The behaviour of the lanthanide elements during the precipitation of sodium and potassium jarosites at 98oC from sulphate media was systematically investigated. The lower atomic weight lanthanide elements (La to Gd) are characterized by the limited solubility of their alkali-lanthanide sulphates, such as NaNd(SO4)2?H2O, which commonly contaminate the jarosite precipitates. Hence, single phase jarosite-type compounds were precipitated only from solutions containing <0.4 g/L of the La to Sm lanthanides. The sulphates of the heavier atomic weight lanthanide elements (Tb to Lu) have significantly higher solubilities such that solutions containing up to 10 g/L of the individual lanthanides could be investigated without the precipitation of alkali-lanthanide sulphate species. Even at the highest lanthanide concentrations, however, none of the jarosite precipitates incorporated more than 0.3 wt% of any of the lanthanide elements. Comparable levels of lanthanide incorporation were noted in both Na-jarosite and K-jarosite. Although the mass of the jarosite precipitate increased with increasing ferric sulphate concentration or with increasing pH, the extent of lanthanide incorporation was not significantly affected. Clearly, the trivalent lanthanide elements do not substitute extensively for trivalent iron in the jarosite structure. This behaviour likely reflects the significantly lower hydrolyzability and larger size of the trivalent lanthanide ions relative to ferric ions.

PT. Smelting Co. was established in February, 1996 to construct and operate the Gresik Smelter and Refinery. The construction work of first Copper Smelter and Refinery in Indonesia was completed in the end of August, 1998 and it was put into the integrated test operation in December, 1998. Gresik Smelter and Refinery is designed to produce 200,000 tpy of copper cathode from copper concentrate supplied from Grasberg Mine of PT. Freeport Indonesia Company in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. As by product 592,000 tpy of sulfuric acid, 382,000 tpy of slag, 31,000 tpy of gypsum and 480 tpy of slime will be produced in the full operation. In the early 1990?s, Inco successfully installed two new flash furnaces as part of their SO2abatement project to reduce SO2 emissions from the Copper Cliff Smelter by 60%. The flash furnace off-gas is cooled and cleaned through two new Monsanto Dynawave gas cleaning systems that replaced the traditional venturi scrubbing system. It was discovered that the flash furnace production capacity is often limited by the capacity of the gas cleaning system. The key task is to eliminate pressure drop from the system. The froth column is responsible for by far the largest pressure drop in the gas cleaning system. Initially, the column was fitted with 22 plates. In 1994, both #1 and #2 froth columns were modified by reducing the number of plates in each column from 22 to 18 and increasing the interplate spacing on lower plates. With increasing demand for more throughput in the flash furnaces, further modifications on the froth columns were made in 2005. This paper describes these modifications and results together with some fundamental analysis of the froth column characteristics.

The extraction of cerium(IV) by valence change with two-phase electrolysis was studied experimentally. The results show that the electro-oxidation extraction depends mainly on the distribution of the solute between the two phases, the reaction on the electrode surface and the diffusion of the reactant and product between the electrode and aqueous interphases. The effects of various parameters on cerium extraction were also studied. The selected parameters were background current, catholyte acidity, agitation speed, operation current and voltage and surfactant addition. The electro-oxidation extraction mechanism can be divided into eight steps. In addition, Wee the rate of extraction is quite fast, the percentage extraction Ce+4 can be taken as an index to show the conversion rate of Ce+3 J to Ce+4.

The Demag Electric Slag Cleaning Furnace installed at the Asarco Smelter in Hayden Arizona is one of the few rectangular electric furnaces now operating. The long transition times from charge to tap allow exceptionally clean skims (high recovery); however, the furnace design is complex. Additional Asarco requirements for rapid installation and commissioning further complicated the design. When operating and wear effects accumulated after two years of use, steps were taken to rebuild the furnace with enhanced durability based on the design parameters experience in actual use.

The investigation results are submitted on separation into layers in the systems Cu (Ni) - Fe - Ca - 0 - S - (Si), as well as on physico-chemical properties of oxide - ferrite, oxide-sulfide melts (density, surface tention, viscosity, electric conductivity), on kinetics and oxidation macromechanism of iron and sulfur in the oxide-silicate, oxide-ferrite and oxide-sulfide melts, kinetics of reduction of oxide-silicate and oxide-ferrite systems. Conditions are discussed for copper, nickel and zinc recovery from oxide-silicate and oxide-ferrite slag in liquid and solid states. Some promising technique is the technique of future, as is considered.

