The paper discusses coal utilisation in Sweden. All hard coals have to be imported from other countries. Peat from domestic sources is used as a complement. Environmental legislation and taxation on fuel and emissions are severe. This situation affects the procurement, preparation, handling and use of coal. The Tessenderlo-Kerley Leach process has been shown to be effective in the removal of residual copper from molybdenite concentrates. Concentrates of varying mineralogy, including those containing relatively large amounts of chalcopyrite, have been successfully leached on laboratory and pilot plant scales. The lixiviant system is ammonia and ammonium bisulfite with air / oxygen addition. An abrasive is added which greatly enhances the kinetics, and it is subsequently screened out and reused. The dissolved copper is easily recovered using existing technology. Extraction profiles, reagent consumptions, and mineralogical data are presented.

Old tailings from Zn, Au, Cu, and Ni mining operations were characterized. Their mineralogical variation in depth is compared with matching pore water and solids chemistry. A geochemical model was used to predict minerals precipitating from pore water solutions. These are compared with actual secondary minerals occurring. The degree to which the precipitation of secondary minerals controls the sulfate and iron concentration of the pore water was also investigated. The results obtained are related to the selection of the most appropriate modes of tailings deposition.

Should an arbitrary reduction factor be applied to laboratory compressive strengths when designing pillars? The answer is, as is the main contention of Peng's article, probably not. Many factors affect the strength of the material remaining in the pillar. On the other hand, outside influences will influence the strength testing results from the lab. This is not the first article, nor the last, to discuss the discrepancy between the two strengths. As was discussed in the article, actual pillar strength is affected by several factors. The two mentioned were: • The scale effect of discontinuities. How large must the pillar be so that the increase in discontinuity count with size will not decrease the strength. • Non-uniform strengths and lithologic units within the pillar. The scale effect of discontinuities is important. What size block must be tested so that the rock mass strength is actually measured? For a highly fractured rock mass, or coal with a high cleat density, this sample may be quite small. Conversely, if an unaltered, moderately jointed, quartz monzonite was examined, the sample block would likely be very large. This is the subject of ongo¬ing research. More to the point, if the tested sample is sufficiently large to model the rock mass strength, then no reductions should be made in the lab strength based on this factor alone. Non-uniform strengths and variations in lithologic units will also affect the pillar strength. I am not an expert in coal mines, having gained my experience in hard rock metal mining. These problems, though, are commonplace. However, strength sampling for pillar strength determination involves sampling material from within the lithologic unit that will form the pillar, not from pieces of material found on the floor. In addition, this sampling should cover the entire range of strengths of the material in the pillar-hard units (such as the partings described by Peng), as well as soft units. Testing results should then be included in the pillar design. Contrary to statements in Peng's article, at least one rock mass rating system (Laubscher, 1990) allows for the compositing of strong and weak units into a design rock mass strength that can be used for pillar design.

According to the increasing importance of boom type roadheaders in tunnelling essential problems occuring in the application of these machines are dealt with. Based on a chart including the various stages for decicion finding the excavation method of underground cavities, both the technical limits and economic criteria are discussed in order to determine the range of applicability of roadheaders. Giving examples-the numerous developments in the fields of pick and cutting technology, performance data of boom type roadheaders in hard rock, safety technology and increase in the machines' degree of utilization, research and development of VA is illustrated. Two topic operation examples show partial aspects of the various tendencies of development.

INTRODUCTION A rail rapid transit system called the "Metro" system is presently under construction in the Nation's Capital area. The agency responsible for the design and construction of the Metro system is the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, an independent tristate organization set up under an Act of Congress and financed by federal, state, and local public funds supplemented by revenue bonds. When completed, the Metro system will comprise nearly 100 route miles. About fifteen percent of this mileage is now under construction, while designs for the-remainder are in progress. The system is scheduled for completion in about eight years at a cost of approximately 3 billion dollars. The Metro system will involve nearly all types of construction generally used for rapid rail transit projects. About half of the mileage will be underground, comprising approximately 16 miles of rock tunnels, 10 miles of earth tunnels, and nearly 21 miles of cut-and-cover construction in earth (see Figure 1.). The remaining 51 miles of the system is planned to be constructed on the surface as at-grade or elevated structures. The system includes 86 passenger stations, 53 of which will be underground structures. Twelve of the underground stations will be large size chambers in rock while other underground stations will be constructed in earth as cut-and-cover structures. Thus, about one-fifth of the system will be designed as underground structures, namely tunnels and stations, in rock. Addwest Minerals' turnaround of the Gold Road Mine in 1996 proves the old adage "mines are made, not found." The underground mine, located in Arizona's San Francisco mining district, was reopened in 1995. Start-up proved difficult because the initial mining method created significant ore grade dilution. With the operation's viability in question, only management's belief in the property and tenacity in the face of changing corporate ownership kept Gold Road from losing in the same year it opened. y changing mining methods in early 1996, Addwest re¬duced operating costs and created a profitable mine that continues to add to its reserve base.

