, e como matriz resina poliéster. Ainda, buscando a melhoria da aderência fibra/matriz foi efetuado um tratamento com Hidróxido de sódio (NaOH) a uma concentração de 3% no reforço de sisal. Para a caracterização mecânica do compósito, foram realizados ensaios de tração uniaxial nas fibras tratadas e não tratadas, bem como nas lâminas que utilizaram estas fibras como reforço, mediante a norma ASTM 3039. Quanto a esta propriedade mecânica, foi observado que o tratamento químico superficial diminui expressivamente a resistência à tração da fibra e, em contrapartida, aumentou a resistência do compósito polimérico quando comparado ao que utilizou fibra não tratada, confirmando assim o efeito positivo do tratamento na superfície do reforço de fibra natural.