The grain refinement characteristics of four low-lead and lead-free copper base alloys for plumbing applications were investigated. These are leaded yellow brass (C85800). SeBiLOY III (C89550), silicon brasses (C87500 & C87800) and silicon bronzes (C87600 & C87610); Boron and zirconium were found to be the most effective .grain refiners for copper .alloys produced using the permanent mold cast processes. The study indicates that the type of grain refiner to be used is dependent on the alloy type, alloying constituents and their content. After grain refinement, hot tearing resistance of the alloys was improved but mechanical properties remained unaffected. Alloys refined with boron are prone to the formation of hard spots, which will have adverse effect on the surface quality of the castings during polishing and buffing.

In the world, as well as in Republic of Serbia, conventional ore reserves are almost exhausted, so the problem of their shortage is more and more expressed. On the other side, there are many locations with significant reserves of polymetallic ores which present huge potential but cannot be classically processed. Each of these classes of materials has particular mineralogical characteristics which affect their processing. Because of that it is necessary to develop particular technology for each unconventional ore in order to extract valuable elements. The aim of investigation was to define technology for complex processing of the Blagojev Kamen sulfide concentrate by pyrometallurgical procedure in order to valorize valuable non-ferrous and precious metals present, and profit with absolute respect of environmental protection laws. The complex composition of the Blagojev Kamen sulfide concentrate with high content of non-ferrous (15.59% Pb, 9.05% Zn, 2.37% Cu) and precious (697 g/t Au and 744 g/t Ag) metals was the main factor for technological procedure and collector selection. Laboratory investigations are done in four series according to technological scheme: oxidizing roasting, charge preparation (flux addition and agglomeration), smelting under reducing conditions, lead bullion refining, Dore metal refining to final products. It is concluded that precious metals are concentrated in lead bullion (up to 97.95% of gold and 93.37% of silver), which has similar composition to lead bullion produced in lead metallurgy. In this case, simplified technology is used for lead bullion processing because of low content of arsenic, bismuth, etc.

During the twentieth century, the copper smelting industry achieved dramatic expansion corresponding to the vast growth of global economy. This was largely due to innovations in pyro-metallurgical processes, such as autogenous smelting and continuous smelting and converting technologies. However, as copper production capacity increased, its impact on the environment also could not be ignored, and thus with increasing global environmental awareness, many smelting operations either had to renew or rebuild their facilities. In addition to these changes, in places like Japan and Europe, with scarce primary resources, the treatment and recovery of metals from a variety of items such as car shredder dust, used electrical appliances and electronic devices, on top of scraps traditionally treated, is having a profound effect on the reduction of waste and the preservation of primary resources. Thus compared to the days when copper smelting focused on the environmental control in order to break with "Smoke Stack Industry", copper smelting today is making an important contribution to the sustainable development of human society.

Home appliance recycling law was put into force in April 2001 in Japan. Specified kinds of home appliances, such as air conditioners, television sets, refrigerators and washing machines, should be recycled according to the law. Mitsubishi Materials Corporation (MMC) in cooperation with home appliance manufacturers is operating five home appliance recycling plants in Japan. MMC established complete treatment system of recyclable materials generating from home appliance recycling plants, which is formed by unique collaboration among home appliance recycling plants, copper smelter and refinery, and cement plants. Recyclable materials containing copper and precious metals are only handled and treated within the MMC group. By using this lock-in system, safe treatment and traceability of materials are guaranteed as 100% materials recycle.

Recycling technology of spent Mn-Zn system batteries has been worked out and tested in laboratory scale. The proposed technological scheme includes the following basic operations: breakage of batteries, hydro-vibrated treatment of broken up mass, electrolysis by using alkali electrolyte. This method enables extracting of 200-220 kg zinc in powder form, of 300-350 kg manganese concentrate and of 130 kg steel in the form of scrap per tone of broken up batteries.