To date, no ilmenite, rutile and zircon deposits of commercial importance have been reported in Turkey. However, information from recent reconnaissance activities indicates the possibility of an economically viable heavy-mineral deposit in the vicinity of Ormanli, which is located northwest of Istanbul along Turkey's Black Sea Coast. Consequently, beach coil sand-dune samples were collected from that area for additional analysis. Laboratory methodologies drat were designed to simulate standard industrial heavy-mineral plant practices were used to analyze and evaluate the samples. Based on these analyses and current market needs, none of the deposits in the Ormanli area qualify as a commercial heavy-mineral deposit.

BACKGROUND OF TARP The first settlement in Chicago in the 1830's was only 0.61 m (2 ft) above the level of Lake Michigan. The area was flat and swampy with local streams and rivers generally flowing to Lake Michigan. Repeated outbreaks of cholera and typhoid fever in the middle and late 1800's led to the reversal of the river system (away from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River). As a result of this reversal, the Chicagoland area has had to restrict water withdrawals from Lake Michigan and has had to develop and implement water management programs in compliance with orders set down by the Supreme Court of the United States. In order to comply with restricted lake diversion requirements and to compensate for a natural setting which was essentially hostile to human habitation, it has been necessary to embark on the construction of massive public works which include the world's largest water filtration plants, the world's largest wastewater treatment plants and finally the construction of TARP. The rivers and streams in the Chicago area are the headwaters of the Illinois waterway system. These headwaters are heavily polluted from combined sewer overflows of the area. Present pollution control laws require that combined sewer overflows be eliminated so that the rivers and streams can be used by the citizens of Cook, Du Page and Will Counties and other downstream communities. Fifty-three of the older most densely populated communities including the City of Chicago, covering an area of 971 sq km (375 sq miles), are served by combined sewers. Powder River Basin (PRB) mines were originally built to serve power plants designed specifically for their: coal. Sulfur was the major concern. Btu content and sodium limited the market for some plants. The PRB market has now extended to plants that are converting from other coals because of the Clean Air Act. These new customers are more sensitive to constituents that affect boiler and precipitator performance. At the same time, the prospect of deregulation is forcing power companies to improve cost controls. Kerr-McGee Coal's Jacobs Ranch Mine has responded to the changing marketplace with an expanded coal quality and customer service program.

Flotation of minerals is governed by many processes at the solid/liquid/gas interface, such as adsorption and precipitation of surfactants. In this paper, the basic principles governing these processes and hence flotation are discussed. Also, recent techniques such as fluorescence and ESR spectroscopy which have been used to study in situ surfactant adsorption and to obtain information on the structure of adsorbed layer are discussed.

Strontium occurs commonly in nature, averaging 0.034% of all igneous rock; however, only two minerals, celestite and strontianite, contain strontium in sufficient quantities to make its recovery practical, and these minerals are found in sedimentary rocks. Of the two, only celestite has been found to occur in deposits of sufficient size to make development of mining facilities currently attractive. Celestite, the most common strontium mineral, consists primarily of strontium sulfate (SrSO,). Strontianite, the second most common mineral, consists primarily of strontium carbonate (Sr CO3). Strontianite would be the more useful of the two common minerals because strontium is used most commonly in the carbonate form, but few deposits have been discovered that are suitable for development. The physical properties of strontium ores are listed in [Table 1].

U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers conducted field studies at an abandoned copper-gold mine tailings impoundment. Pore water quality was analyzed in the vadose and saturated zones. Three statistical procedures were employed to summarize the variability within and between the two zones. The results indicated that linear combinations of those variables reflecting sulfide oxidation and aluminum-silicate weathering best summarized the variability in each zone, and that the zones were most different on the basis of sulfide oxidation variables. The geochemical computer code WATEQ4F was used to assess the solubility status (saturation index) of minerals. Saturation indices of sulfide oxidation and aluminum-silicate weathering minerals were different in the two zones. It was demonstrated that the statistical analyses produced similar and complementary results to the geochemical code.

The mineralogical and chemical compositions of various waste materials undergo different reactions when treated thermally The heavy metal contents can be bound to stable phases. These minerals are called reservoir minerals. The main property of these minerals is the stability in their geochemical surrounding containing the heavy metal cations and anions. Examples for these minerals are apatites, spinels, garnets, perovskites and also water containing minerals like ettringites, metal-metal-hydroxi salts, jarosites and zeolites. When the chemical compositions of different wastes are mixed according to the compositions of the new formed minerals, a probable reuse of these wastes can be obtained. The use of waste incineration ashes for the production of cementitious binders and the use of flue gas desulfurization products for cement additives are shown. Also the transformation of highly contaminated materials into stable reservoir mineral assemblages are shown including the study of stabilization and immobilization techniques.

Longwall systems are used to mine approximately 50 pct of the world's total coal production. Single entries are the predominate method of longwall development in Europe and Asia where mining conditions are much more severe than those encountered in the United States. During the 1970's and early 19801s, the Bureau of Mines and the coal mining industry invested nearly $20 million in single entry and related research. This report reviews the accomplishments of single-entry research in the United States. Two U.S. single-entry field projects are described; the Sunnyside Single-Entry Project conducted in central Utah, and the Tunnel Boring project conducted in northern West Virginia. Two other important studies are discussed, the Single-Entry Study by NAMCO and the Single-Entry Design Study by Ketron. Inc. This review compares the resulting technology with European counterparts to further assess the utility and efficiency of the U.S. systems, and final1 y, it discusses future research and development options which would lead to safe and productive single-entry longwall development in this country.

Waterjets and diamond wire saws have raised the productivity and lowered the cost in dimensional granite quarries. While the cost of diamond wire sawing is substantially lower than waterjet, the judicial use of the waterjet can simplify and improve the overall operating efficiency and predictability. Granite is the hardest commercial stone and only the gem-stones garnet and diamonds are harder. The introduction of industrial diamonds has made it possible to quarry and process granite at costs equal to or less than other natural stones – making granite, with its superior properties, the best value available.

Despite lower prices and the uncertain future of nuclear power, uranium continued to be the big attraction in 1979 exploration activity. Uranium again dominated exploration programs across the US-not only in primary producing states such as New Mexico and Wyoming, but in potential producing areas from the northern counties of Minnesota to the Grandfather Mountain region of North Carolina. The moratorium on uranium leasing was lifted in Colorado and Montana, and exploration activity intensified accordingly. In Wyoming, what may be the biggest uranium deposit in the state was discovered by Anaconda Copper Co. near Jeffrey City, but in general, there were few major discoveries and activity was concentrated on existing exploration programs. The Department of Energy expects 1979 uranium exploration expenditures to total $339 million, compared to the $314 million spent by industry in 1978. Surface exploration and development drilling in 1979 is estimated at 16.1 Mm, up slightly from 1978 figures. Gold demanded its share of the spotlight in 1979. Soaring prices lured prospectors, investors, operators, and speculators to Alaska, California, Colorado, and Washington in a small-scale gold fever. Exploration for molybdenum remained strong in Alaska, Colorado, and Washington, where mineralization at the Mt. Tolman prospect is now estimated at 816 Mt averaging 0.09% copper and 0.10% molybdenum disulfide. Again this year, one of the major deterrents to exploration was the drive to set aside huge areas of land as wilderness preserves. In Alaska, where Interior Secretary Cecil Andrus has withdrawn millions of acres under the Antiquities Act, BP Alaska decided to close its Anchorage office, reportedly due to the lack of public lands available for mineral exploration. In both geophysical and geochemical activity, the year is best characterized as one of consolidation and development of previous advances in the state of the art, without any fundamental breakthroughs. Many companies were active in the development of instrumentation. Continuing interest in spectral IP resulted in the introduction of two instruments, one by Phoenix Geophysics, the other to be announced shortly by Geotronics Corp. Radiometric and borehole logging equipment received considerable emphasis, reflecting the continued interest in uranium exploration.