The influence of coal desulphurization by fungus was experimentally studied. The present results suggest that fungus can effectively remove inorganic and organic sulfur in coal. The main factors that influence the desulphurization by fungus such as pH value, temperature, coal slurry concentration and coal granularity are studied by orthodox experiment and the optimal experimental conditions are as follows: pH value 6, temperature 45 C, coal slurry concentration 10% and coal granularity 100 m. Under the above conditions, fungus can remove up to 44.96 total sulfur and 54.87 inorganic sulfur within two days and their desulphurization rates will increase along with time. Compared to sulfolobas, desulphurization by fungus is steady and more effective and has the advantage of high speed.

Waste acids containing phosphoric, acetic, nitric and hydrofluoric acid were produced during the etching process of liquid crystal display and semiconductor manufacture. In recent years, the attention on the treatment of industrial waste acids has been increased considerably according to the reinforcement of the environmental regulations as well as the implementation of the economic considerations about the waste acids. Fundamental studies on the separation and regeneration of the mixed waste acids were conducted using Cyanex 923, Tri-octyle phosphate and 2-Ethylhexyl alcohol as an extractant by solvent extraction. It is considered that the extraction of liquid crystal display waste acids with Cyanex 923 and Tri-octyle phosphate, semiconductor waste acids with 2-Ethylhexylalcohol is applicable for the separation and recovery of acid. Finally, the acceptable recycling process from the multi-component waste etching acids was proposed.

Extracellular bacterial protein (EBP) from Paenibacillus polymyxa was isolated. Adsorption of bacterial cells of Paenibacillus polymyxa as well as EBP onto pyrite, galena and sphalerite was studied. Both bacterial cells and EBP was found to have different adsorption density for different minerals. Protein from mineral surfaces were extrated and examined through SDS PAGE electrophoresis. Specific group of protein was found to be adsorbing, specific to respective minerals. EBP was fractionated through FPLC. Adsorption studies were carried out with each fractions. Difference in adsorption density was observed for individual minerals. Flocculation and flotation experiment were carried out with these mineral specific EBP. Pyrite was selectively removed from ternary mixture of galena and spharite through flocculation anf flotation using pyrite specific EBP. Mineral specific EBP was found to selectively separated remove pyrite from the complex sulphide mixture.Zetapotential studies were carried out to examine the surface chemical changes of the minerals on interaction with EBP. Hydrophobicity of the minerals were carried out on interaction with bacterial cells as well as mineral specific EBP.

In the light of the discovery of the new super-conducting YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO), reactions in the Y2O3¬CuO-BaO system at 1300°C was investigated. The search was for any new phase that may be formed in the system at 1300°C (only 950°C reactions are known so far). 35 mixtures of different compositions were prepared and heated at 1300°C. No new phase was obtained. It was found that YBCO is decomposed at this temperature and Y2O3 and BaCO3 are the major components in the solid obtained after firing in air. However, on cooling the melt slowly and annealing at 950°C YBCO reforms. Such reactions on cooling might have implications on processing of the superconductor YBCO for practical applications as well as on its crystal growth by flux method.

The Guixi smelter is the first Outokumpu flash smelter in China .It was commissioned on December 31, 1985. Originally, the smelter was designed to produce 90,000 tonnes of copper annually. After the implementation of oxygen enrichment and other modifications, the smelter will reach its anticipated annual capacity of 200,000 tonnes of copper in December 1999. This paper describes the performance of the smelter, the first phase modification project and the second phase expansion project which have made Guixi one of the best copper smelters in the word through the use of existing and innovative technologies.

In the blast furnace, the reduction of iron oxide and gasification of coke occur simultaneously. It is well accepted that the gasification reaction controls the simultaneous reaction. Therefore, it is important to develop highly reactive carbonaceous materials. It is also known that the reaction is accelerated catalytically with the addition of some materials. In the present work, the catalytic effect of iron, nickel and CaO on the gasification of graphite and coke was examined. The catalytic effect of iron, nickel and CaO on the reaction rate of graphite was noticed The effect was larger at lower temperature. At 1373 K, the effect almost vanished. The effect was larger in the order of CaO, iron and nickel. The reaction rate of de-ashed coke increased by the addition of iron and nickel. The effect of iron was larger than that of nickel. The effect was larger at higher temperature, which was contrary to the case of graphite. The reactive surface area increased also by the addition. Therefore, the catalytic effect on reaction rate might be attributable to the increase in the reactive surface area.
